About the cover Faces can do many things. Faces can inspire. From the fresh one to a seasoned one, faces can tell a story. The face can tell a story of where someone has been, as well as where someone is going. The Faces of Vermilion Parish Football can do all of those things and more. Go to any game this fall and you will see just that, even if you can't see the faces under the helmet. Those faces will be ones of pure joy and and sometimes agony. But the faces will tell a story. The story most of the faces will want to tell in 2011 is successful ones. The faces making up the Abbeville Wildcats, Delcambre Panthers, Kaplan

Pirates, North Vermilion Patriots and Vermilion Catholic Eagles will want to see themselves reach the postseason in back-to-back seasons. The faces of the Erath Bobcats and Gueydan Bears will try to be push forward and get back to the postseason. There will be some new faces, including dozens of freshman. Most of the coaches are familiar faces, but VC has a new face on the sideline, ﬁrst-year head coach Trev Faulk. There will be plenty of faces watching the Faces of Football this fall. Every face will tell a story. And every one of those stories will be worth the read.

Rebuilding underway for Abbeville Wildcats After going 4-6 in regular season play with one of the toughest schedules of any team in class 3A, the Abbeville Wildcats ended the 20102011 season with a 49-14 loss to Patterson in round one of the playoffs. Abbeville Head Coach Larry Breaux said last year’s schedule may have been a little too tough. “To be honest, I may have over done it,” he said. “Last year we were number two in the state as far as strength (of schedule) goes. “What I tried to do with our non-district opponents is set it up where it isn’t quite as tough.” Now, with a new district (9-3A) to contend with, one that includes the team that knocked them out of postseason play a year ago, the Wildcats face a whole new set of challenges. “You are kind of nervous at this point,” said Breaux, “about whether you’re ready or not... but I feel that way every year at this time.” Gone are last year’s starting quarterback in the wily R.J. Frederick, tight end/defensive Alonzo Williams, receivers Delontra Fields and Brett Meaux and right tackle JJ Davenport. The rebuilding begins with a team that ﬁelds over 30 freshman. “It’s not that I’m really scared any more than I normally would be because we’re young,” said Breaux. “It’s just that time of year. Everybody’s kind of nervous.” Though they are ﬁelding a team of 53 players, the Wildcats have only three return-

ing starters, all offensive linemen: 6-foot, 225 pound senior right guard Cole LaPoint; 6-foot, 260 pound right tackle Dustin Broussard and 5-foot10-inch, 240 pound center Matthew Lege. Those experienced linemen will be protecting the blind side of new junior lefthanded starting quarterback Ross Duhon (6 feet 1 inch, 175 pounds). On the left side of the line, Abbeville will have 5-foot-11inch, 240-pound guard Jorge Felipe and 5-foot-10 -inch junior tackle Bret Stelly. Faulk brings spread offense to VC Eagles The Vermilion Catholic Eagles started out 0-6 last season, but ended the regular season by winning fourstraight games to make the playoffs for the second year in a row. This year, a new head coach is at the controls and VC returns 13 starters, the majority of which are seniors. VC Head Coach Trev Faulk, who is a former linebacker for the LSU Tigers and a former NFL player, is taking the team in a new direction offensively. Returning senior quarterback Aaron David will be tasked with keeping things under control and hitting his receivers in what Faulk says will be a fast-paced attack. “Our quarterbacks coach has done a really good job of working with Aaron throughout the spring, all summer and now into fall,” said Faulk. “We’re feeling pretty conﬁdent in Aaron’s ability to throw the football. I think everyone knows he can throw it.” Faulk suggested David’s task is much like that of a talented recruit. “We just have to get him focused on making the proper reads and executing in this offense,” said Faulk. “I think the same could be said for any young quarterback coming into a new system. “He’s done well and we’ve seen a lot of improvements from Aaron from spring practice up until where we are now.” Aaron David may be learning a new system, but his comfort level should be

high with his receivers and backs, as most of them retain their starting roles from last season. Senior Ryan David remains at his wide receiver position. He is joined there by junior Dustin Desormeaux, who is moving from the running back position he held last year. The other two receivers are slated to be Beaux Primeaux and Emile Chiasson. Faulk said the chemistry between those receivers and their quarterback is apparent. “There deﬁnitely is (chemistry), being that we have quite a few upper classmen,” said Faulk. “But, there’s still the adjustment period, because they’re also running a new system and learning new routes that maybe senior VC

Bobcats look to continue making improvements ERATH - The Erath Bobcats had a respectable 4-6 overall record in 2010, but a disappointing 1-5 district record conspired to keep them out of the playoffs. This year they want to change that. The Bobcats started out 3-0 last year, but dropped the next five-straight games. “(We) made significant offensive improvements last football season,” said thirdyear Erath Head Coach Destin Dietrich, “despite losing standout (senior) running back Aaron Darby to a season-ending foot injury in week four.” That offense will boast five retuning starters, including 5-foot-8-inch, 240-pound se-

nior center Jerret Dooley and 5-foot-10-inch, 194-pound senior right tackle Beau Dugas on the line. In the backﬁeld, the Bobcats will have 5-foot-8-inch, 190-pound junior Coy Clostio; 5-foot-9-inch, 155-pound junior Wayne Scalisi and 5-foot-9-inch, 165-pound senior speedster Cole Bourque. Erath lost one of its team leaders when quarterback Mikey Seymour, who threw for 906 yards in the runheavy triple option offensive formation that Dietrich runs, graduated last year. There is somewhat of a position battle to ﬁll his shoes between junior Jimmy Jordan (5 feet 7 inches, 150 pounds) and sophomore Ty Barres (6 feet, ERATH

Moving up a class, pressure on for Delcambre Panthers DELCAMBRE - The Delcambre Panthers are entering a new class, 2A, and with it a new district for 2011-12. Last year, the Panthers made it to the playoffs in their final season in District 7-1A, though they lost a heartbreaker to St. Edmunds in the first round of the playoffs. “We had a good game, we just didn’t do the things we should have done to continue playing,” said Delcambre Head Coach Darcy Delcambre, who is entering his 11th year in that role. “That’s one of those humps that we have to get over: how are we going to overcome some adversity?” Coach Delcambre said he felt his players that are returning from last year will have gained from last year’s experience. “Hopefully they will have picked up some things from last year,” he said. “Somebody will score a touchdown. You will fumble. We don’t want to let that happen, but if it does happen, how are we going to bounce back from that? We have to bounce back. “We’re not going to push the panic button when somebody scores two quick ones on us; we’re going to come back and fight.” The Panthers ended the season with a 5-6 record, having tied for first place in District 7-1A. This season, the Panthers will be in District 6-2A with Jeanerette, Loreauville, West St. Mary and Catholic High of New Iberia. Those last two teams were in class 3A last season. “It’s going to be a challenge, without a doubt,” said Delcambre. “Any time you move up a level like that,

there’s a change. “In the mid-80s, we were in 2A, so, it’s like I told the kids, ‘New district, new teams, new challenge,’ and now we’ve just got to work on that.” The only team in the new district that Delcambre has not played in recent years is West St. Mary, so Coach Delcambre said he feels that his team will be ready for those new challenges. Coach Delcambre said his biggest concern was the “mental aspect” of his players going into the larger class, but that he felt the Panthers could handle it. The Panthers are returning ﬁve starters on offense and ﬁve on defense, though two of those players, senior Jesse Jules (5 feet 9 inches, 150 pounds) and junior Jace Dore (5 feet 10 inches, 170

North Vermilion looks to improve LEROY - In his ﬁrst year as skipper of the North Vermilion football team, Head Coach Tommy Byler took the Patriots to the playoffs. NV went into the postseason as the 27 seed and lost in the ﬁrst round to number 6 Holy Cross out of New Orleans. That was the Pats’ secondconsecutive trip to the postseason. Entering his second season with the Patriots, Byler will look to improve on that record. “We’re going to be really young this year,” said Byler. “(We have) lots of question marks to answer (as only) eight starters return.” On offense, the Patriots will be led by 5-foot-10-inch,

160 pound second-year starter Joe Duhon at quarterback. Duhon made 53 completions on 105 attempts for 839 yards last year. He had 10 touchdown tosses versus eight interceptions. “He’s really stepped up since he became the starting quarterback last year. We know he can do the job,” Byler said of Duhon,. “We don’t have any concerns about that. The problem is that we don’t have anyone to back him up.” By that, Byler said he meant that the backup quarterbacks he had in mind earlier in the year are no longer with the team. “His backup is a wide receiver,” Byler said. Kaplan hopes to continue recent success The Kaplan Pirates were the only Vermilion Parish high school football team to get past the first round of the playoffs last season after going 8-2 in the regular season and 4-1 in district play. Kaplan finished second in District 5-3A to Notre Dame, which is no longer in the same district as the Pirates after this year’s redistricting. The 10th-seeded Pirates beat Eunice number 23 Eunice 21-14 for their first playoff victory in 14 years to advance to the second round where they lost 48-38 to eventual state runner up, number 7 Patterson.

“(That result) has the Pirates thinking they can do better,” said Kaplan Head Coach Stephen Lotief who is entering his second year at Kaplan High. “The kids are starting to realize that time is running out and every play is important.” Offensively, the Pirates are returning only four starters from last year’s playoff squad. Senior quarterback Kameron Abshire (6 feet, 200 pounds) is entering his second season at the helm of the offense. Abshire’s targets will be ﬁrst-year starters junior tight end Mah LaVergne (6 feet 1 inch, 200 pounds) and senior KAPLAN

Looks From Page 8 starter Landon Dupuis. Dupuis wracked up 434 yards on 20 receptions for four touchdowns a year ago. Byler said that being so thin at the quarterback position will dictate a lot of the play calling he employs this season. “We’re just going to have be careful with what we do with him,” he said. “We’re not going to want to do things that put him at risk of getting hurt out there.” That being the case, the Pats will likely lean heavily on their tailback, returning senior Jeremy James (6 feet, 175 pounds), as NV lost last year’s leading rusher when Zach Bourque graduated. Bourque had 185 carries for 933 yards and a 5.04 average in 2010, but as a junior James had 252 yards on 69 carries for a respectable 3.65 average. “He’s a heck of an athlete,” said Byler of James, “and he can do some great things on the ﬁeld when he wants to. The challenge is going to be to get him to go 100 percent all the time. “Because that’s what we’re going to need him to do.” The Pats also retain senior Chris Fauntleroy (5 foot 10 inches, 180 pounds) at right guard, though he is the only other returning offensive starter from last year’s playoff squad. New offensive starters include junior Riley Maturin at wide receiver and junior Chad Beraud at split end. The entire left side of the line is also new. It consists of senior Dillon Romero at tackle, junior Brylan Suire

at guard and junior Jordan Bruno at center. Joining James in the backﬁeld will be senior Tim Baudoin at fullback. In 2010, Baudoin gained 26 yards on eight touches. He also had seven receptions for 108 yards and four touchdowns, so he seems primed for a solid year in the backﬁeld. Defensively, NV returns corner backs Dupuy and Fauntleroy. “We’ve got several offensive starters penciled in as defensive starters,” said Byler, “but we’re going to have to try different things with our younger players to help give those guys a break. “We’re going to need some kids to step up and show that they can play.” Byler pointed to his running back, James, as a prime example of why he wanted to utilize as few players on both sides of the ball as possible. “I can’t see using him on defense,” Byler said. “By

the time the fourth quarter comes around, he won’t have anything left. It won’t matter if he wants to (go full out) or not.” Returning starters Baudoin and Marturin at the linebacker position in the Pats’ 4-2-5 basic set should help keep the confusion down for the young defense. The lone returning defensive lineman for NV, though, is Dane Briggs. All three safeties - Mitch Bares, Chad Beraud and Kenneth Johnson are new. The three new linemen are Castle Drummer, Brylan Suire and Daelin Brasseaux. “None of those guys are very big,” said Byler, “but they’re very athletic...The hope is that they’ll be able to use their speed to counter the size difference we’re likely to have with a team like (new district foe) Patterson. If we can do that, we could have a pretty good season.”

Rumors of Gueydan Bears’ demise greatly exaggerated Last year, the Gueydan Bears went 1-9, a complete reversal of fortunes as compared to the year before, when they were 9-1 in the regular season. Gueydan’s only losses that year came to class 3A South Beauregard in mid-season and to Delhi Charter in the second round of the playoffs. This season, Gueydan is ﬁelding a team of 28 total players, a good portion of which are eighth and ninth graders. So attrition could be a factor in the Bears’ success

in the new District 8-1A. “This is by far the least experienced team that I’ve had as a head coach and that we’ve had in recent years,” said Gueydan Head Coach Jay Landry. He said the last couple of years have just happened to coincide with a time when the rural community of Gueydans does not have many boys in 11th and 12th grade. “We have a low number of boys in the upper grades right now,” Landry said. “That’s what’s contributed to (the lack of experience). It’s not a lack of desire to participate; it’s just simply a lack of

numbers.” The Bears have a lot of unanswered questions as to who will play where this year. Landry said, “as time goes by,” that would be ﬁgured out. The Bears also will not have the beneﬁt of a scrimmage or a jamboree game to sort those things out, as Gueydan has withdrawn from those games. Landry said he did so because he could ill afford to have one of his more skilled players go down to injury. The only positions that Bears

‘Mellow’ James asked to bring it for Patriots LEROY - North Vermilion tail back Jeremy James has a lot going on these days, so much so that he says when he has time off from sports, all he wants to do is relax. When asked for a good time to reach her son for an interview, James’ mother, Vallerie, quipped, “after a nap.” And when asked when that might be, she replied, “all the time.” But don’t take that to mean that the laid back James is lazy. James plays three sports for the Patriots. He is a point guard on the NV basketball team, and he is also a big part of the Patriots’ track team. In track, James runs on the relay squads,

sprints, and throws the shot. He said he prefers to play football, though. “Football is my passion,” he said. James said all he did over the summer was work out and run. “I’ve be training,” he said, “getting ready for the season. “I work out twice a day, lifting weights, and I run a lot of sprints.” James said he runs sprints to help develop the quick-burst speed that he feels should help him break away from secondary defenders. If he has improved that speed over last season, then 2011 should be a banner year for James. Last season, James served as a multiple-look threat for the Pats, handling the ball on the ground JAMES

Delcambre said that having a back break the 1,000 yard plateau is a priority. “The last few years,” said Delcambre, “we’ve had a running back that has rushed for over 1,000 yards. “Our linemen have taken it upon themselves to have a 1,000 yard rusher.” Those linemen, all seniors, include last year’s starting tackles senior Dillan Falgout (5 feet 11 inches, 230 pounds) and 6-foot-4-inch, 260 pound senior Clayce Heyer. In the middle, Delcambre is fielding three new starters in senior guards Mark Rodrigue (5 feet 11 inches, 185 pounds) and Tyler Comeaux (6 feet 1 inch, 220 pounds), as well as senior center Nick Melancon (6 feet, 270 pounds). The Panthers are also fielding a new quarterback for 2011 in junior Robert Primeaux. At 5 foot 7 inches tall and 150 pounds, some might consider Primeaux to be undersized at the quarterback position, but Delcambre says Primeaux can fill the role. “If he’s a competitor, that’s what I want,” said Delcambre. “I want a guy that can lead the team. “You give me a quarterback that’s got a lot of heart and that’s a competitor, and we’ll take that. That’s what we hope Robert’s going to be.” Still, Delcambre said he is more of a running coach than a passing one, saying that the time of possession battle is key. DHS

Hoffpauir brings emotion to gridiron

Sophomore Tyson Broussard (5 feet 8 inches, 175 pounds) will be the starting wing back. Junior right guard Andrew Champagne (5 feet 10 inches, 210 pounds) is the only returning offensive lineman. Junior left tackle Lorenz Zaunbrecher (5 feet 9 inches, 190 pounds), senior left guard Blaine Guidry (5 feet 9 inches, 180 pounds) and senior center Brody Primeaux (5 feet 9 inches, 190 pounds) will round out the starting offensive line. “Primeaux got a lot of playing time at center last year,” said Lotief. Tyson Trahan (5 feet 10 inches, 200 pounds) will split time with senior Sam Hoffpauir (6 feet, 240 pounds), who missed most of last season with a broken collar bone, at starting right tackle. “Tyson and Sam started last year at tight end and fullback respectively,” said Lotief, “and moved to offensive tackle for the team without a blink of an eye.” Abshire will also get the kicking duties for the Pirates this season. In that role last year, he was 20-for-23 in PATs and 4-for-5 on ﬁeld goal attempts. On defense, Kaplan has six starters returning. Last year’s interception leader Trey Choate (six interceptions, one for a touch-

down) returns to start at corner back for his senior season. The Pirates also return both linebackers in their 4-25 set in senior Jacques Laviolette (6 feet, 185 pounds) and Trahan. On the defensive line, seniors Joseph Fuselier (6 feet, 230 pounds), Jonathon Breaux (5 feet 10 inches, 215 pounds) and Hoffpauir all return from last year. In the secondary, Kaplan will be ﬁelding new starters in senior corner back Brice Trahan (5 feet 8 inches, 170 pounds), sophomore free safety A.J. Perro (5 feet 10 inches, 185 pounds) and senior strong safeties John Trahan (5 feet 11 inches, 175 pounds) and Hunter Miller (5 feet 8 inches, 170 pounds). On the line, sophomore Slade Bouillion (6 feet, 210 pounds) will be the only new starter. Lotief said there was every chance the Pirates would contend again in 2011, but there were matters of concern. “We have a chance to be pretty good,” he said. “At the same time, we have a chance to be pretty bad.” He said the little things would be big. “We have some athletic ability,” Lotief continued. “We just have to pay more attention to detail.” Lotief suggested that the main question would be whether his players could remain healthy for all 10 regular-season games. “We have some competition at various positions,” he said. “At other positions, one injury could devastate the team. “So, we are going to say a lot of prayers.”

Last season was a long one for Kaplan’s Sam Hoffpauir. After starting the season in his usual full back position on offense and linebacker on defense, Hoffpauir suffered a season-ending collar bone break in the second play of week two. “I didn’t cry at all when I broke (it),” Hoffpauir said. “But when the trainer told me I had to go to the hospital, I just broke down, because all I could think about was, ‘I’m supposed to be playing this year.’ Hoffpauir

The 6-foot-2-inch Willis is moving over to left tackle this season. He will be joined on the line by new starting junior left guard Hunter Darby (6-foot-1-inch, 225 pounds) and new starting sophomore left guard Cameron Hebert (6-foot-3-inches, 285 pounds). Junior Austin Domingues (5-foot-8-inch, 155 pounds) and senior Taylor Carlin (5-foot-7-inches, 140 pounds) are expected to do the receiving. Dietrich said he expected to see a better defense this year than the one the Bobcats put together a year ago. “(We) did not show the same improvements from year one of the new coaching staff’s era,” he said. “(But) we know year three will ﬁnd the Bobcats back on top defensively.” Senior Antonio Willis (6-foot-2-inches, 225 pounds)

is returning at defensive tackle and is the only returning starter on the defensive line. Willis will be joined on the line by junior defensive end Austin Touchet (5-foot-10inches, 185 pounds), senior defensive end Jarrod Lange (6-foot, 220 pound) and junior defensive tackle Hunter Darby (6-foot-1-inch, 225 pound), all ﬁrst-year starters. “(Touchet and Darby) will be solid up the front,” said Dietrich. At linebacker, the Bobcats are returning 5-foot-8-inch, 190 pound junior Coy Clostio and 5-foot-7-inch, 165-pound senior David Vincent. “(Darby) got signiﬁcant reps last season,” said Dietrich. “(He) has put on some necessary muscle mass and is expected to be quite a contrib-

utor on both sides of the ball.” The Bobcats are fielding first-year starter junior Kevin Guilbeaux (5-foot-7-inch, 170 pounds) at the third linebacker spot in their 4-3 basic defensive set. At defensive back, Erath will be quick with the return of Scalisi and Bourque, the latter of which won the class 3A state championship in the 400 meter dash. Both backs boast a subfive second 40-yard dash time. Scalisi will also take over the kicking duties from Seymour, who averaged 33 yards per punt last year. Five-foot-seven-inch, 140-pound senior Taylor Carlin and 5-foot-8-inch junior Austin Domingues will be starting at defensive back for the first time.

He will share the running duties with senior Mark LaPorte. LaPorte is moving to the backfield from the starting wide receiver position he was utilized in last season. “Jacoby rushed for 1200 - 1300 yards last year as a ninth grader,” said Faulk. “He’s an explosive player. We’re going to find a few different ways to get the ball into his hands and try to give him a little bit of space to run.

“I think when you look at his ability as a runner to go along with the ability that we have on the outside, we have an opportunity to be pretty decent on offense.” On the offensive line, VC is expected to have returning starters senior Eric Patout sharing time with Kyle Zenon at left tackle and JJ Cote at right tackle, senior Andrew Bernard at left guard, senior Ryan Domingue at center and senior Caleb Zaunbrecher at right guard. James From Page 12 and through the air. He had 69 carries as a backup for then-senior Zach Bourque and also had 11 receptions, adding up 372 allpurpose yards. This season James will be tasked with more regular running and receiving duties, so those numbers will surely go up. James is also listed as a linebacker on the NV roster, but he did not hesitate when asked which he preferred. “I like offense,” he said. “I mean, defense is cool because you get to hit people, but I like to run with it because you get to create as you go.” James should get plenty of chances to do that this year, as he is expected to be the featured back in the Patriots’ offense. “Jeremy’s a pure athlete,” said NV Head Football Coach Tommy Byler. “He plays multiple sports and he has the ability to be good at all of them.” James, who is going into his senior year at NV, said his one goal this season is to make a return trip to the playoffs. “I’ve been there two times,” he said. “I’d like to go again and maybe go a little further (than the ﬁrst round).” James said after high school, he’d like to go to college. He said he’d go anywhere if he could get a scholarship, but his dream is to go to the University of Miami. When asked why Miami, he was typically low-key. “I’ve just always liked them,” he said, “plus I really like the (Miami) Heat.” And when asked if that was because of the ﬂashy Lebron James, he replied, “No, I like Dwayne Wade.”

Central Catholic still loaded for 2011 season The Central Catholic Panthers, coming off an 11-2 record, return plenty. The Panthers fell to Oberlin in the quarterﬁnals behind the arms and legs of junior quarterback Josh Singleton. Singleton ran for 600 yards and threw for 934 yards. Well, he’s back and ready to do it again, said CC head coach David Fuhrer. “Josh is a more agile kind of quarterback than what we have had in the past,” said Fuhrer. “Central Catholic has had dropback quarterbacks, but he is more of an option quarterback.” Behind the legs and arms of Singleton, Fuhrer is expecting positive things from his football team. The Panthers return all but one player on offense and seven on defense. “We have a lot of expectations this year,” Fuhrer added. “We return many starters and have

District 8-1 A guys behind them who can back them up.” When Singleton is not running, look for him to throw to tight end, 6-2, 185-pound Conner LeBlanc or his 6-3, 190-pound split end Dontrell Brown. On defense, Lloyd Grogan, the district MVP last year, is back at linebacker. Grogan had 111 combined tackles in 2010. Ascension Episcopal Blue Gators is hoping to build in a successful 2010. The Gators ﬁnished 6-5 in 2010 and lost to Westminster Christian in the ﬁrst round. The Gators are only in their third year of existence and are improving each year. Under the guidance of head coach Randy Johnson, the Gators won two games in 2009 with only 16 players. Last year with 23 players,

they went 6-5. This year with 31 players, Johnson is hoping to improve on a year ago. “Our biggest weakness is going to be our size and inexperience because this is only their third year of football,” said Johnson. “This is made up for, however, with their enthusiasm and the fact that they have had some success.” A huge reason for their success is because of Myles Lee. Lee, a 6-0, 185 pound running back, had 135 carries for 1,094 yards last season. He averaged 8 yards a carry and scored 18 touchdowns. When he was not crossing the end zone, Lee was kicking it through the uprights. He also made 31 out of 33 pointafter-attempts and nailed two ﬁeld goals. On defense, the Gators return their leading tackler, Parker Parra, who is a 5-11, 180-pound defensive tackle.

“It should be an interesting year for our third year of football,” Johnson said. The Hanson Tigers have most of their returns back from a year ago. Hanson, coming off a 3-7 year, has nine back on offense and 10 on defense. “The numbers are there, but we have to stay healthy,” said Hanson head coach Richard Standusky. Getting the starting nod at quarterback is Drake Rodriguez, who started the final five games for Hanson. He had just over 500 yards rushing at QB. On defense, 10 out of 11 starters began or finished the year as a starter for Hanson. Leading the defense last season in tackles is linebacker Zachary Uzéy, who returns for his senior year. “With 13 seniors, we are looking to improve on last year’s record,” he added.

DHS From Page 14 “That’s what we tell our kids,” said Delcambre, “as long as we have the ball, the other team can’t score.” Defensively, Delcambre said he is hoping to see improvement this year. “(We) concentrated and worked on that this spring and summer,” he said. “Our defense has to get better. (It) has to be able to control the game just as much as the offense. “We felt like in the past, our offense controlled more of the game tempo.” Delcambre said that defensive effort will start with his two returning, All-District players in Rodrigue, who led the team with 53 tackles

last year and senior linebacker Ashton Eastin. “We feel confident that, around those two guys and (returning senior tackle) Tyler Comeaux (6 feet 1 inch, 220 pounds)...we can build a solid defense,” said Delcambre, elaborating that he hoped to force other teams into passing situations. The remaining pieces of that puzzle are first-year starting linemen senior Clarence Farrier at defensive end and junior Toby Duhon at tackle. Also getting their first stars are seniors Hilto Tezeno, Christian Umphries and Jesse Mayfield safety.. “We feel our secondary is good and solid and that if we can get teams to do something that they’re not comfortable doing, then we’ve accomplished our task,” Delcambre said.

Rodrigue leading by example Mark Rodrigue wears many hats for the Delcambre football team, and going into his ﬁnal season as a Panther, he will have to put forth a lot of effort to top his 2010-2011All-District season. Rodrigue’s team-leading tackle total of 53 bettered the tally of the previous team leader (Jorey Renard - 36) by 17. He also bettered Renard’s assist total (23) by a long shot (68). Rodrigue, 18, was a linebacker last season, but he should still do a lot of damage from his new defense end position. RODRIGUE

Gerald Minnick did a great job for us, but he was more of a power back.” Defensively, Breaux said he is reluctant to have his few upper classmen wear out playing offense and defense. To that effect, Breaux said the entirety of the defensive starting positions are up for grabs. “We’re trying to set it up where we have as few guys going both ways as we can,” said Breaux. “But, in order to do that it means we’re going to have to have quite a few freshmen step up and start (games).” He described a sort of musical chairs situation at virtually every position on defense. “We’re just kind of trying different people in different places right now and seeing who’s going to be the best at each spot,” said Breaux. “Even though we don’t want to, we may have to have some of the guys who are starting on offense get into a rotation on defense.” Breaux said the linemen will likely be the ones to bear the load of playing both sides. “I think we’ve found a couple of the young guys that are ready to get into (a) rotation,” he said. “I think we’ll be okay.”

AHS’s Broussard takes on leadership role Abbeville senior right tackle Dustin Broussard has taken it upon himself to provide leadership to what has turned out to be a youthful squad of Wildcats football players this season. “I think every team needs some kind of leadership,” said Broussard. “They need somebody to push them harder, get the team through when we’re losing. We just need that emotional speaker to get everybody pumped up before the game and during the game, to keep their heads high and never get down on themselves.” Broussard said he feels that the younger players need the support of the older ones.

“Especially the freshmen,” he said. “I’ve been giving a lot of freshmen some compliments, saying if they came to practice and they worked hard, they would be something by the time their senior year comes.” Broussard said he tries to help all the younger players, but he especially focuses on the younger linemen. “I try to help them out as much as I can,” he said. “I don’t try to beat them up at practice and make them quit.” Boussard said things are coming together between him and his fellow returning starters on the line: senior Cole Lapoint and junior Matthew Lege. “We’ve been working on a lot of drills,” he said, “(but)

I’ll lead you there, just follow me.’” Broussard is in his second year as a starter with the Wildcats, though he saw playing time as a sophomore. The 6-foot, 260- pound Broussard will be a two-sport athlete for the ﬁrst time this season, as he will be playing baseball for the Wildcats for the ﬁrst time. West St. Mary loaded with three Division I players NEW IBERIA - West St. Mary head coach Ryan Antoine should have a lot to smile about this football season. Antoine, beginning his second year as the head man, is coming off a tough 3-7 year in Class 3A. There are a handful of teams in District 6-2A who may not be too excited to see the West St. Mary Wolves in their district. “We have the numbers but we still have to ﬁnd a way to put it all together,” said Antoine. On paper, West St. Mary is loaded with talent. For starters, Jerald Hawkins, (6-6, 290, Sr.) has already committed to play for the LSU Tigers as an offensive lineman. He plays tight end for West St. Mary. Then there is “Mr. Do It All” Jontrey Tillman, who is the Tigers’ returning tailback. Tillman (5-9, 180, Sr.) had 2,200 all purpose yards and 19 touchdowns at tailback. He rushed for 1,400 yards and had 800 yards receiving. With an ACT score of 25 and a 4.0 grade point average, Tillman will be carrying the football for the Stanford Cardinals after he graduates. Most teams would love to have two Division I players, but West St. Mary is blessed with three. DaiJuan Stewart (5-10, 165, Sr.) committed to play for Southern Methodist Uni-

District 6-2 A versity at wide receiver. Stewart started last year at quarterback but then moved to wideout at the midway point of the season. He caught for more than 400 yards and eight touchdowns in six games. The Tigers have nine returners on offense and seven on defense. “While we have returners, for us to be successful, we have to stay healthy,” Antoine added. Trent Delahoussaye, the son of former St. Martinville head coach Carroll Delahoussaye, is making a name for himself in Loreauville. After ﬁve seasons, he has compiled up a 33-19 record. Last year his squad went 11-2 and lost to Evangel 41-0 in the third round of the Class 2A playoffs. On offense, the Tigers have six returning starters and return eight on defense.

The Tigers still have speed in the backﬁeld with the skills of tailback Nick Julien, who rushed for 1,400 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. Delahoussaye said he is counting on his defense to carry the team. Si Theriot (6-0, 180, Sr.) returns at linebacker. He had 88 solo tackles and 60 assists in 2010. Catholic High’s Panthers are looking to improve on its 4-7 record in 2010. Under the guidance of head coach Keith Menard, the Panthers have eight returners on offense and six on defense. The backﬁeld stays in place for the second year in a row with Joe Lissard (62, 203, Jr.) at quarterback and D’Shawn Etienne (510, 180, Jr.) at running back. The defense is anchored by linebackers Jared Bullock (5-9, 200, Jr.) and Hunt Simon (5-9, 160, Jr.) The Jeanerette Tigers

are coming off a 5-6 year where they lost to St. Charles in the ﬁrst round of the playoffs. Head coach Terry Lewis is looking to replace 4,000 yard rusher Anthony Williams, who signed with Alcorn University in Mississippi. “You can not replace Anthony,” Lewis said. “He

was a great kid.” The Tigers, who ﬁnished with only 19 players when the season was over, will be looking not only for Williams’ replacements but as many bodies as possible. “Numbers is our problem,” Lewis said.

Rodrigue From Page 23 When asked if he preferred to play linebacker or defensive end, Rodrigue showed the “team player” aspect of his nature that Delcambre Head Coach Darcy Delcambre said made him such a joy to coach. “Defensive end,” he said, “because that’s my position.” Delcambre has a simple explanation for Rodrigue’s answer to that question. “Mark’s one of those kids,” said Delcambre. “He understands the word team. “He understands that word and he has a really good work ethic.” And when asked if he thought he could repeat as the team’s leading tackler, Rodrigue’s simple response belied his unassuming nature. “That’s my goal,” he said, “to do that again.” Still, to repeat as the team’s leading tackler after moving from linebacker to end is not a likely scenario, and Rodrigue surely gets that. Delcambre had an explanation for that as well. “He understands that, ‘If I do my job at defensive end, the linebacker will make the tackles most of the time,’” said Delcambre. “He’s one of those kids that understands the team concept.

“If you ask Mark to do something, or tell him how to do something, or show him how it needs to be done, he will do it. He will try his damnedest to do it the way you ask him to do it.” Delcambre said it is in Rodrigue’s nature to do everything he can for his team. “He swarms at the ball,” said Delcambre. “He has a good nose for the ball. We had him working at the linebacker position, but we decided that it would be better for the team if we moved him to an end, so that we could get more pressure from him.” Rodrique is also slated to play left guard this season, but Delcambre said he hopes to avoid using his top tackler that much. “Hopefully one of our younger guys will be able to come around, so we can rest Mark a little bit on offense. So he can have fresher legs on defense. But right now, he’s one of our seniors and he has some experience on offensive line, so he’s in there right now,” Delcambre said. Rodrigue said his coach’s respect for him is mutual. “Coach Darcy is always there for us, even when we’re not on the ﬁeld,” he said. “He teaches us that

it takes dedication to obtain your goals in life.” Rodrigue has been playing football since he was nine years old. He is also part of the Panthers’ track and ﬁeld team. As Delcambre moves back up to class 2A, Rodrigue said he has faith in his coach and his teammates that they will still succeed. “I know our team can do it,” he said. “It is you against your opponent, bottom line.” Rodrigue said that he does feel some pressure, though, to perform in his ﬁnal high school football season. “There is always pressure to make this year better than the year before,” he said. “Knowing that this is your last year to play footbal, all you can think about is giving your all and being the best you can be. As seniors, we should step it up.” For Delcambre, that sentiment is just par for the course as far as Rodrigue is concerned “He’s a solid kid,” Delcambre said, “and he’s one of the kids that we have to depend a lot on this year.”

Bourque From Page 18 Destin Dietrich, is in his third year after taking over for longtime Bobcats Head Coach Jacob Byler. Bourque said he found the transition to be a smooth one. “It wasn’t that hard for me,” he said. “It was my first year (and) I was good for change. It’s not like I had learned the offense three years in a row and had to come back and learn a new one.” Bourque said over time he has adjusted to and grown to like Dietrich’s system. “The first two years he was here, we weren’t too successful,” he said. “(But) not every program in a first year, starting from scratch, is going to be on a high.” Bourque said he felt the team has “a real good chance” of bettering last year’s 4-6, 1-4 record. “We had a lot of games last year that we could have won,” he said. “They were really close games and I guess we just didn’t have enough to finish it out.” As the Dietrich era progresses, Bourque said he is expecting to continue to build success, especially with the amount of returning starters the Bobcats will field this season. “I mean, last year we some returning starters too,” he said. “I think that this year, it’s the third year, and I think that everybody that’s starting knows what they’re doing because they’ve been in it since they got into high school. “All the juniors, all the know is what coach D. has taught them.” Bourque said he expected the shift to a new district to

bring a new set of challenges, but nothing too different from what the Bobcats have faced in recent years. “We got rid of Notre Dame (from 5-3A), which is always a tough opponent,” he said, “but now they’re bringing in Patterson, which is also tough.” Bourque is multi-sport athlete (baseball, football and track) and was the 3A state champion in the 400 meter dash last season. He said that his speed helps in football, but that it is not all-important. “It’s different in football,” he said. “You need to be able to do more than just run. “When you break into the open ﬁeld, I guess it is a big help to be able to break away,” he said, but he stressed that he’s not always breaking out. “It’s not always like that,” he said.

Gueydan’s Zaunbrecher still believes in the Bears

Gueydan senior right tackle Austin Zaunbecher believes the Bears can do better than the bottom-ofthe-pack ﬁnish that many are predicting. “I think we’ll win most of our games,” said Zaunbrecher, with a look of serious and determination in his eyes. One gets the feeling that he will do his part to make that happen. Zaunbrecher is in his second season of football and has been starting at his current position the entire time. He is expecting to play on the defensive line this season as well. He said he likes playing the line. “You’ve got to be at the top of your game in order to play that position,” he said. Zaunbrecher, 17, the son of Martin and Mary Zaun-

brecher of Gueydan, does not seem the type to mess around. He has spent his past three summers working with his father and his uncle in the family diesel mechanic business in Gueydan. They mostly work on tractors, Zaunbrecher says. When asked if he is a good mechanic, Zaunbrecher almost laughed, almost. “Not really,” he said, smiling, “but I try.” Zaunbrecher also plays baseball for the Bears. He plays left ﬁeld and designated hitter. Zaunbrecher, who approximated his high school GPA at an impressive 3.9, said he intends on going to college after graduation. He said he would like to go to UL so that he can stay close to home. He said he wants to major in mechanical engineering.

talented receivers and a great quarterback who trusts his receivers. I think it will work out great. 6. VC is heavy on the seniors this season. Do you feel that there are more expectations this season? R.D.: We want to do more than what is expected of us. We have a lot of talent on this football team and I believe, along with many others, that we are going to have a great season.

5. Coach Faulk says he intends to run a wide open offense. As a receiver, how do you feel about the Eagles possibly incorporating more of a passing game?

R.D.: We just have to keep a positive attitude, no matter who it is we match up to.

R.D.: Me and Aaron have been together since freshman year. I think this year is the

R.D.: VC is a very small school which gives us that bond. It is like we are one big family. Not many schools have that tight bond like we do. 13. What are your plans after high school? If college, have you selected one and what do you think you might major in? R.D.: I’m hoping to go play college ball wherever I can. If that doesn’t happen I play on attending UL and majoring in Sports Medicine

Smith - A Ragin’ Cajun After sitting out a year, Jelani Smith ready to play

Abbeville High graduate Jelani Smith will ﬁnally be a Ragin’ Cajun this upcoming football season. He transferred from the University of Arkansas following the 2009 Fall Semester. The Meridional sat with Smith about the upcoming season. 1) You had a solid career at Abbeville High. Was high school a good experience for you and in what ways did it prepare you for life and college football? (Jelani Smith) High school was a good experience for me. It prepared me in a lot of ways. When my coach came (I got a new coach named Coach Toomer), being that he was from the SEC, he knew all the roads to take to get me where I needed to be. So it did help me a lot to go towards college. 2) Can you describe what it was like coming back from a season-ending hand injury as a freshman? (J.S.) Starting as a true freshman at Arkansas was my goal. It was a dream for me, but once I got hurt, it kind of set me back. I don’t want to say it pushed me down, but in coming back from it, I succeeded, I guess. 3) Word is you moved back home to be closer to

family. Can you explain that and how it is being back? (J.S.) Being back around family is great. That’s all I can say about it. It’s great, because I have all the support that I need. Being around my daughter every day gives me something to push for every day. 4) You had to sit out after transferring to UL from Arkansas. Are you looking forward to ﬁnally getting back and playing football? (J.S.) I’m ready. That’s how I describe that. I’m ready to get back on the ﬁeld and do what God blessed me to do. 5) UL has a new coach in Mark Hudspeth. Do you

like what you’ve seen in the direction he is taking the team? (J.S.) I love everything about what Coach Hud is doing with us, because I know he’s pushing us in the right direction. And then, coming from an SEC system, I know that for years to come Coach Hud is going to have this university as one of the top schools. 6) The Sun Belt Coach’s Poll has UL ﬁnishing eighth out of nine teams. Do you feel this sort of thing is distracting or maybe motivating and what are the players saying? SMITH

LSU linebacker Baker set for first year as starter Despite starting for the ﬁrst time, LSU senior linebacker Ryan Baker is widely considered one of the defensive leaders for the Tigers and takes over a critical spot as the team’s weakside linebacker. Baker sat down with Abbeville Meridional correspondent William Weathers to talk about the 2011 season. Q: How much did you change your body over the summer? A: Me and (strength and conditioning) coach (Tommy) Mofﬁtt got together at the end of last spring. He thought I was a little light so I put a lot emphasis on building lean muscle and explosiveness. I’m around 240 (over 228 last year) and I feel good with it.”

Q: What are some of things you picked up from playing with former All-SEC linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, now of the Buffalo Bills? A: Leadership and communication. Kelvin put a big emphasis on communicating play throughout and I want to implement those same characteristics into my game. Just really have an understanding of the defense and communicate that throughout the defense.” Q: Have you set any goals for yourself? A: We all want to win a national championship. Individually, I think everything’s going to fall into place as long as we reach our goals as a team.”

Living in that (Florida) area, he was a big-time recruit coming out of high school and I watched him play. I tried to model my game after him. He was a physical specimen who is a fast, big guy.” Q: Did you set out with any speciﬁc goals this summer? A: I put a big emphasis on ﬁnishing plays. Last year I went through each play and I was kind of lackadaisical. It’s not distracting for us because nobody’s out here putting out the time and effort like we’re doing. Nobody’s here with us. 7) Speaking of motivation, UL opens the season against Oklahoma State on Sept. 3, a team that came to Cajun Field last season and beat the Cajuns 5428. How do you feel about traveling to take them on this year and is there talk among the players about payback? (J.S.) As for payback, we’ll leave that alone. But I feel like it’s good for us because it’s going to be a good test. Once you play against the best, you know where your team is at. 8) UL has not had a winning season since 2005. What do you think it will take to turn that around this year? (J.S.) If we just keep our hard work and our effort going, I’m talking about our motivation, how we’ve been (doing it), I think everything’s going to turn out okay for us. But we’ll just wait and see how everything turns out. 9) Did being away from south Louisiana make you homesick? What did you miss most? (J.S.) The thing that I missed most was the food, the food down here and my family.

To see him go through that experience gave me hope.” Q: Where do your leadership qualities come from? A: Probably my parents. It’s more of a self-motivating thing for me. I feel like in order for the defense to work I have to make plays I can make and motivate myself.” Q: You have two former teammates in Kelvin Sheppard and Perry Riley both currently in the NFL. From Page 17 “I had to walk my girlfriend (Amber Lege) in a sling for homecoming.” Hoffpauir said the break didn’t hurt until the next morning. “That was the worst pain,” he said, “and then I had to go to the orthopedic surgeon, and Oh my God.” Hoffpauir did not need surgery, but he was out for seven weeks to allow the bone to heal. When Hoffpauir returned to the field, Kaplan Head Coach Stephen Lotief moved him to offensive and defensive tackle. “I really like it,” he said. “I like the move (and) I’m having a lot of fun.” Kaplan finished 8-2 on the season, went into the playoffs and beat Eunice 21-14 for the first Pirates’ playoff win in 14 years. They went on to lose to Patterson 48-38 in the next game. Patterson is now in the same district as Kaplan, and the Pirates will travel to play them in week five. “We don’t hate them because we lost,” said Hoffpauir. “We’re just looking for a rematch, that’s all I can say. “We’re ready for a battle. We have great coaches; we’ve been preparing.” Hoffpauir said he drew inspiration last year against the bigger Patterson team from his friend and oncefellow linebacker Jay Schexneider, who has since graduated. “He was a small guy, maybe 170 (pounds) on a good day,” said Hoffpauir. “(But) that kid would just hit you; he wasn’t scared. Any time I felt nervous or scared

I would just look at Jay and see how ready he was and I would just feed off him.” Hoffpauir said this season he would draw that same inspiration from the Kaplan coaches. “Coach Lotief really does a great job of getting us psyched up and pumped up for the games,” he said. Hoffpauir said that, despite Lotief’s intimidating reputation, he ﬁts in just ﬁne in Kaplan. “As soon as he got to Kaplan everybody just embraced him,” said Hoffpauir. “I love him. He’s like a father to me. He’s a great coach and he doesn’t tolerate much. He’s basically like my dad.”

Hoffpauir, 17, has played football his whole life. His father, Darrell Hoffpauir of Gueydan, was his peewee coach. His mother, Gail Baudoin lives there also. Hoffpauir said he is healed up this year and is ready for a new season, suggesting he got a taste of success last season and is ready for more. “We did something amazing,” he said. “It’s been a long time since anybody in Kaplan history has gotten to the second round. “After the Eunice game, I cried. I don’t know why. I mean, we won and I still cried. It was crazy.”

Harvest Time moves to eight-man football Abbeville-based Harvest Time Christian Academy is moving to the eightman football division of the Louisiana Christian School Athletic Association for the 2011-2012 school year. Harvest Time Assistant Football Coach Steven Delino II said the reason is a reduction in the number of players this year as compared to years past. “We lost six seniors,” said Delino. “That’s a big hit.” Harvest Time is expecting to ﬁeld 15 players this season, though that number may increase. Delino said the eightman game should not be so different from 11-man football. “It’s ﬁve men on the line of scrimmage instead of seven,” said Delino. “From there...we’re pretty blind. (It’s going to be) a learning experience.” He said he expects the club to return to 11-man football either next year or the following year. “We have a good group of eighth graders and a few ninth graders,” he said. “So, the future looks bright. “We’ll be back in 11man (football) soon. Harvest Time is getting their season underway this weekend, as they travel to Lafayette for their Jamboree game. Harvest Time begins play on Friday, Aug. 19 when they travel to play New Orleans Home School. That game and the Li-

ons’ following game on Thursday, Aug. 25 against Acadiana Home School will be 11-man games. “We’re still playing a few 11-man games,” said Delino, “but with 15 people, if a few guys go down it’d be bad.” The Acadiana Home School game will be at Polomo Field in A.A. Comeaux Park in Abbeville, where the Lions play their home games. Their eight-man game is a home game on Thursday, Sep. 1 against Ashley Christian Academy. That game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start. Harvest Time’s regular season starts on the road at Sacred Heart Home School on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Ragin’ Cajuns look to mix air, ground attack in 2011 The Ragin' Cajuns were a dominate run team from 2005-08, but quickly transitioned to a spread offense in 2009 and 2010. New offensive coordinator Jay Johnson was known for his powerful rushing offense at Southern Miss and for his wide open passing attack at Central Michigan. In determining his offense with the Cajuns, Johnson is leaving his options open. Look for the team to – at least early in the season – have a split attack of run and pass. With several newcomers expected to make an impact, the offense might be a constantly evolving force. Once Johnson gets a feel for the personnel, the offense should mirror the team’s strengths. Ideally, Johnson wants his offense to remain as balanced as possible, thriving off of play-action. In the end, the offense will likely blend with what the starting quarterback does best. Among the open position battles, the starting quarterback will not be named until the fall. Nearly all of the offensive positions have openings, including running back, offensive guard and wide receiver. Due to injuries, the Cajuns started three different signal callers in 2010 and each found success. A competitive spring battle left Chris Masson and Blaine Gautier in the hunt to earn the starting nod this fall. UL managed to rush for over 100 yards in just four games last season, winning only once. Four very highly touted prep running backs enter the fold in 2011. There

is potential for the newcomers to see playing time, but it will be determined on a caseby-case basis. The Cajuns wide receivers were widely inconsistent in 2010, allowing the team’s AllAmerican tight end Ladarius Green and freshman running back Aaron Spikes to finish first and second in receptions, yards and touchdowns, respectively. The offensive line lost three senior starters for the second straight season. The line is very young, with only five players having FBS playing time, but inexperienced talent can be found. The Ragin’ Cajuns have used a base 4-3 defense for years, but began to periodically show 3-4 looks begin-

New defensive coordinator Greg Stewart prefers to give multiple presnap looks. Stewart’s hybrid 4-3 base can give a 3-4, 4-3, 5-2 or an eight-man front look without changing personnel. The goal is to confuse the quarterback presnap without sacriﬁcing the ability to stop the run or get to the quarterback. With pressure packed defensive schemes, the defensive line and linebackers are expected to work in rotation. Luckily the Cajuns have the depth up front to roll players without a drop in talent. The team used spring practice to prepare for the new schemes. With little experience in the system, Stew-

art believes his players will develop a better feel for his defense with more practice reps. The Cajuns have terrific depth along the defensive front, leaning on more than three deep during spring drills. Eight linebackers should see playing time in a rotation.
