Welcome Message from the President Welcome to our 13th Annual Conference. For most of us, this is a return to a well-known forum, while for those new at this conference; you are in for a treat. The OAG annual meeting is like no other. We have an opportunity to catch up with friends and acquaintances, establish new links with trusted members of our community and, as always, to learn. The topic this year, THE GI WATER COOLER, is a highlight of the subjects that are on our mind, the stuff you want to know, so you can answer the classic question: What’s up doc? This year’s swine flu has merely reminded us of some of the infection issues we have to deal with on a daily basis, issues that affect us, our patients, and our equipment. Our local environment in the endo unit is also changing, with more people, forms and requirements to deal with. We used to look to the US with some envy, but perhaps we should re-evaluate. We will hear about changes to GI practice in the US and what may be around the corner for Ontario. There will be lots to hear and ask questions about on-call endoscopy and the evolving role of Cancer Care Ontario in our practices. And to top it all off, we have our annual debate … this year asks the question “what is the best GI anesthesia for now and the future?” Our companion program is always popular, and this year’s private tour of the new AGO should be in that tradition of success. Our Saturday Gala looks to be another hit: Formal and Motown. On Sunday, we will hear important information about OMA and CPSO issues, billing information and the issues we, as gastroenterologists, will face in the coming year. For me, this is a sweet end to my three years as your president. It is with both sadness and eager anticipation of continuing success that I pass the torch to Dr. David Baron, your next president. I am sure that he, working with our Board, staff and a growing and enthusiastic membership, will take OAG to new heights. See you at the Water Cooler! Jeffrey Axler, MD, FRCP(C) President, OAG

Message from the Conference Co-Chairs

Jamie Gregor

We have called this "The GI Water Cooler.” Of course, the term is purely figurative. As gastroenterologists, we aren’t routinely found congregating at such a location. Perhaps the theme should be ‘tales from the dictation room.’ That’s where we have some downtime between procedures as we wait for the room to be turned over. That’s when we run into colleagues and discuss interesting cases. That’s also when we discuss matters of the practical importance, not purely clinical. That is the essence of the theme for the topics this weekend. We hope this meeting will stimulate discussion amongst you and your colleagues. Talk these things over between now and the meeting, and come prepared to hear the opinion of experts in these fields.

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW Have you ever wondered what precautions are necessary for your patients that are MRSA or VRE positive? How do the new College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) rules for reporting personal history of infectious disease impact you? Is it possible for an adequately processed scope to carry pathogens? These are some examples of the infection control issues that are prominent in Ontario’s endoscopy suites today. This session aims to educate the practitioner on what infectious risks procedures carry, and how best to manage infection control processes in their office and endoscopy suite. BOY IT'S GETTING CROWDED IN HERE: CHANGES IN THE ENDOSCOPY SUITE 9:50 am - 10:10 am The GI Doctor Report Card: Speaker: Dr. John I. Allen What's the value of your service? 10:10 am - 10:30 am On-Call Endoscopy Speaker: Dr. Jamie Gregor 10:30 am - 10:50 am The Evolving Role of Speaker: Dr. Terry Sullivan CCO in Colonoscopy in Ontario 10:50 am - 11:10 am Panel Discussion Moderator: Dr. Earle Morgan 11:10 am - 11:30 am Nutrition Break PRESENTATION OVERVIEW The endoscopy suite has been evolving over the years. With each advance in imaging techniques, there are more and bigger equipment panels and more tools, so much so that the Endoscopist is no longer the main source of the “hot air” generated in the room. The amount of documentation has increased to the point that the physician and nursing staff are now spending a lot of time recording every aspect of the patient’s stay in the room. Sending a specimen to the lab is now a computerized process and it is time-consuming. The new Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) Colonoscopy data tracking form has added to the workload. On-call Endoscopists are competing for staff and resources and hospitals are pressuring physicians to “sit on” patient until “tomorrow or Monday, preferably.” The speakers in this section, will capsulate the changes and will put into perspective how we have responded or should be responding to these changes. Are these changes or advancements in endoscopy and are they improving patient care?

Is anaesthesia in an endoscopy room appropriate? Anaesthesia in the endoscopy room is a controversial subject that has evoked emotions on both sides of the debate. We have recruited two excellent speakers and experts in the field of anaesthesia in endoscopy. The discussion should evoke an interesting discussion among the conference participants. Will there be a consensus? RESIDENTS' ROUND TABLE LUNCHEON 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm Residents' Round Table

Companion Program

Shaping What We See: The Conversations between Art and the Museums that House it. Our speaker, Dr. Shelley Hornstein, will be addressing the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) building itself as a container shaping the ideas we think about as we visit the exhibits and how we read works in different institutions differently. Why does the AGO transformation by Frank Gehry matter? How do paintings dialogue with each other and with us in different museum spaces? Why is visiting an exhibition in one museum an altogether different experience from visiting the same exhibition in another?

Dr. Shelley Hornstein is a graduate of the Université des Sciences Humaines, Strasbourg, France, Professor Hornstein has taught at York University since 1985. Her courses include Memory and Place, Paris as Modernist Dream, The Celluloid City, No Place like Home, and The Metropolis Revisited. Prior to York University, she taught at Concordia and Laval Universities. She is a member of York’s graduate programs in Art History, Culture and Communications, and Social and Political Thought. She has served as Associate Dean, Co-Director of the Centre for Feminist Research, and twice Chair of Department of Fine Arts, Atkinson College.
