Freshers’ Week is cancelled We’ve been organising Freshers’ Weeks at LSE for as long as anyone can remember, and quite frankly we’re bored of it. So, Freshers’ Week is cancelled this year. Sorry. But before you rip out this page in an indignant fit of righteous anger, don’t think that we’ll be slacking off. We’re going to throw a festival, instead! ‘Freshers’ Week’ no longer describes the amazing events we’ve got planned. Besides, it’s for all LSE students – undergrad or postgrad – not just Freshers. And we couldn’t fit all this into a week! There will be a Village Fête, live music, a Silent Disco, the first ever International Film Festival, the famous non-alcohol Unwind Party, Freshers’ Fayre, Sports Day and, of course, Fresh – the brand-spanking new name for LSE’s big Friday night, renowned for being the best student club night in London. We’re sure you’ve heard it all before, but LSE really is an amazing place to be. Students hail from more countries than are represented at the UN and come together with the world’s best academics right in the centre of the world’s most exciting cit-
ies: London! We have more societies per student than pretty much anywhere else, and there’s just so much to do! The LSE Festival aims to show you the very best of LSE and its active student body. Our strength is in our diversity: one night you could be smoking sheesha with the Arabic Society, another you could be at dancing the night away at our brand new Friday nighter Fresh. Either way, you’re going to meet people you could never meet anywhere else. So take all the clichés and throw them out the window – this is what LSE is really about. Your first day Inductions are where very important, powerful or egotistical people invite you to be their captive audience for bad jokes and lots and lots of very useful information. Of course, you also get introduced to Howard Davies, our Director, for the first time. Ever the showman, he is bound to at least get a wry smile out of you, and lift your spirits from that hangover or tiredness. Equally important, the Students’ Union General Secretary will be there to chat about student life and the fun side of LSE. Undergraduates, postgraduates, General Course and PHD students all get their own inductions. There is a Student Services Induction that is also very important to attend to hear all about financial support, welfare, rules and regulations - basically all the information you need to avoid things going wrong. There is also a special International Students’ Induction, run by the International Students’ Officer. These have been completely full over the past few years - they’re that popular, and we’re always told how useful it was. Be prepared for a rollercoaster ride of information! This is where LSE’s huge range of societies will ask you to part with £1 or £2 to join their society, sign up to their email list and hopefully become actively involved for the next academic year. You’ll find every kind of society there – national, cultural, religious, political, campaigning, departmental, career-orientated and social. From Albania to Women in Business, everything you could ever imagine is there. But don’t just stick to the things you’ve already done – try something new and you never know what you might end up doing! And if you don’t find what you’re looking for, you can start up a new society later yourself!
The Students’ Union will also showcase its campaigns – from the Anti-Racism Campaign to the Women’s Campaign – and give you an opportunity to sign-up for them too (and these are also free to all!). If you miss it, you can sign up later – but this really is the day when you’ll see why LSE is known as the world’s most active student body.

Two Londons, One Tour
Saturday 4th October 11AM: Join the tour at LSE 1PM: Rally in Trafalgar Square 3PMish: Curry on Brick Lane London is massive and magnificent – it can’t be over-hyped. Over 7 million people all in one place; more than 300 languages spoken daily; every race, religion and background from all over the world. It would be a shame if we just showed you Buckingham Palace! There are Two Londons – the good clean fun of tourist attractions that are, in fairness, worth seeing, but also the city’s more interesting, edgier side. We’ll bring you the first tour to unite both. You’ll see some of Central London’s most famous tourist hotspots, do some fun activities on the way (so you’re not just looking at things and taking pictures!), before being taken to Brick Lane in London’s East End – a centre of cultural and social change for centuries, in the heart of one of London’s most diverse and vibrant communities. After the tour, we’ll head to Trafalgar Square where we will be joining the UK’s biggest ever rally against child poverty. One in three children in the UK live in poverty, and the End Child Poverty campaign aims to put an end to that. Then we’ll head off to the East End for a delcious meal!

Every Thursday 1PM, Old Theatre Part pantomine, part debating chamber: the Union General Meeting is the most fun you will ever have in a lecture theatre. The UGM is where you set Union policy – any student can turn up, propose motions, speak for or against motions, and vote for and against motions (as well as ask questions of elected officers). Motions become policy, and policies of the Union lead to campaigns that change LSE and wider society for
the better; motions on diverse topics from the standard of teaching to a Living Wage for staff have led to success. It’s the only weekly meeting of its kind in the UK and it’s part of what makes the LSE unique.
