Say Yes to Critical Thinking Say Yes to Courage Say Yes to Creativity Say Yes to Citizenship

The Four Cs The Four Cs, defined by LREI’s stellar faculty, inform our work with all students, preK-12. These four attributes develop along with our students as they move through the school and represent all that we hope for them as future LREI alumni. By supporting The Fund for LREI, you are supporting the Four Cs in all three divisions.

Critical Thinking Critical thinking is the ability to discern patterns, challenge assumptions, and be open to a variety of ideas and perspectives. A critical thinker looks at details and also sees the big picture and is able to travel multiple paths to a solution.

Courage is standing up for what you believe, taking risks, and persevering in the face of difficulty. A courageous person is willing to try — and to try again if

faced with failure.

Faculty and Staff Donors.............................19

Creativity Creativity is the following of a path to an answer, undeterred by past experiences, though informed by them and unfettered by the limits of earlier experiences, failures or frustrations. Creativity often leads to a “Eureka!” moment.

Citizenship Citizenship is meaningful, respectful participation in communities of all kinds: personal, local, global. Citizenship includes a sense of how to engage (lead, follow, challenge) in any one and all of them.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear LREI Community, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express my appreciation for your deep commitment to our school and to the success of its programs. Your loyalty, enthusiasm, and generosity in support of our progressive mission is captured in the work of our many committees and in the school’s philanthropic achievements for the 2015-2016 school year. We are so thankful for this year’s inspiring participation. Due to the immense support of hundreds of dedicated donors and volunteers, the LREI community raised record totals for The Fund for LREI, Senior Gift, and the Art Auction. This year, more than 800 donors contributed over $1.3M to The Fund for LREI, our annual fund, a record high for LREI. In the spring, we hosted our Art Auction, this year’s largest community fundraising event. What began as a grassroots parent initiative over forty years ago has grown into a biennial event that affirms and celebrates our school’s commitment to the Arts. All proceeds from the Auction directly benefit our financial aid program, helping to ensure our progressive educational experience remains accessible to our families. This year, we raised over $200,000 towards this initiative. Above all, none of these achievements would be possible without Phil’s leadership, our three principals’ dedication, and the faculty, administration, and staff’s efforts to make LREI the school that we dearly love. Your continued participation makes an enormous difference for all of us. Thank you for your commitment to LREI.

Warm regards,

Amy Zimmerman Chair, LREI Board of Trustees

CITIZENSHIP

“World Language students park their U.S. passports at the classroom door and commit to communicating in a language other than their own. Our practice is interactive, inquiry-based, and collaborative in an effort to inform global citizenship in our students.” -Adele deBiasi Pelz, World Language Department Chair

LETTER FROM DIRECTOR PHIL KASSEN Dear LREI Community, Thank you. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your commitment. Thank you for recognizing the importance of the progressive educational experience we offer to your children. To be a student at LREI is to be challenged to learn and to achieve in a number of ways. Yes, our students develop competence and expertise in all of the academic and artistic areas you expect students to be exposed to in school. Their academic preparation is wide and deep. Your gift to LREI also supports the students’ development of skills that live outside of the boundaries of one specific discipline and any particular school year, the Four Cs: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Courage, and Citizenship. Our progressive program provides many opportunities and experiences that challenge students to develop these skills that will be required to succeed in a changing world. Yes, one needs to know how to read and write, how to function mathematically, and so on, but when you have to practice reasoning, when you are evaluated on your ability to solve problems creatively, when you are pushed to take risks and to develop the skills necessary to be a participating member of our democratic society, your long term success is assured. Speaking of assured success…we are so grateful for the number of community members who support The Fund for LREI and the overwhelming generosity demonstrated through these gifts. We could not meet our mission without your support. We could not fulfill our promise to our students without your commitment and we would not be able to honor Elisabeth Irwin’s legacy without your generous support. We are ever grateful.

Warmly,

Phil Kassen

“I support The Fund because LREI encourages my daughter to ‘have a voice’ and stand up for what is right. I am proud of her courage, which enabled her, an ally, to be a strong co-leader of the High School’s Gender Sexuality Alliance.” -Nancy Shapiro, 12th Grade Parent LREI ANNUAL REPORT 2015-16

Azucar! Ours are many cultures within the Latino/a community unified by the Spanish language. The study of Spanish language allows our children, who are directly touched by Latino/a identities, to understand and appreciate different ways of life, develop an international perspective, support one another as Spanish speakers, and share their whole selves with the diverse community at LREI and the wider global society.
