5 MY DAY /// FIVE

My day

Hello, my name is Jasper. I am from the US and live with my family in Brooklyn, New York. I’m a 5th-grade student at an elementary school called PS32. My mom is American, and my dad is Italian, but he was born and raised here. I can speak both languages, but my first language is English. My teacher says I should feel fortunate to be bilingual. My dad and uncles always speak to me in Italian except if my friends are around.

My parents divorced when I was five, so I also have two homes. I mainly live with my mom and my sister Tess, but we go to our dad every other weekend. He lives in a neighborhood not far from us with his new partner and her son, Cody. It’s nice to have an older stepbrother. We get along well. He’s into soccer, whereas I like spending my free time taking drama lessons and ge ing be er at playing the guitar. We see each other quite o en and have dinner together during the week.

SIX /// MY DAY

My dad runs a local restaurant and small store in Carroll Gardens a few blocks from my school. Sometimes I pass by with my friends in the a ernoon if we are hungry. My mom thinks that’s great as she o en comes home late from work – she works all the way over in Queens and spends more than two hours commuting back and forth.

I love hanging out with friends and doing fun things together. Usually, we all have different a ernoon activities and homework during the week, but most days we get to spend some time playing a bit of basketball in the school yard or in the nearby park before we go home or continue to soccer practice, music, drama, dance, or gymnastics. My best friend, Fletcher, has a cute dog. He and his twin sister take turns walking their dog a er school. I like to join him every now and then. I’d love to have my own dog. But my mom won’t allow us. She thinks it’s too much work. Maybe – one day!!
