what’s new?

Dear Readers, As the snowy season is starting around us here in Switzerland, we can remind ourselves of what this winter time is really all about: reducing our speed and activity, sitting around the fire and telling each other the stories of our last year or beyond. In the old understanding the winter months with the long dark nights are an opportunity for us to be appreciative of all we have learnt and gathered so far in our lives. And the night time is ­essential to dream ourselves anew: Who are we becoming now? What wants to emerge in our lives right now?

So what is new in the Innovationsdorf, at the KaosPilots and the changels with all of our partners and the ­surrounding community of change-makers?

We have grown: We are currently 85 creative entrepreneurs with about 25 companies and organizations in the Innovationsdorf building – all dedicated to innovation and interdisciplinary exchange. Yes, we seem to have ­become the largest co-working space in Switzerland. We have started with our new team SUI4 of ­KaosPilot students and now have almost all continents present: Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America.

We are growing closer and stronger as a community. We get to know ourselves better with our gifts, talents and dreams. We are also more and more willing to challenge the difficult conversations as a community of ­entre­preneurs. What is working and what is not? And what is needed to strengthen ourselves?

An old wisdom says: “I am only as strong as my community, and my community is only as strong as I am”. We need each other for our growing, learning and for creating the sustainable and regenerative ­structures.

We depend on each other in more ways than we think. The age of the lone wolf is over.

How do we grow strong as a community and how do I grow strong as an individual?

We need to have the yearning to really want to change what does not work. And for this, we first need to ­challenge our own beliefs and images about our ways of doing things.

Everything that happens in our organizations comes back to how well educated and trained we are as leaders.

If I create a “shadow” as a leader by trying to be nice, the entire community will feel these consequences. We need each other to speak to our blind spots. This may sound like a no-brainer, but newness is created in every company when inner change is happening in each one of us.

Growing as a community of hungry learners has a lot to do with our training of our “inner pilot”. We have started this journey with all of our KaosPilot students through an old native American personal development training called the Council Guide Training. What does it mean to be self-responsible and self-accountable?

How can we move together like a community of entrepreneurs where every voice matters?

Today, three years after having started this development as a Innovationsdorf community, I can feel, sense and see the pay-off for the effort. We all are much more in a flow, especially when things are getting tough and challenging. Or like a visitor told us after a day at the School and Innovationsdorf: “I feel inspired here thanks to this space of non judgement that you have created with each other.”

What is new? It is the newness we can create inside of ourselves.

What do you see? We are curious.

Hast du Geschäftsideen, die du umsetzen möchtest? Hast du es satt, immer volle Kraft voraus zu geben und doch nicht auf substanzielle Resultate zu kommen? Willst du Spass und Freude haben an deiner Arbeit und deinen Projekten?

Wir changels haben letztes Jahr ein einjähriges Trainingsprogramm im KaosPiloten-Spirit lanciert: NEW BUSINESS.

der Geschäftsfelder unserer Absolventinnen und Absolventen ist breit und farbenfroh: Fotograf, Projekt­leitung, Troubleshooting für Flugunternehmungen, Beratung für nachhaltige Energielösungen, buddhistische Sterbebegleitung, Kochkursen und Kaffee- und Organisationskultur­ entwicklung.

NEW BUSINESS #1 ist mit sechs Teilnehmenden und ihren Geschäftsideen gestartet. Gemeinsam forschten wir und schafften Businesspläne und Kommunikationsformen, die massgeschneidert und attraktiv sind und die ganzheitlich und enkeltauglich wirken. Fragen an die Teilnehmenden waren: Was sind meine Talente und Stärken? Wie schaffe ich damit eine Geschäftsrealität, die mich täglich inspiriert?

Wie nutze ich meine Talente für mich und die Leute rund um mich herum? Und wie kommuniziere ich meine Träume in einer starken und stimmigen Form?

Was NEW BUSINESS vor allem vermittelt: Geschäftsentwicklung verläuft in Wellen und Zyklen. Es gibt Phasen, in denen alles extrem Spass macht, und es gibt Momente, in denen UnternehmerInnen das Gefühl haben, sie w ­ ürden nie Erfolg haben mit dem, was sie sich vorgenommen ­haben. Für viele Teilnehmende war es neu zu erkennen, dass dieses Auf und Ab normal ist und einfach zum Unternehmertum dazu gehört. Es ist eines, zu lernen, wie man ­kreativ zu neuen Ideen kommt. Und es ist etwas anderes, in den Phasen, in denen es nicht läuft, tief durchzuatmen und das Vertrauen ins eigene Projekt aufrechtzuerhalten.

Loszu­lassen und zu entspannen, wenn die Post abgeht, braucht intensives Training.

Die Trainingsworkshops von jeweils drei Tagen sind Inspira­ tionsinseln geworden – für die teilnehmenden Unter­ nehmerinnen sowie für Jørgen Smidstrup von unserer Kommunikationsagentur Lower East in Berlin und mich als Lehrer und Trainer. Die KaosPiloten-Studierenden in ­ihrem letzten Ausbildungsjahr unterstützen uns als Business ­Coaches. Das Trainingsprogramm besteht aus 9 Modulen à je 3 T ­ agen, die über ein knappes Jahr verteilt sind.

Von den sechs Teilnehmenden haben fünf den Schritt in die berufliche Selbständigkeit gewagt. Eine Teilnehmerin lässt ihr Lieblingsprojekt schön langsam und berufs­begleitend gedeihen. Auch das kann gut funktionieren. Die Palette

Wo stehst du heute, 3 Monate nach ­Abschluss des Lehrgangs?

Vor einem Haufen neuer Fragen! Mit meinem öffentlichen Auftritt als Selbststän­diger hat das Abenteuer erst richtig ­begonnen.

Ich mache viele neue Erfahrungen mit der aktuellen Aufgabe, Kundinnen und Kunden für mein Angebot zu gewinnen. Wie gehe ich am besten vor? Wen spreche ich an?

Wie bewerbe ich meine Dienstleistungen effektiv? Welcher Stil passt überhaupt zu mir, womit fühle ich mich wohl? Ich bin ­gerade auf einer emotionalen Berg- und Talfahrt: Beflügelt von der eigenen Geschäftsidee und zugleich voller Ungewissheit, ob, wann und wie ich sie zum Fliegen bringe.

Was hast du in NB gelernt, das dir heute hilft?

Zum Beispiel mit unfertigen Geschäfts­ ideen auf die Strasse zu gehen, sie zu ­testen

und in der Praxis weiter zu entwickeln; auf den unternehmerischen “Magne­ tismus” zu vertrauen, d.h., dass mein e ­igenes inneres Feuer für eine Sache anziehend ­ auf meine Umwelt wirkt; an negativen Glaubens­sätzen zu rütteln und mir meine persönlichen Ressourcen immer wieder zu vergegenwärtigen.

Wohin soll die Reise gehen?

Ich habe eine Vision, die mich begeistert: Das Unternehmen der Zukunft setzt auf zufriedene Mitarbeitende. Beratend und mode­­ rierend unterstütze ich es dabei, seine Betriebskultur entsprechend auszu­ gestalten. Mit meiner Erfahrung als Barista und Röster bringe ich den Kaffee kreativ ein, um Organisationsentwicklung greifbar zu machen. Noch zehre ich von Erspartem und bin auf einen Nebenjob angewiesen – meine Reise aber geht klar in Richtung beruf­licher Eigenständigkeit.

Grossgruppen-Workshops geben Von Matti Straub-Fischer

Wie arbeitet man mit Gruppen von 40 bis 1000 Teilnehmenden? Wann lohnen sich solche Workshops und Veranstaltungen? Worauf kommt es bei der Vorbereitung an? Antworten aus dem changels-Alltag.

Kunden fragen uns oft: Was machen Sie eigentlich bei changels noch so alles neben den Coachings und den Führungs- und Teamentwicklungen? Wir organisieren oft Grossgruppen-Workshops und -Konferenzen. Aha, mit ­vielen Fachpersonen und Frontalunterricht? Nein, meistens mit Grossgruppen-Methoden wie Open Space, World Café oder Wisdom Councils. Und das müssen Sie alles organisieren? Ja, wir sorgen für die Vorbereitung, für die passenden Räume, für ein einladendes Ambiente und einen attraktiven Programmrahmen, der möglichst viel Raum für Selbstorganisation und Eigenverantwortung der Teilnehmenden zulässt.

Und dann müssen Sie allen sagen, was es zu tun gibt? Nein, wir machen eine Einführung, stellen die zentrale Leitfrage des Anlasses vor und definieren, was am Schluss der ein, zwei oder drei Tage an Ergebnissen im Raum stehen sollte.

Dann übernehmen die Teilnehmenden selber das Szepter.

Das ist das Schöne und Geniale an Grossgruppen-Workshops: dass die Teilnehmenden selber sagen, was ihnen am Herzen liegt, wo sie mitreden und mitarbeiten wollen und wie sie das tun. Es braucht dazu keine Chefs, keine Manager und auch keine externe Referenten. Methoden wie Open Space schaffen den Rahmen, um Probleme und Herausforderungen in der Organisation über Hierarchiestufen und Bereichsgrenzen hinweg anzusprechen, hinzuschauen, wie es dazu gekommen ist und dann gemeinsam Lösungen zu entwickeln.

Energie In einem Open Space bringen 40 bis 1000 Personen die für sie wichtigen Themen aufs Tapet und erarbeiten in selbst­ organisierten Gruppen Lösungsvorschläge. Diese Arbeitsform stärkt die bereichsübergreifende Zusammenarbeit und bringt oft überraschende Vorschläge für das weitere Vor­ gehen. Und sie setzt bei den Beteiligten viel Energie frei: Wer mit Herzblut an den Fragen arbeitet, die ihm oder ihr wichtig sind, ist später auch bereit, engagiert anzupacken und ein Projekt vorwärts zu bringen. Eine Geschäftsleitung, die dieses Engagement spürt, gibt in der Regel gern grünes Licht.

Grossgruppen-Methoden haben noch andere Vorteile.

Wenn 200 Personen aus einem Unternehmen gleich­zeitig an wichtigen Fragen arbeiten, braucht es Transparenz und gegenseitiges Vertrauen. Jede Teilnehmende darf sich nämlich jederzeit wie ein Schmetterling von einer Arbeitsgruppe zur nächsten bewegen – die Beteiligten werden empowert, das Selbstvertrauen steigt.

Es dauert in der Regel etwa sechs Stunden, bis sich die Teilnehmenden mit dem Prinzip der Selbstorganisation soweit anfreunden, dass sie sich frei zwischen den Gruppen und damit im ganzen Unternehmen bewegen. Vielen steckt die jahrelange Erfahrung in den Knochen, dass sie die I­nitiative erst ergreifen dürfen, wenn die vorgesetzte Person das e ­ rlaubt hat. Doch im Open Space gibt es keinen Dienstweg. Für viele ist es deshalb neu, sich von der eigenen Lust am Lernen steuern lassen zu dürfen und dort beizutragen, wo es sie am meisten hinzieht.

die umsichtig und mutig agieren, lösungsorientiert mit Kunden umgehen, Risiken abschätzen und im ­ ­ Interesse des ­ gesamten Unternehmens Knacknüsse anpacken, dann müssen sie diese Muskeln wieder trainieren. Gross­ gruppen-Methoden wie Open Space oder World Café sind gute Möglichkeiten dafür.

Wir changels organisieren und moderieren seit über 15 Jahren solche Grossgruppen-Workshops. Die Methoden ­ funktionieren in traditionellen und innovativen Firmenkulturen, sie eignen sich für komplexe Freiwilligenorganisationen oder auch zur Entwicklung einer gemeinsamen Strategie von fast hundert Ämtern und Instituten in der Bundesverwaltung.

Um noch ganzheitlichere Lösungen zu finden, arbeiten wir seit drei Jahren mit der Methode des Wisdom Councils, das seine Wurzeln in der Kultur der nordamerikanischen Natives hat. Das Council hat einen hochstrukturierten Ablauf und bezieht acht Perspektiven ein. In ein bis zwei Tagen können Organisationen herausfinden, was aktuell die gewichtigsten Fragen im Betrieb sind und d ­ iese dann konkret bearbeiten. Im Council wird jede Stimme angehört.

Die kreuzen sich – immer wieder Von Martina Straub*

Auf der Suche nach spannenden Kundenprojekten machte Matti Straub-Fischer 2012 einen Aufruf und Christina Müller und Susi Born von der Designgut meldeten sich. Die KaosPiloten erarbeiteten als ­Prüfung einen Businessplan für die Designmesse in Winterthur – der Beginn einer Zusammenarbeit.

Dreimal hatte der Verein Designgut die Messe erfolgreich durchgeführt und mit viel Herzblut und ehrenamtlicher Arbeit unglaublich viel erreicht – trotzdem war dem ganze Team klar: So kann es nicht weitergehen. Die Designgut wollte in Zukunft auch nach innen nachhaltig wirken, zum Beispiel im Umgang mit den menschlichen Ressourcen, so wie es die Messe von ihren Ausstellerinnen und Ausstellern erwartet. Das Angebot der KaosPiloten Schule, von Studierenden einen Businessplan entwickeln zu lassen, kam daher wie ein Geschenk des Universums.

Businessplan mit Team SUI1 Vier KaosPiloten des Teams SUI1 nahmen sich begeistert des Projekts an: eine Messe für nachhaltiges Design, eine Gruppierung, die an die Kreativszene in der Schweiz glaubt und diese unterstützt indem sie kleine, feine Labels einem breiten Publikum bekannt macht. Die Designgut wurde getragen von fünf engagierten Frauen. Der Weg der Kaos­ Piloten und der Designgut kreuzte sich zum ersten Mal. Das Businessplanprojekt brachte vieles ans Licht – ungenutztes Potential und auch mögliche Schwachstellen. Die KaosPiloten hielten den Finger auf wunde Punkte, brachten blinde Flecken zur Sprache und boten mit guten Ideen Hand für Lösungen. Ihre vielleicht wichtigste Botschaft war jedoch: Designgut ist ein unglaublich tolles Projekt, ein Leuchtturm für viele kleine Designerinnen und Designer – das Team kann stolz sein auf das Erreichten und auf die Vision, die es trägt. Und weiter: Die Powerfrauen sollen ihre falsche Bescheidenheiten getrost ablegen.

Unterstützung von Team SUI2 Der Abschluss des ersten Projekts war gleichzeitig der Start für das nächste. Es wurde klar, dass das Design-

gut-Team während der Messe viel mehr Unterstützung braucht. Gleichzeitig erkannten die KaosPiloten, dass die Messe eine super Möglichkeit für sie bietet, während drei Tagen hinter die Kulissen eines Grossanlasses zu schauen und zu lernen, was es alles braucht, um ihn durchzuführen.

Zudem wimmelt es an der Designmesse von spannenden Menschen – so macht Netzwerken Spass.

Sie betreuten das Aussteller-Café im Gewerbe­ museum.

Mit konkreten Projekt und Produkten liessen sie ihre Ausbildung für Interessierte fassbarer und handfester ­werden. Und als Teil des Rahmenprogramms organisierte ein KaosPilot einen “PechaKucha 20*20“-Abend (Interessierte erzählen ihre Geschichte in 20 Slides/Folien à je 20 ­Sekunden) zum Thema DesignDialoges.

Ende Oktober 2013 reiste das gesamte Team SUI2 ­inklusiv den Team Leaders nach Winterthur und unterstützte die Designgut-Crew in der strengsten Zeit des Jahres mit vereinten Kräften. Die Messetage gingen auch an den KaosPiloten nicht spurlos vorüber: Sie repräsentierten die KaosPiloten Schule an einem Messestand, verkauften sich das erste Mal selber als KaosPilotinnen und -piloten, und gleichzeitig standen sie fast pausenlos im Einsatz für das Organisationsteam. Das Designgut-Team wie auch die Aussteller schätzen den frischen Wind der KaosPiloten, ihr Engagement und ihre Hilfsbereitschaft.

Zusammanarbeit geht weiter Christina Müller, die Initiantin der Designgut, ist überzeugt: Zwischen der Designmesse in Winterthur und den Kaos­ Piloten werden sich auch in Zukunft Zusammen­arbeiten ­ergeben – dank vieler Ideen von beiden Seiten. Den Schritt, im November 2012 zum Telefon zu greifen und die Kaos­ Piloten anzurufen, beschreibt sie als “Boost, als Wechsel von analogem Modem zu ADSL“. Und klar ist ihr auch geworden: Gute und spannende Projekt werden noch ­ ­besser und inspirierender, wenn mehr Menschen mit Herzblut dahinter stehen.

Unzählige Synergien Auch 2014 klangen die Erkenntnisse des Businessplans beim Designgut-Team noch nach: Man fand den Mut, ­Ideen, die schon lange in der Luft hingen, umzusetzen. So eröffnete die Messe 2014 einen zweiten Standort. Natürlich konnte das neu zusammengesetzte Kernteam auf die Mitarbeit dreier KaosPiloten während der Messe zählen.

Und an einem Messestand konnten sich die Besucher­innen und Besucher über die KaosPiloten Schule informieren.

Gleichzeitig konzipierten KaosPiloten des Team SUI1 ein Weiterbildungsangebot für die Ausstellerinnen und Aus­ steller. Das Motto: Projektmanagement mit Pfiff, Inspiration und Herzblut oder der unkonventionelle Weg zu ­einer Businessanalyse, der Taten folgen! Während zweier Halb­ tage konnten vier KaosPiloten im Abschlussjahr die ­gelernten Tools gleich eins zu eins anwenden und weitergeben.

Und auch in diesem Herbst, als die Designgut zum sechsten Mal ihre Türen öffnete, waren die KaosPiloten vor Ort.

Rund 80 Ausstellerinnen und Aussteller präsentieren Mode, Schmuck, Keramik, Accessoires und Möbel. Sie glaubt daran, dass sich bewusstes und nachhaltiges Konsum­ verhalten immer mehr durchsetzen wird. Bei jungen Schweizer Design-Labels ist Nachhaltigkeit eine Selbstverständlichkeit und die lokale Produktion und der schonende Umgang mit Ressourcen sind aktueller denn je.

Eine Karte mit den

inspirierendsten Orten in Bern Von Trix Angst

Zum zweiten Mal haben im Oktober die Berner Inspirationstage stattgefunden. Es wurde die Basis gelegt für eine Stadtkarte mit den inspirierendsten Orten und Adressen in Bern.

In Bern gibt es viele Unternehmen, die innovative ­Produkte und Dienstleistungen anbieten, Restaurants und Bars, die mit immer neuen Kreationen die Sinne inspirieren und Künstlerinnen und Changemaker, die spannende Projekte umsetzen. Doch es ist nicht einfach, all die spannenden Orte zu finden, wenn man neu in die Stadt zieht.

Das wollen wir ändern! Wir – das sind die KaosPiloten, changels, Partnerorganisationen und Interessierte. Wir sind der Meinung: Die Berner Innovationskraft erfährt noch nicht die Aufmerksamkeit, die sie verdient. Deshalb haben sich am 23. Oktober 2015 im Innovationsdorf Bern mehr als 30 Personen getroffen, um gemeinsam eine Inspira­ tionskarte der Stadt zu erschaffen.

Am Morgen schwärmten kleine Gruppen in unterschied­ liche Quartiere aus. Sie spürten coole Orte auf, liessen sich treiben, sprachen Leute an und fragten sie nach ihren Lieblingsplätzen und verborgenen Schätzen. Nach dem Mittag brachten sie viel Inspiration und Inspirierendes ins Innovationsdorf zurück.

Nun ging es ans Sichten und Verdichten. Rund 50 inspirierende Plätze, Restaurants, Bars und Projekte schafften es schliesslich auf die Karte. In den nächsten Wochen wird die Papierversion der Inspirationskarte in Zusammen­ arbeit mit der Projektpartnerin Stämpfli Druck entstehen.

Sie wird über die KaosPiloten, changels und einige der ­inspirierenden Orte zu beziehen sein.

Doch damit nicht genug: Es haben sich sechs Arbeits­ gruppen formiert, die mit dem Material, das im Verlauf des Tages zusammenkam, weiterarbeiten wollen. Sie haben bereits ziemlich konkrete Vorstellungen, was sie produ­ zieren wollen.

• E ine Map App mit Filterfunktion – die digitale Version der Karte, immer à jour.

• Ein Pocket Guide mit den inspirierendsten Tipps und ­einer kleinen Karte im Anhang.

• First Thursday: Am ersten Donnerstag jedes Monats öffnen ein paar der inspirierenden Orte und Organisationen abends die Türen und können besucht werden.

• Netzwerk der inspirierenden Orte: Sie lernen sich gegen­ seitig kennen und erweitern ihr eigenes Netzwerk.

• Jumping castle: Die Stadt Bern als 3D-Hüpfburg.

• Sportplattform: Online Drehscheibe zum Suchen und Finden von Orten, wo (kostenlos) Sport getrieben werden kann, und von Menschen, die auch grad Lust auf eine sportliche Aktivität haben.

Innovationsdorf Choba ­Choba Die Schokolade-Revolution in Bern Im Oktober wurde im Innovationsdorf Bern die Schoko­ lade-Revolution lanciert: das Start-up Choba ­Choba produ­ziert nachhaltige Qualitätsschokolade und betei­ ligt die ­Kakaobauern direkt an der Firma.

Der Schweizer Christoph Inauen und der Franzose Eric Garnier haben lange in der Schokoladebranche gearbeitet und sind Experten in Sachen Fairtrade. Nun haben sie eine eigene Schokoladefirma gegründet: Choba Choba. Das ­ Aussergewöhnliche daran: Beim Startup mit Sitz im Innovationsdorf Bern sind die Kakaobauern aus Peru Mitinhaber und an den Entscheidungsprozessen im Unternehmen beteiligt. Sie profitieren also direkt vom Erfolg des Endprodukts. Und sie bestimmen den Preis, den Choba Choba für den Kakao bezahlt. Diese kollaborative Form ist weltweit einmalig in der Schokoladebranche. Choba Choba heisst in Quechua denn auch so viel wie “Du hilfst mir, ich helfe dir“.

“Choba Choba steht für eine neue Schokoladenwelt, bei der wir Kakaobauern im Zentrum stehen“, sagt Oswaldo del Castillo Vasquez, einer der beteiligten Kakaobauern.

“Wir sind Miteigentümer der Schokoladenmarke und nicht nur Rohstofflieferanten. Wir haben somit ein Mitspracherecht und Zugang zu einem grösseren Anteil am Schoko­ ladenbusiness. Vor allem aber kriegen wir Respekt und Anerkennung für unsere harte Arbeit.“ Choba Choba bezieht seine Kakaobohnen ausschliesslich von den beteiligten Bauernfamilien in Peru. Das Rohprodukt wird in die Schweiz transportiert und vom Schokolade­ hersteller Felchlin in ein exklusives Endprodukt verwandelt.

Alle zwei Monate entsteht so eine neue Produktion: drei verschiedene, in limitierter Anzahl erhältliche Tafeln d ­ unkler Schokolade. Sie werden zusammen mit Informa­tionen zur Bauernfamilie, die den Kakao produzierte, geliefert. Die Choba-Choba-Box kann einzeln oder im Abonnement (sechs Mal pro Jahr) bestellt werden. “Wir wollen, dass der Kauf unserer Schokolade die gleichen Gefühle weckt, wie wenn der Käufer beim Bauern des Vertrauens gleich um die Ecke sein Gemüse besorgt“, sagt Christoph Inauen.

Neben der Umsetzung von Websites, Online-Shops und individuellen Online-Plattformen rutschte ich parallel mehr und mehr in Richtung IT-Consulting und Coaching. In der von Fachbegriffen, IT-Problemen und ständig wechselnden Technologien überschwemmten digitalen Welt kamen für mich verschiedene Dinge auf der menschlichen ­Ebene zu kurz. Deshalb fördere ich in meinen Projekten immer einen lösungsorientierten, freundschaftlichen Ideenaustausch – die Zusammenarbeit von Menschen als Grundlage zum ­Erfolg. Digitale Tools sind die modernen Arbeits­mittel für jedes Business, aber der Mensch dahinter wird zunehmend wichtiger. So bildete sich zunehmend ein grosses Netzwerk aus Kundinnenen und Partnern, die nicht nur gewinnorientiert arbeiten, sondern wirklich sinnvolle ­Lösungen anbieten.

Seit Anfang Juni 2015 bin ich nun im Innovationsdorf Bern und bin einfach begeistert. leader

So you want to be a great leader, a real KaosPilot*) Well, let me ask you first: What does that mean for you?

In this world that is volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, you want to navigate through chaos, or for consistent marketing purposes, through Kaos. In a world, where change is the new norm, you want to inspire others. And you want to be different, you want to make a sustainable difference, you want to be an entrepreneur, think out of the box, walk the extra mile. But enough bullshit bingo. You want to cut through the crap, build on your contribution to society, build a legacy. Oops, sorry, I promised you no more bullshit lingo.

Frank Zappa once said, to talk about music, is like to dance about architecture. How can you talk about what you could learn, how you could develop, more generally, how s­ tudents become KaosPilots. How learning takes place, deep learning. And I mean DEEP. Learning about your patterns, your prejudices, your blind spots. Maybe you thought you don‘t have any. That you are reflective, conscious, and especially, that you thought you were open, and flexible.

And then you find yourself sitting with your class mates in a circle, expecting the facilitator (you think of him as teacher) to finally give you the answers, to give you the ultimate tools (the KaosPilot leatherman or any other magical stick).

Whenever your facilitator mentions a book or an author, you quickly write it down, you will order that via Amazon (even though you do not like them but they deliver fast

and you might need that book tomorrow), because there will be the right answers, in these books there will be the missing links that you desperately need between you now and your ­successful career as a founder, owner, and leader of a socially responsible and spiritually sound start-up that also ­makes loads of money and changes the world. So you dream on, you are taught to dream, and yet, there is some­ thing out there that is reality, a bit grey, a bit …. and, well ….. (pun intended) ….. realistic.

Reality right now is, you sit in a circle, expecting answers, and your facilitator does not do anything. He does not give you the answers, he does not present a model, he is just sitting there. First, you think he is waiting, then you start to become uncomfortable, then you become angry. The facili­tator just looks and asks: “What is happening?” Well, nothing is happening, you think angrily. As the teacher is not doing anything, how could anything happen? You watch your colleagues, some are scribbling, others are joining in with you in your anger. Why is this guy not doing anything?

We have experienced already some unpleasant situations in our education and now this trainer is not doing anything, just looking, and asking what is happening?

Oh my lord, your anger is building up. And you wanted to learn tools, be spiritual (no anger, only love and rainbows, is it not?), you paid for this school, dear money, and now?

Nothing is happening.

No, wait! You start to notice something.

A lot is happening. Your thoughts race, your blood ­pressure rises, you feel your anger, you feel your insecurity, you ­observe your patterns. You notice how you became a victim of this situation, how you saw the teacher as a perpetrator, you see how you made yourself a victim. And nobody else.

Not the school, not the teacher, not your ­colleagues, not the situation. But you.

For the potential KaosPilot You have seen the great website of the KaosPilots, you have seen the great pictures, people with happy faces, jumping energetically. You may have been to the KaosDays, have talked to enthusiastic KaosPilots. You are inspired, overwhelmed, aaahh, this feels good. You want to apply, you want to be part of this community. Finally, you have found what you were looking for in your life. Finally, an education that is really different, inspirational, inspiring, if you want, even spiritual. Here, you have arrived. You will make your mark. Your life had become became routine, maybe you had hit rock bottom, or at least it looked like a dead-end street. You needed a change, maybe, no surely, here you will find what you have always been looking for.

Well, is that too good to be true? Are you prepared to be disappointed, to be disillusioned?

For the KaosPilot after the second year Well, your enthusiasm wore off a bit. After some loving months, everything new, with a great international crowd, they are not so great, maybe (honeymoon is over, hey?), the magic is gone. Or is it still there, just looks different?

Maybe only your projections, your unrealistic hopes are gone. The tools, the methods you hoped would change everything are just tools, you cannot ignore gravity, your feelings of anger and frustration remind you that you are human, a mortal (and yet very alive) being. The medicine wheels, the Council Guide Training is not giving you all the answers, it is not THE truth, it is ONE way to look at the world, to look at yourself. The wisdom it reveals is only ONE wisdom. Tools and techniques are only tools and techniques. Even less: “Without the right attitude, a technique is not even a decent technique.” (Steve de Shazer).

You have plans to change the world, you might do some spirit-bio-eco-friendly-sustainable-something, you might sing, drum, write or (insert appropriate verb) to heal the world, you might help others (do they need help or do you need help?), you may start some community initiatives, you may be inspired to do it all. Well, whatever you do, WHY do you want to do it? Do you really want to do it? Have you received open and honest feedback? Are you ready for it?

For the potential KaosPilot graduate Well, congratulations! You made it. Now, these three years are in the past. You have experienced a lot, you tried out things, risked a bit. Where are you now? Well, one journey is over, and the next begins. Life is out there, ready for you to grab it. You are on your own. Of course, you have your buddies, your network, the KaosPilot school will be there, but essentially, you are “grown up and alone” (­Peter ­Turrini).

You are asked to lead your life, to live your life, you are

asked to make money, to support yourself and your family.

What is different now? Nothing? Something? Every­thing?

Only everything, I guess. There is a Zen story, illu­strating the satori or enlightenment: Before the enlighten­ment: cut wood and carry water. After the enlightenment: cut wood and carry water. How is it for you now? All, or most of your plans to do this and that project with others, are gone.

Now, you have to prove that your projects hold water. That what you do makes sense, is sustainable (no bullshit!), and may have a business rationale.

You are still human, yes, you have grown, you have ­matured. You may be better equipped to find YOUR place in this world. You may be better equipped to find answers to your questions. You may even be better equipped to find the right questions for you. Now you know, there are no instant answers, no right answers. All you have learned has prepared you to reflect and to respond, rather than act and react. And don’t forget: you still cut wood and carry water!

Creating

the map while exploring the unknown territory

Take a moment to ask yourself: When was the last time I felt overwhelmed? What led to that feeling?

And what did I do about it? Chances are high, that there are multiple scenarios coming to mind and that you can recall at least one situation or event in the near past.

Being a KaosPilot most likely helps in manoeuvring through uncertain times. However, uncertainty is part of the human experience and there is immense beauty in it. Instead of ­reacting, we can decide to look at phases of transition, fluctuation, order and chaos, times of orientation and change as an invitation to reflect, make course corrections along the way and choose how we want to respond to life. But how can we make sense of our experiences in an ever ­changing world? How can we make good decisions, especially in times of change? Ultimately, how can we live a good life?

Moreover, sensemaking is not only rooted in the ­individual sphere, but offers profound insights when applied to organi­ zational studies. Organizational psychologist Karl E. Weick is one of the pioneers exploring how individuals and organizations make sense out of their environments.

Instead of assuming that organizations are built upon a set of static structures that need to be changed, Weick introduces the impermanent organization and describes the constant flux between static structures and changing environments in organizations. Metaphorically speaking, organizations move between smoke and crystal, between impermanence and discontinuity on the one hand and fiction of permanence and continuity on the other. This implies that we need to deal with ongoing flows of experiences which

It took us 10 sentences, dear reader, to get to some of philo­sophy’s most important questions. In case you w ­ onder where this is leading to, we’re about to enter the rabbit hole and explore the world of sensemaking together.

To be able to act, the organization’s knowledge must be both textualized and voiced by a person. The ability to see, depict and predict the rise and fall of patterns to freeze a segment of an ongoing flow and learn how to reproduce this pattern becomes vital to shift from organization to mindful organizing.

Again, sensemaking raises the question of how indivi­duals and groups construct what is sensible as well as how to structure the unknown to act on it in a life-giving way. It is an adaptive way of leadership that calls for creative nego­ tiation, open dialogue and discovering new temporarily agreed upon truths together, again and again. Like Albert Einstein said, no problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. New ways of thinking are required on many levels, as well as creating new temporary and evolving maps that help to manoeuvre in the unknown.

Visual Sensemaking For the past several decades, actual physical maps have been key to understanding one’s location and which way to go, at least in a geological sense. Even though a map is n ­ ever the territory, its abstract visual form helps ­manoeuvring through it.

Making sense of sensemaking Assuming that everyone was, is and will face challenges and was, is and will be impacted by them, it is needed to find good ways to face those situations, both individu­ally and collectively. Sensemaking offers a framework that could help develop more effective ways to cope with a­ dapting to the challenges of a multi-faceted and ever changing world that calls for new responses. Like epistemology, the study of knowledge, sensemaking asks “how do we know what we know?“ yet focusses on applied knowledge, the act of social construction, the process of generating sensibility and comprehension.

But what does that mean, really? Looking at the word sensemaking provides important clues to its underlying concept. Combining the words “sense” and “making” is referring to both a sensual and an active dimension. Sensemaking is the act of making sense while being informed through more senses than the brain mind. It is a holistic approach that invites the mystic dimension and implies the creative power of humankind. Rather than assuming the world and its inhabitants are disconnected units that act according to their individual needs, the concept of sensemaking is deeply rooted in the assumption that all beings are participants of a living universe and co-creators of an ever changing world.

In a similar way to how a geological map is created, it is possible to visually map out (change) processes. There are many names for visual practitioners who create actual maps, large scale pictures, visual protocols and graphic repre­sentations of organizational territories and processes.

Structuring information visually to make sense out of ­complex matters has many benefits. Just to name a few, combining pictures, icons, shapes, colours and text activates both brain hemispheres. Using more senses to capture infor­mation including our spatial sense helps to stay focused, structure and remember the given information.

As well, large scale graphics enhance contribution during meetings and group processes because it triggers a ­basic ­neuronal r­ eward system by capturing the participants’ points of views. When mental maps are being turned into visual maps, visualization and sensemaking go hand in hand.

issues. Most of the time, we do it live and either work ­together with a moderator, speaker or facilitator and are focussing on the visualization part (“graphic recording“) or lead the process while visualizing key concepts at the same time (“graphic facilitation“).

You may have guessed it already: I’m using “us“ because I’m one of these people. During my last year at Kaos­ Pilots Switzerland, I was lucky to do an internship at The Grove Consultants International in San Francisco and learn from one of the most experienced visual practitioners in the field, David Sibbet, while being part of The Grove’s Sensemaking Initiative. To sum three amazing months up: it had to do with making sense out of sensemaking while visua­lizing the process. It was about entering the world of graphic ­recording and facilitation on a deeper level. It was as meta and creative and brain bending as it sounds, and a very rich learning ground. Last but not least, sensemaking is a core leadership skill for oneself and others.

Sensemaking as a leadership skill In the context of leadership and organizational studies both sensemaking and graphic recording/facilitation gain more popularity. Even the MIT Leadership Center presents sensemaking as one of four key leadership skills next to rela­ ting to others, co-creating a compelling vision of the ­future together and inventing new ways of working ­together to implement the vision. All of these capabilities are needed to create long lasting success and together they form MIT’s leadership framework.

Each person’s individual change signature and their ­ability to respond in challenging situations will determine how well these skills are developed and can be used during times of transition. To move beyond individual blind spots

and create a broader and more complex skill portfolio, it is vital to collaborate, reflect and give each other feedback.

Effective sensemaking is based on three different factors.

First of all it is vital to explore the wider system and work with different sources of data to create as much complexity as possible, including opinions from partners, collaborators or employees. Paying attention to the nuances rather than falling back on simplifications and stereotypes is key at this stage of the process.

Creating a map of that system is the second step to effective sensemaking. This process evokes a set of questions, above all “what is the appropriate map in this case“? ­Using an existing map can give hints and help in moving in one direction, yet it can, as well, help in ignoring our own blind spots effectively, create cognitive shortcuts that lead to overgeneralization or even become a self-fulfilling pro­phecy through the lens we’re using to see a certain system. At this stage checking assumptions of all parties involved to avoid further blind spots becomes important. Everyone’s contribution is necessary to create the biggest picture and the most heightened awareness of possible traps during the process. Shaping a new framework that fits the new system is essential and includes finding a diverse potpourri of metaphors, pictures and stories that work in the new context.

Finally, it is needed to act in the system to test out and stretch its boundaries. Rapid prototyping would be one way to find out whether a new approach works or if a course-correction is needed. Through observation, feedback loops, learning cycles, adaptions and new tests action­­ ­ -based learning becomes embodied. The new ­knowledge can be activated through more senses than the brain and ­responded to more intuitively.

This is the core of sensemaking in regard to our senses and the information they provide us with. As well, it is the core of what I believe to be one of the most important frameworks that can foster our response-ability as humankind, our collective ability to respond rather than react in times of transition: “In a world that is growing ‘smaller‘ but ever more ­complex, where unpredictable events and shifting political, ­economic, environmental and social conditions challenge us at every turn, we all need to make better sense of what is going on.

We should all explore the wider system, create maps that are plausible representations of what is happening, and act in the system to improve our understanding of reality. We will never capture it all, and never know how close we are.

The best we can do is to make sensemaking a core individual, team, and organizational capability so that we can break through our fears of the unknown and lead in the face of complexity and uncertainty.“ Deborah Ancona

Moving from Pyramids

to Circles

The fourth Inspiration Conference “Moving from Pyramids to Circles” was held on Schweibenalp, Switzerland from April 22nd to 26th 2015. 14 like minded people and entre­ preneurs explored the dynamics and restrictions of ­hierarchical organizations. They came to an understanding that those Pyramids no longer serve the challenges and needs that organizations find themselves in these days.

In ­order to create sustainable businesses, they set off to ­explore a­ ncient ways of building communities as a circle.

They were guided in that process by WhiteEagle Woman from the orga­nization DanceHammers ­­( ­­w ww.dance­ hammers.com) in New M ­ exico, USA. She is a Keeper of the Earth Wisdom Teachings of the Delicate Lodge, teachings that build upon protocols of how to move as group as circle.

The participants explored the role of money in past and present business structures. And they discussed how the role and perception of money needs to change in order to “succeed” in the future business world.

I understood that exempting myself from ­“showing up“ by not sharing my voice, my ideas and con­ cerns is also a way of exiting the circle and creating a hierarchal structure – as I diminish my own value. My appre­ ciation could grow for the diversity of all the people and how everyone’s perspective is needed in contributing to the whole.

I actually changed in such essential ways during the Conference that I needed a new name before leaving the space, thus my medicine name is Weaving Rivers. This was my experience and these are my words. Aho! In my work and life at Schweibenalp I have explored this aspect and after almost three and a half years of living in an intentional community, I felt the need to exchange with others that are working, experimenting or living in a commu­nitarian way.In all communities I have encountered one of the main topics is the organization of the ­community.

The Cenference also encompasses the whole spectrum of possible organizational setups and has a vision of a circlebased organizational model.. We had the chance to interact on the benefits and ­challenges of this mode of human ­social engineering.

Personally, I have found in the conference like-minded ­people that were open to honest exchange. We also lived for a few days the vision of a circle-based structure which ignited in me the fire to follow the promise of healing social environments through the Wisdom of the Medicine Wheel applied in modern contexts.

Das Council Guide Training (CGT) basiert auf Lehren aus der Tradi­tion amerikanischer Ureinwohner. Es ist Bestandteil des Curriculums der KaosPiloten Schule. Und es steht auch ­allen anderen Menschen offen. Ein Erfahrungsbericht von Evelyne Suter.

Ich bin seit fast zehn Jahren selbständig tätige Anwältin.

Neben rechtlicher Fachkompetenz brauche ich dabei auch ein Gespür für Menschen und sinnvolle Instrumente der Entscheidungsfindung und Begleitung meiner Klienten und anderer Gesprächspartnerinnen. Als ich mir vor drei ­Jahren Gedanken über meine Weiterentwicklung machte, war deshalb klar, dass ich statt einer weiteren fachlichen Weiter­bildung etwas machen wollte, was mich persönlich in diesen Bereichen weiterbringen würde.

Im Council Guide Training werden der Council-Prozess als Entscheidungsinstrument sowie weitere Führungs- und Kommunikationstools für das Assessment von Situationen und für Strategie- und Entscheidungsfindung vermittelt.

Also genau das, was ich an Soft Skills in mir weiterent­ wickeln wollte. Ausschlaggebend für meine Entscheidung für CGT war aber etwas anderes: Das Gefühl, dass es über die wissen­schaftlich-nüchterne Betrachtung der Welt h ­ inaus eine Dimension gibt, die wir oft nicht so recht ­ erklären ­können, aber alle schon erlebt haben. Wir nennen sie Intui­ tion, emotionale Intelligenz, ganzheitliches Denken o.ä.

Prozess leitet. Dabei ist CGT aber kein Managerseminar, das sich bloss einen Anstrich von Spiritualität oder Ganzheitlichkeit geben will. Echte Entschleunigung und digitale Enthaltsamkeit, Zeit für Selbstreflexion werden gefördert und gefordert. Unterrichtet wird nicht im Business Meeting Raum mit Powerpoint-Präsentation, sondern wenn immer möglich draussen in der Natur. Etwas plakativ beschrieben: Persönlichkeitstraining in Pfadilager-Atmosphäre.

Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass das Training eine PlauschAuszeit ist. Ganz im Gegenteil, das CGT waren in vielerlei Hinsicht zwei intensive Jahre: Der Rhythmus mit vier so genannten Ceremonies – einwöchigen “Retraiten” – pro Jahr bedeutet ein hohes zeitliches Engagement. Und ­z wischen den Ceremonies geht das Training weiter, mit konkreten Aufgaben zur Anwendung im eigenen Leben und mit ­einem regelmässigen Austausch in kleineren Lern­gruppen.

Die Wheels und Tools soll sich jede und jeder selber verinner­ lichen, nicht auswendig lernen, sondern sich zu eigen m ­ ­ achen. Das Training wird so Teil des gelebten ­Alltags, dazu braucht es ein tägliches Commitment. G ­ enau diese vertiefte, kontinuierliche Auseinandersetzung im ­eigenen Leben ermöglicht aber auch einen nachhaltigen Lern- und Veränderungsprozess.

Als ich WhiteEagle Woman zum ersten Mal über die ­Delicate Lodge Teachings sprechen hörte, wusste ich, dass ich damit lernen würde, mich bewusst in dieser ­Dimension zu bewegen. Mein Bauch sagte sofort Ja, mein Kopf ­brauchte noch Antworten auf Fragen wie: Kannst du so oft vom Büro weg sein? Das kannst du dir finanziell gar nicht leisten! Solltest du nicht lieber einen anerkannten Fach­anwaltskurs ­absolvieren? Und das waren nicht etwa Stimmen aus meinem Umfeld, das war allein meine innere Diskussions­gruppe!

In meinem CGT wurde ich mit mir selbst konfrontiert, mit meinen Mustern und Glaubenssätzen. Auch das braucht eine Investition an persönlicher Energie, denn es scheint zunächst bequemer zu sein, sich mit seinen alten ­Zöpfen einfach zu arrangieren – man hat ja bis anhin auch nicht schlecht gelebt damit. Wenn man sich aber auf den ­Prozess wirklich einlässt, lohnt sich diese Mühe: Ich habe gelernt, das Leben um mich herum und mich selbst achtsamer wahrzunehmen und einzuordnen; nicht mehr in absoluten Schubladen wie gut/schlecht zu kategorisieren, sondern mich von der Frage leiten zu lassen: Was braucht es in ­einer konkreten Situation?

Es war ein erster Vorgeschmack auf das Lernfeld im CGT: Die verschiedenen inneren Stimmen ohne (Vor-)Urteil ­anhören, abwägen, welche aus Ängsten oder einschränkenden Glaubenssätzen sprechen, und am Ende eine Entscheidung treffen, die aus meiner Mitte kommt. Denn bevor ich einem Klienten oder einer Gruppe helfen kann, konstruktive und nachhaltige Entscheidungen zu treffen, muss ich zuerst meine innere Diskussionsgruppe ebenso anleiten können. Ich muss also zuerst bei mir selber limitierende Glaubenssätze erkennen und lernen, wie ich sie aufbreche. Deshalb beinhaltet CGT beides: die Arbeit mit und an sich selber ebenso wie die Entscheidungsfindung in der Gruppe.

Und ich habe gelernt, Verhaltensmuster und ihre ­Auslöser zu erkennen – in mir selbst und in meinem Umfeld. So konnte ich mich von einigen Glaubenssätzen und “ ­ Gewohnheiten“ befreien, die mich lange unbewusst b ­ egleitet und behindert hatten. Seither kann ich in meinem ­ Beruf Klienten und Gegen­ parteien besser einschätzen. Was wollen sie wirklich? Was steckt hinter ihrem vielleicht kontra­produktiv anmutenden Verhalten? Dadurch öffnen sich oftmals Lösungs­wege, die bei einer rein rechtlichen Betrachtungs­ weise gar nicht auf dem Radar auftauchen. Ich sehe ein viel breiteres Spektrum von möglichen ­Optionen als früher.

Das erlaubt mir, flexibler auf jede Situation – sei es beruflich oder privat – einzugehen.

Fundament und Rahmen des CGT sind die Delicate Lodge Teachings, Lehren aus der Tradition amerikanischer Ureinwohner. Sie werden in ihrer überlieferten Struktur der so ­genannten Wheels vermittelt. Ein Wheel kann man als K ­ arte verstehen, die einem den Weg durch einen ­bestimmten

Alles in allem navigiere ich heute bewusster, selbst­ bestimmter und dadurch freier, entspannter und mit einem grösseren Gefühl der Sinnhaftigkeit und so auch mit einer klareren Linie durch mein Leben. Ich reagiere nicht auf das Leben, ich gestalte es.

Wenn man KaosPilot sein will, muss man bereit sein, die Komfort-Zone zu verlassen. Die ersten 10 ­“Schweizer“ KaosPilotinnen und KaosPiloten haben ihr Diplom in der Tasche und sind in die Welt hinausgezogen. Was ­arbeiten sie heute, und wie blicken sie auf die drei Studienjahre zurück?

Was hat dich zu den KaosPiloten Schweiz gebracht?

Zufall und gutes Timing. Ich habe Matti Straub-Fischer kennen­ gelernt und war von seinem selbstbestimmten ­Leben beeindruckt. Ich war damals sehr fremdgesteuert, vor lauter “müssen“ wusste ich gar nicht mehr, was ich eigentlich wollte. Als dann die KaosPiloten Schule in die Schweiz kam, sah ich eine Chance, etwas bei mir zu ­ändern.

Deine Erinnerung an den ersten Tag? Oh my god! Will ich das wirklich?!

Was kannst du heute, was du vor der Ausbildung nicht konntest?

Prozess-Beratung: Einzelpersonen und Gruppen durch Veränderungsprozesse begleiten. Prozesse designen, ­planen, vorbereiten, durchführen, reflektieren und ­ abschliessen.

Durch die Ausbildung habe ich mich selber sehr gut ­kennen gelernt und meinen inneren Piloten gestärkt. Das ­erlaubt mir heute, auf eine Art und Weise mit Menschen zu ­arbeiten, wie ich es vorher nicht gekonnt hätte.

Was hat dich bewogen, weiter zu machen, wenn du die Schule schmeissen wolltest?

Ich wusste, dass ich am richtigen Ort war, um meine Komfortzone zu verlassen und an meinen blinden Flecken zu arbeiten.

Wie hat dich die Ausbildung zum KaosPiloten verändert?

Früher war ich angepasst und erfolgreich. Heute bin ich einzigartig und glücklich!

Was hat dich zu den KaosPiloten Schweiz gebracht?

In gewissem Sinne war es ein Plakat. Viel wichtiger aber die darauffolgende Neugier und wissen zu wollen, was ­dahinter steckt. Falls ich eine rationale Liste an pro und ­kontra gemacht hätte, wäre ich nie zu den KaosPiloten. Es war vielmehr eine Intuition, ein Drang, ich musste ­einfach in diese Ausbildung. Rückblickend war es eine meiner ­besten Entscheidungen!

Was kannst du heute, was du vor der Ausbildung nicht konntest?

Das Entscheidende, vielleicht abstrakt Klingende, ist ­folgendes: Ich kann jetzt mein Leben so gestalten, wie ich das will. Hätte ich das vorher nicht auch schon gekonnt?

Sicher, und ich habe es auch getan – irgendwie. Jetzt tue ich es nicht mehr irgendwie, jetzt tue ich es bewusst. Ich weiss, dass ich alles, was ich dazu brauche, bereits habe und kann. Ich weiss meinen Spürsinn zu nutzen, um die Trüffeln meiner Träume auch tatsächlich auszugraben – und ich lerne dies in, mit und für Organisationen zu tun.

Für wen ist diese Ausbildung (nicht) geeignet?

Ich glaube, es muss einem wirklich ernst sein mit der Veränderung – der Veränderung in sich selbst und in der Welt.

Die Ausbildung ist nicht so “streng“ wie andere Ausbil­ dungen, man muss nicht so viel wie andernorts. Dafür ist sie eine Lebensschule, denn theoretisch ist deine gesamte Lebensführung Teil und Ziel des Curriculums. Das muss man wollen – ansonsten verpasst man das Beste oder es nervt gewaltig. Also: An dieser Schule sind die Leute ­richtig, die sich ihr eigenes Leben kreieren wollen.

Woran arbeitest du?

Prozesse und Ideen deutlich zu machen, indem ich sie aufzeichne. Das kann von Konferenzen über Gruppenprozesse und Diskussionen bis zum Coaching geschehen. Mein Ziel ist es, durch meine visuelle Arbeitsweise neue Wege des Zusammenlebens und einer nachhaltigen Gesellschaft zu entwerfen und Möglichkeiten aufzuzeigen, wie wir diese gemeinsam erschaffen können.

Wie hat dich die Ausbildung zur KaosPilotin verändert?

Heute weiss ich viel klarer, was ich will und was nicht, wie ich die Dinge anpacke, um gute Ergebnisse zu erzielen und vor allem, wie ich Hindernisse aus dem Weg räumen kann.

Oft scheitern die eigenen Träume an Unsicherheiten, Zweifeln und Ängsten, bevor man überhaupt etwas anfängt.

Heute weiss ich, wie ich die eigene Hirn-Kirmes im Zaum halte und wie ich diese Energie nutzen kann, um meine Projekte zu realisieren, statt mich selbst zu sabotieren.

Wo siehst du dich in fünf Jahren?

Als etablierte Graphic Facilitatorin mit vielen Aufträgen im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit und New Society Design, die es mir erlauben, viel zu reisen und neue Erfahrungen zu sammeln, während wir gemeinsam eine Zukunft ­entwerfen: jenseits von Überproduktion, 50-Stunden-Wochen und Burn-Out einer­ seits und lebensbedrohlicher Armut, Ressourcenknappheit, Ausbeutung von Menschen, Tieren und Umwelt andererseits. Zwischen den Aufträgen sehe ich mich in e ­ inem sonnigen Atelier mit viel ­Kunstmaterial, mindestens zwei adoptierten Katzen aus dem Tierheim und einem ­Garten in der Nähe, den mehrere Generationen ­gemeinsam bewirtschaften.

Für wen ist diese Ausbildung nicht geeignet?

Zuerst dachte ich an Leute, die viel Sicherheit brauchen, nur auf Bücherwissen setzen und nicht gerne Neues ­wagen. Aber so waren wir doch alle auch einmal! Wenn man KaosPilot sein will, muss man einfach bereit sein, die eigene Komfort-Zone zu verlassen und darauf vertrauen: “I’ll be ready when I get there.”

KaosPilot Outpost in

Cape Town – a great opportunity

In February 2015, a group of 48 KaosPilots, 13 from Switzerland and 35 from Denmark, arrived in Cape Town. Following are some of the experiences and learnings from their three and a half months together in the Outpost.

Coming from the cold and wintery Bern and Aarhus we were all happy to see and feel the warmth of the sun. We were thrilled to see blue skies and stunning nature and to meet lots of wonderful, happy and curious people. It didn’t take long though, before we started realizing the extreme diversities in Cape Town. We saw people living on the streets outside the high walls, fences, and gates ­surrounding our new homes. We were also told again and again about the dangers of walking alone at night on the streets of this vibrant city.

After our first days of landing in Cape Town we boarded a bus and headed for a project week in Swellendam. There were rumours and worries among the students of stories from the previous less successful merger between the two schools. Thus it felt as if the schools and the students put extra effort into creating a successful merger.

We started our journey together with an offsite week at a beautiful picturesque farm in Swellendam where the ­Danish and Swiss students lived together in small houses. ­During this week we had the pleasure of having Matti Straub-­ Fischer, our headmaster, with us who led us through an alignment process. We also had plenty of time for i­nformal activities. We were swimming and canoeing in the lake.

We played football, rugby, cricket and beach ­volley. In the evenings the bonfire was lit, the bar was opened, songs were sung, and dance moves were shown off on the dance floor. By the end of the week a beautiful relationship ­between the two teams had been created. This evolved into the creation of ONE organization.

Forming and staffing the organization came with ­plenty of

challenges, frustrations and learnings. Designing, ­ develop­­ ­ ing, implementing, and closing an organization with 48 p ­ eople and 12 partner organizations in three and a half months is not an easy task to accomplish. An important ­learning, for the Swiss team especially, was that being part of a big organization can be clumsy, time consuming, and basi­ cally impossible if you try to involve everyone in the whole process. After all we ended up having the following internal organi­zation project groups: an organizational steering group, internal communication, external communication, learning & reflection, ministry of happiness, finance, and process consultants. As an organization we were recom­mended to only take on ten external partner projects. Our ­organization however, decided to work on 12 partner p ­ rojects.

Once the organizational model was set we were ready to staff accordingly. One of the main aims of the Outpost was learning how to navigate in complexity and ambiguity, and certainly the schools did well in creating learning opportunities for this. In the Outpost each student had to be part of minimum two group projects and at least one of the two needed to be an external partner project. The second project could be either an additional external partner project, or an internal organisation project. No two groups contained the same people.

In addition to the two projects all students had to be part of an organisation-wide project, making everyone part of three projects. Each of the external partner projects worked in close collaboration with their partner organisations and their people and therein lies the complexity: how does one plan and communicate without anyone missing out when you are involved with so many people in your different projects? At times this was a frustrating experience and big learnings were made about prioritization, communication and handling stress.

Another central aim of the Outpost was creating relationships and we were challenged to explore a new kind of

relationship in the form of partnerships. As KaosPilots we were used to working with clients and not partners. So we had to discover and investigate how to approach this new way of working together. What we learned is that working in partnerships gave a good foundation and understating of the importance of clarifying shared ownership and goals of projects. Partnerships also turned out to be good door openers for creating relations with the local communities, project stakeholders and Cape Town.

What were the main differences between the Danish team and the Swiss team? As mentioned earlier the Danish were used to moving as a bigger group of people. Coming from the Swiss team we had to learn how to not be part of every decision and process. The Danish team also seemed more event-oriented than the Swiss team. This is probably due to their bigger resources in forms of manpower and budget, being an old and well-established school. The question then was: What is most valuable for learning how to become an entrepreneur? In terms of tools and skills we seemed to be on the same level and had been taught the same set of thoughts, methods and tools.

In conclusion, the Outpost was a great opportunity for working with, and strengthening, the bonds with the D ­ anish school. The relationship between Team 2 from Switzerland and Team 20 from Denmark grew strong and many of us are still in contact and have been meeting up during the summer. The Outpost was a highlight of the education and many learnings still unfold today.

This was only a hint of all that can be shared about the experiences and learnings from the 2015 Outpost. For any further curiosities don’t be afraid to get in contact with any of the students of Team SUI2.

outpost partners

AfrikaBurn The KaosPilots worked on the Mantis project: a three-yearold idea that finally came to life during the project period.

The Mantis project focused on community building with the people of Elandsvlei. The aim was to bring the community together by building one of their old historical gods – the Mantis – out of bamboo cane and tissue paper and ending it with walking the giant Mantis at AfrikaBurn as proud participants and creators.

Cape Craft Design Institute The Cape Craft Design Institute brought in the KaosPilots in order to engage in an external analysis of the South African after-school environment and give their recommendations and suggestion on how the design of such a program could look like through action research and rapid prototyping.

District 6 Museum The KaosPilot task was to design a way for the District Six Homecoming Centre to be financially sustainable.

Innovate South Africa The KaosPilot task was to create a formalised mentorship program with mentorship guides, resource packs and links to further opportunities for the youth. The final outcome was a mentorship guidebook consisting of guidelines on how to be a mentor, as well as a tool for tracking the ­mentees’ progress.

Innovate South Africa The KaosPilots supported Innovate South Africa (ISA) in the ignition phase of launching the Bellville Box competi­ tion by designing and conducting workshops for high school students. One aim was to show the students how to go through ideation processes and develop their ideas as a preparation for applying for the Bellville Box competition. The other aim was to design and conduct a teaching ­session for ISA’s volunteers on how to facilitate the workshops they had designed for the Bellville Box. In total the KaosPilots facilitated 17 workshops with about 250 ­students at seven schools and conducted a teaching for 12 of ISA’s volunteers.

Macasar Pottery The initial task was to develop the business curriculum and therefore immediate action research and prototyping was done. The process eventually led to a change of project scope based on a re-prioritizing by the partner. The new scope was to prepare the employees to take over the pottery and for the partner to leave the position.

Once in Cape Town For Once in Cape Town the KaosPilots assisted in ­co-­developing a new concept called “Once on a Road­trip”.

It is about a wandering hostel that would travel around ­South Africa leaving a trail of meaningful experiences in the spaces it travels through. The focus of the collaboration was to co-design and develop a social and cultural catalyst that would bring people together and bridge cultures and passions by creating social experiences.

OYI Outspoken Youth Initiative (OYI) is a non-profit organization that operates in Gugulethu and its surrounding ­suburbs in Cape Town. It is creating a positive social impact through working with elderly and youth in their c­ ommunity. The aim of the collaboration with the KaosPilots was to ­create an “OYI-land”: So far, the community has mainly been connec­ting at events they organise. There is a need for a community centre where the members can connect and learn from each other and where OYI can work more effi­ ciently.

Partnership Cape Town It is a collaboration between the KaosPilots and the city of Cape Town. The scope was to investigate what a partnership is by looking into what Cape Town has to offer, how to connect with different partners and to create new collaborations. Using a design thinking perspective of moving from exploration into connection, creation and defining, the project group used the four phases as a framework for inves­tigation into development.

Surplus People Project Surplus People Project is an NGO which focuses on supporting and giving a voice to the forest and farm communities that have been neglected by the government and the economic forces, both in the past and in the present. The target for the KaosPilot group was to co-create a campaign or concept about how to raise awareness around the issue.

Ubuntu Academy Ubuntu Academy is a school for arts, entrepreneurship and leadership in Cape Town. It aims to be a place for creativity and personal growth, where the students are guided to become creative leaders who manifest positive social change. Ubuntu Academy was finishing their two-year pilot project. The task for the KaosPilots was to create a kick-ass graduation for the students, evaluate the past two years and develop the current concept into a blueprint.

Young in Prison A staff member of Young in Prison along with some of the released young prisoners started a collective called KIF which was the KaosPilot’s main partner. KIF’s previous accomplishments include two published comic books and a very successful exhibition in 2014. They had a wish to develop the collective further to become an income generating enterprise for the young post-release prisoners and the whole organization.

Meet the

Team Leaders The KaosPilots is a special school. There are no c­ lasses but teams. There are teachers, of course, but the ­reference person for the students is the Team ­Leader.

SunOtter and Sam Nüesch talk about their work.

SunOtter I remember when Matti Straub-Fischer asked me to come be a Team Leader for Team SUI3 of KaosPilots. I instantly became ­excited and knew this was the perfect creative challenge in which to apply all of my life and work experiences. I had had leadership roles in the non-profit sector, led large inter-agency collaborations, designed and implemented county wide initia­tives for youth at risk, trained and mentored univer­ sity students to provide youth development services, among other related field experience.

I have over 20 years of deep study and practice of Earth Wisdom Teachings through individual and group ceremonies. These teachings are the core of the Council Guide Training (CGT) which is part of the KaosPilots curriculum. I am skilled at sharing the knowledge of the teachings in an organizational setting. What is often not known is that the teachings are comprised of community life tools, decisionmaking tools, leadership tools and other knowledge that can be applied on a personal, organizational, societal and global level to create change and transformation.

My role at the KaosPilots is to create processes and experiences that evoke the students to engage, discover, and develop their abilities in project work, process consulting, business plan development and inner leadership. The role of a Team Leader is a teacher with the added scope of the CGT tools and concepts.

In one sense, my role is to implement the learning outcomes from the KaosPilots curriculum, design lesson plans, and coordinate work projects with outside clients and book exter­nal teachers for specific topics. The added dimension of my Team Leader role is to cultivate a learning environment that integrates the inner leadership tools of CGT within the frame of the KaosPilots curriculum. My role is to help the students challenge and explore their worldview in a way that brings value, meaning and a clearer sense of purpose for themselves.

One of the greatest challenges I face as Team Leader is trying to offer as many learning opportunities, information and experiences as possible in only a 3 year period. What is a “right” combo of teaching, experience, and challenge to anchor deep learning that meets the individual uniqueness of each student and grows each team as a collective force.

This is also what I love about this work, the opportunity to discover and explore the “right” mix of encouragement, strict guidance, creative challenge,proper citationof research in an exam report, a realistic budget for a business plan while holding space for students to find an inner alignment that maximizes their gifts and talents for the greatest good.

Neu in dieser Funktion ist Sam Nüesch. Er hat im Sommer seinen Abschluss als KaosPilot gemacht und begleitet jetzt zusammen mit Cedric Zaugg Team SUI4. Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen.

In meinem Abschlussjahr bei den KaosPiloten erhielt ich die Chance, als Team -Leader- Assistent für Team SUI3 zu arbeiten. Dies war nicht nur eine willkommene Gelegen­

heit, Erfahrungen in meinem Interessengebiet zu sammeln, sondern kam einer kleineren Erleuchtung gleich: das ist ein Traumjob!

Die Kombination aus Arbeit in und mit dem Team s­ owie dem Analysieren und Planen mit den Team Leadern ergab genau jene Atmosphäre, welche ich mir bei der ­ ­Arbeit w ­ ünsche. Es ist dies eine Atmosphäre des aktiven, ergebnis­ orientierten Experimentierens und Lernens. Als ich dann das überraschende Angebot erhielt Team Leader des Team SUI4 zu werden, musste ich mich zusammenreissen, um noch ein paar Tage Bedenkzeit zu nehmen. ­Danach war die Antwort ein klares Ja! Bereits während den letzten Monaten des Studiums nahm ich an den Sitzungen zur Planung des ersten Semesters für Team SUI4 teil. Ich konnte viele meiner Erfahrungen als Student einbringen. Nach der Diplomierung konnte ich mich über die Sommermonate in die weiteren Aufgaben ­eines Team Leaders einarbeiten und seit September ist mein Team SUI4 nun vor Ort. Zu den zentralen Aufgaben eines Team Leaders gehört es, zum einen die Selbstorganisation im Team anzukurbeln und zum anderen sicherzustellen, dass die Lernziele erreicht werden. Es gilt, klar gesteckte Ziele zu erreichen – und das mittels eines Prozesses, der so viel Lernen und Selbst­ organisation des Teams mit einschliesst wie irgend möglich.

Eine der spannendsten Herausforderungen ist es zu­­­erkennen, wo sich das Team als Ganzes befindet. ­­­Die ­Gruppe­

hat ein grosses Spektrum, was das Alter, den beruflichen und kulturellen Hintergrund, die Interessen und Persönlichkeiten angeht. In diesem Spannungsfeld gilt es, sowohl die einzelnen Personen also auch die Dynamik der ganzen Gruppe im Auge zu behalten.

Bei dieser Aufgabe hilft mir die Sichtweise, dass sich gute Führungspersonen und gute Prozessberater möglichst schnell überflüssig machen sollten. Oft ist es verführerisch, schnelle Antworten zu liefern. Und ich ertappe mich oft ­ dabei, meine Antworten für die richtigen zu h ­ alten.

Oft bin ich überrascht, dass das Team immer ­ wieder ­Antworten f­indet, an die ich nicht mal gedacht habe, und Resultate und Lösungen hervorbringt, von denen ich kaum zu ­träumen gewagt hätte. Sie verwandelt sich dann in eine beinahe kindliche Neugier und ein Staunen darüber, ­welche Weisheit in uns allen steckt – sofern man uns nur den Raum zur Entfaltung lässt.

Sehr dankbar bin ich für die Zusammenarbeit mit meinem Co-Team-Leader Cedric Zaugg und Senior Team Leader SunOtter. Sie geben nämlich auch mir genau diesen Raum zur Entfaltung. Den Raum von Möglichkeiten derart auszu­ schöpfen, dass auch wildeste Experimente in Betracht gezogen werden, kannte ich vor meiner Zeit als Team ­ ­Leader bloss aus philosophischen ­Gedankenexperimenten während des Studiums. Hier nun bei den KaosPiloten ­leben wir diese Philosophie, hier leben wir Experiment, hier ­lernen wir alle – Studierende wie Lehrerpersonen – gemein­sam voneinander durch Erfahrung. Es ist ein ­Traumjob!

what is it all about?

Einen Tag lang Kaospilot oder -pilotin sein Von Trix Angst

Was ist bei den KaosPiloten anders als in anderen Ausbildungen? Und wie fühlt es sich an, mit ihnen zusammen zu arbeiten? Antworten auf diese Fragen können Interessierte an den KaosDays finden.

Es ist nicht einfach, eine Ausbildung wie diejenige der KaosPiloten Schule zu beschreiben. Wer die Website der Schule oder Medienartikel über die Ausbildung oder Absolventen liest, merkt: da läuft etwas anders als an ­anderen Schulen – aber was genau? Hier setzen die neu konzi­pierten KaosDays an: Sie vermitteln Interessierten einen Tag lang die Erfahrung, als Kaospilotin oder Kaospilot unterwegs zu sein. Denn noch so viele schöne Sätze können nicht die Wirkung einer persönlichen Erfahrung ersetzen.

22. Oktober, erster KaosDay: 50 Personen sitzen im Kreis.

Der Tag beginnt wie jeder Tag hier: mit einem Check-in.

Jede Person sagt ihren Namen, woher sie kommt, wie es ihr geht und endet mit “I am checking in“. Bei den Kaos­Piloten wird Englisch gesprochen, denn die Studierende kommen

aus den unterschiedlichsten Ländern. Nach dem Check-in übernehmen die Studierenden von Team SUI3 die Gestaltung und die Moderation des Tages. Sie leiten die “Morning practice“ an, auch das ein fester Bestandteil ­eines Kaos­ Piloten-Tags. Lockerungs- und Präsenzübungen, manchmal auch Lieder oder Meditationen, die helfen, an- und in den Körper zu kommen und miteinander in Kontakt zu gehen.

Dann wird’s handfest. Thema des ersten KaosDays ist “Project Design“. Das heisst: Wie wird aus einer Projekt­ idee ein Konzept? Welche Phasen durchläuft ein Projekt?

Wie kann Brainstorming auch aussehen? Team SUI3 führt die Teilnehmenden durch den Tag, teilt sie in kleine Gruppen auf, lässt sie an konkreten Projektideen arbeiten, bringt sie wieder im grossen Kreis zusammen, und… ja, da sind wir wieder: wie das vor sich geht, ist schwer in Worte zu fassen. What are you doing at the KaosPilots?

What is it exactly you are doing at the KaosPilots? It is one of the questions we hear most. That’s why we came up with the concept of the KaosDays: to be a KaosPilot for one day. Read what participants experienced and how one of the facilitators looks back at the day.

I am now in my third semester of my KaosPilot adventure – this is the process facilitation semester. You might think: “what is process all about?” I can tell that team SUI3 had the same question when we started the semester in September. Now more answers to that question appeared and on K ­ aosDay #1 we had a very practical experience of process facilitation.

So process facilitation is about designing workshops, where we as facilitators are not involved in producing the content, but rather introducing tools, asking questions and holding the container (atmosphere) for the group. It is all about liste­ning, both to the spoken and unspoken and also s­ ensing the energy in the room. It is about designing a plan with an introduction of tools, time to use the tools and to ­reflect on them afterwards. AND to be ready for shifts in the plan a­ ccording to what is needed in the specific moment. Rarely a plan works out completely as

you expected, so it is also about being over-prepared and under-structured. And this is not as easy as I thought in the beginning. It really takes your full attention during the whole process, from starting the planning, during the workshop itself and until the c­ losing evaluation. During the first KaosDay it didn’t feel as if I was doing a lot of work. Mainly I was listening and a few times I was introducing tools for my group of participants. In the evening and the day after I was tired as if I had been running Berner Gran Prix.

It is a brand new way of working for me, but it is super fasci­nating how much it means to be holding the container for a group of people without participating in finding solutions on specific topics or problems. I strongly believe this way of consulting is very sustainable, because the solutions are created within the people who are working with the p ­ roblem/topic and not by someone from ‘outside’. I am looking so much forward for the two other KaosDays in N ­ ovember and January, which I hope will be just as ­inspiring, fun and motivating as #1!

Meet the new

KaosPilots of Team SUI4

Shiori Morita Hello! I come from Japan. I am a chocolateholic, I prefer milk and white chocolate. I love to visit cafes. I had worked in Japanese companies for two years since I gradu­ated from university. My first job was to import flower materials such as vases and Christmas wreaths from overseas and sell them to businesses such as flower shops and bridal services. My second job was to ­ manage ­ orders from 17’000 7-­ Eleven stores all around Japan. My moti­vation to join the KaosPilots is my family and my friends in my country. They have always watched over me from Japan. My dream is to make others happy. I would like to ­create an environment that enables care takers to work. I think one of the important things about team work is to create an environ­ ment that enables every team mate to be challenged.

Kawira Nyaga I come from Nairobi, Kenya. I worked as a brand strategist/admin and also got in a few social/economic transformation programs.

Due to a change of heart, curiosity and ­interest in a different path, I then become a yoga instructor. I have a dream to be selfemployed and run my own business in the near future. The KaosPilot school has a different way of viewing and approaching the world as far as business, education, life and personal development is concerned which I am really attracted to. I feel that it holds a space for me to learn and unlearn alternative ways of approaching life in general and support me in developing some soft skills to bring my dream into reality. My dream is to create a safe space of expression in form of a centre where art, body movement, music and poetry are celebrated as another form of education. It will also be a space where discussions and debates around the things that are of concern to society can be held.

Lillvi W. Hole I come from Norway and have a Bachelor degree in marketing. I love nature, it gives me a sense of belonging. I also like challenges and completely new experiences, so you can find me meditating at an ­ashram in India, or sitting on the front row at a talk about Macro Economy. My motivation to join the KaosPilot was that I wanted to ­develop my professional skills and perso­ nality even further. I was looking at d ­ ifferent master programs until I stumbled upon the KaosPilot. So obviously there was no doubt what my next mission in life would be. My dream is to work with new creative strategies and change management for existing firms. I also want to start up and build new companies. Furthermore, I want to be able to enjoy life with a sense of purpose and fulfilment. Who knows, in the end I might just end up becoming a monk…

Ane Pind Bagge I am Danish, however, I would more like to be considered as a person of this world who likes to travel, meet people, experience cultures, beliefs and traditions. I collect experiences and learnings and use what I feel make sense for my own life.

I don‘t have a ‘real‘ degree from an institution. I have been around in different fields, taken c­lasses in photography, working at restaurants, been active in politics, and travelled a lot. I have an idea of which direction I want to go in my life, but many things are still unclear, and I still have too many questions and things I haven‘t explored yet.

Hopefully I will, during the next three years, get a more clear idea of my future: what to do, and how to do it. I have never been a big fan of the ‘classic‘ school system since I think it is important to mix the teachings AND hands-on work and real-life experi­ ences. That is why I am here.

Adrian Merz Ich komme aus der Schweiz und habe eine Ausbildung als Schreiner gemacht. Bevor ich die KaosPiloten-Schule angefangen habe, bin ich viel gereist: In Nicaragua habe ich geholfen, ein Strandhaus zu b ­auen, in Kanada habe ich den Pulverschnee ­genossen und in Irland habe ich eine Yogahütte gebaut. Anschliessend habe ich temporär als Schreiner und Snowboardlehrer gearbeitet. Ich habe mich für diese ­Schule entschieden, weil ich Träume habe und ­diese umsetzen möchte. Ich möchte meine eigenen Projekte realisieren und durch­ führen. Ich träume davon, auch am Montag voller Freude zur Arbeit zu gehen und die Welt ein bisschen fairer machen zu können.

Eva Dorobisz Ich komme aus Basel. Schon in den 1990ern wollte ich an die KaosPiloten ­ Schule in ­Dänemark, konnte damals aber aus v­ielen Gründen nicht aus der Schweiz weg und habe nach einer kleinen Universitäts-­ Odyssee erfolgreich eine Ausbildung zur Röntgenassistentin absolviert. Das ­Arbeiten mit den Händen und dem Kopf war und ist mir sehr wichtig. Nach 10 glücklichen ­Jahren im Beruf bin ich zum Schluss g ­ ekommen, dass es Zeit für einen Wechsel ist und bin zufällig über die ­Annonce des Kaos­PilotenInfoabends in Basel gestolpert. Und ich war sofort wieder Feuer und Flamme für die Idee, das Ausbildungskonzept und die Philosophie der KaosPiloten.

Andreas Bangerter Ich komme aus Bern. Vor dem Studium habe ich das Gymnasium und den Vorkurs der Schule für Gestaltung abgeschlossen.

Danach war ich im Zivilschutz und habe als Trockenmaurer bei der Stiftung “UmweltEinsatz Schweiz” gearbeitet. Wieso mache ich diese Schule? Ich will etwas verändern.

Ich will nicht nur herumsitzen und Sch**sse auswendig lernen, um es dann einige Tage später wieder vergessen zu können. Ich will kein langweiliges Leben. Ich will ­meine ­Talente positiv einsetzen. Und ich will es jetzt tun. Mein Traum ist es, dass jede S ­ chule zu einer Oase von Kreativität, Wissens­ austausch, Neugier, Respekt, A ­kzeptanz, Vertrauen und Lernbegierde wird.

André Fernandes I am from Brazil. I graduated in Public Admi­ nistration, I am experienced in ­consulting, social media and online marketing as well as travel writing. I have lived in India, Egypt and Serbia for some time and travelled through 11 other countries. This world trip turned my life upside down: It recalled my passion to get in touch with different reali­ ties and to redesign my life by ­aligning it to what makes me feel alive. I see the Kaos­ Pilots as the best place to build the ­future I dream of for myself, to combine my c­ areer with my love for travel, and to c­ onnect diffe­ rent cultures and design ­thinking which is a place where I can allow my craziness to flow!

Support a KaosPilot Our KaosPilot students all show tremendous courage by stepping into an education that is challenging them for three entire years. They grow into becoming responsible entrepreneurs and change-makers.

Our students and school need support in various forms: Southern Scholarship 2 to 3 students per team receive a Southern Scholarship covering their tuition fee and their costs of living for the three years. It is for students who could otherwise not ­afford their training with us. Currently we have 5 scholarship students from South Africa, 1 from Kenya and 1 from Brazil. A Scholarship adds up to CHF 100’000 for each student. You can support one of our scholarship students with an amount of your choice.

Melilizwe Gqobo I was born in Orlando East Soweto, South Africa but I have spent most of my life in Cape Town. I am passionate about fusing business mechanisms to address social issues in limited resourced communities. ­ My playground is the “base of the pyramid” although I was trained and am training with the “top of the pyramid”. This a­ llows me to have the necessary skills and tools to hopefully even out the playground to ­access to basic sustainable resources. My ­academic background is in marketing, business ­ma­na­­ge­­­­ment and social entrepreneurship. I have been involved in a number of NGO and local start-up ventures that helped to ­develop me into the holistic social entrepreneur I am today. My keen interest and excite­ ment to study at KaosPilot Switzerland is of pure drive to further develop myself personally and professionally. I dream of a world with sustainable impact of our resources. What is also important for me is information, ­ideas, people, love and trust!

Lanlan Jin I was born in Harbin, in Northeastern China.

When I was 11, I moved to the US. After finishing a BA in Biology, I joined the ­Japan Exchange and Teaching program. It allowed me two years of financial freedom, travel­ ling and some of the most meaningful working as well as personal experiences of my life, especially making me realize the importance of community. In August 2015 I arrived in Switzerland to do a Master’s in health science. This seemed logical after I had been seeing health as a common pro­ blem in various parts of the world. However, the program turned out to be much more rigid and less innovative than it was advertised. The more I learned the more I realized that I didn’t want to contribute to this system the way it was already built.

Then I met a student from Team SUI3 and other awesome people at KaosPilots. And now the adventure begins.

Sverre G. Gravdahl Gran I come from Oslo, Norway. I have studied different subjects at Universities in Trondheim for the last four years while also working as a sales representative in an ­electronic store. My dream is to live a life in peace with nature and the people that live on it with me. To prepare my own food and be free of the factory farms. I would also like to change the education system to better fit with the times and the people that attend it and more! I am optimistic that this education, and the network that it brings with it, will help me achieve and surpass my dreams and become a better person, inside and out, and to be able to help others do the same.

Maja Boesen Madsen I am as Danish as it can be, born and raised.

I have a degree in Social Education and have been working with everything from homeless people, young people to people with disabilities, in Denmark as well as in Africa. Besides working, traveling has been an important part of my life. I have an urge to learn, create and be inspired. I am really motivated by the KaosPilots and this space where you combine creativity with learning and questioning. A place to challenge what we do – here, in society, in the world – and why and how we do it? I saw this as the perfect solution for me as I dream to inspire and create more awareness as individuals and how we live together in a society.

Private loans for one of our students Several of our KaosPilot students need a private loan to make it through their three years of studies. Project challenges and jobs Do you have a project challenge for one or several of our students? We are looking for assignments given to them from companies, NGOs or governmental institutions in the area of trend research, project or campaign development or business plan development. Or do you have a job for one of our students? Our students can work up to 15 hours per week in addition to their training at the KaosPilots.

David Plenderleith I come from a distant land where the soil is red and animals run free... I‘m guided by ­unseen forces and my dream while ­being here is to embrace all the learning I ­possibly can. After ‘school‘ my dream is to revolutionise an industry. Before I came to the KaosPilot I studied Graphic Design, worked for an avant-garde magazine, joined a ­record ­label and facilitated operations for a creative space in Cape Town. Since then, I‘ve been working with different artists, ­painters and muralists [whom I bow down to] on diffe­ rent projects. My reason for joining the school is I‘d like to hold hands with a group of change makers and uplift the world. I‘m a poet and dreamer who like to invoke sensitivity, preciousness and compassion.

Till Wegmüller My name is Till Wegmüller. I am a trained system engineer with specialisation in Linux and Unix. I have chosen the KaosPilots journey to establish my own company later.
