Kendra Sprague Joins LCC Foundation as New Executive Director The LCC Foundation welcomed new Foundation Executive Director Kendra Sprague in July 2016, replacing outgoing director Erin (Brown) Zeiger. Kendra has worked at Lower Columbia College for over five years in a variety of roles including Director of Human Resources and Interim Vice President for Student Success. She currently serves as the Vice President of Foundation, Human Resources, & Legal Affairs and oversees the Foundation as Executive Director.

Kendra comes to the foundation with years of community outreach experience and rich relationships with people both on and off campus. Prior to joining the college, she practiced law and ran a non-profit legal aid program. Kendra is a graduate of Washington State University and Willamette University College of Law. She and her husband Ted have three children and she is a firm believer in the transformational power of education. "Lower Columbia College has had a huge impact on the success of many people who live in our community," she said. "I am excited about the future of the Lower Columbia College Foundation, including the completion of the Student Success Fund endowment, the growth of the Wertheimer Planned Giving Society, increased scholarship offerings, and the launch of a new College Success Fund, which will support growth and innovative programs now and into the future."

JH Kelly Named LCC Foundation 2016-17 Benefactor of the Year Benefactor honorees have a history of providing charitable financial support to the foundation, and/or significant volunteer service to the college. Most notably, contributions from honorees have had major impacts on the college, its programs, students, or the community. In business for more than 90 years, JH Kelly was one of Longview’s founding companies. Founder Jack Kelly, Sr. made his way to Longview while traveling to California from Canada in the 1920’s. After meeting Robert A. Long, he decided to stay in Longview and opened his business on Commerce Avenue. Led by a fourth-generation “Kelly,” Mason Evans, JH Kelly is now one of the largest industrial mechanical contractors in the country. Over the past 25 years, JH Kelly has provided over $100,000 in financial and in-kind gifts to the college, supporting initiatives such as the LCC Student Success Fund, the LCC Head Start program, student scholarships, and various academic and athletic programs. “We recently celebrated the dedication of the new Head Start Memorial Park building which will serve hundreds of children and their families in the years to come,” said LCC President Chris Bailey. “We couldn’t have done it without the partnership of JH Kelly, which donated more than $75,000 in labor and materials for its completion.” JH Kelly is actively involved in many community based non-profit organizations including; the Columbia Theatre, St. John’s, United Way, The Boys and Girls Club, Students in Need, and Home with Heroes. Dan Evans, Chairman of JH Kelly, currently serves on the LCC Foundation Board of Directors where he shares his passion for industrial/vocational training to the betterment of the college.

LCC Receives $10,000 grant to support Student Success Recently, the Kirkland-based Biella Foundation donated $340,000 to all 34 community and technical colleges in Washington. Each college Foundation, including Lower Columbia College, received $10,000 to suppor t student scholarships and/or emergency assistance funds. “We’re hoping that a gift like this can inspire other foundations,” Joni Wolfe, spokesperson for the Biella Foundation, said. “Community colleges provide a qu a l i t y e d u c a t i o n a n d a springboard to a four-year school or a fulfilling career.” The founder of the Biella Foundation, a successful Seattle real-estate developer named Mart Bert, had a simple philanthropic philosophy: help those in need. To that end, the Biella Foundation has supported organizations that help families in distress with a special emphasis on education. “A statewide investment from a family foundation like this is unprecedented,” said former LCC Foundation Executive Director Erin Zeiger. “The $10,000 grant will be used to support the LCC Student Success Fund.” According to Zeiger, the Biella Foundation intends to continue this support each year.

Student Success Angel Spotlight: Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund For the third year in a row, the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund has provided the LCC Foundation with a $10,000 grant to support the LCC Student Success Fund. “Weyerhaeuser has been an amazing supporter of Lower Columbia College, its students and programs for many years,” said Kendra Sprague, LCCF Executive Director. “Their investment in the Student Success Fund has touched dozens of students who are now realizing their higher education goals and dreams.” Since 1992, Weyerhaeuser and its employees have donated over $300,000 to support Lower Columbia College students either through vocational scholarships, gifts in kind, and workforce program investments. “As a community college, our success is directly tied to the success and support of our local business and industry partners,” said LCCF Board President Alex Nelson. “Their investment will help ensure we have a vibrant community of trained and educated individuals to support their business in the years to come.”
LCC Foundation Names The Daily News as Community Partner of the Year The LCC Foundation celebrated 40 years of supporting excellence in education this year and honored The Daily News (TDN) for their “Students in Need” campaign to help LCC students stay in school. The Students In Need campaign raised nearly $38,400 in support of the LCC Student Success Fund, which provides emergency assistance for students who are at risk for dropping out of college due to financial need beyond scholarships or financial aid. LCC President Chris Bailey and Foundation Board Member Tim Welch presented the foundation’s first-ever Community Partner of the Year Award to TDN Publisher Rick Parrish at its annual Horns and Halos Gala in September. “We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community to help our students,” said LCC President Chris Bailey. “The TDN set a lofty goal of raising $15,000, which was quickly surpassed by the generosity of our community and the compelling opportunity to invest in transforming a student’s life. Without a doubt, we have an amazing community of supporters, both on and off campus. We are so incredibly grateful.”

Student Success Fund Each dollar donated to the LCC Student Success Fund is twice spent: helping students in need, and helping the college maintain quality programs. Students get the vital support they need for tuition and books, and the funds stay on campus to support programs. Since launching the fund in 2013, the Foundation has distributed nearly $150,000 in emergency grants to help nearly 500 students in need. The fund assists students who are most at risk for abandoning their education due to financial hardship. These one-time grants mean the difference between success and failure for students who are on their way to graduation. Alumni Investment in the Future of Healthcare
Give the gift of higher education! Affordability remains one of the largest challenges to student success. Help support a deserving student in a meaningful way.
The Lower Columbia College Nursing Alumni Scholarship was established in 2007 by three students who were committed to “paying it forward” for future nursing students. Bryan Lomax, Ed Hunt, and Don Schaefer established the nursing scholarship endowment as an altruistic opportunity to support future generations of students pursuing nursing careers.
The LCC Foundation awarded over $280,000 in scholarships to students in the 2015-16 year. Scholarships may be named in honor or memory of an individual or family member, and may also be established in the name of a business or organization to foster a spirit of corporate citizenship and community support.
Through grassroots fundraising efforts and a generous matching donation from Mark and Theresa McCrady and their families, their dream of creating an endowed scholarship soon became a reality. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be full-time, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have successfully completed Nursing 101 with a C grade or better.
Types of Scholarships Annual Scholarships Annual Scholarships provide one or more scholarship awards, in number and amount determined by the donor. Funding is renewed by the donor each year. Annual Scholarships require a gift of $500 or more.

Endowed Scholarships Endowed scholarships leave a lasting legacy by providing one or more scholarship awards in perpetuity. Endowment funds are invested, with up to 4% of the three year rolling average of the fund awarded after approval by the LCC Foundation Board of Directors. Endowed scholarships require a minimum gift or pledge of $20,000, payable within five years.
Scholarship Social Each year, scholarship recipients are celebrated at an annual scholarship social, where they have the opportunity to meet their donors and share their personal stories.

Adelina Delao Named 2017 Transforming Lives Award Winner It was an improvement of sorts, but Adelina was suspended for four months during her ninth grade year due to ongoing family drama. Once she was allowed to return to school, Adelina made up her mind to break the cycle of negativity and defeat in her life. She resolved that she would not fail herself like her mother had failed her.
From the very start, Adelina Delao faced incredible odds for overcoming the drug addicted world into which she was born. She received little nur turing as a child, and was regularly neglected in addition to serving as a pawn in a protracted custody battle. Due to her mother’s battles with addiction, Adelina and her brother were frequently left home alone without any food, running water or electricity. Although she was very young, hunger drove Adelina to beg for food at a convenience store near her home. At one point, she and her younger sibling were even abandoned at a local meth house. Forced by her circumstances to focus on survival, Adelina’s educational progress fell behind. She was placed in many special classes to help with reading and math at school, but life was a constant struggle. She bounced between relatives’ homes, and even attended three different middle schools one year. A few days before she was supposed to start high school, Adelina was thrown out of her stepfather’s home. She went to live with her father’s mother, who took Adelina in with literally nothing more than borrowed clothing on her back.

Standing at a crossroads in her life, Adelina took the brave step of enrolling in the Career Education Options (CEO) program at Lower Columbia College. The program, designed for students ages 16 to 21 who are behind in credits, don’t have a high school diploma, and have conditions that interfere with success in the traditional high school setting, was a perfect fit for her. Adelina began to excel in the program immediately. With support from former CEO Director Tuan Dang, Director Heidi Patrick and other program faculty and staff, Adelina soon received her diploma (well ahead of schedule). Spurred on by her success in CEO, Adelina immediately began an associate degree program at LCC. She continued to excel in her studies, and shortly before receiving her associate degree in June 2016 was named the Outstanding Art Student of the Year by LCC faculty. Adelina was accepted as a transfer student at The Evergreen State College in Olympia and began her studies there in fall 2016. Her future plans include continuing on to a master’s degree program, and finding a rewarding career that will allow her to help others find their way out of the darkness.
Sarah Nichols: 2016 All Washington Academic Team LCC student Sarah Nichols was honored along with 65 other All Washington Academic Team members during a ceremony in Olympia on March 24, 2016. Sarah’s world turned upside down in 2012 when her marriage ended. The former stay-at-home mom lost everything in the split, and enrolled at LCC in the hopes of finding work to support her five children. Although her original goal was job training, Sarah’s plan quickly expanded to include a transfer degree as she excelled in her classes. She earned her Accounting Technician degree in spring 2016, followed by a business transfer degree in the summer. Sarah’s suppor ters credit her intelligence, tenacity and perseverance (along with dedication to her family) as the secret to her success. Sarah’s mother, Lois Lavine, along with LCC President Chris Bailey and staff members Kendra Sprague, Stefanee Bunn and Sheila Burgin attended the ceremony. After graduating from LCC, Sarah landed a full-time job in the LCC Financial Aid Office. She hopes to eventually earn a bachelor’s degree in business through the Lower Columbia Regional University Center, located on the LCC campus.

Thomas Hansen Named 2016 LCC Alumni of the Year Over the course of an illustrious career spanning more than four decades, Hansen left an indelible mark on the world of collegiate athletics. Most significantly, he served as Pac-10 (now Pac-12) Commissioner for 26 years until his retirement in 2009. Hansen is perhaps best known for overseeing an era of incredible growth for college football. He served as administrator for the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA’s) Football Television Program for 11 years when it held the rights to all college games. He subsequently developed the Pac-10’s football television program while serving as Commissioner, and even played a small role in the development of a television sports network called ESPN.
“It is important that every state provide deserved support to its community college system. I benefitted greatly from my opportunity in community college, and believe many others have and Hansen had a major role in the will do so also,” Hansen said. founding and administration of the Bowl Championship Series for postseason football, which contributed greatly to the elevation of college football to a major national sport. Hansen is a member of the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, and has been recognized by the Football Foundation and Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport.
Hansen is a firm believer that athletics can play a major role in student success, especially the academic success of student-athletes. “Good sports teams help establish an esprit de corps among the student body, and can enhance the recognition of a college,” he said. Hansen began his community college education at LCC in 1955, and attended for two years before transferring to the University of Washington (UW) to pursue a degree in journalism. He was the editor of the college newspaper at LCC, and, perhaps not surprisingly, fondly remembers attending football games (LCC eliminated its football program in 1962 due to budget concerns). Former LCC English and Journalism instructor Wallace Graves played an important role in Hansen’s life, and even helped him persuade the UW to accept his transfer credits at a time when they were not inclined to do so. This intervention saved Hansen an additional year of studies, and helped shape his thinking about the importance of student advocacy.

Dedication of Honored Spaces As part of the Building Healthy Futures campaign, the LCC Foundation was granted authority to dedicate honored spaces on the LCC campus. The following spaces were dedicated through named major gifts in 2015-16.
Health & Science Building
Lyle P. Mack
The Lyle P. Mack Memorial Plaza is located at the Health and Science Building’s west entrance. Lyle Mack was a lifelong educator and learner who taught community education classes at LCC after retiring from the Longview School District. He was also a strong supporter of LCC’s mission and values. It was through these beliefs that he left a legacy gift that would benefit students. At the request of his family, the LCC Foundation dedicated the plaza in his memory. The Louis L. and Margaret A. Scharf Physics and Engineering Lab is dedicated in memory of Bob and Louis Scharf’s parents, Louis and Margaret Scharf. Louis and Margaret established and owned Scharf Electric, were founding members of the LCC Booster Club, and were active community service volunteers and lifelong supporters of education. In honor of their parents, sons Bob and Louis directed a significant gift to the Student Success Fund in order to help LCC students overcome barriers, stay in school, and complete their degrees. The Roy & Colleen McCrady Nursing Student Lounge In honor of their parents, Roy and Colleen McCrady, and their long-standing belief in the value of higher education, their children, Mark and Theresa, David and Melinda, Brian and Allison, and Dennis dedicated the Student Lounge on the second floor of the Health and Science Building. Encouraged by their belief in education, 12 of Roy and Colleen’s children and grandchildren have earned Associate’s Degrees from LCC. In the spirit of helping others, the McCrady family established an Endowed Scholarship. Naming the student lounge honors the McCrady Family’s ongoing support and commitment to LCC and the local community while creating a welcoming gathering space for students to take a break or study.

Outdoor Spaces
The Quoidbach Courtyard is located on the south side of the Rose Center for the Arts and was dedicated in memory of Rob Quoidbach, an LCC alumni and supporter of the college who was passionate about helping others. An engineer and contractor, Rob remodeled and built some of LCC’s buildings that are still in use today. In 2014 he was inducted as LCC’s Alumni of the Year. Rob’s bequest to the LCC Foundation will continue his legacy of investing in the local community through his support of LCC and its students. In addition to the naming of the Quoidbach Courtyard, a tree was planted in the courtyard as a tribute to his enthusiasm for his tree farm and honoring his motto: “I know not how or when the Lord may harvest me, but now and then I want it said of me that he tried to help humanity and plant a tree where he thought a tree should be.” Henry Lennstrom Stone Circle near Admissions The family of Henry Lennstrom dedicated one of the stone circle seating areas near the new LCC Pavilion. Henry worked at LCC as a math instructor in 1958, and then as the Dean of Instruction for many years. He later served as the acting president of the college, completing his service at LCC in 1980. The family believed a named space at LCC was a fitting memorial to their father and his service to the community.

Athletic Excellence Fund Athletic Excellence: It’s not just about sports, it’s about student success! College athletics is an important avenue to educational and career success. LCC’s student athletes rank near the top of their peers in academic achievement, many of whom are ‘home grown’ right here in Cowlitz County! Our athletic teams are ver y competitive and have earned 26 NWAC Championships in the past 47 years!
How You Can Support a Student Athlete Your financial gift of $3,500 to At h l et i c E xc e l l e n c e w i l l provide a student athlete with an academic scholarship as well as cover program costs for one year. An academic scholarship for a student athlete is $2,500 per year. Program costs average $1,000 annually and covers sports equipment, travel & lodging, and other related expenses. (2016-17)*
NWAC Volleyball 2016 Champs The Lower Columbia College volleyball team captured the hearts of the NWAC volleyball world by showing talent and perseverance on the way to the 2016 Championship in November. After taking the West Region co-championship, the Red Devils showed a never say die mentality at the Championship tournament played at the Tacoma Convention Center. LCC put together two miracle wins against Spokane and Walla Walla and found itself in the Final Two against powerhouse Linn Benton Community College. Linn Benton forced a deciding best-of-three and LCC took the crown with a 2-0 win. It was a total team effort led by MVP Kallie Schmit, first team selections Rachel Erickson and Haylee Savage, and second teamer Khloe Clark. Nina Bailey was named the tournament’s Most Inspirational Player. Head Coach Carri Smith led the team to the NWAC Championship in just her 4th season at LCC. Her assistant and husband Josh Smith during his job interview stated that the plan would be to win the championship by the fifth season. The Smiths were true to their word and delivered a year ahead of schedule. The last time a West Region team appeared in an NWAC Championship match was 1993 when Highline College lost to Mt. Hood Community College. The last West team to win it was the Jocelyn Price coached LCC team that won it in 1991, a team that featured former LCC coach Marcy Gilchrist at setter. Both Price and Gilchrist offered congratulations to the 2016 Red Devil team. The new championship banner was unveiled during a ceremony on January 21 at the LCC Basketball game against Highline in Myklebust Gymnasium.

2016 LCC Athletics Hall of Fame Class Six former Lower Columbia College athletes were honored with induction to the Lower Columbia College Athletics Hall of Fame on January 30, 2016. The inductees included: Dani (Bisel) Anderson Dani was the first dominating pitcher at LCC, sparking a two-decade run of team excellence for the Red Devil softball program. Bisel was nearly unhittable. She went 27-2 in her freshman year with a 0.74 ERA leading LCC to a 2nd place finish in the NWAC championships. She was even better her sophomore year with an ERA of 0.52 leading LCC to its first championship in 1994. Bisel was the NWAC MVP that season. Jim Baker Jim played tennis while a student at Lower Columbia, but it’s his long-time support of the entire athletics program that enters him into the Hall of Fame. The longtime owner of Baker Lumber Company, Jim was an original member of the LCC Booster Club and not only gave his time, but gave his money as a longtime supporter. He also is a great fan of the Red Devils.
Dani (Bisel) Anderson Softball
Bill Dunlap Bill played two seasons (1978-79; 1979-80) of basketball at Lower Columbia College where he was an All-Region player for the Red Devils and was named first team on the NWAC AllTournament Team. Bill became one of the top big men in the NWAC, averaging 19.7 points and 14.0 rebounds per game. Dunlap holds the LCC single game record for rebounds (26) and the career FG percentage mark (61%). Dunlap scored 1,008 points and averaged 19.8 ppg in his two years at Lower Columbia. Dunlap went on to a stellar career at Gonzaga University where he was an AP All-American Honorable Mention selection in 1982.

Terry Jones Terry was a two-sport standout at LCC where he excelled as a shortstop for the Red Devil baseball team and was an ultra-quick guard on the Devil basketball squad from 1968-71. He was a key member of the LCC baseball team that won the school’s first conference championship in 1970. He signed to play professional baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies where he made it all the way to AAA ball. Jones was one of the basketball signees of Don Porter who ushered in a new era of talent to the LCC program. Terry helped the Red Devils all the way to the NWAC championship game, where the Devils lost an epic overtime game with Peninsula.
Bill Dunlap Basketball
Tim Mackin Tim is the winningest softball coach in NWAC history. Tim took the Red Devils to dominating heights between 1994 and 2008. Under Mackin, LCC won 10 NWAC Championships including six straight and nine out of 10. Mackin collected over 600 wins as the Red Devil head coach. A native of Vancouver, Mackin made a name for himself in the softball world as a top national player on several teams. He was then selected by the legendary Eddie “King” Feigner to travel the world as part of the four-man King and His Court from 1983 to 1988.

Michelle (DeVries) Mury Michelle was a two-sport athlete at Lower Columbia College where she was a standout in basketball and volleyball. It was a knee injury while chasing a ball out of bounds in the 1986 season that ended her athletic stint at LCC, but she went on to greatness in another sport at the next level. Michelle graduated from Kelso High School in 1985, a three sport athlete who always had skill to go along with determination. That resolve was tested with her injury at LCC. She then attended Seattle Pacific University in Seattle where she turned out for track and field. Under the tutelage of Olympic and SPU coach Ken Foreman, Mury went on to capture the 1990 NCAA Division II javelin championship and All-American honors.

LCC Foundation Endowments Endowments are gifts that provide perpetual support for scholarships or other programs according to the intent of the donor. Endowments may be named to honor a loved one or to create a family legacy. The minimum required to establish an endowment is $20,000, which may be pledged over time.
