MAY 9-10, 2015

WORDS: Richard Williamson

The Norfolk venue returns to the Challenge calendar after a break last season, and on the previous visit in 2013 it was a weekend to remember for Andrew Deviny and Peter Baldwin, with hard-fought double victories in Se7en and Miglia respectively. Expect this May’s visit to be no less exciting… MINI SE7EN & S CLASS Prospects for a cracking Mini Se7en season in 2015 were certainly set into full swing at Combe, with a splendidly healthy 25-car grid, including returning 1993 Champion Tina Cooper, and a pair of races that both went right down Quick Links

to the wire. A wilt determination saw thrice former Champion Paul Spark take third place in the opener and the same experience to be in the right place on the last lap in the second race to pick up the full 20 points and go clear at the top of the table. Four points behind

Pit & Paddock in second is 2007 Champion, Max Hunter, who returns as competitive as ever after an enforced absence in 2014, and who picked up a best of second at Combe. On the same points but with a best of third is Jabez Dyer, and he should be one to watch among the leaders. Last year’s series runner-up, Darren Thomas looked set for a double victory to start this season’s campaign, but a mechanical glitch when leading the second race on the last lap dropped him down the order and to fourth overall in the standings. Meanwhile, reigning Champ

Andrew Deviny drove a stormer in the Combe opener to come from the very back of the grid to second, but whose ignition problems in qualifying returned at the start of the next race to leave him propping up the top-10 overall. A host of other likely frontrunners cannot be discounted from taking top points at Snetterton, while in the milder-tuned 1275cc S-Class category an encouraging five cars have appeared already, with seasoned campaigner Ian Deviny holding the points advantage with a double class victory.

Likely winners in Norfolk? As in the Grand National, there are too many to call, but you’ll be guaranteed hectic 1.0-litre horsepower as the runners and riders all jockey for position to the line. Place yer bets…

nks to a win and third place in the opening two rounds, leading the points table early in the season is nothing unusual for Kane Astin, but the Cambridgeshire driver will be hoping to finally add to his Mini Se7en title of 2009 with the coveted Miglia crown, having gone close on several occasions. That the experienced Dan Wheeler sits third overall heading to Snetterton is no surprise either, but what is less expected however is Mark Cowan’s current placing, just two points behind Astin, even allowing for the fact he has taken over the controls of the successful multi-titlewinning Baldwin Motorsport car. A second place and then a tigering recovery drive to fourth, including fastest lap at Combe, marks him out as a possible firsttime winner at Snett. Reigning Champ Rupert Deeth Quick Links

carried his 2014 form into this season with an opening race win, although a time penalty in the second has dropped him behind the rapidly improving Sam Summerhayes in the standings. With Dave Drew, Aaron Smith, Colin Peacock, Rob Howard, Tony Le May, Niv Burge and Tristen Knight all capable of podium performances too, predicting the winners is no easy task. However, predicting fast, flat-out action from start-to-finish among the 1.3-litre, slick-tyred monster performance Miglias is a safe bet! Adding to the Miglia grid, there will also be one or more of the historic-style Mini-7 Classic and Invitation Class cars along to provide an eclectic Mini mix.

Mini Se7en News

Chairman’s chat O ur first meeting has taken place at one of my favourite circuits, Castle Combe. Unfortunately I was unable to attend and I gather from various sources, that the racing was ‘eventful’ at times, but also the best racing of the day – No surprise there then! It must have been quite hectic for both Formulae to race twice in one day, a real test for the cars and more so for the mechanics! The next four rounds will allow drivers, cars and mechanics to ‘relax’ with one race on each day. One encouraging aspect of Castle Combe was the healthy entry list ~ Qualification 25 Mini Se7ens / S Class and 17 Mini Miglias {including Invitation Class}. This, I hope, is the way it will stay {or increase} for the Club’s 50th season of racing. Since the first meeting, we have now obtained, thanks to Mark Cowan and his brother, a fresh new website. If any of you find anything that doesn’t seem quite right, then please let Mark know. It must be very difficult to get every aspect of such a website ‘right’ on day one. I have joined the forum with no difficulty, yet again if you are having any problems, please inform Mark.

Quick Links

DRIVER PROFILES Also please give Mark your details, plus image if you are a driver; it makes the website that little more personal. Thanks again to Mark and his brother for all of their hard work

NEW SPONSOR We now have a new sponsor with Mini Spares. As Chairman I would like to thank all those at Mini Spares for their support and generosity. Also as a race member you are entitled to a generous discount on parts.......... so please make sure you are carrying the correct decals / door squares and remove non-current sponsorship logos. Steve Prior {Championship Scrutineer} will be checking this at the next meeting!

COMMITTEE MEETING It will be at the next meeting {Snetterton} that we will be holding our first Technical Sub-Committee at the race track. I will post those, who have volunteered to be on the Committee, with an agenda, suitable time and which day. In summary, the idea of the SubCommittee is to discuss any technical matters, either current or those that might be ‘on the horizon’, with the best intentions

for the club. Three definite items for discussion are dry decking, centre tunnel modifications and ‘unusual’ flywheels. The views of those who are either racing or preparing engines are welcomed. Currently, I have received three names from the Mini Se7en ‘paddock’ and one from the Miglia ‘paddock’. So a couple more from the Miglias, would give a balanced discussion.

BEST WISHES Finally I would like to wish two Members of the M7RC all the best with their current health issues....... Rob Selby and Allan Dawkins. Hope to see you both in the not too distant future. See you all at Snetterton.....

Mini Se7en News ...behind the wheel with charlie budd

C

harlie Budd may be a new driver with Mini Se7en racing this year but he is no stranger to mini racing with several years’ Mini racing experience under his hat; from oval racing; junior rallycross where he finished the season in fourth place twice, and then in Mighty Mini racing finishing an impressive second! Infact, his family have decades of history with the sport. His father’s 40 years in racing, competing since the ’70s, also with his brother currently taking part in the Mini Se7en championship too, Daniel Budd, there’s sure to be some family rivalry between them. His car, number 11, is a complete rebuild over the winter. It was bought in October 2014

www.mbracephotography.co.uk

from Darren Conway, but the only thing that still remains the same is the rollcage. With an approximate build cost of around 20k for this year it’s an investment for the long term future with aspirations for a title challenge in a year or two - but he’d be more than happy with a podium or two and a top 10 final position this year while he

develops the car further with his family team and friends. “With the great grid size and growing numbers of competitors and spectators the action can only get better for Mini Se7en racing,” says Budd. That’s why he doesn’t want to be racing anywhere else, but when it’s in your blood why would you want to...?

www.mini7.com website refresh The Mini Se7en Racing Club website www.mini7.com - has been beautifully refreshed and updated by our resident tech guru and early Miglia title challenger Mark Cowan. I’m sure all of you will agree he has done a great job and everything looks much more pleasing to the eye with more up-to-date goodies such as Twitter updates, videos and photo galleries from our regular snapper Matt Barrington - as well as the latest news and links to social media stuff. ood news, we have been invited to race at the world famous, ex home of the Dutch Grand Prix. Zandvoort is a quick and demanding circuit and it’s part of the “British Race Festival meeting”. www.britishracefestival.nl The invitation for the Mini 7 Racing Club extends to two races in a British Saloon car (Escorts, MG, Austin Healey’s, Rover, etc) All comers race. BONUS

From the club’s point of view, this race represents another end of season bonus (don’t forget the 50 plate at the end of October at Snetterton) and can scratch the itch that some may love to go racing overseas at an amazing circuit with no entry fees. If successful, we would like to build this event into our 2016 calendar as a full Championship round, thus to have some members provide direct feedback would be very helpful. Can we get a merry band together and show the Europeans our amazing club and cars? So far, over 10 drivers have registered their interest, the majority being Sevens….to register your interest email colinmpeacock@hotmail.co.uk

A safety rules you are allowed to race in Holland. The organisers realise that there will be travel costs for you to get to this meeting so have waived the entry fees, so to repeat - there will be NO entry fees for this event. The organisers have also made available some seaside cottages at a very good rate for those not staying in the back of your vans! MINI SE7EN: RACE 1 re were several teething problems for a few teams for the first meeting after the winter break. Ashley Davies was struggling with his setup in qualifying after a rebuild which led to him pulling out from the race; while Ross Billison ended qualifying early with a leaking clutch hose. The packed grid got away to a clean start and was very close for the whole race - top five neck and neck even at the end, just over a second between

them. The front group were chopping and changing places most of the race but Darren Thomas maintained the lead for most of it. The safety car was out for three laps after Thomas and Hunter had a scuffle which bunched the whole field up. This led to a great scramble when it went in on lap 6 and Paul Spark took 2nd at Quarry after being four-abreast going around.

Both BARC-run event programmes have the Minis gracing the front covers too! The first meet, on a dry but overcast 1 September, and round 12-of-15 of the National Challenges, produces a typical door handle-to-door handle, panel-rubbing, 12-lap 850cc Mini Se7en race. The result is a 0.1s win for Chris Tyrrell from Russell Grady, the pair of them swapping the lead throughout. Gary Hall gets closest to the leading duo, with James Hulme, Mike Jackson and Ralph Budd (father of 2015 Se7en debutant Charlie) completing the top half-dozen. It’s remarkable that nine of the 14 starters make it to the finish! Wenham is a country mile ahead at the end of the 19 October race (the penultimate round), and Martin Moorhead and Addison are his nearest rivals from an entry of twodozen, some 12+ seconds down the road. Pudwell sets the quickest qualifying time but is a non-starter due to a gearbox glitch.
