CFT’s £22 million opening Festival Theatre Chichester reopens after major redevelopment

Susanna Reid

news@chichesterherald.co.uk

CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE is celebrating the successful completion of a highly ambitious 21-month, £22 million redevelopment project this week, with the official reopening of its Grade 2* listed building. The Festival Theatre unveiled a major production of Amadeus starring Rupert Everett and Joshua McGuire, directed by Chichester’s Artistic Director, Jonathan Church. Executive Director, Alan Finch said: “The reopening of our Theatre just 21 months after its demolition began is the culmination of an experience

that has been exciting, memorable and at times extremely challenging! It’s an incredible achievement to have reopened the building on time, having met our fundraising target. I am immensely proud of the hard work undertaken by our architects, building team and contractors, Theatre staff and our Campaign Committee. We’re extremely thankful for the support we’ve received from our audiences, individual donors, stakeholders and businesses, as well as Arts Council England, West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council. Our goal was to safeguard this building for the next generation and we’re thrilled to have achieved this.” The refurbishment of the Theatre has involved a careful marriage of old and new (Pic courtesy Philip Vile)

Festival Theatre Chichester reopens after major redevelopment

Artistic Director, Jonathan Church said: “What’s always been unusual about this Theatre is that it was built by the vision of one local man Leslie Evershed-Martin, supported by hundreds if not thousands of people, all putting their hands in their pockets. The RENEW project feels that it’s recaptured that moment when the Theatre was first built, in a fresh and equally inspiring way. Yet again this city and region has responded and helped in so many ways, sometimes

with money, sometimes with time and effort, so it’s been very, very special. It’s going to be tremendously exciting to open the Theatre with Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus, nearly 50 years after the premieres of The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Black Comedy, and particularly special for Peter to be with us to celebrate.” The refurbishment of the Festival Theatre has involved a careful marriage of old and new. It has conserved the iconic and

architecturally significant features of the original modernist ‘concrete tent’. At the same time the redevelopment has incorporated essential repairs, major enhancements and a new extension, clad in distinctive Cor-Ten material, to house the new backstage facilities. The redevelopment has been conceived and undertaken by award-winning architects Haworth Tompkins, whose work includes the acclaimed redesign of London’s Royal

Man jailed for death crash AN 18-YEAR-OLD DRIVER was sentenced to serve four years in a young offender institution after his passenger was killed in a crash near Chichester. Harry Smith had admitted causing death by dangerous driving after Jasmine Elkasmi, 16, from Bognor Regis, died when his car rolled on to its side in Halnaker, near Chichester in September. Court Theatre, Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre and recently The Shed at the National Theatre. The building work has been carried out by Osborne, a company with strong links to the West Sussex area. It has worked on many projects in the region including the Shoreham Harbour footbridge and new G-Block at Chichester College. The RENEW redevelopment project was launched in 2012, during the Festival Theatre’s 50th anniversary year, in recognition that the building was operating on a scale way beyond what was envisaged when it first opened in 1962. The RENEW project received £12 million from Arts Council England. This immediately unlocked an additional £8 million in pledged local support from businesses, trusts and individuals, and, most notably, from West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council who pledged £1.5 million and £500,000 respectively. The remaining funds have been raised by the RENEW Campaign Committee and its Ambassadors. Over 12,000 people have now supported the appeal and the original fundraising target of £22 million has been met.

The key improvements include: Two new café and bar extensions opening onto outdoor terraces, and improved picnic areas – making the Festival Theatre a welcoming destination for everyone Bigger foyer areas with more space, light and seating – and twice as many toilets Improved Access facilities with two new lifts, making the Theatre fully accessible on all levels Transformed auditorium with increased seating capacity and refurbished seats An increase in the auditorium rake, improving sightlines and intimacy by bringing audiences closer to the stage A new extension housing significantly improved backstage facilities for actors, creatives and Theatre staff Changes to make the building more energy efficient including a new ground source heat pump system to both heat and cool the building

Support was also received from the Heritage Lottery Fund, whose grant of £1.2million supported the Theatre’s restoration and funded Pass It On, a 3-year community participation programme charting the history of Chichester Festival Theatre and creating an archive that celebrates the past 50 years.

MH17 One of the things at the heart of the Ukraine plane tragedy is that family and friends want to know what their loved ones last moments were like, and what and with whom were the events of their remains from the moment of death until recovery. Recovery meaning when the body is recovered by those who knew and loved them. LAST MOMENTS I expect we can all do this one with a lost friend or relative. My dad died cutting the lawn. He stopped the mower to sit for a moment on a bench on the patio and his heart gave out. When we found him, we also found an unopened bottle of Guinness on the draining board he’d put out as his reward. When my mum-in-law died we found a mug with a dry tea bag in it waiting to be covered with boiling water when she came downstairs from the bathroom, where she expired. When my dad-inlaw died, his civilian plane shot down over a foreign country by a ground to air missile, we learned almost nothing of his last hours, and since his body was never found, his daughters still live with nothing known about this most significant piece of someone’s life. For the record, it’s been a hard week for his dear daughters, as will it be hard for the family of MH17 victims when something like this happens again.

OBESITY As we know, everything in the Universe is expanding, except the minds of bigots. This expansion is disproportionate, with Mt Everest expanding at the same rate as the Atlantic, but not as fast as living organisms. Humans are getting taller. Anyone who’s been round the Victory can testify that at Trafalgar the average sailor was about 5 foot tall. But they weren’t fat. The doorways on Nelson’s ship are about the right width. So. Maybe the dinosaurs initially got too tall, then too wide and that’s what lies in store for us.

A ROBBER who went missing from Ford Prison has been found and arrested. Peter Mahoney left the prison on Friday (11 July) and travelled to Brighton on day release but did not return. Mahoney had been given an indeterminate sentence in 2010 after he admitted charges of racially aggravated wounding, possession of a firearm, robbery and possession of

an imitation firearm for offences he committed in London in November 2008. After a public appeal by Sussex Police, officers at the Metropolitan Police found the 37-year-old at an address in South London. Officers arrested Mahoney at a house in Sidcup Road, Eltham, at 1.30am on Thursday (17 July) on suspicion of being unlawfully at large. He is currently in custody.

Detective Inspector Alan Pack,

Missing Ford Prison robber Peter Mahoney arrested

of Sussex Police, said: “This shows how quickly we can find and arrest wanted people when police officers, other agencies and the public work together. “I’m grateful to the Metropolitan Police and the Prison Service as well as the media and the public for their help locating him.”

Packing Heavy I have just tried and failed to pack for my school trip to Italy tomorrow. I got distracted by my laptop which accidentally fell onto the lead that attaches it to the TV screen, and then suddenly an hour of my life had been spent watching Bones and thinking about the fact that I should probably be packing. The thing with all this packing malarkey is that you feel like you’re laying expectations on a trip. I always try (emphasis on ‘try’) to be realistic about what I need, and what I perhaps really really do not need. It can go in either direction; sometimes my bag is so heavy that I have to request stopping points so that I can tearfully sit down for a quick breather, but on occasions I just stuff a couple of tops and maybe some shorts in a bag and find myself pyjamaless in Paris a few hours later. The plot thickens on long holidays. There are many parts to these trips: pool lounging wear (not just a swimming costume guys) general day wear, walking wear, going-out wear, bedtime wear and the disappointing oh-god-it’s-noteven-hot-here wear. And you must also factor in the sad truth of the matter – outfit repeaters may be punished. I cannot be bothered with all

primary school students.

Mia Edwards of this work and consideration. It makes me feel like somebody who is going away on business. It begs the question, who am I even trying to impress with my vast wardrobe? The people in Italy tend not to know every tourist that walks past them, and everyone from school is probably going through the exact same dilemma. All you really need on holiday in this day and age are 2-3 outfits, the obligatory razor and maybe some other shower-related things. I just made myself laugh with that last sentence. So I’ve packed an outfit a day with some extras for good measure. I’ve also included my straighteners and hair serums, my books, my phone and iPod and makeup bag. There’s no benefit to packing light; hauling a heavy bag is really good for your body and it’s better to be prepared for any situation, so you know I’m all set.

Council turns ‘lights out’ in memory of WW1 THE LIGHTS will be out at Chichester District Council’s headquarters on Monday 4 August between 10pm and 11pm, to mark the hour that Britain entered the First World War, one hundred years ago. The council will be joining thousands of other organisations, businesses and homes in the UK, who are being encouraged to switch off their lights for an hour as a mark of respect, as part of the national ‘Lights Out’ event. The event, organised by the Department of Culture, will also coincide with a candlelit vigil at Westminster Abbey. At 11pm on 4 August 1914, Britain declared war on Germany, ushering in one of the darkest periods in our history. As the moment approached, the British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, made the famous remark: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time.” “We must never forget what happened in World War 1 and

how this event changed the world forever,” says Cllr Heather Caird, Leader

of

District

Council. “As a council we want to show our support for the ‘Lights Out’ event,

encouraging

people to have a shared moment of reflection between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August. We want to encourage other households and businesses to consider joining us in marking this moment, by switching off their lights for an hour. “We also wanted to illustrate the impact of the First World World War within the district and so our Novium Museum has launched ‘The Great War Brought Home’ exhibition. This brings to life the experiences of local people whose personal stories reveal the impact of WW1 in the district.” To

Rolls-Royce to fight 350 new homes plan THE BOSS of luxury car-maker Rolls-Royce has strongly opposed a 350-strong housing development that would leave its Goodwood plant “effectively in a housing estate”. Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös said the marquee brand’s secluded plant in the Goodwood Estate was the only location capable of meeting its exacting requirements. Proposals for a major residential development at Westhampnett, near Chichester, would leave Rolls-Royce’s attractive working environment “indistinguishable

from any UK urban location”. Mr Müller-Ötvös said: “This proposal will simply extent the suburban development of Chichester eastwards. “Rolls-Royce will effectively be located in a housing estate that is indistinguishable from any UK urban location - exactly the situation we sought so hard to avoid.” He added: “The scale and density of this proposed development... may damage the long-term future of Rolls Royce and its role in the economy.” The bespoke plant was built in

2003 for around £200 million. There was initial opposition to the plant and motor circuit – but its profile, sunken into the estate with a grass-topped roof, has become iconic and attracts visitors from around the world. The Commercial Estates Group, which is behind the development, said it would deliver much-needed new homes and provide Rolls-Royce staff with a convenient place to live. A decision on the development is pending with Chichester District Council.

What’s the difference between an incinerator and a gasification plant? There was a lot of ‘gassing’ going on at the county council chamber this week. The talk was over gas that might be in the ground and gas created from rubbish. First up was another proposal to drill for gas and oil – at Wisborough Green. But with the help of Likely Lad James Bolam and his wife, Susan Jameson, in the anticampaign, the idea was dumped. Disquietingly, a separate proposal for what critics say is a giant new incinerator with a double chimney, that will bring an extra 60 HGVs per day on to our residential and country roads, where our children live, breathe the air and play, was given a big fat green light. Old stuff like carpets A fundamental question we have to ask is, what do we do with all the waste we produce, I mean the stuff that isn’t recyclable? Like bits of old carpet. It’s got to go somewhere. Naturally, prevention is better than cure and the more we manufacture nice new carpets that can be recycled later, and the more legislation enforces that, the better for us all. Synthetic carpets, for instance, have been known to contain chemical nasties that

Allis Moss Writer and broadcaster

aggravate asthma and other health problems. But some argue there will always be rubbish that we’ll need to get rid of, like man-made fibre carpets that can’t be recycled. What are we actually going to do to the carpets? You and I are doing a crossword puzzle together. The clue for seven across is a treatment plant that uses oxygen somewhere in the process to treat old carpets then produces emissions, 12 letters. Is the answer incineration or gasification? Not incineration, Abi Field, a processing engineer from Bognor tells me: the new treatment plant at Ford Industrial Estate near Arundel will produce clean air and the only bi-products will be carbon. I thought we wanted to reduce our carbon footprint? “It’s better than producing methane from landfill,” says Abi.

Maybe they should plant a small forest to eat up the carbon while avoiding the methane? Local physicist Nicola Wilson says it’s an incinerator and the proposal for it to produce heat for homes and businesses is fantasy: “It will cost £1 million per kilometre to transport any heat it produces,” says she. Depressed over emissions For me, the most worrying thing is the emissions. We might be reassured to hear the Environment Agency says it’s fine as long as regulations are met. But Nicola says they found particulates like dioxides in local beef cattle in a similar plant that goes into the food chain. The fact that protestors say such emissions could carry five or six miles is unappetizing. What should concern us, too, is that the waste coming to the site, where the road is prone to flooding, won’t be just from this county. “And when it floods the lorries will try and go through the village in Ford,” worries Dawn, another resident. It does seem a little weird to build it in what I believe is a flood

plain, but stranger things have already happened. With many other countries moving on from incinerators and another in Norfolk just cancelling its contract, the decision to build this on people’s doorsteps – whatever you call it - seems … gastley. And finally Forget carpets, where do all our pets go after love cools? After broken relationships, I mean.

After various friends’ bust-ups I’ve counted one chicken, several dogs and numerous cats. One pal, Philip, had a cat called Did-dums that he said he’d been saddled with after the romance petered out, though he continued to look after Di-dums. Another pal, Gerald, told me his dog kept him sane. It was only thanks to Rusty that he got over the broken heart. Thank goodness we can’t argue over the iTunes collection. Well, they were never yourTunes.

Businesses fed up by A27 need to fill out survey to help fight for improvements BUSINESSES badly affected by congestion along the A27 have been adding their weight to the campaign to improve it. The A27 Action campaign launched a fortnight ago - has already won plenty of support from West Sussex businesses of all different sizes. Evidence has been flooding in from firms voicing their frustrations about how traffic jams affect their trade. They have completed the 10-minute online survey at www.

a27action.co.uk to help the campaign present its case for investment to the Government. There is still time for other businesses to add their voice to the campaign and fill out the survey. West Sussex County Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “We really want to encourage businesses to take the time to fill in this survey. “The more examples we can show of how the A27 restricts our local economy from growing, the stronger our case to lobby the Government.”

Evidence from businesses will continue to be gathered by West Sussex County Council during July and August, with help from business networks, before a business case is handed to the Government in the autumn. The A27 is one of six routes in England being considered for investment by the Government. The Chancellor will announce which of the six schemes are still in the running for investment in his Autumn Statement.

If the A27 is on the shortlist, the Government is expected to indicate what the preferred route for any improvements will look like and how much it would cost. The Government would then determine how much funding can be committed. Visit www.a27action.co.uk and complete the online survey. If you are a resident and support improvements to the A27, you can show your support by ‘liking’ the A27 Action page on Facebook.

New library leads to borrowing bonanza in Midhurst

THE NEW MIDHURST LIBRARY, at Grange Community & Leisure Centre, has seen a significant increase in users since its reopening at the end of March. Statistics have confirmed that user levels in April, May and June were up over 42% compared to the three-month period last year. Items lent from the library have averaged almost 6,000 per month since the reopening, while items lent last month were a 56% increase on June 2013’s tally of 3,653. And following the first meetings of groups and activities for adults, as well as the start of the Summer Reading Challenge, the library is

looking to boost on its impressive start since its redevelopments. Gareth Edmunds, Midhurst Library’s Centre Manager, said: “I am delighted with the new library, particularly as we moved less than four months ago. “Since the move, our regular Monday 2.15pm toddler time for under-fives has continued to be popular, while activities for adults have just started. “Knit and Natter, Book Break and a reading group have all had their first meetings. “Since March 31, the first three months at Midhurst library have seen up to a 50% increase in the

numbers of books, DVDs and story CDs loaned to library borrowers each month. “This success has been with the hard work of our library staff and our fantastic volunteers. “The annual summer reading challenge for primary aged school children has just begun and the Mythical Maze will build on our success through the summer.” With a wide range of books available, along with CD audiobooks, DVDs and free WiFi throughout the building as well as longer opening hours, the rise may also be attributed to Midhurst Library’s new self-service policy.

Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “This is really positive news for Midhurst and our library is proving to be a great addition to what is already an excellent facility in the community. “The change in opening hours has also improved accessibility for people willing to visit the centre, as the window to drop by at a time which suits them is now a lot wider. “The statistics regarding items lent from the library since the reopening speaks for themselves and we hope residents continue to enjoy the centre.”

National News News in Brief • A teenage girl was raped while walking home from a beach party to celebrate the end of the school year. The victim was walking alone down the Wivenhoe Trail, a footpath which runs alongside the River Colne. She and a friend had been to the party in Alresford, Essex, before the attack on Tuesday at 23:30 BST. Essex Police said the attacker ran off when a group of young men heard the girl’s screams for help. The rapist was in his mid or early teens.

• The family of a Newcastle fan who died in a plane crash in Ukraine have flown to The Netherlands as the first planes carrying victims’ bodies arrive. Liam Sweeney and John Alder were travelling to watch Newcastle’s tour of New Zealand when their flight crashed. • A British schoolboy has died on a field trip in Tanzania after suffering a severe allergic reaction, an expedition company has said. Jack Burden, 18, from Harton Technology College in South Shields, Tyneside, received first aid but could not be resuscitated, True Adventure said. The Foreign Office confirmed he died in Tanzania on Tuesday. The firm could not confirm what the source of the allergy was, but said the group had been in a “remote location”. • The vast majority of new broadband customers in the UK are opting out of “child friendly” filters when prompted to install them by service providers. The industry watchdog Ofcom found fewer than one in seven households installed the feature, which is offered by BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media. The filters block pornographic websites, as well as pages promoting self-harm or drug taking. • The former head of Haringey children’s services Sharon Shoesmith has been awarded £679,452 for her unfair dismissal claim. Ms Shoesmith was sacked after a damning report into the 2007 death of Peter Connelly, known as Baby P, who was subjected to months of abuse. • Peaches Geldof died of a heroin overdose, a coroner has ruled. The TV presenter had been a heroin addict and took the substitute drug methadone for two-and-a-half years before her death, the inquest heard. A police search found 6.9g of heroin in her house but there was no indication she had planned to take her own life.

Claudia Lawrence has not been seen since March 2009

A MAN has been arrested as part of the continuing investigation into the murder of Claudia Lawrence. The missing chef, 35, has not been seen since March 2009. North Yorkshire Police said a 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

A large police presence has been at The Acomb pub, on Kingsway, York, since about 08:00 BST. A 59-year-old man held on suspicion of her murder in May remains on bail. A spokesman said: “The man is currently being interviewed in

Campaign to stop Immigration Street filming in Southampton A CAMPAIGN has begun to stop a TV production company from filming a new series on immigration in an area of Southampton. Channel 4 has confirmed Immigration Street – a follow-up to Benefits Street – is being filmed in Derby Road. At a meeting organised by Newtown Residents’ Association (NRA) on Tuesday, residents were urged to refuse to co-operate. Producer Love Productions said it was not aiming to cause division. Benefits Street was a big hit for Channel 4 but was criticised for its portrayal of people living in poverty. Derby Road residents have raised concerns about how the show will portray immigration and stigmatise the area. More than 100 people attended the heated meeting at the Maytree Nursery and Infant School. Nazrul Chaudhery, chairman of the NRA, said people were concerned about being labelled. He said: “It doesn’t matter who goes on it, you’ll be labelled as immigrant or something in that way.” Labour MP Alan Whitehead, whose constituency includes Derby

Road, said: “I think the show is fundamentally misconceived. “I think it’s quite wrong that a company sticks a pin in the map and says ‘that’s Immigration Street’, regardless of the reality of the area, and then does a programme on it. I think they should think again and I hope they will.” Kieran Smith, creative director of Love Productions, told the meeting: “We would never come and film a series in order to cause division, or where there is harmony, cause disharmony. “We’re here to film for six to seven months the lives of the residents of Derby Road. “We’re on Derby Road because it’s an incredibly diverse street with a history of immigration. “Just like on Benefits Street - the reason we were there was because there were a lot of benefits claimants there - but then the programme became about other themes.” Filming began eight weeks ago and more than 30 people have already been interviewed for the series, which is due to be broadcast next year.

custody while searches and forensic enquiries are conducted in relation to the investigation.” Miss Lawrence, who lived in Heworth, was due to start a shift at the University of York on 19 March at 06:00, but failed to turn up. Her 67-year-old father, Peter,

reported her missing the following day. Extensive searches of the area were made, but she was not found and police have since treated her disappearance as murder. Martin Dales, spokesman for Claudia’s father, said: “Peter remains very grateful for all the hard work that North Yorkshire Police are continuing to put into finding Claudia. “It is to be hoped that this is another vital piece in the jigsaw of information that needs to come to the police.” North Yorkshire Police launched a review of the case last year and have carried out new forensic work and searches of Miss Lawrence’s home. A house in the Burnholme area of York was searched following the arrest of the 59-year-old man from York on 13 May. A second property in North Shields, Tyneside, was also searched by officers. The suspect was released on conditional bail which was extended by police last month.

Parent-funded iPad plan criticised

PARENTS have claimed a school is creating a “two-tier” education system by asking them to buy iPads for their children to use in class. The Biggleswade Academy in Bedfordshire wants parents of children in years 5 and 6 to pay up to about £300 for the tablets to “personalise education”. The school said it was optional and parents would not be forced to sign up. But parents have said they feel “under pressure” to spend the money and “bullying has already started”.

Leanne Holt, who has two children in the school, said she agreed tablets had “great educational benefits”, but the school was “very naive if it thought there wasn’t going to be a two-tier education system”. The school said monthly payment options of between £10 and £20 were available and those eligible for free school meals could be helped with up to 80% of the cost. A spokesman said it had seen “real benefits” from its shared tablets and wanted to “take it to the next level”.

Too many ‘F’s’ results in an ‘X’ Kylee Charles Director of PR Consultancy Mindseye Management

Returning from any break away presents challenges with ‘getting back in to the swing of things’ doesn’t it.

I stretched it out for

as long as I could but this week, I climbed back on to that swing. After a few anxious feelings & shuffling papers, it wasn’t long before I found that productive rhythm once more. I’ve enjoyed catching up with all of our clients, re-visiting what their challenges are and structuring a schedule for what next month has in store. It’s important to me that I get on well with them, which is of course helped by the fact that they

After exchanging pleasantries, she brought me up to speed on how the business has been performing whilst I was away. Amongst the changes they’ve made, they’ve had to sack their social media company and although I’m surprised, I agree with her reasons why… “I have worked in the corporate world for many years,” explained Laura. “And run my own business for 3. I am used to negotiations, deals and sweet talking’s of a sales man but there’s something that I’ve noticed recently that I am unsure how to deal with…” “We took on a new social media agency – they were fresh, vibrant and young; a bunch of lads in their 20s straight out of university. They knew the internet back to front and they knew how to create those much needed conversations to get our new business out there. There was just one problem in our area will also get at least one newspaper delivered to them whether they are in the City Centre, a town or village, an industrial business park or a lone café on a country road. their style. After just a few weeks working with them, I found myself shocked when the Account Manager began to swear mid conversation, or share personal information that would usually be saved for friendships. I’m just not used to it. Perhaps it’s surprised me with just how conservative I am but is it really conservative to expect professionalism? His manner affected my trust and I was just not certain I could continue to rely on the approach I was witnessing.” “Inevitably when you work with someone for long enough conversations can become friendly ‘how was your weekend?’ That sort of thing. But where’s the boundary? I know in my business as a therapist I never bring my personal life into the clinic - the hour someone has with me is 100% them and I pride myself on that. Needless to say the swearing and the personal stories that felt a

little too familiar have resulted in me cancelling our contract with this agency. On reflection, they didn’t deliver and for me, their behaviour attributed to their results. Maybe this is why the issue became so obvious? Who knows….” After a moment of hoping Laura wasn’t trying to make me aware of any of my own ‘over-familiarity’, it made me realise how interesting and current this topic is. Just when did business become so personal? Is this how business is done these days, with an over-familiar, casual approach? As much as I’d love to have overheard one of these conversations, for comedic value, that’s where it stops. Shouldn’t we all work hard to ensure the professional degree of separation remains, after all, word-of-mouth is a powerful force to be reckoned with and loose lips aren’t an attribute.

GRANTS totalling £35,000 from West Sussex County Council have seen 14 apprentices taken on at businesses across the county. The authority invested the money into a unique West Sussex Higher Apprenticeship Grant Scheme, which closed at the end of June 2014. The grant was open to small and medium businesses to bid to, as well as large organisations. Grants were awarded to seven companies which used the money to contribute towards the salaries of 14 Higher Apprentices aged 18-24 in sectors ranging from construction to care. Brian Pellett, General Manager at Real Time DC, one of the first organisations to receive funding said: “It is important to the growth of our business that we have the correct mix of Sales and Technical skills. “The Higher Apprentice Scheme allowed a good mix of external technical training we could not provide whilst receiving our training on products and customer skills. The award of VAN theHIRE grant provided the encouragement we needed to invest.” One of West Sussex County Council’s key priorities is championing the economy, including encouraging more apprentices into

businesses across West Sussex. The apprenticeships’ funding was made available as part of the Council’s overall Be the Business programme, to support new and established businesses to grow. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “Higher Apprenticeships help employers meet their need for highlevel skills as well as giving people the opportunity to further develop their skills in the workplace. “We are delighted that West Sussex County Council funding has

contributed to providing 14 young people with the higher-level skills that employers need.” Visit these pages for more information, opportunities and guidance: www.apprenticeships.org.uk www.apprenticemakers.org.uk www.westsussex.gov.uk/ your_council/news_and_events/ news/2014_archive/july_2014/ boost_for_local_businesses_ann. aspx www.bethebusiness.org/grants

Do you need some extra work? Local businesses are needed by award winning Chichester business referral group IF YOU are looking for some extra business then look no further. Your luck could be in if you run one of these businesses. A local Chichester business referral group has some space for new members.

“It sounds crazy but as a group of businesses we have work that we would like to place with quality local suppliers yet currently this work is going out of the area,” said Paul Beard the group’s Membership Secretary, adding “it’s not stuffy, in fact it is great fun – last week we placed £13,000 of business for our members and we now have a window for some trades and professions to join us.” “It works so well because it’s very simple. We meet in the morning over breakfast, once a week so everyone can be back to work for 9.00am,” added Chairman Jeremy Doe of Sussex Hardwood Workshops. “It’s a bit like having your own unpaid marketing team working for you, because fellow members give out your cards and refer your business to people they meet. They do this because they know you are doing exactly the same for them.” This Chichester business

referral group is now ranked as the second fastest growing group of its type in the whole of Sussex. It’s simple and it works! In the Sussex region members have passed over 32,000 referrals that have turned into £13,380,000 in the last 6 months alone! - Yes you read that right - they try not to keep it a secret but still very few businesses know of them. John Hollands of RWP Group, a founder member 14 years ago, said: “As a marketing agency we advise businesses every day on how to get the best out of their marketing budget, membership of this group represents a great return on investment.” Only one representative from each trade or profession can join the group. At present the group are actively seeking new members who they can pass work to. Are you working in any of the following categories? Office Supplies, Garden Maintenance, Carpet/ Flooring, Estate Agent/Letting Agent, Bookkeeper Car Valet, Florist, Fire Safety, Web Design, Architect, Surveyor,

Physiotherapist, Pest Control, Medical Insurer, Photographer, Travel Agent, Locksmith, Caterer

If you represent any of the above businesses, have the capacity to take on more business, and are able to go to a weekly meeting 6.45am – 8.30am and have £10 for breakfast then we would be delighted to meet you. Act now before your trade or profession gets locked-out of the group and come along to our next meeting, to register your interest contact Membership Secretary Paul Beard. CHICHESTER HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, on Kingsham Road, Chichester, believes in offering all their pupils the highest quality of education in a safe, happy and caring environment. In order to enhance their learning experiences and the environment in which they are taught, Clare Skinner, Head of Learning for Year 7 at the school, set about building something a little different, a classroom outdoors. With the help of local timber and builders merchants, Covers, Clare was able to complete this project ready for the new school year ahead. On Friday 18 July, a week before the school breaks up for the summer holidays, the outdoor classroom was officially opened. The Mayor of Chichester, Councillor John Hughes, kindly visited the school to cut the tape and invited pupils, parents and staff into the

area to learn more about Clare’s project. Guests were also treated to afternoon tea in the garden after the opening. Clare said: “I wanted the girls to be able to learn in the outdoors

and experience nature at the same time. I used an 80m stretch of land in the grounds of the school, which wasn’t being used, and included a performance area, snug for reading, nature area, vegetable pots, a classroom area, orchard and benches amongst the flowers. “I would like the whole school to make use of the area in whatever way they can. It might be incorporating what can be found in the nature area into on-going classwork or it might simply be to hold a class outside in the nice weather. “When I began the project I realised I needed quite a lot of materials to complete all the areas, so I wrote to Covers, as I knew they were a family run organisation with a depot just down the road from our school. “Martyn Beck, the Chichester depot’s Manager, was great. He got in touch and was very helpful advising us on what were the best materials to use. Covers has helped

project for Chichester High School for Girls. It’s fantastic that I was able to help share the expertise and knowledge of staff at Covers in order to improve facilities at the school. The outdoor classroom is such a good idea encouraging children to get outdoors and learn about where they live.” Continued Clare: “On behalf of everyone at Chichester High School for Girls, I would like to thank Covers for their support, allowing us to complete our project within what was quite a limited budget. I would also like to thank the Mayor of Chichester for officially opening our classroom. “Finally I must thank the parents who helped the project too. They really were the pinnacle in the construction of the whole area. We are very much looking forward to returning to school after the summer holidays and beginning to use the facility.”

Hercules(12A) Running time: 98 mins Director: Brett Ratner Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Rufus Sewell, Ian McShane, John Hurt, Joseph Fiennes

Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules battles terrifying foes in a fresh and visceral new take on this legendary action hero. Having completed his character-

defining twelve labours, tormented Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) has become a battle-weary warrior who leads a band of mercenaries. The King of Thrace (John Hurt) calls upon him to help end a bloody civil conflict by defeating a savage, brutal warlord. Now Hercules must find the strength to become a hero again. But this will not simply be a battle against a formidable enemy, but a fight for his very soul! ‘Fast & Furious’ star

Dwayne Johnson underwent eight months of serious working out for his role as the legendary Greek demi-god tough guy. ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ director Brett Ratner brilliantly conjures up such mythological enemies as the hydra and gargantuan boar, while rooting his ‘Hercules’ in heart-pounding, grittily realistic warfare. Chichester welcomes the 2nd annual Ride2Chi bike fest

The display of motorcycles along East Street towards Eastgate Square, towards The Cross and lined up North Street in 2013

CHICHESTER CITY CENTRE PARTNERSHIP has announced that the second spectacular Ride2Chi event will take place on Sunday 27th July 2014, when up to 250 motorcycles will be parked up in the city centre for all to see and enjoy, raising awareness of road safety, with proceeds going to the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance. This year’s free event, organised in conjunction with Chichester Chamber of Commerce & Industry and sponsored by Chandlers BMW Brighton is expected to attract several hundred motorbikes which will descend on Northgate car park, Chichester on Sunday 27th July. At 12.00, 250 of them will ride in

convoy down North Street and along East Street, lining up on one side of these roads, where they will be on display for two hours for the public to view. Any additional motorbikes are invited to remain parked up in Northgate car park for the duration of the event and at 2.00pm, the motorbikes will spectacularly ride off the precinct, in convoy, out of the City. The three aims of the event are to raise money for the Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance; to promote road safety for motorcyclists and drivers, and to create a fantastic free spectacle and event for the city. Kim Long, City Centre Manager, comments: “We were delighted

by how many people came into Chichester last year to see the bikes and had reports from shops and eateries that their takings were up on the same day! So we were very happy when Chichester Chamber of Commerce approached us to repeat the event this year. It’s a fabulous free event for families who otherwise might not be able to get to Goodwood or other events and it certainly makes a novel addition for Sunday shoppers, visitors and tourists!” Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance receives no statutory funding and relies almost entirely upon the generosity of the public to keep this vital service going. They will be at the Market Cross collecting donations towards the £5 million needed each year to keep these lifesaving helicopters flying. The Ride2Chi has the full support of BikeSafe and the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership. The partnership will be displaying police, fire rescue and SERV motorcycles (emergency blood and donor bikes) and will be giving help and advice on improving road safety with initiatives such as the Biker Down! workshops, developed after extensive research into the causes of injuries and collisions. More information about Ride2Chi can be found at www.chichesterbid. co.uk and on Twitter at @Ride2Chi.

Mixing alcohol with energy drinks makes us want to drink more

COMBINING energy drinks with alcoholic beverages may strengthen a person’s urge to continue drinking, a new study suggests. Australian researchers found that young adults who consumed an energy drink mixed with alcohol had a small to moderate increase in their desire to keep drinking compared with people who drank alcohol alone.

“This is an important finding because it provides evidence of a mechanism through which energy drinks may increase binge drinking, and consequently, alcohol-related harm among young people,” said study author Rebecca McKetin, who leads the substance use research group at The Australian National University in Canberra. Those harms might include

greater alcohol intoxication, and an increased risk of automobile accidents, as well as drinkingrelated injuries from fights or falls, McKetin said. Blending an energy drink with alcohol is a popular trend among college students, leading researchers to wonder about the potential dangers associated with it. For the study, researchers recruited 75 young adults in Australia, ages 18 to 30. Half the group was given a cocktail containing about 2 ounces of vodka, 8.5 ounces of a lime-flavored energy drink and nearly 7 ounces of a pineapple coconut fruit drink, while the rest of the participants had a cocktail containing the same amount of vodka and fruit drink mixed with 8.5 ounces of soda water. Before receiving their cocktails, all the participants completed a questionnaire asking them to describe their typical use of alcohol, caffeine and drugs. Ten minutes after sipping their cocktail, the participants filled out a post-test questionnaire rating the drink’s

taste and its effects on them, and then took a breathalyzer test to measure their blood alcohol concentrations. The findings are published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. Caffeine and sweetness The results showed that young people who drank alcohol plus the energy drink liked the taste better, had lower average blood alcohol levels, and also reported a greater urge to keep drinking than those given the alcohol-only cocktail. As for the possible mechanism behind the increased desire to drink more when combining energy drinks with alcohol, McKetin identified two potential culprits: caffeine and sugar. She explained that the sugary additives in energy drinks contribute to their palatability, and may increase people’s desire to keep drinking. Another reason could be the caffeine content, which might bring out alcohol’s stimulant effects and is strongly related to how much people like alcohol.

“In our study, we were unable to confirm whether or not people’s desire to keep drinking was due to the sweetness of the energy drink, or the caffeine that it contained,” McKetin told LiveScience. A similar study done in the U.S. suggested it was the caffeine rather than the sweetness that caused the effect, she said. Some

other

unanswered

questions are whether and to what extent combining energy drinks with alcohol increases how much alcohol people actually subsequently drink, McKetin said. Researchers can’t assume that a person’s self-reported urge to keep drinking would result in consuming more alcohol in a real-life situation, she said. Factors such as whether someone has the money to spend on buying more alcohol, if their friends are still drinking, and whether that individual needs to drive home or go to work the next day, can all play a role in the decision to keep drinking, or stop, McKetin said.

We’ll keep this brief: Are you New weight loss workshops are launched ready for VAGINA pants?

YES, YOU read that right - knickers with graphic images of the female anatomy have been created by a young British artist. Sexy kecks these ain’t... We never thought Bridget Jones would have a competitor in the dodgy knickers department but we were wrong. Young art student Eleanor Beth Haswell has created a pair of

VAGINA-printed pants. Yes you read that right - underwear with a detailed graphic of the female anatomy printed on them. While we’re not entirely convinced by the bold pants - give us a pair of lace French knickers any day - they could make a daring addition to your lingerie drawer. The science-class worthy knickers are part of 18-year-old Eleanor’s “Why are you so afraid of your own anatomy?” collection and follow on from Free The Nipple’s boob bikini. While they may not be the sexiest pants you’ll ever wear, they do provide a useful insight into the female reproductive system, clearly labelling the ovaries, cervix and fallopian tubes. Those brave enough to don the pants may be interested to know that they come with an accompanying bra, which details the anatomy of the breasts. They’re bold, brazen and breaking boundaries - but would you wear them?

THE CHICHESTER WELLBEING TEAM is running a new programme of Wellbeing Weight Loss Workshops to help residents lose weight, get fit and lead a healthier lifestyle. If you want to get off the diet roller coaster and lose weight slowly through healthy eating, then the new Wellbeing Weight Loss Workshops offer the perfect solution. The workshops cover a wide variety of topics from challenging the myths about diets, right through to how stress and lack of sleep may affect weight gain. The 12 week programme is designed to help people lose weight and keep it off. The new workshops will be held at: · Swanfield Community Centre in Chichester Wednesday 23rd July 1 – 2.30pm · Westgate Leisure Centre in Chichester Tuesday 5th August 7 – 8.30pm

· The Selsey Centre Thursday 14th August 11.15am – 12.30pm · The Witterings Medical Centre Tuesday 26th August 1 – 2.30pm · The Grange in Midhurst on Wednesday 3rd September 9.30 – 10.30am

The workshops run for 12 weeks and include a weekly weigh-in and group discussion. Brian Clear has lost over two stone through the programme. She said: “The Wellbeing Weight Loss Workshops are different to other weight loss groups. They educate you to be healthy minded and dispel all the myths about dieting. The workshops teach you about nutrition and I now eat really well – and I’m honestly not hungry! I’ve tried foods that I never would have thought of trying before and food just tastes better now! The good thing is that you can still have the odd treat. You are encouraged to follow the 80:20 rule, which means 80% of what we eat should be healthy and

20% can still be a treat.” Councillor

Health benefits of Peanuts

Schools out for summer! Yipee! So, hopefully we have a beautiful, warm summer holiday ahead of us. Lovely beach days and picnics in sight! Us parents are always looking for healthy snacks for our children and one of this summer’s favourite health benefiting snacks, that has possibly more goodness than you realise is peanuts! I am not talking about the salted or dry roasted versions, but the natural un-tampered with type. Peanuts are rated up there in the top three cancer fighting nuts, sharing the top spots with walnuts and pecans. Many studies are proving these little snacks can reduce tumors or even prevent them in the first place. A handful of peanuts pack a serious punch of health enhancing properties. So whatever your age, size or gender, I would suggest including these in your everyday diet for the following reasons: Peanuts are super rich in energy and contain health benefiting nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins that are essential for optimum health.

Denise Kelly Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist They compose sufficient levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids especially oleic acid. This helps to lower LDL or “bad cholesterol” and increases HDL or “good cholesterol” level in the blood which we all need! These nuts are a good source of dietary protein compose and fine quality amino acids that are essential for growth and development which most people

these days are deficient in. Peanuts contain high concentrations of poly-phenolic antioxidants, primarily p-coumaric acid. This compound has been thought to reduce the risk of stomach cancer by limiting the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines in the stomach. In other words toxins that shouldn’t be there! Peanuts are an excellent source of resveratrol, another polyphenolic antioxidant. Resveratrol has been found to have protective function against cancers, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease,

Stress and anxiety relief CAN YOU imagine your life without stress? Any kind of stress leaves its mark on your mind and body. Even positive events such as a wedding or the birth of a child bring with them some stress and anxiety. Acupuncture is a proven and effective treatment for stress relief

and is becoming increasingly popular. Through unblocking channels with needles, the Qi in the body is able to flow freely in order to restore harmonious balance in the body. So you will find reprieve from physical symptoms, such as tense muscles, muscular pains

Walnuts and Pecans are amazing Functional foods bring specific benefits to the body when consumed on a regular basis.Walnuts and pecans, and other forms of nuts, fall into this category because of their ability to keep the heart healthy. This is largely due to their fat content. They both contain unsaturated fat, which has been known to lower cholesterol levels. Walnuts and pecans are similar in overall nutrient value, and both make good additions to your diet. Alzheimer’s disease, and viral/ fungal infections. Resveratrol reduce stroke risk by altering molecular mechanisms in the blood vessels and by increasing production of the vasodilator hormone, nitric oxide. Peanuts are an excellent source of vitamin E containing about 8 g per100 g. Vitamin E is a powerful lipid soluble antioxidant which helps maintain the integrity of cell membrane of mucus membranes and skin by protecting from harmful oxygen free radicals, which means the bad stuff can get out and the good stuff can be absorbed better.

They are packed with many important B-complex groups of vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6, and folates. 100 g of peanuts provide about 85% of RDI of niacin, which contribute to brain health and blood flow to brain, so are essential for all ages. Peanuts are a fabulously rich source of minerals like copper, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium. Peanuts are the perfect snack to assist with perfect health.

Alternatively, acupressure/ Chinese massage can be applied to people who have a fear of needles. However, acupressure (massage) is often applied to clients after acupuncture in order to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. In fact, in some cases, acupuncture being used to treat one condition can actually help detect another, more severe illness that has not been previously identified. In such cases, acupuncture aids in early diagnosis and treatment. Remember, acupuncture/ acupressure is just one method of relieving stress. It’s also important to learn positive and productive ways to cope with stress on a daily

basis, thereby combining them to help you enjoy a happier and healthier life. Dr Feng Wang is an associate of the ATCM and has been practising his profession for over 20 years. EVENT DATA RECORDERS (EDRs), often known as ‘black boxes’, could become critical in further improving work-related road safety. The majority of new cars and some vans and other vehicles are already fitted with the technology, which is typically located in the airbag control module, but there is no mandatory requirement or functionality standardisation. Data is recorded during a road crash and for a short time,

usually less than a minute, before and after the collision, and is typically accessed by the vehicle manufacturer. The European Commission (EC) has asked transport research consultancy TRL to undertake a study on the deployment of EDRs in cars, light commercial vehicles, HGVs and buses and coaches to “improve road safety and access to justice”. TRL will send its report to the EC by the end of August.

Key issues that need to be decided include: • Whether EDRs should be mandatory in all vehicles or certain categories of vehicles • What data should be recorded • Who has access to the data • Who owns the data Many company car fleets already use journey data recorders to monitor driver behaviour and numerous studies highlight employees driving more safely and sympathetically as a result.

The celebrity riders will be decked out in bespoke racing silks created by renowned fashion designers including; Vivienne Westwood, Sarah Burton, Jasmine Guinness, Bella Freud and Beulah. The jockeys and designers will be
