Cliffhanger presidential election race in PHL begins By Karl Malakunas

Manila, Philippines | AFP | Tuesday 2/9/2016 − A cliffhanger race to lead the Philippines began Tuesday with emotion-charged rallies by a dead movie star’s adopted daughter, a politician who brags about killing criminals and other top contenders. The three-month election campaign got under way with four aspirants standing a genuine chance of succeeding popular President Benigno Aquino, who is limited by the constitution to a single term.

The Philippines has endured a turbulent democracy since emerging from the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship three decades ago − with coups, corruption, celebrities and violence dominating politics. Poe admits weight loss, but says she’s healthy TOLEDO City, Cebu, Feb 10 (Mabuhay) − Senator Grace Poe on Wednesday admitted that she is losing weight, but assured that she remains in good health and fit for the election campaign season. Poe, who noticeably looked gaunter at the official start of the campaign period than in 2015, attributed her weight loss to her failure to catch forty winks a night. She said she only manages to sleep for an average of four to five hours in recent months as the election fever heats up. “Ginawa lang talaga siguro akong ganito ng Diyos na ‘pag kulang ang tulog ko, papayat ako talaga,” she told reporters.
