BREADTH [ D E P T H ] SUCCESS

Why Hite? Here’s some of the reasons we hear from our students and alums. Best of both worlds: An art institute at a liberal arts university. Immerse yourself in art while exploring other disciplines that also interest you. The broader education makes you a more well-rounded individual and ultimately more employable after college.

Creative city:

Lots to do: At UofL you’ll never be bored. In

Visiting artists and lectures: We

addition to a wide range of classes, there are student organizations, intramurals, and plenty of facilities to keep you busy on campus when you aren’t in class.

bring in visiting artists in various disciplines every semester — typically 10 to 12 a year. You’ll learn about art beyond the classroom and attend workshops with artists who will challenge you and broaden your skills.

Small class size: More opportunity to engage with instructors and learn. Studio foundations classes are limited to 20 students; 300 and 500-level classes average 12 to 15 students.

Breadth: 10 Studio Art or Design areas – Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Ceramics, Fibers/ Mixed Media, Glass, Sculpture, Communication Art & Design, Interior Design – plus Art History.

Depth: Studio majors work cross media or concentrate and take up to 30 hours in one studio/design area; we also offer more than 50 classes in five different areas of Art History. Friends for life:

Work closely with other students as focused on art as you are. Form lifetime friendships with a diverse group of peers. The collaborative classroom environment and supportive peer group makes time spent in class more enjoyable and everyone’s work stronger.

Louisville, KY — a creative community that is extremely supportive of young emerging artists. Monthly Trolley Hops with gallery openings in the East Market/Downtown area, and the Frankfort Avenue area.

Facilities: The studio art program is located both on and off-campus. Schneider Hall houses foundations, drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, graphic design, fibers, and interior design. Sculpture and ceramics are in the HPES/Studio Arts Building and the glass program is housed off-campus in the Cressman Center for Visual Art in downtown Louisville. Studio space is available for BFA students. The art history program, together with the Visual Resources Center and the Print Collection, is on campus in Lutz Hall. Plus the Bridwell Art Library and our outstanding galleries — both invaluable resources — are also in Schneider Hall.

Flexibility: Present an idea and your professor works with you to make it happen. Faculty and staff are here to help you reach your professional goals. Economical:

With UofL’s affordable tuition costs, chances are you won’t be paying off enormous students loans for the next 10 years!

Faculty as mentors: Work one-on-one

Scholarships and travel grants:

with faculty who are professional artists and publishing art historians and gain both insight into the field and an idea of what to expect once you graduate.

Departmental merit scholarships available in addition to other University-wide scholarships. Plus departmental travel grants for trips both in the U.S. and abroad.

Internships:

Love sports? Plenty to cheer about!

Many Hite students, especially in the design programs, participate in internships. This real world experience puts you a step ahead in the job market when you graduate.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH Open Doors encourages and inspires over 2,000 participants each year from underserved populations by bringing art enrichment experiences and classes to at-risk youth, refugees and immigrants, victims of abuse and more. Projects are tailored to meet speciďŹ c needs of each population and serve to enrich not only the individual participants, but the community as a whole. Our in-school programs support and connect to core academic content, engaging students in new and innovative ways. Our communitybased programs, including after-school and summer offerings, provide enriching, hands-on art experiences to underserved populations. louisvillevisualart.org/community-outreach

VISUAL ART EDUCATION Louisville Visual Art encourages, inspires, and develops the next generation of creative leaders by providing intensive, in-depth art experiences to over 1,100 students each year through a variety of programming. Our Children’s Fine Art Classes (CFAC) engage talented and motivated students in grades 4-8, The Academy of LVA prepares high school students to begin a career in the arts, and our summer camps inspire creativity in students ages 7-14. Classes immerse students in studio practices in drawing, painting, and mixed media; art history; critiquing skills; and aesthetics with a focus on encouraging all of our students to grow, improve and evolve as artists and creative problem solvers. louisvillevisualart.org/visual-art-edu

ARTIST SUPPORT As a creative hub now established in the Portland Neighborhood, LVA is dedicated to engaging and encouraging artists through programming such as Artebella, Open Studio Weekend, PUBLIC radio, and weekly calls for artists. Most recently, Louisville Visual Art has been developing the Mural Art Program (MAP) to beautify and inspire the city, raise awareness of art within the community, and to directly support local artists. With corporate partners such as Kroger, we have already overseen ten murals created and installed in 2015 and look forward to over twenty new murals coming in the next twenty-four months! louisvillevisualart.org/artist-support
