The Official Magazine of the River Walk

The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts

Welcome toSan Antonio!

They say “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” if that is true, this issue is sure to please everyone with the variety of art we have featured. We start with outdoor Art Installations in the Museum Reach of the river walk; these installations are both visual and auditory. Next we move into performing arts and give you a peek inside Downtown Theaters including the brand new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. We also caught up with three of San Antonio’s Talented Artists including Gini Garcia of Garcia Art Glass- you can visit her studio to watch her and her team create blown glass masterpieces. If you are on a budget, check out the schedule of Free Museum Days. There are also plenty of Art Walks and Art Leagues in the surrounding area but make sure to check the dates and event times before you start driving. Last, I encourage you to see my favorite piece of art currently in San Antonio- The SAGA at Main Plaza. It is a 24 minute video projection that covers the façade of the historic San Fernando Cathedral; it is breathtaking. I hope you find your favorite while in town and when you do, write me a note and tell me about it!

Bienvenidos a San Antonio!

River Walk

Museum Reach Art Displays BY: TOM DEIBEL One of San Antonio’s most popular tourist destinations is the famous River Walk. It draws crowds of millions every year because of its history, great food, and nightlife. Back in 2009, our water walkway was lovingly adorned with a series of public art installations. These art displays can be found in the Museum Reach portion of the River Walk, the art installations reach from beautiful to whimsical. A number of artists were commissioned to create these wonderful installations along the Museum Reach trail. The Museum Reach is separated into two sections: the Urban Segment and the Park Segment. The Urban Segment stretches from Lexington Avenue to Josephine Street. It allows access to the San Antonio Art Museum and the Pearl Brewery Center -- a former brewery and stables that were transformed into one of San Antonio’s premier cultural and culinary destinations. The Park Segment runs for a little over two miles from Josephine Street to Hildebrant Avenue. You can find the Witte Museum, Brackenridge Park, and San Antonio Zoo off of is section. When you first find your way into the Museum Reach section of the River Walk, you’ll be greeted by a series of dancing colored lights. You don’t need to be alarmed--you did not eat some bad fish tacos...you’ve just reached the first of the 2009 Artworks Installations. With the use of plexiglass and LEDs, British artist, Martin Richman dazzles our senses with Shimmer Field. Shimmer Field was Richman’s first public art project in the United States and San Antonio is proud to give it a home. The cool breeze allows the painted glass to dangle and sway which in turn gives off an ever changing display of colors and light. Underneath the twin underpasses of McCullough and Brooklyn you’ll see the artwork of local San Antonian, Stuart Allen. His sculptures 29° 25’ 57 and 29° 26’ 00 are a minimalist fan’s dream. They are simple and beautiful and make you dance the line of appreciating art and applauding architecture. While walking or floating by both sculptures they give an intriguing optical illusion of a transforming pattern. Today, you’ll see evidence that New York artist, Mark Schlesinger has moved to San Antonio by his public art displays all over the city. However one of his first San Antonio pieces is the next stop on the Museum Reach tour. For Under the Over, Schlesinger used 12 RIO Magazine

concrete as its canvas to paint on. He adds light-giving color to the underside of the overpass of 9th Street and the stone benches that would normally hardly offer embellishing decoration. Under the Over allows normally drab structures to dance. You can feel free to when you see it, as well. If you’ve had enough of all these colors and lights, then San Fransisco artist William Fontana offers you a brief respite from all the visuals with his addition to the Museum Reach: Sonic Passage. This work of art is one of Fontana’s few permanent works. He is known internationally for his experiments in sound art. Sonic Passage can be found along the river on W. Jones Avenue and Avenue B. Fontana recorded a series of founds that can be found along the San Antonio River for his audio installation to the River Walk. The distinctive combination of man-made sounds, birds, frogs, and river water evoke a oneness with the city and it’s cohabitation with nature. Perhaps the most famous of the River Walk art installations is Donald Lipski’s F.I.S.H. This smile-inducing piece consists of school of sunfish flying above the river and under the I-35 overpass at Camden Street. Lipski is a Philadelphia artist created 25 seven-foot fish to float above the river while the native long-eared sunfish swim below. While the sculpture is fun during the day, it’s at night when they become truly magical. The fiberglass fish begin to glow and looking at the beautiful reflections in the water is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. The final stop on the River Walk art tour is The Grotto by artist Carlos Cortes. Cortes works in Faux Bois concrete. He’s crafted a cave reminiscent of the Natural Bridge Caverns just outside of the city. Visitors can walk inside, and admire the man-made waterfall that splashes nearby. Benches and lights are also carved directly into the concrete making parts this piece feel almost eerily natural. All of these wonderful additions to the city are because of the River Walk Improvement Project which is looking to expand/ restore/ and enhance a total of 13 miles along the San Antonio River. There is still artwork in the words to add to our beautiful Museum Reach section of the River Walk. The beauty will only grow and thrive from here! With all of the walkways, bike trails, and pocket parks along the river, you’re sure to find a serene view. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Had Boudro’s been serving Blackened Prime Rib, fresh Guacamole made tableside and Prickly Pear Margaritas back in 1836, the King of the Wild Frontier would have left Tennessee sooner. Loved by locals and travelers, Boudro’s is a mecca for great food on the River Walk. Celebrating 40 Years of

Durty Nelly’s It’s time to clean your kilt, grab that Guinness glassware and get your Irish up for a celebration 40 years – and arguably 400 years – in the making. Durty Nelly’s, a fixture on the San Antonio River Walk beneath the Market Street Bridge for four decades, is planning fun and frivolity the week of September 8th to mark its 40th anniversary. The pub is a replica of the original Durty Nelly’s erected in 1620 as part of the Bunratty Castle in Limerick, Clare County. In memory of 9-11, Durty Nelly’s will donate 10 percent of proceeds from its 40th Anniversary Week to the 100 Club of San Antonio, a nonprofit that helps support dependents of firefighters and law enforcement killed in the line of duty. Durty Nelly’s is designed in the European style pub tradition with two fireplaces, slate floors and stone walls. Even the rules of the pub -- “only two to a stool, no talk of religion or politics and those drinking rum may stand by themselves, preferably near the window” – have been faithfully adopted from the centuries-old Irish tavern. And it wouldn’t be a day or night at Durty Nelly’s without the famed daily piano sing-a-longs, often featuring world-famous piano entertainers Joe Miraglilo and Donald McGaughey. “It’s always a party at Durty Nelly’s, but our Anniversary week promises to be something extra special,” says Brian Getman, director of sales and marketing at Hilton Palacio del Rio and cocoordinator of the 40th anniversary celebration. “We’re combining 28 RIO Magazine

everything we’ve celebrated over 40 years, revisiting the best of the past to create something new.” “We’re particularly excited that pub staff and patrons are able to honor our city’s brave police and firefighters during the 40th Anniversary Week.” Durty Nelly’s 40th Anniversary celebration, Sept. 8-14, will include 40th Anniversary Glassware, T-shirts, Irish beer tastings, a “kilt night” and complimentary name etchings on Guinness glassware. Check www.durtynellyspub.com for an updated calendar of events. Special lunch and dinner offerings (paired with a pint, naturally) pay homage to the pub’s history. Irish lamb stew, corned beef sliders and the famed Irish fries (topped with chopped corned beef, cabbage and cheddar ale sauce) are among the featured items. Satisfy that sweet tooth with Irish cream truffle fudge, Guinness cupcakes, and Irish cream chocolate cheesecake. Want to get some practice being Irish for next St. Patrick’s Day? Join the fun on Wednesday, Sept 10 for “St. Practice Day,” a chance to sample green beer and enjoy all the shell-’em-yourself peanuts you want. Police and firefighter appreciation night is set for Thursday, Sept. 11, with dueling bagpipers and members of the 100 Club of San Antonio in attendance. “Thank Goodness It’s Irish Friday” will get the celebration going into the weekend with a special happy hour, lunch and dinner specials and more. Additional events and giveaways are in the works. For more information about Durty Nelly’s and the 40th anniversary celebration, visit www.durtynellyspub.com.

Well…book yourself a seat at one of our five unique specialty performing arts theaters for some fun entertainment, whether it be dance, music, plays, the opera or more…there is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy. San Antonio’s newest venture is the sparkling, newly-constructed Tobin Center For the Performing Arts. Located in the heart of the city on the Riverwalk leading up to the Museum Reach, what was once our famed Municipal Auditorium now lies this re-developed venue. The original façade of the Auditorium is well-preserved, but within it, a new development has been created, enabling performances of all kinds to thrive and be well-accustomed. The Tobin Center aims to be a versatile, world-class performing arts facility for San Antonio, the seventh largest city in the United States. Featuring a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose 1,759-seat performance hall, a 250-seat studio theater, an outdoor performance plaza connected to the River Walk and a permanent 30 FT video wall and water taxi portal, every detail has been made to accommodate visitors and residents alike. An amazing line-up awaits you this fall, so book your seats now for the upcoming season including the symphony, opera, ballet, concerts, comedy and more. Hot on Tobin’s heels, is The Aztec Theater. Located downtown at the corner of Commerce Street and St. Mary’s Street, this original movie theater built in 1926 has just had an injection of renovation and special funds making this venue now a multi-purpose entertainment facility, special events space, performing arts center, live 32 RIO Magazine

music venue, retail space and more. The 1600+ capacity theater is a notable example of the past. With its impressive exotic theme motif look and feel, it is reminiscent of the motion picture palaces of the 1920s. Vibrantly colored columns, furnishings, murals, sculptures and a two ton chandelier decorate the theater, many of which are authentic reproductions of Meso-American artifacts. Seating has also been removed on the theatre floor and replaced with a tiered riser system that allows the audience to get up close and personal with their favorite performers. Having also joined forces with the Live Entertainment-House of Blues division, the theater will be on the same booking route as Dallas and Houston. This endeavor makes The Aztec Theater, a happening spot for local, national and international acts. On weekend nights, the theater also offers a lounge area before and after concerts with a DJ spinning the latest tunes to get you dancing and enjoying a cocktail in one of their four bars. Delving into our rich Mexican-American past, culture and influences, The Alameda Theater, a city theater, once known as Museo Alameda has undergone renovations, restoration and expansion giving it recognition as a Latino performing arts and film center. This historic venue on Houston Street located in Market Square was originally founded as a Spanish language theater in 1949. In its heyday, The Alameda Theater screened films, hosted variedades, or variety shows, and performers including Mexican film star Pedro Infante, singer Agustín Lara and comedian Cantinflas. With the significant plan to restore the theater to its former

grace, new ideas for the theater entail telling the American Latino story through the eyes of its performers across all art forms. In addition, a newly-built fifty-one foot trap stage (double the size of its predecessor) and production house with all the trimmings including dressing rooms, a loading dock, storage facilities, bathrooms and a mezzanine gallery. Last but not least in San Antonio’s theatrical and architectural history are two highly recognized premier venues for Broadway productions, concerts, comedians and other live events – The Majestic and Charline McCombs Empire Theaters both located downtown and in close proximity. The Majestic Theatre, a city-owned theatre was built in 1929 and designed in a dramatic Spanish Mediterranean and baroque style by Josh Eberson. The theatre is comprised of 2,264 seats and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and is currently home to the San Antonio Symphony and the Broadway Across America San Antonio Series along with a wide variety of concerts and performing arts attractions. Unique to the theatre is its vaulted ceiling which encompasses a “moving sky” that comes to life as stars twinkle and drifting clouds pass overhead. Legendary performers from the past such as Jack Benny, Mickey Rooney, and Bob Hope have performed on stage and within recent months, BB King, Tony Bennett, Loretta Lynn and many others have graced the stage. The theatre was renovated in 1989 with enhanced sound systems and acoustical enhancements allowing The Majestic to be restored in its former glory but with modern updates. Still a much revered theatre in San Antonio, it is still a major player in the performing arts world downtown. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre or more affectionately known as The Empire, also city-owned was built in 1913 on the site of the former Rische’s Opera house in downtown San Antonio. Designed in the style of a European palazzo, the theater first operated as a vaudeville house and a silent and motion talking picture theatre. Operating for approximately sixty-five years, it closed in the late seventies and was re-opened in the late nineties by a local foundation hoping to help renovate and help reclaim its former recognition and status due to a great flood in the twenties. The diverse theatre seats 865 people and has a flexible seating system allowing for theatre style seating, banquet and cabaret seating options. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Empire Theatre is home to a wide variety of performing arts such as intimate musical concerts, children’s theatre, comedy and private use for weddings, seminars, banquets and more. Gene Autry and Roy Rogers have graced the stage along with current acts of Don McLean, Shawn Colvin and David Crosby among others. All of our downtown theatres have a special meaning and significance to San Antonian’s for hosting local, national and international programs and bringing performances to life. Whether it be a blast from the past or a current fan favorite, San Antonio’s downtown theatres have a rich and embedded history deep in our culture and formation of our city and most importantly- downtown. Pick one or pick them all, you surely won’t be disappointed as each theatre has its own special attributes, uniqueness and style and strives to be the best spot for whatever performance you might enjoy. Go soon and go see for yourself as the show must (definitely) go on! www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com RIO Magazine 33

A Piece of Germany on the River Walk By: Nancy Martinez

Starting from the patio tables that were brought in from Germany- approved Oktoberfest tables, Bier Garten is as authentically German as it gets. Terry Corless, CEO of Mad Dogs and Bier Garten, spent more than two years meticulously researching the German culture to bring a true representation of Deutschland to the banks of the San Antonio river.

“We all know that San Antonio has great Mexican food but the German culture is a large part of South Texas history,” said Corless. From their first immigration to Texas in the 1830s, the Germans have remained in small clusters in the south central part of Texas. In 1990, about three-million Texans considered themselves part German. Inspired by this strong German heritage, Corless wanted to break the mold of Tex-Mex bars and create an unforgettable experience. Following his dream, Corless and his team transformed an out-dated rock bar located on the breezy walkway that leads from The Alamo to the River Walk into Bier Garten. Primarily outdoors, Bier Garten offers a unique atmosphere providing not just great food and drink but also entertainment. Every night, large projector screens show 38 RIO Magazine

classic sing-along Karaoke and a caricaturist draws patrons in Lederhosen. During the day, patrons can cool of under the misters and enjoy some people watching on the busy walkway. This September, Bier Garten is producing a true Bavaria-style Oktoberfest fair complete with German bands, party games, and of course- Beer. Bier Garten is serious when it comes to beer. The bar serves over 17 craft beer including brews from the famous Hofbräu München brewery which was founded in 1589 by the Duke of Bavaria. Best of all, Bier Garten is the only bar on the river walk that offers souvenir steins to-go so you can enjoy your beer while strolling along the river walk. The food menu offers perfect snacks to enjoy with a cold beer. Keeping with the German theme, some items include: salted

pretzels (Texas-size), bratwurst sausages with sauerkraut and mustard, and Germanstyle French fries. With great food and drinks plus entertainment, Bier Garten is the perfect spot for fun-loving parties. Bachelor/ Bachelorette parties, birthday parties, and anyone who wants to have a good time will find what they are looking for at Bier Garten. As the Oktoberfest song says “Ein Prosit, ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit!“ - “A Toast, A Toast to Happy Days.“ *Oktoberfest festivities on September 19-21and 27-28. Featuring fun & games, live Bavaria Bands, stein holding contests, Alphorn blowing along with caricaturists, balloon benders and more.

Got Talent Come to the Riverwalk for lunch or dinner, then linger to take in the engaging works of San Antonio’s local artists.

While the restaurants here are an appealing draw, there’s major talent to be found outside of its kitchens as well, if you’re looking. Chefs and mixologists along the Riverwalk are whipping up plates of traditional Tex-Mex and more modern cuisine, plus pushing boundaries with SEGUIN creative cocktails, and you can also find innovative visual art in many mediums as you stroll through this vibrant area. We’ve handpicked a few of the city’s bestloved local artists whose work is on display near the Riverwalk — and shouldn’t be missed. They work in a variety of formats in diverse styles, but in one way or another, all reflect the experience of being a Texan artist giving physical form to their own creative vision.

DEBRA BENDITZ Heavy on symbolism, many of Debra Benditz’s oil paintings represent feminine forms of beauty. She has a working studio in La Villita Historic Arts Village, where her work is always on display. “My oil paintings are a vibrant expression of the feminine,” she says. “I use radiant colors, often found in nature, to interpret eroticism, burgeoning growth, beauty, nature and the human form. I seek to create a visual feast with generous use of vivid colors.” In her professional life, Benditz zig-zagged between working as a culinary consultant, a CEO and an antique rose aficionado before she reinvented herself as a painter. She was

named by Glamour Magazine one of the top 10 working women in America in 1989 for launching a business that supplied pipe to the oil and gas industry. By the time she was 26, it was flourishing. She sold that business to follow her passion for travel. Other pursuits included culinary school and studies in interior design in Scotland, anatomy for artists in Budapest and art in Paris, Trier and Brussels. Benditz says she finds inspiration everywhere she looks. She also appreciates the boldness found among Texans, “especially the spunk and can-do attitude of the cowgirl spirit.” “I select, re-shape and research to create paintings that guide my viewer to the wisdom, strength and beauty of the eternal feminine found inside each one of us,” she says. “As a painter, I’m interested in what my subject matter reveals about my own journey but also what it stirs in the hearts of my audience.” Debra Benditz Art Studios La Villita Historic Arts Village 418 Villita St. 14b, 78205 (512) 588-2606 • debrabenditz.com

GINI GARCIA Garcia Art Glass is all about art in action. Visitors can stop by glass-blower/designer Gini Garcia’s studio to watch her and her

team of fellow glass-blowers make platters, vases, lighting fixtures, chandeliers and more. “Anything made of glass, we can make it,” says her mother, who manages the studio’s business. Garcia Art Glass was founded in 1998. After receiving her B.F.A. in industrial and environmental design, Garcia eventually opened a hot glass design and fabrication center that specializes in the creation of oneof-a-kind blown glass lighting and sculpture, RIO Magazine

including tablescapes and art for the wall. These creations, made to client specifications, range from the functional to the whimsical. CARLA VELIZ Carla Castañeda Bustamante de Veliz is a multitalented artist whose body of work includes painting, sculpture, performance and photography that explore ideas of belonging and identity. Known to push her limits, Veliz has pursued more abstract work, and her portfolio includes paintings incorporating a variety of materials, lighted works on Plexiglas and multimedia works with video components. Veliz’s creative output draws on her life experience and is informed by her duality as a Mexicana living in the United States. She was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, and began exhibiting her work at the age of 10. After winning her first artistic competition at 15, she enrolled at the Art Institute of Houston. In her work, Veliz often draws inspiration from struggle and hardship, both in world events and on our borders, and works these emotions into her pieces. While these themes may be dark, her work suggests optimism.

If you haven’t seen San Antonio’s newest art and historical installation in Main Plaza yet, then you must certainly be missing a beat. Situated in our historic Main Plaza and projected onto the magnificent façade of San Fernando Cathedral, this twentyfour minute video art installation amazes and intrigues with its captivating images, accompanying music and narration of the historical discovery, settlement and development of San Antonio.

This 7,000 square foot projection created by renowned French painter and video artist, Xavier de Richemont is his first outdoor video art installation in the United States. His public installations can be seen in France, Germany, Spain, Morocco, Mexico, Canada and now in our very own Alamo City of San Antonio, Texas. Art Walks and Leagues Worth the Trip By Mauri Elbel

It’s no secret that San Antonio is home to a thriving arts scene. Galleries and museums abound in this city, and an abundance of local, regional and international art can be found just beyond its parameters. One of the most fun and festive ways to soak in the creativity flourishing in this area is by attending a nearby art walk or event. We’ve rounded up five conveniently-located art walks and leagues worthy of a visit. First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg Upcoming dates: 9/5, 10/3, 11/7 and 12/5 www.ffawf.com If you have been wanting to take a trip to Fredericksburg, you now have 15 more reasons. First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg, taking place on the first Friday of each month, provides an opportunity to view diverse works showcased by 15 participating art galleries while enjoying wine from local award-winning Hill Country wineries Becker Vineyards, Grape Creek Vineyards and Torre De Pietra. First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg begins at 10 a.m. and galleries extend their hours until 8 p.m., allowing ample time to visit each one. “Fredericksburg is quickly becoming one of the top art destinations in the country,” says Jill Holland, First Friday Art Walk Fredericksburg liaison. “We are now home to 15 fine art galleries and many more destinations that www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

are selling and promoting the arts.” Loved by locals and visitors alike, the event provides participants the opportunity to wander through the Historic Shopping District from gallery to gallery, tasting local wines along the way while perusing a fabulous lineup of locally and nationally acclaimed art. Demos, art talks, meet-and-greet sessions with the artists, opening receptions and more take place throughout various art walks––visit the website for a schedule posted the week of each event.

Second Saturday in Boerne Upcoming dates: 9/13, 10/11, 11/8, 12/13 www.secondsaturdayartandwine.com Boerne, sitting just 30 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio, brims with art––and one of the best times to explore this charming German town nestled in the Hill Country is

during the second Saturday of each month. Second Saturday in Boerne has been dubbed the “Best Art Walk in Texas,” but come check out the art and wine event to be the judge yourself. An amalgam of local, regional and national art wrapped up into a free public event, Second Saturday in Boerne takes place on the second Saturday of each month from 4 to 8 p.m., beckoning art lovers with with a diverse array of works, complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres. “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to come out and see all the art Boerne has to offer,” says Amy Niederhauser, co-owner of COSAS, one of the four participating art galleries along with Carriage House Gallery, J.R. Mooney Galleries and Texas Treasures Fine Art. Each of the four galleries offers a distinctively different experience, displaying award-winning art RIO Magazine

by local and national artists. During Second Saturdays, participants can visit each gallery on foot or snag a free ride on the locally-owned “Shabby Bus,” a remodeled shuttle bus outfitted with Moroccan lanterns and a funky tin roof. The art and wine walk has been going on for eight years, often drawing more than 300 visitors to the galleries. “We get a lot of people from all over the Hill Country––from Austin, the Valley, San Antonio, and those vacationing here looking for something to do,” says Niederhauser. “It is just something fun to do–– it’s a lively, very social way to enjoy art.”

Pleasanton Second Saturday Art Walk Upcoming dates: 10/11, 11/8, 12/13 discoverpleasantontx.com/art-walk-gallery Conveniently located on U.S. Highway 281 just 30 miles south of San Antonio, downtown Pleasanton transforms into an artsy hot spot on the second Saturday of each month. The monthly art walk began in August 2012 as a way to promote the arts in this town, says Ann Salas, founder of Pleasanton’s Second Saturday Art Walk and owner of Art on Main. “I wanted to bring art and culture to Pleasanton––there was nothing like this out here before.” Participants can expect a local or visiting artist each month at the family-friendly event as well as various vendors, boutique sales, kids activities and themed contests. While the event won’t take place in August or September due to the hot weather, folks seeking a fun-filled art experience should head out for October and November’s second Saturday events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on December from 3 to 6 p.m. for “Ice Fights” which will position two ice-carving artists against each other in competition to create the most amazing ice sculpture.

New Braunfels Art League

www.newbraunfelsartleague.org The New Braunfels Art League, located in the historic Plumeyer Building at 239 W. San Antonio St., is a gallery of Texas Hill Country artists featuring fine art in various mediums that offers art classes and workshops to the public. The building houses three galleries, classrooms and artist studios in more than 8,000 square feet of space. The New Braunfels Art League offers year-round art classes for children and adults, workshops and free demonstrations every month––all of which are open to the public. “We feel that New Braunfels’ location between San Antonio and Austin provides the unique and wonderful opportunity to bring art lovers from both these large cities to the gallery, as well as easy access to any national visitors,” says Barbara Blaschke, president. “In 2013 we had visitors from all over Texas, 47 other states and 21 foreign countries.” Free art demonstrations occur at 2 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month––check the website for more information before each event.

San Antonio Art League

www.saalm.org The San Antonio Art League, organized on March 13, 1912, is the oldest art league in San Antonio with a mission of maintaining an art museum in order to preserve and exhibit its collection of local and regional art and to promote art by means of exhibitions, lectures and other related activities. Located inside the building that was originally a carriage house constructed in 1897 in the King William Historical Area and Art Center in San Antonio, the museum is open to visitors from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Given its convenient location and impressive collection––since 1912, the Art League Museum has acquired works by Texas artists––it’s definitely worth a visit. “SAAL&M is an all-volunteer organization and has over 400 art pieces in its permanent collection,” says Clarence Fey, executive director. “There is no entrance fee but we will accept free-will donations.” In addition to paintings and water-colors, the collection comprises graphic art, photography, ceramics, sculpture, drawings, silverware, furniture, fabric and wall hangings. Although the focus of the collection is Texas art, fine works by non-Texas artists can also be found.
