The Official Magazine of the River Walk

Publisher Louis Doucette Louis@travelingblender.com Editor Paula Schechter editor@paseodelrio.com Business Manager Vicki Schroder Vicki@travelingblender.com

I remember one of the first questions I received from a friend when I became the editor of RIO magazine and marketing director for Paseo del Rio Association, “Is your job really fun?” Well, yes it is. Not only is it fun, it’s both a privilege and honor to be associated with the River Walk. The heritage of the San Antonio River and the important role it has played in developing our community cannot be disputed. A river that once caused terrible flooding downtown was tamed and developed through the genius of Robert H. H. Hugman, the Father of the River Walk which is now the number tourist destination in the state. Check out the new video about this on the River Walk’s official YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W02KVvLQhPA. Or use keywords: River Walk San Antonio Hugman. The August issue of RIO is filled with stories about the rich heritage of San Antonio. But none is more exciting than the new World Heritage status proclaimed by UNESCO in July 2015 for the five, 18 century missions, in San Antonio. The best known is The Alamo, but also included in World Heritage status are missions Espada, Concepcion, San Jose and San Juan Capistrano. All five missions are located just off the River Walk’s Mission Reach extension south of downtown. I hope you have fun exploring the culture and heritage of our great city.

River Walk

K l a W River Classic Texas barbecue brisket and sauce-drenched racks of ribs are popular favorites at the County Line

By Susan Yerkes

If your knowledge of San Antonio leads you to expect great Mexican food here, you’re right. From popular hole-in-the-wall taco joints to five-star gourmet restaurants, you’ll find your fill of treats from south of the border. But you may be surprised at the culinary range of dining spots you’ll find along the lushly landscaped paths of the famous River Walk. A foodie’s River Walk tour reflects the richly textured history of the people from around the world who make this charming yet cosmopolitan city great.

The Little Rhine Many visitors are surprised to learn the city’s German roots run deep. Long before Texas declared herself an independent republic in 1836, the territory’s government invited European entrepreneurs to invest in populating what was then part of Mexico’s northern frontier. Successful German promoters formed “vereins,” or associations, that brought pioneering farmers and craftsmen to the verdant Hill Country, where towns like Fredericksburg, Castroville and New Braunfels still manifest their strong German heritage. Downtown’s elegant old King William District is named for its main thoroughfare, King William Street -- originally Kaiser William Strasse. As late as 1876, German was actually the primary language in San Antonio, spoken by a majority of the 17,214 residents. And for many years, one section of the river was widely known as “Sauerkraut Bend.” So it’s no surprise to find a sign proclaiming the Little Rhein on the River Walk. The gentle San Antonio River is a far cry from Germany’s broad-shouldered Rhine. But the name fits the Little Rhein Steakhouse, an upscale dining spot with an award-winning wine list. Since 1967 the Little Rhein has been operating in the original Otto Bombach residence, at the main entrance to the historic La Villita District. The beautiful old limestone home, the first stone two-story residence in downtown San Antonio, is a classic example of the influence Germanic stonemasons had on early San Antonio architecture.

Early German settlers called the San Antonio River “the Little Rhein” – giving a name to this mid-20th century Steak House

Back in 1867, German settler Carl Guenther’s Pioneer Flour Mill was thriving on the river near King William. Today Pioneer Flour is a thriving international business, and the old Guenther House is a popular restaurant with its own museum and Little Mill souvenir/kitchen store. (Don’t miss a breakfast of Belgian waffles, pecan waffles and pancakes or sublime German streusel, in restored home or on the sunny garden.) In the wake of the Civil War, Guenther wrote to relatives back home in Germany: “Before the war, we all drank our San Antonio Menger beer. Now that is not good enough; it has to be Bremer beer, English port and ale, Chicago beer and every kind of imported wine.” Upriver, in the heart of downtown, the new Biergarten capitalizes on an old tradition. It’s Oktoberfest here year-round, with frequent sing-alongs, German-clad servers and a menu to match. Try “paddles” piled with bratwurst, knackwurst and polish sausage or huge German pretzels. There’s an intoxicating array of draught and bottled beers to choose from to wash www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

st! e r e t of In s t Poin it down. The adventurous may want to try one of the Biergarten’s signature “’Ritas” – Teutonic tequila-based tipples including the Deutsh-a-rita (tequila, citrus and German beer), Dunkel-rita or Doppel-rita. The oldest German restaurant in town (and one of the oldest continually operated in the state of Texas) is Schilo’s Delicatessen. There’s a classic, casual ambience in this popular diner housed in a 19th-century mercantile exchange building (the old vault was repurposed as a walk-in refrigerator). Antique placards, postcards and signage cover the walls. Tradition is the hallmark of the menu, too. Schilo’s famous homemade root beer, served in old-style frosted mugs, hearty split pea soup, German potato salad, homemade rye bread, sauerkraut and Reuben sandwiches are among no-miss favorites here. The British Isles Irish, Scottish and English settlers came to San Antonio, too. The historic Irish Flats area just north of downtown recalls the settlers who first celebrated St. Patrick’s Day here. St. Patrick’s is still a big time on the River Walk, when the river is dyed a shamrock green. You’ll find the old country spirit alive and flourishing at Durty Nelly’s Pub on the River Walk level of the Hilton Palacio del Rio. Accomplished musicians keep the crowd lively and lead spirited Irish sing-alongs in this 41-year-old watering hole, where the floor is thick with peanut shells and fish and chips are fresh and hot. Stop in for a cold Guinness, and you’ll likely find yourself hanging out for the cozy pub camaraderie. Just a few minutes further up the River Walk, Britannia rules at Mad Dog’s British Pub. Kilt-clad servers and a lifelike English bulldog mascot grace the steps up to this nouveau-classic British pub. There’s a life-sized Beefeater inside (not to mention plenty of Beefeater gin). There’s also a genuine old London phone booth and “God Save the Queen” in stained glass above the busy main bar. Bangers and Mash Windsor Castle (sausages on heaped-high mashed potatoes, smothered in onions and gravy), home-style cottage pie and O’Flannigan’s Corned Beef and Cabbage are among menu favorites here. Mediterranean and More Italian immigrants influenced another of San Antonio’s cultural streams with their own neighborhoods, churches and old-world associations. Italian flags mark Michelino’s classic Italian restaurant in the heart of the River Walk, where fresh bruschetta and chicken parmesan are popular choices. Tony Roma’s in Rivercenter Mall features the international chain’s Italian-style chop house favorites, including ribs, steaks and Tony’s signature onion loaf. For hearty and elegant contemporary takes on the Mediterranean tradition, check out Paesano’s River Walk. Garlic-and-lemon-infused Shrimp Paesano has earned iconic status among San Antonio foodies. Oven-baked pizzas, crisp, tender calamari, fresh fish and plentiful pasta are all among the favorite items here. The beat goes on along the River Walk and just beyond, from the Kremlin bar and night club to Boudro’s, with awardwinning, southwest style steak and seafood. The tableside guacamole is a sacred ritual here, and no evening is complete without at least a taste of the classic bourbon-sauced bread pudding. Also acclaimed is celeb chef John Besh’s cool contemporary Lüke, where New Orleans French and Texas Hill Country traditions fuse in multiple tempting dishes. Southern European style rules at the elegant new Bella on the River. And up on the street level, Saveurs 209 Broadway, is winning raves for serious French specialties, from house made fois gras terrine to duck breast moulard and pan seared scallops with chorizo. Try a taste of Asia at Thai Lao Orchid, at 126 Broadway, a simple Asian-themed storefront with fine fresh Thai dishes, curries, sushi and seafood. Kimura, at Pecan and St. Mary’s Streets, offers traditional ramen-based noodle dishes as lunch specials. Come evening, try out traditional Japanese bar foods, cocktails, sake and beer. Texas Pride With this range of international flavors to choose from, don’t forget that Texas was once an independent nation. Texas pride infuses the flavors at River Walk favorites like The County Line, where the biggest rack of ribs almost covers the table, and the barbecued brisket draws fans from far and wide. For more Texas national pride, try The Republic of Texas Restaurant. Lone Star flag umbrellas line the patio section of this classic café in the heart of downtown.

— Sam Houston

Had Sam Houston and General Santa Anna sat at a Boudro’s riverside table to share a Blackened Prime Rib and a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, things may have turned out more amicably. So, if you want to write some Texas history for yourself, join us for lunch or dinner. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Rio Rio Cantina

Locally Famous and Famously Local

If you want to eat like a local, drink like a local and celebrate like a local, then Rio Rio Cantina is your destination. One of the original restaurants on the River Walk, Rio is locally owned and exudes local color. It offers a truly unique San Antonio experience. Established in 1989, Rio features five River Walk patios with a stateof-the art misting system. Rio serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, and features Happy Hour every day of the week in its renowned Naked Iguana Tequila Bar on the River Walk.

Dine and drink like a local with Rio’s sizzling fajitas and craft beers. This popular dish is made with Certified Angus Beef, chicken or a combination of both. This hearty meal begs for pairing with one of Rio’s many locally produced craft beers.

Rio’s Tex-Mex menus include a variety of gluten-free and vegetarian dishes, as well as meaty options for carnivores.

Drink like a local and kick back with one of Rio’s signature handcrafted margaritas. Unique to Rio are the Montelobos Mezcal Margaritas. Also exclusive to Rio is Patron’s Reposado Barrel – Batch 145. This hand selected Patron Reposado Barrel, is made especially for Rio Rio Cantina’s Naked Iguana Tequila Bar, and is aged 10 months in a Hungarian Oak barrel. Enjoy one of the many margaritas made with Batch 145.

Breakfast like a local and jump start your day with Rio’s big Breakfast Burrito – three scrambled eggs, bacon, avocado, American cheese, and pico de gallo served in a hand-wrapped flour tortilla with homemade salsa verde on the side. Or go for the beef and order Barbacoa. Mexican-style beef barbecue slow-cooked with regional spices. Lunch like a local and start off with Rio’s gluten-free chips, Chicharrones and homemade salsas. These tasty, fresh salsas are the perfect complement to any menu item. Choose from Salsa Roja, Salsa Negra, Tomatillo Salsa Verde, Pineapple Salsa and Street Salsa or try them 22

all. Lunch favorites are the Baja Beer-Battered fish tacos and Enchiladas Rio Rio. Quench your thirst with refreshing homemade Aguas Frescas.

Q: A:

How do you tell if someone is from Texas? Just give them a few minutes and they will tell you.

Texans are proud of their state, heritage and history and for good reason.

San Antonio Historical FactsH In La Villita stands the Cos House where Santa Anna’s brotherin-law, General Perfecto Cos, signed the articles of Capitulation following the December 1835 Battle of Bexar. This first Battle of the Alamo had Cos’s Mexican troops using the Alamo chapel as a fortress. In three months time, it was the Texians inside and we all know how that ended. H Only one of four missions in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is designated a National Historic Landmark, and that’s Mission Concepción. It’s one of eight National Historic Landmarks in the city, along with the Espada Aqueduct (which is on the park’s grounds), the Alamo, Fort Sam Houston, Hangar 9 at Brooks City-Base, the Majestic Theatre, the Randolph Field Historic District and the Spanish Governor’s Palace. H The missions of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park along with the Alamo, became part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites on July 5th, 2015. The 5 missions include the Alamo, Mission San Jose, Mission Conception, Mission Espada and Mission San Juan Capistrano. H Teddy Roosevelt gathered his famous Rough Riders at the bar in the Menger Hotel next to the city’s most famous Mission, the Alamo. H The first cattle drives originated from the San Antonio Spanish missions. Vaqueros drove hundreds of cattle, sheep, and goats to Louisiana during the American War for Independence to supply American colonists.

Texans love to talk about things that have contributed to the making of a colorful and great Lone Star State, and one of the best places to take a self-guided “course” and discover what they’re talking about happens to be downtown San Antonio. Fascinating sites either on or near the Paseo del Rio (River Walk) offer visitors and locals alike vivid glimpses of the past that have added richness to the Texas experience. All of them can be explored either on foot or via public transportation. A good place to start is the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Cultures that sits in the shadow of the Tower of the Americas in HemisFair Park. The name of the place may sound a bit stuffy, but this museum’s 45,000 square feet of exhibit space is anything but, as it showcases more than 20 cultures stitched into the Texas tapestry. “Los Tejanos,” the Institute’s newest permanent exhibit, focuses on Spanish, Mexican and indigenous peoples that created a “mestizo,” or mixed race, that would lead to the emergence of a new Texan culture – the Tejanos. It covers 500 years of exploration, conquest, settlement, war and treaties. In addition to its permanent collection of historical items and artifacts, the Institute hosts temporary exhibits. For more Institute information, call (210) 458-2300, or visit www.TexanCultures.com.

Another Texas Heritage 101 “course requirement” is a visit to The Alamo, the world-famous Spanish mission that sits in a 4.2-acre urban oasis of trees, shrubs and flowers surrounded by hotels, office buildings and retail establishments. Here in March 1836 during a struggle for independence from Mexico, a small band of Texans held out for 13 days against an army commanded by Gen. Antonio Lόpez de Santa Anna. Alamo defenders like James Bowie, William B. Travis and David Crockett gave their lives in the conflict and earned fame for their bravery.

The Long Barrack, the oldest structure on site at almost 300 years, is filled with reminders of the iconic battle as well as an interpretive exhibit –“The Alamo: A Story Bigger Than Texas.” Visitors can roam the grounds on their own, take a 45-minute audio tour or experience the Alamo Battlefield Tour and learn about the last stands of Alamo heroes such as Travis and Crockett. Additional information is available at (210) 225-1391 or at www.thealamo.org. Approximately a half-mile west of the Alamo and next to San Antonio City Hall lies the Spanish Governor’s Palace, a National Historic Landmark that dates to the 1700s when Spain and France were grappling for control of what became Texas.

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

The Spanish built presidios (or forts) and missions (or churches) to thwart French expansion, so the Presidio San Antonio de Béxar was established in 1718 at the headwaters of the San Antonio River, then reestablished in 1722 at its present location. The building now known as the Spanish Governor’s Palace housed the captain of the presidio and his office. One of his principal duties was to protect the priests at Mission San Antonio de Valero, later known as the Alamo, as well as settlers. In 1731, 15 families from the Canary Islands arrived to found a settlement that ultimately became San Antonio. Now owned by the City of San Antonio, the Spanish Governor’s Palace includes a museum and beautiful tree-shaded courtyard. It’s open daily except on Mondays and major holidays. Visit www.spanishgovernorsplace. org, or call (210) 224-0601 for more details. The newest addition to Texas Heritage 101 is the Briscoe Western Art Museum, or The Briscoe for short. It’s named in honor of the late Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe Jr., and his wife, Janey Slaughter Briscoe, who were ranchers, philanthropists and lovers of Western art. Visitors approaching from the River Walk can’t help but notice T. D. Kelsey’s “Coming Home to

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

the Briscoe,” an eye-catching 3-ton bronze sculpture depicting a vaquero (Mexican cowboy) herding longhorns on a cattle drive. The beautifully restored, 1930s-vintage building that once served as the San Antonio Public Library and later the Hertzberg Circus Museum now shines with three floors of art and artifacts of the American West, especially Texas. Highlights of nine galleries include Santa Anna’s sword, works by Frederic Remington, Pancho Villa’s last known saddle, contemporary and historic paintings, sculptures, an impressive collection of spurs and other cowboy gear, weapons and photography. “Tuesday Nights at The Briscoe” offers free admission from 4 to 9 p.m., plus special activities such as concerts, gallery talks, dance performances and lectures. It coincides with free downtown parking on Tuesday evenings and free transportation around downtown from 6 p.m. to midnight on VIA Metropolitan Transit’s new route – “The E” – with service provided by special orange trolleys. What’s new at The Briscoe can be found at www.BriscoeMuseum.org or (210) 299-4499. Texas indeed boasts a rich heritage, and nowhere is that more visible than deep in the heart of the Alamo City.

IDENTITY – According to 2010 US Census Bureau, 63% of San Antonio’s population culturally identifies themselves as Hispanic or Latino compared to 37 % statewide and 17% in the United States. ANCESTRY – 113,232 people in San Antonio claim German as their ancestry, according to the 2012 US Census Bureau. At 8.48% this is the largest single ancestry. Irish comes in at a distant second with 4.95%. RELIGION – Religion is literally, at the heart of the city. When San Fernando cathedral was built in 1738 it officially marked the city center. Today, 30.9% are Catholic, 7.27% are another Christian faith, 1.44% are LDS, 1.19% Islamic, 0.58% Eastern faith, and 0.31% Jewish LANGUAGE – San Antonio is a bi-cultural community rich with Latin American traditions. English and Spanish are spoken side by side by many. Spanish speakers have risen to almost a third of the population. Statewide and locally, Vietnamese and Chinese have replaced German and French to become the third and fourth most spoken language. FRIENDLY – The slogan “Keep Texas Friendly” isn’t just lip-service ‘round these here parts. 80 years ago Texas adopted the motto Friendship. The hospitality industry offers the customer service course Texas Friendly Hospitality. And the official traffic safety slogan, Drive Friendly, was developed in the early 1970’s.

GENEROSITY – Plain and simple, San Antonions are givers. If someone is in need you can be sure a BBQ fundraiser isn’t far behind. Food and clothing drives for hurricane victims and suits for women starting a career- you name it and the effusive spirit of giving is a big part of the culture. Bexar County has the highest overall giving ratio at all income levels than neighboring counties.

GRUENE

AUNFELS

By Carole Miller Sir Winston Churchill once said, “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.” And through architecture, it’s possible to discover many things about a culture. Few things last the way architecture does. After all, buildings are constructed of durable materials and tend to last for a long time. The rich heritage of the Alamo City includes strong Spanish, Mexican and German influences and is so unmistakably our own wonderful, blend of cultures that Mark Twain once called it one of the four most unique cities in America. Remember the Alamo? The first buildings in San Antonio stand as enduring SEGUINmonuments to the Franciscans who brought Christianity to the New World. These walled compounds or missions were constructed in the 18th century by the Spaniards. They encompassed a church and other buildings and served a dual purpose. First, the walls protected the people from being attacked and, most importantly, they recruited new members into the Catholic Church. San Antonio’s five missions are considered some of the finest examples of Spanish colonial architecture in the United States. This type of architecture brought the classical, European-style architecture with beautiful, intricate details from the Spaniards and mixed it generously with the much more minimal Mexican architecture characterized by arches, thick openings and interesting doors. The four historic missions that make up the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park include: Nuestra Señora de La Purisma Conceptión de Acuña, San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, San Juan Capistrano and San Francisco de La Espada. (If that sounds like a mouthful, the locals call them Conceptión, San José, San Juan and Espada for short.) And San Antonio’s most famous mission, San Antonio de Valero, was the www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

sight of the infamous Battle of the Alamo. Remember? We do. Not only do the missions reflect the heritage of the Alamo City, they were designated on July 5, 2015 as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The World Heritage List recognizes the most significant cultural and natural sites in the world such as Stonehenge, Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid and the Great Wall of China and includes only 21 other sites in the United States including the Grand Canyon, Independence Hall and Statue of Liberty. Everything old is new again The Spanish colonial revival movement, which surged in popularity from 1915 to 1930, began with a roux of Spanish colonial style. The Spanish colonial style, already a mixture of cultures, was joined by a medley of Mediterranean mastery, a morsel of Moorish muquarnas, a bit of Baroque and several dashes of Romanesque and Renaissance inspiration from Europe combined with the simplicity of the native Southwest Indian adobes. This style remains popular in San Antonio and is marked by the prodigious use of curves, arches, stucco, handpainted tiles, red tile roofs, towers, balconies, iron details and courtyards. Many notable archetypes of this style can be found all over downtown including the Tobin Center, the Arneson River Theater, San Fernando Cathedral, La Villita, the Spanish Governors Palace, Majestic Theater and the McNay Museum (just north of downtown).

Zeitgeist blitzkrieg and beer Germans first immigrated to Texas in the 1830s. But the Germans were not your typical immigrants. They were not poverty-stricken or oppressed. Conversely, they were land-owning families and college-educated professionals who used their wealth to build lavish homes within an enclave they named in honor of King Wilhelm I of Prussia. By the 1890s the population of San Antonio was one third German. They brought with them their distinctive foods, customs and architecture and the King William Historic District just south of downtown became one of the most affluent German neighborhoods. Most importantly, however, they gave us such Texas German beers as Pearl and Shiner. And everyone knows that beer is vital to survival in San Antonio, especially in August.

And with beer comes breweries. Both the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Pearl Brewery Complex began their lives as breweries and still stand as wonderful examples of the Germans’ fanciful-yetpractical schloss-style design with their grand style and crenellated parapets overlooking the city.

The whole enchilada In a city as truly unique as San Antonio, you have to mix things up a little and insert something odd, right? In our case, the big red enchilada in the room (or, in this case, in the downtown skyline) is the San Antonio Public Library. Since its inauguration, the iconic Central Library’s bright-colored, striking Mexican Modernist design has attracted a great deal of attention in architectural and library circles. Other architectural points-of-interest not to be missed are the Emily Morgan and Gunter Hotels with their intricate, carved grotesques, gargoyles and stone embellishments indicative of the NeoGothic Revival style. And the Bexar County Courthouse is a wonderful work of Romanesque Revival architecture. The grandiose Beaux Arts style combined with Art Deco to form the Drury Plaza. And countless Art Deco-inspired buildings line the downtown skyline. You may call it a mixed up melee, a cacophony of construction or even a barrage of buildings, but in the melting pot that is San Antonio, we call it home.

Music in the Air By Emily Glisson

From Mariachis strumming their guitars to German musicians pulling their melodeons, the cultural sounds of San Antonio keep music in the air.

Mariachi group perform at Mi Tierra restaurant

If you take a stroll through downtown San Antonio’s historic Market Square, you’re likely to hear the sweet sounds of Tejano music either blasting through a speaker or being sung by locals. Tourists shop along the vendor carts while snapping photos of people singing and dancing to their favorite cultural tunes. It’s a fun and festive atmosphere for the entire family – one that truly embraces Mexican culture. Just a few feet away from all the action is Mi Tierra Restaurant and Bakery – an authentic Mexican restaurant opened 24-hours a day to tourists and locals alike. This self-proclaimed “loco” eatery is colorful, crazy, and a whole lot of fun. With colorful lights strung all year long, guests can enjoy non-stop Mariachi music, Tejano music, and an Elvis-Mariachi, just to make things a bit more interesting. But San Antonio is not only known for its rich Tejano culture. The city boasts of its German roots as well. Just a few minutes away from the bustling Market Square, in the heart of the King William District, is Beethoven Maennerchor – one of the oldest German singing societies in Texas. Founded in 1867, this non-profit organization has been practicing and performing German chorus for over 150 years. Guests can attend concerts in the main building or partake in numerous fun activities in the Garten, which sits adjacent to the main performance area. Some of these fun activities are staples among San Antonio locals, including Gartenkonzerts, Oktoberfest, Kristkindlemarkt, Fiesta events, and First Friday events. Central and South Texas is also known for its tall hills, limestone, and scenic routes. Just on the outskirts of San Antonio is nearly 25-miles of rugged and rolling Texas Hill Country. In the midst of those hills sits a small German town called Boerne, just 35 minutes north of the heart of downtown San Antonio. Like most small towns in the Texas Hill Country, Boerne embraces its German heritage through food and music. Among the most popular is The Boerne Village Band. They are one of the oldest German bands in the state, performing continuously since 1860. Popularly known as “oom-pah” music, you can catch The Boerne Village Band perform live in the Main Plaza of downtown Boerne every other Tuesday night. Guests can bring blankets and lawn chairs while listening to some of the most popular German songs. Aside from their regularly scheduled Tuesday appearances, The Boerne Village Band can also be seen performing at some of the most popular Hill Country German festivals, including Berges Fest in Boerne, Wurstfest in New Braunfels, and Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg. From Mariachis strumming their guitars to German musicians pulling their melodeons, the cultural sounds of San Antonio keep music in the air.

Melting Pot

By Ron Aaron Eisenberg

Boerne

Beginning in the mid-1800s immigrants from Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Ireland, France and elsewhere in Europe flocked to San Antonio and surrounding settlements. They put down roots and raised families in places that became Boerne, Castroville, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, and New Braunfels. They brought with them the customs and character of their former countries and more. Like language and specialty foods, music, dress, and religion. And those customs and languages can still be found today.

Boerne

One such community is Boerne, just 37 minutes north of San Antonio. German immigrants and some Czechs first settled there near the cool waters of the Cibolo Creek over 150 years ago. Boerne’s beginnings are still evident in the old stone buildings with narrow windows, steep gables, outside stairways and gardens. More than 140 historic structures remain, according to www.visitboerne.org. A stroll down Haupstrasse (Main Street in German) through Boerne’s historic district offers a wide assortment of specialty shops including antiques, home accessories, unique gift items, trendy boutiques, jewelry stores, and art galleries. Boerne also has several outstanding restaurants including Little Gretel’s BIERGARTEN which features traditional Czech foods like Wurst Kiolbasa Kolache. Annual Czech festivals are held in many communities in south Texas including Shiner, Hallettsville, and Schulenburg, who all feature Czech foods and music.

Fredericksburg

French immigrants from the Alsace region of that country settled in the area that became Castroville, 30 minutes west of San Antonio, along the Medina River. Today, the red rooftops, white buildings and European architecture reflect the area’s proud history and culture. Perhaps more than architecture, the biggest influence Alsatians have had on Castroville is the food. Haby’s Alsatian Bakery has been a tradition since 1974. Locals recommend the honey buns, frosted cookies, pastries such as stollen and kugelhopf and knotted breads, including French bread. Dzuik’s Meat Market is famous for its dried sausage and parisa, a raw meat dish similar to steak tartare. Among Castroville’s restaurants Le Chat Noir gets rave reviews. The Alsatian Restaurant features Jaegerschnitzel. And Chateau Lafayette showcases traditional dried sausages and cheeses. Fredericksburg is located about an hour north of San Antonio, in the Hill Country. German immigrants who came from what was known as Prussia at the time settled the area in 1846. Fredericksburg is known for its many “Sunday Haus” guesthouse lodgings and Main Street shopping. It is also home to many restaurants, German biergartens, music events and more. 50

RIO Magazine

With its distinct German flair and historic buildings, the community is truly like being in a part of the Old World. Many visitors come to Fredericksburg to shop at Kuckuck’s Nest. The store is a one-of-a-kind featuring cuckoo clocks, dirndls (traditional Bavarian dress), lederhosen, hats, hatpins, beer steins, plus table linens, lace curtains from Germany and other collectibles. It also sells antiques and unusual items all originals from Germany. The German influence is predominant throughout the community, although native speakers are far less common today. Friedhelm’s Bavarian Inn and Der Lindenbaum gets rave reviews from locals for their authentic German cuisine. German and Polish immigrants established New Braunfels, 39 minutes north of San Antonio, in 1845. Like Boerne, the German influence is very evident in the community from street names to restaurants, antique establishments and more. The Museum of Texas Handmade Furniture is filled with examples of furniture and other imports prized by the German community. Polish immigrants travelled to Texas in 1855, and settled in several communities including what became St. Hedwig in Bexar County, southeast

of San Antonio. Another group of Polish immigrants moved to the frontier west of San Antonio, settling in what is now Bandera, about 65 minutes from San Antonio. Festivals thrive in the smaller cities in and around St. Hedwig with servings of Polish food. Preeminent, of course, is the kielbasa, the Polish sausage with lots of garlic. Other Polish foods include the pierogi, a dumpling often stuffed with various fillings; bigos, a kind of stew; babka, a cake served at Easter; rosol, chicken soup, and golbaki, cabbage rolls. Polish immigrants also settled in San Antonio that is now home to the Polish Eagle Dance Group and the South Texas Polish Dancers Irish immigrants also came to South Texas. The San Antonio Harp and Shamrock Society of Texas participates in the River Walk’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and dyeing the River Walk green. Bottom line, there may be no need to travel to Europe to experience authentic German, Polish, Czech and Irish food and customs. And of course the influence of Hispanics who populated Texas is seen, tasted, and felt everywhere, our beautiful melting pot of cultures.

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.
