The restaurants on Houston go the extra mile on creating delectable meals and most, like LÜKE, offer fresh from the market products. If you have kids with you, consider coming to a place like Hard Rock Café that is Kid- Friendly and fun for the whole family. If you want to try your hand at creating a meal, let an expert guide you through a Cooking and Mixing Class- there are a few options around town and even the little ones can get in on the action. After chowing down, you might want to stop by any local watering hole and get a taste of Craft Beers or take a short drive trough the surrounding Texas Spirits Trail. Last, San Antonio might be famous for its Tex-Mex food and its authentic Mexican cuisine but don’t be fooled, those choices barely begin to scratch the surface of what our Top 10 Trendy Restaurants serve. bebida se sorprenderán con la extensa variedad de comida local; desde camiones de comida de moda a mesa de manteles blancos, lo tenemos todo.

Wet your whistle with
Craf t Beers BY: LEANDRA HERNANDEZ
12 RIO Magazine
www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
If you’re visiting Texas for the first time, more than likely you have come across one of our state’s favorite pastimes - BEER! How many of these labels have you tried?
Ubiquitous and found almost everywhere Texans gather, we take pride in drinking beer, especially on hot, summer days and near a barbeque grilling up our favorite specialties. Still hot on the scene and becoming more popular at bars and restaurants alike and especially on The San Antonio River Walk, are the availability of craft beers. Most beer aficionados are familiar with craft beer and their preferences of types, grains, hops, flavors and more. For those, not in the know just yet, there are many to discover to whet the appetite and keep one cool in our Texas summer sun. Begin your beer trail on the River walk at Tex’s Sports Bar, one of the oldest sports bars on the river walk. Opened in 1970 and located on South Alamo Street on the river, you can enjoy your favorite craft beers such as Perdernale’s, St. Arnold’s and other local Texas small-brewed beers. Tucked away under the Hilton Palacio Del Rio Hotel, Tex’s is located next door to our famed outdoor Arneson River Theater, where even if you don’t have tickets to the show, you can still enjoy and listen to the sounds from the patio. Enjoy music, theater and dance with your favorite brewski and sip, sit and relax with the sights and sounds of the river walk out of the hustle and bustle. If sports are what you came for, Tex’s offers multiple screens to watch your favorite sport while drinking your favorite brew. A full menu is available at dinner including chicken wings, sirloin burgers, nachos and more. Snacks including freshly popped popcorn are available in the daytime. Make your way to Mad Dog’s where the beers keep flowing and the fun never stops. Entertainment abounds daily in this British-themed environment where you can eat and drink cool Britannia. Sport a Rodeo Clown Double IPA, or a Hopadillo IPA in a 24oz half-yard take-away cup where they will pour whatever your heart desires in beer. Also getting trendier by the second is cider and Mad Dog’s is a great spot to try your first. Featuring Strongbow Cider and others, cider is fast becoming popular
www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com
for beer and craft brew drinkers alike. If you’re feeling a little steadier than most, opt for the 40oz pour but don’t let the Beer Goggles take over. British fare, pub grub, Texas specialties, buffet and yummy desserts are available on an expansive menu available all day. Thinking of knocking back a few with your favorite furry friend in tow? Head to newly-opened Charlie Wants A Burger, sports bar/restaurant featuring an extensive menu of craft beers where you can sip a few while your furry companion looks on. Named after a real dog, Charlie, this sports bar features a dog-friendly patio and varied menu options to suit you both. Home of the 2lb burger, Charlie’s dares you to finish it all and if you do the burger becomes gratis! Nine bottled craft beer bombers (size) ranging from 22oz–24.5oz and three more are available on tap. Craft beers to give you that liquid courage include Boulevard DoubleWide, Omer Traditional Blonde, Rogue Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout, Busted Sandal Slippery Rock IPA and many more. The all important Happy Hour is featured seven days a week from 3-6pm and a Reverse Happy Hour is also available 9pm-close. Make your last point of call at Howl at the Moon where the beers are pouring plentiful and the music and fun are abundant. This bar will keep you on your toes and keep you howling as the interactive live music show of dueling pianos keep the crowd lively and roarin’. Quench your thirst with Samuel Adams specialties, Newcastle and more. A full bar menu is also available with many drink options to suit the light drinker to the hard-core partier. 86 oz Buckets of Booze, 24oz Bone Drinks, Jell-O Shots and Classic Cocktails are also available for non-beer drinkers. “Beer, it’s what’s for dinner. Knock back one or a few on the river where you can find a great selection of craft beers that focus on innovative ingredients and emphasize flavor and quality. You can find it all on the San Antonio River Walk where beauty lies in the hand of the beerholder.

Had Sam Houston and General Santa Anna sat at a Boudro’s riverside table to share a Blackened Prime Rib and a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, things may have turned out more amicably. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Roaming Restaurants o o
If you need a delicious dish, but don’t want to dress up for one of San Antonio’s numerous fancier establishments, you should check out the River City’s food truck scene. We have a number of food truck parks in our fabulous city as well as some roaming vendors that you can find out and about for lunches downtown or at various outside events. The “Cheesy Jane’s” food truck is a mobile off-shoot of their brick and mortar operations. They have a solid burger (preferably with cheese) and stellar tater tots. It’s part of the San Antonio Downtown Food Truck program. They’ll have lunch available at various locations between 11am and 2pm on weekdays. If you’re looking for a more solid location for your mobile restaurants, try one of San Antonio’s Food Truck Parks. ‘Boardwalk on Bulverde’ is a little more off the usual downtown tourist path, but it’s a great place to catch a bite with the whole family. There is a playground available for the kids and an arcade made out of a refashioned school bus. Regularly hosting six food trucks, there are plenty of options for you. If you’re in town in early October, you can even swing on in for the OctoBeer Feast! Otherwise, the park is BYOB. While there, try Chef James’ “Dirty Dawgs”. He has fresh buns and links his own sausage for an awesome hot dog with a host of regional flavors from around the nation. Or if you’re feeling a little Italian -- “Have a Ball Y’All” is an exquisite choice. The Aracini is a fried risotto ball with a molten mozzarella center. It’s a vegetarian take on a meatball, and a great way to start for an appetizer. The chef’s signature dish, the Italian, is a classic meatball sub that tastes like it came fresh from that Italian grandma that you wish you had. There’s also a pita versions of most of the sandwiches, if you’re looking to cut down on your carbs.

Finally, the ‘Alamo Eat Street Bar’ is the place to be for downtown food truck parks. It’s open six days a week (closed Mondays). The bar and the music that highlight this location pale in comparison to the gourmet food truck options that are available to its clientele. “Where Y’at” is the perfect place to start your night on the town. Their Pork Boudin Balls turn a Louisiana classic into a deliciously spicy Cajun delight. The Pulled Pork Po’Boy and Soft Shell Crab Po’Boy are some of their best sellers, as well. You can also taste a little of the East at “Wheelie Gourmet”. The Original (Oh G!) is a classic gyro and the most popular on the menu, however the Chicka Chicka Bang Bang is a fantastic representation of Moroccan spice. It’s a stunning combination of savory and sweet with tender chicken and vegetables. As you dig deeper to the bottom of your dish, the wonderful umami flavor of it all kicks into overdrive. It’s definitely worth checking out!

Truly dedicated to the farm-to-table movement, this restaurant serves the food of the Alsace region of France and Germany made with Texas ingredients “and a whole scoop of New Orleans,” according to Executive Chef John Russ. From curing meats to preserving pickles for the charcuterie board, the food is prepared in-house — even if it takes up to 10 months to make a ham. Don’t miss the Jumbo Shrimp “En Cocotte” with roasted jalapeño cheese grits, andouille and green onion sausage. 125 E. Houston St., 78205 (210) 227-5853 lukesanantonio.com

The picanha from Texas de Brazil- a traditional Brazilian meat skewer
3 Texas de Brazil
Meat-lovers, rejoice: This is the place for beef, lamb, pork, chicken and sausage prepared in a style that originated very far south of our border. Everything is cooked over an open flame and carved tableside by the restaurant’s authentically costumed Gauchos, and the restaurant boasts a fresh, gourmet salad area of more than 50 items. Try the picanha, the house specialty cut in which the most tender part of a top sirloin is seasoned only by rock salt and then slow-roasted over a charcoal flame. And order a caipirinha, the house specialty cocktail made with cachaca, Brazil’s national spirit made from sugar cane. 313 E. Houston St., 78205 (210) 299-1600 texasdebrazil.com
5 The Palm
This fine dining steakhouse serves hand-selected beef with abundant marbling — so adeptly cooked that adding brandy peppercorn, Hollandaise, Béarnaise or chimichurri sauces take the whole plate over the top. And it’s also well-known for its jumbo Nova Scotia Lobster — featured for a special price through Aug. 31 — as well as Italian classics like chicken parmigiana and veal martini. In the mood for a decadent but affordable lunch? The threecourse power lunch is for you. 233 E. Houston St., 78205 (210) 226-7256 thepalm.com

and see everything going on on the River Walk which always keeps the kids entertained, and if they do sit inside, there is all kind of stuff to look at as well––along with the good barbecue of course,” says Scott Ziskovsky, marketing director. “We are very family friendly and we love kids. And we know that if the kids like us, we feel pretty good that they are going to bring their families with them.”

Let’s face it: When you’re dining out with kids, you value different qualities in a restaurant. Instead of searching for the hottest new restaurant or an acclaimed chef with world-class training, the goal is to find a casual atmosphere boasting family-friendly perks like a kids menu and fast service. Fortunately, San Antonio doesn’t fall short on kid-friendly restaurants where the whole family can enter hungry and exit happy––and don’t worry, you won’t get a second look if your two-year-old decorates the floor in crumbs or toys become part of the table decor. Hard Rock Cafe 111 W Crockett St, San Antonio, TX 78205 hardrock.com/cafes/san-antonio If your family isn’t the silent type, take them to this rock ’n’ roll-themed cafe where they can dine in an atmosphere that has as much energy as they do. Situated along San Antonio’s iconic River Walk, families can eat while watching the tourist boats pass by below at this restaurant that knows how to rock out with every age. “As a family friendly restaurant, Hard Rock Cafe San Antonio offers a fun-filled kids menu, youth merchandise and an unforgettable dining experience for children of all ages,” says Keith Airington, general manager. Favorites on the restaurant’s “Little Rocker” menu include everything from burgers to chicken tenders. The fun atmosphere served

Let the kids pose for a photo with a giant 4-foot-long beef rib and color their menu while waiting for their meal. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, kids have their pick from a hearty kids’ plate piled high with brisket, turkey, sausage, a hamburger, corn dog or chicken tenders. “Each plate comes with a kid’s drink, fries and a bowl of homemade ice cream for dessert if it’s okay with mom and dad,” says Ziskovsky of the fabulous $7.79 deal. For that price, let your kids bring a friend.

Central Texas Spirits By Claudia Alarcon Photography courtesy of each respective distillery
After the resounding success of Tito’s, the first vodka legally distilled and bottled in Texas and now available in all 50 states and Canada, the Lone Star spirits industry has boomed, currently boasting 21 distilleries and no sign of slowing down. In Central Texas, a group of undeterred, passionate entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds is at the forefront of artisanal spirit-making, and while their products are distinct and varied, these mavericks have something in common: a true love for their craft and the promise of a bright future for the whole industry.
Treaty Oak Distilling • www.treatyoakrum.com Using self-made equipment, molasses from Santa Rosa, and Hill Country Springs water from Ardrey Springs, near Buda, Daniel Barnes and brothers Chris and Joshua Lamb produce fine spirits out of a small warehouse in North Austin. Their flagship product, Treaty Oak Platinum Rum, was recently joined by Graham’s Sweet Tea Vodka (made with Nilgiri tea from Austin’s Zhi Tea), and Waterloo, a traditional London Dry Gin with a Texas accent. Barnes, who has a sommelier background, developed a signature blend of botanicals for the gin - including juniper, ginger, licorice root, citrus zest, Texas pecans, lavender and rosemary - which is nestled in a basket in the column of the copper stills so the alcohol vapor lifts the flavors during a second distillation. The result is a complex and balanced spirit worthy of enjoying on its own. Their latest release is a six-month aged rum with robust aromas and flavors of cinnamon, vanilla and chocolatecovered cherries.
Paula’s Texas Liqueurs • www.paulastexasorange.com After a year in Tuscany, Paula Angerstein and husband Paul Grosso could not find a good quality limoncello in the Austin market, so she started making her own. Friends and family encouraged her to bottle it commercially, but a friend in the liquor business convinced her to make an orange liqueur to use in margaritas. Based on her limoncello recipe, she developed Paula’s Texas Orange, launching it to the public in 2003, with her original recipe joining later as Paula’s Texas Lemon. Both are made using the rinds of hand-peeled fresh Texas oranges and lemons and pure corn spirits, and today are favorites of savvy Central Texas mixologists and cocktail enthusiasts who prefer their super fresh citrus flavor to other commercial liqueurs. Angerstein is currently working on expanding to Houston and Dallas, setting her eyes out-of-state in the near future.
Cinco Vodka • www.cincovodka.com An avid fan of a good Martini, San Antonio native Richard Azar was not happy that all premium vodkas he enjoyed were European imports, so he set out to make a European-style vodka using all American ingredients. Modeled after Ketel One and billed as “The Martini Lover’s Vodka”, Cinco is made from 100% American wheat from Idaho, where it is custom fermented and distilled four times before shipping to the Cinco Ranch in south San Antonio. At the state-of-the-art facility, Master Distiller John Shepperd blends the spirit with Edwards Aquifer water – filtered on-site by reverse osmosis - and distills a fifth time. The result, according to Azar, is a luxury “five star” spirit, clean and crisp, ideal for those who enjoy vodka Martinis. In keeping with modern technology, Cinco has launched the Cincominder®, a free app for the iPhone which they call “The world’s first cocktail alarm clock.”

Dripping Springs Vodka • www.drippingspringsvodka.com An avid fan of a good Martini, San Antonio native Richard Azar was not happy that all premium vodkas he enjoyed were European imports, so he set out to make a European-style vodka using all American ingredients. Rebecca Creek Distilling • www.rebeccacreekdistillery.com Steve Ison and Mike Cameron spared no expense in outfitting their distillery in Bulverde with the best equipment, including a 3,000 gallon all-copper still which is the largest in the Southern U.S. While their goal was to create the first Texas Single Malt Whiskey, they started producing Enchanted Rock Vodka in the summer of 2010, with a projection of 10,000 cases. Now, production is up to 50,000 cases a year by overwhelming demand. Made from Texas yellow corn and pure water from the Trinity Aquifer, the spirit is distilled for 14 hours, chilled to 24 °F then filtered to produce an ultra-clean vodka. The first batch of Rebecca Creek Whiskey, released in September 2011, is a blend of house-made Whiskey with a Texas-sourced, 8-year Whiskey, aged in charred oak barrels in a non-temperature controlled cellar to extract as much flavor as possible. Because the aging process takes time and varies in duration, Rebecca Creek’s single malts will be available as soon as they are ready, hopefully within a year or two.
Savvy Vodka/Deep Eddy Vodka • www.savvyvodka.com / www.deepeddyvodka.com Using flavorful water from the Hickory aquifer – from a spring in his family’s Fall Creek Vineyards - and a mash made from South Texas corn, Chad Auler created Savvy Vodka in 2006. Distilled in an ultra-modern, custom-made column still for two whole days, then carefully and slowly filtered six times through a proprietary method, the vodka is “as pure as today’s technology can make it,” according to Auler. Staying on top of the latest trends, he partnered with Sweet Leaf Tea’s owner Clayton Christopher in 2008 to produce Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka. Flavored with high-quality Indonesian whole leaf tea, pure cane sugar and Goodflow honey, Auler considers this “a universal product that is authentically Austin.” Its immense popularity created a demand for Deep Eddy straight vodka, a value spirit made using a different process but with the same quality standards as Savvy.
ROXY GIN • www.newartisanspirits.com The first artisanal gin distilled in Texas came from an idea jotted down on a cocktail napkin by former Coca-Cola executive Don Short. His partner, Houston’s legendary Chef Robert Del Grande, developed the recipe using his background in bio-chemistry and extensive culinary knowledge. After a year and a half of testing, Del Grande developed the final recipe using 12 botanicals including sarsaparilla, Texas pecans, grapefruit peel, cocoa nibs and coriander alongside the traditional juniper berries. These flavor agents are steeped in pure vodka produced by Gary Kelleher at San Luis Spirits to produce the gin, which is bottled on-site. The unique bottle is Short’s homage to modern architecture and the skyline of the city of Houston.
Ranger Creek Bourbon • www.drinkrangercreek.com A mutual love for home brewing forged a friendship amongst San Antonio residents Mark McDavid, TJ Miller and Dennis Rylander, who launched Ranger Creek Brewery in November 2010. Knowing that Bourbon is the American spirit per excellence and that Texas is a huge market for it, they set out to make a Texas Bourbon with Miller as head distiller. They grind the mix of 70% Texas-grown corn, rye and barley in house, cook it with carbon-filtered water to produce a sour mash, then filter and distill it. The resulting spirit is mixed with reverse osmosis filtered water and aged in charred American white oak casks for nine months. The final product, released in October of this year, is surprisingly delicious, with complex layers of flavors and a pleasant mouthfeel. Current production is only 150 cases per month.
www.stickneyphotography.com
Garrison Brothers • www.garrisonbros.com The Cadillac of Texas Bourbons hails from a ranch in Hye, near Stonewall. Owner Don Garrison oversees production of ultra-small batches of Straight Texas Bourbon Whiskey made from organic yellow corn from the Texas Panhandle, organic winter wheat grown on site, and rainwater collected and purified at the ranch. They distill in a truly unique copper still, originally built for Wild Turkey for experimental purposes, then age the spirit in new American white oak charred barrels for at least two years. Their first pre-release, limited to 2,000 bottles of unfiltered, 100-proof, one-year-old called The Young Gun, sold exclusively in the Hill Country for $50 per 375 ml bottle. Garrison Brothers quickly achieved cult status amongst Bourbon connoisseurs who eagerly await future releases. Their Signature 2008 Vintage, released November 2010, sold out in 36 hours and the Spring 2011 is already an endangered species. 7,500 bottles of the Fall 2011 Vintage Release, aged for almost 3 years, are available now and expected to sell out quickly.
