Hola Fiesta Amigos! I would be hard pressed to say what my favorite Fiesta event is, but if I am absolutely, positively forced to, I might be able to narrow it down to 20. I can assure you the ladies group who decorated horse-drawn carriages in 1891 and paraded them in front of the Alamo throwing flowers to honor the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto would be pleasantly surprised at what they started! This issue of RIO Magazine is dedicated to how the city of San Antonio has embraced this 124 year tradition called Fiesta. Our city opens its’ arms so wide to embrace this event that public schools are dismissed on the day of the Battle of the Flowers parade, businesses make commemorative Fiesta pins just to give away, commoners are proclaimed royalty, homes and offices are brightly decorated and everyone seems to go out of their way to dress a la Fiesta. Many of our stories give you insight to the great traditions of Fiesta which takes place this year April 1626. You will be so charmed by this San Antonio tradition you will want to take home a dozen cascarones, Guayabera shirt, mariachi music, Fiesta pins and of course great memories. Viva Fiesta!

River Walk

FESTIVE

Mariachis & Margaritas By J.E. Jordan

San Antonio just wouldn’t be the same without these two Mexican imports. Mariachi music makes any gathering a party. Groups of mariachis probably first appeared in the 1700’s, in the small towns of Jalisco, Mexico. Today, their lively music, generating an atmosphere of alegria (joy) is nearly ubiquitous along the River Walk. In its customary modern form, a mariachi group includes violins, trumpets, guitar, vihuela (a small, five-string guitar), and guitarrón. The six-stringed guitarrón was invented for the mariachis. The trumpet was added in the 1930’s giving them the ability to perform a wide variety of musical styles in addition to the regional sones, or instrumental pieces, of Jalisco. The typical mariachi must be able to perform sones, polkas, waltzes, boleros (modern love ballads), rancheras (country “ranch” songs), and any other popular song that is requested. They are often paid on a per-song basis – typically about $10 per song, depending on the number of musicians in the group. The margarita, Spanish for daisy, is a zesty drink made mostly from citrus juices and liquor distilled from the juice of the agave cactus grown in the Tequila region of Mexico. It’s the perfect accompaniment for a romantic mariachi love song performed under a Texas moon. One or both of these Fiesta favorites can be yours for the enjoyment at many River Walk dining spots. Here are just a few. In 1946, just seven years after a construction project broke ground on the San Antonio River, setting the stage for today’s River Walk, Casa Rio Mexican Restaurant, 430 E. Commerce, opened its doors. Casa Rio was the first San Antonio business open to the river. Its thick rock walls, window lintels and fireplace are remnants of the building’s core – a Spanish Colonial period hacienda. Casa Rio serves traditional top shelf, premium and flavored margaritas on shore or on dinner/cocktail barges. The tour and dinner boats that ply the San Antonio River evolved from canoes, gondolas and paddle boats which first began at 12

RIO Magazine

Casa Rio. For more than 10 years, Mariachi Mexicanisimo has added to the festive atmosphere at lunch and dinner daily and can be heard almost continuously from 2:00 PM to closing on weekends. There are more than 30 different margaritas to sample at the Original Mexican Restaurant, 528 River Walk. Opened in 1988, the Original was the third Mexican restaurant to open on the revived Paseo del Rio. Most notable on the drink menu are Dos-A-Ritas – 32 ounces frozen or on the rocks, with your choice of bottled beer inserted head-first. Like the Black Volcano featuring Shiner Black, or the Davy Crockett, paired with San Antoniobrewed Alamo Beer. Not a beer lover? The Surly Frenchman comes impaled with a mini-bottle of champagne. Margarita Floats are topped with a variety of liquors/liqueurs. Add your choice of flavors – from watermelon to jalapeno – to any frozen original margarita. On any day, especially during the lunch and dinner hours, one or more of the seven or so roving mariachi bands which work the river can stop by. On weekends, up to three mariachi groups work different rooms throughout the restaurant. It starts with the picturesque indoor area, featuring murals by San Antonio artist, Adriel McGill, but Café Ole, 521 River Walk, doesn’t stop there. It meanders out to a balcony, a patio, and even onto the river itself. Patrons can book a Rio San Antonio river barge for a private dinner party or cocktail cruise, or reserve in advance for just a couple on a Community Boat. A regularly scheduled mariachi band moves among the balcony, patio and indoor area every day at lunch and dinner hours. Wandering mariachis fill in between lunch and dinner. Try an Effen Cucumber Watermelon Margarita or dare the 60-ounce size (only one to a customer, please), available in several flavors. Belly up to the sports bar, check to see which game you want to watch, and order up a . . . gorgeous pink and white margarita. Not your idea of a sports bar? Then you don’t know Charlie Wants a Burger, at 223 www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Losoya. When it comes to margaritas, color’s the name of the game at this sports bar, named for the owner’s best four-legged friend. The Cactus Rita, frozen or on the rocks, blushes with a swirl of magentacolored puree of prickly pear soaked in gold tequila. And whether you enter from street level or the River Walk, you can settle into the bar area, dining area or pet-friendly patio overlooking the river to choose from among a Blue Margarita colored by Blue Curacao, or other tequila concoctions sweetened and flavored with mango or strawberry puree. For purists, there’s the Original Margarita – gold tequila and fresh lime juice. There’s also a Top Shelf and a “Dangerous” Margarita –with Agave Peligroso Tequila Reposada, fresh lime juice and agave nectar.

Barriba Cantina, 111 W. Crockett #214, on the Southbank, next door to Hard Rock Café, offers up free live blues by local bands seven nights a week. Relax on the balcony or patio and pour your handmade margarita straight from the shaker -- tart, citrusy and lightly sweetened with organic agave nectar. Of course there are frozen versions as well – like The Gallo Borracho, a jumbo frozen margarita, which comes with a seven-ounce Sol beer thrust in head-first, and six other shaken or frozen tequila drinks, some of which may be personalized with strawberry, prickly pear or mango.

— Jim Bowie

Had Boudro’s been serving on the River Walk back then, Jim Bowie could have carved his Center Cut Top Sirloin with a butter knife. Prime steaks, Gulf Coast seafood and the best Margaritas around have made Boudro’s one of the Alamo City’s most loved restaurants. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

How do you tell if someone How do you tell if someone is from Texas? is from Texas? Just give them a few minutes Just give them a few minutes and they will tell you. and they will tell you.

Texans are proud of their state, heritage and history after history for good reason.

Texas and the United States

H Texas was an independent country called the Republic of Texas before it was a state. It is the only state to enter the United States by treaty. Other states entered by annexation. H Texas, as part of its entrance into the United States, has the right to fly its state flag at the same height as the US Flag. H Texas is larger than every country in Europe. If it was a separate country it would be in the Top 40 of the largest countries in the world. H The State Capitol building is the largest state capitol in the country and is taller than the US Capitol building in Washington DC.

San Antonio in Texas History

H The Alamo is the result of a failed mission, San Francisco Solano, being relocated to the San Antonio River and renamed San Antonio de Valero in 1718. H There were reports that Davy Crocket was one of a few Texans captured and then executed on the orders of General Santa Ana. H The bodies of the defenders of the Alamo were not buried; they were ordered burned by General Santa Ana. The charred remains are claimed to be contained in a marble chest inside the entrance to the San Fernando Cathedral.

San Antonio Firsts

H San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest Cathedral in the State of Texas and one of the oldest in the United States. It began construction in 1730. H By 1900 San Antonio was the largest city in the State of Texas with a population of over 53,000 and continued to be the largest into the 1920’s. Today it is the 7th largest city in the United States. H Market Square in downtown San Antonio is the largest Mexican Market outside of Mexico.

APRIL

Important dates in the history of San Antonio for the month of March April 21, 1836 The battle cry “Remember the Alamo” became etched in Texas history when General Santa Ana was defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto. April 21, 1891 The first Battle of Flowers takes place honoring the heroes of the Alamo and Battle of San Jacinto. Today it is the only parade of its size completely planned and directed by women. The parade is only second in size to the Tournament of Roses parade in California.

Viva FiestaS Fashion! By Bonny Osterhage

“Our timeless spring and summer fashions always fit in with San Antonio’s colorful Fiesta® season”

It’s the most colorful time of the year! Beginning April 16, the already vibrant city of San Antonio becomes brighter than ever as residents celebrate Fiesta®. This ten-day, city-wide party is filled with food, fun, and fabulous fashions. Eye popping shades of pink, blue, yellow, orange, and green fill the stores and the streets as revelers don their Fiesta finest. So how do you get the look? There are several ways. If you want to go authentic, check out the embroidered blouses, dresses, and skirts at Nativa at 5124 Broadway. This boutique is home to beautiful, elaborately embroidered clothing and accessories, perfect for parties and parades. “Everything we carry is hand-made by Mexican women in indigenous communities,” says owner Tressa Castro. “Because everything is hand embroidered, each item cam take from a week to eight months to make.” 26

RIO Magazine

For something a little more kitschy, shop the Fiesta® store at 2611 Broadway. Here you will find everything you need to get your Fiesta® on, all under one roof. Official tee shirts, as well as floral hats, funky jewelry, and of course those coveted Fiesta® pins, line the shelves of this popular one-stop-shop. Looking for something that plays well with the rest of your wardrobe? Most San Antonio boutiques go into overdrive this time of year with plenty of current trends in bold colors. Pinky’s Boutique at 4215 McCullough Ave. is a favorite among locals for fashionably clothing that’s also Fiesta® friendly. “Our timeless spring and summer fashions always fit in with our San Antonio’s colorful Fiesta® season,” says owner Pinky Towner. “We’re a bit of bohemian chic, casual, yet unique, and always up with the trends.”

During Fiesta,

Anyone Can be royalty Y By Carole Miller Z The celebration of Fiesta includes a byzantine lineage of royalty that runs from proper potentates to utterly ludicrous and irreverent rulers with a little bit of everything in-between thrown in for good measure. But they all have one thing in common—they “party with a purpose” and use their (albeit temporary) royal status to give back to the community in a magnanimous way fit for a king (or queen). Royals spend the 11 days of Fiesta making appearances at schools, hospitals, parades and Fiesta events to spread good cheer and lend some excitement to the atmosphere. Fiesta’s most-recognizable monarchs are King Antonio, the Queen of the Order of the Alamo and El Rey Feo, “The Ugly King.” But Fiesta isn’t about three-of-a-kind—Fiesta is a royal flush. If three regal representatives are good, then, using the logic of Fiesta, more must be better. And if no one crowns you king—crown yourself. During the magical melee that is Fiesta, anyone can be queen or king for a day (or 11). Today, the ruling authority on what’s “official” and what’s not is The Fiesta Commission. This organization is funded entirely by the private sector and receives no direct city or other public funding. It provides funds for Fiesta events that are not financially self-supporting. There 32

RIO Magazine

are nine “official” members of the Fiesta Royal Family plus 10 military ambassadors, all of whom give back to the community in order to earn their lofty titles. But Fiesta is not a time to follow rules or wait around. There are a multitude of monarchs from many “unofficial” royal houses throughout San Antonio. Legions of local charitable organizations sponsor their own kings and queens with all the money going to benefit the less fortunate as well. One of the most famous of these outlaws is King Anchovy who reigns over Cornyation, a parody of Fiesta’s pageantry billed as the “raunchiest, cheapest event of Fiesta” that raises money for the San Antonio AIDS Foundation and BEAT AIDS. Adding to the confusion of school children across San Antonio who meet a new king every day for 11 days, there is also a King and Queen of Chips and Salsa who are crowned during a casino night party benefitting SA Youth, an organization that works to develop the character, strengths, talents and skills of San Antonio’s high-risk urban youth. The King and Queen of Downtown sponsored by the Downtown Centro Association benefit Centro educational programming and events. The Latin American Heritage King is honored for his dedication to the Hispanic

community with money raised going to local music or fine arts scholarships for young women. And the San Antonio Gardenia and Musical Club sponsors the Gardenia Queen who always presides over one of the loveliest, flower-filled parade floats and presents annual scholarships to students in the fine arts. And if all else fails, some of the Alamo City’s most colorful personalities have simply declared themselves the king or queen of whatever strikes their fancy. They make their own medals, deck themselves out with all the pomp and circumstance of any self-appointed ruler and are equally as beloved and revered as their official counterparts at most Fiesta events. Such is the case with local self-appointed Fiesta Hat King and Queen whose charitable organization provides free books for children’s hospitals around San Antonio. Some additional historicalbut-now-defunct kings who reigned during the infancy of Fiesta included King Cotton, Zeus, Rex, King Selamat (tamales spelled backwards) and King Omala (Alamo spelled backwards). Heck, you don’t even have to be human to be a king during Fiesta! El Rey Fido is the title conferred upon a canine (along with their human companion) who collects more money for the San Antonio Humane Society than any www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

other canine-and-human pair. El Rey Fido and His Royal Court serve as ambassadors for the San Antonio Humane Society during their reigning year and participate in various media and event appearances. Similarly, El Rey Gato and El Rey Perro are a cat and dog pair of rescued royals selected by the Animal Defense League to raise awareness of San Antonio’s unwanted and neglected animals and the importance of spaying and neutering. Of the “official” monarchs, the Queen of the Order of the Alamo was the first to emerge onto the sovereign scene. She was selected in 1909 by the newlyformed men’s organization, the Order of the Alamo. Since then, members meet once a year to choose the next year’s queen and her court which includes a princess and 24 duchesses. The ladies, who are the daughters of prominent members of San Antonio society, wear dresses with long trains dripping with jewels as they are crowned at the elaborate Coronation of the Queen ceremony. In 1927, King Antonio was selected for the first time by the Texas Cavaliers, an organization formed for just that purpose. When the Works Progress Administration completed improvements to the San Antonio River in 1941, the Cavaliers decided to introduce the king in a river parade—the first event to take place on the river after the improvements. Today, the River Parade is one of the few in the nation in which a float is actually “afloat.”

The first El Rey Feo, also referred to as The People’s King, was crowned in 1947 stemming from a medieval tradition in which the common folk elected one of their own “King for a Day.” El Rey Feo earns his crown by raising the most money for the LULAC Rey Feo Scholarship Committee. Miss Fiesta San Antonio is selected by the Fiesta Commission from among San Antonio college students through a community service project internship. The Queen of Soul provides a representative of the African American community and raises money for women’s scholarships. Miss San Antonio, an official preliminary to the Miss Texas and Miss America Pageants, has her own platform every year. This year’s representative has a nonprofit organization which helps economically disadvantaged deaf children and teens. The Charro Queen raises funds for the San Antonio Charro Association, a San Antonio tradition since 1947. (A “charro” is a flashy Mexican cowboy.) And just like El Rey Feo, La Reina de la Feria de las Flores (“Queen of the Flower Festival”) earns her crown by raising funds for the Rey Feo Scholarship Committee. The first reina was chosen in 1947 along with the first Ugly King. And the Woman’s Club of San Antonio chooses its Fiesta Teen Queen from among the daughters and granddaughters of the members of this 117-year-old organization with money raised also going to scholarships.

“Getting sick” is never on the itinerary when you’re on vacation. Unfortunately, life happens. Luckily, the Emergency Department at Nix Medical Center is in the heart of downtown and open 24/7, and our Team Triage Approach* means less time for you in the ER and more time enjoying San Antonio and having fun. Running a fever? Sprain an ankle? Whatever your emergency is, we’re here for you.

Tobin Center A Shining Beacon of Creativity “Give me a little moment to drink this all in for myself…this venue makes me want to recite Shakespeare”

-Paul McCartney October 1, 2014

Situated along the banks of the River in the city’s heart, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is a world-class venue, a shining beacon of creativity, and the nerve center for performing arts in San Antonio. There is no better place — anywhere — to see and hear a live performance. The doors just opened, September 4, 2014, and already it’s been listed among the top theater venues in the country and the world in Pollstar’s 2014 year end reports, coming in 61st out of the top 200 U.S. theaters, 79th in the world wide rankings and 14th in the worldwide rankings for theaters under 2000 seats. The Tobin Center has three venues. The state-of-the-art, multipurpose 1,759-seat H-E-B Performance Hall is open to performances and events of almost any sort. The acoustics in the Hall can be “tuned” to fit each individual performance from the expressive sound of the San Antonio Symphony to the roaring sound of Paul McCartney. Then there is the intimate 250-seat Carlos Alvarez studio theater, where the

acoustic vibes of Art Garfunkel lingered in the air like falling snowflakes. The River Walk Plaza is a perfect outdoor performance space for South Texas weather, where patrons not only get up close and personal to performers but are treated to a visual display of expression on the permanent 32 FT video wall. As the home to ten resident companies including the San Antonio Symphony, San Antonio Ballet, and Opera San Antonio, Tobin audiences see and hear performances of every genre. Patrons have enjoyed all sorts of acts including Paul McCartney, Vikki Carr, Santana, Art Garfunkel, Susan Boyle, Garrison Keller, Lyle Lovett and more. Adults, children, families - we’ve got something for everyone. Find out what’s happening at the Tobin by visiting our website www. tobincenter.org . Tickets to shows can be purchased at our website, by phone (210)223-8624 and by visiting the Tobin Center Box Office, open mon-fri 10am-6pm and Saturday 10am-2pm. The Tobin Center is located at 100 Auditorium Circle, San Antonio Texas, 78205

Viva Fiesta! By Carole Miller

The unique traditions of Fiesta such as medals, cascarones and papel picado bring an extra factor of frivolity and folly to this festival of fanciful fun. So come on and join the revelers covered in medals as they string up colorful paper decor, break cascarónes and proudly proclaim, “Viva Fiesta!” Local manufacturers estimate that the number of medals made over the years runs in to the hundreds of thousands. And Alamo Plaza Pin Pandemonium is the place to find whatever and whoever you want to find. Every year professional and amateur medal collectors gather to admire and trade pins and put themselves in a party mood for the parades and events to follow. Some ultra-creative medals feature designs with moving parts, 3D effects, sparkling colors and even LED lighting. This year’s Pin Pandemonium takes place Thursday, April 6, at 5 p.m. in Alamo Plaza. The goal during Fiesta is to get as many medals as you can. It’s a tradition for die-hard Fiesta-goers to adorn themselves with as many Fiesta medals as possible. Local medal heads proudly wear their multitude of medals pinned to sashes and hats during Fiesta. According to the Fiesta Commission, there are 17,000 medals sold at The Fiesta Store alone which serves as the “official” Fiesta store. But there are many more medals produced than you can count. Medal producers include charitable organizations, colleges and universities, hotels, restaurants, sports, events, churches, city areas and attractions, banks, doctors, judges and attorneys. Highly collectible medals include those from the district attorney, mayor, police chief and fire department. His Royal Highness King Antonio XLIX Charles Orsinger gets the historical nod for “inventing” the Fiesta medal by punching holes into his royal coins in 1971, stringing them with ribbon and handing them out to his loyal subjects that year. Today, all the Fiesta royalty give out their own individually-designed pins and many organizations sell their own as fundraisers. Businesses highlight their brands via pins and some individual Fiesta fanatics even make their own. Cascarones (kass-kah-ROW-nees) are emptied egg shells that are dyed like Easter eggs and filled with confetti. Then the opening is sealed with tissue paper. Cascarones can also be filled with other things such as flour, glitter and even perfume. During festivals, cascarones are broken over the heads of unsuspecting victims in the spirit of Fiesta fun. It is said to be good luck to be hit with a cascarone. And a word of advice to anyone

38

RIO Magazine

new to cascarones, you don’t actually break them over your victim/friend’s head. Crack the egg by simply squeezing it as you hold it above their head. Otherwise. . . well. . . ouch! It is believed that the crazy cascarone custom began in Renaissance Italy where it was a fun custom for women to flirt with members of the opposite sex by breaking eggs filled with cologne or other essences upon the heads of gentlemen when they weren’t looking. The man would then seek out the lady and attempt to do the same but without being seen. This fun game migrated from to Spain before making its way to Mexico (along with the piñata). The bright, tissue paper cut-outs seen decorating the Riverwalk are called papel picado, which literally means “chopped paper.” Just like our neighbors-to-the-north make paper snowflakes, our papel picado uses the same basic method using colorful papers that are then glued side-by-side on a long piece of string to create quick and economical decorations. The decorations have been used for centuries to hang outside homes during religious celebrations or inside for birthdays and other family celebrations. When the Spaniards arrived in Mexico there was already a tradition of paper making called amatl. The paper cuts made from amatl were primarily of a ceremonial nature and included images of the numerous Aztec gods and goddesses. These paper banners were hung to represent the seasonal appearance of new foliage, appease the chief rain gods and protect their upcoming crop season from drought. After the Spanish Conquest, the tissue paper used to wrap fragile porcelain imports from China became the material of choice for these banners. This paper, still called papel de china, oftentimes bore the intricate, stenciled designs of Chinese ceramics. San Antonio’s Fiesta is all about fun with a heaping helping of tradition so go ahead and crack a cascarone, earn a medal or two (or 100), string up some decorations and help yourself to as much food on a stick as you can eat. Viva Fiesta to all our visitors! www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Live Music Fans Are SEGUIN

By Edmond Ortiz

Miles Terracina, a local musician, offers these tips to guide you through the local music scene. “Being a die-hard music fan, the number of establishments in San Antonio catering to my specific tastes has grown substantially,” according to Terracina. Locals are all familiar with two downtown mainstays, Pat O’Brien’s and Howl at the Moon. Pat O’s is a large, multi-level restaurant that entertains with live bands such as Mike Valliere and the Lonestar Rejects, and Love Hangover. Howl at the Moon has dueling pianists covering classic and contemporary hits, as well as anthems and an immeasurable number of requests, keeping the party-feel going all night. Venues hosting concerts with epic scale architecture make the location as entertaining as who is on stage. While the 1929 Majestic Theatre is San Antonio’s largest atmospheric theatre featuring a serene Mediterranean village feel the 1913 Charline McCombs Empire Theatre offers a European palazzo design. And the 1926 Aztec Theatre’s Meso-American Architecture was recently restored and joined the other two theatres who have long served as a hub for live music and other special events. The range of musical acts at the historic Aztec run the gamut. Recent acts to visit the Aztec include blues legend Buddy Guy, country singer/songwriter Cory Morrow, and Christian metal band The Devil Wears Prada. Established in 1933, The Esquire Tavern is the oldest River Walk bar. The large red neon sign spelling out the swanky cocktail bar’s name cannot

Austin may be the “the live music capital of the world,” but San Antonio holds its’ own with plenty of quality special venues, restaurants, bars and clubs that play host to a variety of live musical acts.

be missed driving down Commerce Street. Musicians known to visit The Esquire include Doc Watkins, The Tom Kat String Band, and Brent Watkins and South Texas Jazz. Add to this the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, host to unique, fun shows such as a collaboration between the San Antonio Symphony and swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Tobin is home to a handful of local musical and dance organizations including the San Antonio Symphony. Another popular hot spot is Sam’s Burger Joint a quick cab ride from downtown. “Sam’s Burger Joint hosts live music regularly from Americana, folk rock, alt rock or country bands, and from time to time they host other genres of music as well,” Terracina says, adding that Sam’s adds to a growing variety of entertainment options in the neighborhood. Don’t forget to enjoy a big, juicy burger there, too. Fun live music options are popping up in the Southtown/King William/Lone Star area just south of downtown, against the backdrop of a vibrant arts scene. “Southtown 101 is a bar that doubles as a venue for live DJs,” Terracina says. “Southtown 101 leaves pretension at the door as well as the intensity of electronic dance music, expect these DJs to lay down some old school house music.”

Live Music Fans are A ll Ears continued North of downtown, bars and nightclubs on North St. Mary’s Street and near the San Antonio Public Library bring in crowds who love local live music.”Beginning with Bond’s and The Korova, the northwest quadrant of downtown is home to a more down-to-earth, locals-only vibe,” Terracina says. “The Korova and Bond’s fall more under the category of live music venue, showcasing talent from around the country and Texas.” The Cove is also in the area just north of downtown, between San Pedro Avenue and Fredericksburg Road. A unique if not quirky blend of casual, family-friendly restaurant, beer garden, car wash and Laundromat, The Cove accommodates folk, country and jazz musicians, among others.

Just east of downtown, Tucker’s Kozy Korner on East Houston Street is home to famed local jazz bandleader Jim Cullum and friends on Monday nights, and DJs most other nights. The new Alamo City Music Hall is across Houston Street from Tucker’s. Formerly Backstage Live, the music hall is luring more independent and edgier rock, EDM and hip-hop acts from around the nation. Options to enjoy live music outside the center of town are plentiful. John T. Floore Country Store,in Helotes, has hosted legendary performers such as Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, B.B. King, Bob Dylan and Robert Earl Keen over its history that spans more than 60 years. It’s a true Texas honky tonk, a must-see for any fan of Texan and Americana music. What Luna Music Bar and Lounge lacks in size, it more than makes up for with intimacy, romantic ambiance and character. This happening venue is located just south of North Star Mall, where patrons dance to the sounds of Latin music on Wednesdays. Different genres of music, jazz, soul, R&B, blues or funk, play Thursdays through Saturdays. Any night of the week you drop in you are sure to be entertained. The 502 Bar near the Santikos Embassy Oaks Movie Theater has built up a reputation for hosting up-and-coming, independent rock and urban musical acts, along with an impressive selection of craft beers on tap. Last but not least is Cowboys Dancehall. A huge dance hall at Loop 410 and Interstate 35, Cowboys has concerts with rising and established country music stars, in addition to a house band.

Antiquing in

Boerne & Comfort By Ron Aaron Eisenberg

For visitors to San Antonio (and locals too) there is a treasure trove of great antique shops within an hour or less of the Alamo City in the near-by Hill Country. A day of antiquing is so much more than the antiques themselves, it’s the whole experience. You won’t be disappointed when visiting these two towns. In a day and age when antique dealers are moving away from store fronts to the internet and eBay, it’s great to know antiquing is alive and well in south Texas. Head north from San Antonio for 45 miles on IH 10 to Comfort, Texas, for your first stop of the day. You will have passed Boerne, Texas, which you can visit on your way back to San Antonio. The trip to Comfort will take you under an hour. There you will find literally dozens of Antique and Collectible Stores from which to choose. The town was settled in 1854 and many of the original structures are still in use today. Population is just over 2,300 people. A great way to get a feel for the community is to walk up and down High Street, the main drag. You cannot get lost. Some of the more interesting antique & collectible shops include • Wilson Clements that features rustic furniture, antique doors, religious artifacts and more. It also offers primitive Mexican and European furniture. • The Comfort Antique Mall houses 30 antique and collectible vendors showcasing merchandise from colonial times to the 1950s.

• Stuff & More carries antique stuff, vintage stuff, and a whole lot of other stuff.

• Blackbird Antiques & Interiors is packed with varied collections of new and old items -- from early primitives to cottage home furnishings, Pinecone Hill Bedding, Trapp Candles, plus old quilts, painted antique furniture and more.

The town also has a number of fine and casual dining restaurants most located in the historic old town district. Three wineries are also located in Comfort. All offer regular tastings. Grab a cup of coffee and breakfast or lunch at High’s Café & Store. And if you have the time, spend an hour just sitting and sipping coffee while listening to the locals chitchat and gossip about their community. High’s is open all day and into the night when it features happy hour specials and drinks. For more information on Comfort check out: www.shopcomfort.com or call the Comfort Chamber Of Commerce at (830) 995-3131.

Once you have covered all of comfort, head south on IH 10 for 15 miles back to Boerne, population just under 11,000. Like Comfort, German immigrants founded Boerne in 1849. The main street features a number of antique and collectible shops, which, as in Comfort, cover the gamut in terms of their inventory. But Boerne is also home to one of the most unusual antique shops you will ever find. Lisa Obriotti’s mom, Billie Shaw, opened Carousel Antiques & Pickles 31 years ago. It began as an antiques and collectibles shop. But when business slowed Billie began putting out her homemade pickles for customers to taste. The pickles proved to be so popular people began asking if they could buy them. The rest is history.

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com RIO Magazine 47

A ntiquing in Boerne & Comfort continued Today people who come to Fickle Pickles for the tasty veggies often end up buying antiques from one of the vendors who rent space in the store. Others, who may come for the antiques, invariably end up purchasing jars of pickles. The store ships pickles literally around the world – from New York City, to Finland and Japan.

For more information on Boerne check out the Chamber of Commerce’s website at www.boerne.org. For even more information on antiquing in the Texas Hill Country visit: www.hillcountryportal.com/ hillcountryantiques.html.

Obriotti, who owns the store with her husband Jake, says, “The antique business has changed a great deal in recent years because of eBay and the internet. There are fewer and fewer stores selling antiques,” she says. “But here in Boerne, in just two blocks on Main Street, we have something like 5 stores including the Antique Mall and the Boerne Emporium.” But for Obriotti, pickles truly are the store’s bread and butter. Sheila Spengler, one of the vendors selling antiques and collectible at Hill Country Antiques, two doors north of Fickle Pickles on Main Street, echoes Obriotti’s words. “There just aren’t that many antique and collectible shops around. We’re one of the few,” she says. In Boerne, as in Comfort, there are several such stores all within walking distance. Boerne is also home to several fine restaurants. The city also features Ye Kendall Inn, which opened in 1859 as The Old Reed House, a stagecoach stop. The hotel, which sits across from the public square in the center of town, attracts visitors from all over the country and around the world, in part because it is said to be haunted by the original owners. If you have the time, stop at the Inn-you might just get to meet a ghost.

Hill Country Antiques features fine collectible china and a whole lot more.
