Letter from the Editor

The Official Magazine of the River Walk

Publisher Louis Doucette Louis@travelingblender.com

Food Glorious Food! Please Sir, could I have some more? More? You want more? Yes, please. Hi, my name’s Paula and I’m a food-a-holic. If there was a 12-step program for food, I would NOT enroll because frankly, I’m okay with my addiction. But, and this is a BIG exception, it has to be good food. It can be simple, gourmet, comfort, eclectic, fusion, ethnic--you name it, but it HAS to be good. As a visitor you may have heard Tex-Mex food is standard fare in San Antonio. Yes, we love Tex-Mex, and yes, it’s amazing. But we also have an astonishing assortment of ethnic cuisines, Southern and American standards and of course barbeque. Check out my personal Top 10 List of favorite restaurants on page 36. Close to downtown is the Pearl Brewery, a vibrant core for food exploration, and home to the Culinary Institute of America. A fabulous Farmer’s Market is held here every Saturday and Sunday, where you can sample and purchase boutique cheeses, local honey, nuts and baked goods while strolling on the riverside grounds of this fantastically converted old brewery. This issue of RIO is dedicated to food-- now who do you think came up with that topic? I hope you will enjoy all kinds of delicious food on the River Walk and then venture out a bit. Explore downtown and some of our surrounding areas. San Antonio is the sort of place you have to visit many times and even then, you will not have seen all there is to see, done all there is to do—or tasted everything there is to eat! Bon Appetit!

River Walk

Fine Food and

Magical Mood by Bob McCullough

Las Canarias

Bella on the River

Boudro's Texas Bistro

When the atmosphere is right, the food simply seems to taste better. And what better, moreappetizing atmosphere is there than the romantic River Walk, or Paseo del Rio, as it embraces the San Antonio River flowing through the heart of the Alamo City? Towering trees, twinkling lights and shimmering waters combine to create a truly magical mood. Riverfront dining began in 1946, and other eateries began to follow especially around the time of the Hemisfair international exposition in 1968. Today, the culinary choices are many including some of San Antonio’s finest dining establishments. Generally speaking, the Paseo del Rio restaurants offering gourmet cuisine fall into three groupings in terms of specialties – steak, seafood and a combination of the two. Succulent steaks such as the center-cut prime rib and filet mignon assume superstar status at Little Rhein Steak House located within the historic Otto Bombach House at the eastern gateway to the La Villita historic district, the restaurant opened in 1967 just as Hemisfair started to focus more attention on downtown San Antonio and the River Walk. The ambience offers guests a tiptoe through yesteryear with vintage signs, works of art and memorabilia covering large portions of the thick limestone walls. Next-door to Little Rhein is Fig Tree, who also excel at steaks and other entrees such as beef wellington, Fig Tree-style. When the weather cooperates, many patrons prefer to dine on the tiered outdoor patio. The Fig Tree complex also includes a house built around 1850 by physician and later newspaper editor Maj. Jeremiah Dashiell. It’s listed on the National 12

RIO Magazine

Register of Historic Places and fronts two other outdoor dining areas – the flagstone-paved River Plaza and the brick-paved Garden Plaza. The newest river rendezvous for prime beef is Ruth’s Chris Steak House located on river level within the Grand Hyatt San Antonio hotel. The menu leans heavily toward sizzling steaks, however other choices including lobster, lamb chops and marinated chicken complement the many specialty cuts of meat. In the forefront of the prime seafood category lies Ostra, located within the Mokara Hotel and Spa featuring an oyster bar (along with fresh crabs, shrimp and ceviche) and other sustainably sourced seafood choices such as tuna tacos with tomato and cucumber poke, crispy wonton and wasabi mayo and blackened redfish with Converse Gristmill polenta and wilted spinach. Executive Chef Benjamin Knack heads the culinary team at Ostra as well as across the river at Las Canarias in the Omni La Mansion del Rio hotel. Las Canarias specialties include shrimp and grits made with wildcaught shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico, house-made chorizo, roasted peppers and smoked tomatoes. Both Ostra and Las Canarias have been recognized as AAA Four Diamond restaurants. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Shrimp and grits as well as blackened prime rib highlight the menu at Boudro’s Texas Bistro. Now led by Chef Robbie Nowlin, the restaurant started in 1986 is a legend on the River Walk thanks to their food, service and atmosphere. Diners can eat inside the limestone structure or outdoors just inches away from the San Antonio River, with its passing parade of barges and ducks that cruise the waterway. Outdoor comforts include space heaters and Mexican ponchos. In a sense, Boudro’s offers dinner and a show, the latter being the tableside preparation of guacamole in which a skilled culinary artist transforms ripe avocados, roasted roma tomatoes, serrano pepper, red onions, cilantro and fresh lime and orange juices into creamy green goodness. Boudro’s guacamole has become so popular that the recipe is readily available for do-it-yourselfers on the restaurant’s website.

Seating a maximum of 45 at candle-lit tables, Bella on the River offers an intimate dining room reminiscent of a small Spanish bistro or Italian grotto with Chef Sean Fletcher in charge of the kitchen. Bella’s focus is Southern European cuisine (mostly Mediterranean) that includes delights such as Spanish seafood paella. More than once it’s been recognized in the San Antonio Express-News Critics’ Choice Awards for Best River Walk Dining. All of the River Walk fine-dining restaurants share many of the same traits – long-time employees skilled in attending to the minutest of details; fresh, locally sourced foodstuffs used in preparation of the delectable dishes; and extensive wine lists (some award-winning) with choices from around the world. Combining these ingredients with precise food preparation and blending with romantic River Walk atmosphere more often than not result in magnificent meals and magical memories.

— Jim Bowie

Had Boudro’s been serving on the River Walk back then, Jim Bowie could have carved his Center Cut Top Sirloin with a butter knife. Prime steaks, Gulf Coast seafood and the best Margaritas around have made Boudro’s one of the Alamo City’s most loved restaurants. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Q: A:

How do you tell if someone is from Texas? Just give them a few minutes and they will tell you.

Texans are proud of their state, heritage and history and for good reason.

Interesting facts about Texas H Dr Pepper was invented in Waco, Texas in 1885. There is no period in Dr Pepper. H It is still a hanging offense in Texas to steal cattle or put graffiti on someone else’s cow. It is also illegal to indecently expose or swear in front of a corpse in Texas. H Texas’ nickname is “The Lone Star State” as a reminder of its struggle for independence from Mexico, and to represent Texas as an independent Republic. H The famous battle cry, “Remember the Alamo”, is often attributed to Sam Houston but was actually coined by Texas General Sidney Sherman. H Texas is the largest petroleum producing state in the US. If it were an independent nation again it would rank as the world’s 5th largest petroleum producing nation. H The city of Slaughter, Texas has never had a murder.

january

Important dates in the history of Texas for the month of January. January 31, 1859

William Menger opened his hotel, now a landmark, on Alamo Plaza in San Antonio. It is one of the best known lodging houses in Texas, guests have included O. Henry, Ulysses S. Grant and Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt actually recruited many of his famous Rough Riders in the bar at the hotel. January 29, 1861

The Secession Convention of the State of Texas voted overwhelmingly to secede from the United States. This set the stage for Texans to fight and lose a bloody civil war. January 20, 1881

The first issue of the San Antonio Light newspaper was published. In October 1992, the Hearst Corporation purchased the rival ExpressNews newspaper and subsequently closed the Light. January 10, 1901

The Spindletop oilfield was discovered on a salt dome south of Beaumont, marking the birth of the modern petroleum industry. January 1, 1925

Governor Pat Neff appointed an all-woman state Supreme Court, the first in Texas and probably the nation. January 28, 1986

The space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after takeoff killing seven American astronauts including Texas resident Judith Arlene Resnik. She was the second American woman astronaut. These fun and interesting facts are provided courtesy of The Republic of Texas Restaurant celebrating 40 years on the San Antonio River Walk. Downtown

A LOCALS Guide

to Places By Carole Miller There are many out-of-the-way places to dine and drink in the downtown area but these six hot spots are truly where the locals go. We’ve paired them up with several great ways to explore and tour. Enjoy some of the best food and fun in the Alamo City all within downtown. Since 1958 locals have known, Mexican Manhattan as one of the best places for lunch, happy hour, dinner, or anytime for delicious Mexican food. Likewise, the mission of O’liva is to provide fresh, healthy, farm-to-table cuisine. Try the Ba Burger, a lamb burger topped with a local fried egg and tapenade or the Chef’s Table, a smorgasbord of entrees and sides for lunch. The local motto is everything’s better with gravy or beer and MK Davis restaurant can deliver both. For a good, down-home meal this Alamo City classic is known for its ice cold schooners of beer, delicious fried chicken and ol’ fashioned, Texas hospitality. If you don’t find religion at Tucker’s Kozy Korner during their Sunday Gospel Brunch, then you just aren’t lookin’ very hard. Every Sunday, this San Antonio institution is the place for chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, grits, sweet potato hash, bottomless mimosas and a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar while the DJ plays Motown oldies. Are you in the mood for a cold beer? Look no further than The Friendly Spot, a Texas Ice House serving good eats ‘til midnight every day along with more than 250 bottled brews, 76 on draft beers and free Wifi. The Friendly Place is also kid, pet, vegetarian and vegan friendly. That’s a lot of friendly!

Downtown SA is home two green modes of transportation. Both offer the freedom and fun to get around without paying to park. Scooter Power Tours offer hourly or 24-hour rentals and are available at night. It looks like a child’s scooter only with a surprising amount of power and it’s small enough to take inside while dining and touring. It covers 20 miles to a charge. A 24-hour rental is only $80 with quick-charging batteries provided. Also offered is a 2-hour tour covering King William, La Villita, Southtown, Blue Star, Museum Reach on the River Walk and Mission Concepcion. For a futuristic-looking mode of transportation go to SegCity Segway Tours. Request a private 2 1/2 hour tour for $120 per rider or less for groups of 6 or more. Battery operated, they achieve a top speed of 12 mph. One-hour guided tours starts $50 and cover all the points of interest downtown. Longer tours cover King William and the southern part of the River Walk. Located on the outskirts of downtown is The Cove restaurant serving SOL (sustainable, organic, local) food, a Texas Beer Garden with more than 50 Texas beers on tap, a live music venue and, of course, a laundromat and carwash. The folks at The Cove work with local ranchers and farmers to bring locally raised, humanely-treated, grass-fed meats, free-range turkey, eggs and local, organic produce. The Cove is an affordable Yellow Cab ride away. Download the “Hail A Cab” app or simply call (210)222-2222.

Their chips and salsa are my absolute favorite anywhere in town, bar-none. I ask for my own bowl cuz I don’t share! Everything is good but my favorite entrée is enchiladas verdes. The empanadas and fajitas are great too.

Mama’s Café (2442 Nacogdoches Rd.)

Homey food and fun atmosphere make this my favorite place to dine with my 13-yr-old son. Chalkboards feature daily fresh side dishes and specials, license plates line the walls and mini juke boxes are at the booths.

Sorrento Ristorante e Pizzeria (5146 Broadway)

I would walk a mile, barefoot, in the rain, for a dish of Rigatone Alla Sorrento made with their signature pink sauce, sausage, and tender broad noodles forming spicy little bites from heaven. Lasagna and pizza are also to die for.

La Tuna Grill (100 Probandt)

Known for their burgers, sliders and fried mushrooms, this is the place I go for the best lamb sandwich in town. The sweet chutney is perfect with the warm meat and soft bread. Bands on the weekend.

Candlelight Coffeehouse (3011 N. St. Mary’s St.) I think of Candlelight as a coffee bar, but it also serves wine, food, dessert and Sunday brunch. I go for the atmosphere and vintage furnishings. People are on laptops, playing games, laughing or meeting-up with friends. Smoke Shack BBQ (3714 Broadway St.) The brisket and ribs melt in your mouth. I love the sweet glaze that comes with the ribs. Order your meat by the pound or on a plate with sides. Don’t miss the brisket mac n cheese either. Nice selection of local craft beer.

Panchito’s Mexican Restaurant (4100 McCullough Ave)

Country French inspired cuisine without the fussy atmosphere, prices, or snootiness. Menu features dishes not found elsewhere in town. French onion soup, pate, beef croquettes, seafood crepes, beef bourguignon and mussel’s marinieres. Casual dress and good service.

The egg foo young and gravy are amazing. Even if you don’t like the dish elsewhere, try it here. Since 1983 the owners, Hsiu and John, provide consistently good food and service. Traditional Chinese décor and an enormous bouquet of fresh flowers are on display at the entrance.

This is my go to place for freshly baked muffins. The open production kitchen is spotless and pastries are displayed and sold right from the rolling carts as they come out of the ovens. Great coffee. Can’t decide what to order? They have an enormous sampling board to help or maybe just encourage you to buy more.

Thai Lao Orchid (116 Broadway) Vietnamese crispy spring rolls, served with a tangy sauce, cilantro and crisp lettuce is the Thai equivalent of a crispy taco. Miso soup, potstickers and pad thai are also favorites.

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.

a food destination on its own

Fresh oysters and other seafood delights abound at Shuck Shack.

Jeff Balfour, long-time Executive Chef at the Hotel Valencia, is now co-owner of Southerleigh, an acclaimed brewpub that showcases his modern take on Texas fare paired with outstanding housemade beers by brewer Les Locke. Balfour’s seasonally-changing menu incorporates dishes from Texas’ cross-cultural cuisines—from soft pretzels with beer cheese and house-made mustard to made-to-order seafood boils and wood-fired specialties. Most of all, the food is thoughtfully meant to pair with their seasonal beers and carefully curated wine list.

Since the 1800s, when the famed Chili Queens served their home cooked specialties in the streets of downtown San Antonio, the Alamo City has maintained its reputation as the world capital of Tex-Mex. Renowned institutions like Mi Tierra, La Fonda on Main, and Los Barrios continue attracting enthusiasts seeking this iconic cuisine. But today, there’s a lot more to San Antonio’s dining scene than tamales, puffy tacos, and margaritas. Ethnic influences and local ingredients are staples on restaurant menus, high end mixology is a household word, and trendy food truck parks are popping up all across the city. San Antonio’s rise from Tex-Mex capital to eclectic dining destination has captured the attention of national celebrity chefs and media. Award-winning local chefs Andrew Weissman and Jason Dady were pioneers in bringing new, exciting restaurant concepts using unusual flavor combinations and modern techniques to create their signature, cuttingedge fare. Dady, alongside his wife Crystal and brother Jake, have built a small empire of properties beloved by the San Antonio community, including Tre Trattoria, Tre Enoteca, Two Bros. BBQ, B&D Icehouse, and his newest endeavor, the playful, family-friendly Shuck Shack oyster bar. Day is also a pioneer in San Antonio’s food truck movement with his DUK Truck, which pops up at truck parks and special events with amazing fish tacos, whimsical veggies, and Thai-inspired surprises. But perhaps the most important event contributing to San Antonio’s rise as a dining mecca was the opening of The Culinary Institute of America at the historic Pearl Brewery the same year, spurring the birth of a 20acre culinary-centric development that today includes a farmers’ market and 14 restaurants offering something for everyone. Chef Wisseman was one of the first tenants at Pearl with two different concepts, Sandbar Fish House, an upscale oyster bar, and Il Sogno, an Italian trattoria. Chef McHugh has developed celeb status of his own with his acclaimed Cured, a lovely restaurant bar that features a unique humidity-controlled locker displaying their house-cured meats, as well as a seasonal list of specialty cocktails. 40

RIO Magazine

Next door, Chef Jeff White – an advocate of local farmers and founding member of the non-profit Chefs Collective - helms the Boiler House, a Texas grill and wine garden with a neo-rustic ambiance set in one of Pearl’s three remaining original structures. Latin American food is well represented at the lively La Gloria, where Chef Johnny Hernandez dishes his take on the street foods of Mexico City, and at Nao, a sleek space where traditional Latin flavors get a modern makeover. The recently-opened Hotel Emma, boasting the stunning Sternewirth craft cocktail bar as well as Supper, a New American bistro, is the not-to-be-missed crowning jewel at Pearl. Things are also shaking just south of Downtown in the King William District, where a number of eateries are turning the area into a must-visit for food and drink enthusiasts. The hip and casual gastropub Feast and its fun and funky Asian fusion sister Hot Joy are known for adventurous menus and eclectic atmospheres. At Bliss, high-end New American cuisine is served in elegant surroundings, while those seeking a more casual dinner should visit Bite, Chef Lisa Astorga-Watel’s Pop Art-inspired bistro. And then there’s the undefinable Feast, serving creative Mediterranean-influenced sharable plates in a stunning ultra-modern dining room, outfitted with glass orb chandeliers and transparent acrylic furniture. And there you have it. From elegant fine dining to experimental cuisine and contemporary global flavors, San Antonio’s growing dining scene is proving to be the whole enchilada. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Comfort Foods Like Hugs from Grandma

by Ron Aaron Eisenberg

Comfort food is remarkably satisfying. Eating comfort food feeds not only our tummy, but our soul. It reminds us of home, family and our youth. Food has the power to connect us to our personal heritage and our cultural background.

find it almost everywhere. For Texans it’s true comfort food. Lulu’s Bakery and Café, open 24-hours a day and known for their generous Texas-sized portions, serve it up with other southern side dish comfort foods like mashed potatoes and fried okra. Mmm-good.

cuisine comfort food. While split pea soup crosses many culture lines theirs is distinctly German and amazing when paired with slices of their thick brown bread. Other comfort dishes include Reuben sandwiches, potato pancakes, Wienerschnitzel, and hot mustard. Anything you order pairs nicely with the homemade root beer served in a frosty cold mug. Tell me that doesn’t bring back great memories.

Most of us have fond child memories of macaroni and cheese. Some grandmas stirred in creamed corn as their secret to keeping it moist while others topped it with breadcrumbs for a light crunch. According to the owner of Mr. & Mrs. G’s Home Cooking they use lots of three simple ingredients: butter, cheese and love. But you gotta go early cause they only serve it on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and when it’s gone, it’s gone. And you will most definitely regret leaving town without tasting Hard Rock Café’s “Twisted Mac & Cheese” laced with a 3-cheese sauce and chucks of roasted red peppers. Bam, take that grandma! The historic Barn Door Restaurant, known for great steaks, also offers up mac n cheese made-to-order with your choice of a crunchy bread-crumb topping or plain.

If you grew up in an Italian household nothing says “mangia” like chicken parmigiana. And no one does it better than The Palm restaurant. Located downtown on Houston Street, they offer the perfect bold red wines to pair with your traditional Italian dish form heaven.

Breakfast is another rich source for comfort food. The Guenther House Restaurant is well known to San Antonians for its pancakes and sweet cream waffles, plus amazing biscuits and gravy. The restaurant opened in 1988 to showcase Pioneer Brand products. The Pioneer Flour Mill opened in San Antonio in 1898. Their flour and mixes are sold in grocery stores throughout the south.

While you won’t find chicken fried steak in many northern state restaurants, down south you’ll

Schilo’s Delicatessen, located in the heart of downtown since 1917, serves traditional German

Lucky for us all, San Antonio takes comfort food seriously serving-up tasty dishes of home-style comfort throughout town--just like grandma used to make.

DeWese’s Tip Top Café located 15 minutes from downtown serves their signature chicken fried steak with peppery white gravy that is as delicious as the chicken itself. People have been known to lick the plate. Other comfort food on the menu includes mile-high meringue pie with a secret ingredient distinctive to Tip-Top. Their onion-rings are homemade, breaded-by-hand and made to order. Tip Top even serves an oldtime comfort dish, liver and onions.

Mi Tierra, located in Market Square, is a San Antonio tradition. Everything on their menu is comfort food to their countless loyal fans. They offer traditional Mexican food 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Their huevos rancheros, menudo, and caldo are each iconic comfort foods for the masses. Just like when you ate at Grandma’s house you should probably loosen your belt a notch cause you’re in for a comfort food treat. www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

FOOD-TRUCKING > > > > By Susan Yerkes

Food trucks are hot. These boxy purveyors of meals on wheels have exploded across the American eating scene, proliferating like mobile mushrooms after a good rain. So it should be no surprise that local weather favors al fresco dining pretty much year-round and has created a thriving food truck scene. While roaming food trucks can be spotted all around town one of the best ways to sample the mobile meals in these parts is at one of the area’s permanent food truck parks. These open-air collections offer convenient seating, restrooms, music and some offer a myriad of changing culinary options and convivial atmospheres. They’re a great way for budding chefs to get established, and for established restaurants to expand their brand. And the city’s robust food scene, fed by the nationally renowned Culinary Institute of America branch here, creates even more energy and appetite for the foodtrucking phenomenon. Today you’ll find food parks in locations from downtown to the suburbs, all within an easy halfhour drive from the bustling River Walk. Each has its own ambience, with an ever-changing scene depending on the day and hour. It’s best to check each park’s Facebook page (and they

all have them) for updates when you’re making plans for a food truck foray.

Just blocks from the heart of the River Walk you’ll find Alamo Street Eat Bar, at 609 S. Alamo in the historic Acapulco Drive Inn has developed an enthusiastic following. Open until midnight most weekdays and 2 a.m. on the weekends, it’s a popular place to watch a Spurs game on the big outside TV, or get a late night snack or drink after an evening downtown. Favorite local beers are always on tap, and trucks including Cullum’s Attaboy Burgers, SAbores , known for its “ifries” (French fries with Mexican-style beef and gravy) and Duke’s Seafood are part of the regular line-up. A few blocks north of downtown on Broadway Street you’ll find the city’s newest food tuck park, Pinks Patio. Pinks is a food truck park on steroids. In addition to food trucks such as Gallo de Jalisco’ Taqueria truck, Big Guido’s, Luigi’s and Snoopy’s Snow Cones & More, Pinks features patio seating, an indoor sports bar, live and DJ music, and art-focused nights. Further from downtown, near the University of Texas at San Antonio’s main campus, The Block Food Truck Park boasts an energetic young

vibe and a wide assortment of food trucks. The picnic tables, both indoors and out are often packed, and food trucks including Chela’s Tacos, Smoke BBQ, Mr. Fish Baja Fish Tacos, Crazy Carl’s Burgers, Puerto Rican Grub Express, Gus’ Empanadas and Tikos Chamoyadas are popular regulars here. A little further north of town, the Point Park & Eats, on Boerne Stage Road near I-10 is another rocking place. Family-friendly and casually hip, The Point prides itself on local craft brews and a busy bar, with food trucks ranging from the Caliente Grill, Senor Pinky’s pulled pork, Mosaic Mediterranean, Benjie’s Munch and Gilbo’s Grill Look for venison chili at Busto Bistro, or Scratch Bistro’s bison burger. One of The Point’s more eclectic attractions is the Space Cowboy Art-O-Mat, a converted cigarette machine that dispenses funky original art pieces. Live music is often on tap here as well. The fluid food truck line-up at all the parks guarantees visitors a variety of tastes and makes every outing an adventure, and the laid-back atmosphere and affordable offerings, from snacks to heaping platters, promise memorable meals. Once you get started, you may just want to keep on food-trucking until you’ve tried them all!
