FROM THE

September IN BROOMFIELD

I

f you live in Broomfield, it is the most wonderful time of the year! September is filled with community engagements and opportunities galore. From high school football and homecoming events – plus the BHS Sports Gala (see page 14), to Broomfield Dancing with the Stars (see page 20), and of course, Broomfield Days (check out page 24-25), the calendar is full! As a lifelong resident, my mental memory book is filled with vivid recollections from all of the above covering several decades. I watched my brother and friends carry the Broomfield Eagles to a State Football Championship in 1984 and in the years that followed I was the captain of the BHS cheer squad for our town’s own version of Friday Night Lights. Several years ago, as an alum and parent, I proudly attended the first BHS Sports Gala, an alternative to traditional sports fundraising given life by a very close friend. Two years ago, in one of my top 10 most memorable moments ever, I danced in Dancing with the Broomfield Stars, and was honored to take part in this amazing fundraising event which for me led to a new life-changing hobby, as I have become a ballroom dancer in the time since. Don’t even get me started on Broomfield Days! In year’s past, I have shared specific Broomfield Days stories in this column but with the news of a new (renewed?) element this year, a fresh rush of memories has come back to the forefront. Senior Resources of Broomfield is bringing back the Street Dance. I am not sure of the exact years of the original Broomfield Days Street Dance, but it was definitely alive and well in the 1980s when I was a teen. After the vendors broke down, the park had cleared out just a bit, and the sun was dropping in the sky, people would re-emerge with a clean shirt and a big smile, as the music started just east of the fire station in Midway Park. While a very close tie with the parade – this was the BEST part of Broomfield Days. Dancing with friends and family after a day of community pride and celebration, with the bite of fall weather in the air. There was nothing better. The Street Dance returns on Friday night, Sept. 14 as a fundraising event sponsored by Senior Resources of Broomfield. For just $20 per ticket ($5 for children), you can support a great Broomfield organization, enjoy music performed by Broomfield’s own Phil Long and Friends as well as The Paul Glover Group, and dance with hundreds of friends and neighbors. I promise – you won’t want to miss this!

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2018

Brings Back the Street Dance Don’t Miss the September 14 Celebration to Kick-off Broomfield Days Broomfield Days showcases all the best that our community has to offer in one weekend. How we help our neighbors in need is just of one of our community values on display during the annual celebration. This year, Senior Resources of Broomfield (SRB) is proud to bring new life to a Broomfield Days activity of yesteryear, all in the spirit of lending a hand to local seniors in need. SRB is sponsoring a charity fundraiser on Friday night, Sept. 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. – The Broomfield Days Street Dance featuring music by local favorite Phil Long & Friends, as well as the Paul Glover Group. For just $20 per ticket for adults and $5 for children, you can dance the night away in Midway Park (South side of the park, at the Main Stage near the Fire Station) with hundreds of friends and neighbors while supporting a vital local organization. The event will also feature food trucks and a beer garden. “Senior Resources is beyond excited to bring the Street Dance back to Broomfield Days in a way that will help countless local seniors with unmet nutritional, medical, transportation, and other urgent needs. This event allows us to gain awareness with and gather support from a larger audience than ever before – and the impact of funds raised will be just as significant,” said Ben Vagher, President of the SRB Board. “We are thrilled to welcome our performers for this event – with special thanks to a favorite son of Broomfield, Phil Long. This will be a fun evening for all members of the community!”

Did you know that Broomfield’s older adult population doubled in size between 2005 and 2015? In 2015, 16% of Broomfielders were 60 or older. This number will grow to 28% by 2020. SRB helps seniors through nutrition programs, including Meals on Wheels, and community resource programs, such as loans of medical equipment, caregiver respite, and funding for hearing aids and dental work. SRB is also expanding its support programs into transportation assistance and advocacy for seniors. SRB actively partners with the City of Broomfield’s Senior Services Department to connect with Broomfield Seniors and provide vital financial support for urgent needs – enhancing the quality of life of Broomfield’s seniors. Tickets for the Street Dance can be purchased in advance online at www.BroomfieldSeniorResources.org or purchased at the gate for $20 for adults and $5 for kids. All gate ticket sales are CASH ONLY. The Street Dance is just one of the events that SRB sponsors at Broomfield Days. If golfing is more your speed than dancing, grab your friends and join the Broomfield Days Golf Tournament at Eagle Trace Golf Course in Broomfield, also on Sept. 14. Proceeds of the annual tournament help enhance quality of life for Broomfield seniors in need through SRB’s programs. Don’t miss out on this exciting Shotgun (four-person scramble) event – this year featuring a $1 million hole in one contest! Finally, don’t miss SRB’s Annual Rock ‘n Roll Classic Cool Car Show, all day Saturday, Sept. 15 on the South side of Midway Park toward Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church. For more information about SRB or its events, to register for golf or buy tickets in advance for the Street Dance, or to DONATE today, please visit: www.BroomfieldSeniorResources.org.

Broomfield High School’s

Annual Sports Gala Moves to September By Kristen Beckman

Broomfield High School’s much-anticipated annual sports gala, organized by the Eagles Boosters organization, will move this year to the fall. The event will be held September 22 at Wonderland Brewery.

T

he Eagle Sports Gala got its start in 2010, when John Long, then Broomfield High School’s athletic director, wanted to find a better way to raise funds for the school’s athletic programs. Until that point, athletes at the school, like many athletes across the country, were asked to sell food, discount cards, and other fundraising items door-to-door, often with only a small percentage of proceeds coming back to the programs they were meant to support, Long said. In addition, community members and local businesses were showing some signs of fatigue at being hit up over and over to buy fundraising items or make donations. Long decided to try a different approach — a silent auction dinner and dance designed to raise all the needed funds for the school’s athletic programs in one night during a fun event for the community. The efforts of Long, the school’s coaches, and several parents and booster members were successful. Nine years later, the event has become a muchanticipated annual gala that brings together parents, alumni, and the community to support the school’s athletic programs. The event has raised more than $466,000 to date, and funds have been used for a wide variety of purposes, including purchasing new weights for the weight room, building a concession stand for the gym, helping all teams buy new uniforms and bags, purchasing all-weather

coats for the girls and boys soccer teams, installing a new timing system for the swim team, and much more. This year, the annual gala is moving to the fall to distinguish itself from the many end-of-year activities in the spring as well as to align the event with homecoming festivities. About 400 people are expected to attend. During the gala, attendees can bid on baskets created by each of the school’s teams as well as items donated by the community during live and silent auctions. In the past, auction items have included trips, mountain condo stays, paddle boards, kayaks, TVs, grills, ski boots, electronics, memorabilia, jewelry, furniture, bikes, concert and sporting event tickets, and parking spots in the junior and senior lots. Attendees will also have the chance to play games for prizes – including Lucky Charms, a cork pull, and Head or Tails — as well as corn hole, basketball, ping pong, and pinball for fun. A cash bar will be available for beer, wine, and mixed drinks, and heavy hors d’oeuvres, many of which are donated by local restaurants, will be served. “My favorite thing about the gala is the fact that so many in our community support it whether it is by sponsoring a table, donating food, contributing to the auction, or just showing up and having a great time, even if they no longer have students at the school,” said Steff Frese, Booster Club member. “Broomfield is a tight community and this is one way to get everyone together for a night of fun benefitting the programs that are so much of what Broomfield — both community and school — are all about.”

Gala tickets are only $40 per person. More information is available at www.broomfieldboosters.com.

SEPTEMBER 28-30 Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities presents the Broomfield Community Players in A Piece of My Heart by Shirley Lauro. This is a powerful, true drama of six women who went to Vietnam; five nurses and a country western singer booked to entertain the troops. The play portrays each young woman before, during, and after her tour in the war-torn jungle and ends as each leaves a personal token at The Wall in Washington, D.C. The women share their plans, hopes, and dreams as they begin their careers and the shock they face in Vietnam. We learn how they coped with the unspeakable reality of their work, the effects of war on the soldiers they treated and their agonizing grief for those they couldn’t help. Witness the difficulties each had returning home and the long journey to redefining themselves in a society that had no concept of the path they had traveled. This is an emotional retrospective but with a reassuring destination as each woman finds a way to bring closure to her war experience and discover her new self. Several performances are offered and tickets can be purchased in advance online at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/ event/3566832.

any of the men I see in my practice are concerned about prostate cancer. It’s understandable, since about one in seven men will experience it in his lifetime. Several add that they’ve found the recent changes in prostate screening guidelines confusing. I understand that, too, because the key difference—that screening decisions should be individualized—is often missing from the message.

I hope what I tell them can benefit you. 1. The screenings, themselves, haven’t changed. The two “frontline” screenings for prostate cancer are still the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and the digital rectal exam (DRE). Both of these can be performed during your annual exam, but neither can definitively determine the presence of prostate cancer. That requires a biopsy to gather cells directly from the prostate gland for microscopic examination. There have been instances when screenings showed “false positives,” causing worry and leading to unneeded biopsies. The guidelines were rewritten to address that issue. 2. Your screening decision comes down to solving a very personal equation. It is established that most men will have enlarged prostate as they age, but only a very small percentage of men will develop prostate cancer. Recent research has demonstrated that prostate cancer screening in otherwise healthy patients with no family history may not change outcomes in a meaningful way; even if we do detect prostate enlargement or early cancer and start treatment it does not necessarily prolong life. In addition, prostate biopsy can have significant side effects, such as loss of erection. Therefore, the new guidelines recommend personalizing prostate cancer screening according to each patient’s risk factors (symptoms and family history), acceptance of side effects from biopsy and treatment of a disease that may not have any impact in morbidity and mortality. It is essential to understand that a percentage of patients will certainly benefit from screening based on their history, exam, and lab results. It is therefore vital that you see your doctor for a one-to-one discussion of the benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening. 3. Know the symptoms. If you are experiencing the symptoms of prostate cancer— blood in the urine or semen, difficulty while urinating, dribbling, multiple urination at night or unexplained pain—see your physician right away. Otherwise, do discuss prostate screening at your next checkup. Your good health could depend on it.

Foundation, Dancers Get Ready for the 9th

SEPTEMBER 20

F

or the 9th year, Dancing with the Broomfield Stars returns to the 1st Bank Center on Thursday, Sept. 20. This exciting community event benefiting the Broomfield Community Foundation features Broomfield residents paired with professional dance instructors in a dance showcase to raise grant money for the Foundation. This year the event will be emceed by Kylie Bearse of the 9News Weather Team, with a special opening by the Legacy High School Marching Band, and a performance by the band FACE while ballots are being counted. All proceeds from the event benefit the Broomfield Community Foundation. For 25 years, the Broomfield Community Foundation's purpose has been to enhance the Broomfield community by collecting contributions and providing support through grants to non-profit groups that help the citizens of Broomfield and the surrounding area. Their mission is to inspire the community to connect people with causes that meet the needs of neighbors through caring, compassion, and charitable giving. Each year at Dancing with the Broomfield Stars, the Foundation gives out its grants for the year. This year, 55 grantees from organizations ranging from early childhood to the arts and everything in between, will receive distributions. Broomfield Community Foundation Executive Director Marianna Williamson noted that her goal for donations this year is $100,000 with at least 1,200 tickets sold. The numbers would allow for an even greater number of grantees next year.

Broomfield Stars Practicing and Rehearsing For this year’s event, nine Broomfield “Stars,” who are typically novice dancers from the Broomfield community, are paired up with dance instructors from local dance studios. Similar to the popular television show, the Broomfield Stars and dance instructors practice for several weeks and then showcase their rehearsed dance on the night of the event. This is a fun-filled evening with great food, entertainment, and a fantastic platform to give back to the community. Attendees vote on their favorite dancers by donating money and the couple who brings in the most donations is declared the winner at the end of the evening. If you are not able to attend the event, you can still vote for your favorite dancer in advance via online donations – open now.

The Heart of Community Partnership There might not be a better example of the type of community partnership that the Broomfield Community Foundation and Dancing with the Broomfield Stars represents than this year’s dance partnership between Lorrie Gypin, a 52-year-old Broomfield

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2018

special needs woman, and Steve Bauer, owner of Broomfield’s North Side Tavern. When Lorrie celebrated her birthday several months ago at North Side Tavern, she told owner Steve Bauer about her love of the dancing show by the same name and her wish to dance in the Broomfield edition. After some discussion with Lorrie’s caregivers and Marianna Williamson, Executive Director of The Broomfield Community Foundation, her wish was granted. Steve will dance with Lorrie with some choreography support. And Steve noted, they are “in it to win it,” and he has been actively promoting the event to his customers all summer.

What You Need to Know Doors at the 1st Bank Center open at 5:30 p.m., with food provided by local restaurants served from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., and the show beginning at 7:00 p.m. Food, parking, and the show are included in the ticket price. BROOMFIELD TRAILS MARATHON SET FOR NOVEMBER By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

O

n November 5, Broomfield will host its very own marathon! Runners can participate in a full or half marathon, a 10K or a 5K. The Broomfield Trails Marathon was designed as an event for the entire family and will welcome runners and walkers of all skill levels. For the longer distances, groups of runners can enter as a team in the relay category. If you are looking for a more competitive race, this event will also appeal to you with cash prizes for full and half marathon winners. The race will include professional chip timing, a sponsor and vendor expo, a fully supported course with aid stations every two miles, medals for the top finishers, ribbons for all participants, treats and festivities after the race, and professional photo downloads after the event. Not only will the race be a great family event, it supports two great causes, The Broomfield Rotary Club and A Precious Child. The Broomfield Rotary Club, founded in 1959, provides community service to local and international communities. In the past 10 years alone, Broomfield Rotary has raised and donated more than $1 million for charitable causes. A Precious Child, an organization providing opportunities and resources to children in need to empower them to achieve their full potential, is one of the many organizations the Broomfield Rotary Club has supported. A Precious Child assists children and families facing difficult life challenges such as abuse and neglect, crisis situations, and poverty. The organization was

26

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2018

founded in 2008 and has helped more than 232,000 children in Colorado. According to the race website, “The Broomfield Trails Marathon was established to bring together these two impactful organizations while further engaging both the local and broader communities and bringing a signature race series to the Broomfield area. One hundred percent of proceeds from the Broomfield Trails Marathon will go to charitable endeavors: Fifty percent to support A Precious Child’s mission and fifty percent to Broomfield Rotary to distribute to other causes through the Broomfield Rotary Charitable Foundation.” The Broomfield Community Center will host the event which offers abundant parking and a beautiful view of the mountains. The expo will include booths from both the race sponsors and vendors as well as food and beverages. Though registration is open now, race day registration will also be available starting at 6:00 a.m. The full and half marathon will start at 8:00 a.m. with the 10K and 5K races starting at 9:00 a.m. The trail will include running on both the Lake Link Trail as well as the Big Dry Creek Trail, passing the historic Brunner Farm, traversing through the suburban areas of Quail Creek and McKay Landing and finishing back at the Community Center. Finishers will be rewarded with refreshments, massages, and music at the finish line. To register and be a part of this inaugural event, or for more information on training, sponsorship, course description, and more, check out the race website at www.broomfieldmarathon.com.

PRESERVE THE HARVEST

Canning Your Summer Bounty By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

In

recent years, the old-fashioned trend of “putting up” – canning and preserving the season’s bounty – has resurfaced, along with other long-forgotten homesteading activities such as vegetable gardening, backyard chickens, knitting, and sewing. Part of the resurging interest in handicrafts comes from our increasingly technological, computerized lives, where we spend hours commuting and sitting behind desks, constantly attached to our “tech leashes.” We crave tasks requiring our hands and our creativity. The renewed interest in canning and preserving, however, often stems from a desire for greater transparency in our food supply – we want to know what we’re eating. Canning isn’t the only way to preserve food; freezing and dehydration are other common and easy methods. Freezing solidifies the water in a food in order to slow deterioration and dehydration removes all moisture to prevent spoilage. Canning works on the principle of pH (a standardized scientific scale of acidity and alkalinity) and the creation of an anaerobic environment in which

28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2018

bacteria can’t grow. While freezing and dehydration are relatively simple, canning is more labor-intensive and also requires a clear understanding of the processes involved. The particular food you’re preserving determines which of the three methods will produce the best results; fresh vegetables, like sweet corn and snap beans, for example, are best frozen rather than canned. Many people perceive canning as complicated, expensive, and difficult, but once a few basic supplies are purchased, canning is an easy and frugal way to preserve seasonal goodness. This is especially true if you have access to low-cost produce, whether from your own garden or a local farm. Water-bath canning is the most common method, but it can only be used for high-acid foods. Lower-acid foods can be pressure-canned, but good pressure canners tend to be expensive (and older versions can be dangerous). Correctly used, the traditional two-part cap (a metal ring and a flat lid with a rim of sealing compound) allows air to be released during the sealing process and also prevents bacteria from invading. Older methods, including poured paraffin seals, are no longer considered safe for modern home canning. The three most important things to remember with canning are to use the absolute freshest, highest-quality produce, follow recipes exactly and adjust processing times for altitude if necessary. Canning will not improve underripe or overripe fruits or vegetables, and an inferior starting product will result in an inferior finished product. Recipes must be followed exactly with no improvisation or variation; canning recipes published by reputable sources are extensively tested and specifically designed to achieve a pH of 4.6 or below. This is not the time to use a random recipe found online! Because water-bath canning recipes are designed to create an acidic environment where bacteria cannot

Competitive Summer Basketball Tryouts 2018 survive, altering recipes may also alter the finished product’s pH. While it is common to hear folks say “I’ve been canning this way for 30 years and have never made anyone sick,” this is definitely one situation where you’re better safe than sorry. Forgetting to adjust processing times for altitude is another common mistake new canners make. Since water boils at a lower temperature at altitude, it is necessary to increase processing times to ensure that the canned food reaches a safe internal temperature. In the metro area, most of us live somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 feet and processing times need to be increased by 10 minutes. Other elevations will need to verify appropriate processing adjustments for their particular location. If you don’t have access to your own garden but still want to do some canning, approach vendors at your local farmers’ market and ask if they’re willing to sell seconds. Farmers often have imperfect produce that might not sell due to physical defects, but the fruits or vegetables still taste great and are perfect for preserving. Canning, dehydrating, and freezing your own food doesn’t need to be complicated, expensive, or scary. The satisfaction you’ll get from defrosting pesto cubes and warming a jar of homemade tomato sauce to serve over pasta in the dead of winter is well worth the time and effort it will take you to preserve those foods. Grab some canning books from the library and you’ll be well on your way to a little bit of self-sufficiency in an increasingly dependent world.

OF BROOMFIELD to Celebrate Milestone 20th Anniversary By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

On October 20, FRIENDS of Broomfield will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a celebration and FRIENDrasier at the Chateaux at Fox Meadows. FRIENDS, which stands for Fun, Recreation, Inclusive, Experiences, Networking and Discovering the Spirit is an incredible local non-profit whose mission is “dedicated to enhancing communities by creating opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities through an innovative and person-centered approach.”

FRIENDS started when Gina Coufal, the Executive Director of Development and whose son has Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and developmental disabilities, met with other parents who wanted to network and increase opportunities for their children with disabilities. They first met with families to gather data about who in the community needed services, and to research what services were currently available. One of the many challenges was that for a small community, Broomfield was divided by several school districts and four counties. Therefore, there was no single entry point for families with special needs kids to find information or get connected. Gina talked about how FRIENDS started to grow. “To get our kids involved in recreation, we started the first Broomfield-based Special Olympics program with bowling, basketball, and track in the first year. Concurrently the city was becoming its own county. As part of this transition, we asked the city and recreation leaders to fund a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist so we could have opportunities for our kids to participate. Rachel Robbins was hired and is still responsible for the TR programs today,” said Gina FRIENDS continued to grow and became a strong advocate for families and helped others navigate the complex systems of special education, disability services, Medicaid, Social Security etc. A huge success for FRIENDS was when the State of Colorado Division for Developmental Disabilities changed the boundaries so that families in Broomfield now had one single entry point.

32

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2018

As the some of the original children started to get older, Gina wanted to focus on what services would be available to them as adults. Gina explained, “after feeling disheartened by what was available I decided FRIENDS had to take steps to develop services right here at home. After thinking long and hard, in 2002, we decided FRIENDS would become a nonprofit and began the process of becoming a direct service provider. This way we could develop and provide quality services that were person centered, and most importantly, community based.” The first program for adults was FRIENDS Night Out, a social gathering for the adults to come and have fun. The high participation revealed there was a strong need for this in the community. Gina’s family purchased a house on Main Street to become a gathering place and office. However, neighbors protested right before opening and FRIENDS ultimately had to move to a new location. In 2005, FRIENDS started the Unlimited Day Program for adults 18 and older with developmental disabilities. A few years later, FRIENDS began a residential program; supporting adults to live as independently as possible. In 2012 an angel donor came forth and offered to assist with financing a new facility. The generosity of the general contractor, architect, and dozens of trades who gave their time, skill, and product to the project made the facility happen. The program participants had a say in every step of the process, what amenities to include, how it looked, the paint color etc. The FRIENDS’ Place, ironically is a stone’s throw away from the original little house where it all began. This new facility allowed for double the participants in the Day program and eventually start a Supported Employment program. FRIENDS is currently in the process of expanding its social program by absorbing another organization called HILLS, Inc., which provides opportunity for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities

to travel. Gina said that they will offer as many as twenty trips per year, including day, local, and international trips! In the past 20 years, FRIENDS has served more than 250 adults with developmental disabilities through their various programs. Gina continued, “We are proud of our accomplishments. It really took a community! Clearly, our work is not yet done. We will continue to expand and improve our programs to meet the needs of the people we serve. We will dedicate ourselves to providing opportunities for our participants to share their stories and dreams, develop their talents and abilities, and support them to live happy, healthy, and meaningful lives.” If you would like to join the celebration of this 20th Anniversary milestone, check out the FRIENDS website at www.friendsofbroomfield.org for tickets and details.

When John was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, Sue worried about how she would take care of him. She thought about the additional care that would be necessary. Sue knew there would come a time when he would not recognize her anymore, despite their 51 years of marriage. Fortunately, John and Sue visited a counselling-oriented estate planning attorney long before his diagnosis and put plans in place in case one of them became disabled. When John could no longer pay their bills or make his own medical decisions, Sue didn’t have to worry about how to care for John. John left written instructions that he would maintain control over his finances and medical decisions unless his doctor, wife, and children all agreed he was no longer able to handle matters. John also appointed Sue to make health care decisions for him. John and Sue agreed in advance that their eldest son would assist Sue with managing the family finances, knowing that she may need assistance given the additional burden of caring for John. John executed the appropriate legal documents, so Sue could take care of him. Sue did not have to go to court to get the authority to make financial and medical decisions on John’s behalf. She did not have to deal with an impersonal court representative visiting their home and reporting to the court on John’s mental state. Sue knew John’s wishes and had the right people and documents in place to help her care for John physically, financially, and emotionally. Sue and John planned ahead. They did not wait until his Alzheimer’s Disease was too advanced to make these arrangements. Sue had what she needed in place to help her through this trying time. By planning ahead, John’s family experienced the comfort of having a well-designed estate and disability plan.

Broomfield Community Center Closes

As Construction Work Begins on New Facility By Kristen Beckman

Years of planning and preparation culminate this month as work officially begins on Broomfield’s new community center.

A

fter more than 40 years of serving the community, Broomfield’s existing community center was scheduled to close Aug. 27 and will remain closed through 2020 when the new community center is scheduled to open. The 66,900-square-foot facility scheduled for demolition this fall included both the Broomfield Recreation Center and the Broomfield Senior Center, which was added in 1990 during an extensive renovation. After a brief closure, the Senior Center is scheduled to reopen the week of Sept. 17 and will remain open during the full construction of the project.

Closure, Demolition, Construction The closure of the community and senior centers is considered Phase 1A of the project and will encompass work to prepare the site for construction. Phase 1B, scheduled to begin Sept. 16 and last through December, includes demolition of the existing recreation center. Some trail access around the site will be restricted and parking adjacent to The Bay Aquatic Park will also be closed to public access during this time for reconstruction. Phase 2, which is scheduled to begin in December and last through the Spring of 2020, includes construction of the new community center. Parking at The Bay Aquatic Park is scheduled to reopen during this phase and trail access around the site will be open to the public. During Phase 3, tentatively scheduled to last from the summer to fall of 2020, the new community center is scheduled to open, while the recreation center portion of the project remains under construction and the existing senior center is demolished.

36

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2018

2020 Reopening Planned The grand opening of the renovated site is scheduled for Fall 2020. As residents prepare to say goodbye to a familiar feature of the community, favorite memories of the existing community center are posted on the city’s website, including fond recollections of a wedding reception that took place in the center’s Lakeshore Room. The City and County of Broomfield encouraged and welcomed the community’s input in its plans for the new, multigenerational facility with space for everything from preschool programs to active aging offerings and everything in between. Final design preparations took place this spring when the Broomfield City Council agreed to move forward with the project’s design development phase.

Civic Center Update The community center is part of an exciting buzz of development and construction activity in the area. Adjacent to the new community center will be a redeveloped Civic Center, envisioned by the city to be a mixed-use activity center and social hub that will bring together friends and neighbors in a vibrant community gathering place. The development is expected to include locally owned and otherwise desirable eateries and retail outlets, professional offices, and residential spaces in a park-like setting. Broomfield’s City Council was presented with a draft plan for the 10.4-acre Civic Center project in April, which included recommendations based on input from the community and focus groups. At a community meeting in June, residents were presented with initial concepts and were invited to provide feedback on the city’s website. Included in the plans are features developed from community input, such as: Photo courtesy of The City and County of Broomfield

A Facility for the Future Final plans for the project call for a two-story, 96,088-square-foot facility that will include extensive recreational facilities, administrative offices, and space for senior services and programs. The recreation center portion of the facility will include a gymnasium, walking track, fitness studios, classrooms, three pools and a hot tub, a weight room, conference rooms, and locker rooms. The community center portion of the facility will include a child care center and preschool, woodshop, creative space, kitchen, lounge, and classrooms. The total expected price tag for the project is $47.2 million.

• A substantially enlarged community park pond wrapping around the library and auditorium toward First Avenue; • Extensive plaza and walking areas including outdoor dining, entertainment areas, and public art; • Approximately 50,000 square feet of retail and restaurant uses, a 100room inn, and 22 row houses; and • Approximately 365 dwelling units including affordable housing options. • In addition, plans call for an existing vacant Safeway building to be repurposed into 25,000 square feet of retail area, 15,000 square feet of co-working space, 10,000 square feet of community space, and 10,000 square feet of common area.

Broomfield Depot Museum Presents

“Escape the Museum” By Bette Erickson

It's fun. It's free. It's interactive. New this fall to Broomfield's Depot Museum is a special event, “Escape the Museum.”

A

lso known as an “escape game,” an escape room is a physical adventure game where participants solve a series of puzzles and riddles using clues and strategy. In this edition, you'll have one hour to solve the riddle of your fictional missing brother, George. The setting: The year is 1936 at Broomfield Depot, and the problem is solving George's disappearance. The last you heard, he was traveling as a hobo to Broomfield for work. With the help of fellow participants, you'll have a tight time frame to solve puzzles and clues in a specific order to find out what exactly happened to George. “I thought it would be a fun thing to try,” explained Tara Templeman, Museum Supervisor. “I'm excited about attracting younger people and families interested in the history of Broomfield.” “Escape the Museum” is the joint effort of Tara, museum curator Emma Noffsinger, and summer exhibit intern, Madeline Carlson. “We picked the theme and made up the puzzles,” explained Tara. There are a dozen sessions to participate in the game at the museum. Each time slot is limited to eight people and participants are asked to register through Broomfield's recreation center reservation system at www.b-rex.com. All ages are welcome to attend the escape room, but those under 13-years-old must be accompanied by an adult. There will be four sessions each on Saturday, October 6 and Saturday, October 20 at 3:00 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 6:45 p.m. In addition, there will be

two sessions on Thursday, October 11 and Thursday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. “The museum is a space where everyone is welcome,” Tara said. “The knowledge of Broomfield history belongs to everyone and I want to create as many fun opportunities to engage with that history as I can.” With the mission of collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Broomfield while focusing on railroad depot history, the Broomfield Depot Museum has been a gathering place for residents for years. Built by Colorado & Southern Railway (C&S) bridge and building crews in 1909, the Broomfield Depot jointly served the C&S and one of its subsidiaries, the Denver & Interurban Railroad. During that time only 160 people called Broomfield home. Concerned about the lack of housing for a depot station agent and hoping to attract a married man (because they were considered steady and reliable), the railroad built the live-in depot. Today, free guided tours explain the risks and benefits for the railroad employees and their families who lived on-site more than a century ago. For information about “Escape the Museum” or other upcoming events at the museum, contact Tara Templeman at ttempleman@ broomfield.org or call 303-460-6824. The museum is located at 2201 West 10th Ave., and is open Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For just $20 per year ($10 for students and seniors), you can become a Depot Museum Friend and support its historic mission. Selects Lucky Boy for 2018 Read

By Elizabeth Buckingham

aybe you’ve always wanted to join a book club, but can’t make time for the regular commitment, or you don’t know enough like-minded souls. Or maybe you just want to read a compelling novel, then meet the author and have the opportunity to discuss it with members of your community? Great news: Broomfield’s popular One Book One Broomfield program is back, and it’s better than ever. According to Chris Pusateri, Adult Services Coordinator at the Broomfield Library, “One Book One Broomfield is a city-wide reading and discussion program that encourages citizens to read the same book at the same time to create a shared sense of community through literature. This year’s selection is Lucky Boy by Shanthi Sekaran; it’s a gripping tale of two mothers and two very different pictures of immigration. Lucky Boy addresses a number of currently relevant issues, among them migration, childlessness, citizenship, and privilege.” In a recent NPR interview, author Sekaran explains how her own upbringing informed her experience of writing Lucky Boy. “Growing up, my mother was a pediatrician and the majority of her patients were immigrants,” she said. “And I knew from sort of hanging around her office and doing her filing and stuff that there were immigrants whose lives were different from mine. You know, I’d see kids come in who I didn’t see at school, who I didn’t see in my soccer games. So I knew always that there were different immigrant stories out there, and what I wanted to do with this novel was to recognize that disparity and look at the stories

40

THE BROOMFIELDER™ SEPTEMBER 2018

behind it and look at the ramifications of the differences.” In keeping with the book selection, the overall theme of this year’s One Book One Broomfield program revolves around migration and movement. The Broomfield Library and Cultural Affairs department will be facilitating activities and discussions around these themes, both on Broomfield Voice and in social media, all leading up to the author talk on November 3. The goal is to engage the community in conversation and get to know how readers and their own families wound up in Broomfield. One Book One Broomfield programming will kick off in October; some of the activities you can look forward to include interactive surveys and discussion forums to get to know your community and fellow readers. Interviews with local residents (maybe you?) will highlight unique stories of migration. There will also be reader check-ins to ask what your thoughts are on the story so far (don’t worry - no spoilers!). The One Book One Broomfield program will conclude with a special evening with Lucky Boy author Shanthi Sekaran. This community event will offer opportunities for questions and conversations, fun themed activities, plus a book signing with the author. Participation in One Book One Broomfield is free, and there are lots of ways to get involved. The author event is also free, and will take place at the Broomfield Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3. More information about One Book One Broomfield can be found at ww.broomfieldvoice.com/onebook.

BE PREPARED

in Case of an Emergency If your neighborhood is impacted by a major emergency, would you be informed? If you had a fire at your home, would your children know what to do? If you are injured and can’t open the door, would first responders know how to get in your home quickly without breaking the door? These are questions any Broomfield resident should be able to answer “yes” to. Follow this checklist provided by North Metro Fire Rescue District to be prepared for an emergency and to help keep your family and your community safe. 1. Register for Smart911 and CodeRED – Smart911 allows you to create a safety profile online, which will securely provide critical information to 9-1-1 operators and first responders during an emergency— information such as how to get inside your home, if there are pets at home, and what medical conditions you have. CodeRED informs you of impending dangers in your area. Using CodeRED, Broomfield is able to send out emergency alerts with safety instructions to residents in an impacted area via phone, text and email. Residents can register with Smart911 and CodeRED for free by visiting www.smart911.com and www.your911.net respectively.

2. Attend a CPR and Stop the Bleed Class – North Metro Fire hosts free CPR and Stop the Bleed classes each quarter. Through the classes, you’ll learn how to give CPR, use an AED, pack a wound and apply a tourniquet in case of a trauma injury causing blood loss. These critical skills can mean the difference in life and death for someone and are skills everyone at every age should know. To check out the upcoming schedule, visit www.nmfr.org/cpr. 3. Sign up for Our Ambulance Membership Program – While you can’t prevent all emergencies, you can help lessen the financial burden of an ambulance transport by signing up for North Metro Fire’s Ambulance Membership Program. For a $35-$45 annual membership fee, you can rest assured that you won’t have to pay any balance to the fire district for being transported to the hospital during a medical emergency. Develop your evacuation plan for a fire and practice it with your kids. Ensure they know two ways out of their room, where your family’s meeting place is, how to call 9-1-1 for an emergency, and that they know their address and phone number. Emergencies can happen at any time. We hope you take the time to check off this list to help your family be prepared and stay safe.

DOING SOME LANDSCAPI NG IN THE YARD THIS SUMMER? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to www.broomfield.org/wastewater

Know the Symptoms. OF MEN 99% survive Prostate Cancer

when caught early.

Changes in prostate screening guidelines have left many men unclear about if and when to schedule a screening. Here’s the most current recommendation: develop a personalized plan with your doctor. It’s especially important for men 55 to 69 as the risk of prostate cancer increases with age. Whatever your age, see a physician if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: • Blood in your urine

• Painful urination

• Erectile dysfunction

• Testicular pain or lump

• Frequent urination

• Urinary incontinence
