Documentation is important in many aspects of our lives today. We rely on Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney to provide direction upon our disability or death. But we should not rely on standard documentation alone. The type of documents we have will not ensure an effective transition upon our disability or death. Even the best document from a legal technical perspective will fail if we don’t do these key things: 1. The documents must be designed through personalized counseling. Your family is different than every other family. You have goals, dreams, aspirations, and relationships that cannot be properly addressed through standardized forms. 2. You must properly title your assets so they can be captured by your estate plan. If your assets bypass the instructions you prepared, your documents are worthless and you end up in probate or worse. 3. You must update your documentation on a regular basis. Changes in the tax and legal environment, and in your personal situation, can have a drastic effect on your plan. 4. Your family should control the process on your disability or death. Not only should you be organized so that they are not scrambling to put your affairs in order, but they should know what to do, how to do it, and how they should pay for any assistance they will need. Preparing your family for the inevitable ensures things will go more smoothly. If you would like to learn more, attend one of our complimentary workshops.

HEALTH+WELLNESS Wake Up Refreshed

Simple Ways to Begin Your Morning By Family Features

Ready, set, go. Just as you would set off at the starting line of a race, this hectic pace is how mornings begin for many men and women. It has been proven time and time again that starting your morning right will lower your levels of stress and anxiety, and even reduce or prevent depression. Instead of waking with dread to face another hectic morning, consider these tips for a healthier way to ease into your daily rituals. Although these activities may require you to allot extra time to your mornings, you will be pleased with the productive results.

Meditate. A practice that has been around for thousands of years may still be one of the best stress busters for hurried mornings. To start, find a place in your home that is free of noise and distraction. Practice sitting still, with eyes closed, and focus only on your breathing. Using deep, controlled breaths, try to steer your thoughts away from negative and stress-inducing thoughts. If you don’t know where to start, try guided meditations on YouTube or a meditation app. Stretch. While the most health-conscious person may opt for a morning sweat-a-thon, working in some stretches also has extensive benefits. When you wake, take at least 15 to 30 minutes to stretch and hold each pose for 15-30 seconds. Like meditation, turn to YouTube or join a yoga class to learn the basics if you don’t know where to start. It is important to ensure you are stretching correctly to avoid injuries.

Activate. Give your brain some fuel in the morning while also doing something nice for your mind. For example, journaling is a gentle way to ease into your morning and get your brain firing. Write down a few affirmations for the day, revisit a pleasant memory from your past or scribble down a goal for the week. Journaling can be an uplifting way to engage the mind and express gratitude for the day ahead. Find more tips for starting your day on the right foot at www.eLivingToday.com.

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT Christina McCain

A Passion for Helping Children By Megan Eichner

Bonnie Steele, featured in the November issue for her work in Broomfield Health and Human Services, nominated Christina McCain, a School Resource Officer at Broomfield High School, for this month’s Community Highlight because she thought such a hard working person deserved recognition for their contribution to our community. Christina has been working in the Broomfield Police Department for 20 years, and knew from a young age that she wanted to be a police officer. She attended Metropolitan State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Sociology, and then graduated from the police academy. Christina has always had a passion for helping children, spending a majority of her career working with juvenile populations, including two periods of time as a School Resource Officer. Her responsibilities extend beyond the high school to Broomfield Heights Middle

School, Kohl Elementary School, and Emerald Elementary School. Her roles extend beyond Law Enforcement to counselor, liaison, and educator, of which she might use all of them during a single incident. On a daily basis, there is no difference between Christina’s work and any other Patrol Officer, meaning being ready and able to respond to any event at any time. However, she has the additional priority of ensuring the safety of the schools, students, and staff. Christina feels grateful for the Broomfield community, which she says “respects and likes” their police force. This dynamic allows her to have a greater positive impact, especially with kids and teens. She said, “I get to see these kids on their good days and their bad days, I get to see them come in as scared, timid, sometimes immature Freshman and leave as young men and women.” She has even had students come back as adults to thank her and tell her about how she made a difference in their lives.

Christina would like the Broomfield community to know, “I am grateful and blessed to be a part of your child’s journey. I am very passionate about fulfilling the responsibilities and profession that I chose as my career and am lucky that I love what I do.” Do you know someone who is making a difference in the community that deserves some recognition? Email your nominations for Community Highlights to editor@loudmouthmedia.com.

HOME 3 Things That May Go Wrong

If You Don’t Winterize Your House By BPT

Neglecting to winterize your home and letting small issues pile up can have big repercussions. Ahead of the winter season, HomeServe, a leading provider of service plans, repair and installation services for the home, wants to make sure you’re aware of three major things that may go wrong if you don’t winterize your house or neglect your heating system.

1. Your utility bills may skyrocket. Utility bills often jump up in the winter due to the increased hours of darkness and the cost to heat your home. But if your heater is on the fritz or your filters are clogged, you could be in for an even bigger surprise. Dirty filters cause your furnace to work harder, which leads to inefficiency and a shortened lifespan for your heating system. A yearly tune-up is an inexpensive way to help prevent a costly system breakdown in the coming months.

2. The threat of carbon monoxide is very real. Do you know how old your furnace is? Do you know how long it’s been since a professional checked it over? Carbon monoxide poses a health threat when the heating system flue, vent or chimney becomes blocked from debris or other material. During a heating system tune-up, a professional service technician can check to make sure all your vents are not blocked and are

working properly. Installing a carbon monoxide detector in your home is another smart way to help with early detection.

3. Water pipes can burst. It’s not just your heating system that needs to be winterized. Before the cold sets in, make sure outside hoses are put away and water is turned off. Evaluate which pipes are at the greatest risk for freezing during cold weather. Inside pipes should be covered in insulation to keep pipes warmer longer. Pipe insulation is easy to apply and available at most hardware stores and home centers. For more information on National Tune-Up Day, including a heating system check-list, visit www.nationaltuneupday.com.

Presents with Purpose:

Gift Ideas

That Make an Impact By BPT

This holiday season, consider giving loved ones a present that makes a meaningful impact on the world. Nothing evokes the holiday spirit more than giving gifts that help others in a direct, effective way.

16

THE BROOMFIELDER™ DECEMBER 2019

Here are a few ways you can give a gift this year that truly makes someone’s life better: Donating these types of gifts on behalf of a loved one who has struggled with his or her own health concerns can be an especially meaningful way to show you care at the holidays.

Support Community Artisans

Feed A Family - and Nourish A Community Several global charities have developed unique opportunities for Americans to make a dramatic impact on the lives of families throughout developing countries through gift giving. For example, donors can direct contributions that pay for farm animals to support a family or a clean water well installation to benefit an entire community. In World Vision’s Annual Holiday Gift Catalog, a gift of a goat and two chickens provides a steady supply of eggs, milk and protein that can feed two or more struggling families. Your loved one will receive a card to tell them you’re making this lifechanging donation on their behalf. A single dairy goat can provide up to 16 cups of milk per day, providing calcium, protein and other essential nutrients for growing children. Chickens are easy to raise, and they naturally multiply to help feed generations of children. Each family who receives chickens gives back some hatched chicks to help other families in their community. This productivity can create a viable small-business opportunity for a single mother or struggling family to help add to their income.

If your loved one is passionate about artistic and beautiful things from around the world, you can support local artisans and craftspeople as well. Your support enables artisans to access “microloans” that help them fund their businesses. You can also directly purchase their hand-crafted items, which supports their business and enables you or your gift recipient to enjoy unique and beautiful works of art. Look for organizations that partner with fair trade organizations when you shop for international goods to maximize the impact of your gift. Browse through World Vision’s 2019 Gift Catalog to see a wide variety of unique handcrafted gifts ranging from jewelry and housewares to decorative items. A portion of your purchase will be used to support specific, urgent needs for children, families or communities around the world, benefiting local artisans, along with the individual for whom you selected a gift. A $75 or greater donation enables you to select a gift from the Opportunity Collection of home decor items, the Grace Collection of jewelry and accessories or the Hope Bracelet. These items were exclusively designed by Emmy-Award-winning actress Patricia Heaton. They were created by fair trade artisans in India in partnership with Gifts with a Cause, a fair-trade organization that provides a sustainable income to artists in developing countries. Your gift will truly have an impact on making the lives of others better - long after the holidays are over. Visit donate.worldvision. org/giftcatalog to purchase your life-changing gift today.

Provide Vital Medical Supplies World Vision also helps struggling families in developing countries gain access to life-saving medicine, vitamins and nutritional support. A monthly or yearly donation to World Vision in the name of your loved one is a great way to provide access to vital pharmaceuticals and medical supplies such as antibiotics, antifungals, anti-parasitic drugs, deworming medications, disposable syringes, gastrointestinal drugs, painkillers or surgical supplies to communities that desperately need them. ARTS+CULTURE Rocky Mountain Brassworks

Christmas Festival Brass bands date back to the early 19th century and the Industrial Revolution. Employers began to finance work bands to decrease the political activity with which the working class seemed preoccupied during their leisure time, and the idea blossomed. Brass bands have become one of the world’s most widespread forms of amateur musical performance. Today there are several hundred brass bands in North America and it is exciting to see the genre make a valuable and unique contribution to the rich musical heritage of America. John Kincaid, Professor of Music at Western State College in Gunnison, CO, has long been an expert on brass bands in the world. While on sabbatical leave from his duties at WSC, he traveled to New Zealand and researched the brass bands of the South Pacific. He shared his enthusiasm and expertise with many brass players and founded what is now known as the Colorado Brass Band. After several years, several Denver area residents got together and decided to start a “local” brass band, which would rehearse on a regular basis. The first band was started in conjunction with the Denver Parks and Recreation Department and used borrowed tenor horns that were old and in terrible disrepair. After several months of struggling, the band decided to withdraw from the sponsorship of DP&RD and “go independent.” In 1978 players were recruited from the Front Range

and the band’s name became “Rocky Mountain Brassworks,” with Paul Curnow as the director. Since 1991 the band has performed four times at the Colorado Music Educators convention in Colorado Springs, for the Lord Mayor of London and Princess Ann at a British Faire held in Denver, and World Youth Day opening Mass with Pope John Paul. RMB was also invited to play for the American School Band Directors Association National Convention in Boulder, the opening of Interstate 76 in Adams County, and many other notable events. Rocky Mountain Brassworks’ Christmas Festival will be held from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. To learn more about the band and purchase tickets, visit www.rockymountainbrassworks.org/ events/2019/12/21/holiday-concert-at-broomfield-auditorium.

FURRY FRIENDS 5 Simple Ways Anyone Can

Support Animal Shelters By NewsUSA

It’s staggering to think that each year an estimated 5-7 million companion animals find their way into the care of animal shelters across the United States. Despite the best efforts of thousands of shelter workers, keeping up with the care of abandoned animals is a daunting task for even the most well-funded rescue organizations. While you may not be able to donate tons of money or time, supporting animal shelters with small contributions can make a huge difference.

2. Get Social

Here are some simple ways you can help.

Since overcrowding in animal shelters is a constant challenge, many rescue organizations look for foster homes that may help socialize and prepare certain pets for adoption. Contact your local shelter and see if you qualify.

1. Lend Your Expertise Shelters often have limited funds to hire individuals capable of setting up websites, writing articles for newsletters, taking pictures of available pets, landscaping the grounds or providing legal advice. Consider your skill set and how you could be a valuable resource for your local shelter.

Shelter animals come from diverse backgrounds, and socializing them can be key in making them more attractive candidates for adoption. Animal rescue organizations often need volunteers willing to dedicate a little time to playing with a cat or teaching a dog to sit.

3. Foster a Pet

4. Turn Your Trash into Treasure Animal shelters go through lots of food bowls and towels each year. While your old blankets and dinnerware might seem ready for a trip to

the dump, they could be put to good use. Think before you toss them, because your trash could be treasure to a pet in need.

5. Click Away Want to help shelters acquire the essentials without dipping into your wallet? Major pet brands are harnessing the power of the Internet to help pet lovers support animal shelters without spending a dime. A recent GiveLitter campaign saw more than 60,000 voters visiting www.givelitter.com to donate 100,000 pounds of World’s Best Cat Litter to shelters across the country.
