FROM THE

Foundation Efforts Help Change Lives

F

or more than 25 years, the Broomfield Community Foundation’s (BCF’s) purpose has been to enhance the Broomfield community by collecting contributions and providing support through grants to non-profit groups that help the citizens of Broomfield and the surrounding area. Their mission is to inspire the community and to connect people with causes that meet the needs of neighbors through caring, compassion, and charitable giving. Many of the recipient organizations, such as high-impact community supporters like FISH, Imagine!, and a Precious Child, are in the business of improving and indeed changing the lives of their clients every day. So I guess you could say BCF is a conduit for changing lives across our community. One of BCF’s annual fundraising events, Dancing with the Broomfield Stars, returns to the 1st Bank Center on Thursday, September 26, for the 10th year – and audience members are in for a few special surprises including a new format and structure for non-profit and dancer engagement. This year, participating non-profits are partners in the event, selecting their representative dancer or dance troupe, and helping with event organization and support. The organizations will all share in event proceeds as well. Planned participants include Colorado Conservatory of Dance (CCD), Mental Health Partners of Broomfield, A Precious Child, The Broomfield Veteran’s Memorial Museum, Broomfield FISH, Avista/St. Anthony’s North Hospital Foundations, Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities, Bal Swan Children’s Center, and Imagine! Speaking of changing lives, in an unexpected way, BCF and Dancing with the Broomfield Stars changed my life when I was asked to be one of the dancers three years ago. The experience was one of the most impactful of my life and led to an eventual foray into competitive ballroom dancing. I have been dancing 3-4 days a week ever since and have now danced in several shows and half a dozen competitions. The benefits to my overall health and life outlook are indescribable. And I have met the most amazing people! This year I am honored to return to the Dancing with the Broomfield Stars stage as part of the intermission entertainment. The show will include two former “Stars” turned ballroom dancers. My friend Linda Johnson (Dancing with the Broomfield Stars 2014) will perform with her Professional Coach Timmy Merz of Booth Dancesport, and I (Dancing with the Broomfield Stars 2016) will dance with my Professional Coach Lucio Escuadra, also of Booth. A special segment featuring students from Broomfield’s Dance Arts Studio is also planned, among other surprises. This is an amazing event supporting an organization that helps thousands in the community. Mark your calendar and come out to see the Greatest Show in Broomfield this fall (by the way … that is a hint about my performance!). I look forward to seeing you there! For tickets, to donate or for more information visit www.broomfieldfoundation.org.

HAPPENINGS

COMMUNITY AUGUST 06

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories, and military bases worldwide, on the first Tuesday in August. Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts, and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits, and more. Broomfield’s National Night Out—Picnic in the Park is sponsored by the Broomfield Police Department Neighborhood Watch program with the slogan “Neighborhood Watch … It’s Not Just Crime Prevention Anymore! It’s about Creating a Community Network to Provide a Safer Place to Live!” The all-hazard awareness safety event will be held at the Broomfield County Commons Park from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Residents are invited to bring a picnic supper and make an evening of it! There are will be interactive learning stations, all-hazard preparedness education centers, a demonstration by North Metro Fire Rescue showing extrication from a crashed car, a police K-9 demonstration, and an interactive SWAT display. In addition to the traditional police and fire vehicles, touch-a-truck includes big city trucks that take care of Broomfield’s streets and kids can climb inside to see what they are all about! Snacks, drawings, and prizes are part of the festivities. In the spirit of community support and helping neighbors, residents are encouraged to help stock Broomfield’s local food pantry by donating non-perishable food items to FISH during the event. National Night Out is supported by the National Association of Town Watch – a premiere non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing communities through an established network of law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations, and volunteers across the nation. FROM ST. ANTHONY NORTH HEALTH CAMPUS

INNOVATION = Fewer Needle Sticks at Avista & St. Anthony North!

New Blood Draw Technology Improves Patient Comfort at your Community Hospital By Kirsten Gurmendi

N

eedle based blood draws create fear and anxiety in nearly every patient. At least 32 million Americans have a diagnosable phobia of needles known as trypanophobia; however, thanks to medical innovation, Centura Health and your community hospitals are the first and only health system in Colorado to offer PIVO, a revolutionary needle-free blooddraw solution. “This new technology is changing the face of how patients experience hospital care,” said Dawn Bloemen, Centura’s Emerging Technology Analyst. Blood draws are such a common component of a hospital stay; the associated trauma to patients has largely been overlooked – and while the results inform 70% of all clinical decisions, there has been little innovation in this procedure or related technologies in decades. “PIVO means we can get the blood we need from an already placed IV line, painlessly avoiding some 800,000 unnecessary needle sticks a year! It’s a game changer, and Centura is very proud to be leading the way toward a more comfortable hospital stay for our patients,” Bloemen added. “PIVO was a welcome relief for me,” said new mom Jill Hyland of Erie, among the first patients to experience the new technology at Centura’s Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville. “Because my pregnancy came with some complications, I had many blood draws during those nine months, resulting in bruises covering my arms,” she added. Thanks to PIVO, the additional level of anxiety was eliminated once Hyland learned she could skip being stuck. “This new technology is great and opens the door for better hospital memories,” the new mom said. For pioneering better blood draws, the national business magazine Fast Company recently named Velano Vascular as one of its 2019 Top Ten Most Innovative Companies in Biotech. The PIVO device is currently in use at most Centura Health Denver metro area hospitals, as well as Longmont United and Avista Adventist Hospital. With the device’s implementation at St. Anthony North Health Campus this October, the patient experience improvement will be available at all 17 Centura Hospitals. “We are committed to innovation on behalf of the half million patients and the tens of thousands of providers that tend to their health and wellbeing within our hospitals every year,” said Dr. Shauna Gulley, SVP and Chief Clinical Officer of Centura Health. “We are proud to be the first health system in the region and one of the first in the country to challenge the need for needles in blood collection, breaking a status quo that creates unnecessary pain, anxiety, and risk.”

Get ready to laugh with Comedian Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. With a background that ranges from being a bouncer with The Rolling Stones and The Who, a 25-year career in veterinary medicine that saw him named “Specialist of the Year in Private Practice” in 2006, and more than 20-years of performing as a professional stand-up comedian, Kevin Fitzgerald is a true renaissance man. Fitzgerald has performed stand-up comedy and been a staple of the Denver comedy scene since 1986. He has opened for and worked with such diverse and legendary performers as Joan Rivers, Bob Hope, Kevin Nealon, Brian Regan, and Norm McDonald. Gary Sumner served in the U.S. Navy from 1970-1977 as an attack pilot and flight instructor. Among his deployments, his First Cruise in 1975 was off Viet Nam flying sorties for cover of the evacuation of Saigon. Later that month he flew sorties to recover the stolen merchant ship Mayaguez off Cambodia. Later in 1977, during a 9-month cruise, he flew 150 sorties during the Cold War involving up-close encounters with several Soviet “Bear” long range bombers. Gary will incorporate his experiences in the Navy in his talk called “Freedom of the Seas,” a narrative of the importance of the control of the high seas.

PRP, or platelet rich plasma, is a portion of a patient’s very own blood that initiates and stimulates the healing process in your joints, without surgery! After platelets are injected, they change shape and develop branches that spread over the injured area forming a healing enriched base. Growth factors in the PRP are released from this healing layer which stimulates inflammation and draws healing cells to the area.

M

ore than 800 area friends and neighbors gathered for Taste It Broomfield, on June 27 at the 1ST BANK Center to enjoy Broomfield’s annual celebration of local food and drink presented by The Broomfield Chamber of Commerce and The Broomfielder magazine. The event promotes the Broomfield area food, wine, and beer culture in a tasty and entertaining community event. This year’s event was great fun for attendees with the tasting extravaganza designed around a festive street vendor ambiance created within the 1ST BANK Center, featuring live music, food and beverage offerings from local establishments, and an opportunity to learn about Broomfield’s many great non-profits and community organizations on display at the event. “The Broomfield Chamber’s 2019 Taste It Broomfield event once again lived up to its reputation of being the BEST tasting festival in the north metro area,” said Tammy Whitaker of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce. “With more than 800 attendees and 67 vendors, there was something for everyone to enjoy! We are proud to say that we broke numerous records this year and received rave reviews from our vendors and attendees alike. We can’t wait to see what 2020 Taste It Broomfield brings and promise to deliver another evening to remember.” “Our vendors share our passion for making Taste It Broomfield a success and we could not do it without them!” she added. “Special thanks also to our generous sponsors, including the 1stBank Center, The Broomfielder magazine and Loudmouth Media, the City and County of Broomfield, Elevations Credit Union, Oracle, Colorado Krav Maga, and Minuteman Press.” Mike Garrison, publisher of The Broomfielder magazine said, “It was our honor to once again partner with the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce on this engaging community event. The evening was great fun and a fabulous way to showcase Broomfield’s eateries and breweries. If you missed the event, we encourage you to try some of the participants next time you plan an evening out in the Broomfield area.”

Broomfield’s New

Community Center on Schedule By Bette Erickson

The community spoke and Broomfield listened. Since September 2018, a full reconstruction of the Broomfield Community Center has been underway. The completion schedule for the new recreation center includes opening in phases with the south half of the facility, including administration offices, meeting rooms, and Senior Services, opening in June 2020. Demolition of the existing Senior Center and remaining site work is slated to be complete by fall 2020. At approximately 96,088-square feet – some 10,000-square feet larger than the Paul Derda Recreation Center across town off Lowell Blvd. – Broomfield City Council approved the $47.2-million project at an August 2018 meeting.

History is sweet. Longtime community members may recall that the old Broomfield Community Center opened in 1974, followed by the on-site addition of the Senior Center in 1990. The former facility was 37,348-square feet. While a rose by any other name (would still smell as sweet), most participants refer to the facility as the BCC, rather than calling it the Senior Center or recreation center. Broomfield listens to its residents. Knowing that people are the most valuable asset of a community, the City and County sought stakeholder comments to guide planning for the new community-recreation-senior center. More than half a dozen community forums soliciting resident input gleaned thousands of important and useful suggestions. Construction of the new center involved demolition of the northern portion of the existing facility to begin building the new two-story community center, while the senior services section of the facility remained operational. Some programs have been moved to the Paul Derda Recreation Center (PDRC) during construction. Stakeholders, architects, and City and County staff found that while touring other recreation centers in the Denver metro-area, there are not that many dual community-senior services facilities around. However, the dual-purpose model has shown itself to work well for the Broomfield community. For that reason, like the PDRC and the BCC, the new facility is planned to be a truly multi-generational facility ranging from preschool programs through programs with an active aging focus – and everything conceivable in between.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ AUGUST 2019

Here is a proposed estimate of square footage for some of the programs that the new center will provide: • 18,000 square feet for Natatorium with a hot tub, cool temperature (80-81°) lap pool, a warm pool (85°), and a smaller therapy pool (about 88°), popular for arthritis water aerobics • 15,000 square feet for basketball, pickle ball, and volleyball courts • 5,000 square feet for fitness studio areas • 3,700 square feet of locker rooms/cabanas • 8,000 square feet for community events space, incorporating enhancement of the Lakeshore Room (with its Brunner Reservoir view) and kitchen – used for preparing Broomfield’s Meals on Wheels and senior lunch program • 1,040 square foot woodshop • 3,300 square feet of classroom space for KinderMusic, senior programs, preschool, and meeting space • 927 square foot (senior) Fireside Lounge • 5,000 square feet of administration and office areas For more information, to ask questions or to share suggestions, contact Mayor Pro Tem Bette Erickson at berickson@broomfieldcitycouncil.org.

Goal-Setting & Communication A R E

K E Y

T O

Student Success By Kristen Beckman

Summer is winding down, and kids will soon trade in their swimsuits and sunscreen for backpacks and books. The new school year offers a fresh start, when students and parents alike begin to think about how they can establish good habits and get off on the right foot for what they hope will be a successful school year. 20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ AUGUST 2019

The first step to achieving success in school is to define what success is. For many students, achieving straight "A"s represents the ultimate success, but for other students, success might be measured in less concrete ways, whether it is improving their grades from the previous year, finding something they are passionate about learning, or challenging themselves to overcome something that is difficult for them. There has been a movement recently to personalize education to align with students’ passions and abilities, said Ari Gerzon-Kessler, Director of Family Partnerships for Boulder Valley School District. For schools, this shift may mean redefining lesson plans to make traditional school subjects relevant to the everyday lives of students, as well as going beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic to teach qualities that are key to success in life, including persistence, self-regulation, and discipline, he said.

Setting Goals No matter how you define success in school, setting goals is one of the most effective ways to achieve success. Setting a goal to achieve a certain number of "A"s or a specific grade point average is straightforward and measurable. But other goals can be tailored to help students achieve success in other ways. Gerzon-Kessler encourages students to write down a specific personal goal and an academic goal every three months. These could include goals like helping out more at home by doing an extra chore each week, reading an extra 10 minutes per night, or improving from a 70 percent to an 80 percent on weekly spelling tests. A shy student might set a goal to raise his hand twice in class or eat lunch with different friends each week. The forgetful student might set a goal to write every day in her planner and then check it each night. “What I love about that is the student is defining success for him or herself,” said Gerzon-Kessler. “Teachers and the school system itself traditionally define what success is in a very uniform way, but when it is more personalized, students are more likely to take ownership of it.” Parents can help their child reach their goals by checking in with them each month about their progress, celebrating their success with the same enthusiasm they would celebrate an A, and encouraging them to continue pushing themselves with new goals that build upon their successes.

Communication Two-way communication is a fundamental pillar of BVSD’s strategic plan, and proactive communication among students, parents, and teachers is critical to student success in school. Teachers should reach out to parents early in the school year to provide information about how they plan to communicate with parents and how they can be reached with questions and concerns, and parents should feel comfortable reaching out to teachers to discuss their child’s academic progress and social and behavioral concerns at school in a way that is respectful of the teacher’s time and workload. An open line of communication between parents and teachers can accelerate progress by identifying and addressing challenges as soon as possible. “Parents are the experts on their child,” said Gerzon-Kessler. “Often teachers don’t know about a student’s strengths, challenges, and interests until later in the year. If you can provide some things early on for a teacher to know about your child, it can help them more effectively meet their needs and goals. For example, a teacher might be able to pair a shy child with another child who is shy as a regular partner to help them both build confidence.” Parents should also focus on fostering proactive communications with their child. Carving out regular time in our busy lives to connect with our children reaps a lot of value, said Gerzon-Kessler. Family dinner time or a weekend walk is a great opportunity to move beyond basic closed-ended questions like “How was your day at school?” to asking thought-provoking, open-ended questions, such as “What challenged or interested you today?” Visit us online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com

School Supply DRIVES

Help Local Kids Start the School Year Right By Megan Eichner

E

ach summer, A Precious Child organizes a collection of school supplies for our community’s children in need. The Fill A Backpack program aims to help 19,000 local kids start the school year with the materials they need to be successful. Back to school season can be stressful and challenging for families who do not have the funds to afford the ever growing list of supplies requested by schools and teachers. On average, parents spend more than $100 on school supplies per child each year. According to A Precious Child, “there are 250,000 children living below self-sufficiency in the eight-county Denver metro area” and the organization wishes to help as many of them as possible. A Precious Child’s program provides students with new backpacks filled with the materials they need to satisfy their grade level requirements. By donating supplies (as well as monetary donations), the community can help students in need can feel prepared and equal to their peers starting from the first day of school. Joanna Wise, marketing manager for A Precious Child, shared some memorable experiences from working with the program, as well as some insight into how Fill A Backpack came to exist. Carina Martin, A Precious Child’s Founder and CEO, had firsthand experience with the effects of poverty when it came education. Her mother, a retired teacher, would have students show up to her class “without the supplies they needed because they were too expensive for their parents to afford.” This inspired Martin to create the program so that all students can go

Joanna recalled a time when she met a local mother in need of assistance saying, “She didn’t have access to community resources and she was even struggling to feed her son who was in middle school. When we told her about our Fill A Backpack Program she began sobbing because she was so grateful.” Donations of supplies and money can make a significant impact in the life of a family in need from our Broomfield community. Drives to collect supplies and money are hosted by individuals, organizations, and businesses throughout the Denver metro area. There are also Community, Chamber, and Corporate challenges for groups to compete in their supply drives to collect the most donations. Last year, A Precious Child was able to provide 17,000 backpacks to kids in our community. From one $50 donation, the program is able to provide a child with a new backpack and all of the supplies they need for the school year. Local donation centers include the Broomfield Library and Broomfield City Hall. The Fill A Backpack program collects donations during the months of June, July, and August. For more information, such as supply lists for each grade level and the full list of donation centers, please visit apreciouschild.org. Crayons to Calculators is another program in our community that is supporting local students as they head back to school. This collaborative partnership between the Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley and Impact on Education for the Boulder Valley School District serves 11,000 kids in need every year by providing school supplies. As stated on their website, the program was created with the overall mission of reducing the cost of attending school to “move one step closer to eliminating the achievement gap that persists between low-income students and their higher-income peers.”

Our community sees the impact of this drive in our Boulder Valley Schools of Broomfield. The collected backpacks filled with school supplies, as well as donations of money, help children from preschool through high school start the school year with everything they need to be successful. The supply drive runs through June and July, but if you would like to donate money to their cause it can be done at any time through their website at www.crayonstocalculators.org.

All ages are welcome!” SRB helps seniors through nutrition programs, including Meals on Wheels, and community resource programs, such as loans of medical equipment, caregiver respite, and funding for hearing aids and dental work. The Dancing in the Park Concert is just one of the events that SRB sponsors at Broomfield Days. If golfing is more your speed than dancing, grab your friends and join the Broomfield Days Golf Tournament at the Eagle Trace Golf Course in Broomfield, also on September 20 at 7:30 a.m., which includes lunch and prizes. Achieving Results with Current Trends in

PERSONAL FITNESS By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind. However, many people experience the lack of time, motivation or knowledge to do it consistently and correctly. Working with a fitness professional in either a one-on-one or in a group setting can help with these barriers. With all the options of different types of training available including personal training, group training or working with someone online, you are sure to find something that fits your schedule, budget, and fitness needs.

26

THE BROOMFIELDER™ AUGUST 2019

PERSONAL TRAINING The most common type of individual training is personal training. This includes working one-on-one with a trainer who personalizes the workout to fit your goals, needs, and schedule. When looking for a trainer, look for someone who is nationally certified through a reputable organization such as American Council on Exercise, National Strength and Conditioning Association, American College of Sports Medicine or the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Many trainers will offer an initial consultation for you to get to know each other and see if you connect well. One-on-one training is great if you are just starting to exercise and need specialized guidance, are coming back from an injury or long layoff or like the idea of someone creating workouts that will challenge you. If you are short on time, many trainers can customize the length of the time of the sessions. Most trainers work out of a gym or studio but some are even able to come to your house for added convenience.

SEMI-PRIVATE TRAINING If you prefer to work in groups but still like a customized workout, semi-private training may be for you. In semi-private training, trainers lead anywhere from two to generally up to four people through a workout. This type of training is ideal for those who like the motivation, accountability, and energy of working with others but do not want to take a class with a large group of people. And semi-private training is less expensive than one-on-one training since the cost of the session is spread out among the participants. Rachael Junkroski, a NASM certified personal trainer and Assistant Program Manager with Elevation Corporate Health at Century Link in Broomfield is a fan of semi-personal training. She states, “Semi-private training has so many benefits! Having the extra accountability and motivation from fellow members can drastically increase your personal health/fitness goals as well as bring more enjoyment to exercising.

BOUTIQUE TRAINING Another type of workout that includes working alongside others but is not personalized, includes small group training often offered at boutique studios, CrossFit gyms, and some larger commercial gyms. These workouts fall between large group exercise classes and semiprivate training. They do have more of a group exercise class feel with anywhere from a few people up to 10 or 15 people, depending on the size of the studio, and equipment available. These workouts are generally not personalized but often modifications are given. Pricing varies for small group training, but many studios offer monthly memberships, punch cards or paying for a single drop-in session is often available as well.

ONLINE TRAINING The last option for training that has become much more popular in recent years is online training. With online training, you have many options. You can still work with a personal trainer but virtually. This often includes a trainer writing and programming workouts that you perform on your own. Depending on the trainer and program, you can often provide feedback and the trainer can adapt the program based on that feedback and results. Other online programs include working in a group. This often entails a trainer offering a generalized program that a group of people follow. Often with these types of programs, some type of interaction and accountability check-ins are included such as a private group on Facebook to interact, ask questions, and receive feedback. Pricing for online training varies widely based on the components and services offered by the trainer. Again, ensure you are working with a qualified and knowledgeable fitness professional. In this day and age, personal training options are numerous. No longer is working with a trainer for the elite. Leveraging technology and the ability to customize sessions with various components allows you to work with a fitness professional in some capacity to help you reach your fitness goals! DIET TRENDS

A Guide to the Latest in

By Chef Elizabeth Buckingham

Between glossy magazines, social media, and your opinionated friends and co-workers, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the latest diet trends. Seemingly every week we’re inundated by the newest meal plan or juicing program, each guaranteed to provide more energy, clearer skin, lower inflammation, and rapid weight loss. But they can’t all work, right? How do we separate nutritional fact from aggressive marketing fiction? Read on to learn more about the most popular diet trends right now.

28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ AUGUST 2019

KETOGENIC DIET A high-fat, low-carb diet that was originally developed to treat severe epilepsy and other seizure disorders, the keto diet is far and away the most popular diet right now. It suggests that by restricting carbs, your body will be forced to burn fat. While most people lose weight initially, a true keto diet is exceptionally difficult to follow long-term, as it requires careful monitoring of all caloric intake, lots of math, and very little room for modification. It also heavily restricts (or eliminates entirely) vegetables and whole grains, which do have a place in healthy eating.

INTERMITTENT FASTING Another popular diet, intermittent fasting simply advocates long periods without consuming any calories at all, or consuming very small amounts. There are numerous variations, including the 5:2 – five days per week eating normally, with two days restricted to 400-600 calories. Again, most people will lose weight on this diet but it’s tough to maintain this level of rigidity for months or even years.

PALEO DIET The Paleo diet was recently usurped for ultimate trendiness by the keto diet, but there are still plenty of devout followers. Paleo requires eating foods theoretically available to our Paleolithic ancestors, which naturally eliminates grains, processed foods, alcohol, caffeine, and sugar. As with keto, the fundamentals behind this diet might be scientifically sound, but severely restricting major food groups makes it difficult to adhere to Paleo eating for a lifetime. Plus, as soon as “Paleo protein bars” hit the shelves you know it’s become a profit machine, since the basics of the diet eschew any packaged foods.

PLANT-BASED DIET All signs point to reduced overall consumption of meat for all Americans, not just those who identify as strictly vegetarian or vegan. Eating a plant-based diet doesn’t necessarily mean eliminating all animal products forever, just that your diet consists mainly of vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds, perhaps with small amounts of dairy, eggs or fish. This approach to eating offers tons of benefits, but as always, it’s easy to be swayed by health halos: doughnuts might be plant-based, but they’re still doughnuts. Food manufacturers are taking notice of this trend too, and creating tastier plant-based proteins beyond just soy nuggets or seitan burgers.

INTUITIVE EATING OR “UNDIETING” This concept can best be summed up as listening to your body. Eat when you’re hungry, not at regimented mealtimes, and eat until you’re 80% full, not overstuffed. True intuitive eating doesn’t label foods as good or bad, but recognizes the pleasures of eating and of maintaining a healthy relationship with food. Many chronic dieters swear that following the principles of intuitive eating has gotten them off the diet roller coaster permanently.

As a chef, nutritionist, and cooking teacher, I want people to understand that there simply is no one-size-fits-all approach to eating well. People and lifestyles and bodies and budgets are all different. In order to eat well consistently, you must find a plan that works for you; anyone can follow a diet for a few weeks, and some may yield dramatic results - but you have to eat every single day for the rest of your life, and short-term diets don’t provide long-term solutions. Plus, counting calories is notoriously inaccurate! Chronic or “yo-yo” dieting has been linked to numerous health problems, including eating disorders and higher risk of heart disease. Ultimately, no diet, powder, pill or shake will work until you change your relationship with food. Focus on a Mediterranean-style diet rich in unprocessed foods: whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and olive oil, with small amounts of well-raised dairy, eggs, and meat, and cook your food at home. Don’t eat things that come in packages or boxes. You’re guaranteed to lose weight and to be healthier overall. Author Michael Pollan puts it best: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” It doesn’t get any easier than that.

Farmer's Markets Burst with Best of the Summer Produce By Tina Eichner

August begins the cornucopia of tasty produce from our Colorado farmers. Seasonal fruits and veggies are starting to peak and the area’s numerous Farmer’s Markets are the perfect place to find the best specimens. The city’s most developed Farmer’s Market hands down is the Tuesday Evening Community Market at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church at 1700 W 10th Ave. in Broomfield. The weekly market is open from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesdays through September 24 and is celebrating its ninth season in 2019. The market opened in 2011 with 16 vendors, live music, and hundreds of shoppers. As word of the great vendors, abundant fresh food, free entertainment, and friendly volunteers spread throughout the community, the market grew and now boasts more than 50 vendors and thousands of visitors each summer. The market has become much more than a place to find great produce, it is a weekly community gathering spot, where neighbors find great music, food trucks, and fellowship. On top of that, the community impact is significant. In 2018, this market reported 9,703 pounds of food donated to Broomfield FISH, $1,200 provided to local teachers from 27 schools on Teacher Appreciation Day at the Market, and $4,180 given in SNAP/WIC vouchers through our Double Up Food Bucks program. A properly designed estate plan can provide substantial protections for your family. Most of these protections are ignored in basic estate plans. By example... Mary and Bill left their son, John, a substantial inheritance. John had a family and a successful career. Then came the accident. John lost control of his car and crashed into a school bus full of children. Many were hurt. John was sued and found negligent. The resulting claim far exceeded his auto insurance limits. After the insurance paid $1,000,000 to those injured, he faced a court judgment of more than $3,000,000. John was now bankrupt. Then he learned the good news. Bill and Mary had sought legal advice before their deaths. One lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning, because their estate was not taxable. He told them to name John as beneficiary on their assets, because “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling-oriented attorney who took the time to learn about them, their estate, and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect John after their deaths. So, Bill and Mary left their assets in a trust for John. As a result, John was able to keep his inheritance after the accident. While they never thought this would happen to their son, their foresight paid off. Bill and Mary had sometimes wondered if the planning they did was worth the extra time and effort. Clearly, it was worth it. If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that is producing results for families, attend one of our complementary workshops.

Foundation, Dancers Get Ready for 10th

September 26th

F

or the 10th year, Dancing with the Broomfield Stars returns to the 1STBank Center on Thursday, Sept. 26 and this year audience members are in for a few special surprises including a new format and structure for non-profit and dancer engagement. This year, participating non-profits are partners in the event, selecting their representative dancer or dance troupe, and helping with event organization and support. These organizations will all share in event proceeds as well.

PLANNED PERFORMERS •

Colorado Conservatory of Dance (CCD) will present an inspirational original dance featuring Kirsten Ditges Manning accompanied by CCD’s Ballet Expressions performers comprised of young dancers with special needs.

Mental Health Partners of Broomfield is excited to bring a joyful Swing dance with Susan Bellas and her teacher, Justin Carter of Fred Astaire Dance Studios.

A Precious Child will present a fun and upbeat number featuring longtime supporter and Broomfield resident Paula Reynolds and professional dancer Patrick Blaisure.

The Broomfield Veteran’s Memorial Museum honors the stories of our communities’ Veterans. Paula Coffman will honor the military, our youth, and the importance of learning from each other, through a dance created with the support of dancers DeAndre Carroll and Cory Klements.

Broomfield FISH is collaborating with Denver Dance Authority to create a lyrical team dance depicting the concept of “A Helping Hand” that highlights their mission of helping neighbors in need rise out of poverty.

Avista/St. Anthony’s North Hospital Foundations, Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities, Bal Swan Children’s Center and Imagine! will also be participating and performing.

This year the event will once again be emceed by Kylie Bearse of the 9News Weather Team, with special local performers presented while ballots are being counted. The show will include two former “Stars” turned ballroom dancers. Linda Johnson will perform with her Professional Coach Timmy Merz of Booth Dancesport and Tina Eichner will dance with her Professional Coach Lucio Escuadra, also of Booth. A special segment featuring students from Broomfield’s Dance Arts Studio is also planned, among other surprises. For more than 25 years, the Broomfield Community Foundation’s purpose has

34

THE BROOMFIELDER™ AUGUST 2019

been to enhance the Broomfield community by collecting contributions and providing support through grants to non-profit groups that help the citizens of Broomfield and the surrounding area. Their mission is to inspire the community to connect people with causes that meet the needs of neighbors through caring, compassion, and charitable giving. Each year at Dancing with the Broomfield Star, the Foundation gives out its grants for the year to dozens of organizations ranging from early childhood to the arts and everything in between. Broomfield Community Foundation Executive Director Marianna Williamson noted that her goal for donations this year is more than $100,000, a number that the event achieved last year. “We are so excited to introduce a new format this year and partner with our dancers in an event that helps meet their organizations’ financial needs,” she said.

BROOMFIELD STARS PRACTICING & REHEARSING Similar to the popular television show, the Broomfield Stars and dance instructors practice for several weeks and then showcase their rehearsed dance on the night of the event. This is a fun-filled evening with great food, entertainment, and a fantastic platform to give back to the community. Attendees vote on their favorite dancers by donating money and the act that brings in the most donations is declared the winner at the end of the evening. If you are not able to attend the event, you can still vote for your favorite non-profit act in advance via online donations.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Doors at the 1st Bank Center open at 5:30 p.m., with food provided by local restaurants served from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., and the show beginning at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $50 each for general admission seating; $75 each for floor seating; $1,000 for table sponsorship; and $25 for guests 18 years and younger. Food, parking, and the show are included in the ticket price. For tickets, to donate or for more information visit www.broomfieldfoundation.org.

Learn CPR for Free August 10

CPR Saves Lives By Sara Farris

No family history. No major symptoms or risks. Nothing really warned 36-yearold Julia Blechar that a cardiac event was coming her way and would nearly take her life if not for the quick actions of her husband.

E

arlier this year, Julia and her husband Chris were going through a typical day in their family. After school, they took their daughters to eat dinner and then went to see one of their daughters practice at the Colorado Conservatory of Dance in Broomfield. Julia was tired and did not feel well that evening, but she wasn’t overly concerned. However, only a few minutes into her daughter’s dance class, her world was turned upside down. The room was filled with activity, but as Chris looked over toward Julia, she looked dazed and soon became unresponsive. Chris laid his wife on the floor and dialed 911. Recalling the CPR class the couple had participated in only 18 months earlier, he sprang into action and began chest compressions. North Metro Fire paramedics arrived within four minutes and took over treating Julia, who was in cardiac arrest. They transported her to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she spent a week recovering. First responders and hospital physicians credit Chris’s actions for helping save Julia’s

North Metro Fire encourages residents of all ages to learn hands-only CPR in order to help save more lives in the community. The fire district offers free non-certification CPR classes each quarter. The next set of classes will be offered on August 10 at North Metro Fire’s Headquarters, 101 Spader Way in Broomfield. Participants are encouraged to sign up for free online at www.nmfr.org/ cpr to ensure a spot in one of the classes. Following each CPR class, residents may participate in the Stop the Bleed classes and learn how to apply a tourniquet and pack a wound in case of a traumatic injury. These lifesaving classes are made possible from support of generous community donors and supplies from Mile-High RETAC.

life and preventing any long-term deficits. Today, she is back to her normal activities and even trained for a 10K race over the spring. Fortunately, Julia’s story has a happy outcome. The sad truth is that 9 out of 10 people who go into cardiac arrest outside of the hospital won’t live to tell their story, according to the American Heart Association. However, those who receive CPR from a bystander until first responders arrive, like Julia did, are two to three times more likely to survive.
