Happy Birthday Mitre 10

EIGHTY years is a long time to do one thing. Daylesford’s Jenkin family has been selling hardware to local DIY-ers from the very same spot (79 Vincent Street) for 80 years this month, yeah… wow! Jenkin and Thomas (Mitre 10) have been at it for soooo long, that they can remember selling meat safes and dynamite back in the day. (You don’t get that in aisle 75 at Bunnings). Russ, Lyndall and John Jenkin (who all still work at the store) are so pumped about their family’s octogenarian business that they’re throwing a party to celebrate: Friday, July 5, 11am ‘til 3pm. Visit the store for prizes and great specials, a CFA barbie and loads of stuff for the kids (face painting, colouring competitions and balloons) and a big birthday cake. Dale from The Block All-Stars will be there too. Then the 80 year old will have a nice cup of tea and a nana nap (or a cheeky sherry) out the back. For more info call Jenkin and Thomas: 5348 2245.

Black Swans and Banjos only in Hepburn

IF YOU’VE ever picnic-ed lakeside you’ve probably experienced the ‘black swans of trespass’. They swagger up uninvited and try to pinch your sandwiches. Not cool swans. Back off with your red-beaked peckiness. Now, we’ve heard the Black Swans of Trespass are appearing at the Savoia Hotel (69 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) Saturday, July 6, ahh, but these Black Swans won’t swagger up and try to steal your beer. These banjo totin’, double-bass poundin’ alt-country lads perform a wide selection of traditional tunes, including a bit o’ reggae, some New Orleans jazz, a bit of Australian folk, some ragtime jazz, a bit o’ Tom Waits, bluegrass, and even a bit of the Mario Bros theme… if you’re lucky. CC Thornley plays a mean five-string electric tenor banjo and pushes the boundaries of how it’s usually played. It’s a sight to see a Black Swan play a banjo. Particularly with half your lunch in its mouth. Band’s on at 9pm, entry is free.

AT APPROXIMATELY $2000 a kilo, the ugly looking, lumpy black truffle costs more than the average first car. This tasty chunk of fungi is grown with great success around here and is celebrated this time of year with workshops, feasts, and themed degustations created by truffle loving chefs. Saturday, July 6, Brigalani Truffiere will be hosting a tour of their property with a working dog demonstration (yep the pooches with the clever noses sniff out these dirty delicacies). Watch the doggies do their thing in the dirt, then follow up the morning with a trufflicious three course lunch at Sault Restaurant (2349 Ballan-Daylesford Road) from midday. The day begins at Brigalani Truffiere at 10:30am. Find them 12 kms north of the Western Highway, off the Ballan-Daylesford Road at Spargo Creek. Cost is $100. Bookings through Sault on 5348 6555. Hibernation

lost the guide to where to find it

is not an option MID WINTER is a fantastic time to take stock, refocus and actively listen to your body to carry yourself healthily through the cold months ahead. Yeah sure, that sounds great. The challenge is, that winter is also the perfect time to hibernate in your toasty house, under a blankie with a jar of Nutella and catch up on all those TV series you’ve been meaning to watch. However, three months of Nutella and telly ain’t gonna to make the body hum come springtime... A little inspiration is in order... Hepburn Retreat Centre is a vegan sanctuary for selfcare and natural living. They offer loads of inspiration for healthy and mindful living with regular yoga retreats and vegan cooking retreats, with the next Vegan cooking and Yoga Retreat will be held Friday, July 5, to Sunday, July 7. Experience two days of healthy vegan cooking, with lots of core warming, soul lifting yoga to keep you energised. This retreat includes hands-on vegan cooking classes, and raw food preparation sessions. The classes will introduce you to exciting, tasty, nutritious vegan food, and a range of cooking methods, ideas and ingredients, using fantastic fresh local, seasonal and organic produce. Across the weekend you’ll feast upon the delicious healthy vegan meals you create, as well as a little raw food indulgence, with smoothies, gluten free vegan cakes and bikkies to boot. (No need to stash the Nutella in the case ok?) The weekend workshops will include discussions on nutrition, ayurveda food, veganism, vegetarianism and yoga. Learn about growing your own vegies and edible weeds. (We’re feeling healthier just thinking about it.) Accommodation is on site with twin, triple share or single rooms available. Cost (full price) $370 (all inclusive) concessions and family prices are available. For more information, and to register for this retreat (and others – there’s another one in August if you miss this one), visit their website at: hepburnretreatcentre.com.au or telephone Ostii on 0424 442 219 or 5348 6696.

For the Record we love vinyl

BACK in the days of vinyl, buying a new album meant hours pouring over the artwork, hoping for an inner sleeve with band pics and lyrics and having to stop what you’re doing five (or so) tracks in, to manually lift the needle off the record, turn it over and place the needle back oh-socarefully to hear the rest of the tunes. (How did we cope?!) DJ Dusty Stylus lives in a world of vinyl with no shuffle and no random and loves a rummage through a milk crate of albums to discover the 12 inches time forgot. Sunday, July 7, he will be hitting the turntables at Cotton Club (Perfect Drop, 5 Howe Street, Daylesford) for a night of jazz noir, jukebox rhythm and blues, mod beat, boogaloo, and swinging internationals with a bit o’ soul and funk. Best bit is Dusty will be flipping the records for you, so you can kick back in the lounge, cocktail in hand and enjoy. Cotton Club kicks off at 7pm. Free entry. More info call 5348 3373.

Katie and Karin

making magical music

KATIE Noonan has one of Australia’s most extraordinarily beautiful voices. Her mantle at home surely must be structurally reinforced with carbon fibre to contain the weight of all the Aria awards and platinum albums she owns. Surely? A few years back Katie bumped into Karin Schaupp, who, y’know… just happens to be one of the finest classical guitarists in the world… and hey presto, it was a magical meeting of the musical minds, sparks flew and shazzam! They are now touring Songs of the Southern Skies; recreating tunes by some of Australia and New Zealand’s greatest songwriters. (Think: the Finn Brothers, Nick Cave, Gurrumul, Gotye, Bic Runga, Cold Chisel and other brilliant musical types). Magic indeed. Katie and Karin will play The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves St Castlemaine) Friday, July 12, from 8pm. Tickets $34 show only or $69 dinner and show. For more info and bookings phone: 5472 1196 or visit: theatreroyal.info.

Food, Art and Wifi grazie Nonna

WOULDN’T you love to have a Nonna? Non-Italians everywhere secretly wish they had a busy little Nonna, to pinch their cheeks, force-feed you deliciously monumental lasagnes (oh, if I have to Nonna), and hassle you into days of backyard tomato sauce production. Daylesford has a new Nonna in town. red nonna at 3 Howe Street is a new café/gallery with a feisty red kitchen and a delicious Italian inspired menu, full of tasty home cooking. The walls are hung with local art (for sale) and the space is spacious and warm, with communal tables inviting shared conversation and food. red nonna also shares her wifi, which is a bit awesome, to pull up a chair, whip out the laptop, order brekky, and say, write this magazine, *ahem* (thanks Belinda and Rachel!) The space is kid friendly and mothers’ groups are welcome. Find out what’s cookin’ on Facebook (search: red nonna) or call in: 8am–5pm (Closed Weds.)

Not Exactly

lost the guide to where to find it

a silent night

ALTHOUGH it seems like more of a marketing ploy than anything, ‘Christmas in July’ has its perks. One being that you get to gather your faves together for dinner (but as it’s not actually Christmas you don’t have to invite those people you are reeeally obliged to in December. Sweet.) Another bonus is that there is zero chance of a total fire ban, so the carols by candlelight extravaganza won’t be shut down or limited to glow sticks. Not that there actually IS a carols by candlelight organised, because IT’S NOT REALLY CHRISTMAS. Anyway. We are happy to push the barrow for C.I.J. (cute acronym – it’ll catch on) as Maldon is hosting an awesome Christmas in July street market Saturday, July 13, 3:30pm-11pm. There will be over 70 stallholders, selling food, gifts and gorgeousness. This fun community event coincides with the CFA bonfire and concludes with fireworks. Weee-ahhh ho ho ho. More info call: 0408 125 639 or visit Maldon.org.au.

The Masters of Metal

lost the guide to where to find it

it ain’t rock ‘n roll

MEMBERS of the Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia are permitted to use the internationally recognised diamond shaped ‘stamp’ of a kangaroo’s head on their precious works. This maker’s mark symbolises an Australian work of excellence. (Check your engagement rings ladies). The Contemporary Australian Silver and Metalwork award is being held at the Bendigo Post Office Gallery (51-67 Pall Mall, Bendigo) until July 28. Where many many kangaroo stamps will be carefully pressed into the bases of elegant silver ware and beautifully designed precious works. In conjunction with this contemporary award, Buda Historic Home in Castlemaine (42 Hunter Street) will host its own exhibition: The Masters of Metal. And although it sounds like a Metallica concert, it ain’t. Ernest Leviny and Stanley Ellis were two Castlemaine gentlemen who were masters of metalwork. Ernest Leviny was a nineteenth century silversmith of great significance. His family lived at the Buda homestead for 118 years. In 1988 the biennial award exhibition for Contemporary Australian Silver and Metalwork was established by Buda to commemorate the important contribution Ernest Leviny made to the Australian fine art landscape. This exhibition will feature their works, and works of the students Ernest and Stanley taught at Castlemaine Technical College. The exhibition runs until July 29. On Saturday, July 13, the two exhibitions will combine in a cross-venue event, named ‘A Spot of Tea and Silver’. At 1pm meet at the Post Office Gallery in Bendigo for an in-depth look at the best contemporary silver and metalwork being created across the nation right now. View works from award winners and witness practical demonstrations by students. Curator Clare Needham will discuss the exhibition. Then drive to Buda at Castlemaine, take tea in the Garden Room, and hear a floor talk by Masters Of Metal curator Lauretta Zilles. Entry is $15. Bookings are essential. For more info and bookings phone 5434 6088, or go to: budacastlemaine.org. 12

about Creswick

YOU’VE probably heard of Creswick Woollen Mills. Oh y’know, it’s just the only coloured woollen spinning mill of its type left in Australia. It’s a bit spesh, and it’s just down the road in Creswick (on Railway Parade). There used to be more than 50 woollen mills like this one, but the mill down in Creswick is the last one standing, and to this day continues to manufacture luxurious woollen fabric, throws, blankets, accessories and other items in blends of merino wool, cashmere, cotton, bamboo and alpaca, and sells them through their factory outlet in Creswick, and stores in Daylesford, Beechworth, Hawthorn and Elsternwick. In the school holidays the Creswick Mill introduces some of the prettiest alpacas in the region. (Damn straight we said pretty, c’mon, those big brown eyes and long lashes make Creswick’s alpacas more gorgeous than your average long legged sheep.) Come along and meet the friendly pretty ones. (It’s the least you can do, c’mon, they’d give you the wool off their back if they could, oh, hang on…) On Saturday, July 13, and Sunday, July 14, the mill is hosting a Cutest Cria Competition. (FYI: baby alpacas are called crias and they are outta-sight cute.) Kids are invited to judge the cutest cria, to win a prize. There’ll be activities and fun between 10am – 3pm both days. Take a peek at the Mill, see the working machinery up close. The kids are invited to feed the alpacas from the viewing deck while you have a hot chocolate and decide what luxurious item/s you’re going to buy… Well, being that it’s the middle of winter, you’ll probably need a couple of scarves, some gloves, a jumper or cardy, a throw, a blanket and Spring will be here before you know it, better get one of Creswick Woolen Mill’s famous rubber-backed woollen picnic blankets while you’re here too… The Creswick Woollen Mill is open every day 9am ‘til 5pm. Entry to school holiday activities is free. For more information on the Mill, their products and what’s on go to: creswickwool.com.au or call 9818 5055. 14

Getting Lucky B’BOOM, b’boom, b’boom… can you hear that? Ooh it’s our collective hearts, beating just a wee bit faster when we think of our secret town crush. Oh Clunes. You just make us feel all giddy and gooey. You with your good looks, your bookish charm, your vintage wares and great cafes and fancy new coffee and wine lounge Lucky Strike. *sigh* Down at 33 Fraser Street, Lucky Strike is causing quite a stir, with their fab head chef Gerard Phelan (ex Lake House, Atlantic and Rockpool) dishing up spesh provincial style dishes Friday to Monday. Their intimate performance space delivers live music every Saturday night, and on Saturday, July 13, John McNamara will be unleashing his fiery guitar and soulful vocals in a fab performance for the lucky ones who book early. storm the charcuterie CHARCUTERIE. It’s a fancy French word for the fancy French art of creating terrines, pate, rillettes, and sausages. Damian Sandercock loved making these delicacies so much that he turned his hobby into a business: The Piper Street Food Co. (89B Piper St). Now we all can share in the delights from his kitchen. Damian is passionate about fresh produce and flavour and he generously offers classes to teach you the secrets to creating your very own Frenchie treats for luscious picnics and fancy gatherings. Damian is hosting a Bastille Day (eve) class on Saturday, July 13, 9:30am – 1:30pm at the store. Learn how to create something elegant and exceptional out of the simplest ingredients. WINTER School Holidays. Three medium-sized-words that strike fear into parents everywhere. The challenge is to provide entertainment which wont bring a paddock of mud into your house, see them wind up in hospital with pneumonia or make you all go crazy-as-a-coconut housebound-stir-crazy-loco-fruitcake-tearing-the-wallsdown-bonkers. Victorian Goldfields Railway runs between Castlemaine and Maldon, and in the holidays they run a special Steam Trains for Kids weekend. (Saturday, July 13, and Sunday, July 14, at Maldon Station, Hornsby Street). It’s a WHOLE lot more than ‘just’ a steam train ride, with trolley rides, diesel rides, fairground rides, horse cart and donkey rides and a model railway and animal farm. Steam trains depart at 10:30am, 12pm and 1:30pm. Adult tickets are $25, kids (aged 2-15) $15 and family tickets are $75. For more information and bookings telephone 5470 6658 or visit: vgr.com.au.

THINK BACK to a time, a time of simultaneous innocence and excess. A time pre-Facebook, (eek!) pre-mobile phones, (ahh!) think waaaay back to a time when Madonna was younger than Taylor Swift. (!!!) The glorious days of leg warmers, Molly Ringwald, hair crimpers, shoulder pads, Ferris Bueller, Alex P Keaton, Ra-ra skirts, all the Coreys, girls with big hair, boys with bigger hair. Oh the Eighties. The decade when we hairsprayed away our ozone layer. If you are nostalgic for neon and acid wash, (and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to re-live those outrageous days of Eye of the Tiger, Duran Duran and Rick Astley?) it’s time to raid the wardrobe and your favourite op shops, as The Kyneton Music Festival is hosting an 80s Prom Night and you are invited!! (Squeeeeeel!!!!!) (Dude. Take a chill pill.) Saturday, July 13, at Kyneton High School Hall (1-9 Epping Street, Kyneton) the Delorians will be programmed to re-enter the 80s smack bang at the height of the good stuff. DJs Matthew Sigley and Jed Palmer will be spinning vinyl to have you dancing on the ceiling together in electric dreams. (Choice.) As we go to print the Prom Committee is making final preparations for decorating the hall, with gleaming streamers and decorations ensuring the perfect backdrop for all the cheesy photos you know you’re going to want to post on Facey. Get the friends together, pick a prom date or go stag, just make sure you dress the part all you Prom Kings and Queens. For more info in the 80s you’d have to write a letter, take it to the post office, buy a stamp and wait up to a week for a reply...but since we are living (on a prayer) (sorry)… IN THE FUTURE BABY, The Kyneton Music Festival have a “Facebook” page where you can, like, find all the information, (search for ‘80s prom night’ under events) Tickets $20 from InstrAmental Music (13 High Street, Kyneton) (for sure) or via try booking at: trybooking. com/51850 FAR OUT how ACE is it going to be?! Two New Exhibitions

lost the guide to where to find it

wag wag wag wag woof

STOCKROOM in Kyneton (98 Piper Street) is a creative hub loaded with contemporary art, vintage and industrial collectables, and super-spesh unique hand made creations from outstanding Australian artists, designers and makers. Stockroom houses two galleries, and shows regular exhibitions, two of which are opening this month, but more about that later. The contemporary space itself is heeeuge. They host all manner of events and shows. It is indeed a unique and important arts space for Central Victoria. Now, sure, all this arty stuff is great, you get the picture, it’s an awesome space… but the truth of the matter is that Stockroom is just a very large, and very fancy kennel. There, we said it. Stockroom has a resident pooch. He goes by the name of Black Angus. Black Angus has nuzzled and sniffed his way into the hearts of the Stockroom clan, and now makes best buddies with each of the visitors to the gallery. Black Angus is a big and beautiful Labrador Mastiff with a penchant for foot sitting, stealing food, demanding pats, and being lazy. The furry Stockroom mascot has his own Facebook page (he’s mad about FB) with many of his new pals taking selfies with him and posting them on Facey as soon as they can (I mean why wouldn’t you? He’s brilliant.) Search Black Angus at Stockroom and like him why don’t you? Or go and visit, give him a lovely pat and get your very own selfie and warm Black Angus foot sit. (Sittings are free). Saturday, July 13, two new exhibitions open at Stockroom (Black Angus is well aware this is an awesome opportunity for you to go and pat him… don’t let him down.) The exhibitions are Finding Yourself Home Alone – A series of contemplative photographic self portraits by Pia Johnson, and Hard-on For Homewares by Bonnie Hanlon, a series of works depicting items that feather our nests. The opening is from 4:30-7pm, and the exhibitions run until August 4. Black Angus is available for patting ongoing. For more information go to: stockroomkyneton.com or call 5422 3215. 20

at The Comma CASTLEMAINE, (otherwise affectionately known as North Northcote) has more artists per capita than anywhere except for Fitzroy, and possibly a small town that sometimes goes by the initials of NYC. James Evans and Paul Coronel recognised there was a need for a creative hub-pub where the creative minds of the region could unload, download, mingle and unwind, gather and enjoy each other’s creative vibe. Together they have transformed the old Commercial Hotel, into The Comma Bar and Bistro. (16 Hargraves Street) The Comma is a pub with all the bits a great pub needs, like: unpretentious, affordable, tops pub food and decent live music (but more about that later), and being an arts pub it also has an exhibition space and gallery. The Comma invites all manner of artists, storytellers and musos within the community to meet at The Comma for inspiration over a beer. (There are even offices for artists to lease upstairs – just ask them for more info.) They have a program of monthly exhibitions from local and visiting artists. The first Sunday of the month hosts jazz jam sessions, the last Sunday of the month invites poetry readings, there are story-telling sessions by the hearth, (hear tales tall and true) and as for the gigs… well! Here we go! Every Friday night live bands take to the stage. Friday, July 5, The Exit Crowd will improvise some crazy-ass funk and ska and whatever else takes their fancy on the night – Be warned you will be up and moving! Friday, July 12, Ballarat muso Dan Rolls rolls into town with his brilliantly luscious 12-string guitar-work and wicked djembe percussion from Gez Clancy. Friday, July 19, saddle up for a Country Cavalcade with Rex Watts and Mick Ahearne and their fave original and altcountry classics, and Friday, July 26, Pugsley Buzzard will floor you with his unique blend of dark hoodoo blues and rollicking boogie. The Comma is open 11am-10pm Sunday - Thursday and 11am-11pm Friday and Saturday. For more information go to thecomma.net.au or call 5472 2205.

Hibernating Nectarines and sleepyhead pears

SHHHH… Can you hear that? It sounds like a little snore… It seems to be coming from your garden… Shhhh, best tiptoe out there in your gumboots, make no noise now, your fruit trees are asleep for the winter. Even though they’re all tucked up cosy in their mulch, happily slumbering on until spring, they’re not completely dormant, fruit trees like a little winter lovin’ too. The Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) is hosting a Winter Fruit Tree Care Workshop, Sunday, July 14, from 11am. Discover what you can do for your trees whilst they snooze away the cold months, to ensure they deliver baskets of beautiful fruit in summer. The workshop covers: fertilizing, frost protection, mulching, pruning and more. Hoik on the wellies, don your warmest beanie and head to Blackwood. THINK of the furthest place from Glenlyon that you can. Yep. BINGO. Senegambia, West Africa. You got it in one. Each and every Friday night the Glenlyon General Store (63 Barkly Street) hosts live music, and Friday, July 19, they’ll welcome to the stage one of Senegambia’s finest musical artists: Jali Buba Kuyateh. Jali Buba was born into a musical family, who for 2000 years (!) have been the heart of Senegambian music. Nice pedigree! He has played the kora (West African Harp) since he was a wee tot, and now he is a master of his art, playing festivals around the globe, especially Australia, where he has played from WOMADelaide to Port Fairy to the Melbourne International Festival. It’s a long way from West Africa, but now Jali Buba lives down the road in Malmsbury(!) lucky us! Experience the energy and exuberance Jali Buba brings to the stage when he plays on the 19th. Cheers to a Sunday sesh SUNDAYS roll around with regular certainty. Y’know, every seven days or so. We love Sundays. They’re a cushy buffer between Saturday night and Monday. They’re a gift of sweet nothingness to us Monday-Fridayers. They’re a crazed day of spontaneity or predictable planned laziness. Sundays are awesome. There should be more of them. The Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road) relishes a Sunday, and is prone to sudden outbreaks of Sunday Sessionitis (the much favoured cousin to Mondayitis) and Sunday, July 21, the Old Hep will deliver a Sunday sesh for all time. Joe Camilleri (The Camilleri Trio) will be playing tunes (from 3pm) for those who find themselves in the pub on that particular Sunday arvo. Joe Camilleri is one of Australia’s finest musicians and songwriters, and will deliver many faves to the lucky peeps who score tix to this intimate show. Fresh Baked

lost the guide to where to find it

warm and fuzziness

LOCAL lass Michelle Symes is mad about baking. She bakes up batches of delicious bikkies every day for her little business The Vintage Baker (which you can buy all over the region – try Daylesford IGA and local cafes). Last year Michelle cooked up another idea that was anything but half-baked. (Ho ho – like what we did there?) After thinking about the plight of friends that were a little flat and could do with a friendly boost, she launched Baking Our Blues Away – an annual day of goodwill, where everyone is invited to bake something to lift the spirits of someone who could do with a bit of a pick up. Social media got a sniff of the delicious concept and it took off. Celebrity chefs including Nigella Lawson, Matt Preston, Annabel Crabb and Julie Goodwin re-tweeted about it, and over 5,600 people around the globe took the pledge to bake something special for someone in need. Nice huh? Baking Our Blues Away is unique in that it doesn’t assist a charity, no money needs to be donated, it’s just a day of conversation, community and cake. This year Baking Our Blues Away will be held on Monday, July 15. Think of someone you know who’s not their usual self, someone caring for a sick child, a colleague going through a hard time, an elderly neighbour, or just someone who needs a friend, and bake them something to put a smile on their dial. With so many Australians living with anxiety or depression, the small gesture of giving a home baked treat will help the recipient feel loved and appreciated. Sharing a cuppa and a conversation can lift the spirits, and help resolve issues. They say a problem shared is a problem halved, (and a cake shared definitely halves the calories) so it’s win-win really. For more info go to Baking Our Blues Away on Facebook and click ‘join’ to show that you will be baking on the day. Then share it with all your Facebook friends to spread the love, community awareness, and cake. Twitter: @bakingourblues, tweet the love with #bakingourbluesaway or visit the website at: bakingourbluesaway.com.au.

Watoto, I don’t think we’re in Uganda anymore…

DOWNTOWN Daylesford is a long way from Uganda, Africa. Yet, the kids from Watoto Children’s Choir have made the journey and are in Australia for a series of shows as part of their Beautiful Africa - A New Generation tour, including a performance at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street), Wednesday, July 24, 7pm-9:30pm. The Daylesford Community Church have organised this free concert, and the event seeks to raise awareness about the plight of orphaned and vulnerable kids in Africa. Watoto is a Christian organisation offering holistic care, medical help and education, as well as spiritual guidance to the children and women of Uganda. Come and hear the stories of the people of Uganda, and meet the next generation as they perform energetic songs of praise and positivity. For more info call the Daylesford Community Church 5348 3222 or go to daylesfordcommunitychurch.com (search special events).

an entirely voluntary basis

LOVE A volunteer! Vollies are tops. They just go and DO stuff because it needs to be done, for free, for their community. For us! And boy there are LOADS of amazing vollies in our community. The town of Woodend has a thriving brigade of volunteers, (the latest Census revealed that 1 in 4 Woodenders volunteer for their community! Wow!!) Woodend has recognised there’s a need to coordinate the vollies. So they’ve decided to create a group to connect their outstanding volunteers to the groups that need them. The launch of Woodend Connections will be held at Woodend Neighbourhood House (47 Forest Street) Thursday, July 25, at 10am. If you volunteer in the Woodend region and want to connect with others, or have a need for volunteers for your club or group, come along and discover the great things our volunteer network does and the even greater things ahead. More info call Janet or Lisa 5427 1845.

Walk the Line

lost the guide to where to find it

into Lyonville

WELL DONE. You’re reading lost. And since we don’t deliver, this means that you have ventured out of your cosy warm abode to do so. No mean feat this time of year. We appreciate the monumental effort it takes to launch yourself out the front door into that face-slap of cold. If you’re not big on that cold face-slap of winter air, we recommend you purchase a doona suit and balaclava to venture out Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27, as the best lil’ country hall in the known universe, Lyonville Hall (Bremner Avenue), is hosting a very spesh event. Song of the Outlaw, The Legend of Johnny Cash is rollin’ into town. This brilliant Johnny Cash tribute commemorates the tenth anniversary of the death of the Man In Black, and celebrates the life and incredible legacy of his music. Award winning singer Mikelangelo summons his inner Cash and croons his way through an evening of Johnny Cash tunes, from the early Sun days to the Columbia years, to the renaissance of his final American recordings. Mikelangelo has toured the globe to great acclaim, and the delightful dream pop chanteuse St Clare joins him on stage for the Carter/Cash duets. Heaven. Team these two with Felix Potier on guitar and Tyron Shaw on double bass, (both members of the Rechords), tuck yourself in at the coolest, coziest country hall you’ll ever see and shazzam, you’ll be transported to Cashland. The wee hall will be toasty with mulled wine, hot soup, and bar, and outdoor fires will be burnin’ ring of fire style, to keep you warm if you venture outside (and happen to have forgotten the doona suit). It has been a while between gigs at Lyonville Hall, and they are always massively popular… (uhh, der, just because it’s one of the greatest live venues in Australia) …and when the next best thing to Johnny Cash plays, um… you best snaffle tickets toot-suite. Like, NOW. Tickets are $20 and available from Brick Lane Bazaar (34 Vincent Street, Daylesford) or The Radio Springs Hotel (1 High Street, Lyonville). For more info call Kareena Hodgson on 0410 514 972. 32

Just the Tonic

lost the guide to where to find it

for our long winter WEDNESDAY is to Hump Day as July is to Hump Month. And we don’t know about you, but as soon as we hit Wednesday it might as well be the weekend. The down-hill slide into the weekend is a sweeeet feeling: you’re past the ughh of Monday, the ok, better-actually-do-some-work of Tuesday and suddenly you’re freefalling from Wednesday into weekend bliss. By our calculations that equates to July being the magic portal to Summer. And we swear it’s not just wishful thinking by us landlocked, frostbitten, thermalunderwearing Central Victorians. The winter solstice has been and gone baby, the days are getting longer, sure there’s ice on the windscreen each morn, and we’re still breathing steam until after 11am, but that’s just cute, yeah? Daylesford & Hepburn Mineral Springs Co. are well aware that it’s virtually summer and have appropriately launched two new mixers to their range. Tonic and Soda. Hooray! To us, an icy G&T with fat slices of lime, SCREAMS almost summer. And as for a vodka, lime and soda… well, that’s outof-control high summer right there. Might as well break out the banana lounges right now. The new tonic on the block is a bit spesh. The tonic flavour comes from the ingredient quinine, which is made from the bark of the Cinchona tree. Fascinating stuff sure, but the really cool bit is when you see it under black light (you know that light that makes your teeth look blue in a nightclub?) well it makes tonic blue too. The Daylesford & Hepburn Mineral Springs Co. tonic water has the teeniest bluish tinge to it, (thanks Cinchona tree) and despite the lost offices lacking in black light globes, we trust Brylie and Mitch that their Tonic does indeed glow in the dark under the right conditions. Awesome. Buy the new locally produced tonic and soda waters at Tonna’s (141 Vincent St) for $2 a 275mL bottle or $40 (case of 24). And Cellarbrations, (55 Vincent St). Ice for your drinks is available on your windscreen (for free) until early October. For more info on the 11 other flavours of the fab local mineral water go to dhmsco.com.au.

The Holy Grail

lost the guide to where to find it

of fundraisers

JUNIOR football clubs love a fundraiser. A sausage sizzle down the street on a cold Saturday morning, a chocolate drive that mum gets into when the kiddies are at school… ahem *nothing*… and those raffles you have to flog off to your colleagues at work. (Come on, you know you want a foot spa… it’s only a dollar a ticket.) Well the Woodend Hawks Junior Football Club have outdone themselves this year with their major fundraiser... they’ve managed to wrangle the holy grail himself, Mark Seymour! Saturday, July 27, Mark will perform at St Ambrose Hall (Templeton Street) to help raise much needed funds for the local kids’ footy team. Tickets are $30 (+booking fee) and doors open at 7pm. Get behind the Woodend kids and help them have a cracking year of footy (and a tops night out yourself). Book through woodendhawks.com.au or for more info email: treasurer@woodendhawks.com.au.

All’s Fayre in Love

lost the guide to where to find it

and food

GLENLYON is no bustling metropolis, that’s for sure. The only things that bustle in Glenlyon are the black sheep jostling for some fresh hay in the paddocks near the bend… and occasionally a few kids as they post letters to Jade the resident fairy at 63 ¼ Barkly Street. Yet, this non-bustling village will boast little elbow room at least once this year, at the fifteenth Glenlyon Fine Food and Wine Fayre. This super popular and oh-so-delicious event is circled in bold red on the calendars of many a foodie from all over the state. The Fayre brings together more than 35 of the region’s finest food producers, vignerons and chefs, and together they’ll be serving up offerings of mouthwatering morsels, and offer tastings of new vintages of outstanding wines, bubbles and brews. They’ll also let you in on their kitchen tips and secrets at cooking demos throughout the day. Expect to taste amazingness from Kyneton’s Piper Street Food Company, deliciousness from Spade to Blade, decadent chocolate from Sweet Cins, local truffles, potatoes, cheeses, sample tasty olive oils and Glenlyon saffron – (yes! Saffron grows in Glenlyon! Who knew?!) Take in a cooking demo from much loved Daylesford restaurant: Kazuki’s, see Damian Sandercock from Piper Street Food Co, and Christine Lewis from 65 Main will be whipping up a fabbo brekky. (Recently we spied Christine at a Masterchef masterclass on the telly… so hopefully she’ll try out some of her new tricks on us on the day? Please?) And there will be many others sharing their culinary tricks and treats with us all. The event will be held at the Glenlyon Shire Hall (on Barkly Street) on Sunday, July 28, 10am ‘til 4pm. Tickets are $12.50 which includes your wine tasting glass, and all the tastings, sips, and samples your tastebuds can handle. For more info go to Glenlyon.vic.au (you can book online through this site) or buy tickets on the day.

of classy

LAKE HOUSE is synonymous with deliciousness. And each season they host masterclasses with some of Australia’s best chefs and winemakers. Deep into winter what could be better than to spend the day in a warm kitchen surrounded by several of the country’s finest foodies? Sunday, July 28, Lake House is hosting its winter Masterclass with Adam D’Sylva from Coda and Tonka, Scott Pickett from The Estelle and St Crispin, winemaker Gilles Lapalus from Sutton Grange, and Alla Wolf-Tasker playing gracious host (and chef) and offering commentary and stories throughout the day. This masterclass also includes an extra special truffle workshop. The day runs from 9:30am ‘til 4pm, and costs $195 which includes a full day of demonstrations by all three chefs, recipes to take home, tastings, a baguette lunch, wine tasting and refreshments. For more info and bookings (essential) phone: 5348 3329 or visit: lakehouse.com.au.
