MOTORING:in the Spotlight... Audi R8 V10 Plus Coupe By Tim BarnesClay, road test Journalist for Confused.com.

AUDI’S new R8, the superstar of the Germanic marque’s range stirs up an intoxicating stew of sensations when you slide behind its wheel. Not only does the alluring coupe look good enough to take a bite out of, it almost hypnotises you. It toys with your reasoning, enticing you to toss away your troubles and immerse yourself in its company.

You will experience glowing cheeks, a hammering heart and

clammy hands when you first gun the Audi. And inside your body there’ll be changes that confirm the God of desire’s arrow has been fired. What I’m declaring is that you’ll fall in love, or certainly lust, with the two door supercar. It’s a proper beauty; a work of automotive art and the new model has become even more staggering to look at, let alone drive. The front end now has an angular front grille and full LED headlights. While the LEDs are standard, laser lights are optional, with the power to illuminate the road up to 600m ahead. At the rear, thing seems lower and broader than before and trapezoid pipes supersede the oval exhausts of old. Inside, a virtual cockpit display can be controlled totally by push buttons on the flat-bottomed steering wheel, or by means of a dial on the console. Getting comfortable in the V10 Plus’ bucket seats is easy and the R8 is surprisingly straightforward to drive. That said; the snorting, visceral tone emitting from the powertrain, assembled behind the two front chairs, keeps you respectful of the Audi’s capabilities at all times. This V10 Plus sits at the pinnacle of a two-model outfit, supported up by a less heady ‘standard’ V10. The engine is shared with the unbridled Lamborghini Huracan, churning out 602bhp. 0-62mph is done in a bullet-out-of-a-muzzle quick 3.2 seconds and you can press on to a top speed of 205mph. Gloriously insane? Of course. A seven-speed S tronic gearbox is standard in all V10 models. The fast shifting dual‐clutch transmission features an ingenious launch control function that provides the best possible traction when the car flexes its muscles and takes off. The might of the engine’s output momentarily thumps you back into your seat when the Audi’s clout is unleashed via the Quattro all‐wheel drive system. And the sound of the car is almost as

06

@carwriteups

seductive as its looks. Even at moderate speed there’s a deep, multi-layered, glorious rumble. But hit the R8’s ‘Sports Exhaust’ button and you get a gratifying crackling and popping on the downshifts. A car’s ability to accelerate quickly and reach a searing top speed is, inherently, considered necessary. However, it’s the handling dynamics, and talent to drive briskly through the bends, that make for a spine-tingling driving experience. And that’s where the R8 V10 Plus delivers. The new Audi will turn your mind to marmalade on the straights and it’ll make your liver quiver on B roads. But what it does best is go around corners quickly with the ultimate stability - and that, of course, is what every auto aficionado hungers for.

Project Shoeboox, Oxford, are collecting

Items such as Shower Gel, Soap, Toothbrushes and Deodorant are a welcome gift for these woman who have left their homes in order to start again after suffering violence. This year ODAS are expanding their collections to include helping new people with food welcome packs as well as gift boxes of toiletries. The refuges do keep supplies of non-perishable food (that is things like UHT milk, tea, coffee, sugar, cereal, dried pasta, tins of soup etc.) to give out to women when they arrive, and at the moment supplies are low.

08

Donations of goods and completed boxes may be left at one of the collection points listed on their Facebook Page. One collection point locally is Thame Therapy Clinic. Shoeboxes can be left there between now until 14th December when they will be taking them to the distribution centre in Headington Oxford to be given to women and children in refuges over the Christmas period. Which Wine

Food & Drink Choosing wine can be a bit of a minefield, and it’s all too easy to get it wrong. Follow our cheat’s guide to creating the perfect match. Fish Course - Delicate fish dishes call for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. Rich sauces, however, require wellbodied whites like Chardonnay. Serving salty seafood? Champagne works surprisingly well.

Spicy Dishes - You’ll want a juicy, spicy wine to complement these dishes. Look for a Malbec or Syrah. Alternatively, a dry Riesling works well with spicy veggie recipes. Juicy Red Meat - Bring out a rich red, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Turkey - Choose a full-flavoured white, like a white Côtes du Rhône, or a delicate red, such as a Frappato. Veggie Main - There is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be paired with white wine. In actual fact, medium reds work well with lots of veggie dishes, particularly tomato based recipes. Cheese Course - There’s no easy answer here. Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder. In general, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. Buttery sauces work well with buttery whites, for example. Have fun with your choices and enjoy!

Business Matters

Many big businesses struggle to control idle chatter and vast amounts of money are actually spent on trying to manage people away from gossiping so they can focus on the job at hand. General chitchat and lack of focus can break small businesses, wasting vast amounts of time and money. This said, certain conversation is productive and necessary in all businesses. By Mark Tubb.

Business Mentor and Co-Director at Princes Risborough Golf Club

Here are the types of constructive conversations that help make small businesses succeed where big business fails. 1. CONVERSATIONS BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

Employees are individuals and have feelings and emotions. A Boss making sure the people inside a business feel valued is vital. If people don’t feel secure and happy they can’t work together to face customers properly, because they’re too busy infighting. Results produced by any business are built on the foundations of relationships between people. So tell your staff they are valued and put the effort in to really get to know them and their needs. Answer their questions honestly and quickly. Likewise the Employee should seek to make the Boss secure that they appreciate her/ him and value the job both through conversation and hard work.

2. CONVERSATIONS SHOULD TURN INTO “PLANS THAT GENERATE ACTIONS”

Conversations should be honest and direct and where possible end in a plan with specific actions that need to be taken by specific times.

3. CONVERSATIONS TO OPEN IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Engaging conversations, exploring and opening up new ideas and insights are equally vital. You and/or your staff may be on the front line or a step back from it. All will have good ideas and realistic fears on what could harm or benefit the business. Discuss and listen, take the time to create a culture that encourages exploratory but not repetitive “business related conversations”.

4. CONVERSATIONS THAT UNCOVER AND RESOLVE BREAKDOWNS BEFORE THEY HAPPEN

There are mistakes, breakdowns and failures happening in every business. Some are through lack of experience or training and some are through lack of focus. If not discussed honestly and early then people can simply break and give up. Encourage a “lessons learned” culture that promotes honesty. So tell your staff the consequences of a mistake in terms of cost to the business but make it clear that as long as they discuss the mistake with you and all learn from it you will view this cost as an investment for the future. The lesson learned will then be the end of the matter. All too often mistakes are covered up, ignored and repeated, through fear. If the fear is removed by making the lesson learned a positive action, the business can improve and it will help breed success.

FIX Sparkle like a Christmas Star PARTY PIECES FOR THE LADIES

Try to go BEYOND THE BLACK and look for emerald green, navy, plum or bronze, much softer and more flattering for the average skin tone. DAMSEL IN A DRESS, TK MAXX and LK BENNETT have stunning classic collections of cocktail dresses this season in beautiful colours. Metallic and sparkle is always a festive season hit - go for light boleros (MONSOON, H&M) or sequin skirts (TOP SHOP) if a whole sparkly dress makes you feel a little like a bauble. Not a brand I often talk about but JANE NORMAN have a great sale on their party wear if you would prefer to spend less on a ‘wear once a year’ outfit and ASOS.COM have some gorgeous original designs and DEBENHAMS.COM also have a great online sale including designer dresses such as a Julien McDonalds Ruched Dress for less than thirty pounds. They also have a great selection of Jumpsuits in various colours - jumpsuits, especially wrap-over, create a flattering shape either with narrow legs above the ankle or over-long wide-leg trousers (team with gold, silver or diamanté sandals).

Hello December readers... It’s Christmas month where mayhem ensues and shopping falls into many categories monotonous, mountainous, manic and generally far from manageable. I hope to help you out, well, at least on the clothes front and make it easier for you to find some smart and sassy clothes to see you through the festive season. My PARTY PIECES will give the ladies some ideas for buying a new outfit and for Men, the DRESS TO THRILL section has some suggestions of darker colours and style following on from the latest Bond movie which, as always, has been uber popular and has repercussions in fashion (white tuxes are back with a vengeance). Do get in touch if you need any help and I can take the pain out of shopping by doing it for you, clothes only though - gift shopping is not my bag!! Have a fantastic festive season with love, Jo xx

KEEPING WARM IN A MANLY FASHION Unlike women, men generally just need an extra layer and a smart thicker wool mix jacket looks the bees knees especially worn with a blending woollen scarf. (Scarves, like manbags, are more than cool and ask any lady, we think they look great). Although I would recommend a taught torso for skin-tight jumpers, unless you have the time to train for blockbuster movies like the Mr Craig I would suggest some looser v-necks in darker colours (see below) Gents and/or a great blazer (so many of them around right now) buy bold colour, to wear over your smarter seasonal wear.

TOP TIP

but darker hues for an alternative to a light shirt.

TOP TIP Ladies DRESS TO THRILL - Men, tone down your shirts. If you’re likely to be wearing a pair of Choose something (one navy, grey or black trousers be a bit adventurous and thing) that sparkles/glitters & keep the rest to cotton, silk or try on some of the dark toned shirts around this winter. soft wool. Buy dramatic lip If you’re a cool skin tone burgundy, dark charcoal grey colour in red or plum but in or dark navy will go perfectly with your black, charcoal gloss rather than lipstick or dark navy trousers/jeans. For warm skin tones (i.e. for a softer look. if burgundy makes you look like you need a month in the Bahamas) then go for brighter navy, teal or orange red. These colours will work well with brown, navy or steel grey trousers and create a different look to the norm of workwear outfits - dark trousers + light shirt. Dental Health

Combat Cavities

Regular dental check-up’s are important to assess the health of not only your teeth but your whole mouth. Checking for tooth decay is just one part of a thorough dental examination as your dentist will also be likely to evaluate the health of your gums, perform a head and neck examination (to look for anything out of the ordinary) and examine your mouth for any indications of oral cancer, diabetes or vitamin deficiencies. These illnesses are however in the minority and the more common dental problems that the dentists at Stokenchurch Dental Care see are easily avoidable. This month Yvonne from Stokenchurch Dental talks us through three of the most common oral conditions they deal with at the surgery and how you can manage them.

Cavities

When plaque builds up on the surface of the teeth and eats away at enamel, it can form a hole in the tooth. Plaque is a sticky substance full of bacteria that feeds on sugar in the foods we eat and subsequently produces acids. The acids in plaque dissolve the enamel, creating holes called cavities. Once a cavity is formed, your dentist will have to fill it.

Solution: Getting rid of plaque is the best way to combat cavities. You can do this by brushing twice a day, flossing daily and visiting your dentist at least once a year for a professional cleaning and examination.

Gum Disease

Your gums protect and support your teeth and the tissue that holds them to the bone. When they aren’t healthy, you risk loss of those pearly whites - and damage to your overall oral wellbeing. Gum disease, also called gingivitis in the early stages and periodontitis in its advanced stage, is caused when plaque attacks the gums. Red, swollen gums can be one of the first signs of gingivitis combined with bleeding whilst brushing. If it advances to periodontitis, the gums will start to pull away from the teeth and form spaces that can become infected. Your odds of getting gum disease are higher if you smoke, are pregnant, are a diabetic or grind or clench your teeth. If not treated, this can lead to eventual tooth loss.

Solution: Regular flossing and brushing your

20

teeth correctly can reserve the effects of gum disease.

Enamel Erosion

Tooth enamel is the strongest substance in your body. It’s a semi-clear, hard, outer layer that protects your teeth from daily wear and tear. It also keeps you from feeling temperature extremes from the hot and cold things you eat and drink. The enamel on your teeth can be worn down by the acids in foods and drinks, and by overbrushing. Signs of erosion include discolouration, and cracks and chips. You may also notice that your teeth are more sensitive to hot or cold foods, drinks, and sweets, since they can get through holes in your enamel to the nerves inside which can cause severe pain. You are more susceptible to cavities when your enamel erodes your teeth.

Solution: To prevent enamel loss, cut out highly acidic food and drinks, brush with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush and drink water throughout the day. You can also try finishing a meal with a glass of milk or a piece of cheese as this will cancel out acids. For further advice or if you have any concerns about your own dental health, call Stokenchurch Dental Care on 01494 483413 to book an appointment with one of their friendly dental practitioners.

FOOD INTOLERANCE & sensitivity testing

Do you suffer with abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, headaches? Selina Hatherley (RSHom), of Thame Therapy Clinic explains how these can be some of the symptoms associated with intolerance or sensitivity to certain foods. www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

Vega testing can test for sensitivity to

substances such as wheat, dairy, pollens and chemicals, as well as testing for vitamin and mineral imbalance. As a Vega practitioner, Selina uses this simple test to help identify which substances are causing problems. You may or may not have some idea of the food or food groups that cause you a problem. However, it is really useful to keep a food diary for at least a week before testing. • • • •

Note what you eat & drink When you eat & drink How you feel after you eat or drink It is important that you drink plenty of water before, as testing is most effective when you are hydrated

The Vega Test method uses two hand electrodes, one the patient holds, the other is a testing “pen” used by the practitioner. Both electrodes are attached to the Vega machine. Vials of substances – food, drink, chemical etc, are put into the machine while the practitioner presses the testing pen onto an acupressure point on the patient’s hand. The response of the patient’s body to each substance is determined by change in electromagnetic conductivity and shown on the machine’s voltage meter.

Once problematic substances have been identified, the practitioner will discuss whether they need to be avoided, or whether combinations of foods may need to be changed or avoided. It is useful to keep a food diary for a month until the next follow up appointment. You will also talk about diet, lifestyle, and medical history, and as a registered homeopath, Selina will normally give a remedy to help with symptoms. The Vega machine can also test for sensitivity to pollens and other substances – you can even bring something along, such as washing powder or medication to be tested in the machine. Homeopathy is safe for all ages and all stages. Vega testing is not suitable for those in pregnancy or with a pacemaker. Always check with your GP if you have any concerns about your health.

SPECIAL OFFER 10% DISCOUNT on first appointments booked in December at Thame Therapy Clinic

REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY eliminated with Bowen Therapy As this year comes to a close I would like to share a testimonial written by Ellie, a lovely young and talented musician. Ellie works as a music therapist. I have been treating Ellie since May 2014 - we had 3 sessions within a month, since then I have seen her regularly, monthly for a while and now every 6 weeks or so. Ellie reported: I first started seeing Jen after suffering from a particularly bad flare up of repetitive strain injury (RSI) in my left hand and arm. I am a music therapist and also write and perform my own music as well as being in a band, and over the years have developed several problems as a result of the amount of time spent using musical instruments, lifting heavy equipment and driving long distances frequently. This particular flare up resulted in having to immobilise my left arm for one week and was followed by an NHS referral to physiotherapy. My doctor told me that unless I changed something these flare-ups would become a permanent state. Whilst the physiotherapy was useful, I recognised that it was not addressing the long-term implications of my injury and I was left facing a very serious and devastating decision about whether I would have to give up my job and be able to continue with music.

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

I heard about Jen and Bowen though her local advertising in LOOK LOCAL and decided to see if this type of treatment could help me. I cannot explain the relief I felt when I met Jen and we began to work together; I realised that my injury could be treated in a way that would enable me to continue with my job and music; which I have spent my whole life working towards. Jen really listened to me and not only focused on my injury but me as a person. I started to feel relief in my left hand and arm almost immediately, and finally felt like I had some control over my injury rather than it being the other way round. I was able to sustain treatment at home through remedies and instructions from Jen, which helped if I felt things were becoming difficult in-between sessions. Thanks to Jen, I have had almost no RSI flare ups in over a year, and I find that playing instruments, carrying equipment, driving and generally using my arm and hand is not causing me any problems. I have found sustainable, effective and consistent way to cope with my injury and improve my general health. To think that 18 months ago I was coming to terms with the possibility of having to change my career and give up my passion due to RSI and spending a lot of time in pain. This seems really distant now. I have actually increased my workload, and have performed at more festivals and gigs than ever before this summer! Bowen really works for me, and I am so grateful to all the wonderful work Jen has done; she has enabled me to continue living a happy life”. Jen comments: Please contact me if you think there are issues preventing you from leading a fulfilling life; these may be in regard to life style ‘demands’ and may include: physically/mentally demanding work, sports training, pain, chronic health issues, pre and post surgery, trauma, hormone issues, pre and post natal care.

Did you know there’s a place where magic happens, just down the road from you? It’s called The Grange, in Saunderton, and it’s the training centre of the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

You might have seen their signs, peeking

above the hedge as you drive between Princes Risborough and High Wycombe, and wondered what they do, and how they do it. Well, part of the magic is turning playful pups into immensely capable hearing dogs. These clever canines keep deaf children and adults safe, by alerting them to a fire alarm or a burglar alarm. The magic starts when they choose their pups, from Cockapoos, Cocker Spaniels, Labradors and miniature Poodles because their temperaments make great hearing dogs. Then, from eight weeks to a year, the puppies live with volunteer socialisers, who give them new experiences and basic training. Then they come to ‘big school’ at Saunderton, staying with local volunteers at nights and weekends. This is when they are taught ‘soundwork’. For example, when the doorbell rings, they are taught to walk to their trainer, nudge them with their nose, then lead them to the door. This takes treats and time – lots of it. And they do this in classes. It’s

26

dedicated one-to-one training, as you’ll know if you have a pet dog. They then carefully consider the lifestyle of their deaf applicants and match their clever dogs to fit in with them perfectly. This is the other part of the magic. Deafness can be an isolating disability, but hearing dogs help deaf children and adults find independence, confidence and companionship. It is lifechanging. However, the Charity doesn’t receive any government funding to do this. It relies on donations and sponsorships. So, it always has puppies available to sponsor. For example, take Ned,(shown below), today he’s a bold black Labrador pup, with ‘take me home’ eyes. But one day, he’ll become a hearing dog – and you can be part of his journey if you sponsor him. You might even want to sponsor him as a gift for a friend or loved one this Christmas? If so then just visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk. There are nearly 1,000 hearing dog partnerships across the UK. With deafness on the increase, hearing dogs are in great demand. So, next time you spot their signs, remember: it’s where magic happens.
