EDITORIAL EDITOR'S NOTE

to the next level

D

ecember tiptoes into our lives again – and the season that we are all looking forward to is upon us. Even though we expect the celebrations to be toned down this year because of the state of national mourning the kingdom is in, we are sure we can make the best of the holiday season in each our own way. They say that life finds a way – and we believe fun and holidays too. So don’t worry fellow travelers, Thailand—especially at the major tourist spots such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya--is still a great place, indeed still the best place to be, for truly unforgettable holiday fun. Thailand is still the world’s favorite holiday destination and people from all over the world are still coming – we’ve hit the 35-million mark already, reports say --to enjoy the country’s myriad attractions and experience its unique “memorymaking “ power. We understand that the world is riding on the crest of change and while we’re all for preserving continuity, we welcome change with open arms, and we are not leaving any stone unturned in efforts to

take the publication to the next level, content-wise and otherwise. New developments, fresh innovations, and novel ideas that cater to the next digital-savvy generation while respecting the best of the previous generations are being incorporated to the magazine even as we are working on this issue, in a hope to engage our readers even more actively in the days to come. As we prepare to turn a new leaf at the end of this month, Lookeast will be bringing forth young blossoms, in a manner of speaking, that will help the magazine remain as interesting, as vibrant, as significant to the lives of our print and online readers from here and abroad. Watch out for what we are planning to unveil beginning of next year. In the meantime, let us wish you all, “Happy Holidays.” As John Lennon would say, “Let us give love--and peace and goodwill--a chance.” No matter our view of the world today, no matter our race, creed, or color, let us help make this world a better place to live in for all us. WINTER IN CHIANG MAI How, and what, to enjoy at the “Rose of the North” for an utterly relaxing weekend during the winter season

n 1929, the first train puffed into Chiang Mai cutting the travel time to Thailand’s second biggest city from days to hours, and so began the transformation of this ancient Lanna Kingdom settlement. But while the railways have opened it up, it has not forgotten its ancient past. Large parts of the 700-year-old settlement remain protected by the ancient moat and nestled within its reconstructed walls and renovated great gates. This is the heart of present-day Chiang Mai. SEE & DO Dominating the city is Doi Suthep, one of the tallest mountains in Thailand, at its peak of which is one of the country’s most important temples, Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, which overlooks the entire city and its surrounding valley. The pulse of Chiang Mai remains the old walled city, so take some time to follow the ageless footsteps of peoples past and stroll down the old city’s narrow and ancient streets and alleys. Thapae Gate, the most important of the ancient city gates, is a lively place with a small night market. This gate is a good starting point for a walking tour of the inner city. The

best entertainment restaurants is The Riverside (Tel: 053 243-239) set on the side of the Ping River. For a quieter meal, the 100-year-old teak Antique House (Tel: 053 222208) is highly recommended. And of course, Le Crystal should not be missed if you fancy some fine dining. DRINK Nimmanahaeminda Road -- which attracts young and trendy Thai professionals – is major pub hub these days. Chiang Mai Entertainment Center has 30 bars, Thai boxing, and a colorful ladyboy cabaret. And there are all kinds of coffee shops! SLEEP Chiang Mai is well endowed with hotels for every kind of budget. A lively yet laidback city, Chiang Mai offers a refreshing alternative from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, and beckons as a great urban breakaway spot especially this winter.

Thai Elephant Conservation Center on Lamphun Road is famous for its treatment and rehabilitation of injured and traumatized elephants. The Elephant Nature Park is a reserve for abused animals, but has daily shows, elephant treks, and a home-stay program. Chiang Mai’s hills are popular trekking grounds where you can ramble through virgin forests, hill tribe villages and spectacular streams and waterfalls where nature is closeup and personal Or, how about taking your white knuckles for a white water rafting excursion? If water is not for you, then head over to Chiang Mai Sky Adventure to view the city and countryside from a micro-light aircraft. SHOP No trip to Chiang Mai would be complete without a browsing the local markets and shops. Walking streets are a feature of the city too. For serious buyers, try Sankamphaeng or Hang Dong roads. EAT Northern Thai cuisine is deliciously different from those found in the rest of the country but as a tourist town it is not difficult to please the foreign palate here. One of the

HOW TO GET THERE:

Six trains from Hua Lamphong Railway Station leave for Chiang Mai every day. The first Sprinter service departs at 8:30 a.m, and the last sleeper express train leaves at 10 p.m. Call 02 223 7010, 02 204 444 or 1690 to double check time schedule. Several airlines connect Bangkok with Chiang Mai. Frequent flights operate every day, including Nok Air and Thai Orient, which fly from Don Muang (not Suvarnabhumi) Airport. Check their websites for departure times and fares. Buses, which are cheap and comfortable, leave the Morchit Bus Station on a regular basis, to pply the 800km distance or so from Bangkok. The trip takes about eight to nine hours.

THE FINEST FRENCH CUISINE IN CHIANG MAI Enhance your Chiang Mai holiday with unforgettable cuisine at the best French restaurant in the North -- Le Crystal Restaurant. One of the city’s most iconic restaurants, Le Crystal is the place to go for the finest French cuisine, best enjoyed with a selection of world-class wines amid wonderful natural scenery by the Ping River. M

any Thailand visitors have experienced a passionate love affair with Southern Thailand, in part because of its beautiful tropical coastline but also because of its ability to cater to everyone: from hippies and hermits to the rich and the famous. An eclectic catalogue of escapades await in this part of the kingdom: diving with the peaceful manta rays in the Similan Islands, frolicking in Koh Lipe’s gentle surf, relaxing in a hammock in Phang Nga, kicking back in one of Koh Samui’s health resorts, climbing

the karst rock formations in Krabi, or simple beachcombing in Phuket. The South of Thailand never fails in its bid to offer a little bit of something for everyone, and there’s truly nowhere to spend a great getaway – whatever adventure floats your boat.

Southern Specialties

The jungle-clad islands in southern Thailand are commonly made up of postcard-perfect azure blue sea and powder-white sandy beaches, accompanied by a few swaying palm trees to complete the idealistic scenery. Thailand’s tourism industry

is a major economic contributor, with statistics showing that it injected a whopping THB 2.4 trillion to the country’s GDP in 2013 and although the most current official figures are yet to be released for 2016, numbers are likely to have risen. But there’s more to Southern Thailand than just its beaches – although they are breathtaking enough that they will knock the skis off even the most dedicated of winter sports lovers! World-class restaurants stand alongside “lipsmackingly” tasty local eateries, high-end resorts are accompanied by charming-come-rustic lodgings and if you are looking for somewhere to unwind, then check-in to a local spa for a well-earned detoxing break.

Right: From the wellknown tourist magnets such as Phuket and Koh Samui, to the charming betterkept secrets such as Khao Lak and Koh Lipe, southern Thailand certainly is amazing Thailand, and it’s waiting for you!

you can enjoy swimming alongside a whale shark. Why not go all out and forget about the possible embarrassment of proposing on a big screen at a football match or hiding a ring in her favorite dessert and risking a choking incident when you can go under water and do it with the fish? According to Operations Manager Jamie Walsh, diving in the Similans offers one of the “most romantic underwater experiences in the world” and in 2015, two happy bubble blowing couples disembarked off the boat newly engaged.

Nestled between Krabi and Phuket,

If you are to heed advice from the likes of Lonely Planet or TripAdvisor, then you already know that any true beach bunny at heart should head to Koh Lipe. There are three main beaches on the island accompanied by many often-private bays scattered along the small island’s coastline and couples can enjoy catching sunrises, sunsets, do some beachcombing, a spot of snorkeling or take a leisurely dip in the sea.

Anyone from honeymooners to longmarried couples will be spoilt for choice in Phuket, as beach massages, jungle treks and temple tours cater to everyone’s sense of romantic adventure. But there is a simpler way to inject some romance into your Phuket trip by taking a sunset stroll with your loved one at Promthep Cape. Located on the island’s southern-most tip, this peninsula offers awesome views over the ocean and is a popular hotspot due to its natural beauty – so popular in fact that it attracts hundreds of visitors every day armed with cameras to capture the moment. In fact, you may not even need to get out of your resort to enjoy a scintillating sunset. Many resorts and hotels, such as the Banyan Tree Phuket or the Angsana Laguna Phuket, offer great vantage points for that romantic time with your special one during sunset.

a trip to Phang Nga Bay should be thrown into the mix and there are a multitude of tours available in the bay, including cave explorations and sunset cruises. But arguably the most romantic experience here – if you are looking for one -- happens after the sun goes down when the sea begins to sparkle and the phosphorescent plankton glows beneath the water’s surface. Take a kayak out with a tour agency such as Green Andaman Travel (www.greenandamantravel. com/) and marvel with some “ooohhs” and “aaahhs” as the plankton glistens each time your oar breaks the surface. And there’s more. You can hike through old rainforests in Khao Sok National Park, or link hands while jumping off limestone rock faces in Ao Nang. From the well-known tourist magnets such as Phuket and Koh Samui, to the charming better-kept secrets such as Khao Lak and Koh Lipe, southern Thailand certainly is amazing Thailand, and it’s waiting for you!

TRAVEL TIPS How to get to Phuket

By Air – It only takes approximately about one hour or so to fly to Phuket. Several domestic flights operate daily from Bangkok at both regular (and a bit high) price and low-cost fares. For details, contact Thai Airways (02 628-2000, www. thaiairways.com), Bangkok Airways (02 265-5678, 02 265-5555, www.bangkokair. com); Phuket Air (02 679-8999, www. phuketairlines.com), Thai Air Asia (02 515-9999, www.airasia.com), One-TwoGo by Orient Thai (1126, www.onetwo-go. com); and Nok Air (1318, www.nokair. com). Phuket also offer direct flights to international destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Penang, Singapore, Sydney, and many others. By Bus -- Buses (both air-conditioned and non-air) leave daily from Bangkok’s Southern Terminal Station to Phuket. Travel time is approximately from 12 to 14 hours (For more info, call 02 435-1199, 02 435-1200, 02 434-7192, 02 434-55578 or visit www.transport.co.th). Buses, operated by some travel operators, also leave Khao Sarn Road with probably slightly higher fares. By Train -- There are no direct trains commuting down to Phuket. If you’re taking the overnight train from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station, get off at Suratthani, then to take a bus to Phuket. Pre-booking is advised. HOTELS CHECKING IN

ALWAYS FAMILY-FRIENDLY It’s a season for unforgettable family holidays – so why not enjoy a great get-together at the Sheraton Samui Resort? by Percy Roxas

S

All photos from Sheraton Samui

amui -- the name alone conjures images of a paradisiacal destination that is perfect for all kinds of holidaymakers. And especially so the growing number of holidaymakers who are finding that this gem of an island is a great place for unforgettable holidays for the entire family -- especially if they stay at the Sheraton Samui Resort. Sheraton Samui Resort (86 Moo 3 Chaweng Noi Beach//Tel: 077 422 020) of course, caters to all kinds of travelers. If you’re looking for a perfect “relax, recharge, and play holiday” at the beach – whether you are single, couples or family travelers -- the resort is ideal.

22

LOOKEAST | HOTELS

Firstly, the location -- it is very close to Chaweng, one of the best beaches on the island. Chaweng Noi is much quieter and serene than its more famous counterpart Chaweng Yai, so it’s a perfect family retreat. The crowds are fewer, there are less motorized watersports, and there are a few beach vendors to bother you. It is almost like a private beach. With the resort’s amazing setting, on a gently sloping hillside with lush tropical gardens and an abundance of native coconut trees, it’s a place where any family can create wonderful holiday memories. There is so much to explore and enjoy for all, although if you are one for privacy, no worries as well,

because the resort is large enough; it never feels overcrowded. Then, the facilities. You will love the rooms, as they are airy, polished, and feature flat-screens, living areas, and balconies with an assortment of tropical garden and ocena views depending on the location. Wi-Fi is complimentary. Our family’s favorite spot is the swimming pool – and the resort has two. The Garden Pool is just a short walk from the main lobby while the beachfront pool is just footsteps away from the sands, where one can enjoy beautiful views of the Gulf of Siam. Here, guests don’t even have to stand when they get hungry or thirsty as they can order food and drink from the comfort of their sun-loungers (Simply press the call-button and someone will come to take your order and serve it to you). And since we’re on the subject of food already, the entire family will love the breakfast offerings. The buffet breakfast is extensive. A wide variety of dishes will suit the tastes of both parents and kids – and Executive chef Franz Estermann curates a lengthy list of hot and cold buffet items. This friendly chef also likes nothing more than greeting his guests in the morning and discussing

his passion for food. You can enjoy his food at one of the resort’s four restaurants and bars. For family feasts, there are no fewer than three Sheraton dinner buffets to choose from during the week. Mondays, Wednesday’s and Saturdays are perfect to enjoy World Flavors, Asian Culinary Journey, or BBQ (Meat and Seafood). If Dad and Mom want a sundowner before bedtime, they will find the resort’s quirky beachfront bar perfect. Called Blue Monkey, this bar has an enviable location on a raised deck overlooking Chaweng Noi beach, where they can enjoy great cocktails along with stunning seaviews. Besides four restaurants and bars with terraces and poolside service, other facilities include an airy gym, a chic spa, a playground, and a tennis court. What else for the family holidaymakers? Ah, the resort has a Starkid Kid’s Club, dedicated kid’s activity zone, which has a sandy outdoor play area, adventure trail, and a whole host of scheduled activities on hand to keep little ones entertained. There is even an indoor area to help keep the children entertained on rainy days. And because The Kid’s Club is located very close to the beach, parents can sunbathe or enjoy the

beachfront area while the kids are having fun. Indeed, Sheraton Samui is an ideal springboard to the other delights that Samui offers, more than a place to sleep in after an enjoyable exploration of the beautiful island. So, looking for a seamless vacation in Koh Samui with the family? Sheraton Samui is for you. The resort is far enough from the busier parts of the island for those who want alone time to de-stress and relax – but close enough when you need the buzz and activity of Chaweng town center or the ever popular and quaint location of Fisherman’s Village in Bophut, as well as the other attractions. And the Samui airport is only 15 minutes away. Most of all, the service. From the electric buggy driver and the pool attendants, to the bar and restaurant team and the room housekeeping staff, the warm friendliness, the touch of genuine Thai hospitality, is always there. Sheraton Samui Resort knows what family holidays should be all about. It’s for you, it’s for me – it’s for the entire family.

GREAT ROMANTIC HIDEAWAYS Some of the best places for creating great honeymoon memories in the South by Percy Roxas

H

Angsana Laguna Phuket

oneymoon hideaways are Thailand’s specialty, and many of them located in the South. In Phuket, they range from truly high-end resorts such as Phulay Bay Krabi, Naka Island, Banyan Tree Phuket, JW Marriott, Le Meridien, among others, to the similarly luxurious, locally owned properties such as Indigo, sri panwa, Aleenta, and Panwa, to name a few, to intimate boutique properties and budget hotels and guesthouses. Here are a few of the top hideaways in the South that have helped Thailand gain a reputation as a dream destination cut out for honeymoon holidays:

Trisara Phuket

HOTELS CHECKING IN

Banyan Tree Phuket --

from 229 to 604sqm in size. As can be expected, the well-appointed interiors are great – the design and décor reflect traditional Thai ambience but embraced by a modern aesthetic. Furnishings are lavish, and the overall atmosphere is that of easy luxury, making it perfect for honeymooning couples looking to create wonderful memories.

Located on the island’s northwest less than a half hour's drive from Phuket International airport, Banyan Tree Phuket is a glorious spread of elegant Thai architecture complemented with every modern amenity imaginable. Cradled within Laguna Phuket's exclusive community, a 400-hectare former abandoned tin-mining site that includes 3km of sandy shores tilted on the great Andaman, it is home to more than 30 restaurants and bars and offers free use of interresort transportation by shuttle vehicle or lagoon boat. The resort’s exclusive location is perfect for private, intimate moments, although there are a lot of activities to do for those looking for some active honeymoon holidays.

Conrad Koh Samui --

Conrad is a resort where you enjoy the luxury of being yourself, to borrow their slogan. The resort offers pool villas that look out to the Gulf of Thailand. Stay at their Ocean View Pool Villa and discover how the best of life’s luxuries can be fitted in just 96sqm of living space and a 10m-private infinity plunge pool. A romantic hideaway indeed. Floor-to-ceiling windows, tropical hardwood flooring, and sensuous Thai silk furnishings add to the delight of this pool villa.

Trisara Phuket –

An awardwinning property with 39 suites and pool villas that have become one of the world’s favorite romantic getaways, Trisara Phuket is a dream resort indeed. The setting is romantic, conducive to whispering sweet nothings, and spending alone time with your special one. Guests in all villas – in fact all rooms and suites – benefit from the lovely private pools and breathtaking oceanviews, not to mention the wonderful guest service.

Phulay Bay Krabi -- This Ritz

Carlton Reserve, the first such brand in fact, is the very epitome of a truly romantic accommodation. If romance is escape, then this resort is your passport to another world almost too good to be true. With designer pool villas set within a spellbinding landscape that become more romantic as you stay longer. Just the view of the outlying islands across from the infinity pool of your villa spells pure romance.

Dusit Thani Krabi -- About 30 minutes from Krabi Airport, this resort boasts 246-luxury

accommodation in finely executed Thai design, amid a surrounding of spacious tropical gardens facing white sandy beachfront on the 1.8km Klong Muang Beach. It is another top favorite of wedding planners and honeymooners. The breath-taking view of the Andaman Sea and the fresh sea breeze are prime bonuses to a resort that tries to exceed expectations at all times.

Sofitel Phokeethra –-

Surrounded by a pristine rainforest is a luxury resort located just a short distance from Ao Nang and featuring 276 rooms, most with a large balcony facing the ocean and providing views of the limestone islands and stunning sunsets over the Andaman Sea. Sofitel Phokeethra Krabi, with its prime setting on Klong Muang Beach, is ideal for glitzy honeymoons and glamorous weddings. The hotel's elegant colonial and spacious design combines Western luxury with an authentic Thai feel.

The resort also boasts a 103sqmmeeting space, two resort pools, four restaurants and bars, StarKid Kids Club, fitness center, Glow Spa, a tennis court, and meeting and business services.

500m-long beachfront with stunning views of Krabi's verdant limestone formations, and an extensive expanse of beautiful pristine white sands lapped by crystal clear waters. The resort is ideal for couples and families alike with an extensive range of room types, facilities, and services.

Soneva Kiri Koh Kood--

Luxury pool villas have certainly invaded the small Thai island paradises, and Soneva Kiri Koh Kood’s are considered as among the best of the best in the country. The collection includes the Private Cliff Villa Suite with its private 172sqm half-moon pool overlooking a seaview that really enthrals. If luxury pool villas are desired for because they prove a feeling of total intimacy and exclusivity – it’s hard to beat this one! Of course there are other resorts around the kingdom that can make your romantic rendezvous in Thailand nothing less than unforgettable. In Samui, for example, others worth mentioning include resorts such as Vana Belle, Tongsai Bay, Four Seasons Samui, Anantara Samui, W Samui, The Library, Le Meridien Samui, InterCon Samui, Nikki Beach Samui – the list is long! In Krabi, we must also mention Amari Vogue, Nakamanda, Mercure Krabi, Centara Shara Dhevi Krabi, Holiday Inn Krabi, and many others that can easily fulfil requirements for a fantastic romantic holiday, although in a lower room rate scale. And we haven’t even mentioned those in Koh Lanta, Khao Lak, or Koh Phi Phi yet!

Of course there are other resorts around the kingdom that can make your romantic rendezvous something something to cherish for a long time.

MILANESE TOUCH How a few small touches make Hilton Milan, set in a shopping area next to Duomo Museum, Arena Civica, and Brera, stand out from other Hilton hotels and properties

All photos from Hilton MiIan

t’s amazing how some small touches can make a difference. At our recent visit at the Hilton Milan Hotel, for example, we found a few small touches that made the hotel stand out more than other Hilton hotels. Set in a shopping area next to Duomo Museum, Arena Civica, and Brera, tourists to the city of Milan will find its location convenient. The hotel is a mere 3-minute walk from the metro station and 3.7 km from Santa Maria delle Grazie, which houses Leonardo da Vinci's “The Last Supper.”

26

LOOKEAST | HOTELS

Hilton MiIan (Via Luigi Galvani, 12, 20124 Milano, Italy; Tel: +39 02 69831) is also just a 30-minutes’ walk to the city center, and thus offers quick access to restaurants and other entertainment places. But there’s more to the hotel than convenient location. The minimalist architecture for one, lends it an air of elegance that especially appeal to those looking to experience the Old World charm. Boosted by its proximity to opera houses, museums, and monuments, the hotel offers a taste of Old Europe as we expect it to be indeed. Despite having been in existence since the late 60s – it opened in 1968 – the hotel is still quite elegant and sophisticated. All the 319 rooms are designed with bright décor featuring wooden floor along with modern dark furnishings, and the marble

bathrooms are still as sparkling as ever. There are some aspects that some travelers might find dated, but they do not jar the hotel experience at all. The upscale rooms come with Wi-Fi (although for a fee), flat-screen TVs and desks as expected; and the suites feature separate living rooms. Upgraded suites add balconies and access to a private lounge with free breakfast and refreshments. The buffet breakfast is yet another touch that many guests appreciate. A real morning feast. Served in the large dining room, Hilton Milan’s breakfast aims to please people from different cultures and they do succeed in that. We also found the lounge restaurant relaxing and great for enjoying Mediterranean fare. The spacious and bright Cosmopolitan

Lobby bar, which serves a wide range of tea and coffee, is ideal for chill-out moments, especially after a day of city tour. Suffice it to say that the hotel has a facility for the service and comforts expected by all Milan visitors – and for fitness conscious guests, not to worry as there’s a gym and fitness center to make sure they don’t miss a day of their regimen. And those coming with family, especially with young kids – will be pleased to know that the hotel is “cribs-friendly” and even has a mini club. Hilton Milan is pet-friendly too. Pets are welcome -- for a fee. Given its good location and the very reasonable room rate, Hilton Milan Hotel is highly recommended for all Milan visitors. We are planning to come back here soon ourselves!

Good location, very reasonable room rates -- Hilton Milan reeks with that innate vibrant Italian spirit.

New age of flashpacking

Bangkok -- Southeast Asia's booming tourism trade has experienced a new twist with a rising segment of second-generation upmarket hostels now attracting a wider demographic. With a market size of over 1,200 properties and nearly 52,000 beds, the new and improved product is turning the heads of traditional hotels. According to a report on Hotel Market Trends in Southeast Asia by leading hospitality consulting group C9 Hotelworks, there was an explosive 42% surge in new beds coming online in the 'flashpacker' category between 2015 and the third quarter of this year. Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam are the top three players in the region, with Indonesia narrowing the margin with year-on-year growth of 73%. Speaking about this evolving new accommodation space, C9's managing director, Bill Barnett, said: "Hostels are unlike hotels as average rates are calculated on a per bed basis, compared to hotels which use a per room rate."

TRAVEL ACTIVITIES

THINGS TO DO IN KHAO YAI Dave Stamboulis

A bucket list of "must-dos" to ensure a more fun, exciting, and memorable family holidays in Thailand's fascinating wine region by Percy Roxas Above: The generally allyear-round chilly weather at Khao Yai National Park create shrouds of mists in the surroundings. Below: Wildlife lovers will enjoy sights like this barking deer at Khao Yai National Park.

esides one of the oldest and best-known nature sanctuaries in Thailand -- an Asean and UNESCO World Heritage Site even – there is so much to do and enjoy in Khao Yai: the cool weather, the diverse flora and the fauna, the variety of eco-tourism attractions, the vineyards – and more recently, new programs and activities for all kinds of holidaymakers. Here is a sample bucket list:

1 EXPLORE

THE NATIONAL PARK

Dave Stamboulis

Khao Yai National Park is home to a diverse range of fauna and flora but many travelers come here for some eco-adventure activities. There are more than 50km of hiking trails – some take juts one-hour to do, others

take three days. For animal watchers, the observation towers at Nong Pak Chee or Mo Sing offer an opportunity to see Great Hornbills, gaur, and sometimes elephants (in the early morning). You can also enjoy "wildlife spotting" – an evening activity -available via pick-up trucks in the early evening. For a better feel of the national park, try camping overnight. There are camping zones in the area and you can bring your own tent or rent one. Lodges and cabins are available for singles and groups.

2 VISIT THE VINEYARDS

The wine regions of Khai Yai are worth a visit not only because of the grapes and wine but also for the scenery and special offering at each vineyard. The wine region has four major vineyards, namely: PB Valley, GranMonte, and Alcidini to the west and Village Farm to the east -- all set amid beautiful and varied landscapes. The wine harvest season, which runs from November to March every year, enhances the region’s peaceful aura, environmentally friendly atmosphere, not to mention its beautiful scenery and temperate climate. The wineries have their own on-site accommodation (with restaurants and other services and facilities) and offer activities and tours – wine tours are becoming popular – for a different, enjoyable holiday experience. All the

vineyards now offer professionally conducted, tailor-made, wine tours, which can include – depending on the winery organizing them – private wine tasting, wine and fine dining pairing, vineyards and winery visits and strolls, cellar-door shopping, wine classes, and in some, even wine spa and Thai massage.

3 ENJOY

WORLD-CLASS FEAST

Wine and fine dining is intrinsic part of the Khao Yai experience these days. The vineyards have of course led the way to raising the level of gourmet quality here but today, new developments suggests that dining sophistication in this otherwise tourism backwaters continues to be on the climb up. PB Valley has two restaurants offering scenic views, and Western and Thai specialties partly matched to the wines grown in the estate. The 200-seater Great Hornbill Grill Restaurant with over 100 menus of authentic and fusion style international cuisine together with famous exotic Thai dishes in their unique style. GranMonte’s VinCotto Restaurant, located in the most scenic part of the estate, specializes in home-style cooking. Village Farm has two restaurants that epitomize country living at its best. But there are also a number of standalone places to wine and dine, most

notably in Pak Chong, where trendy restaurants have been mushrooming lately because of increasing demand – and some of them are becoming destinations by themselves too.

4 EAT AT THE TANI

As the sun sets over Khao Yai’s jungleclad hills, this Japanese restaurant at Kirimaya Resort becomes a spectacular setting where you can awaken your taste buds, either from an open fire grill (Yakiniku) or a flat iron grill (Teppanyaki). Perfectly reflecting the purity of atta’s stunning natural landscape, Tani Restaurant (www.kirimaya.com/resorts/atta/ dining/tani-restaurant/) serves only the freshest produce. The restaurant is cleverly positioned with a panoramic view of the Khao Yai mountain range.

5 STAY AT MIRASIERRA

The Khao Yai hotel scene is booming – and many new developments are rising to please all kinds of tourist preferences and budgets. One that is making a big buzz is Mirasierra Khao Yai (www.mirasierrakhaoyai. com), a new boutique bed and breakfast property with only nine

An OB-Gyn practitioner from Bangkok, Dr. Nopadol Sarapala, is passionate about horses and decided to share his passion to the public, especially to Thai families looking for a weekend alternative to urban living. He opened Farm Mor Por (“Mor” is Thai for doctor, and Por is his nickname), which he describes as “a real working horse farm with a difference.” The farm (www. farmmorpor.com) is home to at least 10 horse breeds, which includes Andalusia and Friesian horses, giving guests a rare opportunity to ride otherwise rare – there are only a handful of these in Thailand -- and expensive horses. There are other activities available of course.

7 STOP BY THE PALIO

Palio Khao Yai is a shopping center on the way to the Khao Yai National Park. The Italian style mall has more than 100 stores and restaurants built to recreate a Tuscan feel. Opened in early 2010, Palio Khao Yai is often visited by many Bangkokians who go to Khao Yai for a weekend getaway. While those used to shopping in Bangkok might not really go there to splurge, the place is great for a good meal or drink before or after your exploration of the national park (Address: 17, Mu Si, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima; Tel: 044 365 888).

8 TOUR CHOCKCHAI

Many Khao Yai visitors probably have been here before but Chokchai Farm keeps on adding new tour programs to make sure repeat visitors do not get bored when they return. For example, Agro Tour.
Each tour can accommodate up to 75 visitors only so make sure you book in advance. Tours are arranged with adequate supervision and instruction from a tour guide, for visitors. For more information and booking, contact www.farmchokchai.com.

PAKCHONG MARKET

Night markets are essential fun holiday experiences in Thailand. Pakchong Market boasts a great selection of local food, which you can eat on site or take back to you hotel – and they are cost-effective too.

TRAVEL TIPS HOW TO GET THERE From Bangkok, drive north on Phahonyhotin Road and then take the elevated expressway passing Don Muang Airport. Before Ayutthaya, head northeast in the direction of Saraburi, then continue on the Mittraphap Expressway leading to Nakhon Ratchasima up to Pak Chong, about 45km from Saraburi. From Pak Chong, the national park is at the end of Thanarad Road, south of Pak Chong. The park entrance is about 20km from the expressway exit, and the park headquarters are located about 10km south from the park entrance. The fee to the national park is THB 400 for foreigners (THB 200 for children), and THB 40 for Thais or Thai residents, plus THB 50. TRAVEL OUTBOUND

RIVER THAT TIME FORGOT Until a few years ago, before the Chinese-backed hydroelectric dam projects started affecting its water levels, floating down the Nam Ou on a slow boat and disembarking in Luang Prabang was one of Laos’ most enchanting travel experiences by Marco Ferrarese

Top, Right: A view of the Nam Ou River from above.

A

ll it took to shatter my daydreaming was one simple wave. It twirled over itself, breaking against the side of our boat, and splashing one cold reality-check all over my face and chest. “Aaargh…” I screamed, turning around to face the group of girls seated silently at the back of the boat, and wishing to receive any form of sympathy for my drenched self. Only one of the girls glanced back at me; she kept a composed expression until she couldn’t help it anymore, and started laughing at my dripping face. There’s no sympathy from those who are still dry and clean. But I had gotten what I was dreaming of: after so much glancing at the river’s play, I had been blessed by the Nam Ou’s cold kiss. The Nam Ou River is Laos’ second water artery after the Mekong. It starts close to the Chinese border

to the north, drains all of Phongsali province, and flows down through the west part of Luang Prabang province. It finally joins the Mekong right above its UNESCO World Heritage-listed main city. Until a few years ago, before the Chinese-backed hydroelectric dam projects started affecting its water levels, floating down the Nam Ou on a slow boat and disembarking in Luang Prabang was one of Laos’ most enchanting travel experiences. But today, the final stretch of Nam Ou connecting the village of Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang is too low to be navigable. To enjoy a slow cruise down the river, soaking Laos’ quaint river life, floating past karst rock pinnacles and small fishing villages, travelers have to stick to the less visited section between the villages of Muang Khua and Nong Khiaw. I arrived in Muang Khua hopping

across the nearby Northwestern Vietnamese border near Dien Bien Phu. This dusty one horse town doesn’t give more than an average first impression. The main street, filled with sellers peddling their Chinese-imported plastic and aluminum goods, has an atmosphere that’s like a seesaw between Laos’ renowned blissful quiet, and North Vietnam’s noisy hustle. There had to be something more, and I had an idea where to find it. “Continue down this path and you’ll find the river,” an old man told me as I took a downward fork in the road, and soon enough found myself on a rocky stretch of beach where the boats that have made the trip to Nong Khiaw on that day had just returned. They shook gently over the water as local children played along the quaint shore, giggling excitedly. A man was standing next to his motorbike, knee-deep in the river,

All photos by Marco Ferrarese

carefully dousing it with scoops of fresh water. This was the river bend where, the next day, I should start my boat ride south to Nong Khiaw. At 9 a.m. the next morning, a group of other tourists and I were ready before the floating boats. The man who I had seen washing his bike the day before came towards us: he was our boatman. We piled in, one after the other, and he revved up the engine, leaving Muang Khua behind. On that morning, the Nam Ou was as placid as a coffee-colored ribbon lain between two rows of green hills. We kept silent, not much because of the sputtering sounds of the engine, but rather because the scenery at the sides was a mesmerizing alternation of soaring limestone peaks shrouded in viridian jungle, with bushes hung from their sheer faces in ways that defied all laws of physics. And the more we got away from Muang Khua, the more the river flowed faster, and

our boatman struggled to negotiate the waters. When the engine sputtered and switched off not one, but twice, we all realized that it was time to have a break. Boats on this route usually make a pit-stop at Muang Ngoi: this idyllic riverside community had limited electricity and no road access until 2013, but in recent years, thanks to travelers’ word of mouth, has quickened its pulse. For in as much as Muang Goi had a fantastic backdrop of green hills and stunning river views, I wanted to stay well put on the water. The boatman revved the engine once again, and I continued with a few others along the final stretch to Nong Khiaw – another slightly bigger village that sits gracefully below soaring hilltops and next to the river bend. That’s where, these days, all journeys on the Nam Ou come to an end, and travelers must continue by road to Luang Prabang.

During my last hour on the river, the sun created shimmering snakes of light whenever our boat cut through the mounting waves. When we finally came to a halt against the boats moored along Nong Khiaw’s jetty, and were asked to get off, I thought the sun had shone brighter on the waters. Maybe that was its way of saying that the highlight of my trip had just come to an end.

Clockwise: These photos show how the river is a lifeline for the local people and is integral to their daily life.

TRAVEL TIPS

The Nam Ou starts on the border with China, draining all of Phongsaly province and flowsing down through western Luang Prabang to meet the Mekong above the province. No less than eight major tributaries join Nam Ou before entering Luang Prabang province and beginning its final run down to the Mekong, two of which Nam Khang and the Nam Houn, pass within the huge Phou Den Din NBCA along the Vietnam border. Phongsaly, the on the upper Nam Ou, is the provincial capital.

CRYING THAIGER

The Place: The team behind Daniel Thaiger, Bangkok's popular burger truck, has launched a new hip restaurant: Crying Thaiger. Named after the Isan-style grilled beefsteak, it’s located on a little alley in Sukhumvit 51, in an area formerly occupied by Opposite Mess Hall. The restaurant is on the second floor, and features a stylish and bold mix of industrial meets rustic style with wooden seating and a long bar in front of the open kitchen. The logo of this new restaurant looks like Daniel Thaiger wearing a superhero mask, which adds to the fun, lively atmosphere.

The Food: Crying Thaiger offers the highest quality of ingredients and freshest organic veggies from local farms. The menu spans simple dishes such as “All Hail Caesar's Salad” (THB 190) and “Burrata Cheese Rocket Salad” (THB300). “Larb Feta Fries” (THB195) is irresistible, so try it too. Menu highlights include “Guacamole Cow Burger “ (THB390), and we love the “Crying Pork Chop” (THB420), which is truly an explosion of flavors. Leave room for a dessert, and try 'Thaiger's Berries' (THB140), to crown your meal. A small note to the serious beef lovers: Their signature “Crying Tomahawk” is available only if preordered one day in advance. Why go: Tasty, creative dishes, but also for the friendly, communal vibe, which makes this place well worth repeat visits. In addition, they really

WINE&DINE DINING DESTINATIONS

VENUES TO With new chefs, new menus and new F&B concepts and ideas, Venues is the city’s newest dining destination in a hotel by Percy Roxas

Below: Mouthwatering meat dishes -melt-inteh-mouth tender -- awaits you at Attico.

ATTICO

angkok’s restaurant scene never ceases to amaze. Not only are more and more restaurants appearing on the scene but also, more and more new players are taking the city’s gourmet level to new heights. With competition getting tougher than ever, existing operations need to be more innovative, more imaginative,

and more aggressive in positioning their properties to keep attracting an ever-getting-to-be sophisticated group of foodies. Thus, we are seeing new dining destinations being re-tweaked, re-designed, and re-launched. One dining destination that has recently decided to re-invent itself is Venues, as the group of restaurants at Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok is now called. Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok (489 Sukhumvit Road Tel: 02 302 3333; www.radisson. com/plazahotel-bangkok) has always been proud of its F&B outlets, although spreading the word out about how good they are has always been a challenge. With Venues, the hotel hopes to change that. “What we did here was basically re-launch our restaurants to help give them a new life,” says Thomas Smith, the hotel’s executive chef. New chefs were hired, new F&B concepts ideas were implemented, all menus in all the restaurants were changed, and at least one new outlet was born, Brewski, at the hotel’s rooftop.

ATTICO

Attico, of course, needs no introduction. Since its opening in 2014, the Tuscan-inspired restaurant has become a firm favorite of many and has even garnered top Bangkok restaurant awards. Cozy and rustic, yet urbane and sophisticated, Attico never fails to elicit praise from those who make a visit. Located on the 28th floor of the hotel, Attico is perhaps the only restaurant of its kind with such dramatic high ceiling. Indeed its design metrics, from the oak barrelfilled entrance to the glass windows that offer spectacular city views, all at once suggest what we expect from a fine dining Italian restaurant -- and it’s very high indeed. And yet, the emphasis is on family-style meals, flavors that are ideal for sharing. Attico features menus that changed with the season, and with new Italian chef Roberto Parenteda on board, the highly regarded restaurants sets a new bar indeed.

CHINA TABLE

CHINA TABLE

Don’t let the name fool you – this is not your traditional Chinese restaurant. China Table, perched on the 3rd level of Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok is chic and modern, and even with a range of traditional Chinese elements present at the airy, well-ventilated restaurant. The stylish Radisson Blu touch is unmistakable even here. Of course, the lively, downtown brasserie serves a divine range of dim sums, a tantalizing menu of signature dishes, and an exclusive selection of Chinese herbal teas. But with Hong Kong Chef Bruce Hui, now onboard, the dim sum brunch at the restaurant – dubbed as “the best in the city” by

many – ups the ante a bit more, both in flavors and presentation. Try some of them and you will agree with us wholeheartedly. There is a full list of Chinese delights, each dish meticulously made by hand and steamed on order to succulent perfection. Unique tastes on offer include the fresh mixed vegetable and shrimp with roasted sesame salad dressing in ice bowl and homemade okra cuttlefish ball served with satay sauce. Enhancing their appeal are the interesting presentations, the first one for example, was served Japanese-style and then there’s one dish (a salapao in fact) served like real mushrooms. But worry not if you are after the traditional dishes. Chef Bruce makes sure you will still enjoy Peking duck -- glazed roast, juicy, and with crispy skin – using his own secret recipe and carved at your table. Oh, and there’s a unique fusion of Chinese and Indian dishes based on Hakka cuisine prepared in parts of Hong Kong an Taiwan. Other F&B outlets at the Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok also received a deliberate reboost and the new craft beer bar, Brewski, which has just opened as of this writing, should further strengthen Radisson Blu Plaza Bangkok’s reputation as a foodie magnet non-pareil. Forget the Sukhumvit traffic, and the rather not-so-easy way to get to the hotel. Venues – all the six restaurants and bars it encompasses, are definitely all worth the effort!

This Page: China Table's warm, relaxing dining area is complement by the delicious and appetizing new dishes prepared by Hong Kong chef Bruce Hui.

PERCY ROXAS

Homemade pasta, gnocchi, premium antipasto, and prime imported meat and seafood are Attico trademarks. The restaurant is likewise noted for its tempting displays of cured meats, artisanal cheeses, signature home-cooked breads, and a cellar that holds extensive selection of Italian vintages, including rare Tuscan wines as well numerous Old and New World varieties. Once notices a “back-to-basics” approach, without prejudice to good flavors, obviously a result of what Chef Roberto – who has worked with Zanotti and Limoncello, besides his experience in Europe – brings to Attico. Attico is an Italian translation of the word “Loft,” and guests can indeed expect “a lofty experience” here when they make a visit and enjoy it!
