Highlights from Our Gardens Tree Succession Planning (1) One of our most interesting stories is the history of our grand trees. The trees of Peirce’s Woods, Oak and Conifer Knoll, and the forest edge are some of the oldest and most precious specimens. To help preserve our legacy trees, our staff has developed a Tree Succession Plan to identify the historically, scientifically, and aesthetically significant trees in need of preservation. The Tree Succession Plan identifies trees at risk of decline and takes preventative measures to ensure replacements are on hand. Often, these replacement trees are purchased and grown at our nursery until needed. To preserve the heritage of our specimen trees, we also attempt to propagate the tree to create a genetic match. Within the past two years, we removed 282 trees and planted more than 900. The Tree Succession Plan also helps us to improve our documentation, allowing us to preserve our history, while continuing our legacy of tree preservation. Sustaining Our Natural and Perimeter Lands (2) Our horticulture experts know the potential of plants to be both beautiful and functional. Our Natural Lands team uses the best practices in land management to sustain our perimeter lands. One example is the management of storm water runoff. After a heavy rainfall, large volumes of water can rush through land and into nearby streams causing flooding and erosion while simultaneously destroying the habitats within. To prevent this issue and reduce as much damage to our streams and wetlands as possible, one practice we utilize is a rain garden. This flat depression of land collects water and slowly absorbs it into the ground.

Introducing deep-rooted plants, such as native trees, shrubs, and warm-season grasses, not only helps water infiltration, but will also help improve the quality of the soil and help oxidize pollutants in the water. In total, within the more than 700 acres that surround the gardens proper, we have four rain gardens and five stormwater controls to assist with flood mitigation. As a result, the water flows to streams slowly and with less contaminants, improving the health of our streams, wetlands, woodlands, and the ecosystems within. A Taste of Longwood (3) This summer, we debut two exciting partnerships that will excite your tastebuds! Éclat Chocolate of West Chester, PA, will release a new chocolate bar made from Moroccan mint grown in our Gardens. This handcrafted chocolate will delight the palate with its crisp and pure flavors. The bar will be available for purchase in The GardenShop starting July 1. Victory Brewing Company of Downingtown, PA, will create two signature brews using ingredients grown in our Gardens. Starting in July, you can enjoy Longwood Seasons: Summer Zest, a Saison beer with the fragrant aroma of zest from lemons grown here. In September, you’ll be able to enjoy Longwood Seasons: Autumn Harvest, a wheat ale featuring floral favors from Longwood-harvested honey. All brews will be available in our new Beer Garden.

The Art & Artist of Nightscape Experience a new kind of beauty as you immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and spectacle of our Gardens after dark during Nightscape: A Light and Sound Experience by Klip Collective. Klip Collective, founded by photographer Pier Nicola D'Amico and video artist Ricardo Rivera in 2003, is a visual art shop bridging projection lighting, technology and storytelling. In a short ten years, the Philadelphia-based firm has gone from being a purely artistic endeavor to an experiential partner sought out by many of the world’s most respected agencies and cultural institutions. Klip Collective has had installations at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Center for Contemporary Art in Moscow, and Sundance Film Festival’s New

Frontier in 2007, 2013 and 2014. For Creative Director Ricardo Rivera, this suite of installations has been directly inspired by the breathtaking beauty of Longwood Gardens.“I’m interpreting the space through movement, color, light and sound,” says Rivera.“I’m feeding off of what's there, and illuminating it with our imaginations, if you will, in a playful, colorful manner.” Rivera describes the artistic process of creating Nightscape as painting with light.“We’re using cutting-edge video projection devices, and we’re using them in unconventional ways to light the Gardens. We take this very articulated light made up of pixels and once they pass through a projector they’re aimed at an area. We can then fully manipulate those pixels digitally to correspond with what it’s projecting upon, such as a tree or a topiary,” says Rivera. Designed as a journey, guests are invited to linger and interact with the exhibit. A specially designed smartphone app is available for download when Nightscape debuts in July that will enhance your experience. Learn even more at longwoodgardens.org/ nightscape.

Lost In The Meadow Presented by Longwood Gardens in Partnership with People’s Light September 9–12 and 16–19, 6:30 pm Join us for the first theater performance presented in our Meadow Garden. Created by the award-winning PearlDamour and Mimi Lien, Lost in the Meadow follows an eclectic group of pilgrims as they make their way through the expanse of the Meadow Garden, each looking for a place where they belong. Headphones allow the audience to hear the travelers’ conversations, even though they are hundreds of feet away. In another part of the Meadow Garden, workers are building something: a giant tower, crowned with a mysterious megaphone. What message will this tower broadcast? Can it help these pilgrims find their way? Filled with humor, spectacle, and music, Lost in the Meadow explores the quest of the tiny human being to understand the big picture.
