2013–2014 Performance Series Our founder Pierre S. du Pont believed in the idea of The Garden as Theatre—and we continue this vision today by presenting spectacular jazz, organ, classical, and world music performances.

This year we’re introducing 12 new artists to Longwood and welcoming back the 2013 Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition winner for his debut concert on The Longwood Organ.

As we look ahead, a shining summer awaits. Join us as we open our new Meadow Garden and celebrate a century of performances when our Open Air Theatre turns 100.

Organ Series

One of the world’s most celebrated pianists, André Watts burst upon the music scene at the age of 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic in their Young People’s Concerts. More than 45 years later, he remains one of today’s most beloved superstars and in 2011 received the National Medal of Arts. His program will include J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major, Beethoven’s Sonata in D Major, Op. 10, No. 3 and works by Mozart and Liszt.

Experience the sounds of gypsy jazz with South Philadelphia’s Beau Django.

Featuring guitar virtuoso Andre Riege, mandolin prodigy Bryce Milano, and founder Jon Dichter, the band plays an extensive repertoire of Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli, and The Hot Club of France.

Heralded young jazz singer Cécile McLorin Salvant is on the cusp of American stardom.

In 2010 she won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition and this year released her first album, WomanChild. “McLorin Salvant has it all.

The Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass Honoring the 200th Anniversary of Wagner & Verdi’s births Tuesday, October 29 8 pm

Ahreum Han Sunday, November 10 1 pm

The Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass is composed of America’s top brass musicians dedicated to bringing the joyous experience of great music to a wide range of audiences.

A veritable “dream team” of virtuoso brass players, members of the group have performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Canadian Brass. The program will include The Ride of the Valkyries, music from Wagner’s Ring Cycle, and Verdi’s Aida and La Traviata.

Ahreum is the Principal Organist, Assistant Director of Music, and Artist-inResidence at First Presbyterian Church in Davenport, Iowa.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Saturday, November 23 8 pm The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is a group of all-singing, all-strumming Ukulele players, using instruments bought with loose change, which believes that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation, as long as they are played on the Ukulele. A performance by this orchestra is funny, virtuosic, twanging, foot-stomping, and melodious light entertainment featuring only the “bonsai guitar” and a menagerie of voices.

Going from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via Otis Redding and Spaghetti Western soundtracks, the Orchestra takes us on “a world tour with only hand luggage.”

Peter Richard Conte is Principal Organist of The Longwood Organ and Grand Court Organist of the world famous Wanamaker Organ at the Macy’s department store in Philadelphia. His program will include his own transcriptions for organ of Verdi’s Overture to, ‘La Forza del Destino’, Wagner’s Siegfried’s Funeral March, and Immolation Scene from Götterdämmerung.

Mark O’Connor’s Appalachian Christmas Wednesday, December 4 8 pm In this holiday concert, the Grammywinning fiddler shares songs from the hills and hollows of Appalachia. Growing up in the O’Connor musical household, Christmas time was a wondrous mixture of Christmas carols and traditional American music—and that is the spirit of Mark O’Connor’s critically acclaimed album An Appalachian Christmas.

Making Spirits Bright Christmas with Ann Hampton Callaway Thursday, December 5 8 pm Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the finest singer-songwriters of our time. She dazzles music lovers as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, and educator. She is best known for starring in the Broadway musical Swing and wrote and sang the theme song for the hit TV series The Nanny.

Founded in 1995, the Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic style—a style that is strongly rhythmic, melodic, and filled with dynamic contrast. This trio has an entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. It’s truly organic. Joining pianist Roberts are bassist Rodney Jordan and the uniquely talented Jason Marsalis on drums. “We call him the ‘genius of the modern piano,’ because he is.” —Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Isabelle Demers is Organ Professor and Head of the Organ Program at Baylor University in Texas. A native of Québec, she is rapidly becoming recognized as one of North America’s most virtuosic organists. Her concert at the 2010 National Convention of the American Guild of Organists, in Washington, D.C., was received with great acclaim not only by critics, who deemed it “one of the most outstanding events of the convention” (The American Organist), but also by the standing-room-only audience, which called her back five times.

Classical Series

Venice Baroque Orchestra Thursday, February 20 8 pm Founded in 1997 by Baroque scholar and harpsichordist Andrea Marcon, Venice Baroque Orchestra is one of the premier ensembles devoted to period instrument performance. The orchestra has received wide critical acclaim for its concert and opera performances throughout the world.

The program will include Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

One of the most highly regarded and sought-after Irish-American groups in Celtic music, the all-female collective Cherish the Ladies formed in the early ‘90s. The group’s heady blend of stellar musicianship, breathtaking singing, and lively step dancing won them fans all over the world.

2014 Philadelphia Flamenco Festival Saturday, March 1 1 & 4 pm Cómplices, choreographed by world renowned Flamenco artist Rosario Toledo, kicks off the 2014 Philadelphia Flamenco Festival. This original work, danced by Philly’s own Pasión y Arte, includes live musical accompaniment for a fully immersive experience, twice in one day.

Max Raabe & Palast Orchester Thursday, March 6 8 pm Slick and nostalgic, yet unmistakably modern, Germany’s Max Raabe & Palast Orchester debut at Longwood Gardens.

The ever-elegant, debonair Raabe and his 12-piece orchestra embody the halcyon days of 1920s and 30s Weimar Berlin in all its high style and musical glory. It’s all there—dance hall songs, couplets, Cuban rumbas, happy foxtrots, and stylish tangos, as Raabe in his perfect tux captures the essence of the cabaret singer, the bel canto hero, the falsetto of ragtime, and the timbre of early pre-war jazz. The Broadway musical Cabaret was just an invention—this show is history!

Organist Brian Jones is Emeritus Director of Music and Organist at Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston (1984–2004).

Legendary classical guitarists Sérgio and Odair Assad—known as the Assad Brothers—are joined by their sisters and are performing as a quintet. This Brazilianborn family is known for their guitar innovation, ingenuity, and expression.

The band presents a concert that blends classical music with their Brazilian heritage.

Van Cliburn Gold Medalist: Vadym Kholodenko Tuesday, March 18 8 pm Winner of the coveted gold medal at the Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Vadym Kholodenko captured the attention of jury, audience, and critics alike for “mesmerizing and exhilarating” performances that brought the crowd to their feet,“[cheering] him like a rock star” (Cincinnati Enquirer). Born in Kiev, Vadym Kholodenko made his first appearances in the United States, China, Hungary, and Croatia at the age of 13.

Anonymous 4 Grace and Glory Thursday, April 3 8 pm Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, the four women of Anonymous 4 combine historical scholarship with contemporary performance intuition. Anonymous 4 travels from old world to new: the first half of this program contains motets & chansons from 13th-century France, and the second half is a collection of American traditional hymns and songs.

This Grammy Award winning vocal group is celebrating 25 years in music. The New York Voices are known for their closeknit voicings, inspired arrangements, and unparalleled vocal blend. Their interests are rooted in jazz, but often Brazilian, R&B, classical, and pop influences are infused with equal creativity and authenticity.

Benjamin Sheen Friday, May 2 8 pm In June 2013, Benjamin Sheen, 23, was crowned the winner of the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition receiving the Pierre S. du Pont First Prize of $40,000 and a contract with Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists. Sheen is a Juilliard School masters graduate studying with Paul Jacobs, a graduate of Oxford University with a first-class honors degree in music, and is increasingly gaining recognition as an international concert organist. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Organists and a recipient of the prestigious Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Medal for 2011.

Open Air Theatre 100th Anniversary Celebration Summer 2014

This June our Open Air Theatre celebrates a century of fountains and performing arts! Over the past 100 years hundreds of musical, dance, and theater performances have graced the Open Air Theatre stage. Join us for special performances to commemorate this milestone as we celebrate our artistic roots.

Our Open Air Theatre was inspired by the Villa Gori Garden Theatre near Siena, Italy. The Open Air Theatre debuted with a performance of period dances followed by garden party dance music for guests provided by a local military band on June 24, 1914.
