World Service Project, the brainchild of keyboardist and composer Dave Morecroft, offer high-impact avant funk. Pixel don’t do pigeonholes: earthy and ethereal, wistful and aggressive, sensuous and pummelling, they mingle indie rock energy with post-bop improvisational ability. Roller Trio, the latest act to emerge from Leeds’ ever-fertile music scene, exist at the point where stonking riffs meet electronic soundscapes.

Emerging from the hothouse of Istanbul’s club culture, long established in New York, and steadily taking over the world, Nublu is a club night like no other. Fired by the energy of saxophonist/keyboardist/agent provocateur Ilhan Ersahin and his Istanbul Sessions soulmates, Nublu is a collision of devastating grooves, rocketfuelled improv and genre-bending surprise. Following two storming nights at the 2011 Festival, Nublu is back, joined by Guillaume Perret and Chris Sharkey on the first night, and Orphy Robinson and Marc Ayza on the second. Both will be followed by a DJ set.

An exclusive broadcast live across European radio stations. Iain Ballamy, one of the foremost saxophonists to have emerged in the UK during the 1980s, continues to probe new territory. Featuring pianist Gareth Williams, Anorak “carries off the neat trick of having one foot planted firmly in the past and another in the present” (The Times). Panacea, fronted by pianist Robert Mitchell, who “acknowledges ’70s soul as well as jazz and brings a singular personality to the fore” (BBC Music).

Vibrant sextet Samara, led by 606 proprietor Steve Rubie, play sambainfluenced jazz, alongside Jandira Silva, one of the best Brazilian singers working in Europe.

Outhouse has established itself as one of the scene’s pioneering ensembles. Featuring Robin Fincker and Dave Smith, they play music “that moves easily and naturally between freedom and structure, grooves and urgent improvised scrabbles, fierce no-holdsbarred passages and gentle crooning” (London Jazz). The French-based Imperial Quartet constitutes two saxophones, double bass and drums and merges the jazz tradition with trance and rock ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
