Veterinary Care Makes Second Chances Possible When his owner died, nine-year-old hound mix Buster was surrendered to Lollypop Farm. Like all pets who arrive at the shelter, he was examined thoroughly, tested, and vaccinated by our veterinary team. Buster’s testing revealed that he was positive for heartworm, a serious and potentially deadly disease that affects the heart and lungs of infected pets. Because Buster was never given preventative medication, his treatment would now involve five months of a treatment protocol combined with restricted activity before he could be adopted. Expertise to Address the Need Unfortunately, stories like Buster’s are all too common at Lollypop Farm. As an open-admissions shelter that accepts any animal who is brought to our doors, pets in poor health or with serious physical ailments may arrive in need of treatment. The Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic

at Lollypop Farm, opened in 2013 during an expansion and renovation project, plays an integral role in making second chances possible for these pets by providing an extraordinary level of medical care. Dedicated and experienced professionals with years of experience in shelter medicine staff the clinic seven days a week. Dr. Cristina Cadavieco, recently promoted to medical director, has been practicing at Lollypop Farm since 2004. Dr. Mary Lummis and Dr. Ann Marie McNamara both joined the veterinary team within the last few years bringing backgrounds in highquality, high-volume spay/neuter

clinics and shelter medicine. Six licensed veterinary technicians and four veterinary assistants round out the team who treat the hundreds of pets in the shelter every day. Comprehensive Treatment Clinic staff provide comprehensive veterinary care to the homeless pets who come through Lollypop Farm. Each animal admitted to the shelter is given a full health exam by our medical team including vaccinations, deworming, heartworm testing for dogs and feline leukemia testing for cats, microchipping, and flea control medicine. Such intake exams allow veterinarians the opportunity to diagnose and treat illness, and Continued on page 8

President’s Message

• increasing the number of animals we save • providing more access to spay and neuter services for low-income pet owners in our community • preventing animal cruelty with the addition of two humane law enforcement officers, and • ensuring that we have the financial resources to accomplish our mission for years to come With one year of work behind us, we’ve already made incredible headway on behalf of the animals. We served over 13,000 pets through a variety of programs. Nearly 6,000 pets found new homes, another 3,700 were helped with spay/neuter surgery in our veterinary clinic, and many more were provided vaccinations and emergency food assistance. Our Humane Law Enforcement department provided training in dog behavior and safety to over 1,000 police officers and sheriff’s deputies who work in our community. And, we are utilizing every facet of our newly

improved campus to better care for the animals entrusted to us. Despite these great strides, there is still so much more to do. Lollpop Farm needs your help more than ever as other animal welfare agencies close their doors or limit their services. We are committed to being there for the pets in our community no matter what and no matter when. Please, as the new year unfolds, consider increasing your donation to help the animals and consider volunteering your time to help change their lives.

In 2014, our Board of Directors and staff adopted a threeyear strategic plan. The plan is elegant in its simplicity. We, along with input from our constituents and stakeholders, crafted a plan to meet the needs of the animals and people in our community. Four goals will drive our organization:

As ever, thank you for helping make a difference for so many animals.

Happy Tails Stories of Lollypop Farm pets and their adopters

Renna

 Renna is adjusting to indoor living quite nicely. She loves belly rubs, playing fetch, and laying on the couch with us. We’ve begun going on walks and she’s curious about everything. Her playful attitude and joy at life has brought a new light into our household and family. ~Nick and Elizabeth H.  Rafiki and Zazu are doing tremendously well! They definitely rule the proverbial roost here. Zazu has been the dominant boy in the interactions, coming within petting distance during feeding. They are fed 2–3 portions a day to get them used to the new care regiment, and they now come right over at feeding time and follow us around the yard. Again, I would like to share the sincere thanks of our entire family for allowing us to bring Rafiki and Zazu home to our farm, and being patient while we arranged the transportation. The farm seems more complete now, and that is a very peaceful feeling for us. ~ Michelle

Lilac

Rafiki & Zazu  We have been having such a wonderful time with Lilac since she’s become our new family member. She’s loving, adorable, and adjusted very well to her new environment. She has so much to say to everyone and anyone who will listen. When spoken to, she will always speak back. She cuddles, loves hugs, and kisses and WE melt in HER paws! She greets everyone who comes to visit, at the door, yet is cautious to strangers. She is such a very precious smart girl, and observant,Bruiser and adventurous. We pray that you will know that Lilac is secure, well loved always, now & forever in her home. ~ Rose & Bill C.

Helping Pets in Need is a Family Affair You’ll see them in various roles: greeting customers and playing with cats in our Cat Adoption Center on Friday nights, walking adoptable dogs, counseling adopters, representing the organization at our community outreach and education events, and as active members of our Lollypop Professionals group. Don also oversees several donation boxes at area businesses.

Lollypop Farm supporters and volunteers, Don and Jill Gress

Jill and Don are the proud owners of two cats adopted from Lollypop Farm: “Frank Sinatra,” so named because of his beautiful voice and bright blue eyes, and “Tony Bennett”, also a great “singer.” Their dog Lola is a 15 ½ year old poodle they adopted at nine months of age. When asked what they liked best about helping the animals at the shelter, Jill and Don both concurred “how it makes us feel!” Feeling selfish, they admitted they probably get more out of the experience themselves than the animals. We disagree! l

With the vital help of over 700 volunteers who graciously donate nearly 30,000 hours over the course of a year, Lollypop Farm is able to dedicate even more of your support toward caring for the animals. Thank you! Interested in volunteering your time? Visit www.lollypop.org/volunteer

“In reality,” says Don, “as a good husband, I do what I’m told. My wife Jill said I had to get out of the house!” As the vice president of finance for Honeywell, Don frequently works from home and rarely left the house. But all that has changed. Jill, who is a vice president for the Nielsen Company, and Don donated over 600 hours of time to Lollypop Farm last year alone.

Volunteers Jill and Don Gress epitomize the phrase “jumping in with both feet.” Looking for something they could do together as a couple, the pair gravitated to Lollypop Farm because of their mutual love of animals and the fact that they were already supporting the organization with their financial contributions.

The animals at Lollypop Farm also benefit from Don’s service through Honeywell’s “Dollars-for-Doers” program that gives charitable organizations a cash donation based upon service hours by their employees. The Gress’ also enjoy attending Lollypop Farm’s annual gala

(Don is on our Gala Committee), which this year will be held on Friday, June 19th.

Veterinary Care, continued ultimately serve to protect the health of all animals in the shelter. As in Buster’s case, some animals arrive with medical issues because they were not provided regular veterinary care in the home. Some of the most common ailments are skin problems, digestive issues, and dental disease. Surgical treatment for more serious injuries is also readily undertaken. Spay and Neuter Services In addition to vaccinations and treating illness, the veterinary team sterilizes every dog, cat, rabbit, and pot-bellied pig at Lollypop Farm prior to being adopted. Drs. Cadavieco, Lummis, and McNamara perform over 4,000 spay/neuter surgeries for shelter pets every year, preventing unplanned litters and addressing one of the key reasons kittens and puppies are surrendered to the shelter. Nearly 3,700 spay or neuter surgeries were also performed on pets in the

community in 2014. With expanded capacity in the new veterinary clinic, Lollypop Farm has begun to provide additional veterinary services for the community. The low-cost Spay/Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP) at Lollypop Farm provides affordable access to sterilization surgery. Partnering with local rescue groups, our veterinary team provides low-cost surgeries and services for pets awaiting adoption with other organizations. Team Effort Five months is a long time for any pet to be waiting in a shelter, and even more stressful when it involves treatment and restricted activity. For pets like Buster who need more time to address their illness, we are lucky to have the support of the community not only to cover the cost of the medical care, but also to provide a loving home environment. Foster care volunteers can provide individualized attention in their home

for an extended period of time, which opens up space in the shelter for other pets to be adopted in the meantime. A Brighter Future Buster has been in a foster home since November, and still has one more month of treatment. A final test after treatment will ensure Buster is healthy and free of the disease, and all signs at this point are positive. Community support makes a brighter future possible for Buster and thousands of other pets. Educating about the importance of spay/neuter and regular veterinary care improves the quality of life for pets in Greater Rochester and reduces the number animals surrendered to the shelter. And our veterinary team ensures that Lollypop Farm can provide the highest quality of care to those who do come to the shelter, and we are able to adopt even more healthy pets into loving families. Thank you for making second chances possible! l
