Dear 2021, It’s the time of the year to reflect and refresh. For this very special period of time, I would rather look forward than look back. It has been a rather unusual year, to say the least—we’ve been through many “lockdowns” and have had to get the issues done in our rooms dressed in our pyjamas with the boundaries in our normal routine of life being disrupted. Needless to say, I miss all the dressing-up moments, attending events around the world especially annual fashion weeks, travelling without a care about time differences... or even just meeting friends and families who are not living in the same city. As for myself, styling shoots over the screen has been a totally new challenge. A new challenge that has absolutely changed the possibilities of how to execute a shoot and get the magazine’s content done. Do I love it or gain something from it? I don’t, unfortunately. I get really drained and exhausted as styling has always been a very personal and intimate process (I thought), and so far, I don’t think doing it remotely is feasible and/or even a reasonable process. We do, however, need to adapt and improvise according to changes— change is unavoidable. I trained myself to stay focused and be in the present as tomorrow is unpredictable with too many plans gone askew in 2020. Do not just take 2021, but tomorrow, as a brand-new start. But I did survive 2020 which pretty much proves that I am stronger than I could have imagined myself to be, and so is everyone else who has been on this journey, too. Happy New Year! CONTRIBUTORS FRANCESCO BONASIA Photographer A young Italian photographer as well as the director and founder of a company active in 3D technology for fashion—INSTITVTE, Francesco Bonasia is known for his colourful photography that exudes a touch of fun. His own style of dressing which revolves around crazy prints, unexpected hues, vintage hats and sunglasses often goes hand in hand with most of his photography work. Fashion aside, you will find him bringing his camera everywhere, waiting to take the perfect shot of the day-to-day street scenes. Whether it’s a casual street shot or a professional one for a fashion brand, his images are highly emotional and on the edge of euphoria thus leaving an unforgettable impact on the audiences. 1

RAMONA TABITA Stylist Ramona Tabita has always gravitated towards art, constantly inspired and visually boosted by her surroundings. From her intense passion for photos, writing and all-round creativity, the Sicily-born has since become a professional stylist deeply immersed in the fashion sector with a defined style that is incredibly sought after by main players all over the world. Now living in Milan, her impressive clientele also includes celebrities and music videos. ELENA GAGGERO Makeup Artist As a kid, Genoa-born Elena Gaggero developed a strong fascination for the art of cosmetics used on opera singers and dancers to transform and portray certain expressions. It wasn’t until she hit the age of 19 that she made the big decision to move to Milan in pursuit of a career in makeup. There, she attended a makeup academy and assisted various talented makeup artists before venturing out on her own. To her, makeup is a “cure” that has helped her in expressing her feelings through shapes and colours. While she mainly works in the fashion industry, she also lends her expertise to artists, singers and TV commercials. She is currently based in Milan where she continues to experiment with her art. YU NAGATOMO Hair Stylist Born in Saitama, Japan, Yu Nagatomo was constantly inspired by the world of fashion which led to his decision of establishing himself in the European fashion industry. After being a hairstylist in Tokyo for almost five years, he made a huge leap and moved to Milan in 2017 where he began hairstyling for numerous fashion editorials and brands’ photoshoot. He remains in Milan and continues to express his appreciation for culture through refreshing hairstyles.

7. Louis Vuitton:  Looking for a reason to pay a call on Louis Vuitton? Then it’s time to pull out that “yearend retail therapy” card as the brand has released a plethora of seasonal essentials that range from leather handbags to plush and vibrant wool beanies. 8. Fendi:  The Roman fashion house is going back to basics with its Fendi Pack creations inspired by its own packaging. This neo-shopping bag per fectly captures the idea with its familiar yellow hue, black frame a n d th e iconic Fen di Roma logo embellishment. 9. Dior:  Not one to disappoint, Dior continues its winning streak in the accessory department with the Dior & Moi pumps. Reinterpreting the house’s iconic cannage motif via precious embroidery, the pair features subtle openwork design and a ribbon that highlights the ankle.

With the pandemic having virtually grounded everyone resulting in fashion weeks going phy-gital, this resort season has become the de facto mouthpiece speaking crystal-clearly about fashion’s current state of mind. The verdict is a curious case of extremes: the wearable, practical and comfortable versus the fantastic, dreamy and romantic—a balancing act of each camp carrying comparable cachet in what designers believe will satisfy our sartorial needs and wants, as for now. Pulling back from extravagance but not visual impact, the wardrobe solution to a work-from-home world and social-distancing style of living seems to have converged on a more refined, unfussy silhouette being served a strong, solid monocolour block. Designers who have embraced this philosophy are proposing clean, languid forms that either skim the figure or billow around it. This ease and effortlessness—that we sought from the clothes we wore in a lockdown and are now accustomed to—is then purposefully injected with a joyful, vibrant chromatic palette of acid yellows, jade greens, cherry reds and electric blues and pinks, as seen at Valentino, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga and others.

A celebration of the planet Earth and all of its wonders, the latest capsule collection by Lacoste combines the brand’s timeless silhouettes with the majestic prints and forms of the animal kingdom. The collection that’s made in collaboration with National Geographic highlights four key animals: the Grévy’s zebra, the green and black poison-dart frog, the Halloween pennant dragonfly and the jaguar—all of which are selected from the extensive archive of award-winning photographer and National Geographic Fellow Joel Sartore.

There’s a new and exciting service offered at Valentino where it allows one to personalise the Valentino Garavani Rockstud bag with an image of their pet. Clients can now customise the details of the bag to their liking on the Maison’s website and illustrator-slash-artist Riccardo Cusimano will take it from there, embellishing it with their initials along with a portrait of their pet based on the provided pet image. Available in three different styles and five colour variations, the bag can also be paired with the Valentino Garavani Rockstud leashes and dog collars in a matching colour palette.

If you are wondering how Saint Laurent will be celebrating the coming holiday season, their latest Christmas 2020 capsule collection holds all the answers. Red appears to be the prevailing theme with key bags like sunset chain bag, city backpack as well as smaller accessories such as the iPhone case and Nuxx bodybag taking on the festive hue in print leather and tartan wool. SNEAKER GAME The Gucci App continues to expand and bridge the relationship between the world of fashion and digital environment, this time rolling out a new virtual space that is entirely dedicated to the House’s eclectic sneakers and digital counterparts called Gucci Sneaker Garage. With this latest addition, you can now not only try on sneakers virtually but also design your very own pair by tweaking, hybridising and combining elements from the existing designs, or create your own original hybrid. In celebration of the feature, Gucci reached out to a group of artists such as Helen Kurkum, Michael Cutini and long-time friend Trevor Andrew to introduce their creative spin on the brand’s eclectic sneakers.

Coco Convention Glamorous would be an understatement when it comes to the opening of Chanel’s grand Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto exhibition in Paris. After a major extensive renovation, Palais Galliera presents the first Parisian retrospective where the work of Gabrielle Chanel takes centre stage. It showcases more than 350 exceptional pieces encompassing dresses, accessories and jewels from Palais Galliera’s own collection and Patrimoine de Chanel archives from various international museums. From there, visitors can get a glimpse into the evolution of the visionary designer’s style, characteristics of her work, emergence of her codes and contribution to fashion. The temporary exhibition will be running till 14 March 2021 with the support of Chanel.

Art Attack

Paying homage to American artist Ken Price, Loewe has launched a collection inspired by a series of 20 hand-painted ceramic plates he made for Newport Beach’s La Palme restaurant in the early 1980s. The Loewe X Ken Price capsule collection sees motifs from the La Palme, Easter Island and LA series reinterpreted as prints, all-over patterns, intarsia and leather marquetry—unfolding on pieces of clothing as well as leather accessories. Price’s colourful drawings can also be seen on the silk shirts, sweatshirts, washed denim trousers and beyond.

Have you heard? Italian fashion house Moschino is partnering with seminal skate brand Palace for a limited collection of ready-to-wear, accessories and skate hardware. The New Vanity 80’s Bag by Saint Laurent

Make way for this sassy and swingy shoulder bag that is equal parts function and fun. BY TAN SIOK HOON

The infatuation with all things Eighties remains unabated in the world of fashion—we can safely say and affirm. From his riff and refresh on Monsieur Saint Laurent’s hippie-luxe legacy from the late ’60s and early ’70s, it was onwards to the decade of excess as Anthony Vaccarello embraced brights and latex for Saint Laurent’s F/W 2020 collection. This season, the creative director reverts to his usual dark, muted palette as he injects a soft rock attitude into his latest Spring 2021 collection. Exuding sensual sophistication is the trove of silky blouses; leather and lace; languid tailoring, trenches; and yes, the House’s signature polka dot and leopard prints— imported from standard Saint Laurent emblems and refreshed for today. We see hemlines rising dramatically in the scheme of hot pants and micro skirts to partner the requisite impeccably tailored jacket in a nod to ’80s power dressing that is less sharp and ostentatious, instead quieter and more effortless.

As its moniker suggests, the new Vanity 80’s bag borrows not only from the functional form of a vanity case but the era of its namesake. Its supple vertical lines and the grain de poudre leather underpin the vintage vibe and authentic feels of the practical sac, replete with a spacious interior and a versatile zipper opening right across the top to easily access the contents kept within. Besides the quilted and topstitching details of the leather, the Vanity 80’s bag flaunts a long strap of part leather and part chain with an adjustable buckle that allows it to be worn in freewheeling shoulder or crossbody styles. With the extras of a tag displaying the metal golden logo of the House, this gilt-and-black rendition brings much to the table not only as a recognisable member of the Saint Laurent bag clan, but a utilitarian and everyday partner emanating the energy and brilliance of classic ’80s allure.

The story goes back to 1995 when Dior meticulously crafted a bag from the finest leather paired with intricate stitching that evoked the Cannage motif of Christian Dior’s Napoleon III chairs. According to legend, the artisanal gem was made in just a single night and would later be gifted to Diana, the Princess of Wales, by France’s former First Lady Bernadette Chirac during her trip to Paris. The top-handled bag became an instant favourite, making many subsequent appearances alongside the princess who went on to order it in every available version. Before long, it became incredibly sought after and eventually gained the stature that propelled it into the ranks of a timeless classic. In 1996, the bag was rechristened to “Lady Dior” in homage to her irreverent style. It has been two decades since its conception and the Lady Dior remains one of the French house’s enduring designs, reinvented in different materials and colours. Its signature silhouette stays untouched and it serves as a testament to Dior’s exceptional savoir-faire. Above that, it has undergone the most ingenious interpretations courtesy of the Dior Lady Art project. Initiated by the brand’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri in

2016, the annual project serves as the House’s dedication to creativity and freedom of expression as well as a manifestation of the Lady Dior’s recognisable appeal. International artists are invited to create their own vision of the bag, with the special collaboration initially open to only American and British artists before it was broadened to the global arena. For the Dior Lady Art’s fifth installment, the tradition continues. This time giving carte blanche to ten esteemed artists from around the world including India, China and Russia to infuse their own aesthetic onto the timeless classic to metamorphosise it into wearable art. Every last detail, from the size to the fabric and lucky charm, is given new life through the kaleidoscopic lens of these contemporary art-world darlings. The result? A total of ten different visionary Lady Dior masterpieces from these talents: Joël Andrianomearisoa, Judy Chicago, Gisela Colon, Song Dong, Bharti Kher, Mai-Thu Perret, Recycle Group, Chris Soal, Claire Tabouret and Olga Titus. Always trust Longchamp to bring something new to the table every season and this coming Spring/Summer 2021, the Maison unveils Très Paris—a music video and short film that showcase the new collection through a whimsical tale of two Parisian women and their Longchamp bags in Paris. Through the creative vision of Longchamp’s artistic director Sophie Delafontaine, the collection breaks away from the overly sophisticated style of the classic Parisian woman and brings a more exciting, fun and casual side of Longchamp to the plate. Starring Amber Anderson and Mathilde Ollivier, the short film and accompanying music video, directed by filmmaker Lope Serrano, take us on a captivating journey that brings a new light to the Spring/Summer collection—one that is carefree, uninhibited and surreal. For the collection, Sophie Delafontaine introduces audacious macramé on skirts, tops, and shirt fronts and a net-style print on both ready-to-wear items and some bags and accessories, along with designs with dazzling English embroidery. Then comes the contrast of athletic sportswear nuances that bring the much-needed edge and mobility for the Longchamp women—chic, elegant and always on-the-go. Sophie says, “Although the collection is rhythmed by sportswear such as zip-up sweatshirts and pants with elastic

waists, I also wanted to create a sensual side and some tailored items inspired by the wardrobes of stylish men. The idea was to adorn these structured looks with bright colours, materials, and designs such as floral prints to make them more feminine.” For the bags (the major highlight of the Maison), one has already caught on and is buzzing on social media: the Filet Le Pliage, which is a mesh tote bag with Le Pliage handles, made in partnership with FILT, the French manufacturer of the famous cotton mesh shopping bag. The Longchamp Roseau and Longchamp 1980 collections remain as one of the key highlights to the collection with new reinterpretations in smooth, vinyl-style or crocodile-style leathers, while the new Brioche line will make its debut in the coming summer of 2021. Sophie says, “We wanted to create authentic new items that showcase our expertise. Long-lasting products that we can use for years to come and redesign to make them even better.” This season, all hands are on a bet for a less complicated wardrobe in the spirit of “less is more”. VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Nature has always been a subject that’s dear to Van Cleef & Arpels. In tracing the history of the maison, delicate flora and enthralling fauna have appeared in the brand’s listings more times than one can count. One of the most notable creations that has sprung from this fascination is the lucky Alhambra. Inspired by the four-leaf clover, the range has been regularly revisited and refreshed since its inception in 1968—a poetic reference to the perpetual evolution of nature. So with all that in mind, it’s no surprise that Van Cleef & Arpels has settled on the colour green for much of its output. The palette here ranges from the jewellery box’s light moss hue to the saturated green of malachite and emerald gems. The

calming aura radiating from the colourway is also imparted to the premier jeweller’s boutiques and it is further amplified with the latest joint venture with French artist Alexandre Benjamin Navet. A frequent collaborator of the house and the winner of the 2017 Grand Prix Design Parade Toulon Van Cleef & Arpels, Navet has brought plant shapes and dazzling colours into many of the brand’s majestic salons including its Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York. The large-format interior design concept sees copious supplies of flowers and bouquets unfurl across store facades and furnishings to welcome visitors and let them be immersed in the unfiltered world of Van Cleef & Arpels.

CARTIER It’s all about burning passion at Cartier. The colour red, a universal symbol of love, began seeping through the jewellery maison circa 1920 or 1930. Stemming from a simple jewellery case, the crimson shade prevailed over a wide range of colours—from dark green and olive to antique pink—that were offered at the turn of the 20th century when Cartier opened its boutique on Paris’ exclusive precinct rue de la Paix. The Cartier Red Box has since become a cornerstone of the brand and a catalyst of new ventures outside the realm of jewellery like the creation of the Guirlande de Cartier bag. Its prominence and influence has also been well-documented on

the big screen: the box and the sparkling creations nestled within have appeared in cinematic gems such as Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot, William Wyler’s How to Steal a Million and James Gray’s Two Lovers. Fast forward to present day, the bold visual accent remains prominent across the Cartier domain. The Cartier Mansion on New York’s Fifth Avenue, for instance, is basically a larger-than-life version of the red box. With the red canopies embellishing its Neo-Renaissance facade and a portion of the interior decor boasting rich red leather walls and ceilings, the flagship boutique promises its patrons a full Cartier experience.

TIFFANY & CO. There have been few establishments in the luxury market that have mastered the art of colour association and Tiffany & Co. is decidedly one of them. The world-renowned Tiffany Blue, described as forget-me-not blue or robin’s egg blue, has been a staple at the American jewellery house since the late 19th century, precisely when it graced the cover of the 1878 Blue Book featuring the most extravagant handcrafted jewels. Its brilliant cyan shade came about the same time when turquoise gemstone reached the pinnacle of fame. Back then, Victorian brides would present their attendants with a doveshaped brooch set with the bluish green stone as a wedding memento. That might explain the collective gasps you heard

at the glimpse of the Tiffany Blue Box in Sweet Home Alabama as Patrick Dempsey dropped on one knee before Reese Witherspoon. And while we’re at it, Tiffany & Co. having a significant presence in pop culture has only boosted the icon status of Tiffany Blue. From the many shopping scenes in Clueless, in which the brand’s signature blue bag was a commanding co-star, to that shot of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s gazing through the store window framed by silky drapes in a similar colour code, Tiffany & Co. has been effectively using the trademark colour to convey the notion of luxury and elegance synonymous to its brand.

The Archi Dior Ring by Dior Joaillerie

Threading romantic lace into the lavish collection, the combination of the brand’s haute couture staple with Monsieur Dior’s passion for architecture is in perfect synergy. BY NIKITA NAWAWI

Lace to Christian Dior is pretty much what spatulas, palette knives and trowels were to artist Jean-Paul Riopelle or the “wipe effect” was to filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. These are devices instrumental in catapulting the respective artists into big-name brands. Like ribbons, silk and draping, lace has been a mainstay at the heritage house for aeons, cherished for its ethereal lightness. It’s a recurring motif that has not only made a splash in fashion but also in jewellery. Just two years after picking the fine fabric from the archives for the Dior Dior Dior high jewellery collection, Dior Joaillerie creative director Victoire de Castellane has given the Archi Dior range a similarly extravagant treatment. The new

reinterpretation sees de Castellane blending the “coutural” spirit of the lace with Monsieur Dior’s architectural principle which was the starting point for Archi Dior when it debuted in 2014. This neo-Archi Dior ring, in particular, embodies the delicacy of the meshwork as well as Dior’s excellence in high fashion. Crafting it in white gold with diamonds, de Castellane’s recutting of the lace pieces has transformed the lightweight fabric into a jewellery heavyweight champion. The ring also reflects the exceptional savoir-faire of the Dior Joaillerie artisans as the feminine curves of the ring describe the movement of a skirt or the pleat of a dress.

UNCUT GEMS Less than a year after the momentous discovery of the black-coated Sewelô, Louis Vuitton has once again hit the jackpot with another rough diamond estimated to be one to two billion years of age. The 549-carat Sethunya, which means flower in Setswana in a nod to the brand’s Monogram flower, is set to be nurtured by Louis Vuitton and collaborator Lucara, the owner of the Karowe diamond mine and HB Antwerp. Louis Vuitton plans to offer bespoke diamonds fashioned from this rare specimen, enticing its clients with the ultimate personalised high jewellery experience.

EXTRAORDINARY DIALS CHARMS EXTRAORDINAIRE BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS This utterly romantic Charms Extraordinaire tableaux from the Extraordinary Dials collection is a horological delight that sees the dial diameter of each watch increase progressively to represent the blossoming love between a Parisian pair. Love is a perpetual theme that never grows old but gets more and more rousing at Van Cleef & Arpels over time. The tale begins on the Pont des Arts above the glistening Seine with the Charms Romance Parisienne Rencontre watch (25 mm) in white and rose gold, where the lovers with silhouettes sculpted in rose gold first come together. They bask under a spessartite garnet sun on a backdrop embellished with champlevé enamel and miniature painting, surrounded by the gentle glow of a gradation of pink sapphires decorating the bezel.

RONDE LOUIS CARTIER ENAMEL FILIGREE BY CARTIER One of the two new Métiers d’Art watches created by Cartier’s artisans in La Chaux-de-Fonds, this umpteenth and unique rehash of the panther is the culmination of exchanges among marquetr y craftsmen, jewellers, designers, enamellers, gem-setters and miniature painters. These experts have manipulated motif, material and volume to realise la panthère’s varied inspirations since its first abstract form appeared in the Maison’s treasure trove in 1914. Just from the first glimpse, it is apparent why it has taken an orchestra of skills to create the exquisite dial. This latest unexpected encounter with Cartier’s emblematic feline—a symbol of audacity, uniqueness and strength— takes place at a bamboo grove which has been enacted using the filigree technique and enamel.

To create the bamboo foreground on the mesmerising dial, the craftsman has to first heat up the enamel powder before stretching the glass until it assumes the shape of the bamboo. At this stage, it is then set and fixed to the dial with the help of tiny yellow gold strands. Next to be employed from the arsenal of Cartier’s artisanal expertise to optimise the dial’s sense of perspective and depth are: firstly, domed champlevé enamel for the bamboo in the background and the black spots of the beast’s fur and eyes; and secondly, miniature painting for the sky and the background bamboo. Only 30 limited-edition pieces of this individually numbered watch in 18k white gold are made available worldwide. Powered by a 430 MC manual-winding movement with 38-hour power reserve, it features a 36 mm diameter; a brilliant-cut diamondset crown; a total of 269 brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel, dial and buckle; and a blue alligator leather strap.

A Star Is Born

Meticulously melding tradition and innovation, the new Ref. 5303 Minute Repeater Tourbillon is among the latest to enrich Patek Philippe’s extensive family of grand complications. BY TAN SIOK HOON

Patek Philippe is acclaimed for possessing one of the most sweeping collections of regularly produced grand complications in the fine watchmaking universe. From minute repeaters with perpetual calendars to astronomical watches, timepieces with tourbillons and references that incorporate several of these highly sought-after functions, the manufacture’s repertoire continues to be refreshed and reinvented with the generational transfer of know-how coupled with the most advanced and sophisticated research. The Genevan icon’s history of minute repeaters began as far back as 1839 when the company was founded. Among the first timepieces to be crafted was a quarter repeater, now proudly exhibited at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. From then, it has embarked on an eternal journey to fulfil its passion for grand complications, resulting in endless eras of horological creations and patents. From legendary supercomplicated pocket watches in the 20th century featuring chiming functions and elaborate astronomical displays, Patek Philippe ventured into miniaturising grand complications to be worn on the wrist—giving rise to the first known wristwatch with a perpetual calendar in 1925. Towards the end of the 20th century, the trailblazing pursuit gave the manufacture two first-of-its-kind pocket watches: the Calibre 89 with 33 complications that maintained its status of

the world’s most complicated portable mechanical timepiece for 25 years, and the Star Caliber 2000 with 21 complications. At the turn of the century in 2001, Patek Philippe’s art of miniaturising highly elaborate mechanisms hit a high point when the Sky Moon Tourbillon fitted with 12 complications was launched. This was followed in 2014 by the Grandmaster Chime with 20 complications , which would top the list as Patek Philippe’s most complicated wristwatch. Central to this ongoing progress and development at the Genevan manufacture are two fundamental guiding principles. Firstly, the aim to simultaneously maximise technical complexity and minimise volume (with the smallest height and diameter) in the design of supremely slender and timeless cases. Next, each complication must be user-friendly in terms of convenience, functional integrity and legibility. The new Ref. 5303 Minute Repeater Tourbillon, released as a grand complications trio by Patek Philippe in 2020, thoroughly serves the manufacture’s mandate and embodies craftsmanship that make it a precious work of art. Above all, it re-establishes the fact that Patek Philippe is one of the gifted interpreters of the music of time—a reputation honed since the creation of its first pocket watch with a minute repeater in 1845. Also within the manufacture’s annals are two extraordinary

examples: the Sky Moon Tourbillon wristwatch showcasing a minute repeater with cathedral gongs and the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime with five chiming functions including two patented global debuts. Initially unveiled in a world debut at the Watch Art Grand Exhibition Singapore 2019 as a limited edition of 12 watches, the Ref. 5303 Minute Repeater Tourbillon has been subtly reworked for this latest reinterpretation that takes its place as part of the current Patek Philippe collection. As the first Patek Philippe minute repeater that presents the striking mechanism on the dial side, its open architecture boldly and proudly takes the centre stage without a conventional dial. A highlight that is sure to please enthusiasts, the repeater mechanism, replete with the hammers and gongs, can be admired in action for the first time with the watch strapped on the wrist—a feature that expresses the customer-centric policy of Patek Philippe. Doubling up on the transparency effect is its application on the tourbillon where the back side of its cage is visible beneath the seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. This composition beautifully sets up the perfect backdrop to illuminate the striking contrast between the filigreed steel parts and the rose gilt plate.

To optimise its aesthetic and beauty, the manually wound caliber R TO 27 PS was subtly reworked with certain pierced components that is common for skeletonised movements. Patek Philippe does not waste the opportunity to marshal its heritage and ancestral skills in the manual finissage of movement parts by decorating the plate with Genevan circular graining, applying a delicate perlage to the recesses, and embellishing the strike work hammers with a circular satin finish. Framing the perfectly orchestrated work of fine watchmaking art is a unique rose gold case with a wide, cambered and polished bezel, highlighted by white gold inlays with foliage engravings on the caseband and the strap lugs. This motif is seen also on the white gold slide on the case flank’s left-hand that activates the minute repeater. The hour circle indicator is bedecked in black-lacquered sapphire crystal rim with powdered rose gold markers. On the sapphire crystal case back adorned with a white gold rim, one can admire the movement whose openwork decoration mirrors the case intarsias and the repeater slide. To cap this magnificent study in watchmaking artistry, elegance and manual finissage is the inimitable sound of a Patek Philippe repeater timepiece—a melody of time whose acoustic and lyrical quality has been personally rated with utmost attention by manufacture president Thierry Stern.

I’m thrilled and looking forward to this journey. What was your first M.A.C product? I first used their lip product. I am still a huge fan of M.A.C lip offerings and love playing around with the countless number of colours and textures to perfect my look. When did you discover your love for makeup? Since I was a little girl, I have always been interested in makeup and fashion. But if I had to say the time I officially fell in love with makeup, it would be after my debut with Blackpink. Since then, whenever we release a new album or when I’m on set for a photoshoot, I would often suggest a look that I have always wanted to try. Where do you get your makeup inspiration? I constantly review various makeup looks for inspiration as well as work closely with my makeup artist to finalise my look through trial and error before settling on one that suits the mood I am trying to express in a shoot. I just try to stay true myself and in return, this has given me confidence and strength which I hope is reflected in my work. Eco-Friends The coming year is already looking to be a great one for sustainability as Australian skincare brand Aesop will be joining forces with the leader in responsible fashion design and circularity, RÆBURN in an effort to obtain the B Corp certification by the end of 2020. “Aesop’s ethics and products are second to none so for RÆBURN the initial idea of partnering made perfect sense - from there we wanted to push ourselves to be sure we’d be creating something truly innovative for the market,” shares RÆBURN’s creative director Christopher Raeburn. Their first joint venture to fulfill Aesop’s mission of making all of its packaging completely reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 is set to drop in January 2021 with more to follow.

Apart from the campaign, you shared a special connection with Burberry having walked Riccardo’s first show for S/S ’19. What do you like the most about the brand DNA? I love the creative spirit of Burberry and the brand’s heritage, and also the way Burberry stands out on a global stage. Tell us more about your relationship with Riccardo Tisci since you started working together for Burberry? Riccardo believed in me and has constantly pushed me to do my best from the very first time we met. I remember being very nervous at our first meeting, but he was very supportive. He is very intuitive on set and provides so much vision and guidance. He is also very sweet. I love working with him and I appreciate him as a person as well as his creative vision.

How would you describe your personal style? Most of my works still have that unfinished cut-out look that reflects the analog collage process involving cutting and glueing. I just don’t want people to confuse them as digital collages. I also play with shapes, patterns and I prefer my subjects to be clear and uncomplicated. How do you develop your skill set? Social media and digital platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest play a vital role in shaping my understanding of collage. They provide me with access to many artists around the world and I’ve learned a lot from fellow collage makers that I discovered. What’s the process of creating a collage like? I choose my main material from magazines. I would go on a hunt at bookstores and start flipping through them for inspiration, looking for content that catches my eye. Once I have the materials, I’d set the time to do it, publish it on my Instagram page and tag the featured personalities and media involved. Is there something else that you’d want to try next? I am planning to create something that’s related to sustainability like incorporating a candy wrapper and turning it into a dress or a skirt with a runway model, much like what British visual artist Martha Haversham has been doing.

OLIVIA STEELE, 35 (@STEELEISM) A self-proclaimed natural-born artist, Olivia Steele humbly credits her country music singer and interior designer mother for her strong connection to light artistry. The Tennessee-born recalls being mesmerised by the power of science behind it all, albeit feeling a little uninspired by the technical aspect of things, after studying lighting design. She’s particularly in awe of neon as she believes that it is able to change a room and add a certain energy to the space. What drew you to neon? It’s an instant vibe. The process of bending and pumping glass requires a lot of skill, patience and energy. The balance between permanence and fragility: the glass is so fragile and can break in an instant, yet it is something that can last forever. The process alone has been one of my biggest teachers in life. It is so full of metaphors, it’s almost comical. How did you end up with displayed words as the medium? Words are seeds. There’s something about cementing the words in an illuminated physical form that really gives it weight and meaning.… And when you combine the power of words with light, a profound force is born. My philosophy is centred around the desire to make one think and elevate the mind. Anything and everything I create serves a purpose. How do you come up with such catchy and yet profound phrases? I’m always writing down things I feel, things that have transpired

in conversation and various quotes from my favourite sages. My father was an intellectual or philosopher of sorts. He would have wise truisms for just about anything. Growing up around his words of wisdom definitely had a big impact on me, so this was where my fascination and passion for working with words came from. They say great art comes from those who are unafraid to get personal. What has been the most personal project you’ve worked on? Back in 2014, I created six handwritten statements formed in neon, directed at my estranged mother, whom I could not communicate with. I wanted to document my side of a family tragedy and record my statement in the most beautifully poetic way, so I shot a film called Nothing Is What It Seems featuring these messages, installed on the property where I grew up in Nashville. It’s pretty heavy but true, no doubt. Neon and neon-lit slogans have been gaining popularity these past few years. You can see them in almost every hipster-centric establishment there is. Do you think this would devalue it as a medium of art? There’s definitely been a trend with neon in a non-commercial sign façon, people see the medium presented in a different way and start to crave it. I am often imitated, but never duplicated. My fabrication and installation are unparalleled. To a trained eye, it would be hard to confuse my work with a generic neon sign. Context and details will always protect the value of my work. I can’t say this about all neon art, though.

MASSIMILIANO MORO, 34 (@MASSIMILIANO.MORO) Massimiliano Moro was exploring through the mediums that would express his artistic leanings at his alma mater when he first found himself gravitating towards light and movement. Although light is a material that crosses various disciplines, Moro considers himself a sculptor as he attempts to work with shadows as he would with stone or wood, removing and adding materials to create shapes and especially voids—an art form that might have been lost on some. You mentioned that you’re “happy that light artists are starting to have a presence in the media”. Do you feel like light art hasn’t been given the attention it deserves? Let’s just say that light is often seen as a tool to make flashy installations and bright interventions, where the poetic part of it is almost absent. But lately, it has been drawing attention for its subtleness and delicateness, thanks to those who use the material in a precise and refined way. Light is no longer confined to festivals and events; it has a place in museums and galleries. With light comes a spectrum of colour, intensity and so on. How do you take control over them? My approach is very practical, based on trials in the studio and there’s a little drawing or projecting beforehand. This is because light is such a fragile material that every millimetric change can distort the perception of the work. I develop my work around combining two sources of light to generate deeply saturated shadows, so I’m more interested in the complementary colours that result from these combinations

than the intensity or exactness of the measurements. What comes first: the story or the stagecraft? I don’t think that we can separate the two things. Light is such a sincere material that stagecraft becomes part of the story even if you try to avoid it. For instance, it’s kind of unnatural for me to hide the light source as the eye will always try to look for it. I always try to avoid any idea of magic and secret, and expose everything that creates the light and shadows. This way, the stagecraft becomes one with the story and we can see what’s there instead of wondering how it’s done. I understand that you’re partial to site-specific art. How do you choose your locations? I strongly believe that every light art project is site-specific. You can’t separate light from its environment, and every sculpture creates dialogues with its surroundings. Shadows are very delicate, and they react very differently to each environment. Because of that, I usually prefer to be indoors to have more control in the room and being able to show all the nuances needed. What’s next for you? At the moment, I’m just readjusting to the current situation and trying to make the best of these peculiar times we’re in. I’ve always been interested in the relation between homes, art, and light, so now it’s a good time to understand it better. I’m launching a platform to sell some limited-edition sculptures focused on living spaces. They’re on palmyr.art.

NINDYA NARESWARI, 31 (@__NARESWARI__) An internship with Ingo Maurer a decade ago was a careeraltering experience that opened up a whole new world for Nindya Nareswari. Discovering the art form of light for the first time there, Nindya was immediately taken by the joyful and poetic nature of his works, and it guided her to the path she’s on now. Today, the Berlin-based Indonesian artist is actively designing her inspired and emotive artworks that range from light objects or sculptures to set and stage lighting. Having experimented with light and all kinds of materials, what’s the most surprising finding or outcome you have seen? Every experiment I have done has produced something that surprised me and always in a good way. But I would say the phenomenon of light polarisation, when I did my first experiment on it, really surprised me. The changing colours really intrigued me and made me wonder about the unseen world around us. I am interested in how this scientific event reflects our life. What’s your creative process like? Normally I start by developing a concept, sometimes along with a little bit of sketch, but most of the time I dive into experimentation pretty quickly. Working with light is all about experiment. You can do simulations with computer software but it won’t be as accurate and effective as experimentation with physical materials. Like how light interacts with the different characteristics of materials. What’s the most challenging aspect in creating light art? For me, it is to conquer my self-doubt and dissatisfaction

with the end result. As for the work, it’s to find the right space since the atmosphere and the visibility of the light is very much influenced by the space and vice versa. To achieve that perfect condition is very challenging as most of the time I have to compromise and adapt to what is possible. How do you conjure emotions through your works and are they always pleasant and beautiful or do you aim to provoke as well? It is through the combination of all: light effect, movement and colours. It’s not always beautiful, though. Shadows can depict mystery and spirituality but also intimacy. Reflection can express beauty but also ferocity. Movement can define happiness or sorrow. And colours can make the atmosphere pleasant or uncomfortable. My work is about emotion, perception, and experience. So I would like my work to provoke the way people perceive and experience through their vision. How do you do that? For example, my friend Rasmus Ottesen Stride and I did a multisensory experiment at Empathy Supper earlier this year. It’s a five-course dinner program where we asked the participants to experience the food in different light atmospheres including an environment with monochromatic light, so the real colour was taken out. I would like to bring awareness about what light can do to our mind and as it turned out, some of the participants ate the food they thought they didn’t like (because obviously they couldn’t see the colour) and they liked it at the end!
