I

can’t believe I’m actually writing this but – we’re in July already. It seems only yesterday that I was sat mulling over the Editor’s Letter for January, clinging onto the last few strands of festivity and staring down the barrel of another approaching year. Being busy and working hard means that time is very much of the essence, so no room for slacking I’m afraid. Blink and you’re half way through the year – which is exactly what has happened in this case; having quite literally blinked (so it seems) we at LOCO have now released our seventh edition of the year. Crikey. I imagine the feeling is very much mutual with this month’s cover star… Being the creative director of a successful hair salon is no mean feat – likewise, running a fully functioning beauty room takes just as much professional knowhow. So, to do both at the same time must take some doing, right? In this edition I talk to Abbie Jackson, the woman who sits at the helm of Marie Claire Hair & Beauty. Abbie talks us through her business journey; touching on what it takes to make it in this competitive industry. ARGUMENT “ ” This Month:

Brexit - Will the grass be greener?

W

ithout going into a large amount of detail as to whether or not I chose to vote IN or OUT, the fact remains that the split between staying and leaving was one of the tightest political debates in this country’s history. Amidst the worries from the campaign that fought to keep Britain united alongside the European Union, and the elation of the opposing side that won their battle to see us regain our supposed independence, it has been utterly confirmed that Britain is now undoubtedly torn. A difference of a mere 3.8% split the country, which surprised many (myself included) at how close the debate was. According to an exit poll completed by The London Economic Society, 64% of the remain votes came from voters aged between 18 and 24, yet the leave campaign saw 58% of their votes come from an age group of 65 and above. This may not conclude much, other than the variance in the mind-set of differing age groups – however it goes without saying that this decision to leave the EU will effect more than just the present population – in other words, the children and grandchildren of those over the age of 65. David Cameron has now announced his resignation as PM and is to step down in defence of his beliefs to remain in the EU. This again sparks more speculation as to who is the right candidate to take our newly independent nation forward – sadly we are hardly spoilt for choice. Nigel Farage admitted on national television to GMB’s Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid that the leave campaign “made a mistake” in pledging the £350million a week that Britain saves in exiting the EU to the NHS. Hardly the most inspiring winners speech we’ve ever heard was it? L O C O | J U LY 2 0 1 6 | 0 8

As you would expect, this did the leave campaign no favours, having used this promise as a cornerstone for the entire argument of ‘taking control’ of our own money. However, all the finer details aside I return to my previous point. Britain’s public seem as divided as ever over the entire BREXIT debate. Not just from Europe, but from a global community. Division in the ranks is to be expected in any debate, there are always going to be winners and losers. But, and this is a big but – without a firm idea of where we are going, be it immediately forwards or backwards, we will suffer in the long run. The question is - just how long will that run be?

Yes, David Cameron will no longer be our Prime Minister as of October. Yes, it really is anyone’s guess for who is the right man, or woman for the job? And yes, I am concerned for the welfare of my generation and future generations alike. But, if we continue to display our disgust or our delight over this debate for much longer, we will get nowhere fast. Having indefinitely broken away from the European Union, we have to join together and realise that going it completely alone is not the way forward. Of course, this could benefit us, but again it may not (as nobody really knows the solid ramifications of this in all honesty). Many who voted to leave may argue that the message sent out by Britain’s decision to remove itself from the EU promotes wider globalisation and trade between more than a collective group of nations, which at first glance sounds reasonable. Still, I personally believe that this debate has had more of a helping hand in dividing us as both a nation and an island, than uniting us with a global market. My advice to you is simple – believe in what this country is capable of and do whatever you can to unite amongst yourselves – be it with the European Union or not. Because quite frankly, that’s all we can do…I do however sincerely hope that the message we have sent out to the rest of the world is not one of segregation, as a chain reaction here could spell major trouble for global peace and progression.

he team at the Filmore restaurant promote a healthy lifestyle, with the mind-set of ‘a healthy diet is not what you don’t eat, but precisely what you do’ – good news for us all (and even your dogs are welcome). There are a variety of different things to be cheerful about with the arrival of this healthy haven; al fresco dining, a fresh seasonal menu that is updated monthly and a selection of gluten free cakes are just a few things to mention. With nine thriving sites located across the Yorkshire region it’s clear that these guys know what they’re talking about when it comes to pure, wholesome grub – so let’s delve into the world of Filmore & Union: The MENU: As I mentioned above, the team at Filmore promote a healthy ethos which focuses on organic produce. is why you can expect to be wowed by their range of dishes off their seasonal menu, as well as their drinks, snacks, shakes, juices, soups – you name it, everything. A particular favourite of mine at the moment is their Tumeric Latte, which is a real winner in my eyes. Elsewhere, their organic coffee is again something special, a perfect combination with a selection of their healthy snacks on offer. With a new menu launching, Filmore & Union have added a new casual dining feel to the whole healthy mentality that exudes from every corner of the place. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a children’s menu to go with their relaxed California style dining experience. In addition to the food, they offer a fully licensed bar, geared up to make both healthy and either alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. Sundays can be spent tucking into a Sunday brunch in the courtyard, while catching up on the latest headlines in the local paper.

We chat to one of the most unique restaurants in the Hull & East Riding Region to give us the low down on one of their colourful and delicious Summer dishes - Santiago Chicken. Ingredients: Chicken breast (or thigh), Peri Peri Cream, Onion, &Pepper. Method: Simply coat the chicken in your peri peri and seal, throw in the vegetables and cook through. Add the cream to the pan and cook further until reduced with the peri peri. Serve with either rice, chips or any kind of potatoes and enjoy with a Jamaican beer or a rum based cocktail.

A beverage that definitely ticks that box is the classic Mojito so we got the team at Roots Restaurant to give us an insight into the ingredients that make this classic tipple such a hit! Ingredients: muddled lime, one shot of sugar, two shots of white rum, a hand full of fresh mint, crushed ice, then churned together to mix the ingredients, add more crushed ice then top with soda water, garnish with a sprig of mint and a wedge of lime.

Local Chef James Allcock provides a great twist on an Italian classic by giving it a British feel and an amazing addition of elderflower adds texture and a great floral heady flavour

B

uttermilk Pudding is a British twist on a Panna cotta which contains: 3 gelatine leaves, 250ml buttermilk, 250ml double cream, 1 vanilla pod - split lengthways, seeds scraped out & 25g caster sugar.

Method: For the buttermilk pudding, soak the gelatine leaves in a cold water until soft. Place the milk, cream, vanilla pod and seeds and sugar into a pan and bring to a simmer. Remove the vanilla pod - discard Squeeze water out of the gelatine leaves, add to the pan and take off the heat. Stir until the gelatine has dissolved - pass through sieve. Divide the mixture among four glass jars and leave to cool. Place into the fridge for at least an hour, until set. It’s much easier and nicer presentation in jars rather than faffing around trying to turn them out of moulds onto the plate.This is served with fresh local Keyingham strawberries And a crumble topping - 120g plain flour, 60g caster sugar, 60g unsalted butter at room temperature, cut into pieces. 190C oven - Mix flour and sugar in a bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour using your fingertips to make a light breadcrumb texture. Do not overmix Sprinkle mix evenly in a single layer on a lined baking tray and bake for 15 mins or until lightly coloured. Leave to cool and store in an airtight container - also a useful method for a crumble to ensure crispness and ease of use - you can stew fruit separately and top and serve individual

crumbles or sharing crumbles with this topping. Also served with fresh basil and a deep fried wild village elderflower in a tempura batter Tempura: 100g corn flour, 150g plain flour, 10g baking powder, enough iced sparkling water or soda water to make batter - thick enough to coat your finger. Fry on a high heat 180 in a deep fat fryer until crisp . Served in a summer style currently at the Nancy inn in Church St, Burton Pidsea, Hull HU12 9AU, 01964 671117

T

here is an indescribable feeling I get every time I see a Ferrari in the flesh, it is almost as if the entire world suddenly falls silent around me and for a split second life seemingly stops in its tracks to acknowledge and respect what lay before it. There seems to be an equal level of appreciation from inside the cockpit, as the driver delicately balances the throttle, knowing that just the slightest amount of increased pressure will release a vicious rumble of thunder. This balance of awe inspiring beauty and bone shuddering brutality is something that Ferrari have once again encapsulated with the 488 Spider, which feels almost like a mad scientific experiment combining the DNA of Charlize Theron and Mike Tyson. The result of this crazy concoction is a simply mindblowing piece of engineering, a turbocharged 3.9 litre V8 plucked straight out of the GTB thumps out 660 BHP at 8000 RPM and will fire you from 0-60mph in less than 3 seconds, before going onto headbutt the laws of physics by reaching a top speed of 203mph. That is faster than most commercial aircraft during takeoff...without a roof! This makes the 488 Spider the fastest mid-engine convertible Ferrari have ever produced. I therefore suggest that if you have a cool £200,000 sat in your bank account, a strong stomach and little care for both your hair or facial construction then you couldn’t go far wrong spending your hard earned cash on this ridiculous piece of mechanical mastery - just be prepared there is a thunderstorm waiting under your right foot. o you’ve read all about the Ferrari 488 Spider, and sure you’d love a bit of flat-plane crank V8 to lend the soundtrack to your hazy summer evenings on the roads of East Yorkshire. But if you must aim a bit lower, don’t worry – there’s plenty to aim at.

Wait, don’t turn the page – I’m serious! Sure, the Street KA might not immediately spring to mind as a worthy replacement for your pinup Ferrari as the roadster of choice, but it is a roadster, and there’s plenty of choice. The 1.6 litre Duratec engine’s 8-valve soundtrack is hardly a thriller, but it is mated to a notchy, sporty feeling gearbox, and does like a few revs winding on. So if you close your eyes and concentrate really hard…etc. No, it’s not pick of the bunch when it comes to roadsters, but that’s about the only thing keeping prices so low at the minute. £1,200 – 1,500 will get you a decent example. It’ll be cheap to maintain, fun to drive, and if you’re struggling with the ‘street’ cred, just remember it was a scantily-clad Kylie Minogue who launched the Street KA. Need I say anymore?

You don’t need to be a Premier League footballer to enjoy the sun from behind the wheel of a Porsche convertible. Nor do you need to be married to one, despite what your mates might tell you when you dare to mention the ‘B’ word down the pub. The Porsche Boxster might be known as the ‘poor man’s Porsche’ in some circles, but none of those circles hold any weight with me – it’s a driver’s car, and what’s more if you pick wisely, it’s a potential low-lying investment opportunity, too. With prices ranging wildly, you could pick up a cheap early car for as little as £3,000. But avoiding the troublesome 2.5 litre engine in the first examples, you need to be budgeting a more realistic, but still palatable £6,000 for a decent 2.7 or 3.2 flat six engine car, a few years into production.

Mazda MX5 The archetypal ‘hairdresser’s car’, perhaps. But if you’ve ever driven a Mazda MX5 on a good bit of road, you’ll understand why hairdressers should rightly command some respect for choosing such an accomplished car to park in their pigeon hole. Car history has the MX5 poetically pegged as the successor to the MG Midget, and when a car spans as many decades as Mazda’s cash cow roadster, you know they’ve hit upon something. Let’s shoe-horn the vast choice of versions into three main variants; the early Mk1, the middle Mk2, and the latest generation Mk3/4 cars, I’d go for the latter. You can however pick an early one up for a few hundred quid – but you’ll need to watch for rust issues, and the interiors and hoods haven’t always faired that well. he brains (and the brawn) behind Marie Clare Hair & Beauty has spoken exclusively to LOCO Magazine about how she runs her business. We wanted to find out how Abbie Jackson came to be the owner of this unique salon in the heart of Hull city centre. Abbie tells us why she chose hair and beauty, how she gained her experience and what it takes to be the Creative Director of your very own business. First of all, let me point out that Abbie was actually rather reluctant to talk about herself and wanted to focus mostly on Marie Clare Hair & Beauty – out of sheer modesty in truth. However, I had to tell her that we are all just as interested in her story as we are the story of Marie Clare Salon, I’m afraid. So, I’ll start with a little background on Abbie…

At the age of 13 the budding stylist entered the world of hair and beauty, starting out as a Saturday girl – not dissimilar to many who enter this industry at an early age. Still, it was Abbie’s determination and passion that set her apart from the competition, resulting in an opportunity to train and work with hair heavyweights Toni&Guy. Naturally this was an invaluable experience whilst honing her skills at an early stage in her career; which is something that Abbie pointed out immediately during our interview: “This was possibly the most valuable first steps of my career. It was the best start I could have asked for as a trainee, with some of the best in the industry both in hairdressing and business. It gave me a great insight into working in a professional environment and taught me how important it is to stay ahead of the game.” And ahead of the game she stayed. By working on London Fashion Week, Abbie again learned

valuable lessons whilst working at one of the biggest hair show events in the world. Following this came Abbie’s hair styling qualifications to support her already extensive experience. A Colour Specialist and a Master Colour Expert qualification further added to the foundation that the budding business owner was building for herself; she decided to take the plunge, in pursuing her very own salon. Eight years ago, with the help of business partner ‘David’ Marie Clare Hair & Beauty was initiated in Hull city centre, with the hope of bringing not just a great salon but a ‘great hairdressing experience’ to the area. After starting with just two members of staff, Abbie steadily grew the team to a solid party of fifteen today. The journey from then to now has certainly not being easy as Abbie was quick to admit, but it was all worth it, of course:

However refurbishing a Grade II listed building whilst running a business and working a full client list, with an unrealistic timescale and budget was maybe something that I could have thought through a little more – though we got through it, and I am very proud of where we have managed to get to now”. As Abbie mentioned, the building that houses Marie Clare Hair & Beauty is a Grade II listed building set in the heart of Hull’s city centre. This alone gives the business an edge over competition – I mean, I for one have never had my hair cut in a Grade II listed building. The setting is quite stunning in all honesty. It’s modern décor sits alongside a structure that 3 4 | L O C O | J U LY 2 0 1 6

encapsulates Hull’s heritage perfectly, though I must admit, it isn’t where you’d expect to find a salon (which I quite like). As you may have guessed, Abbie is an ambitious lady. She has built up the business from nothing and now boasts one of, if not the most impressive salon in the Hull area. Yet, there are still some things that the owner of Marie Clare Hair & Beauty still has her sights on. “It has given me great pleasure to develop and train young people from the area and see them grow and learn as I did, one of my goals is to have a Marie Clare academy, to develop local talent. That’s one of my main ambitions now.” I think it’s safe to say, that through all the hard work, passion and commitment that is consistantly being invested into this ever growing Salon we can expect some very exciting prospects from Abbie and the Marie Clare team in years to come, don’t you?

YOU BOY! SeeGold Productions bring YOU BOY to East Riding Theatre on Friday 8th July as part of a UK Tour, with writer Joshua Meredith classing this as a ‘homecoming’ event. LOCO Editor Tom Horner caught up with the Hull born playwright to find out what we can expect from this highly anticipated production.

J

oshua Meredith is no stranger to the stage, having graduated from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts with flying colours. Although Joshua has Liverpool to thank for his education and theatre experience, he has Hull and Beverley to thank for his inspiration. “The whole thing isn’t based on my time at school in Beverley, but it references it heavily. It’s a completely made up story but throughout that it uses a lot of real and honest experiences to tell that story and to flesh it out and make it real. So it’s about two lads, two lads growing up together and living out of each other’s pockets, they’re adopted brothers and they’re both at the same school, in the same year, which is an all boys school. It’s not supposed to be the school that I went to but because I’ve used experiences from that school, to somebody who went their, it would seem like it is. There’s no mention of the name, the school itself or anything but there is mention of another school and a couple of my old teachers, which I guess is a little nod to anyone local who would perhaps understand.” Clearly, SeeGold Productions’ visit to Beverley will be a date that holds special significance for more than one reason – but with this comes a little added pressure for Josh. “I’m a little apprehensive, just due to the fact that I’m kind of putting myself on the line because I’m putting my thoughts and feelings out to people in my home town. So if

it’s poorly received, it’s somewhere that I’ve got firm roots down and I can’t just never visit again. I’ve spoken to people and gave out some flyers the other day, put some posters up and spoke to some old faces, some people who I haven’t seen for a while and a lot of people said that they hadn’t been to East Riding Theatre yet, so I’m hoping it brings some more faces along. I am really looking forward to it, I’m looking forward to seeing what the response is and especially from people who are familiar with the references in the play. It kind of feels like its on home turf, but we’ll have to wait and see – the jury’s still out.” All in all, Joshua is keen to build a reputation for himself and SeeGold in an area that is special to him. Having spent so much time away from home on Merseyside, the first port of call other than Liverpool would obviously be where it all started. Beverley and East Riding Theatre is the perfect setting to do this in, as Josh explains his main aims moving forward from this exclusive performance in July: “What we’re trying to get out of this show is to just start building a reputation as a company. We’re looking to generate some interest really and get people excited about us and what we’re doing and the stories that we want to tell. We want to get the ball rolling with a bang and get off to a good start. Debbie is a qualified member of the Master Photographers Association and the British Institute of Professional Photography with a true passion for her work. The fantastic array of shots captured were of the bride and groom, as well as the bridesmaids and loved ones who celebrated with the happy couple. Jessica, a Project Manager at Paragon HDX Limited and Adam, a Royal Engineer. The day was shot beautifully with memories created for a lifetime with hair & make-up for both the Bride and the Bridesmaids provided by Alexander’s Hair & Beauty, 26 Wilson Street Café Bar also provided a champagne breakfast in Alexander’s whilst the hair and make-up was taking place, and Samantha’s on Chanterlands Avenue both provided and altered the brides and the bridesmaid’s dresses. On the event Jessica Cooper says “Debbie and her team were exceptional with the planning before, during and after our wedding. We had a location shoot before the wedding, which really helped Adam and myself to feel comfortable in front of the camera, and a pre wedding consultation ensured every photo we wanted to capture.. Debbie and her team knew exactly what they were doing and put us all at ease throughout the day. The real treat came after the wedding with her after-care service; the way she presented the pictures meant we could relive the day again! I’m a firm believer in trying natural and organic treatments first for improving the skin texture and appearance, such as PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) with micro needling.” So there you have it. This state of the art facility is situated on the first floor, whilst boasting views out to Flamborough Head that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else in the area. The gym area is fully equipped with over 100 stations to fulfil your every fitness need; whether this be cardio or weight training. As well as the Tone Zone itself, the gym sits alongside fitness studios ready for all types of classes with a MyRide studio, squash courts and a sports hall also available if you’d rather burn your calories during a game of badminton, football or even basketball. To cool down and relax after all this hard work, we have the Health Suite. This section of the centre is all about relaxation and reinvigoration; with a sauna, Jacuzzi and a steam room available. The TOURIST

Walk through the doors of East Riding Leisure, Bridlington and you’ll find yourself on ‘The Street’ running through the heart of the centre. This gives you a view of 80% of all facilities in the building and is the focal point of this impressive centre. So now, we’ll kick things off with the Splash Zone. Fully equipped with two interactive slides (Aqua Smash and Slide Champ) as well as an interactive water-play structure, a Super Splash Tip Bucket and water jets; this corner of the centre is geared up for a day out with the kids. Aqua Smash and Slide Champ are in place to test you whilst you play, with touch ready sensors dotted around the slide – competitive stuff if you’re with a group of friends. Still, if it’s a relaxing few lengths you’re looking for, there is also a 25m pool, together with a learning pool fitted with a moveable floor with a maximum depth of 2m. Next, we have the Clip ‘n Climb. A series of climbing based games and activities suitable for all above the age of four. This runs through the centre of the complex, alongside The Street and once you’re hoisted up it makes for a pretty impressive viewpoint of the pool, the gym and the sea. Along with these activities, The Street also boasts Café Vibe. This chill-out spot can seat up to 80 people, so if you need a rest or a bite to eat after sampling the other facilities, then this is your stop.

I believe that the impact will be long lasting for those businesses who get involved proactively. There are so many ways that businesses can be part of The City of Culture apart from the obvious I’m hearing already that lots of local firms are signing their staff up to the volunteer schemes

I will have to be politically correct in my answer - as there are 130 inspirational members of For Entrepreneurs and I can’t choose just one!! So looking back in Hull’s Business history, I will choose Thomas Ferens. His career with Reckitts spanned 61 years—from his initial employment as a confid shorthand clerk until his death, as chairman, in 1930. he wasn’t one for the limelight but achieved so much both in business and as a philanthropist

What are your words of wisdom to those who are thinking of starting a business in the Hull & Humber region?

If you have a good idea, a positive attitude and are willing to take a risk to achieve your dreams, then now is a great time to start! This area is definitely on the up!
