In 2017 and 2018, the City received two, initial grants to plan and begin implementation of a project to provide additional academic support to students, enlisting the help of AmeriCorps members in national service. With renewed funding in 2019, the City welcomed its first five AmeriCorps members, serving as tutors in community after school programs. And, in 2020, the City and STAR House will resume the effort with a grant award up to $77,099 and a continued focus on early literacy proficiency for participating students, as well as homework support, assistance with STEM activities, and

health and wellness programming. The City contributes additional funds annually to help facilitate the community-based project, with this year’s commitment up to $43,282. A core program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps is a network of local, state and national service programs that connects more than 75,000 Americans to meet community needs in areas such as education, the environment, public safety and health. AmeriCorps works with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and its Commission for Service and Volunteerism to afford service opportunities statewide. The City of Roswell was the first organization to receive AmeriCorps State funding in the North Fulton area in 2017, supporting national service at the local level.

What Does the Crystal Ball Predict for the Roswell Real Estate Market?

NEW LISTINGS

BY MICHELLE KING SLATER As a top Realtor for the area, it is imperative I study the new listings, closings and pendings daily to give my clients the most current information. This practice

ensures my buyers do not overpay and my sellers receive top dollar. There is no crystal ball; Realtors do, however, look at certain factors outside of real estate to predict the future as accurately as possible. Currently, there are 1.4 months of inventory in Roswell. Simply put, if nothing else came

on the market tomorrow, the houses currently for sale would be sold within 1.4 months. This low level of inventory creates a HOT seller’s market. When clients follow the staging and pricing advice I provide, my listings sell on average in 7 days! There are several scenarios that could occur this winter and change the

trajectory of real estate in any of three directions. What if a vaccine is approved for COVID-19? What if another wave of COVID-19 cases pop up and everything shuts down again? What if nothing changes with COVID-19 and we gradually stay the course? The data currently shows the hardest people hit are those working in the hospitality

industry. This means folks working in convention centers, restaurants, hotels and airlines, to name a few, are devasted by declining sales and shuttered doors. If we don’t see improvements in the hospitality industry soon, the trickle-down effect may result in increased foreclosures and more listing inventory. Only time will tell. BEAR CLAW VINEYARDS is located in Blue Ridge, Georgia, a place known for its breathtaking mountain views, pristine bubbling springs, scenic hikes, and amazing fishing and wildlife. It is the perfect destination to slow down, relax, and reconnect with yourself and those you love. Bear Claw is a real vineyard with a fully functioning winery on site. They are proud to produce and bottle their own wine on site and be 100 percent female-owned by Michelle “Mick” Swim. After extensive research on the land, it was discovered that this location was prime to grow grapes based not only on geography but based on the rich “alluvial plain soil” Bear Claw was blessed with. At 1,832 feet above sea level, with a cool mountain breeze and rich, unique soils, the land was ideal to produce high quality wine. Therefore, Bear Claw Vineyards was created on the foundation of top quality wine and a soothing and relaxing aesthetic. To share the beauty of the land with others seeking rest, relaxation, and restoration the Treehouse Guys from the DIY network came out and built a treehouse on the property. Guests continue to revisit the treehouse as a nightly rental. Make plans to head up to North Georgia one weekend and enjoy the beauty of Blue Ridge and Bear Claw’s delicious and refreshing wine. In Dahlonega, not only have Blair Housley and Etowah Meadery racked up over two-dozen awards for their incredible honey wine, they are now the only winery in the state of Georgia to have created the first farm winery and brewery combination.

ETOWAH MEADERY INTRODUCES THE DAHLONEGA BREWERY. NO OTHER WINERY OR BREWERY IN THE STATE MAKES BOTH WINE AND BEER IN THE SAME FACILITY AND SERVES IT AT THE SAME TIME. Etowah Meadery is best known and awarded for its ancient, but new, libation called mead. Classic mead has a warm, sweet, rich flavor and usually over 12 percent alcohol. It is yet another thing to add to the long list for which we should thank the honeybees, our planet’s best bugs. Housley and Co. have come up with a series of what they call “session meads,” canned, carbonated beverages with about 6 percent alcohol and a deep bench of flavors in the mix. But honey is not the only ingredient in mead. Sometimes the more popular wines are also made with various fruits and spices, many of which have won Blair multiple awards in both mead and beer creations. One of Blair’s fall favorites is called Figgy Pudding, an uncarbonated mix of fig mead ( from Figs grown on his farm) and fall spices that are barrel aged. Customers call it

“Christmas in a glass.” If you enjoy beginning your day with a pumpkin spice latte, you will love finishing your evening with a glass of fig-infused Christmas spirit. Also back this Fall is Blair’s classic Granny’s Apple Pie. Made with apples and spices, Granny’s Apple Pie is a session style mead remarkably similar to a cider, and is available both on tap as well as in cans to take home with you. On the brewery side, The Dahlonega Brewery, which started brewing in late summer will have several beers available by mid-October. In addition to those, they will also have the beers that you would expect. “Little Buzzer” their Gold Mining IPA is uniquely named for Dahlonega’s Little Buzzard Mountain.

but the style of beer Blair would most like to the brewery to become best known for is called Braggot, a hybrid of mead and beer that few, if any, other breweries in Georgia are doing. More than worth the scenic drive this Fall, Etowah Meadery and The Dahlonega Brewery welcome Roswell’s wine and beer lovers. Live music, food trucks and their newly expanded, ample covered outdoor patio and fire pit are waiting to greet you. www.etowahmeadery.com

“Dahlonega Nugget Lager” and “Boggs Creek Oatmeal Stout” are two other unique offerings named after things that Dahlonega is famous for. There will be many more, @roswellmagazine

NESTLED IN THE NORTH GEORGIA MOUNTAINS IN DAHLONEGA, THREE RANGERS BREWING CO. OPENED A SMALL CRAFT BREWERY, LOCATED AT 3003 MORRISON MOORE PARKWAY EAST, AND SHARES A SPACE WITH ETOWAH MEADERY AND THE DAHLONEGA BREWERY.

Art Attaway co-owns the Three Rangers Brewing Co. with Blair Housley, who owns Etowah Meadery and The Dahlonega Brewery. Three Rangers launched with a lineup of six brews including a porter, IPA, pale ale, double IPA, wheat ale and lager. Attaway said each beer has an Army Ranger-inspired name like “Pathfinder,” “Jump Master” or “Door Kicker.” 20 - myroswellmagazine.com

To give back to the Ranger community, Attaway said the brewery intends to redirect 20 percent of its profits to several Army Ranger-supporting organizations like the Three Rangers Foundation, Darby Project and GallantFew, all of which help veterans transition from military service to civilian life. The name, “Three Rangers” represents U.S. Army Rangers’ past, present and future; we honor the past, support the present and assure the legacy for future Rangers.

Both co-owners of the brewery are veterans. Attaway served as a U.S. Army Ranger for 12 years and Housley served in the U.S. Air Force for six years. There are 10 operating Army Ranger units, and eight are in Georgia. Rangers are a Georgia story. It was easy to start Three Rangers Brewing inside Etowah Meadery; Housley was already starting The Dahlonega Brewery and was in the process of prepping and ordering the brew tanks. Three Rangers will begin distributing its beer in Georgia in middle of 2021, then grow its reach throughout the Southeast. For now, they welcome people to stop by the brewery and support Army Ranger veterans by drinking tasty beer or a unique mead. www.etowahmeadery.com facebook.com/threerangersbrewing

TO THINE OWN SELF CARE BE TRUE

Publisher's Post

LETTER FROM THE

Signature Body Oil Lilly Sage Apothecary www.lillysageapothecary.com

Editorial & Creative Director

H

HEY, ROSWELL... HOW ARE YOU? And be totally honest – are you hanging in there, or are you hanging by a thread? We are constantly being reminded, consciously or not, that we have to keep going, keep grinding, keep pushing to maintain our livelihoods. We are expected to resume business as usual, if only to keep our heads above water, but we all know things are still not “as usual.” As the days drag on and the weeks fly by, the path of least resistance is not what you’d expect – it’s much easier to get swept up in responsibilities outside ourselves than it is to stop, drop and nap. "An object in motion stays in motion," but people are a different story. Each of us has unique limits, and it’s in our best interest not to push them. Our advice? Give yourself a break before your body does it for you. Self-care should be the first on your list of priorities. You're there for everyone else, so remember to be there for yourself. After all, you can't pour from an empty cup! Self-care is more than a bimonthly bubble bath and a glass of wine; it requires routine. Even then, staying hydrated and and well-rested are just basics. Life is tough right now, and we need a little more TLC "than usual." Call in sick to catch up on sleep. Turn your phone on airplane mode and go “screenless” for an entire day. Clear your schedule and book a day at the spa (When you do, we recommend the whole enchilada – facial, massage, aromatherapy, mud wrap, body polish, the works!).

Don't think of self-care as a "treat," but rather a long-term regimen to keep you feeling good and functioning like a welloiled machine. In a city well-known for its entrepreneurs, the thought of going off the grid (even temporarily) might make us grip our phones a little bit tighter... Instead of brushing off the idea completely, let's adopt self-care as a lifestyle. Let's learn to enjoy life guilt-free, and not take ourselves so seriously. Let's look for ways to incorporate stress relief into our busy schedules. Remember, the optimal worklife balance includes plenty of F-U-N! Regardless of what you consider self-care, Roswell offers a rich variety of opportunities to relax and enjoy yourself. Whether you're floating down the Chattahoochee; exploring the menu at a new restaurant on Canton Street; hiking the Vickery Creek trail; kicking back for a show at Lucky's LIVE! Backyard; brewery-hopping between Gate City and Variant with your coworkers; or trying your hand at all the Summer Sips, there is no shortage of self-care (or fun) to be had in our city. Considering that's the shortlist, we have no excuse not to relax in Roswell.

MARTY BERNING On the passing of Eddie Van Halen: “I knew this day would eventually come, but didn't think it would be so soon. I can't believe it. Eddie Van Halen has passed. I can barely type this. Everybody knows he was my favorite guitarist of all time. When I heard my first cassettes of Van Halen in 7th grade, it blew me away and changed my life. He combined so many styles into a rock context. Eddie ruled the 80s. Everybody was trying to do his thing. He was an innovator of guitar techniques, guitar construction and tone. Most guitar players remember where they were the first time they heard him, or heard "Eruption." His sound and technique were new and powerful and so unique. Instantly recognizable. I'm still disappointed that Van Halen broke up so early in their career. They could have made so much more great music than they did. Thank you, God for bringing Eddie into this world. I'm so sad that he is gone. Nobody will every play it like he did.”

Q&A w/ TORI PATER When did you start playing? TORI: I started playing out in 1990 in Athens, Ga. Almost all covers in acoustic and full band settings. I will always play music. You attended Crestwood High School in Roswell and then UGA, but where did you go next? TORI: I moved to Chicago in 1993-2000 playing mostly originals.I will always write music. Later I moved to Colorado (2001-2019), playing originals and covers for anyone and everyone. Where else have you played? Don’t name them all lol! TORI: I’ve played Red Rocks, the Fillmore Auditorium, the Ogden Theater, Boulder/Fox theaters and pretty much every restaurant in Colorado. What are you thoughts about playing live music? TORI: I prefer the acoustic guitar and whiskey. My favorite thing to do is play music I’ve never played, with people I’ve never played with. What is your genre? TORI: Some say I’m Bluesy, some say Funky, I say Funky-Bluesy.

Is relief in sight for your

‘pandemic anxiety’?

CBD Store & More opened in historic Roswell in April, despite the COVID19 pandemic because they knew their products would be needed now more than ever. BY REGINA BARKLEY

W

hen I first met Kevin Quirk in early January at a Roswell Next event held at Rock ‘N’ Taco, I told him I was curious about hemp-derived cannabidiol (or “CBD” as it is most commonly known) and its uses; however, not curious enough to go out of my way to seek more information. This changed when I started a conversation with Kevin, the new proprietor of CBD Store and More on Canton Street, a hometown provider of high-quality CBD products. Naturally, I took the opportunity to ask my questions from someone who’s an expert on the subject. What exactly is CBD? What are the side effects? How long does it take to work? How will I know it’s working? How do I determine my dosage? He thoroughly – and patiently – explained the latest research and benefits associated with CBD before summarizing, “It affects each in-

dividual differently.” CBD may help one person by alleviating anxiety, another by diminishing symptoms of PTSD, or another by aiding in a better night’s sleep. A friend of mine told me that his joint and arthritis pain has completely disappeared since he began taking CBD; and another good friend with MS (multiple sclerosis) said CBD has calmed her tremors. It’s the same thing medical doctors say when prescribing medicine, “It affects each individual differently.” That’s the only answer that makes any sense to me anyway. I took that as a challenge, a great mystery that needed to be solved to find out ‘if ’ and/or ‘how’ it might help me. I purchased my first product – a CBD-infused [salve/lotion] – and rubbed it into the muscles in my shoulders and neck for some relief. I don’t know why I was surprised when it worked

FREQUENTLY ASKED

questions

WHAT IS CBD?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabis plant. It’s a naturally occurring substance that’s used in a variety of products. Unlike its tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it’s does not give you the “high” that has been traditionally associated with cannabis. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBD & THC?

The plant Cannabis sativa has two primary species, hemp and marijuana. Both contain CBD, but there’s a much higher percentage in hemp, which also has very low (less than 0.3%) levels of THC compared to marijuana.

Broad spectrum CBD is a mix between Full Spectrum CBD and CBD Isolate. Like Full Spectrum CBD, the other compounds found within the plant are preserved in the extract; however, like CBD Isolate, THC is completely removed. Because Broad Spectrum CBD contains multiple cannabinoids, it can deliver the enhanced benefits of the “entourage effect,” without the risk of psychoactive effects of THC.

WHAT ARE THE VARIANTS OF CBD?

CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD, which is produced by removing all other compounds found in the plant including terpenes, flavonoids, plant parts, and other cannabinoids. CBD Isolate is typically extracted from Hemp, due to its low to non-existent THC-content.

There are three different types of CBD: Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum and Isolate.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CBD?

Full spectrum CBD is an extract that contains all compounds found naturally occurring in the cannabis plant including cannabinoids, terpenes, and essential oils which work together to magnify the therapeutic benefits of each individual cannabinoid. This is commonly referred to as the “entourage effect“.

Research is ongoing into the various applications of CBD and hemp products. We encourage our customers to research the potential benefits of CBD for themselves as well as visit our store to experience products which might be right for their lifestyle.

FREQUENTLY UN-ASKED

questions

WILL IT GET ME ‘HIGH’?

No. CBD will not get you high nor distort your mind because there is no THC in CBD. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the element in the cannabis that’s psychoactive. CBD is a different, naturally occurring compound that is completely nonpsychoactive, according to CBD Origin. Instead, it delivers healing properties of the plant without the negative effects of getting you high. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Even among people who used high doses of CBD, many smallscale studies have shown that adults tolerate a wide range of doses well. However, the most common side effect, according to Medical News Today, is tiredness, as well as some reports of diarrhea and changes in appetite or weight. It can take

anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours before the effects of CBD can be felt. DO I HAVE TO BE 18 TO PURCHASE CBD?

As mentioned above, without THC, CBD is available at countless places in person and online. A person who has access is allowed to purchase. However, Green Entrepreneurs listed a couple of best practices suggested by industry experts when doing so: Purchase from providers that have independent, third-party testing. ALSO, inquire about whether the CBD is made full-spectrum or isolate. Full-spectrum contains more compounds and nutrients.

It’s

healthy for your body to have some body fat. After all, fat can provide fuel for the muscles and brain, but all fat is not created equal. The fat you want to watch out for is visceral fat. This is the fat that is located in the abdominal cavity near vital organs such as the liver, stomach, and intestines. Having too much visceral fat can increase the chances of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

42 - myroswellmagazine.com

In order to combat the amount of excessive fat on the body there needs to be a balance with exercise and nutrition. Combine aerobic and strength training exercises to get the most out of your weight loss. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a great example of aerobic and anaerobic systems being combined to blast body fat away. Working hard for a short amount of time and keeping your rest to a minimum will turn your body into a caloric burner. You can keep it simple with body weight exercises

or throw in some free weights. For instance performing body weight squats for 30 seconds and resting for 15s. Want to take it up a notch throw in a kettlebell with the squat and really get your sweat on! Losing fat doesn’t have to be boring and it can seem hard but if you exercise at least 5 hours a week (one NETFLIX series show a day). Eat clean whole foods (less ingredients the better) and don’t go overboard with diets, and stay consistent you will see that fat decrease.

Like our beautiful campus that beckons you to enjoy the walking trails, gardens, putting green and dog park in every season. Or our activities schedule that features events to challenge and nurture mind, body and spirit all year round. We are truly a community for all seasons…even a season of life that is uncertain. We have protocols in place to protect the health and safety of all who live and work here, in every situation. Our nonprofit status as a Life Plan Community ensures that our residents can live independently and actively with the security of knowing their financial assets are protected and the peace of mind that, if ever needed, they have guaranteed access to a continuum of care. We continuously create an environment that encourages our residents to be healthy and happy, and thrive in every season of life. You’re invited to learn more about all of the aspects that make St. George Village a retirement community for all seasons, even in times of uncertainty. Sterling Estates Senior Living Community Winner: Best of Cobb "Assisted Living Community" 2019 & 2020

Sterling Estates of East Cobb is, quite literally, a living community – where seniors are empowered and enabled to maintain a healthy, holistic lifestyle and a desired level of independence. No stone was left unturned by the local owners/operators who designed a 10-acre campus worthy of their own loved ones. Designed with intention, this beautiful independent and assisted living neighborhood community with both cottages and apartments blends seamlessly with local landscape and architecture, resulting in a “look” that feels like home. “We wanted this to be a neighborhood first, that happened to have senior services,” says Partner Mike Brown. “In order to do that, you must have large acreage, you had to have expansive porches, patios, courtyards and sidewalks throughout. You must have different common places for people to go and to socialize. And now with the Covid-19 pandemic these amenities have become even more important to have for our residents and their families. We’re glad we built the community with all these features in place.”

At Sterling Estates, we can practice “social distancing” and not be socially isolated from each other. Residents are encouraged to be active and engaged, albeit six feet apart and with masks when inside the community’s common spaces, during this pandemic time. The staff uses the appropriate PPE at all times in their interactions with residents. Every precaution is being taken, but with such ample room, there remains a wealth of opportunities for enrichment and interaction with fellow residents at a responsible distance. These include; outside in the courtyard, on the porches and patios, or in the oversized, fine-dining room, where tables have been spread out and all can be served comfortably apart, or in the spacious activity room. While the pandemic persists, family visits continue and are currently taking place outside on the porches, patios and courtyards. On inclement days, family visits will take place in our comfortably furnished Legacy Room which has its own private entrance. The room has its own air filtration system specifically designed to clean the air on a continual basis.

The indoor heated swimming pool continues to be used regularly by residents but with safe limits on the number of residents in the pool at one time. High-risk activities such as grocery or supplies shopping are delegated to staff members who help in the delivery by carefully disinfecting items to reduce unnecessary exposure, and then dropping the groceries off at residents’ cottage or apartment.

With older adults being disproportionately at risk for COVID-19, Sterling has bolstered a transparent line of communication to keep residents and their families comforted and informed of every change. On warm weather days, fitness classes transition outdoors, are limited to a smaller number of residents in each class, and are properly spaced to ensure the safety of all participants. A number of these classes are recorded on video and shared, giving people the option to participate in the comfort of their own living rooms. With the cool weather fast approaching, on inclement days, our large, indoor Wellness area affords us the ability to spread out and still safely conduct and participate in small group exercise classes.

Assisted & Independent Living

These circumstances only highlight “the care and affection our staff has for the people who live here, and the care and affection that the residents have for the staff,” according to Brown. “The appreciation that the families have, the level of confidence that they express to us knowing their parents are safe, means the world to us.” At Sterling Estates of East Cobb, life is celebrated; relationships with family, friends and neighbors are valued; and residents are staying socially engaged and Sterling Strong. 10 Lucky Years! By Danielle Bartling

L

ucky’s Burger and Brew in Roswell’s owners - Ernie and Diane Geyer’s - first Lucky’s location opened in 2010. In the last 10 years, Lucky’s-Roswell has become part of the culture of Roswell, and the social-distance dining destination in our community. Today, Ernie owns three dog-friendly restaurants, and says, “When the pandemic hit, we were very thankful and fortunate to have just renovated; and now own Roswell’s largest outside artificial turf venue, furnished with picnic tables, a live stage, and swings along with our 4 season doghouse.”

This has been an unusual year for all of Roswell’s restaurants. Managing Partner Ted Lescher held the 10-year anniversary party on the weekend of August 28-29, 2020 as a companion to their annual ‘End of Summer Bash.’ The festivities kicked off on Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and Roswell Rotary, followed by a performance by East & Ward on Lucky’s LIVE! Stage. Saturday’s main event was sponsored by Gate City Brewing, and featured 40Hz on stage. Between sets, Ernie hosted the annual 2nd Place Cutest Dog Contest (Lucky himself takes first place every year, of course), and proceeds from the contest benefited Golden Retriever Rescue of Atlanta. The most-liked, a.k.a. most-voted, dogs on Lucky’s Facebook paraded in front of the stage before the winner and runner-ups were chosen by the four judges: Councilman Matt Judy; Michelle Slater, the Red Diva Realtor; Dr. Marcus Smith from Chattahoochee Animal

Clinic; and Marie Cole from GRRA. Guests brought their own picnic blankets and chairs to enjoy the evening safely outdoors with the right precautions in place. “The most important thing,” said Lescher, “was making sure that our customers were confident, and knew they were safe.” It was apparent to us that the staff at Lucky’s takes COVID-19 protocols very seriously. They were meticulous about sanitizing, wearing masks and keeping the seating chart in line with the CDC’s physical distance recommendations.

THE SEVEN SONS (www.sevensonsmusic.com) Formed as a pickup band in Roswell in 2011 with four friends who met on the baseball field as dads coaching their sons’ team. Between them, they have seven sons.Their children were in school and played youth sports with each other; and the four spent a lot of time talking about music and sports. One simple jam session got them hooked and ‘The Sons’ have been delivering their high-energy style to local breweries, pubs and restaurants ever since. Rooted in classic and progressive rock music, the band performs at local Atlanta venues and for corporate events. They’re influenced by a variety of genres ranging from the driving hard rock bands of the ‘70s to the alternative folk rock of today. Ever-evolving, ‘The Sons’ pepper in some original work that fits tightly within the genres offered. Bill Houck, owner of Houck’s Grille raves, “The Seven Sons always bring a raw and inspired brand of music to my listening room – no one goes home from their shows unsatisfied!” Band members include Nick Starr (guitar), Jared Young (drums), Tim Christner (guitar), Tony Walsh (guitar/vocals) and Ron Walker.

BIRDTALKER (www.birdtalkermusic.com) Birdtalker is made up of Zack and Dani Green, Andy Hubright, Brian Seligman, and Jesse Baker. Zack and Dani were married in 2012 and soon after their wedding tried writing a couple songs together. Andy, a talented drummer friend, started beating on stuff while Zack and Dani played them., and it sounded good. While these 3 were playing the songs at Shakespeare in the Park one August afternoon, Brian

64 - myroswellmagazine.com

became interested in adding his immense talent to the mix as well and began playing along with mandolin and guitar. It sounded even better. Soon, another talented friend and fan, Jesse, began lending his bass sounds to the band. It is the combination of each member's specific offerings that gives Birdtalker its life and sounds. Find their first album ‘ONE’ in the normal places.

(www.adam-klein.com) ADAM KLEIN & THE WILDFIRES An Atlanta-via-Athens, GA -based singer/songwriter troubadour, Adam Klein’s music blends Americana, rustic country folk, folk-rock, and West African Mande music. He solo/duo, with his band, Adam Klein & The Wild Fires, or with his American roots-meets-West-African-roots project under his Peace Corps name in Mali, Lassine Kouyate. For Low Flyin’ Planes, his seventh album, Klein teamed up again with his longtime producer Bronson Tew at Dial Back Sound. “He’s a close friend and a genius engineer and producer whose role in shaping the sounds and textures of these records and bringing my songs to life can’t be overstated. ’You set them up; I’ll knock them down’, he’s said about our musical partnership. And it’s true- these albums are just as much his handiwork as they are mine,” Adam explained. The other two albums in this so-called trilogy include 2013’s Sky Blue DeVille and the 2015 release Archer’s Arrow. “To me, Low Flyin’ Planes is the sonic follow-up to Sky Blue DeVille. I think it’s a natural progression.”

GEORGIA SOUL COUNCIL (www.facebook.com/georgiasoulcouncil) In 2010, this band originally came together in Atlanta as the backing unit for singer Otis Redding III. The sound was old-school and funky modern soul. Later, they evolved into more jazz elements, but kept their Southern roots and taut, danceable compositions. Weaving jazzfunk and Afrobeat into their sound, they

wrote and play individual solos, chanted vocals and interlocking grooves. They toured the Southeast as an opening act for Antibalas, Lee Fields & the Expressions, Rebirth Brass Band and many more. In 2013, their debut album, Thickens Upon Standing, was released to critical acclaim, and in 2017, ‘Whats for Breakfast’, their first full length vinyl LP, was released. @roswellmagazine

HEARD. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves... Strumbrush is playing Roswell Music’fest 2.0 on Oct. 17 at Thunder Road Music on Sloan Street in Roswell. Band members Foster Wells, Jack Pace, Tyler Sherman and Marshall Ogden graduated from Roswell and East Cobb High Schools within the last 2 or 3 years. The four met at Thunder Road, and that’s where they acquired a love for music. Owner Clyde Ogden had this written on the “About” page of Thunder Road’s Facebook page, and we stole it -- because it perfectly says what we want to say - he nails it.

(From Thunder Road’s “About” section on their FB page.)

Thunder Road Music Studios was founded on the revolutionary idea that the best way to teach people how to play and appreciate music is to immerse them in a unique, visually stimulating, creatively inspiring community of like-minded musicians and artists. From the very first month of lessons Thunder Road students become part of a community of musicians. There is something deeply mys-

66 - myroswellmagazine.com

terious about music. Think for a moment what life would be like without it. The world would be a mundane place; a quiet, monotonous and indeed far less beautiful place. Music is the perfect art and great equalizer. It doesn’t favor status or birthright. And these musicians, these poets and artists, these writers and dreamers… they are mankind’s gift to the world. And we’re honored to be part of teaching and inspiring the next generation.
