238 -170 — RM of Mount Hope Shop will be built With a vote of 238-170, a new shop is on the horizon in the RM of Mount Hope after the RM published yesterday’s referendum results this morning. December 9th, 2021 The vote breakdown the RM gave us showed clear divisions. Results from the Raymore YES 177-10 and Semans/Nokomis voting NO 155-38. The referendum was the second time a new shop was put to a vote by ratepayers. The first time a referendum stopped the building of the shop. This time the vote has gone the other way. It’s not the result that Wayne Hicks and the group against the RM building the shop were hoping for - “I’m not real happy about it. But we said that it went to the constituents, and they voted yes to build a new shop I guess that’s what would happen.” For Hicks, this is the end of the road for him opposing the new shop. But it may not be for others on the West side of the municipality as

some ratepayers in the West continue to be unhappy with the RM’s direction. But for Hicks, he said he is done. “I said I would do this, and I’ve done my part and I think I’m finished. I pretty much said that in the council chambers that if the ratepayers voted yes to build a new shop that I’d shut my mouth.” The ratepayers didn’t vote on one contentious issue- the building’s location. Some people want the shop to stay in its current location in Semans and those, including the Council, want it built in Raymore. Hicks believes the RM will build it in Raymore. “We don’t have much choice. They’ve made up their mind that it’s going to Raymore and I’m not going to fight that either.” Evan Doidge is a ratepayer who is supportive of the new shop. “I’m

The current RM Mount Hope shop building (right). Originally constructed in 1967.

all for it. At some point times have to change and we’ve got to move forward.” Doidge said he used to work for the RM and that while it doesn’t matter to him where the RM builds the shop - he thinks that Raymore is the better choice. “I know how many trips are made to Raymore for items that Semans can’t offer.” On the day

we went by, employees were taking a break in a sea-can beside the shop. Doidge thinks that the employees will do a better job when happy and comfortable. Ian Saul, who was also in the no camp, said, “We are kind of disheartened we don’t know where to go. It’s back to the Semans Raymore

One of the culprits It doesn’t take long when talking to a grocery shopper to hear laments regarding higher costs stretching budgets to the max. Of course, few AG NOTES consumers, I CALVIN DANIELS suspect, have a real solid handle on exactly what they spend on food. There is a tendency to point to the bags from the grocery store and note the cost of what was purchased. Often, of course, the bags contain far more than essential food, including things like magazines, toilet paper, aftershave, shampoo, dish soap, dog food, pop, chocolate bars and a new bathroom brush. Grocery stores today provide a wide range of non-food items that add to the purchase price, which are not part of the cost of the food we put on the table. At present, food costs are jumping.

That would not be the worst thing from a farmer’s perspective if they were actually seeing a better price based on the consumer paying more. That, however, is never the case. One of the culprits from the consumer perspective is the cost of meats, particularly beef. Certainly, farmers have seen an increase. Cattle prices in Alberta, for example, increased by 15.6 percent in September 2021 compared to the same period a year earlier, to $146.76 per hundredweight, the highest price in Canada, according to www.alberta.ca But $146 to a farmer for 100 pounds of beef would mean $1.46 per pound, a country mile and more from what beef is fetching in the grocery store. A pound of beef goes through several hands from the farm gate to the consumer table, with processors and store chains adding price along the way. Those along the production chain are able to set prices to an extent to ensure a profit at any time. Still, in the last year or two, they have had the ability to increase costs with near impunity

because they have lots of reasons they can point to, besides profit. There are the increased costs associated with, or at least tagged onto the COVID-19 pandemic. There is the ‘assumed’ impact of the carbon tax on everything we do. There are issues with weather, for example, the flooding in B.C. There are international issues such as the movement of goods on the ocean. They are all reasons to add costs to ensure profit retention, which add to the consumer costs but do not mean better returns for producers. Of course, the amount farmers receive likely has less impact on grocery

costs than many. It’s important to remember a bushel of barley typically produces about 300 bottles of beer, and a bushel of wheat yields 42 one-and-ahalf pound commercial loaves of white bread or roughly 90 one-pound loaves of whole wheat bread, after a quick google search. Prices for wheat and barley could jump and have only a minor impact on the cost of beer or wheat. - Calvin Daniels Comment on this article at lmtimes.ca/calvin Disclaimer: opinions expressed are those of the writer.

Canadian generosity hits lowest point in 20 years VANCOUVER—The number of Canadians donating to charity—as a percentage of all tax filers—is at the lowest point in the past 20 years, finds a new study published by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank. “The holiday season is a time to reflect on charitable giving, and the data shows Canadians are consistently less charitable every year, which means charities face greater challenges to secure resources to help those in need,” said Jake Fuss, senior policy analyst with the Fraser Institute and co-author of Generosity in Canada: The 2021 Generosity Index.

In hindsight, pretty good year for sports After a forgettable 2020, when almost all sports were COVID-halted, and fans were kept away even when the pro sports leagues resumed play (except for the Canadian Football League, which missed an entire season), a shadow of the status quo in the world of sports presented itself to fans in 2021. And, looking back, it wasn’t that bad a year. So let’s do a quick recap: — Athlete of the year: Damian Warner of London, Ont., laid claim to the title of world’s greatest athlete by winning FROM THE the decathlon at the Tokyo setting a points reSIDELINES Olympics, cord by exceeding the 9,000 BRUCE PENTON mark. Toronto swimmer Penny Oleksiak won three more medals to become the most decorated Canadian Olympian ever, with seven medals. — Canadian baseball fans saw the emergence of a superstar in Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., who covered first base for the Toronto Blue Jays and created terror for opposing pitchers. Guerrero, only 22, belted 48 home runs and … well, Jays’ fans can hardly wait for the 2022 season. As spectacular as he was at the plate, Guerrero took a back seat in Major League Baseball headlines to Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese phenom who crushed 46 home runs and also posted a 9-2 pitching record with a 3.18 ERA for the Angels. His pitching/hitting performance was unprecedented in the modern era. Long-suffering Atlanta Braves fans celebrated in early November as the team won its first World Series in 26 years. — Speaking of long-suffering: How ‘bout those Montreal Canadiens? Their fans were ecstatic as the team made July’s Stanley Cup final (losing, however, to Tampa Bay) for the first time since winning it all in 1993, but languishing among the NHL’s worst teams as the current season got under way. — Still with hockey, the flashy Oiler, Connor McDavid, continued to prove he’s in a class by himself, scoring highlight-reel goals almost on a weekly basis. — If 2021 proved one thing, it was that age isn’t much of a deterrent to success. Tom Brady at age 43 led Tampa Bay Bucs to the Super Bowl in February, and 50-year-old Phil Mickelson became the oldest golfer ever to win a major title, taking the PGA championship at Kiawah Island in May. — The biggest golf story of the year, however, was Tiger Woods’ car crash in February, which resulted in injuries so serious that the competitive career of the greatest golfer of all time is likely over. What isn’t over, though, is the continued ascension of Canadian golf stars on the PGA Tour, with Corey Conners (34th) and Mackenzie Hughes (39th) both among the world’s top 40 players. continues from page 1 underlying health conditions that are clinically extremely vulnerable, including those with diabetes. The Province’s Chief Medical officer, Dr. Shahab, said the recommendation changed from 6-5 months after data analysis showed that most positive cases were in unvaccinated people. However, when they looked at the breakthrough case data, they saw a small number of people nearing five months since their second dose. While most were mild, a few resulted in hospitalization at the five-month mark. Shahab said they expect people aged 18 and over will be eligible for boosters in the new year. As far as the new Omicron variant is concerned, Dr. Shahab said of the 154 travellers they were aware of, “They have all been followed up and are quarantining at home for two weeks. They have all been directed to get tested. About a third have been tested. So far, we have not detected any positive cases, but this process will continue currently with individuals who came back over the last 2-3 weeks. And prospectively also, as the Federal government has announced travelers from those impacted countries will have to submit to testing and quarantine as well as possibly additional countries where omicron transmission is flagged as a concern. So far the process is working well and we in Saskatchewan have not identified any Omicron.” Shahab said they are confident that they will detect Omicron due to travel or community transmission as all people who test positive go for whole-genome sequencing.

Shahab said that with the low case numbers that people can get together for the holidays when applying some basic guidelines– keeping gatherings small - ventilated areas – “if you are feeling unwell don’t go and don’t host.” He encouraged people to take advantage of widely available testing – by testing before going to a gathering. He asked people to be mindful of older individuals even if they have had a booster and those with suppressed immune systems or are vulnerable due to underlying health conditions, saying they may want to wear a mask indoors. “All of us have worked so hard in Saskatchewan to bring our case numbers so low. And what we need to do is maintain that low case number. But also look forward to a happy holiday season.” “So from that point of view, I think doing everything we’ve been doing – keeping our contacts generally as low as we can when we go about our daily business – obviously getting fully vaccinated is key – getting our children 5-11 vaccinated – and of course getting boosted now as we become eligible is going to become very important because…getting boosted will protect you further from holiday gatherings.” Jennifer Argue, Local Journalism Initiative reporter Note: These reports are abridged for content

MINISTERIAL MESSAGES

A Surprising Job Winter has begun to enter Saskatchewan. The temperatures drop but fluctuate as if there is a debate about the arrival of winter. The snow has started to arrive as well, which, of course, leads to snow removal. Often I do not mind it as long as the work does not put me under a time crunch. So last Saturday night, the snow began. It continued until the morning, adding another chore on my Sunday morning. So when I arrived at church, I was greeted by a pleasant surprise of a cleaned walkway. I do not know who did it, but it was just what I needed that day. I am grateful for that, and if the person responsible is reading, I say, “Thank you.” It is a neighbourly thing to do. Helping out someone else in the community is a way to build up a community and improve people’s outlook. It is also a good thing to do. Jesus himself hinted at this during his ministry. When questioned about a summary of what it means to be righteous, Jesus replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27, ESV) Being righteous is not only about your relationship with God but with other people as well. These are inseparable. So caring for God is caring for others. Some might take exception to my point, saying there are people with whom you cannot get along. This is true. The big question is, have you given them a chance? Do you try to care for your neighbour, or are you ready to write them off? Grace and forgiveness are important to the health of a community. Without them, communities will slowly tear apart and become a shadow of what they were. So we need to be the ones who care for others, even if it is hard. Perhaps the worst part of COVID is the separation inside of local communities. The fear has driven people apart when we need to be with each other more than ever. Helping each other is a natural part of life. The government is incapable of adequately caring for people. It tries and fails because people are so different. These differences lead people to make various choices, some good and some not so good. Yet, each person is made in the image of God and deserves respect. Even if we disagree with their choices, that is part of living in this world. The differences we have can be hard to deal with, especially when you do not understand the thinking of the other person, who likely does not understand your thinking. This makes loving your neighbour hard, but it is important. The first step is being with them. Like when Jesus came down to Earth, which is what Christmas is about, that humanity might know God better because Jesus was among us. Rev. Rick Shott Nokomis Baptist Church Comment on this at lmtimes.ca/minister Disclaimer: opinions expressed are those of the writer.

A forklift is a touchy animal in road gear, and it’s not that hard to get the back end swinging at even ten miles per hour. At ninety, the Dymaxion has the same problem, only much worse. A death wobble at speed is one thing, but when air gets under the vehicle and lifts the rear wheel that’s responsible for one-hundred percent of the steering right off the ground, you’ve got big problems. The Dymaxion wasn’t that heavy, certainly not heavy enough to account for its size. The frame was steel, but the body structure was wood, aluminum, and canvas. They built three in total, but only one remains today. Tragically, one was crashed at the 1933 World’s Fair, killing the driver and any chance of investor interest in such a vehicle. It was repaired and later lost in a fire. The other one was allegedly miled across the country and sold for scrap, which is a huge success if it’s true. One remains in a museum, telling the story of what could have been, had it not been for an unfortunate accident early on. Have a question or comment for Kelly? Post it at lmtimes.ca/kirk

generosity continues from page 6 The study also finds that the total amount donated by Canadians during the 2019 tax year—just 0.53 per cent of income—is the second lowest amount since at least 2000. During that period, Canadians’ generosity peaked at 0.72 per cent in 2006, before declining in subsequent years. Nationally, the percentage of Canadian tax filers donating to charity has fallen from 25.5 per cent to 19.0 per cent over that same 20-year period. The study finds that Manitoba had the highest percentage of tax filers that donated to charity among the provinces (21.9 per cent) during the 2019 tax year while Newfoundland & Labrador had the lowest (17.1per cent).

Likewise, Manitoba also donated the highest percentage of its aggregate income to charity among the provinces (0.74 per cent) while Quebec donated the lowest (0.24 per cent). “This year, a smaller proportion of Canadians are donating to registered charities, and those who are donating are donating less,” said Fuss. “This decline in generosity in Canada undoubtedly limits the ability of Canadian charities to improve the quality of life in their communities and beyond.” -Media Release, Fraser Institute
