Proverbs 29:18 advises that “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” The meaning of the proverb speaks to our need individually and collectively for guidance and discipline. For us, mission can be the bedrock of purpose and vision can be the beacon of the future. After many months of consideration, the Birmingham YMCA has adopted a new strategic plan that builds on the traditions of the past and blazes a bold path as one of the most relevant forces in the community tackling one of the most pressing issues of the day. Our historic mission was validated: We exist to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Additionally, our vision was updated. In response to the growing lifestyle health crisis in our country that is fast moving from chronic to acute locally, the YMCA will lead our community to be the healthiest in America. Working goals were articulated. Benchmarks and governance will monitor progress in these Birmingham YMCA Director five key areas: participation, of Association Advancement education, collaboration, and facilities. And to guide our effort a pathway was illuminated. Activate America is the YMCA’s national response to the growing lifestyle health crisis. Our strategic efforts could not have aligned better with this plan for YMCA capacity building. We are actively working internally and externally to effect positive change in our Ys, in our communities, and in the people we serve. Internally we are working to better understand and serve health seekers by training for all staff in relationship building, by using member focused data to inform our decisions, improving our environments so that our message is consistent and supported in our programs and facilities by creating programs so that we respond to those we serve in a compelling manner, and by building staff capabilities to accomplish this work. Externally we will extend our reach into the community by expanding key community outreach events like America on the Move Week and Healthy Kids Day, participating in ongoing learning opportunities like the Gulick Collaborative, engaging in advocacy to influence changes in policy and the built environment to support healthy eating and active living. It is our hope that where there is a vision, and the willingness to be a leader and a partner, that the people will flourish. Join us in this journey to transform our communities to total health of spirit, mind and body. Learn more about the strategic plan on page 15 and read what Reverend Tom Rains, the Birmingham YMCA’s chaplain, has to say about vision on page 22.

Grant expands Camp Cosby's Avian Education Program

The Outdoor Classroom at Camp Cosby is the recipient of the 2009 Legacy Competitive Grant which will help expand the camp’s ground breaking Avian Education Project. The $7,670 grant will be applied to various educational tools that will enhance the program’s expansion to allow students close-up views of birds, including: • Feeders, water sources, and vegetation for cover, all necessary factors for bird habitat; • Barriers that will allow the viewing of birds by students and a one-of-a-kind hexagonal bird blind designed for maximum viewing; • 15 field guides; • Two spotting scopes and 20 pairs of binoculars for viewing birds at the various feeding stations. Currently, Camp Cosby's 137 acres of lakefront woodland habitat provides opportunities for campers to see birds and learn ornithology, but loses other learning opportunities as large groups of kids on the trails scare away interesting species. The Legacy grant will provide the tools necessary to inspire students with views of some of the 400+ species of birds that reside or migrate through Alabama. Launched earlier this year, the Avian Education Project enables Camp Cosby to house rescued birds that are unable to be released back into the wild and use them in science-based programming, allowing students to get a clear view of live birds and learn their natural history. The rescued birds consist of an Education American Kestrel which is glove-trained for use in programming. The Kestrel was received as a

nestling by The Wildlife Center in Birmingham. Named Legacy, the bird honors Legacy Partners in Education, the organization that has made the Outdoor Classroom environmental education expansion possible.

Exercise as medicine exercise referral program comes to Birmingham

What if you could go to your doctor and get a prescription for a medicine that would do all of the following: lower blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight; improve cholesterol, sleep, and bone and heart health; and decrease the risk of cancer? The prescription exists. The “medicine” is exercise. And the Birmingham YMCA has prescribed. “Exercise is Medicine” is a YMCA of the USA-endorsed exercise program aimed at improving health through physicianreferred activity. Birmingham is the first city in the southeast to be involved in the joint initiative between the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Association. Birmingham YMCA member Dr. Sophia Lal, D.O., UAB Physical Medicine and Rehab/ Orthopedic Surgery, heads the program and during a recent talk challenged physicians in every specialty to consider activity as a vital indicator in every patient visit and diagnosis. Dr. Lal recognizes that the Birmingham YMCA is on the leading edge of this collaboration, waiving the membership joining fee of patients who have an “Exercise is Medicine” prescription from their physician. For more information on the initiative, visit www.exerciseismedicine.org online.

Life Skills

3 Reasons to Become a ymca volunteer 1. Volunteer to your interests

I’ve always had a passion for golf and we have an annual fund raising golf tournament here at the Shelby County Branch. So, when I was asked to chair the event, I said ‘sure, why not?’ Find your passion and pursue it.

2. Volunteer for your family, for your community

Get involved; volunteer for your family, and for your community. I had a selfish reason to get involved; it was for my kids as a volunteer coach. But it was clear that my volunteering would benefit everyone. Become more involved in the life of your family, and you will become more involved in the life of your community.

3. Volunteer to get a sense of accomplishment

The bottom line is this: it’s for the kids and the community. Once you see that, you really understand what all the work is for. But you have to be willing to commit yourself and step out there at least one time and see how it goes. Success is so exhilarating that you say ‘bring on the next one!’

Calvin Gunn is a member of the Shelby County Branch, is a division leader for the Strong Kids & Communities Campaign, and is the Chairman of the 2008 Shelby County Branch Spring Golf Tournament.

More toys = more volunteers needed!

You may have noticed sign-up in your neighborhood YMCA last month for Toys for Tots. In the association’s fifth year to work with the Marines on the holiday gift program, expectation is that we’ll need more toys for more tots, which means we’ll need more volunteers. Can you help? You can help, if you drop off new toys at the YMCA through mid-December. You can help, if you ask your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues to do the same. You can help, if you have time to volunteer, to join fellow YMCA members and staff December 1219 at the Birmingham YMCA Youth Center, to be the jolly red man for children from all of our communities. The gym floor of the center will be the city’s largest toy warehouse from which volunteers will bag and distribute gifts to the families and children who have signed up. Join us any of those days from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. For more information, and to volunteer, e-mail dhill@ ymcabham.org or call Marketing/ Communications Director David Hill at 801.7209. H

ow can I be involved? What can I do to help? How can I make a difference? The big question isn’t ‘should I ________, but ‘how do I ___________,’ make a positive difference in my community? Listen to two of our volunteers, each of whom has advice for when you decide to get involved at – or through – your neighborhood YMCA. For over a decade, Calvin Gunn -- who was introduced on page five -- has been instrumental in many volunteer efforts at the Shelby County Branch. An avid golfer, he was the chairman of the Shelby County Branch YMCA 2008 Spring Golf Classic, an event that garnered over $15,000 for the Strong Kids initiative. Calvin has also served as a division leader on the branch Strong Kids Campaign, a role that 6 www.ymcabham.org

involves asking individuals and companies for donations, an idea that is often a stumbling block for new volunteers. Calvin overcame a public-speaking fear in high school; he says that when new volunteers conquer the fear of asking for money, everyone benefits. “Once volunteers realize what the benefits to their fellow members and program participants are, they usually overcome the fear of calling on businesses or individuals,” he said. “If you don’t ask, the answer is always ‘no’. If you ask, they say ‘yes,’ ‘no’ or ‘maybe.’ It doesn’t hurt my feelings. It’s not a personal thing if someone says ‘no’ to you. “One of the reasons most people say they don’t give is because they’ve never been asked. We make it a point to ask everyone.” What if you are a long-term member of a branch that is

Serving their communities Above Shelby County member Calvin Gunn has utilized his passion for golf into a volunteer opportunity, helping the branch’s annual golf tournament become a significant fund raiser for the Strong Kids & Communities Campaign.

still establishing itself in the YMCA system and doesn’t have many volunteer opportunities? Do what Vestavia’s Phyllis Seale has done – look for new opportunities and take advantage of them. A member of Vestavia Xpress for over 15 years, Phyllis has found ways to incorporate her desire to serve both inside and outside the branch walls. A big believer in women’s fitness, Phyllis works one-on-one with women, encouraging them to make positive health and wellness changes in their lives. “The woman I’m working with now is 67, a little bit older than I am, and has had some major health problems. I had worked with her earlier and had helped her get in great shape, but with these health problems she stopped exercising, and I thought she was going to die,” Phyllis said. “I had been working with her four days a week in the afternoons. We walk the track, do weights in between, and now I’ve started to work on the step with her. Her stamina has increased, her strength level has increased,” she added. Away from the branch, Phyllis has been involved in community outreach for Gate City, one of Birmingham’s poorest neighborhoods for over 20 years. She helped organize a Christmas gift program for the children of Gate City’s Marks Village several years ago, but saw a need to help the community’s

residents throughout the year, not just at Christmas. Phyllis recruited Vestavia members to help. The effort has grown from serving 40 kids to offering Christmas gifts to more than 500. Year-round tutoring for both kids and adults, and a college scholarship program that serves over 20 students, rounds out the community program. “We supplied all of the sports equipment for a baseball team and game balls for a basketball team,” Phyllis said. “People from the Y have supplied computers for the community’s lab. “The Birmingham YMCA offers as much volunteer assistance as do the community’s churches.”

Phyllis Seale wins philanthropy award Each year, an outstanding “Volunteer in Philanthropy” (VIP) is selected to represent the Birmingham YMCA Association at the National Philanthropy Day awards event sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. This year, Phyllis Seale will represent the YMCA as its VIP, well-deserved honor for this dedicated community advocate. Congratulations Phyllis!

COMMUNITY TO GOOD HEALTH Strategic goals Participation: We will expand and deepen participation in YMCA programs. Education: We will intentionally design ymca programs that expand the building blocks of healthy human development: spirit, mind and body. Collaboration: We will actively seek credible partners with similar community interests to accomplish the vision. Inclusion: We will commit ourselves to inclusion in our programs, in our branches and in our communities. Facilities: We will prove our commitment to quality and excellence for all through effective stewardship of our resources. Our promises We will: Build positive relationships and caring communities through our membership and programs. This is why we do activities and not for the activities’ sake. • Be good and responsible stewards of our resources, be they financial, physical or human. This is the foundation of our ability to serve. • Win broad support in fundraising, collaborations, partnerships and image in order to enhance our ability to lead and serve. • Develop, improve and expand our services, programs and facilities to more broadly serve our communities and achieve our vision. • Evidence inclusion in those we serve, our staff and our volunteers. “For all” will be more than words. • Do what we say we do and prove it by measuring the impact of our programs in the lives of our constituents, assuring high quality, high values and high effectiveness.

We will intentionally design YMCA programs that expand the building blocks of healthy human development: spirit, mind and body.

Only the Names Change The Thursday 8:30 a.m. class has been changed to “CardioBlast” and the Saturday 8:30 a.m. MuscleWorks class is now Extreme Conditioning. Contact Mary Casciaro at 870.0144. Downtown Jump To It! Led by Connie Butts, Jump To It! is performed on mini-trampolines in an exercise called rebounding. Jump To It is a safe, fun and effective way to get and stay in shape. Rebounding firms the legs, glutes and abs while placing little stress on the joints. It’s an excellent cardiovascular workout that promotes agility and balance. Unlike any other exercise, the extra gravitational force from jumping up and down on the trampoline helps to activate the lymphatic system which results in a more efficient immune system – an extraordinary benefit! Schedule Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30 p.m. | Saturday, 8:30 a.m. Contact Stephanie Rubens at 324-4563. Greystone Schedule Changes Check the schedule during the holiday season for modifications AND surprises! There will be times when the “regular” schedule may change a bit; offering specialty classes and Holiday JAMS! Have a happy, healthy holiday season! Contact Renae McCullough at 205.981.0144.

Circuit What is this thing “vision”? Among other things, it’s a picture of where we want to go. It may be something that does not yet exist, but we can imagine it and see it in our mind’s eye. Vision has been called “a picture of the future that produces a passion in the present.” It’s a thing that we get excited about, a thing that we hope for, a thing which drives our actions and efforts. Here at the Y, we share a vision that we will lead our community to become the healthiest in America. As we look around us, we see that we are certainly not there yet, but we are focusing our efforts on that vision today so we can move toward it. In time, through our programs and activities and services and partnerships, it will come about. A lack of vision, someone has said, is like “trying to see underwater without a mask.” Everything is blurry and it’s hard to know where we are and where we are going. As another wag put it, “If you don’t know where you are going, then how will you know when you get there.” We must imagine the possibilities. Imagination is that wonderful thing that gives us hope, that thing that allows us to dream, that carries us into the future to a place where things are better than we find them today. Imagination is the capacity to think of a world that is better than the one we have, and to believe that we can get there. If we want to see our way in life more clearly, to see a sharper picture of our destination and purpose, and have a desire to be motivated to do something that counts, then we must have a vision. It’s fascinating to see how some people are driven toward their destinations. Some go it alone, acting by themselves, struggling along, plodding along, loping along at whatever speed they are capable of, a vision dancing in their heads. Billy Elliot was a talented young boy who loved to dance (you should see the movie Billy Elliot, or the Broadway musical), and his heart-warming story is one of overcoming adversity to realize his vision of become a great dancer. He did. His vision became his life and his vision became a reality. Sometimes great organizations have a great vision but they also encounter roadblocks. A church I know had a wonderful vision of building a much-needed childcare center for their

Chaplain’s

community. It was a good idea, but one of the elderly church members, who was very wealthy, objected and refused to go along with the vision. Some kids had broken the windows out of his abandoned warehouse, and he was pretty sore about it and complained loudly at the board meeting, refusing to do anything for “those obstreperous hoodlums.” Ne ver t hele ss, the building committee went ahead with their planned luncheon to tell folks about their vision and to solicit funding. Some children from the neighborhood, in which many people lived who had lost their jobs with the recent mill closing, Birmingham YMCA Chaplain were invited to sing. They did and after they sang the children came out into the audience to meet the church members. A pretty little five year-old with long, blonde ringlets came over to meet the wealthy old curmudgeon who objected to the childcare center and, as children sometimes will do, she lovingly put her arms around the man’s neck and crawled up into his lap. As friends watched to see his reaction, the elderly man put his arms tenderly around the little girl and held her for a long moment. At the board meeting the following evening, guess who made the motion to move ahead with the childcare center? In time, the church’s vision became a reality, and while he didn’t want folks to know it, the wealthy old curmudgeon with a soft spot for pretty little girls with long, blonde ringlets made the largest gift. Volunteers are essential to the success of any not-for-profit organization, especially like the YMCA, whether they bring their energies or their much-needed funds or their talents for success in their own professions. They are often the ones who share the vision that drives the organization, and chances are, you will find most volunteers putting their best efforts into making it a reality. Take a look at the YMCA boards around this city and you’ll see what I mean.

‘If we want to see our way in life more clearly, then we must have a vision.’

Angie Dormuth GREYSTONE

It’s rare to have a member in the ranks of a Pilates or spinning class who is as knowledgeable – perhaps more so – than the instructor. However, that just may be the case with Greystone member Angie Dormuth. Angie was on the forefront of fitness and group exercise in Alabama 35 years ago – in thr days of 45s, leg warmers, and sweat bands. Angie began teaching group exercises courses at Enterprise Junior College in the mid 1970s, leading groups of women of all ages through a fitness regimen that include jogging, calisthenics, and even weight training, two decades before women in the weight room was the norm. For Angie, the purpose of her program was to help women achieve desirable results by focusing on the whole body. In other words, spot reducing programs and exercising long enough just to lose a few pounds. Angie believes women must focus on all areas and aspects of the body in order to look and feel better. “When I taught I called the class Fitness and Figure Control, because most women wanted figure control,” Angie said. “If you follow a sound fitness program, figure control will come naturally. “Psalm 139:14 says ‘I am fearfully and wonderfully made,’ and I truly believe that,” Angie added. Even though her teaching days may be behind her, Angie still makes health and wellness a priority. She gets a cardiovascular workout in Spinning classes while focusing on Yoga and Reformer Pilates classes to help with strength, balance and flexibility. Pilates, she emphasizes, is a great workout for men and women who are busy with the physical demands of modern life. “Pilates puts the body in proper alignment and works the body as a whole,” Angie said. “Think about it, if you’re out working in the yard you’re not just standing in place working your biceps.” While Angie is clearly motivated to work out on her own, she appreciates the personal relationships that develop in a class. “I’m a people person and I really enjoy the camaraderie of a group exercise class,” Angie said. “I like getting to know each other. Class members miss you when you’re not there and they ask you about your kids. I really like that about the Y.”

“Whatever we possess becomes of double value when we have the opportunity of sharing it with others.”
