BEST OF DENTON 2010

T

here’s nothing quite like the hometown flavor of Denton. Every year, residents select their favorites among the many small businesses and chains alike, selecting those that provide top quality and strong customer service. If you’re looking for someone to cook up that special lunch, someone to cater an event, a place to find that special outfit, or someone to help you buy a new car or fix an old one, this list is for you. With 2,265 voters — a record for the annual Best of Denton campaign — these top three winners in every category come highly recommended. Take a few minutes to read about the winners and see who came in second and third. Soon, you’ll see bright red banners around town proclaiming “Best of Denton,” a sure sign that the businesses behind them are the best. The Denton RecordChronicle offers hearty congratulations to this year’s win-

ners and a special thanks to the thousands who took time to vote for their favorites online. Dawn Cobb Managing editor Denton Record-Chronicle 940-566-6879 dcobb@dentonrc.com www.DentonRC.com

Couples can get a half-day massage-and-lunch package, and guys can get a one-hour massage, a facial and a manicure. BEST LOCAL ACTOR/ACTRESS

04 22 10

BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMER Local actor Justin Harmon is on a streak. And here’s why: He can go from tight, comic hijinks to dramatic reflection in 10 seconds. This year’s win is probably the result of Harmon’s face-off with another Denton stage favorite, Buster Maloney, in A Tuna Christmas, a two-man show that had Harmon and Maloney playing the whole town of Tuna, Texas — male and female. Harmon brought unexpected depth to the lawbending son Stanley Bumiller, and a pitch-perfect girlish flirtation as Helen Bedd. Harmon has dozens of local credits to his name. We wonder if he might try a local treatment of a classic — perhaps the title role in The Importance of Being Ernest? (If a local company put it on its season, we’d like Harmon to take a crack at it.) The first to set roots, this comfortable, hometown bar set its sights on re-establishing itself as the place to hangout for Dentonites. It not only has succeeded, but it has brought a lot of friends to put up roots nearby. In what was once a feed store, longtime grocery store and

other similar businesses, the likes of Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Rooster’s Roadhouse, Andaman Thai, Cold Fusion, Hot Box Pizza and more now thrive. But who would bet it would be the best place in Denton to view art? Obviously Denton voters did, because it topped the list of venues in town. Customers can’t miss the two-dimensional art displayed against a black background filling the north wall while they partake in something yummy. The show, which features North Texas artists, changes on a monthly basis, and patrons can meet the artist at an evening reception on the third Sunday. 1350 S. Loop 288 940-380-2904 www.lafitness.com

This brand-new, gleaming gym can’t be missed — it shines from a comfortable corner at S. Loop 288 and Spencer Road, near all the big box retail stores at Denton Crossing. L.A. Fitness is a combination of economy and utility in terms of space — racquetball courts line the east side of the gym and a group exercise classroom with ergonomic suspended wood floors is tucked into the northeast corner of the building, with a line of punching bags. Free weights are at the northern side of the building, and universal fitness machines stretch from the entrance to the staircase. Those stairs lead to a second story stable of cardio machines — elliptical trainers, crossover machines (think a hybrid of an elliptical trainer, stationary bicycle and an inclining treadmill) treadmills, recumbent and stationary bikes. On the west end of the gym is a pool — water aerobics and lap swim happen here — and a spin cycle classroom. L.A. Fitness is wisely built; all of the group exercise rooms are soundproofed both for classes and those in the open gym. The gym is staffed with friendly, competent trainers. (We wish there were more women on the training staff, though.) Our favorite group exercise? The 5:45 a.m. spin cycle class. Yes, it’s hard. The gym runs affordable promotions every week, and you can track your workouts online. Runner-up: Brickhouse Gym

THINGS TO DO/CREATIVE JUICES BEST PLACE IN DENTON TO TAKE THE FAMILY BEST PLACE TO GO ON A DATE DOWNTOWN SQUARE In Denton, we love our downtown Square. During the day, it’s the place for an afternoon of music during the spring and summer as well as the spot to pick up an ice cream cone, eat lunch, spend hours shopping and sipping a cup of java at any of several coffee shops. At night, a sense of transformation occurs and Denton’s Square becomes the happening hot spot for music, dinner, a late evening stroll. It comes alive with the white lights draping across tree limbs and the neon colors shining from the Campus Theatre sign and other business marquees. The sounds of music waft from nearby hangouts, whether it be the Boiler Room, J&J’s Pizza or Andy’s Bar or from down the street at Dan’s Silverleaf,

#1 BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT 2010

Denton’s own Brave Combo is the heart and soul of this community — from the funfilled chicken dance many of us learned years ago to the hot polka replete with a lively beat. Longtime band members Carl Finch and Jeffrey Barnes are the familiar faces of a band that has been a part of our landscape for at least a couple of generations. We are proud of our favored band for its multiple Grammy nominations and for its continued mission to keep polka alive and well across the country. You just can’t sit still when listening to their music. It’s impossible. Runner-Up: Eli Young Band Bragging rights: Midlake
