Denton has much to offer newcomers to the North Texas region as the county seat of Denton County, the home of two state universities and the center of a growing indie music scene. From the annual Arts and Jazz Festival that draws more than 100,000 to 35 Denton, a showcase of local, regional and national indie bands, Denton has the heart and soul many have come to cherish. The city’s growth has continued to march upward in spite of recent economic woes across the country, attracting new business from restaurants to retail as well as regional distribution centers and even an internationally known company, Sally Beauty Supply. Downtown continues to blossom with business and residential mixed-use developments, offering an opportunity to live, work and play in the center of the city. Denton County Transportation Authority’s A-train offers commuters the opportunity to live in Denton and work in Dallas or vice versa. Two major thoroughfares link back together in Denton with Interstate 35E heading into Dallas while Interstate 35W takes you into Fort Worth. The city’s thriving arts community and many service and non-profit organizations provide outlets for creativity, volunteerism and assistance for those in need. The city and county take extra measures to preserve much of the area’s history through historical markers, a renowned courthouse on the Square and a village of historical homes nearby. Plans on the horizon include an arts corridor linking the popular Square to the Atrain’s Denton Station. The Square itself is a major draw with free concerts and a smorgasbord of small businesses offering food, coffee, candy from years past, comic books, chocolate and other concoctions, antiques and collectibles, a recycled book store, and much more. Denton is much more than a destination, it is a place to call home. Inside this issue are many lists to help you discover Denton and Denton County as you make your journey around town — whether to visit or become a resident.

New to Denton?

Discovering Denton County

7

Here’s some things you need to know

By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

So you are new to Denton? First of all, welcome. Denton is a great place to live. It’s a big city known for hosting events like the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo and the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival, and it still offers friendly neighborhoods and plenty of urban conveniences. As of the 2010 census, its population was 113,383, making Denton the 27th most populous city in Texas and 11th-largest in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Whether you are moving from out of state or another part of the great state of Texas, there are likely a multitude of things you need to take care of. The good news is you’re finally here — and even better news — we are going to make your remaining “to do list” a bit easier to handle. One of the first items you need to take care upon arriving in Denton County should be to take care of such details as driver’s license changes, vehicle registration, and vehicle inspection. DRIVER’S LICENSE If you’re new to Texas, a trip to a Department of Public Safety office is necessary. A list of offices can be found on the agency’s Web site, www.txdps.state.tx.us . Bring your out-of-state license if you have one and proof of Social Security number, which can be a Social Security card or one of many other official documents. Also, proof of Texas vehicle registration and liability insurance is required if you own a vehicle. If the out-of-state license is valid, the only required exam will be an eye test. If the license is expired, a written exam and driving test will also be administered. The standard fee for a Texas license is around $16-25. Under state law, though, bad drivers — those who accumulate at least three major moving violations or who cause two or more accidents — will have to pay a surcharge to renew their

licenses. If moving within the state, you have 30 days to report the address change to the DPS. The paperwork can be obtained by visiting any DPS office, by emailing customerservicedl@txdps.state.tx.us and requesting a form or by downloading the document from the DPS Web site and mailing it to the state. A $10 fee will be charged. VEHICLE INSPECTION Texas requires that vehicles undergo annual inspections in the county in which they’re registered. These often can be done when getting an oil change or tire rotation, though it is a good idea to call ahead to make sure a garage is licensed to do the checks. VEHICLE REGISTRATION To register your vehicle in Texas, go to the Denton County tax assessor-collector’s office at 300 E. McKinney St. in Denton with proof of vehicle ownership, inspection, and insurance. If the vehicle’s title is not in your name, proof of purchase must be provided. After the proper documentation is shown and forms are filled out, a fee will be assessed based on the vehicle’s year, make and model or, if a truck, its weight. A registration sticker and license plates will be issue. Even if you have only moved within the state, you must notify authorities. Denton offers shoppers plenty to choose from By Jenna Duncan Staff Writer

From boutiques to big brands, Denton shoppers can find the latest trends and individual styles without leaving the city limits. The retail scene has been growing since Rayzor Ranch Marketplace began opening stores in late 2010. Now, shoppers can find major retailers Kohl’s and Ross Dress For Less alongside Famous Footwear. The adjacent property is also set to begin construction soon, bringing a Cinemark Movie Bistro and, hopefully, more retail, said Stephanie Whitlow, director of marketing and communications for RED Development, the company overseeing the development. “Rayzor Ranch Marketplace is setting the stage for what will be a brand-new super-regional shopping destination — with the addition of Rayzor Ranch Town Center, the two properties will offer 1.2 million square feet of retail, dining and entertainment to serve this rapidly growing area,” she said in a statement.

Coming this year, there will be a 72,000-square-foot Academy Sports + Outdoors, and an additional 48,000 square feet of other retail space that has yet to be leased at Marketplace. With recent renovations complete, Golden Triangle Mall continues to expand its offerings and longtime tenants such as Dillard’s and J.C. Penney are expanding their spaces. Newer retailers such as popular teen stores Charlotte Russe, Buckle and Zumiez are also flocking to the space. This means Denton is retaining the tax base and keeping money in the city instead of shoppers going to Lewisville or Frisco, said Matt Ludemann, the mall manager. “It’s convenient and a fresh new environment,” he said. “There are lots of extra amenities like all new interior seating and some new food options along the way. I think we’re created a pretty good shopping experience and are in the process of creating a very exciting shopping experience.” Throughout town there are also dozens

of independent store fronts that exist only in Denton. The area around the downtown square is packed with retailers that specialize in everything from jewelry to shoes to antiques. Just off the square but still in the downtown area are many other retailers, including Sleeping Lizards and the DIME Store. "Downtown Denton has an eclectic mix of boutiques and shops ranging from

shabby chic furniture, vintage clothing and antiques to fine furnishings, appliances, art, books, music and clothing,” said Christine Gossett of the Denton Main Street Association. “Locally-owned shops and galleries provide a local touch with their handmade or hand-crafted, recycled, or brand items, and personal customer service.” Other independent retailers, including J.T. Clothiers and Small Fry Children’s Clothing, are also located in the city.

Local universities educate students, entertain residents By Britney Tabor Staff Writer

Denton County’s local universities and colleges wear several hats. In addition to educating students, the county’s two state universities and community college host several concerts, exhibits, lectures and other events for local residents to attend throughout the year. Texas Woman’s University Texas Woman’s University, which has been in Denton more than a century, has something to offer residents of all ages. The university is home to an art collection of more than 200 pieces that are available for viewing online and by tour

on the Denton campus. Little Chapel in the Woods is considered TWU’s crown jewel by most locals. Constructed and dedicated by first lady Eleanor Roosevelt in 1939, the 110-seat interdenominational chapel features artwork designed and created by university students including stained-glass windows of “women ministering to human needs,” according to the university website. The facility was designed by architect O’Neil Ford and is designated “one of Texas’ 20 most outstanding architectural achievements by the Texas Society of Architects,” according to the TWU website. Unless reserved for a wedding or an event, the chapel is open to the general

public, according to a university spokesperson. The TWU campus in Denton also houses a collection of photos and biographies of women who’ve been inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame in Hubbard Hall. Also on display in Hubbard Hall are the gowns and clothing worn by Texas first ladies, dating back to the 1800s. Events hosted annually at the university include Global Awareness Month activities in the fall, the Boo at the U Fall Festival in October and the TWU Arts Triangle Walking Tour in the spring. For more information on attractions and events at TWU, visit www.twu.edu.

Throughout the year, several art pieces are on display at the university and at its gallery, UNT on the Square, located at 109 N. Elm St., in downtown Denton. UNT is home to Mean Green Athletics, and throughout the year hosts several sporting events including football, basketball, soccer, softball and track and field. As part of its continuing education offerings, the university offers opportunities for individuals to travel the country and the world with a UNT faculty member through its Travel-Learn program. For more information on offerings available to the public at UNT, visit www.unt.edu.

University of North Texas UNT was first established in 1890. Annually more than 1,000 concerts are hosted on the Denton campus, according to a university spokesperson. From concerts featuring university student musicians to big names in music, the university offers a variety of performances.

North Central Texas College The Denton County branch of North Central Texas College is located along Interstate 35E in Corinth. For more information on events hosted at the campus and open to the general public, visit www.nctc.edu.

Denton County offers a wide variety of schools By Britney Tabor Staff Writer

From public and private school options to charter school and home school, Denton County offers a variety of selections for families looking for a place their child can learn. The district stretches 180 square miles and its boundaries touch 16 different cities, communities and developments in Denton County. In November 2013, voters approved a $312 million bond package supporting a fourth comprehensive high school, a ninth-grade addition at Guyer High School, two new elementary schools, a middle school, renovations at 17 campuses, energy conservation improvements and land acquisition. According to district officials, enrollment for the Denton school district is projected to total more than 26,000 prekindergarten through 12th-grade students for the 2014-15 school year. Pet-friendly Denton welcomes four-legged residents By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe Staff Writer

Denton has plenty to offer its fourlegged residents, thanks in part to a city dog park, a long-running festival and a new animal shelter. Shelter The new Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center is expected to open at the end of August. Capt. Scott Fletcher, who oversees Denton’s animal services, says the new facility will make it easier than ever for people to find a pet that will be a good fit for their family. Located at 3717 N. Elm St., the new center has four get-acquainted rooms in addition to more ample facilities – kennels, rooms and yards – where dogs and cats can live and play temporarily until they find their new forever home. The center also offers on-site veterinary care. “So when someone is ready to adopt, they can take the animal home with them that day,” Fletcher said. The fee to adopt a dog or cat is $60,

which includes city registration, shots and spay or neuter, if necessary. Staff and volunteers at the new shelter will continue to care for lost and surrendered pets, that can include chickens and pot-bellied pigs and other less-common animal companions, as they have done at the current shelter at 300 S. Woodrow Lane for many years. Denton holds lost pets a little longer than the state requires, a full 96 hours, to give owners time to reclaim them. For more information, call Denton Animal Services at (940) 349-7594. Park Denton’s dog park, Wiggly Field, is located in Lake Forest Park at 1760 E. Ryan Rd. Two fenced areas, slightly less than an acre for small or shy dogs and two acres for large dogs, offers plenty of room to be off the leash, run and play. There are no restrooms at Wiggly Field, but the park does have drinking fountains for both humans and pets. Dogs must be licensed and display current rabies vaccination tags to use the

park. It costs $4 to register a spayed or neutered animal with Denton Animal Services and $25 for an unaltered pet. For more information on registering your animal, or the rules and etiquette for Wiggly Field, visit the city’s website, www.cityofdenton.com. Festival For more than 20 years, the city has played host to the Dog Days of Denton festival, an event for canines and their human pets. This year, the event will be held September 27 at the North Texas State Fairgrounds in Denton. Organizers plan a canine couture fashion show, demonstrations by dogs and their trainers, contests, food and other entertainment. Residents looking for volunteer opportunities can work directly with Denton animal services or the many rescue group partners who care for feral cats, or help foster dogs and until they can find their forever homes. What is First Christian Church? It’s the worship of God—a time for quiet prayer—for renewing our faith as followers of Christ—for fellowship with others—and for service to the community and those in need. It’s an active youth group putting on a play—involved in camp or service projects. It’s a vibrant music ministry offering Bluegrass to jazz to Bach, Handel, and church favorites. It’s the fun and excitement of an Easter Egg Hunt and children asking “How many eggs did you find? First Christian Church welcomes all. We respect differences in people and opinions. Denton offers year-round visual, performing arts By Lucinda Breeding Denton takes a short rest from its busy creative hustle each year: that tiny breath between Christmas and the New Year. The rest of the year is a riot of activity, from music – classical, jazz, indie rock and hip-hop -- to dance, from visual art to the Denton Community Market.

Denton, too. A thriving indie-folk movement has nurtured the likes of Doug Burr, Seryn, Chambers and Hares on the Mountain. The local hip-hop scene is exploding, and the experimental artists can usually find a spot on a show, either at one of the city’s principal live music venues, or at one of the many house show venues in the city.

Music Denton has drawn comparisons to Austin for decades not just because it’s home to a major state university. Denton is likened to Austin because it incubates so many professional musicians and refines the musical palate of thousands of fans. Between the Winspear Hall and the Lyric Theatre inside the Lucille “Lupe” Murchison Performing Arts Center, the University of North Texas presents up to three student recitals a day, in addition to faculty and guest performances. Elsewhere on campus, a similar schedule keeps recitals and concerts churning in the Paul Voertman Concert Hall, Stan Kenton Hall, the university recital hall and Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theatre. Even in the summer, UNT keeps performance spaces busy. A keyboard percussion symposium had pianists performing and presenting on campus the week of June 16. The keyboardists shared the campus with the conductors collegiums, a conference for emerging orchestra and symphony leaders. Both events produced public concerts. Texas Woman’s University keeps its faculty and students busy on stage at Margo Jones Performance Hall – lending the spotlight to instrumental and voice students, choirs and ensembles. Indie rock music is alive and well in

Venues All of Denton’s venues book a sampling of music, but some of the city’s venues are known for attracting emerging stars and luminaries of a particular sort. Rockin’ Rodeo, 1009 Ave. C., boasts the biggest live music stage in Denton. Located right off of the UNT campus, the club plays top 40 music on several nights a week. On Thursday nights, Rockin’ Rodeo gives the stage to Texas, Red Dirt and Country bands and artists. Dan’s Silverleaf, a popular downtown venue, has a showcase for every taste. The bar and venue, located at 103 Industrial St., brings some of the most respected musicians and bands – Eleven Hundred Springs and Wayne “the Train” Hancock, Bill Frisell, Susan Gibson and even Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (a duo made up of Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl). Dan’s Silverleaf has also let some serious Denton talent serve up libations from behind the bar when they aren’t on the stage performing: Sarah Jaffe, Robert Gomez and Isaac Hoskins. Andy’s Bar books a healthy slice of its calendar to hip-hop crews – Fab Deuce, D. Smiley, S. Goode, the Brain Gang and Av the Great. Its seen its share of electroni dance music (Subsonic Indulgence, a regular electronic dance music bash held at Andy’s Bar, had its last dance on June 12.

Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios is the best-loved dive bar in Denton – and owner Josh Baish is the first to use “dive” to describe the well-worn bar and snug, battered stage. National and international touring acts seek out the sticky bar that sits literally on the other side of the railroad tracks, at 411 E. Sycamore St. Modest Mouse, the Mountain Goats and

Death Cab for Cutie have played at the club. A bonus: Rubber Gloves devoted some surplus space to become La Meme Gallery, which staged one-night-only art exhibits sporadically.

Hailey’s Club boasts the biggest stage and dance floor next to Rockin’ Rodeo. Patrons can sit at the bar or claim one of the few but coveted booths nearby. But most patrons spend an evening at Hailey’s Club on the dance floor near the stage. There are a few pool tables in a far corner, but most of the folks who visit the bar are there for the theme nights. Now under new management, the bar hosts a local hip-hop showcase most Friday nights, officiated by DJ Spinn Mo. Take note: The Friday night hip-hop showcases include a dress code, but doesn’t explain what constitutes “proper attire.” The downtown venue, at 122 W. Mulberry St. Music buffs in Denton can also hit up The Labb, at 218 W. Oak St., and the Abbey Underground, at 100 W. Walnut St. The Old Dirty Basement at J&J’s Pizza, 118 W. Oak St. on the downtown Denton Square is famous for its loud and rowdy shows. Sweetwater Grill & Tavern had developed a fierce following for its jazz series on the popular patio in downtown Denton. The series is on tenterhooks now, though, as new owners prepare to reopen the restaurant and bar in August – new owner Ryann Reid said on the tavern’s Facebook page. The visual arts do a brisk business in Denton. The lone public gallery is the Appleton-Patterson Center for the Visual Arts. The larger Meadows Gallery is the setting for the Greater Denton Arts Council’s flagship annual exhibit,

June 29, 2014 Materials: Hard & Soft. The show is a national American contemporary craft competition, and is the first exhibit of the year. The smaller Gogh Gallery is booked throughout the year, too. Both universities find a host of spaces for exhibitions throughout the year. Both students and working artists show their work in local coffeehouses, restaurants and businesses. Three Denton companies produce complete theater seasons. The longestrunning companies in Denton, Denton Community Theatre and Music Theatre of Denton, stage plays and musicals on the Campus Theatre stage. Denton Community Theatre’s outreach to children and young people – Denton Community Theatre’s Theatre School – produces several productions a year. Sundown Collaborative Theatre, the city’s actor-driven company, produced devised and traditional theater. Festivals Denton knows how to throw a party. The Denton Arts & Jazz Festival marks the beginning of Spring, and the North Texas State Fair & Rodeo is the city’s unofficial start of fall. There’s more to Denton’s festival calendar than these two major, historical events. Thin Line Thin Line, the sole documentary film festival in Texas, brings more than 60 documentary films to Denton each February – and each year, some of the films are related to Denton, made by local filmmakers and include Denton residents. This year, the festival grew into a film and music festival. Keep tabs on the event at www.thinlinefilmfest.com. 35 Denton This festival is the wunderkind of the local festival scene. Though the festival began about 15 years ago as a Dentonspecific party and showcase in Austin during South By Southwest Music Festival, it grew in what felt like a single bound in 2010. The four-day walkable music festival is concentrated in downtown Denton venues, with two outdoor stages. It’s a smorgasbord of music – experimental, rock, pop, indie and hip-hop – that has brought international attention to the event and to the culture in Denton that made the city a viable setting for a notable music festival.

The festival took this year off, but has announced that it will return for four days before Spring Break in 2015. Newcomers to town might have noticed colorful, music-oriented murals on Hickory and Fry streets. Those murals are part of the partnership between the festival organizers and Denton businesses. Denton Arts & Jazz Festival This festival is held on the last weekend of each April. Hundreds of fine artists set up booths to sell their wares, a community stage and children’s art tent keeps families busy and six stages keep the music going Friday night, and all day on Saturday and Sunday. The headliners play everything from blues to jazz. The festival has drawn record numbers – in part because of the music, in part because of the art – and in part because the festival is free. North Texas State Fair & Rodeo This annual event starts on August 15 and continues through Aug. 23 at the North Texas State Fairgrounds, 2217 N. Carroll Blvd. The rodeo, livestock show, exhibition and concert series takes place over two weekends. The family event features traditional bull and bronco riding, as well as mutton busting and other contests for the younger set. The music lineup features: Jason Eady, Will Hoge, Mike Ryan, Uncle Lucius, Spivey Crossing, Cody Johnson and JB and the Moonshine Band. Oaktopia Music & Cultural Festival

This unique festival was born last year. Organizers have already announced this year’s lineup: Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic; XXYYXX; Immortal Technique; Baths; Brave Combo and more. In other words, Oaktopia is aimed at a college age audience, but is sure to attract serious music fans and festival lovers. The fest is scheduled for Sept. 19-20 in downtown Denton. When compared to the priciest music festival in Denton, 35 Denton, Oaktopia clocks in at an affordable $25 to $30. Tickets are on sale at http://www.oaktopiafest.com/. Industrial Street International Pop Festival This local festival is a small, one-day concert that celebrates the music of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Also known as “Geezerpalooza,” the event is scheduled for Oct. 19. Expect tribute bands and more than one joke about rocking while being “old.” Details are still in the works. Denton’s Day of the Dead This eclectic event is a celebration of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos in music, a street fair and – racing coffins. The free festival features a pumpkin patch of carnival games for childrens, vendor booths, concerts and a circus freakshow. The most popular part of the festival? The coffin races. Competing teams make soapbox cars – some look more like coffins than others – and race for bragging rights down Hickory Street. The event ends with Cirque du Horror, a Halloween musical variety show, after a twilight parade.

Discovering Denton County

47

Yes, they’re from here Many well-known musicians are still creating their art here, kept happy by Denton’s music-savvy audiences. Other renowned musicians spent their formative years in Denton and return to perform on occasion, thanks in part to the long tradition of excellence at the University of North Texas College of Music. All of these artists may not be as well known as Pat Boone, Don Henley, Sara Hickman and Roy Orbison, who called Denton home at one time, but this primer of who’s who and what’s what should boost basic music literacy for natives and newbies alike.

Brave Combo. The ageless ensemble mixes up polka with other genres like no other band on earth. Whether nabbing a Grammy or a feature spot on The Simpsons, their intelligent and fun-lov ing approach to music makes the party when they are there, and thankfully the band is still based in Denton. The band is famous in town for their annual performance on the final afternoon of the Denton Arts & Jazz Fest in which Denton youths gather for a massive “Chicken Dance” and “Polka Mosh”. Bob Dorough. Jazz fans know him as an extraordinary pianist and vocal stylist, and millions more don’t realize they know him as composer of “Conjunction

Junction,” “I’m Just a Bill” and the many other ABC Saturday morning cartoon hits of Schoolhouse Rock. This former UNT jazz student started writing the education jingles in the 1970s. One O’Clock Lab Band. It’s hard to know whether this group is the headwaters or flagship of Denton music, so influential is this incubator for jazz artists. Named for the time of day that the band rehearses in Kenton Hall inside the UNT Music Building, the band forever renews itself by asking members to audition for their spot each semester. Wherever good jazz is being made in this country or abroad, there is likely an alumnus of this band. Norah Jones. A graduate of Booker T. Washington Performing Arts High School in Dallas, Jones spent just two years at UNT in the jazz program, but her Texas roots run so deep that her music, like Brave Combo’s, crosses genres. Jones included UNT alumnus Tony Scherr on her highly successful album Feels Like Home and was even named an honorary chairman of the “Save Fry Street” campaign. Tom Malone. A former member of the Two O’Clock Lab Band, Malone stands in the back row of the band on The Late

Show with David Letterman. Sometimes dressed as outrageously as bandleader Paul Schaffer, Malone plays trombone in the band, although he also played saxophone in the Two O’Clock. It was a call from Saturday Night Live that got his television and movie career launched. Malone wrote the chart for Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s first Blues Brothers skit on SNL, and Malone stayed with the Blue Brothers. Lyle Mays. The piano behind the guitar in the Pat Metheny Group, Lyle Mays was also the genius behind the band when the One O’ Clock Lab Band received Grammy nominations for its Lab ’75 and Lab ’76 albums. His solo album, called Solo Improvisations for Expanded Piano, (Warner Bros.) capitalizes on his intuitive strengths, but he can also be heard along with Meryl Streep’s narrative on Tale of Peter Rabbit/ Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher (Windham Hill). Polyphonic Spree. Tim Delaughter is the brain behind this choral pop group that got its start at the Fry Street Fair. The group, whose total membership is an ever-moving target (including famous Dallas artist St. Vincent), has managed to tour with the likes of David Bowie and The Divine Comedy. They continue to make a splash wherever they are by taking the stage dressed in choir robes and performing psychedelically happy music. Patricia Racette. She came to the University of North Texas aspiring to be a jazz singer, but after a voice faculty member, the late Pattye Johnstone, heard her sing, she coaxed Racette toward classical training. She left as the school’s most promising opera star, landing roles as Violetta and Mimi with the New York Metropolitan and San Francisco operas. Her performance in the title role of Emmeline, an opera by Tobias Picker, was broadcast on PBS.

Phyllis George. Crowned Miss America in 1971, this former Denton resident is one of three Miss Texas contestants who

went on to win the national title. George went on to work for CBS as a sportsbroadcaster, the first woman to do so, and also has written several books. Shirley Cothran-Barret. This former Denton resident won the Miss America title in 1975. She made Denton her home until recently. She now lectures for Christian women’s groups. Larry McMurtry. He graduated from The University of North Texas with a bachelor of the arts in English in 1958 with a bachelor of arts in English in 1958. The author of several well-known books, including The Last Picture Show and Lonesome Dove, he has returned to Archer City and runs a large bookstore. Anne Rice. Another best-selling author who attended UNT, Rice was at the school from 1960 to 1962. Now a New Orleans resident, Rice is known as a teller of supernatural tales. “Mean” Joe Greene. Football Hall of Famer Green was the top defensive line pick in the 1969 draft after he finished his studies at UNT. His nickname is somewhat prophetic, as UNT has changed its mascot from the Eagles to the Mean Green. Dr. Phil McGraw. Best known as one of Oprah Winfrey’s gurus, McGraw managed to get his own television show after several appearances on Oprah. But long before he became a guest in millions of homes, he received his master’s degree and his doctorate in psychology at UNT.

Argyle focuses on business development, education By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Argyle is an energetic community focused on growth, and its residents do so by balancing a strong focus on business development and top-notch education with faith and friendly country living. Founded in 1881, Argyle is home to hundreds of small businesses, four schools in the Argyle Independent School District and Liberty Christian School. The city has established police and fire departments, a municipal court, seven churches and is strategically located just south of Denton on U.S. Highay 377, with Fort Worth to the west and Dallas to the east. It also neighbors the growing community of Lantana. The city celebrates its residents with various seasonal events that provide great exposure and a big boost in community spirit throughout the year. Some of those past events have included sponsoring the nationally-recognized Argyle Bluegrass Festival and organizing smaller events like the Pumpkin Express for children. Argyle’s residential community ranges from modest smaller lots to expansive custom homes on multiple acres of wooded lots. What this has done is attract an increasing number of big-city residents who crave the country atmosphere, and as a result, the population has increased from about 125 in the 1960s to 3,282 by 2010. The Argyle Independent School District -- comprised of Argyle High School, Argyle Middle School, Argyle Intermediate and Hilltop Elementary -is consistently a leader both academically and athletically. Aubrey sees change as growth continues

By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Aubrey has a rich history as a farming community and is considered by many to be the “horse capital” of Texas. Located 12 miles northeast of Denton in the U.S. Highway 377 corridor and along U.S. Highway 380 in Denton County, the city is home to many horse ranches and over the years has maintained its small-town feel as the gateway to Ray Roberts Lake. Convenience to I-35 leads to growth in Corinth By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Corinth is one of the four communities that make up what is known as the Lake Cities area. Located on the I-35 corridor along the shores of Lewisville Lake between Denton and Dallas, Corinth, Lake Dallas, Shady Shores and Hickory Creek offer the perfect combination of a small-town atmosphere with easy access to all that the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex has to offer. Corinth -- founded in 1880 -- is the largest of the four communities with a population of 19,935 as of the 2010 census and is second only to Lake Dallas in age. Corinth does not offer its own school system; it is served by both the Denton and Lake Dallas Independent School Districts. Yet, Lake Dallas High School and Corinth Elementary are both located within Corinth city limits and the city is home to one of two branch campuses of North Central Texas College (the other being Flower Mound). CoServ Electric and the headquarters for the Denton

County Republican Party are also located in Corinth. D Magazine had Corinth ranked 24th on its 2012 list of best places to live in the DFW suburbs. Hickory Creek was ranked 14th and Lake Dallas rounded out the top 30. Other features of Corinth include Oakmont Country Club, which boasts 170 acres of rolling hills and a par 72 golf course. Corinth also has its own 182-acre community park and is just five minutes from Lewisville Lake. The area has grown considerably in recent years, not only residentially with upscale housing projects and a multitude of apartment-living options, but also commercially. The Atrium Medical Center of Corinth opened in November 2008 as a long-term acute care facility and serves the major hospitals in the area. The Denton County Transportation Authority commuter rail system passes through Corinth, and as recently as April, there were discussions of bringing a Bucee’s Travel Center to Corinth.

Hickory Creek combines business with pleasure By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Hickory Creek is another fast-growing member of the Lake Cities community. Established in 1963, the town — which is located 30 miles north of downtown Dallas near the neighboring cities of Lake Dallas and Corinth — went from a population of 219 to 3,247 by the 2010 census. Tree City USA -- a tree planting and tree care program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation for cities and towns in the United States -- recognized Hickory Creek once again in 2013 for its commitment to effective urban forest management. The town has a generous blend of parks and nature trails, subdivisions, family farms, boat ramps and businesses. Commercial development, in particular, has contributed to helping Hickory Creek maintain one of the lowest property tax rates in the Lake Cities. Some of the businesses now located in Hickory Creek include Wal-Mart, Chili’s,

Welcome to Krum. Over the last 44 years, the northward sprawl of the Dallas-Fort Worth area has brought home seekers out in droves to this rural community, increasing the population from a meager 400 residents in 1970 to 4,157 as of the 2010 census. Perhaps the biggest reason for that has been easy access to Interstate 35, which has made commuting to city jobs convenient. Located seven miles northwest of Denton off FM1173 in west central Denton County, Krum is 47 miles northwest of Dallas and just 42 miles northeast of Fort Worth. Yet, Krum holds true to its small-town atmosphere and is known for its rolling pastures, prairie skies and spacious country living. There is also the Krum Heritage Museum, which continues to highlight the city’s rich history. The city’s humble beginnings started with the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railways, which ran a line through western Denton County in 1884. Two years later, a town site was created. By 1892, Krum had a population of 75 and by 1900 it was thriving with several businesses, four churches and a school. That same year, the city reportedly held the record for being the world’s greatest inland wheat market. According to the

Lake Dallas known for its community spirit By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Lake Dallas is the oldest of the four Lake Cities communities (dating to 1852) and is characterized as a charming lakeside community 10 miles south of Denton on the shores of Lewisville Lake. The city, which had a reported population of 7,105 at the 2010 census, has gained some much-needed attention from developers, business owners and residents in recent years with the addition of a new bridge linking Swisher Road in Lake Dallas and Garza Lane in Little Elm. There was a similar bridge that connected Lake Dallas -- formerly known as Garza -- with Little Elm in the 1920s, but it was removed more than 60 years ago when the lake was expanded. With the addition of the new bridge in 2009, a vital link has been created between the two cities and plans are already in place to revitalize downtown Lake Dallas, according to the city’s website. In 2012, Lake Dallas was ranked 30th by D Magazine on a list of the best places

to live in the DFW suburbs and over the years has been home to several notable residents, including members of the popular Von Erich wrestling family and former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek. The city is also home for the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Texas. Lake Dallas is known for its community spirit and attracts visitors from all over for annual events such as its Mardi Gras parade and July 4 celebration. The city has also partnered with local businesses to put on holiday events for children and other smaller events throughout the summer months. The city currently has five parks: Willow Grove Park, City Park, Community Park, Thousand Oaks Park and River Oaks Park. The community is served by the Lake Dallas Independent School District, which includes Lake Dallas High School, Lake Dallas Middle School, Lake Dallas Elementary, Shady Shores Elementary and Corinth Elementary. The Lake Dallas mascot is the Falcon.

Pilot Point mixes old with new

By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Just 18 miles north of Denton off U.S. Highway 377 is Pilot Point — the oldest settlement in Denton County. Dating to 1845, Pilot Point is considered a site of historical significance and has been designated as such by the Texas Historical Commission, which administers the National Register of Historic Places for sites in Texas. The Pilot Point Church of Christ, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, the Pilot Point Post-Signal (newspaper) and Skinner Cemetery are also sites of historical significance. A series of memorial markers permanently installed in town square commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in military service during the 20th century. Pilot Point was originally nicknamed “the Pilot’s Point” for being the highest point in the area. Its population was 1,108 in the 1930s and the community had 45 businesses. The population grew

to 3,856 at the 2010 census. Currently, Pilot Point offers a mixture of both old and new. Shopping centers, a top-flight medical facility, a small-town library, newer residential lots and multiple longstanding churches have made this city an endearing part of the North Texas landscape. Pilot Point is served by the Pilot Point Independent School District, which is made up of Pilot Point High School, Pilot Point Elementary, Pilot Point

In 2013, the Bearcats softball team won the Class 2A state title. The football team, which last won a title in 2009, was once led by legendary coach G.A. Moore. Location contributes to Sanger’s growth By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Sanger is one of the fastest growing cities in North Texas. Located in north central Denton County 10 miles north of Denton off Interstate 35, Sanger has grown from a population of 2,574 in 1980 -- an increase of just over 60 percent since 1970 -- to 6,916 as of the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1886 as a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad and was named after the Sanger family, one of Santa Fe’s bigger customers that just so happened to own stores in Waco and Dallas. The cattle industry also contributed to the town’s beginnings, and to this day, cattle and other livestock continue to be raised in Sanger. Facing a rapidly declining railroad system in the early 1900s, the area caught a break when a state highway connecting Sanger with Dallas was built in 1920. The area grew considerably from there and its downtown businesses continue to thrive. According to a demographics report on the Sanger Chamber of

Commerce website, there are 1,158 businesses in Sanger and the unemployment rate is 7.40 percent. The oldest business was Wilson Lumber Company, which was founded in the 1890s and was eventually sold in 2001 and renamed Denton County Builder’s Supply. Sanger’s location makes it a great place to settle down or visit without feeling like you are too far from other North Texas attractions. Ray Roberts Lake is four miles to the east while Texas Motor Speedway and WinStar Casino are a mere 20 miles away. Sanger also offers its own youth sports organization and other recreational parks like Sanger Sports Park and Railroad Baseball Park. Seven schools make up the Sanger Independent School District, including Sanger and Linda Tutt High Schools, Sanger Middle School, Clear Creek Intermediate, Chisholm Trail and Butterfield Elementary Schools and a sixth-grade campus. The Sanger High School mascot is the Indian.

Shady Shores offers quiet lifestyle By Steve Gamel For the Denton Record-Chronicle

Shady Shores is easily the smallest of the four Lake Cities communities in that it covers just 2.9 square miles of property, doesn’t have a single stop light or convenience store and boasted a population of 2,612 at the 2010 census. Yet, it is a thriving community adjacent to Lake Dallas and its residents enjoy the quiet lifestyle that comes with ready access to the lake. According to the town website, a subdivision called Shady Shores began construction in 1932, but the city wasn’t actually incorporated until 1960. Until 2000, when tax collection began, money for road repairs and police and fire protection came from fees from building permits, franchise fees, pancake suppers and donations from the residents.
