Art for all ages

Council opens exhibits for young readers, and second-act creatives

T

he Greater Denton Arts Council recently opened exhibitions in the Meadows and Gough galleries at the Center for the Visual Arts.

The solo show “Blissful Blues and Pointillism Purples: Susan Mapes Kemper” will be in the Gough Gallery through Dec. 28.

Kemper looks to her surroundings for inspiration, interpreting them in aggressive colors and straightforward renderings. Her muses are plants, animals and the stuff of domestic life.

The artist leans toward humor, as in her painting Hiding From Bath Time. A worried dog sits stock-still beneath a shrub of fearless color.

Kemper made her living as a science teacher. It was only after retirement that she took up the brush and began making images in a semi-pointillist style — meaning she uses dots of color to build representational images.

“Like most folk artists, I am not a professionally trained artist, and have developed this

Lobel is well known as a children’s book illustrator, with credits for Alison’s Zinnia, Away From Home and three

works inspired by her cat, Nini.

It was with her childhood memoir, No Pretty Pictures: A Child of War, that Lobel earned a spot among the six finalists for the National Book Award.

This exhibit, organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene, will be in the gallery

through Jan. 18.

Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m.

Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free.

The arts center, located at 400 E. Hickory St., will be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays.

Forgettable name, indelible music Holiday special: Bar Band and other locals cover the songs of The Band

pend enough time gigging with Denton indie bands and you’ll discover one of the most influential acts claimed by local musicians.

No, not the Beatles (though the Fab Four are beloved here).

The Rolling Stones, you say?

Close, but no.

The band in question is …

The Band. As in the roots-rock outfit launched from North America by Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson.

On Friday, Denton’s enduring tribute group — generically named Bar Band — will play a marathon gig of The Band’s beefy catalog.

“We’d done a show of Bruce Springsteen covers and later the Rolling Stones. But I’d wanted to do a show covering The Band for a long time,” said Grady Sandlin, a busy local drummer and the stage dad for Bar Band.

“I started talking to Dan [Mojica] about wanting to do this, and I think it was his idea to book the show near Thanksgiving.”

A post-Thanksgiving show aligns with Martin Scorsese’s documentary film of The Band’s final show, The Last Waltz.

The Band made about 10 studio albums, and collaborated with Bob Dylan on Planet Waves and The Basement Tapes.

Sandlin, Bar Band’s drummer, was a fan of The Band for a long time. Then he saw The Last Waltz and slipped closer to disciple mode.

“In 2003 or ’04, I saw the documentary and after that, I was hooked. It was one of those situations where I’m having to find everything they ever did. I get kind of obsessed,” Sandlin said.

Bar Band’s bassist Tony Ferraro said the admiration for The Band is spread fairly evenly throughout the cover band.

“We’re not putting a lot of pressure on ourselves to get down every last thing,” Ferraro said. “One of the romantic things about The Band is they were crazy. They were a little sloppy sometimes. It’s not like we’re trying to get every last note exact or just so. Sure, you want to honor the material because you love the music. But not to the point of copying the records.”

Sandlin seconded that

notion.

“I’m not so much interested in the mimic aspect of covering music,” Sandlin said. “It’s more about the musicians interpreting the music by this group. I think that’s much more interesting. All of us love this music, and each of us will bring that to the performance.”

The show will be in two sets.

Sandlin handpicked the music from “a really long playlist I had to cut down” to plan a concert of familiar songs, Bob Dylan collaborations and music from Levon Helm’s solo material.

“The whole night will play out as a story for us,” Ferraro said. “The show’s put together carefully.”

Sandlin said Bar Band won’t play a few songs that fans might expect to hear. But he’s itching to trot out a few other numbers for an audience.

“I’d have to say I’m looking forward to ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,’ and I’m really excited about doing ‘We Can Talk,’” Sandlin said. “Some of them are really hard and they’re a real pain …”

“Yeah,” Ferraro said. “Those are the songs that are going to explode on the stage.”

‘Playbook’ uses instability as an excuse for histrionics

Silver Linings Playbook never lacks for energy, as the abrasive new romantic comedy finds discomforting laughs by poking fun at people unable to control their own overactivity.

Writer-director David O. Russell works from Matthew Quick’s novel about a man with bipolar disorder, an often irresistible cinematic wild card allowing directors and actors to indulge in extremes.

Russell shamelessly steers his overstimulated characters through a series of artificial disasters, situations and confrontations. The director finds drama once again from grating sequences filled with unbalanced combative characters, just as he has in many of his films, such as 2010’s The

Fighter and 2004’s I Heart Huckabees. Reportedly, Russell’s aborted project Nailed would have probed similar ground.

The allure to actors of playing such characters as those found in Silver Linings is apparent, as they receive license to cover a wide range of emotions without appearing contradictory. But they can seem artificially contrived, as does Pat Solitano (Bradley

Cooper), who leaves a Baltimore mental facility after eight months of incarceration because of erratic violent behavior.

He returns to Philadelphia to live under a court order with his doting mother (Australian marvel Jacki Weaver) and his Philadelphia Eagles-obsessed father, Pat Sr. (Robert De Niro).

The father’s constant footballthemed rants and the son’s immediate refusal to take medication conveniently shove the dramatics into confrontational territory.

The obligatory romantic element arrives in the form of Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), another medication-taking wild card who happens to be the younger sister of Pat’s estranged wife. A movie-cute romance develops despite its

ical failure on a flight to Atlanta forces him to pull off a daring crash landing, and he’s hailed as a hero for saving so many lives. But the subsequent federal investigation also reveals his rampant substance abuse.

The fact that the film’s grand climax lies on, first, a dance contest, and then, the outcome of an Eagles-Cowboys football game, is indicative of the overall vacuity.

For their part, the actors adequately perform their showy parts, delivering rapid speeches with overlapping dialogue. City lights Homegrown performers shine when Denton flips the switch on the holiday season

Denton has a date with twinkling lights, a night full of music and piping hot wassail.

The Denton Holiday Lighting Festival is the night when city leaders join merry musicmakers, tiny dancers and loads of families to flip the switch.

Come 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 30, Denton will be wearing wreaths, lights and a festive air for the holidays.

This year marks the second year that the Denton Holiday Festival Association will start the holidays on a Friday — a move the group made last year to encourage more families to step out for carols, community performances and visits with Santa Claus.

The local Convention and Visitors Bureau again entices Denton’s neighbors to the south with a A-train campaign advertising the festival.

The party starts with music by the Denton Community

Band — what would the holiday lighting be without the Christmas carol sing-along led

by Carol Lynn Mizell? — and ends with more music.

This is the second festival with David Pierce as the man at the bandstand of the Denton Holiday Music Spectacular.

This year, the Denton musician and composer said the band will roll out some dance tunes.

“Last year was definitely a learning experience,” said Pierce, who composed and

arranged the music for the finale of the Holiday Lighting Festival. “Everything I set out to accomplish — I noticed when things would hit a lull. I watched the pacing of the show and enjoyed some of the really beautiful songs.”

The 2011 festival was the first time that the concert finale offered a smorgasbord of local talent — of the Grammy-winning and indie sort.

The army invading the United States in Red Dawn, an ill-advised remake of the campy 1984 original, was changed in post-production from Chinese to North Korean.

With a few snips here, a few redubs there, the filmmakers reedited and re-shot, fearful of offending China and its increasingly important moviegoing market.

But why stop there? Can’t we blithely make any nation our enemy for a movie’s sake? Let’s try a version with Iran! And don’t we have reason to be suspicious of Sweden? Do we really know what’s in all those giant Ikea stores?

The ridiculous Red Dawn is the supreme example of Hollywood’s Cold War nostalgia, when the Russkies offered up an easy, de facto villain. Today’s terrorism paranoia, apparently, is too complex and too faceless for some. No, we need a clearcut enemy. Do you have something in red?

The awkward updating of Red Dawn came after MetroGoldwyn-Mayer, which had

produced the film back in 2009, went bankrupt. Not surprisingly, the market was weak for a film that reportedly cost $60 million to make and suggested modern China was the equivalent of Cold War-era Soviet Union. So the switch was made and distributor FilmDistrict picked it up.

Like the original, Red Dawn is about a band of high-schoolers whose hometown (now Spokane, Wash., instead of small-town Colorado) is suddenly taken over by parachut-

ing foreign troops. With most adults locked up and military response not coming, the kids develop into a gang of insurgents, dubbing themselves the Wolverines.

Back in 1984, the kids were played by brat pack all-stars: Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey. The film (the first PG-13 rated movie, incidentally) was grade-A ’80s kitsch, a movie that captured the imaginations of kids growing up amid Cold War fears.

returns as James Bond in the 23rd film based on 007’s exploits. Britain’s MI6 comes under attack, with M (Judi Dench) as the chief target. Bond finds and brings back the villain (Javier Bardem), but that just sets the stage for further action and adventure. Between the action sequences, director Sam Mendes takes time to build a personal drama that distinguishes this Bond film from its predecessors. Rated PG-13, 143 minutes. — B.A. Taken 2 (##1/2) In this repetitive sequel, Liam Neeson again plays former CIA agent Bryan Mills. The father (Rade Serbedzija) of the men Mills killed in the original now seeks revenge, which results in more of the same: Mills using his detecting and tracking skills to ferret out locations, beating up and killing an army of men, and taking part in endless car chases, this time through Istanbul.

The main difference is that mother (Famke Janssen) and daughter (Maggie Grace) get to participate.

Lucky them. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes.

Dawn — Part 2 (###1/2) Director Bill Condon’s final Twilight movie dares to have a little fun. Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) are now married vampires and parents to a daughter (Mackenzie Foy). With the help of the bloodsucking Cullen clan and vampires from around the globe, they must band together with Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and his werewolf buddies to protect the half-human, half-vampire spawn from the evil and suspicious Volturi. Rated PG-13, 115 minutes. — AP Wreck-It Ralph Disney’s new animated film mixes retro eye-candy for grown-ups and a thrilling, approachable storyline for the tykes. Shorttempered, sledgehammer-fisted bad guy Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) journeys to Game Central Station, the gateway to every game in an arcade, to prove he can be a hero. Director Rich Moore (The Simpsons) ably manipulates the action by tantalizingly shifting the characters between game worlds. With Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman Rated PG, 93 minutes. — HR

The new Red Dawn has no such context. The implausibility is dizzying, all around.

The cast is centered on two brothers: the returning Iraq veteran Jed (Chris Hemsworth, the Snow White and the Huntsman star) and high school quarterback Matt Eckert (Josh Peck). They’re the leaders of the Wolverines, whose ranks include Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Adrianne Palicki (TV’s Friday Night Lights), Connor Cruise and Edwin Hodge.

From a mountain cabin and other woodsy lairs, they launch guerilla warfare on the occupying North Koreans. Director Dan Bradley, a former stunt coordinator, can mount a decent shootout scene, but doesn’t stage the action well, leaving scenes looking like they were set in the same few downtown blocks. Still, there’s no telling how Bradley had to alter his footage. (No one had it harder than actor Will Yun Lee, who, as the occupying commander, had to redo his lines in Korean.)

In recent years, home invasion movies have been made frequently, only with aliens.

The appeal, as one of the characters in Red Dawn says, is that defending one’s homeland makes “more sense” in a time filled with indirect military aims.

But such fantasies — here played out by delusional teenage football players — are all the more dubious given that the U.S. was engaged in two (real) wars at the time of filming. In Red Dawn, Afghanistan and Iraq go hardly mentioned, replaced by a game of toy soldiers with make-believe foes.

Bonnie Norris scored the crowd’s affection with “Santa Baby,” and Jeffrey Barnes quieted the crowd with “Santa Got Lost in Texas.” Bubba Hernandez showed off his bluesy voice with an R&B number, and Sarah Jaffe sang Pierce’s moody arrangement of “O Holy Night.”

Steve Wiest, the director of the University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band, got off to a pitchy start — thanks to a damp and trombone-molesting cold front — but he warmed up and made up for it with his jazzy solo. It was a portion of Denton’s Midlake that gifted the revelers with a rousing and hopeful rendition of John Lennon’s “So This Is Christmas (War Is Over)” before sending Denton holiday revelers home.

Much of the lineup returns to next week’s Holiday Music Spectacular. Pierce will conduct the 11-piece Holiday Lighting Orchestra.

Paul Slavens, a Denton musical institution and KKXTFM radio host, returns to the lineup of featured performers.

Last year he did a reading of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

“I loved Paul doing The Grinch. … We zipped through it,” Pierce said. “It’s not a short piece, but Paul was great. And I’d love for The Grinch to become a big visual thing for the kids.”

Slavens isn’t just a versatile musician who plays with a number of local acts — he’s got enough character voices to supply a radio play.

Members of Midlake will be back. Barnes and Wiest return, too. Pierce recruited Slobberbone singer-guitarist Brent Best to the stage.

“I was talking to Brent about doing the show, and he said, ‘I even have this holiday song called “The Gum Drop.” I could do that if you wanted.’ Of course I wanted him to,” Pierce said.

If he gets his fair share of Denton magic on stage, Pierce said musicians might start offering to perform at the lighting.

“I envisioned this thing as more or less a concert where these talented musicians who live in Denton perform holiday
