“Cloth Talks” includes garments and textiles of West Africa, showing how patterns and symbols tell meaningful stories about the artists who create the cloth and the people who wear it. The exhibit is now on view at UNT on the Square.

Rich designs speak volumes Textiles, songs from West Africa to fill art venue

A

nyone who’s ever watched artists screenprinting designs onto shirts and paper might marvel at just how little of a difference there is in some West African textile techniques. Denton fiber artist Elise Ridenour will introduce local art and fabric printing buffs to West African textiles today at UNT on the Square, at a reception for the exhibit “Cloth Talks.” After the artist talks, international phenomenon and palmwine musician Koo Nimo will perform songs from his homeland of Ghana. For anyone who might dismiss Nimo as another egghead music man invited to enrich egghead music students, well, look up his latest album, Highlife Roots Revival, on Spotify or Pandora. Nimo is as dynamic and magical as American folk icons.

Ghanaian folk musician Koo Nimo performs tonight at UNT on the Square. Nimo, who is a guest artist and scholar of the University of North Texas College of Music, will perform after a gallery talk by Denton fiber artist Elise Ridenour. As an exhibit, “Cloth Talks” is a rich and eloquent meditation of the indomitable creative impulse of West Africa. The textiles are equal parts simple and loquacious; big drapes of bright, heavy fabric bear traditional symbols that, taken together, can preach a sermon or tell a story about the man, woman or tribe who makes it.

There are deeper, darker pieces — the size of super-sized king bed comforters — embellished with dyes and inks that whisper their messages. And there are garments, a logical step that observes how art informs fashion, and how fashion comments on class and culture. Gallery visitors can study a wall full of hand-hewn

stamps, wrought from chunky gourds and rendered into tools that hand an artistic legacy from one generation to the next. Ridenour has spent years splitting her time between Denton and Africa, and “Cloth Talks” isn’t a mere syllabus of things the artist has learned. “Cloth Talks” is a sort of journal of the artist’s heart after discovering a different continent, a different people who share her drive to make fiber sing. True to form for the University of North Texas Institute for the Advancement of the Arts, UNT on the Square accompanies the textiles with placards that explain how West African artists make the cloths. Plenty of video is available. Screen-printing fans might get entranced as an artist scrapes ink onto a framed screen and presses images onto cloth. Ridenour discusses the exhibit at 7 p.m. today, with Nimo performing at 7:30 p.m. UNT on the Square is located at 109 N. Elm St. — Lucinda Breeding

After the zombie apocalypse, Rush Limbaugh (Stanton Brasher, center) struggles while trying to interview Ashley Olsen (Darien Gore, left) and Michele Bachmann (Jordan Desmarais) in a sketch from Fight Boy Theatre’s Sketchy People.

Break out the skewers Sketches leave no subject unturned in quest for humor By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

Rick Perry, Rush Limbaugh and Michele Bachmann walk into a bar. Yeah, that’s kind of stretching it, but Denton independent theater company Fight Boy Theatre is going into local bars with its latest production — including the three national political figures portrayed by the players of Sketchy People. Fight Boy Theatre has dabbled in risky (and risqué) theater, and produced a smidgen of male burlesque dancing. Now, the inexhaustible company is rolling its dice on Sketchy People, a sketch comedy show performed in two acts at local pubs Dan’s Silverleaf and Hailey’s Club and at the PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center, with shows through the month and into October. The company is helping writer, musician and comedian

SKETCHY PEOPLE What: a sketch comedy show produced by Fight Boy Theatre When: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial St.; 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2830 at the PointBank Black Box Performing Arts Center, 318 E. Stanton Brasher bring a dream to life. “Travis [Barth, actor and writer] and I started talking about doing a sketch comedy show at least a year ago,” said Brasher, the co-producer and co-writer of Sketchy People. Barth, a co-producer and cowriter, said he thought the idea could end up on stage. He also said he thought Fight Boy was the local independent theater company to stage it. “It’s so much easier,” Barth said of writing short, complete scenes instead of a two-act play. “Way easier. When you have as

many people sitting around the table as we did, you have too many ideas to use.” Brasher said the moment indeed seemed right when Fight Boy accepted the pitch for Sketchy People. “Everyone came to the table with an idea for a skit,” he said. “The hard part was deciding which ideas to develop, really.” Sketchy People is a series of oft gutter-mouthed scenes that satirize popular culture, politics and people in the 11-person cast. For example: A couple breaks up as the Titanic sinks, a group of hillbillies can’t stop loving mayonnaise, and Rush Limbaugh tries to get Ashley Olsen, Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann to stay on topic — brain cloning — after a zombie apocalypse. Barth and Brasher said they tested the sketches on anyone who’d sit still to read a short script or watch a comedy video. “We bombarded people with it,” Barth said. “We totally did. When people came over, we’d be like ‘Hey, come read this.’ If they didn’t laugh, we talked about it. If they did laugh, we knew we had something.”

Nadezhda Markina, right, plays the title role in Elena, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, in an undated handout image. Zeitgeist Films

Russian studies By Boo Allen Film Critic

Maybe it’s because of the deliberate pacing, or maybe it’s the cleverly conceived, ambivalent ending, but, for whatever reason, the new Russian film Elena is the type of movie that would never be made in this country. And, if made, it would probably have to fight to find room in a multiplex filled with car crashes, spaceships and cuddly animated animals. Elena is a complex character study, one that seems to suggest, contrary to Dostoevsky’s imag-

OPENING FRIDAY Finding Nemo 3D A 3-D version of

Carefully crafted ‘Elena’ a complex portrait of a woman and her actions

also before it is even considered. Zvyagintsev trusts his audience, as he slowly builds a portrait of Elena (Nadezhda Markina) and her personal life, her relations and obligations, as well as her tenuous situation at her palatial Moscow apartment with her older husband, Vladimir (Andrey Smirnov). In what seems an innocuous deception, she hides from him that she secretly visits her son by a previous marriage. But once there, the son badgers her to wheedle money from Vladimir for her irresponsible

grandson’s college tuition. From here, the plot kicks into high gear even if the action does not. Elena and her husband argue about the money for the grandson, as it becomes evident that Vladimir, while not portrayed as a bad person, believes the expenditure will be a waste of money. And he’s probably right. Zvyagintsev deftly draws small character traits for Elena. These minute touches lead to a better and fuller understanding of her when she diverts from what had previously been seen

as the quality of her character. So by the time she executes what looks like a daring scheme to solve her problems, it looks natural. While Zvyagintsev adds to his building portrait of Elena, he also constructs an increasingly nihilistic portrait of the extended family. Eventually the no-exit portrait of the family becomes clear: No matter what Elena does and no matter what crime it looks like she might get away with, she, and her family, will still be stuck in a hell of their own making.

may seem heady and intentionally disorienting and hard to follow at first — until you realize it’s really about drug addiction. That may help as you compare it with the first three films in the series that starred Matt Damon. Jeremy Renner stars as Aaron Cross, who finds he’s the target of a legitimate threat when the supersecret government spy program he’s a part of hastily gets shut down. With Rachel Weisz. Rated PG13, 135 minutes. — The Associated Press Branded In a dystopian future ruled by mega-corporations, a man tries to unravel a global mind-control conspiracy based on subliminal advertising. With Ed Stoppard, Leelee Sobieski and Jeffrey Tambor. Written and directed by Jamie Bradshaw and Alexander Doulerain. Rated R, 106 minutes. — Lat The Campaign When a long-running congressman commits a public gaffe ahead of an election, two wealthy CEOs arrange for a puppet candidate to challenge him. With Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis and Katherine LaNasa. Directed by Jay Roach. Rated R, 85 minutes. — LAT Celeste and Jesse Forever ( ) Sporadically funny but ultimately slight romantic comedy built on the single premise of a married couple (Andy Samberg and co-writer Rashida Jones) who work better apart than together. Once apart, their relationship becomes close enough to annoy friends and family. But inevitably, feelings for other people begin to complicate matters. Lee Toland Krieger directs, letting his likable actors carry the load. Rated R, 91 minutes. — Boo Allen The Cold Light of Day While on a sailing vacation in Spain, a man has his world turned upside down when his family is kidnapped by intelligence agents searching for a mysterious briefcase. With Henry Cavill, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Echegui and Bruce Willis. Directed by Mabrouk El Mechri. Rated PG-13, 93 minutes. — LAT The Dark Knight Rises ( 1/2 ) Director Christopher Nolan directs the last of his three Batman films with Christian Bale again playing the dark knight. A villain (Tom Hardy) steals a nuclear weapon and threatens to blow up Gotham, while several other plot points play out in this overwritten opus. Anne Hathaway, as an undesignated Catwoman, and Marion Cottillard appear as eyecandy femme fatales. A mediocre movie, not bad — just not as good as earlier versions. Rated PG-13, 164 minutes. — B.A. The Expendables 2 After a seemingly routine mission goes awry, a band of mercenaries seek revenge against an adversary and stumble onto a global threat. With Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren. Directed by Simon West. Rated R, 103 minutes. — LAT Hope Springs ( ) The first produced script from television writer and producer Vanessa Taylor

Disney Enterprises/Pixar Animation Studios

Disney-Pixar’s 2003 film Finding Nemo is being re-released in theaters in 3-D. (Alias, Game of Thrones) explores the complicated dynamics that develop over a long-term relationship with great honesty and little judgment. Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) live a sexless life in a comfortable Nebraska suburb. When Kay finally decides she’s sick of their complacent routine, she insists Arnold join her for a week of intensive couples therapy with a renowned psychologist (Steve Carell). Rated PG-13, 99 minutes. — AP Lawless ( ) If you can accept the notion that Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke could be brothers, you might be able to immerse yourself in the artfully pulpy allure of Lawless. Director John Hillcoat’s ultra-violent drama plays like a hot, sweaty, delusional fever dream and is similarly fitful. Based on The Wettest County in the World, Matt Bondurant’s fictional tale of his grandfather and his brothers, moonshine masters who kept the Virginia hills good ’n’ liquored up during Prohibition. They find their tidy little operation threatened when a corrupt Chicago lawman (Guy Pearce) swoops in to shut them down. Rated — AP The Odd Life of Timothy Green ( 1/2) Adapting a short story by Ahmet Zappa (son of Frank), writerdirector Peter Hedges (Pieces of April) tries for old-fashioned wholesomeness only to flounder amid a well-intended but sappy tale of a childless couple mystically granted a test run at parenthood. Hedges assembled an impressive cast, led by Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton as parents to a mystery boy (CJ Adams) who comes into their lives, and the actors buy into the story’s conceits wholeheartedly. But a movie’s in trouble when the characters are just as unbelievable as the premise. Rated PG, 104 minutes. — AP ParaNorman ( 1/2) No one wants to tell 60 puppet makers that their months of toil were ill spent. But the frequently wondrous and whimsical visuals far surpass the disappointing-

ly slipshod story of an 11-year-old boy named Norman (voiced by Kodi SmitMcPhee) who can see and speak to the dead. His uncle (John Goodman) bequeaths to him the duty of pacifying a witch that has haunted their town for 300 years. After failing in the ritual, Norman and an improvised gang flee from zombies, and the running around town takes up much of the film. Rated PG, 92 minutes. — AP The Possession The divorced parents of a 10-year-old girl are troubled by her increasingly erratic behavior, which seems to be linked to an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. With Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick. Directed by Ole Bornedal. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. — LAT Premium Rush ( 1/2) Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a Manhattan bike messenger given the job of delivering an envelope through the city’s crowded streets during rush hour, all while being chased by a rogue cop (Michael Shannon) and several other parties. Director and co-writer David Koepp delivers a nonstop thriller, long on action and visuals but also with an involving plot. Rated PG-13, 91 minutes. — B.A. 2016: Obama’s America This documentary, directed by conservative author Dinesh D’Souza, looks at influences in President Barack Obama’s past and what the United States might be like in four years if he is reelected. Rated PG, 89 minutes. — TDMN The Words ( 1/2) For a movie about writing, about the transporting nature of a compelling narrative, this is needlessly complicated. The Words begins with celebrated writer Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid) reading excerpts from his latest best-selling novel about Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper), who also happens to be a celebrated writer. Rory is receiving a prestigious award for his debut novel, the one that made him an instant literary sensation. Trouble is, he didn’t actually write it. With Jeremy Irons. Rated PG-13, 97 minutes. — AP

A little rain, a little pain Blues fest promises good times, bad love By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

T

he National Weather Service is predicting rain on Saturday, the opening day of the annual Denton Blues Festival. But the blues is no stranger to the rain, and blues fans should bring rain ponchos and prepare to let the music work its magic. The two-day festival, presented by the Denton Black Chamber of Commerce, brings to the stage national

and regional artists and local talent for a jam-packed weekend of heartache, pain and barbecue. The festival has vendors to feed the soul and the belly, with plenty to do for all ages. The zestiest stuff, though, will be served up on the main stage.

Curtis Salgado The Oregon native requires one thing to howl at the moon and make the harmonica wail. He needs his breath. Imagine how the blues singer, songwriter and harmonica man must have exhaled when he woke up from surgery on July 18. A surgeon removed a can-

cerous growth from one of his lungs, and doctors announced that the bluesman would make a full recovery. That wasn’t Salgado’s first tangle with the Big C. He had a similar mass removed from one of his lungs in 2008. In 2006, Salgado beat liver cancer with a transplant. So if it seems like the artist is celebrating through the sorrow on Saturday, let the man have his moment — Salgado’s got a lot of fight left in him. Salgado comes to Denton with a brand-new album, Soul Shot. Thick with triumphant brass and funky guitar riffs, the record gives Salgado plenty of room to testify about love. He starts the record with a bout of indeci-

sion, “What You Gonna Do?” and creeps into comfortable — maybe too comfortable — territory before having to put up his dukes one more time. Anything to retain the right to love the one he’s with. Salgado prefers it loud, rarely wasting his hard-won breath on a hum, whisper or a croon. Salgado says the record is a soul album, and his soul is full to bursting. The Portland blues musician opens for the headliner, Bernard Allison.

date to see Bernard Allison at the Denton Blues Festival, if for no other reason than to hear this son of the Minneapolis music scene let his musical DNA rip. Allison exemplifies a Chicago blues-influenced guitarist. This is no B.B. King — let that big man from Berclair twang and mourn on Lucille’s sturdy back. Allison, who was born and bred in Chicago, lets the instrument boogie and shimmy. Allison’s shallow tenor is hohum when compared with the cat-and-mouse game he plays with the ragtime-sounding piano. Buzz saw distortion stutters through tunes like the nine-minute-plus “It’s a Man Down There.” On the longer and labored “Bad Love,” Allison’s guitar comes through the noise like Paul Bunyan’s ax. And for blues enthusiasts who love it when the guitar responds to the singer’s call, Allison will bring home some walloping lines. Should the guitarist call up a weariness that hurts so good, he comes by it naturally. Allison grew up stealing moments on stage with his blues guitarist father, Luther. He recorded for the first time at 13, and almost the second he gripped the high school diploma out of a school leader’s hand, he was recruited to play lead guitar with Koko Taylor.

Dallas-Fort Worth musician Buddy Whittington has a lot in common with a lot of Denton indie musicians. He recalls finding his early musical inspiration on records by the Beatles. Another bit of his resume that rings true to indie rockers of Little D: lots of hard and nearly anonymous work in bands of his own making — or of his friends’ making. Weaned on the sounds of Western swing, the King and the British Invasion, Whittington learned to dance between the genres and then landed a gig with one of his influences, John Mayall. Whittington made his first solo record in 2007, and now
