IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK

Morning show

J.R. Byrd’s 10 a.m. concert closes out twilight series

Denton Time ON THE COVER

D

enton artist J.R. Byrd takes music seriously. Himself? Not so

much. The musician has been writing and performing in North Texas for a while now. He dropped his fourth solo record in 2012, a hodgepodge of songs served up on either the guitar or keyboard, which Byrd tackles with equal authority and ease. Byrd brings that Denton summer tradition, Twilight Tunes, to a close on Independence Day. Every other show in the concert series on the Courthouse on the Square lawn starts a bit before sunset on Thursdays. (Tonight’s set by Bone Doggie & the Hickory Street Hellraisers will begin at 6:30 p.m.) On Friday morning, Byrd will bring down the figurative curtain on the concert series after the Yankee Doodle Parade wraps up at about 10 a.m. Byrd’s easy-listening tendencies make his live set suitable for tots and grandparents, and yet he doesn’t soft-pedal the rock attitude of “Day in May” or “Robot Monkey.” And try as he might (though he probably doesn’t), Byrd can’t shed the funk and jazz he refined in the jazz studies program at the University of North Texas. The concert is set to last until 11:30 a.m., and is within walking distance of the Denton Fourth of July Jubilee in Quakertown Park and Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St. The concert and holiday festivities are free. — Lucinda Breeding

Local rocker takes on acting in ‘Holly’ story

rian Lambert didn’t have to work too hard on the music in Denton Community Theatre’s Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story. “Buddy Holly is in my wheelhouse,” the Denton indie rocker said over tacos. “I’ve been doing the rock ’n’ roll thing for a while now. In my earlier days, I was a punk rock guy, so hey, strumming those chords, playing that rhythm guitar really fast, that was what I did. And if you listen to Buddy Holly, there is a hint of that going on.” Now the acting? Lambert, the frontman of Denton band My Kickdrum Heart, said acting didn’t come as easily as assuming the music of an American rock ’n’ roll icon. “Yeah, I’m still working on that,” Lambert said. Directed by Aileen Stark and Bonnie McCormick, Buddy is the company’s annual Encore show. Encore is typically a nofrills ensemble show leaning on beloved Broadway music, staged as a gala fundraiser. Buddy is more of a full production. Lambert was tapped for the role by company volunteer Polly Maynard, a Denton classical and indie musician. “My daughters go to Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, and Herb Newton [a Denton Community Theatre volunteer] told me about the show,” Lambert said. “He said they’d been talking about doing the show, and Polly said, ‘I just so happen to know a rock ’n’ roll guitarist who can sing this.’” Lambert accepted the invitation, and joined a cast from the local theater scene and Denton’s music scene. Bassist Drew Phelps plays a member of Holly’s band, the Crickets, with Trent Reeves and Dave Randolph. Theater veteran Johnny Williams plays Hipockets Duncan, and actors Bryan Patrick and Jaime Nunez Rodriguez play the roles of the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, Holly’s contemporaries. Lambert said he’s been a fan

He appreciates the musician anew. “He was a boy from Lubbock who married a Puerto Rican woman back when things were still pretty segregated [racially],” Lambert said. “He was so prolific,

too. He wrote a lot of music. I’m a lot like him in that I’ve never been able to write the same music, the same style or about the same ideas. I can relate to this guy. ‘Peggy Sue’ didn’t sound like ‘Everyday.’ And ‘Everyday’ didn’t sound like ‘Raining in My Heart.’” Buddy keeps Lambert on

stage through the entire show. Out of 18 numbers, Lambert leads 15. He said he had to get used to putting down the guitar on the few songs he doesn’t accompany himself. “I’m working on delivery,” he said. “And it’s kind of funny, too. Someone told me I did a good

job of Buddy’s gawky dancing. I didn’t try to do any gawky dancing, but I guess being a tall skinny guy kind of helped out that way.” Lambert said he’s felt lucky to share the stage with Phelps, a well-known upright bassist, and that he plans to work with Randolph, whom he met when rehearsals began. He praised the directorial team and the established actors who play Holly’s fellow rock icons. “I’m up there with horn players and backup singers, male and female, and that’s pretty cool. All those folks are pros,” he said. “I’m up there having a blast, pretty much.” Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets cost $20 each. To purchase tickets, visit http:// bit.ly/1v7sy7k or call 940-3821915. For more information, visit www.dentoncommunitytheatre. com. The company presents the musical with sponsor Kwik Kar Lube and Auto Centers of Denton.

Don’t get them started Forgettable songs, weak story doom ‘Begin Again’ By Boo Allen Film Critic booa@att.net

Much of Begin Again looks familiar. And it should. The new musical is the creation of writer-director John Carney, previously responsible for 2006’s similar, curiously overpraised Once. Like its predecessor, Begin Again is not a musical comedy because the laughs are few. Unlike the semi-romantic Once, Carney’s new creation is more anti-romance that romantic. It’s just a pop musical draped lightly around an even lighter narrative. Once centered on Dublin street performers. Begin Again takes place in Manhattan and concerns itself with housebroken performers who, at some point, also decide to take it outside. Again, one person is native and one an outsider. With his two main characters, Carney supplies some thinly drawn characterizations to flesh out the spots in between his songs. An over-energetic, but fun to watch, Mark Ruffalo plays Dan, a dysfunctional music executive strung so high, it’s hard to believe he can work. The night he is fired, he meets Gretta (Keira Knightley) when she sings in a club, a meeting Carney likes so much he shows it three times. From there, it’s all about the music, man. Dan is determined to show his ex-boss (Yasiin Bey,

Gretta (Keira Knightley), a singer-songwriter, deals with her boyfriend, Dave (Maroon 5’s Adam Levine), finding growing fame in “Begin Again.” formerly known as Mos Def) that he can still spot talent. So Dan aspires to produce an album by Greta, even if he has to call in favors, use nonprofessional musicians, and record the sessions guerrilla-style on New York streets. During all this, Greta frets about her philandering ex-boyfriend, Dave (Adam Levine),

while Dan tries to become more of a father to his precocious teen daughter Violet (Hailee Steinfeld) and stay friends with his ex-wife, Miriam (Catherine Keener). In the one memorable sequence, Greta and Dan make a Woody Allen-esque journey through Manhattan while listening to classics on their head-

sets. Except for these out-ofplace nuggets, one forgettable song follows another.

MOVIES Continued from Page 6 minutes. — The Hollywood Reporter Earth to Echo ( ) Earth to Echo would love to be the E.T. the ExtraTerrestrial for the 21st century. But the new movie is to E.T. what Reese’s Pieces is to lumps of sugar. They share an ingredient, but one is far more satisfying. The lack of interesting characters and a patchwork plot leave Earth to Echo more of a Cloverfield for kids. Alex (Teo Halm), Tuck (Astro) and Munch (Reese Hartwig) are three best friends being forced apart by a freeway being built through their neighborhood. They spend their last night together following some weird electronic signals that show up mysteriously on their cellphones. Their quest becomes a close encounter when they find a tiny robotic figure in the desert. Through what seems like an endless series of questions — and with the help of Emma (Ella Wahlestedt) — the group figure out the alien they have named Echo is trying to put together the ignition key for his spacecraft. Rated PG, 100 minutes. — The Fresno Bee Tammy ( ) When Tammy (Melissa McCarthy) loses her husband and job, she heads out on the road with her oversexed, drug-taking, alcoholic grandmother (Susan Sarandon). A succession of formulaic road-trip sequences follows. McCarthy fans will be pleased even if the script, written by her and her directorhusband Ben Falcone, relies almost solely on her personality and unique delivery for laughs. With Kathy Bates, Sandra Oh and Gary Cole. Rated R, 96 minutes. — Boo Allen Third Person ( ) Writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash) again mixes up his story lines, this time flipping among Rome, Paris and New York to tell the stories of three couples facing various difficulties. The situations overflow with angst and pretentious dialogue, ending up looking contrived and, in one case, silly. The couples are played by Liam Neeson and Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody and Moran Atias, James Franco, Loan Chabanol and, by extension, Mila Kunis. Rated R, 137 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — B.A. Snowpiercer ( 1⁄2) Wild, nonstop craziness from Korean visionary Joon-ho Bong (The Host). Set 17 years after an icy apocalypse has engulfed the Earth, the only survivors live on a train constantly circling the globe. But those at the back of train rebel, heading to the front, car by car. Violent, creative and with an excellent, albeit often unrecognizable, cast: Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer and Ed Harris. Rated R, 126 minutes. At regional theaters. — B.A.

show is a benefit for the Denton Kiwanis Club Children’s Clinic. The children’s clinic is a referral service relying on a network of local physicians and health care providers who partner with the Kiwanis clubs to provide low-cost care for children of low-income families. The clinic is funded by grants from the Flow Health Care Foundation, Texas Motor Speedway Children’s Charities and other philanthropic organizations, by proceeds from the club’s various fundraising projects, by the members themselves through the Patron’s Fund, and by donations from the community. Those who watch from outside the stadium can be on the lookout for the Kiwanis “Bucket Brigade,” a team of volunteers who collect cash and check donations for the clinic. Kiwanis officials said concessions will be for sale in the stadium, and no coolers will be allowed.
