guess you could say I’m an overachiever. I owe a debt of gratitude to pimps and preachers.” These lyrics by Paul Thorn represent two men who influenced his life in different ways. “One drug me through the darkness, one led me to the light,” the song says. Thorn will be playing this and other songs from his upcoming album Pimps and Preachers, as well as some of his older songs, at Dan’s Silverleaf tonight. Thorn’s style is a mix between blues and country, and he said that while some might mistake the title of his

Paul Thorn takes a look back at his life in song

He said the songs on his album, slated for release June 22, represent how he looks at life based on his upbringing. Thorn’s songs tell stories about life, from finding an “800 Pound Jesus” at a garage sale to putting a relationship behind him in “If I Can Get Over Her.” “I like a little song with a story in it,” Thorn said. He credits that style to the artists who taught him about music. “I’m not a country artist per se, but people who taught me about songwriting are country artists,” he said. Thorn was a professional

boxer for eight years before he tried making a career out of music. His best-known fight was with Roberto Duran, a fourtime world champion. Thorn said it “taught me how to face my fears.” Although he might not be a household name, he feels blessed to still be surviving and thriving in the world of music that he says is being taken over by American Idol and formulaic artists. “Doesn’t blow up overnight — the world I live in — it just continually grows,” Thorn said.

Wind down with tunes on Square Folksy Mr. Link and Friends perform downtown tonight Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and the family to the downtown Denton Square tonight for the second week of Twilight Tunes, featuring Mr. Link and Friends. Their folksy,

pop-infused music makes for a mellow prelude to the weekend. The Denton Main Street Association hosts the free concerts on the Square from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each Thursday through July 1. Visitors can get a meal to go from one of the many downtown eateries, and children can enjoy activities — hula hoops, a bounce house

and more — while the band plays. (Mom and Dad should make a note, though, because Link Chalon has invited the kid-friendly Miss Polly and Her Tiny Big Band to join him.) The 2010 series features an eclectic assortment of music for all listeners. Up next Thursday: The Allmost Brothers, an Allman Brothers tribute band.

UNT shows students’ short films The close of the semester means documentary fans have a chance to see short films by students of the University of North Texas’ Master of Fine Arts Documentary Film Program. Documentary film students have had a chance to work with Oscar-nominated writer Guillermo Arriaga, an artist-in-residence at the UNT Institute for the Advancement of the Arts. They developed their own short films and worked on production teams with their classmates. Five works will be screened: Beyond the Notes, Ivana Corsale, filmmaker. Three passionate, aspiring musicians face struggles as they pursue their careers. Chasing the Green, Mingun Zhang, filmmaker. Diane and Beverly live a rewarding life raising cattle on their 2,000-acre ranch near Aledo. A New Kind of Tyranny, Rodney Gray, filmmaker. The filmmaker investigates a Texas property owners association involved in racism, tyranny, harassment and other practices. We Are Still There, Liz Colunga, filmmaker. The filmmaker, a military veteran, explores the impact of the Iraq war on the lives of three North Texans: a mother, a soldier and an activist. One Thing We Did Right, Fritz Dent, filmmaker. Thirtyfive years after the fall of Saigon, a Vietnamese family reunites with “Grandfather” Frank Dent, who sponsored their resettlement in the U.S.

Jay “Cafejay” Melugin, left, and Gregory Lange, above, will perform at the North Texas Songwriters Festival on Sunday in Pilot Point.

Artists to share songs in Pilot Point The second North Texas Songwriters Festival will bring more than 30 songwriters to perform original country, rock, alternative and folk music Sunday at the Pilot Point Opera House. The free event is presented by WPNT-FM (91.9) and the Pilot Point Opera House. It was founded by Jay Melugin, who owns Jay’s Cafe and hosts a weekday radio show. “This is a showcase for artists, big and small, to get their music out there and to meet each other,” says Ryan Hawkins, who is helping organize the event. Barbecue, grilled pizza from Da Federico Italian Restaurant and drinks, including a cash bar, will be for sale at the event.

Organizers will also be selling CDs — including a sampler of 19 festival artists — and Tshirts. Proceeds will benefit the Pilot Point Community Opera House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the 1894 opera house and to provide a venue for indie musicians, actors and artists of various disciplines to share their work in Pilot Point. OPENING FRIDAY

Harry Brown (##1/2) Michael Caine plays Harry Brown, an Irish war veteran living in London’s notorious “estates” (housing projects) who loses his wife and then has his best mate murdered by a local gang. So Harry takes revenge, turning the second half of the film into a violent, brainless bloodbath. Before the thoughtful early part of the film gives way to excess, Caine is touching as the grieving, lost pensioner. Rated R, 103 minutes. At the Magnolia and Angelika Plano. — Boo Allen Just Wright (##) Predictable romantic comedy squanders the charm of Queen Latifah, playing a physical therapist and die-hard basketball fan who befriends an NBA superstar (Common) after a chance encounter, only to watch her sexy gold-digging roommate (Paula Patton) ruin any shot at romance. But when he suffers a severe knee injury, the situation changes. There aren’t many surprises from there in a film that requires a massive suspension of disbelief, although NBA fans might enjoy cameos from Dwyane Wade and Dwight Howard. Rated PG, 99 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson North Face (### 1/2) Riveting true-life tale of a group of mountain climbers who set aside political differences to conquer a dangerous peak in 1936 Germany against the backdrop of the Nazi rise to power. The film is at its best when focusing on the perils of man against mountain, with many of the shots apparently filmed on location by director Philipp Stolzl and his crew. Too often the screenplay gets sidetracked, particularly with a throwaway romantic subplot, but the film is ambitious and taut enough to overcome such flaws. Not rated, 121 minutes. At the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. — T.J. Robin Hood (##) Dark and violent big-screen retelling of the 12th-century legend stars Russell Crowe in the title role as the outlaw who is ostracized by the British government he helped to save, then becomes an ally of the oppressed. This big-budget version tries to tell more of the back story through a repetitive series of elaborate battle sequences. Yet Crowe and director Ridley Scott don’t replicate their Oscar-winning Gladiator success. It’s handsomely mounted, but the script lacks charac-

old letter from Claire, a young Englishwoman asking for guidance about her Italian boyfriend. Expecting nothing, Sophie answers the letter. Before long, the now older Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) shows up in Verona with her priggish grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan). Together, the three repeatedly and repetitively hunt throughout Tuscany for the long-lost Lorenzo (Franco Nero). The constant detours allow the story to wander through breathtaking landscapes. In the interim, Victor meanders around Italy on his own mission, while Sophie and Charlie argue. But, since this is Romeo and Juliet territory, the audience well knows that “from forth the fatal

loins of these two foes” come “a pair of star-cross’d lovers.” At this point, the question of whether Claire will find Lorenzo, or who will end up with whom, no longer remains in doubt to anyone steeped in the rigid rules of formulaic romance. Winik never works up a sweat to at least make it look like love might not blossom in both couples. As the two dreamy-eyed young lovers, Seyfried and Egan look primed to step into Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant’s shoes, or — who knows? — Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero’s.

Letters to Juliet

Endless vistas of the lush Italian countryside, some playful banter and a likable cast make Letters to Juliet worthwhile, even if you feel like you’ve seen it before. Several times before. Gary Winik directs, from Jose Rivera and Tim Sullivan’s transparent script, and Winik does little more than follow the path laid out for him for a predictable, sappy romance — the kind that will appeal to adults headed to the multiplex for something besides Robin Hood and Iron Man 2. Every sequence in Juliet unfolds as expected, giving the film its secure, cozy, warm-blanket feel. The premise: Sophie (Aman-

da Seyfried, already starring in her third film this year, after Dear John and Chloe) and Victor (the ever-jittery Gael Garcia Bernal) travel to Verona, Italy, so he can meet with various suppliers for his new restaurant. While still in town, she joins a group of women, the Secretaries of Juliet, who daily answer letters left by tourists asking advice from Romeo’s Juliet. Sophie uncovers a 53-year-

MEN OF DISHONOR All’s fair in love and war — especially when money’s on the line — in Music Theatre of Denton’s ‘Scoundrels’ By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

he con is on at the Campus Theatre. Music Theatre of Denton sinks its teeth into the musical comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, an adaptation of the 1988 film starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine. “What originally interested me in the show was the Frank Oz film,” said co-director Bill Kirkley. “I think it’s just a very, very entertaining film — and it’s also because of my deep-seated love of the con man. You really are rooting for the bad guys.”

The bad guys are swindlers Lawrence Jameson and a rookie named Freddy. The two meet in the French Riviera, where Jameson dotes on women to win their financial favor. Freddy is rough around the edges, and pretends to be a prince who talks women out of their jewelry, claiming to need it for the revolution he’s

started in his obscure homeland. The men become rivals when they learn that Christine Colgate is on her way to the hotel where they’ve set up shop. She’s called a “soap queen,” and the con men bet one another that they can

cheat $50,000 from the socialite. The loser has to leave the Riviera. The cast is fleshed out by Kenny Fudge, who plays Andre, the police captain who is in on the con men’s scam. Mandy Hilliard Rausch returns to the stage as Muriel, a woman who pledges to help Freddy fight his revolution. Kelsey Macke is Christine, the

sweet American “soap queen.” David Yazbek wrote the music and lyrics and Jeffrey Lane wrote the book. The duo crafted a musical that makes the two men the center of the story, upsetting the traditional boy-meets-girl storyline in favor of a contest between the well-heeled, charming Lawrence and the rougharound-the-edges Freddy. Kirkley, who split his directing duties with his wife, Vicki, gave his leading roles to two

favorites of Music Theatre of Denton. Tyler Donahue plays Lawrence and Justin Harmon plays Freddy. Both actors said they have a soft spot for the reprobates they play. “He’s fun,” Harmon said. “He’s kind of your everyday guy who happens to be a con man. He’s just more blatant with what he’s up to than you’d expect. I saw this show a

while back, and saw Norbert [Leo Butz, Wicked] played the role. Freddy just makes it fun. He and Lawrence have the same goal. They just go about getting there differently.” Donahue said he couldn’t help but like Lawrence, either. “He’s a bad guy in the sense that he swindles people; however, what it is that he’s doing is giving people what they

need in return for what he takes from them. He’s paying people for making their lives more exciting. He’s not just a regular scoundrel. He’s got class,” Donahue said. “I think you know Freddy and Lawrence are the perfect couple,” Kirkley said. “Lawrence has the strengths that Freddy needs to acquire and Freddy has a love of life that Lawrence has kind of stalled on.” Harmon and Donahue said playing a villain has been a lot of fun. “My villains are eccentric,

like Koko in Hot Mikado,” Harmon said. “I play eccentric characters a lot. This is the third show in a row that I’ve played more than one character, too.” Harmon played multiple roles in Crazy For You, and in A Tuna Christmas. Scoundrels doesn’t require Harmon play different people, but Freddy pretends to be several people his victims will feel obligated to help. “Absolutely, it’s a lot of fun,” Donahue said. “It really is the best. The challenge is taking people who do such objection-

able things and trying to get the audience to side with you.” Harmon and Tyler have worked on five shows together, but Scoundrels is their first show to team up as leading men. Donahue said he originally auditioned for the role of Andre, thinking it was more to his type.

“I gladly, gladly accepted when they offered me the role of Lawrence,” he said. The role requires him to speak with British, Austrian and Spanish accents. “Tyler and I challenge one another,” Harmon said. “He and I are really different in how we approach the show,

and how we approached the music. I think he’s really a wonderful singer, but I have to say he’s really developing his acting skills. I think he’s done a great job with this show.” Donahue said he’s enjoyed working with Harmon as a lead in the show. “We haven’t worked this

closely before, no. We noticed that as we were doing this show. He really is one of my absolute best friends in the world. He’s such a wonderful actor,” he said. Bill Kirkley calls the show “a bit of meta-theater.” “It is aware of itself and pokes fun at itself. The show is done in a way that we know this is theater and we know these are actors,” he said. The musical numbers — including everything from salsa to country to a classic musical theater moonlight dance number — draw the audience’s attention to the show as a work of theater. The Kirkleys played off of that, handling the chorus in unexpected ways and giving the gimmicks as much volume as they could. “This is light, entertaining stuff to start the summer,” Bill Kirkley said. The musical direction is by John Norrine, and the choreography is by Lisa Racina. LUCINDA BREEDING can be reached at 940-566-6877.
