‘Blessed’ be the upcoming faculty dance recital

T

he music for Bebe Miller’s “Blessed” is unabashed, a cappella gospel, with praise to God belted out toward the heavens. But dance professor Sarah Gamblin said the moves fired up by the music are spiritual food for Everyman. The piece for eight dancers is one of four works in “Closer to the Earth and Sky,” the faculty dance concert opening at 8 p.m. today and running this weekend at the University of North Texas. “The music is beautiful,” said Gamblin, an associate professor of dance at Texas Woman’s University and an alumna of the Bebe Miller Company. “It makes you want to sing. It makes you want to move.” Miller, an Ohio-based dancer, choreographer and dance evangelist, set the piece to songs

by the Cafe of the Gate of Salvation, an Australian a cappella gospel choir. For Miller, the chorus was a soundtrack to put bodies in flight. For Gamblin, the music is but an ingredient of the piece that asks dancers and audience to let go of restriction and restraint — both spiritual and physical — and reach for the stratosphere. UNT lecturer Ellie Leonhardt invited Gamblin to teach UNT dancers “Blessed.” Gamblin danced the piece herself with Miller’s company, where she was a member from 1993 to 2000. Miller visited Denton for two days to join Gamblin in setting the dance on the students, rebuilding the dance from two videos. “The movement flows from the chest, and the arms, moving from the heart — not just the chest, necessarily, but from

the heart. Bebe choreographs dance by asking where the dance comes from, and in this piece, it’s the heart — to above. That’s what the whole concert is trying to do, explore the connection we have to the ground to what’s above,” Gamblin said. Miller’s choreography is informed by contact improvisation, a dance form that demands each performer connect with another’s body — be it hand to hand, torso to leg or hand to foot — and follow where the body wants to go. It’s a playful form of choreography and lends itself to visual fireworks, with dancers colliding or propelling one another. Gamblin said Miller’s piece affects a universal appeal. “It is gospel music, but this isn’t a religious piece at all. It is spiritual, though. At least I think so,” she said. “There’s a lot

of warmth and care. Its lush and sensuous.” The concert also features: the premiere of “The Eclipse Project Part 2” by UNT professor Mary Lyn Babcock; “Not Withstanding” Part 1 and the premiere of Part 2 by Leonhardt; and “Choking the Earth? Just Take Off Those Clothes and Join the Water, in D-Flat” a revision of the 2009 premiere by UNT professor Shelley Cushman. Performances are 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the University Theatre in the Radio, Television, Film and Performing Arts Building, located at the corner of Welch and Chestnut streets. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7.50 for students, UNT faculty/staff and seniors. Call 940-565-2428.

n Saturday morning, Woods of Mission Timber is hosting a free outdoor event for fiber enthusiasts, weavers, hand-spinners and quilters: “The Art of Dyeing with Natural Materials.” Guests Laura and John Easterling will demonstrate how to use sawdust from such woods as

mesquite, bois d’arc, logwood and Brazilwood and other plant material to create natural dyes for wool yarn and cotton fabric. “We go back in time before chemical-reactive fiber dyes,” said Laura Easterling, who will also bring her spinning wheel to the event. “Dyeing with natural dyes is not an exact science,” she said, and the demonstration will “give a window into the ancient techniques of dyeing.”

The Easterlings serve on the board of the Mountain and Valley Wool Association, which sponsors the Taos Wool Festival in New Mexico during the first weekend in October. They also own Laura’s Locksmith & Security Store in Denton. The demonstration will start at 10 a.m. at Woods of Mission Timber, 4203 W. FM455 in Sanger. For more information, call 940-458-4750.

OPENING FRIDAY Ajami (###1/2) This Oscar nominee for best foreign language picture, from Israel, examines the circle, and the endless cycle, of violence among five interconnected groups and families living in a mixed IsraeliPalestinian neighborhood in Tel Aviv. It shows how small events bring about unintended consequences, often on the innocent. Well-made film with a gripping, intense story. Not rated, 120 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Boo Allen Girl on the Train (###1/2) Muddled but consistently compelling drama from veteran French director Andre Techine about a Parisian girl (Emilie Dequenne) from a middle-class background whose lie about an incident on the subway has unintended repercussions for her mother (Catherine Deneuve) and lawyer (Michel Blanc). The film raises provocative issues about life in contemporary Paris and refuses to take a stand, to sometimes frustrating effect. But Techine's characters are vivid and his story complex enough to keep viewers hooked throughout. Not rated, 105 minutes. At the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. — Todd Jorgenson La Mission (##) Benjamin Bratt stars as Los Angeleno Che Rivera in this film written and directed by his brother Peter Bratt. Che is a macho bus driver who works on cars and hangs out with his neighborhood friends. He becomes irate and combative when he discovers his high school student son Jesse (Jeremy Ray Valdez) is gay. But nothing especially revelatory comes of the discovery in this film that seems dated. Rated R, 117 minutes. At the Magnolia. — B.A. A Nightmare on Elm Street Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley) is back to terrorize people in their dreams in an update of the 1980s slasher franchise. Rated R, 95 minutes. — The Associated Press Paper Man (##) Ill-conceived and slightly creepy comedy about a troubled Long Island writer (Jeff Daniels) who strikes up a friendship with a lonely teenager (Emma Stone) who he suspects might be the key to exorcising his inner demons, including an imaginary hero named Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds). The film works best as a character study of a man suffering from arrested adolescence, depression, writer’s block, and

‘Vengeance’ served cold Nobody spared in terrible, slapstick film — least of all the poor audience By Boo Allen Film Critic

Furry Vengeance shows what happens when a good idea goes tragically wrong. Oh, the horror. Here’s the basic premise behind this adolescent mess that should appeal only to anyone 3 or younger (adults might prefer a colonoscopy instead): Neal Lyman (Ken Jeong), a mean real estate developer, sends his bumbling corporate flunky Dan Sanders (Brendan Fraser) to a forest that will be destroyed to construct hideous new McMansions. everything in between. The cast is fine, but the script too often resorts to forced quirks and feel-good contrivances. Rated R, 110 minutes. At the Magnolia. — T.J.

NOW PLAYING Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll adventures of a girl who goes through the looking glass. With Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena BonhamCarter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Rated PG, 109

Furry Vengeance

Dan’s wife, Tammy (Brooke Shields), objects to the relocation, as does their teenage son Tyler (Matt Prokop). But the animals of the forest unite, fighting against the invasion with cutesy clever tricks. Now, what’s not to like? Furry animals wreaking revenge on crass, dumb humans would seem irresistible, but director Roger Kumble shows the touch of Sweeney Todd as he unleashes the forces of silly slapstick on a bumbling cast that seems to have no direction at all. The director clumsily sends

his cast through a series of standard contrivances, from Michael Carnes and Josh Gilbert’s embarrassing script, with no sense of where the humor should come in. Kumble, who really should think about taking some time off, even repeats the unforgivable sin of showing the same gag twice, such as when a distracted Dan runs his car into a

minutes. — AP The Back-Up Plan (##) Assemblyline romantic comedy stars Jennifer Lopez as a pet-store owner who has trouble finding Mr. Right, so she tries artificial insemination, only to meet her perfect man (Alex O’Loughlin) on the very same day. After she has trouble telling him the secret, it threatens to them apart. However, like just about everything that precedes it, the ending is pretty easy to guess. Lopez and O’Loughlin generate some moderate chemistry, but the eccentric supporting cast has many of the best lines in this contrived cute-fest. Rated PG-13, 104

minutes. — T.J. The Bounty Hunter (##) Formulaic romantic comedy about an ex-policeman-turned-bounty hunter (Gerard Butler) who must find and bring back his journalist ex-wife (Jennifer Aniston). But she’s on the trail of finding a possible murderer. Filled with aimless chases and pursuits, while the spare laughs are broad and forced. And the two leads seem chemistry-less. Routine fare. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — B.A. Clash of the Titans Ancient Greek hero Perseus (Sam Worthington) takes on Hades, lord of the underworld. With Liam Neeson and Ralph

Rated PG, 92 minutes. Opens Friday.

pile of PVC pipe. Great idea: Beat your audience with the bad gags until they laugh. At that point you can cue the 3-year-olds. Poor Brendan Fraser is left to giggle incessantly and be pummeled with water, poop and various other humiliations, while an even poorer Brooke Shields can only watch and roll her eyes. Overall, the gags are infantile, the cinematography bland, the special effects elementary, and the editing looks like it was done by Edward Scissorhands. In fact, Furry Vengeance looks like it was directed by a dead man. DR. BOO ALLEN is an award-winning film critic for the Denton Record-Chronicle. Fiennes. Directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk). Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — AP Date Night (###) Steve Carell (The Office) and Tina Fey (30 Rock) play two New Jersey suburbanites who are mistaken for two other malefactors and are then chased through Manhattan by two killer cops. Director Shawn Levy (the Night at the Museum movies) keeps the action speeding along while his featured duo crack wise, have numerous adventures, and discover the hidden joys of marriage. Rated PG-13, 88

Music and dance will be part of Denton’s annual Cinco de Mayo celebration, now in its 23rd year.

enton’s Cinco de Mayo celebration, now in its 23rd year, is a community effort. “This event is coordinated and organized by the volunteers,” said Janie McLeod, community events coordinator with the city of Denton. “They deserve the credit.” This year’s event is Saturday at Quakertown Park. It’s organized by volunteers and presented by organizations including the Greater Denton Arts Council, The Arts Guild of Denton, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, and funded in part by the city. “Of course, we are always looking for more people to take on leadership roles,” McLeod said. Because last year’s event was canceled due to swine flu fears, McLeod

said this weekend’s festivities are highly anticipated. The celebration kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m. beginning at Texas Woman’s University and ending at the Denton Civic Center parking lot. At 11 a.m., a City Council representative will read the Cinco de Mayo proclamation and open the festivities, which will feature two stages with live entertainment, food vendors, an arts and crafts area for children, and the La Reina Pageant, a scholarship contest for young Latinas. Champions League Athletics will host two soccer tournaments for area amateur clubs — an adult coed tournament for those 16 and older, and a ’ tournament for youths ages 7-12. “This is the first year we have a women’s team,” McLeod said. A dance will follow from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Civic Center. Tickets cost $15 per person, or $25 per couple.

Anticipation runs high for Denton’s Cinco de Mayo after last year’s cancellation

CINCO DE MAYO When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday Where: Festivities are at Quakertown Park, 321 E. McKinney St. Parade at 10 a.m. goes from Texas Woman’s University to the Denton Civic Center parking lot. Details: Admission is free. On the Web: www.dentoncinco.org DANCE A dance will follow from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday at the Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St. Tickets cost $15 per person, or $25 per couple.

Monica Hughes, who has served as event chairwoman for the past three years, said everyone is excited about the festival, which gets bigger every year. “It is such a tradition,” she said. “It is more of a personal event, since we

are a smaller community and it is not a commercial event.” Officials are hoping to attract about 15,000 people from Denton and surrounding communities. Cinco de Mayo (May 5) commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when 4,500 Mexican soldiers faced 6,000 well-trained French soldiers under Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza. The infamous battle was known to have lasted only four hours. Cinco de Mayo is a regional holiday celebrated in Puebla, Mexico, as well as in cities throughout the United States with large Mexican populations. The holiday is often confused with Mexico’s Independence Day, Sept. 16, a day before the beginning of the national Hispanic Heritage Month. KARINA RAMÍREZ can be reached at 940-566-6878. There are lessons to be learned about peace and tolerance, but youngsters will most appreciate the colorful dragons and the flying sequences that stand out in the 3-D format. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — T.J. Kick-Ass (###1/2) Mark Millar’s comic book series comes to life at the hands of writer-director Matthew Vaughn, who shows a sense of whimsy and a continuous ability to surprise.
