hen the redbud blossoms bloom, North Texans know that April has arrived. What better way to celebrate than by going to the 17th annual Redbud Festival on Saturday at the Denton Civic Center? Keep Denton Beautiful’s free festival, which is the city’s official Arbor Day celebration, includes a home and garden show with all things outdoorsy for sale. Now’s the time to purchase

trees and plants for your yard, stock up on gardening and landscaping supplies, and pick up some home improvement products — and, at the same time, take advantage of the many vendors who will be selling outdoor pottery, birdhouses, sunrooms, wind chimes and yard art. Redbud trees will be available for purchase on a firstcome, first-served basis. Two free classes on xeriscaping — landscaping with water-

efficient plants — will be taught by landscape designer Bonnie Reese. “Landscape Design” will be offered from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and “Picking the Right Plants” will follow from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. To register, call the Denton water utilities office at 940-349-8172. Blooming irises draw visitors to Argyle Acres Come see “Iris in Bloom” at Argyle Acres display garden, from noon to 5 p.m. daily beginning this Saturday through April 25, at 910 Pioneer Circle East in Argyle. For 17 years, Joe and Donna Spears have hosted this free garden tour at their log cabin home. According to the Spearses, the irises are blooming late this year, and they expect to have the most blooms between April 15 and 25. Bring a camera, wear comfortable shoes and take a leisurely stroll through more than 1,000 carefully labeled iris varieties, about a third of which are “historic” — that is, more than 30 years old. In addition to the colorful flower beds, freshly cut bouquets will also be on display (but not for sale) near the house. Visitors can choose to order bulbs for shipping and planting in late summer or early fall. Argyle Acres offers more than 560 varieties, and orders will be accepted through July 31. Parking is available on the street. However, a golf cart ride is offered to those who need

Hannah Lane stars as Cinderella in Denton Community Theatre’s staging of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, opening Friday. Keith Warren plays the prince.

All that and a glass slipper Parents yearning for the next G-rated release from Pixar can find a little sugar and spice in Denton starting this weekend, thanks to Denton Community Theatre’s Cinderella. It’s not the Disney version, but the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical means to capture all the magic and wonder of the story of a neglected stepdaughter who gets a Fairy Godmother and, eventually, a Prince Charming of her own. Sharon Veselic (Carousel, The Sound of Music) returns to the Campus Theatre to direct the musical about a orphaned girl only grudgingly given to the care of a mean-spirited stepmother

and her devious daughters. The happy ending is well known. Cinderella stars Hannah Lane in the title role, and her mother, Connie Lane, plays the ugly stepmother. Keith Warren is the prince. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, April 16-17 and April 23-24; and 2 p.m. this Sunday, April 15 and April 18. Performances are at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors 62 and older, and $10 for children and students. For reservations, visit www.campus theatre.com or call 940382-1915. — Lucinda Breeding

Hard-working artists Late-night Modern event taps Denton’s Seryn, Monastery By Lucinda Breeding Features Editor

T

he Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth decided that a little slice of Denton was just what Andy Warhol ordered. The venerable Southwestern museum has long kept its doors open every once in a while for The Modern ’til Midnight, when the staff opens the museum and cafe doors for an afterhours culture buffet. Saturday night, Denton’s one-man music minimalist Monastery (a.k.a. Jarrett Lyday) and rising star Seryn share a spot just next to the outdoor museum reflecting pool. Inside the museum, “Andy Warhol: The Last Decade” will be on exhibit, as will “Focus: Ben Jones.” For the members of Seryn, who are in the midst of rapid ride into the upper echelons of respected indie music, the date is both one night in a band calendar stuffed with gigs and a cool opportunity to take their music to a way station for art known and loved internationally. “I think that’s, like, one of the coolest places like that you can perform in,” said band member Trenton Wheeler. “It’s one of those places where you can set up and play to a different crowd. It takes a lot of effort to get people to come out to

shows. It’s hard to get people to come out and pay $10 to see a bunch of local bands. If you get people in a place like that, they get a little more bang for their buck.” A lot of bands take pride in being hard to pigeonhole, stylistically. But Seryn is truly tough to categorize. Are they folk? Do they deal indie rock reframed through banjo, fiddle, guitar and bass, drums and keyboards? Wait — is that a touch of Irish traditional music in the track “So, Within?” The answer to all those queries is yes, no and all of the above. Whatever the band considers to be its sound brand, it feels fresh. The band just played some off-festival shows in Austin during South by Southwest, a massive spring break music and film festival for industry representatives. The band’s set at the North by 35 Music Conferette in Denton was standing room only. “That Sweetwater [Grill & Tavern] gig was awesome, and I hope it will be the best gig we ever have at Sweetwater, because it’s not really a venue, you know?” said band member Nathan Allen. Seryn was recently picked up by Spune, a Dallas-Fort Worth shop that combines artist development, promotion, performance and recording. The group is three tracks shy of completing its debut album, slated for release at the end of the summer. Allen and Wheeler said the group came together and matured musically through basic hard work.

MODERN ’TIL MIDNIGHT Saturday’s schedule 7 p.m. — Monastery 7:50 p.m. — Ben Jones as Dr. Doo performing Black Math 8 p.m. — Screening of I Shot Andy Warhol 8:50 p.m. — The Orbans 9:50 p.m. — Seryn 10:50 p.m. — Warpaint

One thing that brought the band from formation to recording contract in a year was “a pretty strong desire within all of us to be doing this,” Wheeler said. “Yeah, I think it also has to do with rehearsal,” Allen said. “A lot of bands will spend Thursday nights for a couple of years [in rehearsal]. For us, it’s been Thursdays, Saturdays, and then Tuesdays, and then Mondays. We were doing stuff every time we could.” Wheeler and Allen cited some influences from the Denton music scene: Sarah Jaffe, Doug Burr, RTB2, Sleep Whale and Sunnybrook. In addition to Monastery, Allen said another Denton outfit is planning to make the Modern ’til Midnight event — Pan-Ector Industries, a screenprinting collective, will be on site, pressing original designs and T-shirts. The evening starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 3200 Darnell St. in Fort Worth. Admission is $15, but it’s free for Modern members.

In the midst of the date night from hell, Claire (Tina Fey) and Phil (Steve Carell) make a frantic call for help in Date Night.

Inside Golden Triangle Mall, 2201 S. I-35E. 940-387-1957.

OPENING FRIDAY The Black Waters of Echo’s Pond (#1/2) Low-budget gorefest about nine friends who spend the weekend at a vacation house in the woods, only to uncover an ancient board game (no kidding) that reveals each of their darkest nightmares and true feelings about one another as they play, leading to suspicion, jealousy and murder. It's an idea that might have worked as a short film, but is stretched thin as a feature, where the suspense never really builds and the incoherent script takes itself way too seriously. The acting is wooden and the thrills are few. Rated R, 92 minutes. — Todd Jorgenson Letters to God A look at the galvanizing effect one 8-year-old cancerstricken boy’s faith has on his family, friends and community. Rated PG, 110 minutes. When You’re Strange Narrarated by Johnny Depp, this documentary uncovers historic, previously unseen footage of the Doors and provides new insight into the revolutionary impact of the band’s music and legacy. Rated R, 90 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas.

NOW PLAYING Alice in Wonderland Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll adventures of a girl who goes through the looking glass. With Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena BonhamCarter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Also showing in 3-D. Rated PG, 109 minutes. — The Associated Press Avatar (###1/2) James Cameron’s long-gestating computer-generated science-fiction saga boasts impressive special effects and some striking creatures. A U.S. military team travels to the distant moon Pandora to extract a valuable mineral. But once there, they must disrupt the peaceful indigenous people. The skies and mountains of Pandora set the scene for the ultimate battle sequences and for Cameron’s technical crews to render a succession of detailed, highly impressive marvels. Rated PG-13, 162 minutes. — Boo Allen The Bounty Hunter (##) Formulaic romantic comedy about an ex-policeman-turned-bounty hunter

20th Century Fox

‘Night’ to remember everal times during Date Night, Phil Foster (Steve Carell) turns to his wife Claire (Tina Fey) and notentirely-jokingly asks: “Who are you?” Though inconsistent, this theme of unexplored selfdiscovery runs throughout this madcap new comedy, even while gunshots ring out, cars crash and semi-naked bodies parade across the screen. Date Night unites two comedians best known for their television series. Together, Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Steve Carell (The Office) share a comedian’s

invaluable trait of not being afraid to look bad in a quest for laughs. As much as Date Night might superficially resemble the husband-and-wife domestic actioncomedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith, it’s hard to imagine Angelina Jolie drooling all over herself as she fumbles with her mouth guard while trying to decide whether to have sex with her mildly interested husband — or Brad Pitt repeatedly throwing up from fear on a Manhattan street. New Jersey suburbanites Phil and Claire Foster deeply love each other and their nuclear family, even though their marriage has settled into a familiar routine. On one of their weekly date nights, they splurge and travel into Manhattan to try out a trendy new restaurant, all grist for

humorous material from Josh Klausner’s script. In a case of a mistaken identity, a pair of crooked cops chase the Fosters through the city, intent on killing them because the Fosters are thought to hold an incriminating flash drive. This McGuffin device unleashes director Shawn Levy’s penchant for mixing offhand, absurdist dialogue, slapstick physical humor, and a chaotic pace, much like his two Night at the Museum movies. Levy also works in an elaborate chase, as the Fosters steal a car, break into an office and eventually hide from an unwitting, and unwilling, casual business acquaintance of Claire’s (Mark Wahlberg). With time to think about them, the plot holes would add up, but it is hard to worry about inconsis-

(Gerard Butler) who must find and bring back his journalist ex-wife (Jennifer Aniston). But she’s on the trail of finding a possible murderer. Filled with aimless chases and pursuits, while the spare laughs are broad and forced. And the two leads seem chemistry-less. Routine fare. Rated PG-13, 110 minutes. — B.A.

Clash of the Titans Ancient Greek hero Perseus (Sam Worthington) takes on Hades, lord of the underworld. With Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes. Directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk). Rated PG-13, 118 minutes. — AP Diary of a Wimpy Kid (##1/2) This mildly amusing, strictly-for-kids com-

edy based on Jeff Kinney’s illustrated novel sees wimpy yet wise-cracking Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) struggling through his first days in middle school. Kinney’s stick figures (sometimes) come to life to illustrate Greg’s clueless parents (Rachael Harris and Steve Zahn) and his obnoxious brother. Rated PG, 120

tencies when Fey dresses in a bondage outfit and cavorts around a dance pole while Carell licks the pole. Added up, Fey and Carell, with their self-abasing humor, rapid deliveries and casual improvisations, create the film’s highlights, even as a roster of non-billed stars (Mark Ruffalo, James Franco, Mila Kunis, will.i.am, Kristen Wiig) try to sneak by. The Foster’s odyssey of selfdiscovery gives way to a blatant appeal for laughs by any means necessary. And that’s not always bad for a comedy. DR. enton artists celebrating Denton is the focus of a new multimedia art event, “Artistically Denton: Celebrating Our Place,” Saturday evening at the Center for the Visual Arts. Poetry, film, visual arts and music will be featured in different areas of the arts center. Presentations will begin on the hour and half-hour, and attendees can change venues as they wish. Admission is free. “I look at this event as a chance for multiple Denton artists to share their art in a way that helps Denton citizens to reimagine our place and energize a broad conversation about where we are and what it is,” said organizer David Taylor, an English professor at the University of North Texas.

Photographs such as, clockwise from top, Urban Landscape by Monte Borders, The Mill by Terry Karloff, and Foggy Morning by Brigid Brammer will be among the pieces on display at “Artistically Denton: Celebrating Our Place,” Saturday evening at the Center for the Visual Arts.

“We stand at an interesting time as citizens of our community,” he said. “How do we want to grow? How do we want to preserve our sense of place culturally, artistically and environmentally? How can artists play a role in being a part of that discussion?” These are the questions “Artistically Denton” brings to the forefront. Local organizations and businesses are making it happen. All of the art provided by Oxide Gallery is included in its April show, “Our Environment: Places of Our Lives,” a theme with a heavy emphasis on Denton, chosen to coordinate with the “Artistically Denton” concept. The show’s jurors were Taylor and Alicia M. Brosey, Denton Chamber of Commerce director of membership development and programs. Participating artists are Michael Bales, Monte Borders, Bernard Bortnick, Brigid Brammer, Dan Flake, Terry Karloff, Randall Lantz, Owen Richards, Jane Ruestmann and Jo Williams. Crazy Diamond won the Thin Line Film Festival Audience Choice award earlier this year. “This community is flush with talented filmmakers, and Texas Filmmakers is thrilled to showcase three local films as a part of ‘Artistically Denton,’” said Joshua Butler, president of Texas Filmmakers. Rated PG-13, 128 minutes. — B.A. Hot Tub Time Machine After a night of drinking, a group of best friends (John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke) wakes up, heads pounding, in the year 1986. Rated R, 100 minutes. How to Train Your Dragon (###) The latest computer-generated, 3-D animated adventure is set in the world of Vikings and dragons, where a teenage outcast trains to become a dragon slayer like his demanding father, but instead befriends the most vicious of all dragons, something forbidden in his village. There are lessons to be learned about peace and tolerance, but youngsters will most appreciate the colorful dragons and the flying sequences that stand out in the 3-D format. Meanwhile, adults will find enough breezy humor to pass the time. Rated PG, 97 minutes. — T.J. The Last Song (##) Miley Cyrus

Dianne (Sharon Leal) and Terry (Tyler Perry) go on vacation with three other couples, learning a lot about their relationship in the process, in Why Did I Get Married Too? sheds her Hannah Montana persona as a rebellious teen who leaves her NYC home to spend the summer

“Of course, I’m a proponent of Denton music. The concentration of artistic people and clever minds per capita here is extraordinary, as high as any place else in the United States.” — Dan Mojica, co-owner of Dan’s Silverleaf

its support of the local music scene, will coordinate performances by four local singersongwriters: Emil Rapstine, of Denton-born band the Angelus; Caleb Ian Campbell, guitarist and lead singer of the Polycorns, who is currently recording a solo album; Sam Robertson, who recently relocated from Florida to Denton specifically for the music scene; and Fancy Fist, a.k.a. Sally Glass, a pop-infused folk artist, who was born and raised in Israel and now lives in Dallas. “Of course, I’m a proponent of Denton music. The concentration of artistic people and clever minds per capita here is extraordinary, as high as any place else in the United States,” said Dan Mojica, co-owner of Dan’s Silverleaf, who compares the Denton music scene to that with her father (Greg Kinnear) in a picturesque Southern beach home. The surly teen grows softer when caring for buried turtle eggs and falling for the local boy (Liam Hemsworth). Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, which means plenty of tear-inducing third act melodrama. Rated PG, 108 minutes. — B.A. She’s Out of My League An average guy (Jay Baruchel of Undeclared) scores big when a super-babe inexplicably falls for him. Rated R, 104 minutes. — AP Shutter Island (###1/2) Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a U.S. marshal in 1954 who travels to the mysterious Shutter Island in Boston Harbor to investigate the disappearance of an inmate at a mental hospital, run by a pair of seemingly deceitful doctors (Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow). From Dennis Lehane’s novel, director Martin Scorsese renders an appropriately creepy film filled with oddballs, lurking danger and unsettling twists. With Mark Ruffalo and Patricia Clarkson. Rated R, 138 minutes. — B.A. Why Did I Get Married Too? Filmmaker Tyler Perry co-stars with Janet Jackson, Malik Yoba and other castmates for this relationship sequel. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. — AP

of Austin and Chicago. Matthew Gray, who helps book bands for Dan’s Silverleaf, said, “I was thrilled to be asked to be a part of it. I think it’s a great idea, amazing for Denton. It’s [going to be an] exciting event. It’s great that the city is so involved in the local arts community. We’re working together to promote the arts scene.” The Denton Poets’ Assembly provides the poetry readings. The assembly is an active, growing chapter of the Poetry Society of Texas and the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. The association began five years ago, and members meet at 10 a.m. on the third Sunday of each month at Emily Fowler Central Library to share, read and learn about poetry. The assembly poets partici-
