enri Cole looks the human condition full in the face. The poet, who was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2004, will visit the University of North Texas campus March 4. He’ll read his poetry, which takes an unflinching look at some of our most universal anxieties — loneliness and aging — and one of humankind’s most eternal sources of hope — the tenacity of nature. Cole will have a questionand-answer session at 4 p.m. March 4 in Room 212 of the

UNT Auditorium Building at the intersection of Hickory and Fry streets. He’ll present a reading of his work at 8 p.m. March 4 in the Golden Eagle Suite in the UNT Union, located on Union Circle off of Welch Street. Cole will sign copies of his books after the reading. His most recent collection, Blackbird and Wolf, was published in 2007. Cole comes to UNT through the Department of English Visiting Writers Series. The events are free. — Lucinda Breeding

ast year, about 1,200 volunteers collected 250,000 pounds for Denton’s Great American Cleanup. This year, Keep Denton Beautiful is hoping for even more. About 800 people have already registered for the event that will be held March 6 from 8 a.m. to noon. The Great American Cleanup is a nationwide effort from March 1 to May 31 that encourages people to take some time to clean up their cities. “It is interesting to see what

people find,” said Mendie Schmidt, the Keep Denton Beautiful event and outreach coordinator. Volunteers will be provided gloves, trash bags and recycling bags, plus a free T-shirt. Schmidt said she encourages volunteers to dress appropriately for the weather and to wear closed-toed shoes. Volunteers for Denton’s event are encouraged to register in advance so the organization knows how many gloves and trash bags are needed. It is also helpful in deciding which

location fits the size of the group, Schmidt said. After the cleanup is over, pizza will be served and different activities will be set up at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St., where volunteers will bring their collected trash to be weighed. This helps the organization measure what impact their efforts had, Schmidt said. For more information or to register, call 940-349-8738 or visit www.KDB.org. — Rachel Mehlhaff

Musician Bucks Burnett collects eight-track tapes, and has amassed an impressive collection. He’s bringing some of it to town for North by 35 Music Conferette.

Reel-to-reel time This just in: The eighttrack tape isn’t dead. You heard us. Pull those buds out of your ears and pay a reverent moment to the eighttrack. Musician and music historian (at least we think so) Bucks Burnett is bringing his recording antiques to Denton for North by 35 Music Conferette. For those of you who are iPod enthusiasts: The eighttrack tape was a reel-to-reel music recording. The technology was found in 1960s-era Ford Mustangs, for instance. Even though the tapes themselves were finicky, music fans loved their portability. The format faded starting in the 1970s, but the endless loop format has a place in the hearts of those like Burnett, Earotica music store owner. You’ll see eight-track recordings of acts like the Beatles, the Rutles and Led Zeppelin. Another bonus: Burnett curates “Metal Machine Music: 35 Years,” which celebrates the 35th anniversary release of Lou Reed’s 1975 double album. Burnett has sealed eight-tracks of rare Velvet Underground releases. There are also tracks by Reed’s peers. If you have a NX35 wrist-

band, you get into the museum free. If you don’t, admission is a paltry $2. Who we’re excitReed ed about: DJ MomJeans, also known as That 70s Show’s Danny Masterson. We didn’t know he had any funk in him. Confirmed: The Saturday night concert — with the Flaming Lips and Midlake — is annexed to the North

Texas Fairgrounds, at 2217 N. Carroll Blvd. You can get into the show for free. Wristband holders move to the front of the line. Wanna go? All-access wristbands are $65. Allvenue wristband for all single-night programming are $20, but Saturday singlenight wristbands are sold out. Patrons must present valid ID and a voucher to pick up their wristbands at artist and registration checkin between noon and 8 p.m. during the festival. No walkup wristbands will be sold. Buying early is wise. Register for your wristband at www.nx35.com. — Lucinda Breeding

Billy Brent Malkus and Rebecca Lucille Cannon are the heart and soul of the Austin-based Texas Sapphires. The country-Americana act has the usual suspects — banjo, fiddle, guitar and drums. The duo plays a CD release show Saturday at Dan’s Silverleaf.

Rebecca Lucille Cannon, Malkus’ other musical half in the band, got her feet wet in the Austin pop-punk scene. Together, they turn out a sort of Americana-country on their latest, As He Wanders. It’s a little bit June-and-Johnny, and a lot beer-hall swing styling. The Texas Sapphires have everything a Texas folk-blues fan needs: competent fiddling, rhythmic picking and soulful harmonies. The band doesn’t allude to blues in the context of Delta rock. The blues spun by the Sapphires comes from an Appalachian spring. As He Wanders stays mostly on the down side, mood-wise. Sure, you can cut a rug to their tunes, but with tracks bearing titles like “Rain or Teardrops,” “Riddled Days” and “How Did I Get So Sloppy Drunk (When I Was Drinkin’ Neat)” anchor the album in some woe-is-me quicksand. — Lucinda Breeding

Dessa brings her cool-cat rhymes and smooth contralto to Hailey’s on Saturday.

Beat keeper Dessa brings indie intellect to her brand of hip-hop

A

fter she was featured on National Public Radio, artist Dessa touched off a hot debate on the NPR Web site about her credibility as a hip-hop artist. But that’s how the contralto is marketed — a hip-hop artist with indie and emo leanings. It’s Dessa’s mash-up of styles that probably get the arguments churning. In terms of music, Dessa’s background sound percolates more than it bumps. And then there’s the vocabulary — Dessa exchanges the pedestrian code of “ho” and “playa” and substitutes more literary labels. She doesn’t deal in posturing and threats. attraction. In “Dots and Dashes,” Dessa compares the slap of a double-dutch jump rope to the switchy patterns of her craft. And on A Badly Broken Code, her full-length album, Dessa twines Spanish around English and jazzy keyboards in “Sadie Hawkins.” She’s a woman for the new world, with one toe wisely planted in the past, when femme fatales twisted up film noir plots with sultry sex appeal and just as much brains. OPENING FRIDAY Saint John of Las Vegas (##) In this slight, shaggy dog story, two insurance investigators (Steve Buscemi and Romany Malco) travel from Albuquerque to Las Vegas to examine whether a stripper (Emmanuelle Chriqui) involved in a car wreck actually suffered injuries and whether her car was demolished. Various contrived, faintly humorous, events play out. With Sarah Silverman, Peter Dinklage, Tim Blake Nelson. Hue Rhodes wrote and directed, with a story credit going to Dante. Go figure. Rated R, 85 minutes. At the Magnolia. — Boo Allen The Crazies (##1/2) In this remake of George Romero’s 1973 sci-fi schlock, a small Iowa town is hit with a deadly virus when a chemical transport airplane goes down nearby. When everyone in town starts acting, well, crazy, government troops invade, killing everyone infected. The sheriff (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) flee, making for a succession of consistently nerve wracking and violent scenes. Entertaining enough genre flick. Rated R, 101 minutes. — B.A. Cop Out A stolen baseball card sets two detectives (Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan) on the path of a memorabilia-obsessed mobster. Directed by Kevin Smith. — The Associated Press Fish Tank (###1/2) Sharply observed, low-budget coming-of-age drama from British director Andrea Arnold (Red Road) tells the story of Mia (dynamite newcomer Katie Jarvis), a rebellious teenage loner with a secret love of hip-hop dance who develops feelings for her single mother’s new boyfriend (Michael Fassbender) during an especially vulnerable time. Arnold and Jarvis capture the raw emotions of the lead character, yet allow room for interpretation when it comes to background and motivation. Not rated, 123 minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. — Todd Jorgenson A Single Man (##1/2) Colin Firth gives a commanding lead portrayal in this adaptation of a Christopher Isherwood novel about George, a gay college professor who becomes suicidal after the death of his lover. He is consoled by an impetuous friend (Julianne Moore) and by a student (Nicholas Hoult) who has doubts about his own life. While Firth feels

A GPS device figures prominently into one of many plots found in The Ghost Writer, a thriller from director Roman Polanski. And that’s convenient, because the gadget will also come in handy to keep track of the film’s many twists and turns. The Ghost Writer is based on Robert Harris’ script, adapted from his historical novel. Harris takes fairly current events and weaves a convoluted conspiracy theory, giving the film both an immediacy and a familiarity. Ewan McGregor plays the nameless freelance writer who lands a well-paying job as ghostwriter for Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan), England’s most recent prime minister. An earlier draft of Lang’s memoirs fully immersed in his character, the film itself is sluggish and more about the scenery than emotional depth. Rated R, 100 minutes. At regional theaters. — T.J.

NOW PLAYING The Book of Eli (##) Denzel

Polanski’s latest — and perhaps last — a personal, political thriller

had already been prepared, but that writer had been found dead on a beach near Lang’s fortress-like compound on Martha’s Vineyard. The professedly apolitical ghostwriter initiates his followup interviews with Lang around the time the International Criminal Court prepares to indict the former prime minister for war crimes. Lang fears he could be handcuffed and dragged away if he returns to England. Lang is an obvious

stand-in for real life former Prime Minister Tony Blair. Lang remains in the United States under government protection that would shield him because it shields the U.S. against similar charges. In these maneuvers, the film works as wish fulfillment for those still seething about past transgressions. The ghostwriter uncovers what he thinks might be incriminating information about Lang, not only whether he condoned water-boarding but also on other shady events. The search leads the writer to: a brief, seemingly gratuitous, encounter with Lang’s wife (Olivia Williams); an island visit with an old-timer (Eli Wallach) versed in the local tides; an inland visit with a college professor (Tom Wilkinson); and a frantic escape from

would-be assassins. Polanski intelligently juggles all the plotlines, taking time to establish motives and to make as clear as possible his rapidly evolving narrative. The director must have found resonance in this story of a celebrated man who might never return to his homeland. Possibly as a result of this selfidentification, Polanski turns his film into a dark exercise in evil. As the film continues, Pawel Edelman’s cinematography grows darker, leaving some latter scenes nearly obscure. Alexander Desplat contributes a Bernard Hermann-like score to ratchet up the suspense further.

Washington does his best to salvage this heavy-handed post-apocalyptic thriller of sorts from the Hughes brothers (Menace 2 Society). He plays a resourceful, spiritual loner who wanders a barren landscape ravaged by war, determined to fulfill a mission that involves a treasured book. There are some interesting

concepts here, but as the film reveals its secrets about the hero’s identity and motives, you realize the script takes itself too seriously, and isn’t clever enough to match. Also stars Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis. Rated R, 117 minutes. — T.J. Crazy Heart (###) Jeff Bridges offers a stunning performance in an

otherwise contrived character study about the redemption of a washedup country music star addicted to booze and women, and who finds himself alone and bankrupt — both financially and creatively. Things improve when he meets a journalist

The Ghost Writer Rated PG-13, 128 minutes. Opens Friday at the Angelika Dallas.

For cast, singing in another tongue not so foreign anymore

By Ellen Sackett Staff Writer

O

pera lovers are in for a rare treat. Bedrich Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, usually sung in English for American audiences, will be presented by the University of North Texas College of Music in its original language — Czech. This romantic romp, one of the most popular operas of all time, is filled with light, folk-like tunes and a story of true love that prevails. “We were surprised how delightful a work it is,” said Opera Director Paula Homer. “When it’s sung in English, it usually comes off stilted or silly.” Homer explained that singing the well-known opera in the original language allows for a more accurate English translation in the supertitles and gives the story a broader scope. Also, the music better fits the syllabic inflections of the language. Faculty member Stephen Morscheck will sing the principal role of Kecal. It’s unusual to cast a faculty member in a student production, but the part demanded a strong bass voice with a wide range. “He’s a fine role model,” Homer said. “I’ve been pleased to have the students watch him prepare a role, how to be disciplined and focus.” Learning Czech hasn’t been easy, and preparations began last November. “We needed experts that could help us,” said Homer. Jiri Petrdlik, a conductor from the Czech Republic, coached the lead singers and conducted some of the rehearsals during a two-week residency last semester. Timothy Cheek, author of Singing in Czech: A Guide to Czech Lyric Diction and Vocal Repertoire, worked with the students to cross the bridge from speaking the language to singing it. Both were sponsored by the Kostohryz Residency, established at UNT through the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. UNT will present The Bartered Bride at 8 p.m. Friday and March 5; and 3 p.m. Sunday and March 7. Performances will be in the Lyric Theater at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 1200 North Texas Blvd. Tickets are $15 to $35 and can be purchased by calling 940-369-7802 or online at www.thempac.com. The cast of The Bartered Bride performs a frenzied scene during dress rehearsal at the Lyric Theatre in the Murchison Performing Arts Center at the University of North Texas on Tuesday. about young Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), who learns of his demi-god status as son of a Greek god and mortal mother. He must travel with his two friends (Brandon T. Jackson and Alexandra Daddario) to the underworld to rescue his mother, while Zeus, Hades, and his father, Poseidon, battle over some lightning bolt. Or something. Decently entertaining if not particularly substantial. Rated PG, 119 minutes. — B.A. The Tooth Fairy (##) A minor league hockey player (Dwayne Johnson), with the nickname Tooth

Fairy because he knocks his opponents’ teeth out, is taken away to fairyland and made to redeem himself when he makes fun of fairies in front of the young daughter of his girlfriend (Ashley Judd, remember her?). Rated PG, 101 minutes. — B.A. Valentine’s Day (##) A big-name cast stars in director Garry Marshall’s sappy romantic comedy

about entangled relationships on Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles. Various romances and nearromances play out as Marshall doles out his familiar broad comedy.
