The Board of Trustees of Lees-McRae College appointed Dr. Barry M. Buxton as the 15th president in the 112-year history of the four-year liberal arts college, as of June 1, 2010. President Buxton’s inauguration was held on October 2, 2010. Before arriving at Lees-McRae, Buxton served as Vice President for Special Projects at the Savannah College of Art and Design. He was the executive liaison to the Savannah, Atlanta and European Boards of Visitors, while holding responsibility for major gift solicitation, leadership development and foundation relations.
Craig McPhail is in his fourth year as Director of Athletics at Lees-McRae College, where he oversees all day-to-day operations of the Lees-McRae athletic department and the 17 sports the college sponsors. This past year, the Bobcat Athletic Department reached new heights under his leadership as all five fall sports teams made the NCAA Tournament and for the first time in five years, both basketball programs reached the Conference Carolinas tournament. The Bobcats’ success on the field resembled their classroom success, as 162 student-athletes made the Presidential Honor Roll for athletics, the second-most in Conference Carolinas.
Buxton is a native of Blowing Rock, N.C., where he has proven to be a vital element to non-profit organizations in Appalachia. Through the 1980s he served as Executive Director of the sixteen-member Appalachian Consortium, in which he worked with faculty on research projects, scholarly conferences and publications related to Appalachia. In 1987, the Blue Ridge Parkway recognized Dr. Buxton for his studies of Mabry Mill, Moses H. Cone Estate, Davey Farm and Brinegar Cabin.
The athletic department has undergone noticeable improvements in his short career, receiving a full-time NCAA Director of Compliance and added banners documenting the department’s NCAA success in the gymnasium. Updated upholstery of the weight room’s equipment has been added, complete with signage banners, and window decals. Major renovations have been undertaken for the women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse locker rooms, in addition to updated field maintenance and fencing around the complex. The athletic department has also launched a new website, as well as significant social media upgrades on his watch.
Dr. Buxton has served as president of science and history museums in North Carolina, Texas and Georgia. He was vice president of the North Carolina Grass Roots Science Museums, and a co-founder of the Houston Museum District Association. In Houston, he worked with former President and First Lady George and Barbara Bush, along with the Harris County Medical Society to establish the Museum of Health and Medical Science.
Newly renovated softball facilities, outdoor tennis complex and press box, along with the re-introduction of the Hall of Fame and establishment of a Bobcat Club have all been accomplished during his short time at the helm.
He is an award-winning author, writing and editing over a dozen books; including “A Village Tapestry: The History of Blowing Rock”, which was recognized in 1989 as the best local history book in North Carolina.
Currently, McPhail serves on the Conference Carolinas Championships and Awards Committee and is the Athletic Director liaison for cross country/track and field.
Through his 35-year career, Dr. Buxton has been a teacher, researcher, publisher, editor and a community leader with extensive international experience. Buxton is a past member of the North Carolina Humanities Council and the Nebraska Humanities Council. He has served for diverse organizations as the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Tennessee State Board of Regents and Texas A&M University. Buxton has earned a pair of degrees from Appalachian State University, including a teacher certification, along with being an E.F. Lovill Fellow. He received his Ph. D. from the University of Nebraska, in which his dissertation was titled “Job Satisfaction of College and University Presidents.” Throughout his career, Dr. Buxton has received high marks for his involvement in community projects. In North Carolina, he was a statewide Chairman of Project Assist (a smoking cessation initiative), and a board member of United Way and the Asheville Chamber of Commerce. Buxton was a member of the Chamber of Commerce executive committee, and served on the boards of Bethesda Home for Boys, YMCA, the Lucas Theatre, Historic Savannah Foundation and the Savannah Economic Development Authority. He was also the first non-hospitality professional to be chosen as Chairman of Savannah’s powerful Convention and Visitors Bureau. Dr. Buxton is married to artist Deborah Keyes Buxton, and they have two sons: Loren, a technology executive in Nebraska, and Peter, whom lives in New York City working in television and commercial production. Dr. Buxton’s vocational interests include tennis, bicycling and landscape architecture.

The Bobcats have played for a NCAA Division II National Championship (men’s soccer 2009) and won several Collegiate Cycling National Championships during his tenure.
McPhail previously worked on community service projects, managed awards banquets, handled publicity and marketing of the athletic department and monitored the overall experience of the student-athletes as Lees-McRae’s assistant athletic director. He has been involved with several College committees for graduation, judicial review, community service and retention. He has represented the College as a member of CoSIDA, United States Cross Country/ Track Coaches Association, USA Track and Field, Conference Carolinas chair for both cross country and track and field, and was recently a chair of the NCAA Division II Cross Country/Track and Field committee. As the men’s and women’s cross country coach for 11 years, his teams showed greatness in and out of the classroom, with 13 conference championships in men’s and women’s cross country, and track and field; McPhail also played an essential role in the re-instatement of the track and field program. He has coached 73 all-conference student-athletes, 31 gaining all-region honors, and has watched them regularly receive Academic All-America honors over the past decade. McPhail guided 38 Lees-McRae student-athletes to NCAA Division II National Championships. In doing so, he has been conference coach of the year 11 times, while earning regional coach of the year honors three times. A member of several organizations, McPhail serves the community well for the local Young Life Organization, the Banner Elk Christian Fellowship Church and the Special Olympics Torch Run. He also is the organizer for the Woolly Worm Road Race, Step Up for Yellow Mountain and the Turkey Trot, while coordinating Lees-McRae Mountain Day and caddying at Diamond Creek Golf Club. He earned his degree in mass communications (journalism) from Winthrop University, with a minor in interpersonal speech. His master’s degree in sport management is from Georgia Southern University. McPhail is married to former Jill Clawson; they are proud parents of son Elijah Boggs McPhail.

Lees-McRae College: Success Elevated • Coaching Staff
Lee Squires Head Men’s Soccer Coach | Second Season | Lees-McRae College, 2011 Lee Squires is in his second season as the head men’s soccer coach at Lees-McRae College. Squires continued to build upon the success of the last five seasons in his first year at the helm, leading the Bobcats to runnerup finishes in the race for both the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament titles. With just five upperclassmen on the roster, Squires led Lees-McRae to an impressive 15-6-1 overall record, including a 9-2 mark in conference play. A native of Sheffield, England, Squires led Lees-McRae to a pair of victories over ranked opponents last season, including a thrilling 1-0 win over No. 7 Coker College in extra time. The Bobcats also advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season under Squires’ guidance, outlasting Anderson in the opening round before falling to No. 10 Flagler in extra time. The Bobcats placed a program-record five players on the NSCAA all-Southeast Region teams in 2011, while earning three selections to the Daktronics all-Southeast Region teams. Five Bobcats garnered all-conference recognition, including senior and first team selection Luke Duffy. Squires, a May 2011 graduate of Lees-McRae, led the Bobcats to the program’s fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance last season, garnering Conference Carolinas Player of the Year honors for the second time in his career. A native of Sheffield, England, Squires enjoyed a tremendous career at Lees-McRae, concluding his tenure as the program’s all-time leader in points (149) and goals (67). In his career with the Bobcats, Squires posted a pair of 20-goal seasons while garnering All-America honors on three occasions. The two-time conference player of the year tallied at least 10 goals in three of his four seasons with the Bobcats, netting 22 match-winners and recording 15 assists, concluding his playing career as one of the top players in program history.

Rita Smith Director of Athletic Training/Senior Woman Administrator | 29th Season Rita Smith has been a cornerstone of the Lees-McRae athletic department for the last 28 years, serving the College in various capacities as the Chair for the Division of Sport and Wellness Studies, Director of Athletic Training Education, Assistant Professor of Athletic Training Education, and Senior Woman Administrator for Athletics. Smith was instrumental in the development of the athletic training program at Lees-McRae, building the program from the ground up and serving as the College’s first full-time athletic trainer. Smith came to Lees-McRae in 1983 as an athletic trainer, assistant basketball and assistant tennis coach as well as associate dormitory director. Over the years she has guided the growth of the athletic training program from just herself, to its current level as an CAATE accredited program with four additional certified athletic trainers and thirteen athletic training students. During her time at Lees-McRae, Smith has also worked numerous camps and special events from Dave Cowens Basketball Schools to Special Olympic World Games and NCAA Division II Track & Field Championship. Smith earned her Bachelor of Science from University North Carolina Greensboro and her Master of Arts from Appalachian State University. She is a NATA certified athletic trainer as well as a North Carolina licensed athletic trainer. Smith currently resides in Banner Elk, N.C.
Merritt Yackey Assistant Director of Athletics/External Operations | Third Season Merritt Yackey is in his third season as the assistant athletic director for external operations at Lees-McRae. Yackey assists with fundraising efforts and special projects within the Bobcat athletic department and its 17 intercollegiate sports. Yackey is also in his second year as the Bobcats’ head softball coach, taking the reins of a program that finished the 2009 season with a 23-19 overall record, which marked the school’s first winning campaign in 10 years. In his first season with the Bobcats, Yackey led the program to a 12-32 record and a 5-13 mark in Conference Carolinas play. He took the Bobcats to new heights in 2010, leading Lees-McRae to a 26-27 overall record and the program’s first-ever winning season in conference play with a 10-8 mark against league opponents. For his efforts, Yackey was named the Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year, as the Bobcats placed four on the all-conference teams. Yackey brings over 25 years of experience in higher education. He was Director of Development/Special Giving at Albion College from 1988-1993, Director of Development at Converse College from 1995-1996, Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving at Catawba College from 1997-2000, Special Assistant to the President/Campaign Director at Limestone College from 2000-2002, Vice President for Development at Mansfield University from 20022004 and Vice President for Advancement at Lees-McRae College from 2004-2007. Yackey also served as the head softball coach at local Avery High School from 2007-2009.
Whitney Noble Sports Information Director | Third Season | University of Tampa, 2008 Whitney Noble is in his third year as the Sports Information Director in the Lees-McRae athletic department. Noble is responsible for all sports information needs of Lees-McRae’s 17 intercollegiate sports. Noble joins the Bobcats from nearby Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., where he served as the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations for two years. While at Tusculum, Noble served as the primary contact for the Pioneer men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, softball, cross country, and men’s and women’s tennis programs. A native of Boxborough, Mass., Noble completed his Bachelor’s of Science degree in sport management from the University of Tampa in May 2008. Noble worked in the Spartans’ sports information office as a student assistant from 2004-07, before being named to the assistant director post prior to the 2007-08 academic year. During his undergraduate years at Tampa, Noble covered 13 of UT’s 16 athletic teams in various capacities, serving as the primary contact for men’s soccer in 2006 and 2007, as well as baseball in 2008. While at Tampa, he helped write and design several media guides for soccer, baseball, basketball, and volleyball, as well as being the primary designer of the 2008 baseball media guide. The 2006 Tampa Men’s Soccer media guide, which he helped produce, was selected third in the nation (Division B) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Noble brings a tremendous amount of championship experience with him, having been an integral part of the sports information staff at a number of NCAA Tournament events throughout his career, including serving as the primary statistician and media contact for the 2008 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Men’s Soccer Tournament, which was hosted by Tusculum. In 2007-08, he also served on the statistics staff for the NCAA Division III Soccer National Championship in Orlando, Fla. and the NCAA II South Regional Baseball Tournament, hosted by Tampa. In 2007, he also worked with ESPN with the Arena Football Playoffs in Tampa.
Gene Renfro Director of Compliance | First Season Gene Renfro is in his first season as the Director of Compliance at Lees-McRae College. Renfro brings a tremendous amount of experience in collegiate athletics to Lees-McRae, having served as the first full-time sports information director at fellow Conference Carolinas member King College from 2009 to 2011. During his tenure at the Bristol, Tenn. school, Renfro served as the primary media contact for King’s 22 intercollegiate athletic programs, playing an integral role in the College’s transition from the NAIA ranks to the NCAA Division II level, while publicizing King’s first two NCAA II national championship teams. Prior to his arrival at King, Renfro served as the assistant sports information director at Union College (Ky.) for two years. While at Union, Renfro functioned as the primary contact for 14 of the Bulldogs’ intercollegiate athletic programs, as well as the secondary contact for the football, women’s basketball, bowling, and baseball teams. Renfro’s career in college athletics began at Milligan in the fall of 2001, where he spent his undergraduate years as a student assistant and intern in the sports information office, as well as a student assistant coach with the baseball program. After graduation, Renfro returned to Milligan as the College’s sports information director and director of men’s basketball operations during the 2005-2006 season. A native of Johnson City, Tenn., Renfro has recently served as a sports writer with the Johnson City Press, Elizabethton Star and tricitiessports.com, as well as working on the game day staff at East Tennessee State University as an instant replay official. Renfro holds a Master of Art degree in physical education from East Tennessee State, and a Bachelor of Science in communications from Milligan. The Carter County product has also been nominated for inclusion in the inaugural class of the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame for his service to the County and surrounding area.

Lees-McRae Athletics: Success Elevated • Season Outlook The Lees-McRae men’s soccer program is primed for another outstanding season in Lee Squires’ second season at the helm, hoping to build on the foundation established in the Bobcats’ run to their fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament last fall. Tabbed third in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Coaches’ Poll after finishing second in the race for both the regular season and tournament titles last season, the Bobcats are ready to prove to the league and the nation that they are still one of the top teams in the NCAA Division II ranks three years removed from advancing to the national championship match in 2009. Lees-McRae put together a strong campaign in Squires’ first season at the helm in 2011, posting a 15-6-1 overall record Lee Squires while finishing runner-up in the Head Coach conference standings with a 9-2 mark against league opponents. The Bobcats advanced to the championship match of the league tournament, suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Coker College. Despite the setback, the Bobcats punched the program’s fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, edging Anderson University (S.C.) in extra time before falling to No. 10 Flagler College in the next round. Several Bobcats garnered individual recognition last season, including senior Luke Duffy (Wakefield, England), who became the second player in program history to earn all-Conference Carolinas in each of his four years in the Green and Gold after earning first team honors in 2011. Duffy and freshman James Smith (Eastbourne, England) each earned a spot on both the Daktronics and NCAA all-Southeast Region teams, while Smith garnered all-conference second team honors in his first season with the Bobcats. FORWARDS James Galvani (High Wycombe, England) returns for his junior season to anchor the Bobcat attack, coming off a strong sophomore campaign in which he posted 11 goals, four assists, and 26 points to earn a spot on the all-conference first team. The 6-3, 175-pound forward will be joined in the attacking third by a pair of newcomers, as well as perhaps the Bobcats’ best goal scorer in the clutch last season. Scott Alford (Hillsborough, N.C.) is back for his sophomore season after recording seven goals and 15 points last fall, including two match-winners and three equalizers. The North Durham High School product delivered two of the most memorable goals in the Junoir James Galvani program’s recent history last 2011 Daktronics all-Southeast Region season, leveling proceedings at the death at Mount Olive (Oct. 15) and Limestone (Oct. 25) to force extra time and propel the Bobcats to a pair of pivotal victories. Freshmen Branding Starling (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) and Jacob Copeland (Raleigh, N.C.) round out the Bobcats’ attacking options this season, providing Squires with considerable depth and several alternate styles of play. Starling comes to Lees-McRae from Fuquay-Varina High School, where he earned the Iron Man Award. Copeland joins the Bobcats from William G. Enloe High School in Raleigh, N.C., where he was a four-time academic all-conference selection, as well as a member of the 2011 state championship team with his club program, 93 CASL Elite. MIDFIELDERS A quartet of talented sophomores and an emerging junior return to anchor the center of the park for the Bobcats, as Smith, Preston Shahdad (Charlotte, N.C.), Andrew Shoemaker (Cary, N.C.), and Ryan Gillespie are back for their sophomore campaigns following strong rookie seasons in the Green and Gold. Smith shined in his first season with the Bobcats, garnering all-conference and all-region honors after posting six goals, 20 points, and a team-leading eight assists last fall. The Eastbourne, England native will likely be called upon to anchor the midfield unit for the Bobcats once again after starting each of Lees-McRae’s 22 matches in 2011. Shahdad is back for his sophomore season after posting three goals and two assists on the wing last fall, making 14 starts and providing a pair of matchwinners for the Bobcats. Shoemaker will look to follow a strong rookie campaign with an even better sophomore season, having started every match for the Bobcats last fall while logging over 2,000 minutes on the pitch. Gillespie made 16 starts for the Bobcats last season, scoring three goals and delivering a pair of match-winners.

DeSanto rounds out the veteran midfield corps, having appeared in six matches last season. The junior midfielder and his sophomore counterparts will be joined in the center of the park by freshmen Sebastian Behan (Sarasota, Fla.), Naeem Griffith (Paget, Bermuda), Jake Wimberley (Cary, N.C.), Nolan Hendrix (Danville, Va.), and Matthew Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) in what could prove to be one of the deepest midfield Sophomore James Smith units in the conference. 2011 all-Conference Carolinas selection Behan comes to LeesMcRae from Riverview High School in Riverview, Fla., where he was a three-time scholar athlete and a two-year captain. Griffith joins the Bobcats after a successful prep career at the Darlington School in Rome, Ga. where he was honored with the Founder’s Award, which is given to someone who exemplifies a person that is not afraid to take the path less chosen. Wimberley dons the Green and Gold following a strong career at Panther Creek High School in Cary, N.C., where he was selected to three academic allconference teams and was a four-time member of the honor roll. Hendrix joins the Bobcats from Tunstall High School in Danville, Va., where he earned second team all-region honors in 2011 in addition to being a threetime all-metro selection. Cureton rounds out the midfield corps for Lees-McRae, coming to Banner Elk from Cuthbertson High School in Waxhaw, N.C., where he was named conference player of the year while also earning all-conference and all-region honors. DEFENDERS John Williams (Rutherfordton, N.C.) returns for his senior season to anchor the Bobcat backline, having made 17 starts last fall while tallying one goal and two assists. Williams will be joined in the Bobcats’ veteran defensive unit by Scott Hudgins (Fort Myers, Fla.), Brandon Meade (Mocksville, N.C.), and TC Stephens (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.). Freshmen James Abraham (Maidstone, England) and Travis Stover (Titusville, Fla.) will round out the defensive corps for the Bobcats, and are expected to compete for playing time along the backline and perhaps a spot in the starting 11. Hudgins comes back for Junior Thomas Rusling his junior season after a strong 2011 Daktronics & NSCAA all-Southeast Region sophomore campaign in which he totaled three goals, all matchwinners, in 13 starts. Stephens returns for his sophomore season after making 19 starts last fall, tallying two assists in over 1,500 minutes of match time. Meade will look to compete for playing time this season after seeing limited action in 2011. Abraham joins the Bobcats from Maidstone Grammar School in Maidstone, England, where he was a two-time Player of the Year, while also playing for the Maidstone United reserves. Stover comes to Lees-McRae from Titusville High School in Titusville, Fla., where he was a two-time scholar athlete and a member of a defensive unit which allowed just 15 goals in 22 matches. Ruppert dons the Green and Gold following a stellar prep career at Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville, N.C., where he was a three-time all-conference selection as well as a two-time team MVP. Richards comes to Lees-McRae from North Asheville Christian School, where he was a four-time all-conference selecton. GOALKEEPERS Rusling returns to solidify the Bobcat defense between the pipes, heading into his junior season ranked third in program history in goals against average, and fourth in both save percentage and shutouts. The 6-0, 175-pound net minder will likely reprise his role as the starting goalkeeper for the Bobcats after making 40 starts in his first two seasons. Freshman Gus Pederson (Sarasota, Fla.) joins the Bobcats from Riverview High School in Riverview, Fla., where he was a three-time scholar athlete and two-year captain. Pederson is expected to compete for playing time and backup Rusling in the goalkeeping rotation for the Bobcats. OUTLOOK With a youthful, veteran corps returning and a talented recruiting class in the fold, Lees-McRae appears well prepared for both the present and the future, facing a demanding schedule right out of the gate. The Bobcats will open the season against one of the preseason favorites to claim the national title, hosting No. 2 Lynn University, last year’s national runner-up, to start the campaign on Friday, August 31.

2011 Season in Review The Lees-McRae men’s soccer program barely skipped a beat in Lee Squires’ first season at the helm in 2011, making a strong run to the final of the Conference Carolinas Tournament after finishing runner-up to tournament champion Coker College in the race for the regular season title. Squires led a young, hungry team into preseason, bringing 13 freshmen into the fold while returning a strong veteran core of Luke Staats (Almere, Holland), David Palmer (South Shields, England), and Luke Duffy (Wakefield, England). The Bobcats opened the season with five straight one-goal decisions, registering a hard-fought 2-1 victory over perennial region and national contender Flagler College and outlasting St. Andrews University, 1-0, in extra time to begin their conference slate. Following a 2-2 draw with Tusculum College and an away setback against Anderson University, the Bobcats rebounded with six consecutive wins, including a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Mount Olive College in extra time on Oct. 15. The victory capped a torrid scoring streak for sophomore James Galvani (High Wycombe, England), as the 6-3, 175-pound forward netted his first career treble to close out a five-match stretch in which he totaled nine goals. The Bobcats then posted perhaps the result of the season a week later, upsetting then-seventh-ranked Coker, 1-0, in the 14th minute of extra time to stay in the hunt for their fifth straight conference title. Preston Shahdad (Charlotte, N.C.) delivered the winner for the Bobcats, finding the back of the net for the third time last season. Lees-McRae traveled to Limestone three days later and achieved the desired result, edging the Saints by a 2-1 margin in extra time. Freshman Scott Alford (Hillsborough, N.C.) provided his third clutch equalizer of the season at the death, James Galvani leveling proceedings with less than a minute to go in regulation. Ryan Gillespie (Holly Springs, N.C.) provided the deciding strike midway through the 102nd minute, taking a cross from Staats and beating the keeper to clinch the second seed in 2011 NSCAA all-Southeast Region Third Team the conference tournament. Retribution proved to be the theme of the conference tournament for the Bobcats, as Coach Squires’ side squared off against King College in the quarterfinal round in a rematch of an early season meeting, which ended in a 4-3 decision in favor of the Tornado. The Bobcats quickly took control of the match, receiving goals from Alford and Gillespie less than four minutes apart to take a 2-0 advantage into the interval. King would halve the margin to 2-1 midway through the second half, but the Bobcat defense clamped down the rest of the way to preserve the victory and advance to the semifinal. Lees-McRae got another chance at retribution in the semifinal round, squaring off against Erskine College, which defeated the Bobcats by a 3-1 margin two weeks prior. The Bobcats would turn the tables on the Flying Fleet, striking for three goals in the first 45 minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the half en route to a 3-1 victory. Squires and the Bobcats would take the pitch against a familiar foe in the tournament final, traveling to Hartsville, S.C. for a rematch of the 2011 championship against Coker. On this occasion, the result would not go in the Bobcats’ favor, as the Cobras capitalized early in the second half for the match’s only goal en route to their first conference championship in school history. Both teams would earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament, with Coker being chosen to host as the top seed and Lees-McRae garnering the sixth spot. The Bobcats would draw Anderson in the opening round in a rematch of an early season tilt in which the Trojans registered a 4-0 victory. Lees-McRae refused to let history repeat itself in the second season, tallying two early goals to take a 2-0 advantage into the interval following strikes from Galvani and Gillespie. Anderson responded early in the second half, leveling proceedings with goals in the 47th and 58th minutes to send the match into extra time. The Bobcats would deliver the decisive strike with less than a minute remaining in the first extra time period, advancing to the first round when Alford and Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, England) set up Smith for the winner. The Bobcats would face a familiar foe once again in the first round, squaring off against No. 10 Flagler in Hartsville, S.C., who Lees-McRae defeated by a score of 2-1 in the second match of the season. Much like in the teams’ first meeting in September, Flagler struck first, taking a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the opening half. Lees-McRae answered just over eight minutes into the second 45 when Smith sent a free kick curling into the back of the net from 25 yards out, putting the Bobcats back on level pegging with his sixth goal of the season. Neither team would find the winner through the remainder of regulation, sending the match into extra time knotted at 1-1. Following a scoreless first period of extra time, Flagler struck quickly in the second 10 minutes, netting the decisive goal after just 16 seconds to seal the victory and end the Bobcats’ run in the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats once again enjoyed a tremendous award season in 2011, placing five on the all-Conference Carolinas team, including Duffy, who became the second player in program history to earn all-conference honors in each of his four years in the Green and Gold. Galvani earned a spot on the first team alongside Duffy, while Smith and senior Luke Staats (Almere, Holland) garnered second-team honors. Rusling earned a spot on the third team as well, while also garnering Daktronics all-Southeast Region Third team James Smith honors. Duffy and Smith were recognized on both the Daktronics and NSCAA all-Southeast Region teams, as a school2011 Daktronics all-Southeast Region Second Team record five Bobcats garnered NSCAA all-Southeast Region honors.

Lees-McRae College: Success Elevated • Conference Carolinas
Conference Carolinas is a NCAA Division II athletics conference made up of 12 teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. These institutions consist of: Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Coker College, Converse College, Erskine College, King College, Lees-McRae College, Limestone College, Mount Olive College, North Greenville University, Pfeiffer University, and Queens University of Charlotte. The league supports eighteen season-ending conference championship tournaments with nine women’s and nine men’s sports. Sports that are sponsored with NCAA automatic qualifications include: Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Golf, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Cross Country, and Women’s Volleyball. NCAA regional and national selection opportunities in Men’s Soccer, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Outdoor Track & Field, Women’s Outdoor Track & Field, Women’s Golf and Men’s Volleyball are also available based on end of year regional rankings and/or season results. Conference Commissioner, Dr. Alan Patterson about the conference says, “Conference Carolinas is recognized regionally and nationally as a premier NCAA Division II conference which champions scholarship athletics working in concert with student athlete’s committed to academic success.” History Conference Carolinas has a rich tradition in roots that date back to its early initial inception on December 6th, 1930. The conference was formed then as an athletic association “for the greater advantage of the small colleges in North Carolina”. The official name given back then was the North State Intercollegiate Conference but known informally as the Old North State Conference. The birthplace was the Washington Duke Hotel in Durham, NC and the seven charter members were Appalachian, Atlantic Christian (now Barton College), Catawba, Guilford, Elon, High Point, and Lenoir-Rhyne. The conference followed a policy of expansion for a period of time. Western Carolina became a member in 1933, East Carolina in 1947, Pfeiffer in 1960, Newberry in 1961, and Presbyterian in 1964, followed closely by Mars Hill. With the acceptance of the first member from South Carolina in Newberry College, a name change became necessary. Thus on May 20, 1961 the official name of the conference was changed to the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) but commonly known less formerly as the Carolinas Conference. East Carolina resigned in 1962 to join the Southern Conference and Appalachian and Western Carolina followed. Football sponsorship in the Carolinas Conference was dropped in 1973 when Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry, Presbyterian, and Mars Hill joined the South Atlantic Conference. Pembroke State University became a first-time member in 1976 followed by Wingate College in 1979, and Lenoir-Rhyne rejoined in 1984. While Guilford College withdrew in 1988, St. Andrews and Mount Olive were added that same year. The 1989-90 academic year started a new era as Catawba, Elon, Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate all withdrew to compete in the first year that the South Atlantic Conference would provide championships in all sports, not just football. The Carolinas Conference then added Belmont Abbey in 1989, Coker College in 1991, and Lees-McRae in 1993. The 1993-94 academic year brought a change to the conference national affiliation. The conference entered dual membership into both the NAIA DI and NCAA DII affiliation. The 1995-96 year brought dramatic change to the conference. First, full membership into NCAA Division II was acquired and NAIA affiliation dropped. Thus, this was the first official year of full competition and championship play for the conference in NCAA DII status. Secondly, this was also the same year that Erskine, Longwood, & Queens were accepted as full members of the conference. With Longwood becoming the first Virginia member, another name change occurred and the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (known more universally as the ‘CVAC’) was born. Following the 1997 academic year High Point resigned to join the NCAA DI ranks while in 1998 Limestone soon joined and were quickly followed by Anderson in 1999. In 2003, Longwood University left the conference to explore possibilities in NCAA Division I. Then in 2005 the CVAC added Converse College as an affiliate member before becoming a full member starting in the 2007-08 season. With the lone Virginia school in Longwood leaving, the league decided to go back to their roots and change their name to Conference Carolinas in 2007. On June 1st 2011, King College and North Greenville University became official members of the conference and opened the conference to its first Tennessee member in King. With both schools joining, the league now has 13 full member institutions and currently still remains one of the elite NCAA DII conferences in the nation. Many institutions have been members of the league during its rich history including Anderson, Appalachian, Atlantic Christian (now Barton College), Belmont Abbey, Catawba, Coker, Converse, East Carolina, Erskine, Guilford, Elon, High Point, King, Lees-McRae, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone, Longwood, Mars Hill, Mount Olive, Newberry, North Greenville, Pembroke State, Pfeiffer, Presbyterian, Queens, St. Andrews, Western Carolina and Wingate. Barton is the only remaining charter member followed in longevity by Pfeiffer’s membership in 1960 and then Mount Olive’s and St. Andrews both joining in 1988.
