Recent issues of our Federation Connection—the monthly newsletter we send to our federation congregations—have included faculty and staff responses to why they’re thankful to serve at your Lakeside, along with recollections of moments that demonstrate the value of the investment of time and resources for the families who choose LLHS for their children. A new season of football makes us want to share the thoughts of a former Warrior player and current coach:
Mr. Andy Asmus has served the Federation at Lakeside Lutheran High School as a social studies instructor and coach since 2003. He also graduated from LLHS in 1988, which makes his time here especially gratifying for him, to remember the lessons and opportunities given him as a student, and how sometimes it takes years before the treasure that is Christian education truly sinks in. Andy shares: “I teach at LLHS because it gives me the opportunity to work with young Christian adults, to give them the chance I had when I was here.What separates us from other schools is the Christian environment. Devotions are one evidence of this special place and time for teens. “As a Warrior football coach, one of my greatest joys is our pre-game devotion. Before every Friday night varsity football game, we meet with the players at 3:15. We start our game preparations with a 10-15 minute devotion, led by our head coach Paul Bauer. Each of our devotions is themed with a certain character trait: leadership, servant-like attitude, humility, among others. “In preparation for tough competition on Friday nights, coach Bauer shows the kids the most important aspect of Lakeside by pulling the team together and taking the time to dive into the Word of God before the game. What a great joy it is to study God’s Word together. As a high school student I know I failed to cherish that daily immersion in God’s Word, especially those moments when we worship together in non-traditional settings. This Christian education provides those settings and I am proud that I have the opportunity to help kids see the importance of embracing every opportunity study God’s Word. “We conclude each devotion with a hymn. In recent seasons we have sung the hymn “Speak Oh Lord.” Not too many experiences stay in my mind as does the singing of this hymn with those 30-40 high school boys. We ask for the Lord to guide us with His word in the halls of LLHS and also on the athletic field. “There are some moments in life that mark you forever. When my kids were young, I would sing “I Am Jesus Little Lamb” to them. Some moments you never want to be forgotten. When my time on earth is finished—at my funeral—I want two hymns to be sung: “I Am Jesus Little Lamb” and “Speak Oh Lord.”.”

The Warrior Times Weekly (byline James Beeson ‘14) reported it recently: “In August of 1979, Lakeside met Thomas “Louie” Stallman for the first time as he began his work as a custodian. 35 years later, Lakeside is saying goodbye to a student icon. “When [summer] ended, so did the [full-time] career of Louie, the school’s beloved “janny.” “Most of all the kids, definitely what I’m going to miss are the kids,” Louie said. “I’m tired of getting bossed around by the clock, but that’s it, just the clock.” page 4 | Lakeside Lutheran Link | Issue 6, Fall 2014 | llhs.org
Dr. Dennis Gulczynski seems to have been a part of the Lakeside family for as long as anyone can remember. He joined the family in 1973—the same year as other notables including Mr. and Mrs. Jim and Gwen Pasbrig and Coach Dale Walz. He served as the guidance counselor every year since until his retirement at the end of the 2013-14 school year. Standard questions at the end of a tenure include “what memories will you take with you?” Referring to him by the nickname that certainly every Lakeside student committed to memory—especially when needing to write his name—Dr. G replied in true Dr. G style: “There are too many memories of students to pull out of my memory banks.” After all, it’s been 41
Since then, other staff changes—such as the retirement of another faithful LLHS custodian, Bill Hirschfeld, who left to devote more time to his lawn mowing and snow removal business—created an opening for a part-time morning custodian. Louie applied...and was hired before he even finished his full-time work! So has Louie retired after all? Let’s call it the best of both worlds—he gets to stay among his favorites— Lakeside students—and needs only be a slave to the clock until 10 a.m. Happy “retirement,” Lou!

years; it’s easy to imagine the difficulty in deciding which to mention. He decided on a safe bet: “Most memorable moment? The day a student rode his motorcycle down the hallway.” Many of his fondest memories come from his coaching days. Dr. G led teams for many years—and experienced great success. He mentioned the pride and joy in seeing two of his wrestlers place in the state tournament. He also treasures the memory of leading the 1983 football team to a state championship. He decided to retire because he “felt it was time to move on to the next phase of life and see what the LORD has in store.” He plans to spend time pursuing his love of travel and photography. He also looks forward to spending much more time with his wife, Barb (who some might remember worked at Lakeside in 1987-88 in the Home Ec department). Dr. Gulczynski shares this parting message with the Lakeside family: “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Lord all of these years. I have enjoyed and will miss the students. I have also enjoyed working with Christian colleagues. The Christian work atmosphere is one of the real blessings of serving the Lord in his ministry. I am also thankful to my wife and family for supporting me through the sports I coached and being patient as I pursued my graduate schooling.” The “family” responds with prayers for a blessed retirement! Nationally, FFA includes more than 575,000 student members in 7,570 local FFA chapters, with a “mission...to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education... today, we are still the Future Farmers of America. But, we are the Future Biologists, Future Chemists, Future Veterinarians, Future Engineers and Future Entrepreneurs of America, too.” Your Lakeside Lutheran just received notice of its designation as chapter #307 in Wisconsin—the first private school charter in the state—after a 12-year cooperation with Lake Mills High School FFA. Jeff Meske, Lakeside Tech Ed teacher and FFA advisor, has watched the program double in membership and activity since he began his call here in fall 2013. Eleven students traveled to the National FFA Convention in October. Two were on the State FFA equine judging team that placed first in Madison. Several participated in Supervised Agriculture Experiences (SAE), from dairy farming to County Fair showings. With more than 25 students showing interest this fall, he fully expects even more involvement with the various leadership development activities sponsored by the state organization. In other agriculture-related developments, Meske and our Extended Learning Center have begun to provide alternative work experiences for students with postgraduate ag interests. Meske has also developed an “Agriculture Survey” course that will be offered to grades 10–12 in the fall of 2015. Equipping for Life, for Eternity: these words are why our forefathers established Lakeside Lutheran High School over 50 years ago. These words sum up the purpose for its existence today, and they will serve as a guide as Lakeside moves into the future. Equipping for Life, for Eternity is part of the school’s plans for a “renewed” mission and updated 10-year vision statements. Finally, it’s also the theme for the Ministry Partnership Program that you’ll be seeing more of in the coming months. By God’s grace, your Lakeside Lutheran will continue to equip our teens —not just for lives of service here on earth—but also for eternity with Jesus. As a friend of Lakeside’s ministry, you have already been a partner in spirit, encouraging us as we bring the gospel to our teens in God’s ministry here at Lakeside. Perhaps you have even given of your time, talents and treasure; through this, you have helped equip our teens for this life and for eternity. We thank you for that. God’s promise is to you as well: “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it out to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” You’ll be seeing more about this opportunity for partnership from the Lakeside Lutheran Resource Development Committee in upcoming publications and video, as we explain the purpose and details more clearly. For now, we’re just appreciating our past together, and prayerfully awaiting the future, always guided by the Lord. Nicollet High School and Allison is in her last year of grad school, in clinical internships. She graduates May 2015 with a doctorate in Physical Therapy. Jackie (Hoeft ‘11) writes: July 6 was Peter (Behl ‘11) and my 1st anniversary. We are currently renting an apartment in Platteville while Peter finishes his last year at UW Platteville. When we married, we adopted a Rottweiler named Katie who is now a year and half old. Over the summer Peter completed an internship with Epic as a software engineer. I worked as a manager at Papa Murphy’s in Fort Atkinson. Emily Schultz ‘10 graduated from UW–Eau Claire with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications. Kiara (Winters ‘10) and Benjamin Ristow ‘09 were married at St. Luke Watertown on July 19, 2014. Attendants included Kyle Ashley ‘09, Amanda Lemke ‘10, Amanda (Winters ‘04) Main, Laura McManama ‘10 and Tommy Thrams ‘08. Kiara is daughter of Jim (‘86) & Kimara (Knief ‘86) Winters. Ryan Bufton ‘09 graduated from UW-Stevens Point with a bachelor’s in Psychology and Sociology. He presented research at the American Psychological Association national conference in Hawai’i in summer 2013. He is pursuing a masters in Social Work with a concentration in behavioral health from UW-M, with a goal to become a certified licensed psychotherapist and clinical assistant professor of social work. Writes Amanda (Silha ‘09) Stefanski: I married my best friend Dustin on July 19, 2013. On June 15, 2014 Kyle Hinstorff ‘09 experienced a personal dream come true: he was an NBA Champion. In February he took a sales position with the San Antonio Spurs and so along with the entire organization, was encouraged to claim a piece of the championship. Allison (Homan ‘08) and Ben Petzel were married in Madison on July 5, 2014. and now live in Mankato, MN. Ben teaches social studies at
Katie (Schommer ‘08) and John Cleven ‘08 were married on December 28, 2013. Katie received her masters in Psychology in August and is pursuing a doctorate in Child Psychology. Elisa Nedow ‘07 married Kevin Menzer on July 5, 2014, in Sheboygan, WI.
Heather (Gronholz ‘06) and Dan Karow ‘06 were married on September 7, 2013 and welcomed son Karsten on July 24, 2014. Karsten joins big brother Garrett, age 5. Jordan ‘06 and Katie Lorenz share: “Braxton James Lorenz was born on January 27 and is growing up quickly. One of his favorite things is his LLHS football helmet sitting on his dresser.”
Keith Peterson ‘05 passed his social work boards and is now a Licensed Social Worker in Minnesota. Marissa Nicole Alves was born on April 14, 2014 to Lindsey (Niedfeldt ‘03) and Joseph Alves. She joins big sister Mikayla, 4 at home in East Providence, Rhode Island. Twin brothers Silas Grant and Levi Michael were born to Ryan and Laura (Nehmer ‘99) Jaeger ‘99 on February 28, 2014. They join older brothers Joseph James and Matthew Ryan. Ryan recently accepted a call as teacher/principal at St. John in Two Rivers, WI. Elizabeth Rose was born on May 4, 2014 and welcomed through adoption by Phil (‘99) and Becky Roever. She joins big sister Katelyn (4). Elizabeth was baptized on May 7, 2014. Paula (Mueller ‘96) Sulzle writes: “After 10 wonderful years of Pete serving as pastor in Rapid City, SD, we have moved to Redwood Falls, MN, where he accepted the call as lead pastor. God has blessed us with 6 children: Camden (12), Hope (11), Alana (10), Noah (8), Gabriel (6) and Josiah (4). I have the privilege of being a stay-at-home wife and mom, while still having opportunities to teach in the classroom and be involved in many ways at our churches and schools.” Benjamin Allen Wiechmann was born on March 23, 2014 to Kathy (Hulstein ‘95) and Michael Wiechmann ‘98. They make their home in Fort Atkinson. James Kirst e-mailed a fun class of ‘74 40th Reunion report...attended by Andy Zastrow and James at Bublitz’s in Lomira.
