Isaiah 12:2b “The Lord is my Strength and my Song.” These words of scripture provided the focus for a great weekend last November 7–9 as Lakeside hosted the WELS National Choral Festival. Twenty-one of our WELS high schools from around the nation came together to provide 450 singers, using their Godgiven musical gifts to present both a Pops Concert and a Sacred Concert. What made this event even more special was the opportunity to bring back three Lakeside alums: Casey Pufahl (Class of 1997), choral director at St. Croix Lutheran High School; Glen Pufahl (Class of 2000), our own Lakeside band director; and Andrea Oppermann (Class of 2002), choral director at Arizona Lutheran to serve as clinicians, working so ably with the singers in preparation for the Sunday Sacred Concert. This was a huge event that could not have happened smoothly without the help and cooperation of our Lakeside staff, Music Parents Organization, the hosting congregations who housed and fed the students, and the many alums who used their gifts to serve as instrumentalists in the orchestra, as piano accompanists for the choirs, and as leaders in setting up the live streaming of both concerts on the internet, a first in Lakeside history. ...thanks to all —and especially our alumni—who joined the fun at February’s spy-themed Grand Event in support of our priceless teen ministry here at your Lakeside Lutheran. Through a fun and entertaining evening that included a a delicious dinner for a sold-out crowd, silent and live auctions, a dessert auction, 50/50, wine and jewelry raffles, the night netted over $53,000 for the ministry, including $14,200 for Student Tuition Assistance and almost $4,000 toward new convertible tubas for the Warrior Band.

Over 2,000 visitors joined us on campus last November to enjoy God’s gift of music through these talented young people. In addition, the concerts were livestreamed and therefore available to many who could not join us here in person. As many as 688 devices were tuned in to watch and listen each night, and another 600+ were tuned into audio only, spanning 30 states, Brazil, Chile, United Kingdom, Poland, Canada, Australia, Republic of Korea and India. It was truly a weekend when all roads—physical and virtual—led to Lake Mills. The last time Lakeside hosted was a Regional Fest in 1998. For this National Festival, LLHS Choral Director Mr. Jim Buege and many volunteers spent months preparing to host an event of this magnitude, when parking lots expanded onto the grass, buses of almost every color lined the lanes, classrooms took on the look of dorm rooms, the cafeteria fed hundreds in each shift, dozens of congregations became host churches, microphones were bought and borrowed and tweaked, and banners were created and hung with care by our very own emeritus Pastor Martin Stuebs. Lakeside Ladies Guild—whose organization predated our school with its April 1957 constitution— was a Proverbs 31-esque example of support to our ministry for decades. From the well-equipped kitchen provided in 1963, to the countless capital purchases for home economics, music, transportation and the industrial arts departments since, Guild women have been steadfast and enthusiastic, even as members branched into other efforts, such the Coupon Refunding Program in the 70s and the Twice is Nice Retail Store
in the 90s. More than 100 guests celebrated the Guild’s 50th anniversary in 2007. The group disbanded in December, but there was one final project. Under Guild direction, artist Renata Brandenburg created and installed a stained glass design in the middle transom of the inside west entrance windows. Its placement allows all in school to enjoy the gem-like sparkle as sunlight streams through. While meetings are no more, the spirit of the Guild’s commitment to our ministry lives on; we need only to look up and out to be reminded of their legacy.

ay 2009: Zachary Moyle and Ryan Zweifel, both Lakeside Lutheran class of ‘08, had just finished their first year at Martin Luther College. Ryan was planning to be a teacher, and Zach wanted to be a pastor. God had other plans. Enroute to a summer of overseeing a family resort, working in a nearby restaurant, sunning themselves on the beach, and of course, playing plenty of soccer, both boys died in a car accident in the Wisconsin northwoods. Classmate John Cleven wanted to honor the boys’ memories and glorify the Father who took them home. With the help of many, the dream was established through the Ryan J. Zweifel Scholarship Endowment and the Zachary D. Moyle Scholarship Endowment. Each year since, two new LLHS graduates headed to MLC receive the awards—a preseminary student in Zach’s honor and an education major in Ryan’s honor. To honor the boys, celebrate their victory in Christ, fun and fellowship, and further build the fund, the families began an annual event known as RZM—Ryan Zweifel/Zach Moyle— Weekend. Family and friends gather at 7 Mile Pinecrest Resort in Eagle River, Wisconsin, owned by the Otterstatter family (relatives of Moyles) for swimming, campfires, and team competitions in games like water brigade, tug-of-war, canoe races, even a homegrown version of the Tough Mudder. In 2013, they booked a band and enjoyed a night of live music. Attendance at the RZM weekend has reached as many as 175 people, and over $20,000 has been raised for the scholarship endowments and a new award this year (see below).
If you’ve visited the East (aka “new”) gymnasium here on campus recently, you’ve likely noticed the championship boards. A project that had been brewing for some time, Warrior Boosters made it happen last summer with the design and installation assistance of Wisconsin Sign in Oconomowoc. “It was decided that it was time to replace the cloth banners in the West gym,” says Coach Paul Bauer, who oversaw the project. “And we’re happy with a design that allows plenty of room for future success.”

What else might the future hold? Tentative plans include displays that celebrate the four WISAA and four WIAA state championships that Warriors have achieved thus far in their athletic history. Bauer shares that a board that features Warrior Track and Field records is also a goal.

“There usually is a lot more fun than sleep going on,” said Ryan’s brother Jason Zweifel ‘11, in an interview at MLC. “The most important part of the weekend is the fellowship. Each year we have a devotion to reflect on Jesus and what he did for us. We see it as one weekend in the year when...people...can be reminded of the importance of faith—their own personal faith as well as [Ryan’s and Zach’s] faith.” –Adapted from past MLC article
Past athletes have mentioned how much they appreciate the memories, and hope they inspire the future. “It was an honor to compete in the Lakeside athletic system,” writes Grey Davis, a member of the 2011 Boys Cross Country championship team. “It also fuels the dreams of younger kids who walk in that gym, to put their team up there. Thanks for making it possible.”

The courtyard hallway is proud host to a centralized display of WIAA regional championships, sectional runner up/championships and qualifier plaques awarded since 2000, when LLHS joined the WIAA. The earliest on display is the plaque honoring our 10 football playoff qualifying teams in the 11 years from 2000 to 2010. Most recently installed is the history-making regional championship for the boys soccer program in 2012. Fifty-one plaques hang in the hall, with room for 21 more. Martin Luther College junior Alex Anthon ‘11 was named Second Team AllUMAC, while junior Hannah Hackbarth ‘11 received honorable mention in the 2014 UMAC women’s basketball awards. Wisconsin Lutheran College sophomore guard Jake Jarnigo ‘11 has been selected to the 2014 All-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Men’s Basketball Second Team. Jarnigo led the Warriors and ranked 13th in the conference with 14.0 points per game. Phil ‘09 and Kristen (Reiff ‘09) Behl were married December 21, 2013 at St. Paul Ixonia. They are living in Watertown. Phil was discharged from the Air Force in 2013 and is now self-employed, and Kristen graduates from Carroll University with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2015. Brian Mauer ‘03 returned to Afghanistan in March as a cavalry platoon leader out of Fort Carson, CO. The Mauer family, including his wife Savannah and 11 month-old son Bryce, appreciate the prayers of the Lakeside family as he serves his country in this volatile location. Brian graduated Army Ranger School and earned his Ranger tab in January 2014. Stephanie (Leistico ‘86) and Mark Wolters celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on January 14, 2014.
Tim Niedfeldt ‘86 was taken to be with his Savior on Jan 23, 2014.Victim of a motor vehicle accident, he is survived by his wife of 25 years, Karen (Schattschneider ‘85), and children Zachary (Christina), Katherine (Christopher) Loper, and Eric. Allen Thorman ‘86 was called home to heaven December 13, 2013, at his home following his courageous 7-month battle with esophageal cancer. He is survived by wife Susan, children, Josephine (17), Logan (11), Shannon (8) and Kellyn (7), all of Lake Mills. Karen (Melcher ‘72) and Larry Hafenstein celebrated their 40th wedding
anniversary on Dec. 8, 2013. They live in Lake Mills and are the parents of Jason Hafenstein ‘93, Jackie Hafenstein ‘95 & Kaycee ‘01 Welke. Grandchild Regan Leigh Welke, Karen reports, will be LLHS class of 2027! After beating breast cancer on two occasions, Marily Ann (Kutz ‘64) Krueger entered eternal life March 10, 2014, at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida following a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer with Gerald Krueger, her devoted husband of nearly 45 years, at her side. Their 3 children are also alumni: Lisa ‘90, Chad ‘92 and Al ‘95. For family and friends located in Wisconsin, a memorial service will take place at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Waterloo at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 14. The Lakeside Lutheran High School class of 1963 held its 50th class reunion at Carp’s Landing Restaurant, in Lake Mills. 25 of 34 living classmates attended, coming from Wisconsin, New York, Texas and Arkansas. The class donated an external hard drive for Religion class from Lakeside’s wish list, and $63 to the Scholarship fund.
