The Lakeside Lutheran Link, Fall 2013

Scott Gronholz

Director of Development

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. (Galatians 6:9–10) Welcome Lakeside Alumni, to the fourth edition of the Link magazine. We are thrilled to have you in our alumni community. With so many stories, it can be difficult to find time and space for them all, so we hope you enjoy what the Link has to offer, and we invite you to share your ideas for future issues. Lakeside holds a fond spot in many of your hearts, and with your support we are dedicated to cultivating that in our future alumni. As the cover story highlights, it’s a blessing to be connected with a school where the faculty, staff and families are so dedicated to serving their Lord.

Did you attend Lakeside in the 1960s?

Do you have a yearbook to donate to complete our archives? The Lakeside library is missing a few yearbooks from the ‘60s... if you would supply one, our collection would be complete! Thanks for considering this generous donation. To donate or ask questions, please contact LLHS librarian Phyllis Huska at phuska@llhs.org or 920-648-2321 x 2209

And now for an even tougher question: What’s the painting’s backstory? More than 5,000 teenagers have passed through the halls of your Lakeside Lutheran, eaten in the cafe, sat in classrooms. What does this mean? It means virtually every one of them would recognize the oil painting up in the corner of the page—yet how many would pass om side m he e k a the quiz? Read the rich history of L ng s and artist d the painti d all to n o s n in a familiar LLHS icon: tki ate to rem on cre Fort A s e Han n 1963 ord. The oil Boy Jesus in the Temple was given to Lakeside by the Harold Hanson family, members of St. Paul, Fort Atkinson. Artist Adeline Hanson had other watercolor and oil painting and sketches to her name, including her first large oil, Jesus and the Children, donated to the kindergarten classroom in the “new” St. Paul school in the ‘50s. Mrs. Hanson was a Renaissance woman, being the first in her family to obtain a college degree; she was ballerina, violinist, pianist, painter and writer, served as kindergarten teacher at St. Paul for years, and continued painting and writing in later life. According to daughter Rhoda Gross, as she grew up in the ‘50–’60s, it was very clear her mom and dad valued Christian education. Her brother attended Northwestern in Watertown, and the Hansons eagerly anticipated an area Lutheran High School for their daughters. Her older sister missed the opportunity, but Rhoda began as a freshman at Lakeside in Fort in 1961 and graduated in Lake Mills.

The Boy Jesus at the Temple Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. (Luke 2:41–52 NIV 2011) From

Donated while Rhoda was a student, the work was first hung in the cafeteria because of its size and high visibility. Rhoda and her classmates saw it daily; she often pointed out that she posed for an aspect that her mom needed a model for: it’s Rhoda’s forearm that was the guide for the temple rabbi resting his chin in hand. As a cafe is not the best location for an oil, the artwork was cleaned and then found on various walls over the years, including classrooms and an administrative area. Most recently it’s been installed in classroom 120, where freshman religion is taught. It’s a perfect fit with Adeline’s (and our) prayer: that Lakeside always be a place to “sit at Christ’s feet and learn his Word.” See Facebook posts about alumni recollections of this painting at http://goo.gl/Tp6YoD page 6 | Lakeside Lutheran Link | Issue 4, Fall 2013 | llhs.org

What: Alumni “Roundup” When: Friday, September 27, 2013 Where: Lakeside Lutheran football sideline Why: Once a Warrior, always a Warrior!

A tasty picnic supper on the pre-game sidelines, fan-fun Warrior souvenirs for adults and kids— think mini footballs, poms and lanyards— beautiful weather, and best of all, a chance to catch up with fellow alums: that was Alumni Homecoming 2013. Some were familiar faces on campus—alums who have stayed in the area, some even sending the next generation on to be Warriors themselves. Others regularly come back from a distance to see family and friends—a Friday night under the lights is always a great night out. Yet others were back for the first time in 10, 15, even 25 years! Whether from near or far, familiar or longlost, the Development/Alumni office is privileged to be able to provide a mini-reunion night for alumni each year. Over 30 of the 50+ graduating years were represented, with over 180 alumni and families “rounded-up” this year. Some stuck around the tent chatting while the Warrior win against Luther Prep was underway, while others joined fans in the stands. Dozens then regrouped to line the field at halftime for a crowd and band salute—Warriors forever! ~Mark your calendar to join us October 3, 2014~

Class of 1986 led for the second year running with the most alumni in attendance. There was close competition with several class of ‘63 grads in the area for their reunion in Lake Mills the weekend previous, but ‘86 prevailed, winning another $100 toward their next reunion. Milestone reunions happen in 2015 for graduating classes ending in zeroes and fives (e.g., 1990, 1965). Wouldn’t a little seed money come in handy? Will yours be the class to talk it up and join us at Homecoming 2014? Pictured at right are ‘86ers Jim & Kimara (Knief) Winters, Kristen (Priebe) Grunewald, Jana (Ellis) Feltz, Lea (Christian) Murack and Brian Hafenstein. (Theresa (Brashear) Frey also helped her class win the award but left early to see if grandbaby #2 had been born!) Lakeside Lutheran Link | Issue 4, Fall 2013 | llhs.org | page 7

Jacob Schneider ‘12 was named to the Spring 2012-13 Academic Year Dean’s List at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN. Cancer survivor Sarah Garde ‘97 of Jefferson and Kevin Pontel ‘97 of Whitewater are traveling around the country with a bright pink 1950 Ford 8N tractor (restored by Pontel) to raise awareness for breast cancer. The tractor will later be sold, with proceeds going to the Jefferson County Cancer Coalition. Joshua Burrow ‘99 passed into heavenly glory on September 26, 2013. His Christian funeral was September 30 at St. Paul in Lake Mills, officiated by

Pastors Charles Iles, Martin Stuebs and Paul Burk. Lakeside A Cappella choir sang First Song of Isaiah. Joel Pankow ‘87 recently published a children’s book called “The Stick and the Stone” with WELS illustrator Jonathan Mayer. The story centers on a young boy’s conversation with Moses in the Sinai wilderness and introduces children 8-12 to how the Lord works in and through the sacraments. Joel says, “I pray this will help future generations of Lutheran children grow in their faith.” It sells on amazon.com and has a Facebook page at <fb.com/stickandstonebook> Joel is in Bay City, MI. Tim Luetzow ‘80 and son Billy ‘07 both made the Dean’s List at their respective schools last semester: Tim at WLC and Billy at the UW Law School!

He writes, “Maybe you pre fer students, but maybe a picture [of me] in front of the Par thenon in Ath ens, Greece in a Lakeside T-s hir t would qualify?”You ’re a winner in our Warrio r hearts, Pastor Strutz!

Pastor Roger Lemke ‘62 wrote to share some memories and current activities as he ministers to those on Pine Island in southwest Florida. His church, Fishers of Men Lutheran, is well known in the community, having assisted many island residents after Hurricane Charley in 2004. He has led mission trips to Haiti and Guatemala, and in 2011 he camped in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve at the base of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
