Not only are prairie dogs cute, but they are also fun to watch as they play and run through their maze of holes before eventually tiring out and falling asleep in a large pile. mission Motivated by the love of Jesus, Lakeside Lutheran High School partners with families to educate, encourage, and equip students for life and for eternity. about our federation The Lakeside Federation includes 31 congregations in southcentral Wisconsin extending north to south from Beaver Dam to Janesville and east to west from Oconomowoc to Madison. Even while all of this activity is happening, it’s hard to miss a few of the adult prairie dogs in the community that work together, standing guard on their hind legs and watching for any sort of danger. If the adults see an eagle, badger, coyote or any other threat, they utilize a series of calls to warn everyone about the danger. Christian parents and teachers can be the same as those “sentries” that stand guard over their young. We want our children to enjoy their childhood and teenage years, but we are always on the lookout, watching for any dangers that may hurt them—especially anything that can hurt their faith. The Devil is always on the prowl—through the internet, worldly beliefs, peer pressure and more—trying to lead any believer away from the protection of our Savior. Christian parents and Christian teachers work together, not only to educate our children, but more importantly, to “keep watch” through these challenging years. May God bless our efforts.

LLHS Caption Contest! The job was to write a funny or original caption for this photo. Our K–8 readers found this contest challenging, but we're very happy to announce our winner:

Lillian Brey, Zion, Columbus 3rd grader, who made us laugh with her caption idea (below). Lillian receives a $200 LLHS tuition credit!

I know you bumped it, but is a kiss really necessary? I mean—you're in high school now, man!

The "4N6" team at Lakeside Lutheran is utterly a-maz-ing! At the Wisconsin High School Forensic Association (WHSFA) State Festival at UW-Madison this spring, the Warrior team took 3rd place among 343 schools. It's the 8th year in a row that we've been awarded the Excellence in Speech Award for scoring in the top 5%, and we've taken the top score at state twice in the last four years! Part of what sets the Lakeside program apart is the consistent and complete team that Derek Gulrud, Marshall assembles every spring semester. The Warriors carry the maximum 25 entries to every competition, in almost every category of the 16 available. In which of these might you find your niche? We're anxious to HEAR from you!

Your Federation Advantage focus on TSL, Watertown

partners in Christian education TSL is a mission and ministry arm of Trinity and St. Luke, congregations in Watertown, whose goal is that students and families “grow in faith through God’s Word and shine forth to all with the truth that Jesus Christ is our Savior.” They support Lakeside because both churches strongly believe that growing in God's Word does not end with confirmation and grade school graduation—and are thankful when students and their families take advantage of the opportunity to get a Christian secondary education.

• The top reason we chose LL was that our teens will have the same quality Christian education they experienced at TSL. Secondly, the classes available cover many different interests and career paths, so whether our children decide to be pastors or engineers, they would get a wonderful start on their journey at Lakeside. Last but not least, we have always loved the marching band and wanted our children to have a chance to be a part of that amazing group! —Tom and Lisa Lindert

• ...we also chose Lakeside because we wanted our children to be surrounded by Christian friends. These friendships will not only be lifelong but God willing, will continue in Heaven. That is amazing to think about! We parents have made many new friends as well. Knowing that the friends your teen is with—and their parents—all share the same belief in Jesus makes parenting easier during the high school years. We want all our children to go to the same school—though their gifts and interests greatly differ—so Lakeside's variety of classes will help all of them become who God wants them to be. The education, the Christian friends and role models that surround him, and the spiritual growth that we have seen in our son make Lakeside worth every penny. We will not hesitate to send all our children there. —Dale and Laura Punzel

Your Mission Advantage focus on spreading the Word

Education & service—beyond the classroom!

We love it when LLHS students put their classroom lessons and faith into practice outside school walls. Through an LLHS program called Operation Go, summer mission trips are organized for Warrior teens to go and share the gospel around the country. This summer, six teams are headed to New Jersey, Anchorage,Alaska, Texas (El Paso & Houston), New Orleans and Boise, Idaho.

• I chose Lakeside for my family to continue their Christian education, with Christian friends and teachers that care about each student. LLHS has very good academics and a good athletic program. These four years are very important years in a child's life, and I feel that attending LLHS can help my children strengthen their faith and core values and help prepare them for their futures. I am an alum and I am very thankful that I was given the choice to attend LLHS. —Angie Madrid

Lakeside '17 grad and TSL Watertown alum (see TSL feature, previous page) Katelyn Richter will spend a second summer at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Long Valley, New Jersey, a congregation she grew close to last year as a result of a personal trauma during her visit: “While I was in New Jersey my cousin Justin was rushed to St. Mary’s in Madison with a staph infection in his spine, heart, kidney, and brain,” she said. “His situation was pretty severe, almost fatal, but by God's grace and compassion he has made a full recovery!”

After Katelyn took the phone call last summer, “I told everyone else we were staying with, and right away we prayed about it together,” she says. The pastor prayed with her every day and her host family kept in touch even after she returned home. “It was very comforting to me that people I hardly knew—just met that week—still cared about me and my family,” she says. This bond made during one short week lasted throughout the school year. “Last year’s OpGo team and the host family has a group chat, and we still text back and forth.” Last year’s experience taught her that “even though we live far away from this congregation and have very different lives, we’re all brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s so cool that there’s people that believe the same thing as me and that the body Christ is truly everywhere,” says Katelyn. So when the opportunity came for her to sign up for OpGo again, “I didn’t just ask, I begged Pastor Davisson (LL program advisor) to let me go back!” she says. “I think almost every week before they announced the trips I asked him during class if I could go back.”

He said yes—and this year the New Jersey team will again help out with VBS. Katelyn’s four years at Lakeside not only taught her about faith, but

how to share it too. “Pastor Davisson’s senior religion classes have really helped me,” Katelyn says. “We haven’t just talked about religion; he also educates us about other faiths and how to have an adult discussion about religion with others that don’t believe the same thing we do. We’ve learned so many other things that prepare us for the real world outside our bubble of Lakeside.” Katelyn, who graduated as an Academic Top Ten in the Class of 2017, plans to attend Madison College this fall in the Liberal Arts transfer program and then transfer to UWWhitewater for a business degree.

Pastor Donald Tollefson, from Immanuel, wrote to Pastor D about Katelyn's 2016 OpGo team: “Their willing and cheerful service was a great blessing for the kids in our VBS and also for our congregation. I would characterize their service as outstanding during the entire week they were with us. They were cooperative, consistent and more than helpful. Everything went extremely well. For them and their faithful service we are very grateful! It is evident that Lakeside has worked well to encourage and equip your young people for Godpleasing service!”

does your Lakeside Lutheran have great teachers, we help train great teachers too! This spring, Mrs. Hirschfeld mentored Annalies Brander in our Extended Learning Center (ELC). Annalies, who is double majoring in Early Childhood Education and Special Education at Martin Luther College, is from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Miss Brander is the first special education student teacher sent out by Martin Luther College to work with a licensed special education mentor. Working with students in study hall, she loved finding out “how I can best help them and how they can succeed,” she said. “I also have to learn how to explain things in many different ways. What might make sense to me doesn’t make sense to someone else,” she says. “It’s taught me to be very, very flexible.” Our ELC offers help in many subject areas, particularly math and sciences. It also supports students who struggle in a certain academic area and need a little extra guidance or study skills to help get them back on track. Contact Mrs. Hirschfeld at rhirschf@llhs.org to chat about how Lakeside Lutheran may be able to assist with extended learning for your teen.
