(3 John 1:2) Dear Alumni and friends, What an exciting time of year for Lakeside, as students begin to fill the halls for another school year. I am sure many of you still have high school memories—perhaps of decorating your lockers, seeing your favorite teachers or coaches again, or getting reacquainted with friends.

As ambassadors of Lakeside, we want to keep in touch with you, especially our alumni, to rekindle those old memories as well as offer opportunities to create new ones. We hope you will use the Link as an opportunity to do both.

through Lakeside yearbooks tells us the first May Banquet was in 1961, the spring that the first graduating class were juniors. It didn’t take long for May Banquet to establish itself in the hearts and minds of Lakeside students, and has now also become a tradition to honor seniors. Whether someone who likes to dress up and hold hands, or who would rather just enjoy the view from the sideline, no one can deny that May Banquet provides many with some of the dearest memories of the high school years. 1982 queen Holly (Else) Christian reminisced, “May Banquet was a really fun evening with friends. It is one of those great high school memories that really stays with me.” Go ahead—get out those yearbooks, call a friend and relive your Banquets!

The 2002 court included sashes for the ladies. “A Snowy Evening in the City of Lights” saw a senior court of Ryan Palmer, Julie Johnson, Peter Iles, Beka Wilke, Queen Emily Parker, King Ben Schmitz, Kelsey Strohm, Randy Peck, Julia Anderson and Jeremiah Schmiege.

After more than 4,300 graduates and 55 years, there are more than a few families who can lay claim to have multiple generations roam the halls of Lakeside Lutheran. Arguably few, however, have a connection as deep and wide—perhaps even a bit mythical* to those of us outside the family circle— as that of the Lloyd and Karen Zastrow family (featured on the magazine cover) . While an entire magazine could not likely cover the Lakesideconnected forest of their extended family, this look at one tree is a glimpse at part of an impressive heritage.

“We were involved with Lakeside before we even had children,” says Karen. “Lloyd’s brother was the one who made us certain there was nowhere else we wanted to send our children for high school.” That brother was Armond Zastrow, involved in the 50’s with Lakeside’s precursor, the Jefferson County Lutheran High School Association, bus driver for Lakeside until 1964, and father to a student in the first graduating class. Almost 20 years of age separate these brothers, the only two among five siblings to survive to raise families, but the bond of Christian love—for each other and for Christian education—is ageless.

Freshmen aren’t the center of attention at Banquet, but they make their own splash.

Armond and Elaine’s youngest was in the same 1978 graduating class as Lloyd and Karen’s eldest. In the 40 years from 1958 to 1998—when Lloyd’s youngest graduated—these two families had 12 children in Lakeside classrooms for 30 of those years. Add to that the six grandchildren that have attended Lakeside, and these two generations have seen students in 41 of our 55-year history. Now that’s an amazing legacy—and it’s not over, since there are Zastrows with future Warriors awaiting their turns in our halls. *The mythical part comes in when we peer out from the Zastrow family branches to the extended family. There are not many Lakeside alumni who can deny knowing a Zastrow just from the Armond and Lloyd Zastrow part of the forest, but when we realize that names including Genz, Jaeger, Melcher, Rupnow and Schmidt—all with individually notable Lakeside heritages of their own—are to one extent or another connected to each other...let’s just say words like wow, epic and amazing come to mind.

After the show, Dale Oppermann was in the Lakeside entryway that Saturday night last spring, handing out white roses to each cast member of My Fair Lady, complimenting them on a hard job well done. In addition to the 30 cast members, another 20 students were involved behind-the-scenes; Mr. Marcus Buch directed them.

Oppermann has reason to know just how challenging it is for high school students to execute big-time musical productions, and not just because he is the father of Audrey, who played lead Eliza Doolittle in the show. 35 years ago, Dale was himself in the lead, in the 1977 Lakeside production of Music Man, as con man Harold Hill. Over 100 students participated in that musical with teacher/director Daniel Kirk.

Currently mayor of Jefferson, Oppermann credits Lakeside with his foray into the public eye. “Participating in musical theater was fun and made for some great memories, but it also helped me develop communication and public speaking skills which have been great blessings to me over the years,” he says.

The flair for performance only grew for Dale with college, community and professional theater experiences, and has passed to the second generation. Daughter Andrea followed in his college and community actor footsteps and has now embraced the musical life, working in music publishing and finishing her masters in Church Music while she directs orchestra and choir at St. Paul, Muskego. A freshman at Wisconsin Lutheran College, Audrey hopes to continue in the theater there while she sings in WLC choirs. Son Alex is a masterscandidate mechanical engineer, musician, athlete (and faithful family theater attendee).

Having just clocked its eighth year this summer, the Lakeside Booster-sponsored Warrior Classic has become a well-loved and looked-forward-to annual event that brings together a wide cross-section of age, gender and fitness levels. Alumni, current students, even multiple generations stretch out for a morning that organizer Mike Shiels calls “a family event that promotes fun and fitness.”

Held on the third Saturday of July, the Classic is comprised of a “Country Mile” run for younger runners or those not up to completing longer distances. The 5K run/walk and 10K run start soon after, with the last 10K runner typically finishing in just over an hour.

Medals are presented to the top finishers, door prizes are won by drawing and all those pre-registered receive commemorative t-shirts.

Participants don’t need to win a prize, however, to go home well-rewarded. The Warrior Classic takes place on a groomed cross country course within a 172-acre parcel of land once owned by Hubbleton farmer Dal Holzhueter, now part of the state park system known as the Glacial Heritage Area. Shiels says it’s one of the more challenging high school cross country courses in the state. “The first mile of the course is a gradual uphill run with a few steep hills to challenge the runners. There are some flat spots on the course, but then there is also a small hill before the finish. This is a beautiful scenic course with all grass and dirt trails to run on, and it is very well maintained and groomed for the event,” Shiels says. Jefferson County and the state DNR recognize this land as one of the most significant natural resources in the county; Warrior Classic runners all go home winners after a morning enjoying this local treasure.

Of course, another beneficiary of the event is the Lakeside Booster Club and its efforts toward supporting the strong athletic tradition at our school. The run consistently brings out about 75 participants, including some entire families and more than a few alumni; then there’s the faithful who have come out each of the eight years thus far, namely Paul Bauer, Mike Lenser, Jim Pingel, Hannah Shiels ‘12 and Pastor Tom Wilsman. About $1,200 is raised each year to help purchase equipment and maintain facilities and fields.

Says Shiels, “First and foremost, my kids and family were blessed because LLHS provided a Christ-centered education. I help organize this event because I view Lakeside Athletics as an incredible additional blessing our family received at LLHS. Everything we do, we do it for the glory of God.” Sound like something you’d like to join? Connor Vredeveld ‘11 earned the annual Freshman Honors in Mathematics Award for “outstanding performance during freshman year in math courses at the level of Calculus I or higher” at Wisconsin Lutheran College this past spring.

Nicole Wolf ‘11 was admitted to the UW–Madison School of Education as a special education major.

Quinten Petersen ‘08 won the 2012 Fanfare Award, presented annually to one student in recognition of talent and contributions to the programs of the music department of Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Caleb Schmiege ‘08 was awarded the 2012 Martin Luther College Student Senate Fine Arts Award, presented to a graduating student “who has excelled in the area of music, musical performance, drama, or campus publications throughout his college career.”

Katie Schommer ‘08 was one of only 15 selected this year to enter the Clinical Psychology program at Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology in Milwaukee. She has entered the 5-year Ph.D. program.

Whitney is teaching fourth grade at Cambridge Elementary School, where she recently received “Topnotch Teacher” recognition from channel3000.com (CBS news, Madison). Matthew works at Mercy Hospital in Janesville.

Christa (Doelger ‘04) and Jeremy Poole had Owen Andrew on May 29, 2010, Noah Jeremy on June 21, 2011 and baby Poole #3 is due November 2012! The Pooles live in Janesville.

Mckenna Kimberly Fry, daughter of Jason ‘03 and Kayla Fry, was born July 8, 2012 at 7 lbs. 1 oz. and was baptized on the 11th before leaving the hospital. Jason says “God has been gracious to us as He blessed us with a miracle.” On January 8, 2012, Jason began serving as Staff Minister of Youth and Adult Discipleship at Fount of Life Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs.

Katie Huebner ‘02 writes: “After graduating from WLC in 2006, I worked in Milwaukee 2 years before going overseas. I worked with our WELS church in Tirana, Albania, teaching English as a form of outreach.

After a year, I returned to the U.S., to Wausau, WI. Returning to school after a year of work, I graduated from MLC in May 2012 and I am currently living in Hong Kong as an assistant English teacher at Immanuel Lutheran College, a Christian high school. I still wear my Warrior blue and get excited when I hear positive Lakeside updates. May God continue to bless Lakeside!”

Greta DeAnn Melcher ‘95 went home to heaven on August 23, 2012 as a result of complications posttransplant surgery.

Pastor Jim Buske ‘93, Executive Director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Milwaukee, recently shared that a total of 388 Lakeside students have volunteered as peer mentors at Lighthouse since 2008, with some coming back years later to work on staff. (Ed. Note: sounds like a future feature!)

Matt ‘93 and Heather (Ziebell ‘92) Korth will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on November 2, 2012. Congratulations!

Michelle (Pontel ‘92) and Chris Wachal married on June 26, 2010. Michelle teaches at St. John in Libertyville, IL. They were blessed with a daughter, Makayla Grace, on January 9, 2012. Says Michelle, “She is a joy to have in our lives and we are truly blessed.”

Watertown Daily Times story, 8/16/12 about Jack Rhodes ‘80: “A restored 1919 Dunbar popcorn wagon is part of the past at this year’s 125th Dodge County

Fair. Rhodes, of Beaver Dam, spent a year restoring the historical wagon in

his woodworking shop in Columbus. His wife, Rita, left, also helps sell popcorn that is grown in Dodge County. “ Jerre ‘69 and Gloria Duerr are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in September 2012. Several years ago they built a romantic getaway cottage (asecretcottage.com),

currently featured on travelwisconsin.com as the first of five romantic getaway cabins. They write: “To God alone be the glory!”
