Kinematics with applications to particles and rigid bodies. Kinetics including dynamic equilibrium, angular motion and center of percussion. Concepts of work, energy and power. Introduction to the mechanics of materials including a study of stress, strain and torsion. Practical evaluation of theoretical concepts in the testing laboratory. Lecture 2 hours. A study of the reaction of engineering materials to factors affecting their deformation. Topics covered include shear and moment in beams, beam stresses and deflections, combined stresses, welded, bolted and riveted connections, effects of forces acting upon columns. Lecture 2 hours.
