Hello Zone fans, This year marks the launching of our newest Student Wellness initiative--The Zone! Located in the heart of UC San Diego’s Price Center Plaza, The Zone represents a collaborative nexus for the Student Wellness Services. The Zone is a place for innovative, “snack-sized” Wellness programming designed to encourage discovery, exploration, awareness, and adoption of new and current Wellness offerings that can affect positive and measurable behavioral changes in UCSD community members. Letter from the Director

Many people came together to create this new forum for promoting healthy living on campus. Using data from a campus-wide survey in the summer of 2010, we presented a proposal to University Centers. With the help of Gary Ratcliff, Paul Terzino and the UCEN Advisory Board, we selected a space and a service model that would integrate into the Price Center neighborhood. Our lead designer, Jennifer Phelps, incorporated feedback from our staff and students to come up with a layout that was flexible and spa-like, fully utilizing the limited square footage available. We achieved our goal of creating an environmentally sustainable and non-toxic space with the tireless help of Jennifer Phelps, Sarah Raifsnider, Patti Seyfert, Michelle Perez and her Green Student Intern staff. Our concept of “snacksized” Wellness was created with the help of Page 90 Consulting and the ideas of the Student Wellness Cluster leadership team. The people who contributed to The Zone’s creation are too numerous to thank individually, but I also want to particularly acknowledge the following: Alexia Cervantes, Debbie PinoSaballet, Tiffany Bode, Maria Ramirez, Erica Okamura, Diana Phillipi-Barnard, Jan Stamm, Gordon McLachlan, Dave Koch, Reina Juarez, Gina Fleming, Karen Calfas and Brenda Jaleel. Fall of 2010 was a quarter of experimentation, feedback and quick-pivoting. With our partners from Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health, Recreation and the Sexual Assault Resource Center, we provided over 240 programs in ten weeks. Over the course of the year, through customer surveys, focus groups and staff feedback, we found a formula for providing a space that promotes health and well-being to students. The success of The Zone is due in large part to our Student Intern staff-Maleenee Beuhler, Margaret Chiu, Christine Feng, Claire Miller, Ryan Potter, Sarah Raifsnider, Christopher Tam, Gina Tang and Natalie Wong. Thank you for your incredible work. This report provides highlights of The Zone’s programs, services, impact and partnerships throughout the 2010-2011 academic year. Live well and flourish,

Jerry Phelps, Ph.D. Acting Director, Student Wellness Initiatives The Zone Annual Report 2010 - 2011

Qi Gong

“Tasty Tuesday” Cooking Demonstration

Students learn how to relax and rejuvenate with simple exercises developed to reduce the stress of sitting in front of a computer, pouring over printed materials, and grinding gears daily for extended periods of time. Qi-Gong, pronounced “chee-kung”, is an evidence-based health practice with an emphasis on cultivation of the energy of the mind to improve overall health and well-being.

Once a week, students can come to The Zone for amazing healthy cooking demonstrations and nutrition tips. Each demo features different local, organic, and vegetarian ingredients. Sponsored by Whole Foods, Cups Catering, Housing, Dining & Hospitality, Student Health, and Recreation. Complete with free food!

Zumba

FLEXIBLE FITNESS FOR ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE

ENHANCING INTERNAL FOCUS

LATIN-INSPIRED DANCE WORKOUT

Zumba is a unique fitness program using calorie-burning, body-energizing movements from dance based on Latin and international rhythms. Zumba helps students trim and strengthen the core, and is a refreshing and fun take on exercise--no wonder it’s one of The Zone’s most popular programs.

The Game Zone

WII, CARDS, & CLASSIC BOARD GAMES

The open Game Zone hours are available for students to stop by The Zone and play a game! Students can play cards, Careers, Parcheesi, Taboo, and other board games. This activity encourages taking breaks from the day to relax as well as forging new friendships in a unique setting.

EASY, WHOLESOME RECIPES & FREE SAMPLES

Yoga

Yoga helps increase flexibility and stamina while toning muscles. Experienced instructors teach students correct form and guide them through a great way to balance body, mind, and spirit.

Mindful Lunch

EATING WITH INTENTION & APPRECIATION

Mindfulness is simply the moment-by-moment awareness of life, but it’s not always so simple: people so easily get caught up in their thoughts and self-talk that they are scarcely aware of life as it passes us by. This is especially true of our eating habits; we eat meal after meal, snack after snack, barely aware of what we’re eating and how much we’re consuming. Mindfulness is a return to paying attention to life. When we pay attention to our food--really pay attention--we begin to notice all sorts of wonderful aspects of the food, and we become aware of how much we’re putting into our bodies. At the core of mindful eating is the Basic Mindful Bite--a technique that is your starting point for mindfulness with food.

tai chi

“HEALTHy YOU” SERIES

This ancient martial art balances and strengthens the body's energy flow, providing more clarity and focus to the average students’ hectic day. Sessions are led outdoors, in the grassy square of Price Center Plaza.

On even weeks of the quarter, students can get a free physical fitness assessment at FitStop, held in The Zone. The FitStop assessment measures an individual’s level of fitness compared to others in his or her age group. The four specific categories measured are cardiovascular health, muscular strength and endurance, body weight and composition, and flexibility. The Student Health Services’ Registered Dietitian is also be available for any food-related questions. On odd weeks, students can increase internal awareness and manage stress with the Biofeedback equipment provided by The Zone, which teaches students to become aware of various physiological functions and how they occur in conjunction with changes to thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

ANCIENT MARTIAL ART FOR BALANCE & FLOW

MEDITATION

GUIDED RELAXATION & BODY AWARENESS

Students join teacher Shiva on a guided meditation at The Zone. Meditation has integrated itself into modern life and become an increasingly familiar word in our vocabulary. Physicians, psychologists, and other professionals endorse meditation as a powerful tool for relieving stress, maintaining health, and promoting creativity and vitality. In these sessions students experience a variety of traditional methods to achieve a peaceful state of being, greater mental clarity, and unite with your spiritual essence. The goal of the class is for participants to rejuvenate, energize, balance, relax, deepen internalized awareness and enjoy a new perspective on life itself.

deep tissue massage therapy

DE-TANGLING MUSCULAR TENSION

The Zone offered private consultations and introductory sessions for deep tissue massage therapy with a specialist from Recreation. This deep form of body work helps to release myofascial restrictions in the body. It relieves chronic tension, increases range of motion and improves posture.

THERAPY DOGS

CUDDLY CANINE COMPANIONS

Studies show that petting a dog reduces stress, and the trained canine companions brought in to The Zone each week prove this, consistently putting smiles on students’ faces quarter after quarter.

LAUGHTER YOGA

DEVELOPING THE MUSCLE OF MIRTH

Laughter Yoga began in 1995 with an inspiration from a physician in India, and has since spread to more than 6,000 laughter clubs in over 60 countries. It’s a revolutionary way to reduce stress, boost immune function, stimulate creativity, connect with others, and awaken your inner joy. Laughter Yoga combines laughter exercises with breathing and gentle movement. Supporting Healthy Living

Now a UC San Diego finals week tradition, the Therapy Fluffies Extravaganza event is one thing students can look forward to during finals week. The Zone offered twenty to twenty-five Certified Therapy Dogs on Library Walk each quarter of the 2010-2011 year. This program has been so successful that numerous other colleges have duplicated it.
