Promotion Report Sherry Daniel

January 2012 edition of MB Ag Days saw Jaymarandy, Mitchell Farms and L&S Limousin with bulls on display. JayDean had the table top display set up at her stall. The CLA stand-up banner arrived from Ontario but had a note that it might not retract so we decided not to use it. Kyle Wright set up the MLA display at Boissevain’s Farm Focus Day on March 2nd which is a very well attended day of seminars and trade fair displays. I took the table top display to the Douglas Bull Test Sale on Sat., April 7th. Attendance was down a bit at the Sale possibly due to the Easter long weekend and extremely windy weather. I wasn’t able to get to the Open House on March 26th due to bad weather and Hwy. 1 being closed most of the morning. The Summer Show was held at the Portage Fair on July 7th and we put the MLA vinyl banner up at the show ring. The CLA National Show was held in conjunction with the MB Livestock Expo in Brandon Oct. 31 to Nov. 3rd. Due to this, we were able to set up the MLA table top display and CLA standup Banner at the Taste of Beef event Wednesday evening. Limousin meat was used for all the different dishes. As the feature breed, we were able to move the displays to the main hallway for the duration of Livestock Expo. If there are any beef events happening that you would like to use a Limousin display at, please contact Art Rodgers to make arrangements.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Jay-Dean Smyth I would like to start this year off by thanking all past and present board members for their time and commitment. We have had a couple of members leave the board and Mark Angus has been added to the board. So welcome and thank you. We had a very successful year in Manitoba this past year, congratulations to Campbell Limousin for receiving the Show Female of the Year, and all exhibitors who hauled cattle up and down the road to show. We were well represented at all shows. Anne Brunet-Burgess from the CLA and her team has put together some promotional ads and have been working tirelessly to promote the Limousin breed where ever and whenever, they can. There is a new brochure coming out shortly and if anyone is interested in having a copy they can call the CLA directly or talk to our promotion directors on our MLA board, who happen to be Art Rogers and Leonard Gertz. For anyone who is looking to buy or sell calves being purebred or commercial, the CLA website does have a spot for you to do so. On the left hand side of the page, the very first tab is “Limousin for sale”, click that tab and a page will come up. There is 3 tabs, “submit calves for sale”, “view calves for sale”, and “view breeding stock for sale’. Click on anyone of those tabs to buy, sell and look for all Limousin influenced animals. Calving and bull sale season is upon us look to the great ads inside the News and Views for your bull buying needs and good luck to everyone calving. Until next time…

Communications Report Sherry Daniel

We are planning to put a one page ad in the March issue of the Cattle Country newspaper. The cost of the ad will be covered by breeders. The more breeders who participate the lower the cost per breeder and at present the cost is around $150 each. Each breeder will get their name, contact info and a short line to promote their bull sale or private treaty sale, etc. We will be using CLA advertising material to fill the page. As Cattle Country goes to all cattle producers in the province, it is a very effective means to promote the advantages of Limousin to commercial cattlemen. There is a packer demand for Limo carcasses and a shortage of Limo feeders to meet that demand. Increasing market share is an expensive venture and requires breeder commitment to make it happen. By working together and sharing the cost, all Limo breeders will benefit in the long run.

It’s that time of year again! The bull season is upon us once again. The Canadian Limousin Association reminds you to help us help you before leaving some important details to the last minute; • Did you post your bull sale on the CLA website? It is interactive if you have access to the internet, or call our office with the details. We are also able to link to your posted catalogue. If you do not have a way of posting your catalogue on another website (for us to link to), we will post your PDF version for $50. • Are all your bulls registered? Will you have to order DNA before registration? No time like the present to get it all done. • You may opt to register now but hold the printing of the certificates until you are ready to transfer to the new owners. That is an option that saves both you the member, and us the association, some time and resources! • Do you need material for your sale? Posters, breed brochures, coffee cups are available if needed. But please let us know as early as possible. Not hosting a sale but have cattle for sale? If you have breeding stock for sale privately, the CLA website is now able to accommodate your needs via a new classified page specially dedicated to breeding stock. Listings are $50 without expiration. We can include a link to your website or a PDF version of your ad. Spotlight on Limousin Conferring with all industry segments, Limousin cattle breeders seek to better understand and realign their breeding decisions with client priorities. The Canadian Limousin Association hosted two round table sessions entitled “Spotlight on Limousin” comprising representatives of the meat packers, cattle feeders, cowcalf operators and their own purebred producers in order to discuss traits of value inherent to the Limousin breed and how to apply them to maximize performance and profitability. One session took place in Ontario on December 3rd, the other was held in Calgary on December 10th. Matthew Heleniak of Norwich Packers presented to the session, emphasizing the unique characteristics of Limousin cattle and their high yielding ability that his operation relies upon to service a demanding market in Ontario. Norwich packers operate a vertically integrated operation that feeds, slaughters, packs and markets primarily Limousin hybrid cattle sourced in Alberta.

MB Limousin News & Views Bull Issue 2013

Jeff Trafford of Canada Beef Inc. spoke to the retail marketing element of Canadian branded beef and the importance of leveraging the Canadian Beef brand for all high-quality Canadian beef. He encouraged producers to call upon the organization in a support capacity, as the CBI works to add value to all aspects of Canadian beef value chain, bringing broader net benefit back to check-off contributors. With lively participation from over 80 participants at both the Ontario and the Alberta sessions, the forums developed a renewed plan for the Limousin breed, refocusing on adding muscle and yield naturally by crossbreeding. This information will be applied to raise the profile of superior Limousin genetics within the entire beef value chain and the need to supply cattle that achieve greater yield. A detailed report is also posted on the CLA website (under Research and Development) along with the speakers’ presentations. Visit www.limousin.com to access. Here is some interesting specific information that came out of the sessions: • When we asked each segment (seedstock, commercial, feedlots and packers); which traits are important to them when selecting animals for their operation, the only traits that made everyone’s list were; Feed Efficiency ●Muscling/Yield ● Size/Frame. The remaining of their top 10 most important traits were specific to their respective segment but did not make other segment’s list. • Docility came up at both the Ontario and the Calgary sessions. While most agreed that it is no longer an issue with Limousin cattle, all identified that it is still perceived as a problem. Many purebred breeders are not promoting the availability of the docility EPD and/or not contributing their docility scores. Many cattle buyers do not know that tool exist. • While more muscling is expected from our cattle, it ap¬pears that our work on improving maternal traits has been noticed. Somewhere in between is where the value chain expects us to be. See you in Neepawa! The Canadian Limousin Association Annual General Meeting and Canadian National Junior Limousin Conference will be in Neepawa, Manitoba August 2-4. We look forward to seeing you there. More details to come. Anne Burgess General Manager Canadian Limousin Association

National Show at MLE 2012.Class 400a Bull Calf born on or after Jan 1, 2012, the second place calf B Bar Brass 50Z is owned by B Bar Cattle.

Cattle Chat is a monthly webinar happening the third Wednesday of each month, that brings current information to livestock producers throughout Manitoba. A webinar is an internet web conference where you sit at your personal computer (or iphone/ ipad) and see the presentation and hear the presenter, you are also able to ask questions of the specialists involved by typing them into a menu provided. The webinars are recorded so if you are unable to watch them live you can watch it on your schedule. Contact your local GO Office to get the registration form emailed to you, there are also some GO offices that provide a location if you feel your internet is too slow. Here are some highlights from our January 23rd Cattle Chat. Your Calving Toolbox and Tips Equipment needed in the barn • Maternity pen • Clean puller • Chains and handles (No twines) • Head snares or extra chain (no twines) • Obstetrical gloves •Lube or surgical soap • Calving suit • Esophageal feeder (colostrum) • Calf cart • Disinfectant • Kit – tags, shots, etc. Calving Tips • Check viability of calf first • Keep yourself and the cow clean •Don’t pull in improper position • Always check for twins or tears • Use lots of lubricant especially in fat heifers or dry calves With this cold weather it is important to make sure that lactating cows have enough nutrients to sustain herself and her calf. It is a good practise to keep an eye on your cows to make sure they are maintaining in this cold weather and not going backwards. If you are not sure how your cows are doing, have another set of eyes look at them to check to make sure they are maintaining their body mass. Some of the forage this year that come into the office tested poorly and supplements may have to be given. During the cold weather and calving, it is important that cattle be given nutrition that will carry them through the winter months and calving season. If you are looking for more information contact your local GO Office. MB Limousin News & Views Bull Issue 2013
