It is with great pleasure and anticipation to present the 2015 offering of the Western Exposure Female Sale. I would first like to thank all the supporters from last year and their interest in the cattle. I had great reports of the cattle performing at the highest level and saw many of the offspring in the September pasture sales. In fact, I know of many calves that sold for more than the factory on the first shot. After testing the waters last year and having a successful sale I knew without a doubt that I needed to up the ante and bring a set of bred females that could really improve the quality of any herd. This group truly is that special, and I see many future donor candidates in the offering, including some that have been in embryo production with successful results. Please realize many of the females have been selected from the heart of our herd. They were not under special treatment the past year or in a dry lot on the fat ration. The majority of the cows have weaned a calf this fall or were fall calvers and spun for the spring. The heifers came home off of grass mid-October and the cows stayed out till the first of November. They have not been pampered and will not require special treatment. They are bred to produce, not just picture. I feel anyone could incorporate these western genetics into their herd and feel the financial impact the first year and for years to come. My good friend Nick Weaver is bringing another nice group of bred females that are my kind. We like the same cattle; big middled, nice fronted and good pedigreed with a cowy look that is desperately needed due to the lack of focus for maternal genetics. We both certainly feel this offering will be the start of many successful cow families and donor cows for years to come. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions.

I’m not going to try to act like I have a clue about the Charolais breed because I don’t; however, I do know good stock when I see it. Last year’s Lot 1 was a Purebred Char that found her new home with my hillbilly friends: Nissen, Johnson and Matthews in Terril, IA. She raised an awesome herd bull for them on her first shot and is currently in embryo production (or just finished). I don’t want to ruffle any feathers because they hit a home run with her, but, if you ask me, this one is even better. She is so different from her counterparts in the breed. She is moderate sized, soft sided, possess a ton of shape and carries that down to a well-structured package. She was raised on a rocky desert ranch in Eastern Oregon. It’s not very high and the grass is weak. The last thing a Char would be called is easy doing, but she is truly a special individual to look the way she does. Her sire goes back to a little known bull called Troubador? I hear he has helped the Char breed a tick. How cool is that to have a PB Char with a shot of Troubador for the clubby look we all want!

This Char is a lot like my mother in-law. They are both a little easier to get along with when a shot of Ace is involved. She does have a tick of attitude, but she also has a zipper front end and a soft middle. That’s hard to come by in a PB char package. She might be on her tip toes for a tick but she will settle in to her new home just fine. Bid with confidence. Mark Johnson bought one last year with the same attitude. If you get a chance, ask him how he got along. The heifer settled in after a short time and her Frank James heifer sold in his September sale for $4,500. This spring I was talking to a friend of mine in Nebraska that was getting ready to shave the winter hair off his cows. Really guys? We have raised our cattle to the point that we have to tell them when to shed? We complain about the youth today for their lack of work ethic, social skills, addiction to video games, etc. Look at almost every club calf herd; what is different? They are basically in the same boat as the entitled generation! They can’t calve on their own, they need convinced to like the calf that they will probably starve, round bale feeders are needed 365 days a year and they hopefully breed back every other year. It’s time to get back to the basics and let cows be cows. This one will do just that. She’s the “farm kid” of the entitled generation. She will lay down, spit it out, lick it off and have the afterbirth gone before you even know she had it. Yum!

We are still pretty wild west out here and this poor girl was the victim of our ignorance. She had a set of antlers so the vet and I decided we were going to be humane and surgically take them off. On paper it was a great idea, but in reality we probably should have practiced on a few horned mice first. We had no idea what we were doing and youtube didn’t have any tutorial videos to watch. Unfortunately, she got infected and was draining for months! It set her back in her condition, but don’t let that scare you. She is a great one for the future. Goosey fronted with a great middle to convert and raise the next great one.

Mystery #2 coming at you here. I love how this heifer is built. She’s not some little curled up nosed, freak haired, calf starving vessel. This thing is a COW! In Iowa they measure calving ease by how many stitches it takes the vet to close her side. We never have this problem in Idaho, we have a natural way of finding the hard calvers. It’s called the “calve or die trying program.” We can’t get them all checked and this type of female is just made to spit them out. Lick them off, love them, and would even keep her baby mowed out if there was juice and clippers in the pasture. She will be a great cow you can take that to the bank.

I swear, you can improve your AI conception rate 20 percent by using a bull that wasn’t on display in the yards, or by not using overpriced clubby semen because the bull won’t keep up with demand. This summer my wife and I took our family camping for about 23 hours. My twins tried to roast marshmallows and after multiple failed attempts, their best effort looked exactly like this HooDoo cow in her picture. I absolutely love this cow. If you want to see power, power and a tick more power lookie here. She is probably the most powerful cow in the offering in a Simmental package yet, she still maintains a maternal look and feminine front. I torched this one in the Strong Hold chute and the Strong Hold just barely had a hold. She looked like me trying to get into my high school jeans. After a lot of wiggling, straining and effort she made it to the head catch. Her Pilgrim baby could be a home run right out of the gate and will paper as a PB Simmental. Take a deep seat with this one, she’s one to own.

You are looking at a former Arizona National Grand Champion Heifer for my good friends Brad and Dawn Gohr. These next two lots originated in Washington at White Rooster Cattle. 913’s full sister is currently in ET production at home and doing a great job. I purchased the two sisters immediately after seeing their donor mother. She is a good sized, sappy middled OCC Just Right beast. Plus, she got out one night and was hit by a semi on the freeway and lived to tell about it. Now if that isn’t a great donor cow, I don’t know what is. How many of your donors have lived through eating the Kenworth emblem at 75MPH? These Whiskey daughters are pretty hard to move right now so, someone think about my 4 hungry kids at home in Idaho and throw a few bids this girl’s way.

I have chased this gal around home for a while. I don’t want to sound cocky, but I really don’t know how you change her. She is flat good and stunning to the eyes. There is stout and then there’s this one. I don’t know if they can get any thicker. Plus, she is rocket fronted with great hair and absolutely no concerns when it comes to structure like most stout ones. She has raised some awesome heifers I have kept back and few bulls we have sold as well. This is a good one here.

I love it when I read in a catalog about a cow that has averaged 7K on her last four head but, the cow only brings 3K. Either we are the worst investors/cattle buyers in the world or one of us is stretching the truth. Well, that will not be the case with this redhead. She has never been AI’d and I have no clue what she can do. In all honesty, her last three calves have sold for an average of $1.65 @ 625 with a 3% shrink. She did raise a great heifer this year that will be in next year’s sale as long as the bank keeps turning a blind eye. She has all the right parts to raise a great one. Plus a little color always helps with catering to the 8-11 year old steer/heifer buying bracket.

Here’s a true testament to the productivity and future genetic progression of the club calf industry. This Dr. Who female is a knockout to look at and an absolute freak in terms of her neck extension and overall power. That’s the good news, the bad news is that she won’t settle. She never has had a natural calf, but I had to see what she would do. I flushed her to Monopoly, put in 4 of the 8 eggs, and the result was two pregnancies. The heifer calf sold for $3,500 in my online sale, and the bull brought $7,250. He sold to Randy Schurring of South Dakota. He was TH clean and had more hair and power then most double dirty calves! Now please realize those are prices for cattle standing in Idaho. Study your maps, and take note that it is a long way from Idaho to Iowa. When you apply the 4X Iowa multiplier to her she’s already a 40K cow on 2 ET calves. I also have two full sib ET pilgrim calves out of here right now that I will use to make replacements in Idaho. I have about 20 eggs in the tank and it’s time for someone else to give her a try. I thought of just holding her out of the sale but there was room on the truck so see her in Dunlap. She will be a tick greener since she was on pasture till Dec 1st. I recently flushed her in November and she produced 5 out of 8.
